『あなたは健全な教えにかなうことを語りなさい』（テトス２章１節）
「アルゴニズム」という言葉を私たちはよく聞くようになりました。このアルゴニズムは私たちが常日頃、関心をもっているニュースや商品をインターネットで検索していると、コンピューターがそれを記憶し、そのことに関する情報ばかりが私たちに流れてくるという仕組みです。このことにより私たちは自分が聞きたい情報ばかりを目にすることになり、そのことゆえに私たちの思考は偏っていきます。
私たちはバランスよく聖書の言葉に聞いているでしょうか。自分に都合のいい言葉ばかりを追いかけていないでしょうか。きっと都合のいい言葉は自分の今の生き方を肯定してくれるような言葉でしょうから、耳に優しいことでしょう。しかし、果たしてそのことが私たちを健全な人間へと作りかえてくれるでしょうか。
私たちがバランスを欠いた食物を食べ続けると、私たちの肉体の健康は必ず損なわれます。この法則に従うのなら、聞きたい話だけに耳を傾けているのなら、私たちの魂の健康は失われてしまうことでしょう。皆さんは自分の言動に釘を刺すような厳しい言葉も聖書から聞いているでしょうか。私たちを諸々の罪から守り、誤った方向に進む私たちの人生の道のりの方向を変えてくれる言葉はしばしば、このような言葉によるのだということを知りましょう。バランスの取れた言葉を聞いているのなら、自ずと私たちは健全な人間へと変えられていくのです（大倉）。

テトス：それは健全か？

２０２４年７月１４日にアダムから始まった「人から学び、神と共に生きる」メッセージ・シリーズの最後の日曜日となりました。このために２年を要し、私たちが見てきた人間は８０人以上になりました。
これらの人たちは皆、既にこの地にはいませんが、私たちはまだこの地におります。彼らの時代に飛行機はなく、皿洗い機やウォールマートはありませんでした。しかし、彼らは私たちと同じようなことを考え、笑い、泣き、悲しみ、喜びながら、その人生を生きました。彼らは誰かに愛され、何かを達成する喜びを経験し、ささやかな喜びや楽しみを経験しました。彼らは人間関係に悩み、健康が損なわれることを悲しみ、老いることを嘆き、死ぬことを恐れました。
そんな彼らが人生で経験した祝福や失敗を知ることができ、それを私たちの人生に適応できるということには言い尽くせないほどの価値があります。彼らの人生を通して、私たちは避けるべき言動を知り、そのことにより混乱と失望から免れることができます。彼らの人生を通して、何が神に喜ばれるかを知ることにより、神様の祝福に預かり、その保護の元に生きることができるのです。そのような意味で聖書は私たちの人生のガイドラインであるということは確実なことだと思います。
二週間前、私たちはエペソで苦労している若いテモテに送った励ましと訓戒が書かれたパウロの手紙を見てきました。今日、皆さんと見ていきます手紙は同じくパウロが書いた愛弟子テトスに宛てて書かれた手紙です。テトスはパウロが伝道して改宗したギリシヤ人であり、その後、クレテというエーゲ海に浮かぶ島で日夜、伝道と牧会に向き合いました。
エーゲ海に浮かぶ島と聞くと、私たちはリゾート地のような光景を思い浮かべますが、彼が宣教地として遣わされた環境は非常に厳しいものでした。そんなテトスに向けて、パウロはこんな手紙を送りました。
テトス１章１２節、１３節『12クレテ人のうちのある預言者が「クレテ人は、いつもうそつき、たちの悪いけもの、なまけ者の食いしんぼう」と言っているが、13この非難はあたっている。だから、彼らをきびしく責めて、その信仰を健全なものにしなさい』
ここから分かることはテトスが向き合っていた人たちは一筋縄ではいかない人たちだったということです。彼らはいつも嘘をつき、たちの悪いけものであり、なまけ者の食いしん坊と呼ばれる人たちだったのです。「たちの悪いけもの」というような呼び方は道徳倫理など通用しない、人間に向けられる最悪の呼び名と言うことができます。
その時、テトスはまだ年若く、伝道者としての経験も浅かったと思われますが、彼はこのような人たちが住む島で日夜、押し寄せてくる問題に向き合っていました。エペソに遣わされた年若いテモテもアルテミスの女神が祀られている非常に困難な宣教地で奮闘していたことを二週間前にお話ししました。
そのことを聞いたパウロがテモテに手紙を送ったように、パウロもテトスに手紙を送りました。このテトスの手紙は三章しかない短いもので、すぐに読み終えることができます。そして、注意深く、その手紙を読み進めていきますと、その中に「健全」という言葉が五度も出てくることに気がつきます。
