イエス・キリストはこの世界に生きる人間の魂を勝ち取るために１２人のロースターを選びました。しかしながら、彼らの原石はゴツゴツしていて、人間の目には使いものにならないように思えました。しかし、最終的に彼らは力強く世界に福音を伝え、イエスの御名のもと、人の魂を勝ち取ったのです。このことは私たちに大切な真理を教えています。
Jesus Christ chose a roster of twelve people to win the souls of people living in this world. However, their raw stones were rough and rugged, appearing to the human eye as if they were useless. Yet ultimately, they powerfully proclaimed the gospel to the world, winning souls in the name of Jesus. This teaches us an important truth.
イエス・キリストはなぜ、あの欠陥だらけに思える弟子たちを選んだのでしょうか。イエス様は彼らの「神の恵みに応える可能性」に目を留めたのではないでしょうか。今も主イエスは神の恵みに応答する者たちを用いて、その働きを進めていくのです（大倉）。

取税人マタイ：神の恵みに応えた男
Matthew the Tax Collector: A Man Who Responded to God’s Grace

ご存知のように今年のサンディエゴ・パドレスは早々にワイルドカードから姿を消しました。そのおかげで私の生活にも静寂が戻り、落ち着きを取り戻しました。このことゆえに主に感謝しています。
来年の春まで私の心から雑念は取り除けられました。しかし、年が明けるとまた気になる話題が出てきます。それは次のシーズンのためのチーム編成の話です。各球団はこぞって自分のチームにとってベストの選手を連れてこようということになります。そして、どのチームもその選手たちと共にワールドシリーズの勝利を夢見ます。
イエス・キリストはこの世界に生きる人間の魂を勝ち取るために１２人のロースターを選びました。その中にはリーダー格のペテロという男がおり、数週間前、本多先生が彼についてお話しくださいました。ペテロは感情の激しい男で、走り出してから物事を考えるような人でした。その情熱の動機と方向性を誤り、度々、問題を引き起こしました。同じく二週間前、私は雷の子、ヨハネについて話しました。イエス様は彼の短気な性格を大地に轟く雷と例えたのです。
この弟子の中には熱心党のシモンという男もいました。熱心党とはローマ帝国からユダヤの自治独立を勝ち取るために手段を選ばずにその目的を遂行しようという過激組織です。当時、熱心党員はいつも