さらにこの「健全」という言葉は、同じくパウロがテモテに宛てた第一と第二テモテの中にも五度出てきます。ここから分かることがあります。それは、パウロは困難を伴う場所で伝道と牧会をしているテトスとテモテに対して、彼らが集中すべきことは「健全である」ことなのだと書いているのです。
それでは健全とは何でしょうか。辞書を調べてみましたら、こう書かれていました。「物事が正常に機能して、しっかりした状態にあること」「考え方や行動が偏らず調和がとれていること」「心身が正常に働き、健康であること」これらのことを踏まえつつ、今日は二つのことをお話します。
まず、最初に「健全な教え」ということです。今、健全とは 物事が正常に機能している状態であり、考え方や行動が偏らず、調和がとれていることだとお話しました。このことは健全であるということは秩序があり、バランスを保持していることを意味します。パウロはこの健全という言葉を用いて、このように告げました。
テトス２章１節『あなたは健全な教えにかなうことを語りなさい』
すなわちパウロはここで秩序ある、バランスのとれた言葉をクレテ島の人々に語りなさいとテトスに言ったのです。はたしてこの世界に「秩序」と「バランス」がとれているものがあるのでしょうか。私たち人間が関わっている「政治」とか「組織」というものに目を向ける時、そこに完全な秩序やバランスを見出すことはできません。
しかし、私たちを取り囲む自然界を見る時に、そこに完全な秩序とバランスを見ます。その秩序とバランスは神によって創造され、保持されています。そして、私たちは日々、その秩序とバランスの中に生かされているのです。
先に申し上げたようにクレテ島の人たちのプロファイルを聞く時に、私たちは無秩序で、無法とも思えるバランスを欠いた社会を思い浮かべます。私たちはこのような人たちに何ができるのかと尻込みしてしまいます。そのことをよく知るパウロがテトスに伝えたことはとてもシンプルなことだったのです。「健全な教えを伝えよ」「バランスのとれたことを話しなさい」そのことにより、無秩序でいい加減な者たちの信仰を健全なものにせよというのです。
私は「塩辛」が大好きですが、これから一ヶ月、塩辛とご飯だけを食べ続けたら、ひと月後、皆さんは病院のベッドに横たわっている私を見ることでしょう。あるいはもしかしたら、私の血圧は上昇し、私は既にこの世を去っているかもしれません。「塩辛」だけを食べることは、私の肉体に必要な栄養のバランスを欠いているからです。
聖書の言葉において「ヨハネ３章１６節」の言葉は大切であり、多くの牧師がこの言葉を引用します。しかし、だからといって毎週ヨハネ３章１６節だけを話すことは、霊的な食事においてバランスに欠けていると言わざるをえないでしょう。
神様が私達に与えている「戒めを守る」ことは大切ですが、そのことばかりを語り続けるのなら 神様の恵みを見失い、律法主義が教会の中に蔓延することでしょう。「無条件で愛されている」というのは聖書が語るメッセージですが、そのことばかりが語られますと、「その愛に応えて生きる」という肝心なことが失われてしまうでしょう。
「ダニエル」や「カレブ」の素晴らしい信仰を語ると同時に「エリヤ」や「サウロ」の不信仰や失敗も語らなければなりません。「新約聖書」からしか語らない、「旧約聖書」からしか語らないのなら、それは私達の信仰のバランスを失わせることでしょう。
１３年前、私は６６回の日曜日を使って、聖書６６巻を一書ずつ毎週、お話ししたことがありました。そのことをしましたのも、このことがその理由にあります。それは聖書の一つ一つの教えや出来事が互いに関連しあっていることを知り、広い視野の中でバランスのとれた視点で物事を見ることができるためです。
「繁栄の神学」ということを聞きますが、それはキリスト教信仰を持つことにより、あなたの生活は豊かになると言います。生活が豊かになるというのですから、それは現代人が聞きたいメッセージです。神様は神と共に生きる者に祝福を与えてくださるということは確かに聖書のメッセージです。しかし、このことばかりを話していますと、それは確実に福音が本来、意味していることから離れて、とんでもないところに至ります。語る者は健全な教えを語らなければならず、聞く者は健全な教えを聞かなければなりません。二週間前にパウロがテモテに語った言葉を取り上げましたが、私たちは今日、この言葉を再度、心に刻みましょう。
テモテ第二の手紙４章１節−５節
神のみまえと、生きている者と死んだ者とをさばくべきキリスト・イエスのみまえで、キリストの出現とその御国とを思い、おごそかに命じる。御言を宣べ伝えなさい。時が良くても悪くても、それを励み、あくまでも寛容な心でよく教えて、責め、戒め、勧めなさい。人々が健全な教に耐えられなくなり、耳ざわりのよい話をしてもらおうとして、自分勝手な好みにまかせて教師たちを寄せ集め、そして、真理からは耳をそむけて、作り話の方にそれていく時が来るであろう。しかし、あなたは、何事にも慎み、苦難を忍び、伝道者のわざをなし、自分の務を全うしなさい。

二つ目のこと、それでは、その「健全な人間」とはどんな人間のことなのでしょうか。テトス書の特徴の一つはパウロが教会の中にいる長老、老人、年老いた女たち、若い男、奴隷達に向けて彼らがどうあるべきかを語っているということです。
『老人たちには自らを制し、謹厳で、慎み深く、また信仰を愛と忍耐とにおいて健全であるように勧め・・・』（テトス２章２節）と書かれています。
この言葉から分かることは、パウロは老人たちに向かって彼らが健全な老人であることを勧めているということです。聖書を読んでいますと、人間というものが分かってきます。なぜなら聖書は人間というものを色々な角度から掘り下げている書だからです。人の素晴らしさと同時に人の醜さというものをこれでもかと聖書は私達に示します。そこには人の強さもあり、人の弱さもあります。驚くべき信仰があり、驚くべき不信仰もあり、他者に対する無償の愛もあれば、他者を残虐までに搾取する人間の姿もあります。これらを総合的にとらえる時に私達は聖書的人間観というものを持ちます。
イエス様が選ばれた１２弟子は荒削りな男たちの集まりでした。とんがっている者もいれば、疑い深く自分に自信が持てないような者もそこには含まれていました。そんな男たちを形作るためにイエス様は三年あまりの年月を彼らと共に過ごしました。しかし、イエス様が捕えられた時、この男たちは皆、イエスを捨てて逃げました。おそらくその１２弟子で一番、先見性があり、賢かったと思われるユダにいたってはイエスを売り、自ら自害しました。ユダには知性はありましたが、心がそれに追いつかなかったのです。
私達は子供達に向かって「勉強しなさい」とあたかも勉強さえしていれば万事がうまくいくかのように話しかけます。知恵とか知識というのは私たちを構成する一部にすぎず、知識や知性が悩みや悲しみの種、災いのもとになることが多々あるのです。まさしくあのソロモンが言っている通りです。
伝道の書１章１８節『それは知恵が多ければ悩みが多く、知識を増す者は憂いを増すからである』
サムソンという怪力男が聖書には出てきます。彼の前に腕力で勝ち得る者はいませんでした。男が何十人も束になって、彼に襲いかかっても、彼はたやすくその男たちを打ち負かすことができました。しかし、彼の腕力に心がついていきませんでした。彼には自らを抑える自制心がなく、また女性に弱く、そのことで何度も失敗をしました。自らの心を治めることができないということは、自らの強大な腕力をも治めることができないということで、そのことで彼がしてしまった害悪も大きなものとなりました。彼が欠けていたものはバランスでした。ソロモンはかつてこう書き記しました。
伝道の書７章１６節ー１７節
16あなたは義に過ぎてはならない。また賢きに過ぎてはならない。あなたはどうして自分を滅ぼしてよかろうか。17悪に過ぎてはならない。また愚かであってはならない。あなたはどうして、自分の時のこないのに、死んでよかろうか。
正しいこと、賢いこと、これは私達が求めることであり、これらは私達の心にあるものです。しかし、ソロモンは洞察に満ちた言葉を言います。これらも度が過ぎると、災いとなるのだ。それらによってあなたは滅びてしまうぞ。かといって悪に偏っても、愚かであっても、それはよくない、そのことゆえにあなたは命を失うぞ。「正論」を振りかざすばかりでは、物事は解決しません。放たれた矢は自分に返ってくるのです。詩篇６９篇９節にはこう書かれています。
『あなたの家を思う熱心がわたしを食いつくし、あなたをそしる者のそしりがわたしに及んだからです』
ある時、イエス様はエルサレムの宮にやってきました。その時の様子がこう書かれています。
ヨハネ２章１３節から１７節
13 さて、ユダヤ人の過越の祭が近づいたので、イエスはエルサレムに上られた。14 そして牛、羊、はとを売る者や両替する者などが宮の庭にすわり込んでいるのをごらんになって、15 なわでむちを造り、羊も牛もみな宮から追いだし、両替人の金を散らし、その台をひっくりかえし、16 はとを売る人々には「これらのものを持って、ここから出て行け。わたしの父の家を商売の家とするな」と言われた。17 弟子たちは、「あなたの家を思う熱心が、わたしを食いつくすであろう」と書いてあることを思い出した。
弟子たちはこの時、先にあげた詩篇６９篇の言葉を思い起こしたのです。熱心さがなければ事は動きません。私たちにとって情熱はとても大切です。しかし、時に私たちの熱心さはバランスを失うと、暴走してしまうのです。今日、このような短絡的な感情によって爆発した暴動が世界のあちこちで、街々を破壊していますでしょう。
植物は基本的に光、水、栄養、二酸化炭素があれば成長します。しかし、このうちの一つが欠けると成長は止まり、やがてその植物は枯れてしまいます。光も当たればいいというものではなく、太陽の日差しも強すぎれば植物を枯らします。水もあげればいいというものではなく、あげすぎれば植物の根は腐ってしまうでしょう。この世界が保持されるために、神はそこに健全なバランスという仕組みをインプットしたのです。そして、このことはそのまま私たち自身にも当てはまり、教会にも当てはまるのです。
私は二週間前に心身ともにストレスを感じている若きテモテに「あなたの胃のためにこれからはぶどう酒を飲みなさい」とパウロが言ったとお話ししました。これはパウロが人は魂だけで生きているのではないということをよく理解していることなのだと私はお話ししました。して、その根拠となることを、パウロはテサロニケ第一の手紙５章２３節、２４節においてこう書き残しています。
どうか、平和の神ご自身が、あなたがたを全くきよめて下さるように。また、あなたがたの霊と心とからだとを完全に守って、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの来臨のときに、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。24あなたがたを召されたかたは真実であられるから、このことをして下さるであろう。
パウロのこの言葉は言い方を変えれば、こう言うこともできるでしょう。あなたの霊だけを守るのではいけない。あなたの心だけに関心を寄せるだけではいけない。あなたの体ばかりを手入れしているのではいけない。霊と心とからだが完全に守られるように、これらをバランスよく注視しなさい。それが健全ということなのだ。イエス・キリストは言いました。
マタイ４章４節『人はパンだけで生きるものではなく、神の口から出る一つ一つの言で生きるものである』
ここで言われている「パン」は私たちの口に入る食物はもちろんのこと、広げて考えれば、私たちの周りにある、あらゆる物質をも含むことができるでしょう。イエス様がここで言っているのは、それも必要、でも、それだけで人間が生きるように神は人を作っていないということなのです。この世界に健全という機能を組み入れた神は、予め人間をパンと共に、神の口からでる言葉によって生きるように作っているのだ。だから、あなたは健全に生きるために、霊と心と体のバランスをよく考えなさい。
時に私たちはなぜ、このようなことが私の人生に起こるのだろうかと思うことがあります。何をやってもうまくいかないと思われる時も人生にはあります。その時にまず、私たちが省みることは、今の私は健全な生き方をしているかということではないでしょうか。そう、自らに問いかけるのです。私は今、バランスが取れているだろうか？
日夜、チャレンジが押し寄せてくる環境に身を置いたテモテとテトスにパウロが勧めたことは「とにかくがむしゃらに頑張れ」ということではなかったことに注目しましょう。パウロは繰り返し彼らに「健全でありなさい」と言い続けたことに心に留めましょう。
主にある皆さん、真理は複雑なものではなく、いつもシンプルなのです。ある料理家が言った言葉を私は時々、思い起こします。「あなたが毎日、何を食べているのかを教えてくれるのなら、私はあなたがどんな人間であるかについて答えましょう」私たちの食物は私たちの肉体に影響を与えます。そして、それは私たちの心にも影響を与えます。
私たちが健全なバランスの取れた聖書の言葉を日々、心に取り入れるということが私たちの害となるはずはありません。私達の内に入ってくるものを見直しましょう。しっかりと健全に御言葉が語られ、健全にそれが聞かれるのなら、私たちも教会も、その健康と成長を阻むものはないでしょう。
私は朝ごとに成長している野菜を見る度に、そこに神の法則を見ます。自然界はいつもバランスのとれたものがどのように成長していくのかを私たちに見せてくれます。事はシンプルです。この神の法則の中に私たちも身を置けばいいのです。
お祈りしましょう。
Titus: Is That Sound?

Today marks the final Sunday of the “Learning From Others, How to Live with God” message series that began on July 14, 2024, with Adam. This took two years, and we have looked at more than 80 people.
Although all of these people are no longer here on this earth, we are still here. In their day, there were no airplanes, dishwashers, or Walmart. Yet they lived their lives thinking, laughing, crying, grieving, and rejoicing just as we do. They were loved by someone, experienced the joy of achieving something, and enjoyed small pleasures and joys.They struggled with their relationships, grieved over their declining health, lamented growing old, and feared death.
There is immeasurable value in knowing the blessings and failures they have experienced in their lives, and applying those lessons to our own lives. Through their lives, we learn what words and actions to avoid, and in doing so, we can spare ourselves from confusion and disappointment. By knowing what pleases God through their lives, we can receive God’s blessings and live under His protection. In that sense, I believe that the Bible certainly is the guideline for our lives.
Two weeks ago, we looked at Paul’s letter of encouragement and instruction sent to the young Timothy, who was facing difficulties in Ephesus. The letter we will be looking at today is also written by Paul and addressed to his beloved disciple Titus. Titus was a Greek who came to Christ through Paul’s preaching, and then devoted himself day and night to evangelism and pastoral ministry on the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea.
When we hear of an island in the Aegean Sea, we tend to picture a resort-like setting, but the environment to which he was sent as a missionary was extremely harsh. Paul sent the following letter to Titus. Titus 1:12-13,
12 One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” 13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith
What this tells us is that the people Titus was dealing with were not easy to handle. They were the kind of people who always lied, were evil brutes, and were known as lazy gluttons. It can be said that a term like “evil brutes” is one to which morality and ethics do not apply, and is the worst name one can call a person.
At that time, Titus was still young and likely had little experience as a missionary, yet he was facing the problems that arose day and night on an island inhabited by such people. Two weeks ago, I talked about how the young Timothy, who had been sent to Ephesus, was struggling in a very challenging mission field where the goddess Artemis was worshipped.
Just as Paul had written a letter to Timothy upon hearing that, he also wrote a letter to Titus. This letter from Titus is a short one with only three chapters, so you can quickly finish reading it. And as you carefully read through the letter, you will notice that the word “sound” appears in it five times.
Furthermore, the word “sound” appears five times in the two letters that Paul wrote to Timothy. We can draw some conclusions from this. It is that, to Titus and Timothy, who were engaged in evangelism and pastoral ministry in challenging environments, Paul wrote that what they should focus on is being “sound.”
So, what exactly does “sound” mean? I looked it up in the dictionary, and this is what it said. “The state in which things are functioning properly and are in good working order” “Having a balanced mindset and behavior, free from bias” “Being in good physical and mental health”With all of this in mind, I would like to talk about two things today.
First of all, it is “sound doctrine. Just now, I explained that being “sound” refers to a state in which things are functioning properly, and having a balanced mindset and behavior, free from bias. This means that being sound implies having order and maintaining balance. Paul used the word “sound” and declared the following.
Titus 2:1. You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.
In other words, Paul told Titus here to speak to the people of Crete in a manner that is orderly and balanced. Is there truly anything in this world that embodies “order” and “balance”? When we look at things like “politics” or “organizations” that involve us humans, we cannot find perfect order or balance in them.
However, when we look at the natural world around us, we see perfect order and balance. That order and balance were created and are maintained by God. And, day by day, we are enabled to live within that order and balance.
When we hear about the profile of the people of Crete mentioned earlier, we picture a society that seems chaotic, lawless, and out of balance. We find ourselves hesitating, wondering what we can do for people like this. Paul, who knew this well, conveyed something very simple to Titus. “Teach sound doctrine.” “Speak in a balanced way.” By doing so, he is calling for the faith of those who are disorderly and careless to be made sound.
I really like “shiokara” (salty-spicy fermented seafood), but if I were to eat nothing but shiokara and rice for the next month, a month from now, you will probably see me lying in a hospital bed. Or maybe my blood pressure would rise, and I may already be dead. Eating only “shiokara” would mean that my body isn’t getting the right balance of nutrients it needs.
In the Bible, the verse “John 3:16” is very important, and many pastors quote it. However, it must be said that to preach only John 3:16 every week would mean there is a lack of balance in one’s spiritual diet.
While it is important to “obey the commandments” that God has given us, if we keep talking only about that, we will lose sight of God’s grace, and legalism will spread throughout the church. “Being loved unconditionally” is a message found in the Bible, but if that is all we talk about, we risk losing sight of the essential point of “living in response to that love.”
While we speak of the wonderful faith of “Daniel” and “Caleb,” we must also speak of the unbelief and failures of “Elijah” and “Saul.” If we speak only from the New Testament, or only from the Old Testament, it would cause us to lose the balance of our faith.
Thirteen years ago, I spent 66 Sundays preaching on each of the 66 books of the Bible, one book per week. The reason I did that was precisely because of this. This is because it allows us to understand how each teaching and event in the Bible is interconnected,。enabling us to view things from a balanced perspective within a broader context.
You may have heard of the term “prosperity theology,” which teaches that your life will become more abundant through the Christian faith. Since it promises to enrich our lives, that is exactly the message modern people want to hear. It is certainly a message of the Bible that God blesses those who live with Him. However, if we focus solely on this, we will undoubtedly stray from the true meaning of the Gospel and end up in a completely different place. Those who speak must speak sound doctrine, and those who listen must listen to sound doctrine. Two weeks ago, we looked at the words Paul spoke to Timothy, and today let us take those words to heart once again.
2 Timothy 4:1-5 1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
We have started hearing the term “algorithm” more and more often. This algorithm works by having the computer remember the news and products we are interested in as we search for them online, so that we are then shown only information related to those topics. As a result, we end up seeing only the information we want to hear, and because of that, our thinking becomes biased.
Are we listening to the words of the Bible in a balanced way? Are we perhaps only seeking out the passages that suit us? I am sure words that are convenient for you are the kind that affirm the way you are living right now, so they must be easy on the ears. However, will that really transform us to be a sound person?
If we continue to eat an unbalanced diet, our physical health will inevitably suffer. If we follow this rule, if we listen only to the stories we want to hear, then the health of our souls will surely be lost. Do we hear harsh words from the Bible that serve as a stern reminder to watch our words and actions? Let us recognize that the words that protect us from all kinds of sin and redirect the course of our lives when we stray are often words like these. I believe that if we listen to well-balanced words, we will naturally be transformed to be a sound person.
The second thing. Then, what kind of person is this “sound person”? One of the distinctive features of the Letter to Titus is that Paul addresses the elders, the older men, the older women, the young men, and the slaves within the church, telling them how they should conduct themselves. For example, in regard to older men it is written:
“Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.” (Titus 2:2)
What we can gather from these words is that Paul is urging the older men to live as sound older men. As you read the Bible, you begin to understand human beings. This is because the Bible is a book that explores human beings from various angles. The Bible shows us, in no uncertain terms, both the beauty and the ugliness of human nature. There is both human strength and human weakness there. There is remarkable faith, and there is remarkable unbelief; there is selfless love for others, and there are people who exploit others to the point of cruelty. When we consider these factors as a whole, we arrive at a biblical view of humanity.
The 12 disciples chosen by Jesus were a group of rough-and-tumble men. Some of them were outspoken, while others were suspicious and lacked self-confidence. To shape such men, Jesus spent more than three years with them. However, when Jesus was arrested, all of these men abandoned him and fled. As for Judas, who was probably the most far-sighted and wise of the 12 disciples, he betrayed Jesus and took his own life. Judas was intelligent, but his heart could not keep up.
We tell our children, “Study hard,” as if everything would work out just fine as long as they study. Wisdom and knowledge are merely a part of who we are, and they often become the source of worry, sorrow, and misfortune. That is exactly what Solomon says.
Ecclesiastes 1:18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.
The Bible tells the story of a man named Samson who possessed superhuman strength. No one could defeat him in a contest of strength. Even when dozens of men ganged up on him, he was able to easily defeat them all. However, his heart could not keep up with his physical strength. He lacked the self-control to restrain himself, and he was weak when it came to women, which led to his failure time and time again. The inability to control one’s own heart meant an inability to control one’s own immense physical strength, and as a result, the harm he caused was immense.。What he was lacking was balance. Solomon once wrote the following:
Ecclesiastes 7:16-17. 16 Do not be over righteous, neither be over wise—why destroy yourself? 17 Do not be over wicked, and do not be a fool—why die before your time?
What is right and what is wise, these are the things we seek, and they are what lie within our hearts. However, Solomon offers some insightful words. If taken to extremes, these things can become a curse. They will lead to your downfall. That said, whether you lean toward evil or act foolishly, neither is good, and because of that, you will lose your life. Simply brandishing “sound reasoning” won’t solve anything. What goes around comes around. In Psalm 69:9 it is written:
for zeal for Your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult You fall on me.One day, Jesus came to the Temple in Jerusalem. The account of that event is recorded as follows.
John 2:13-17
13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts He found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 So He made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves He said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning My Father’s house into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”
At that moment, the disciples recalled the words of Psalm 69 mentioned earlier. Without zeal, nothing gets done. Passion is very important to us. However, sometimes when our zeal gets out of balance, it can spiral out of control. Today, riots sparked by such short-sighted emotions are wreaking havoc on cities all over the world, aren’t they?
Plants basically grow as long as they have light, water, nutrients, and carbon dioxide. However, if even one of these is missing, growth stops, and eventually the plant will wither away. It is not just a matter of having light. If the sun’s rays are too strong, it will kill the plant.水It is not as simple as just giving it water. If you give it too much, the plant’s roots will rot.In order to sustain this world, God built a mechanism of sound balance into it. And this applies just as much to us as it does to the church.
Two weeks ago, I told you that Paul told the young Timothy, who was under both physical and mental stress, “From now on, drink a little wine because of your stomach.” I explained that this showed that Paul clearly understood that people do not live by the soul alone. And, Paul recorded the basis for this in 1 Thessalonians 5:23–24:
23 May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.
To put it another way, Paul’s words could be expressed as follows: You must not protect only your spirit. You should not focus solely on your own soul. You should not just focus on taking care of your body. Pay careful attention to these in a balanced way so that your spirit, soul, and body are fully protected. That is what it means to be sound. Jesus Christ said:
Matthew 4:4. “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
The term “bread” used here refers not only to the food we eat, but if we broaden our perspective could also include all matter that surrounds us. What Jesus is saying here is that, while those things are necessary, God did not create human beings to live by them alone. God, who incorporated the function of soundness into this world, created human beings from the beginning to live not by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Therefore, in order to live a sound life, you should give careful thought to the balance between your spirit, soul, and body.
Sometimes we find ourselves wondering why things like this happen in our lives. There are times in life when it seems like nothing you do goes right. At that moment, shouldn’t the first thing we ask ourselves be whether we are currently living a sound life? That is right. Ask yourself: Am I in balance right now?
Let us take note that to Timothy and Titus, who found themselves in an environment where challenges came at them day and night, Paul did not simply advise them to “just work as hard as you can.” Let us keep in mind that Paul repeatedly told them, “to be sound.”
People in the Lord, the truth is not complicated; it is always simple. I sometimes think back on something a certain chef once said. “Tell me what you eat every day, and I will tell you what kind of person you are.” The food we eat affects our bodies. And it affects our hearts as well.
There is no way that taking the sound, balanced words of the Bible to heart every day could be harmful to us. Let us take a fresh look at what comes into our lives. If God’s Word is preached faithfully and soundly, and if it is heard with sound understanding, then nothing will stand in the way of our health and growth, or that of the church.
Every morning, when I see the vegetables growing, I see God’s laws at work there. Nature always shows us how balanced systems grow. It is simple. All we have to do is place ourselves within this divine law.
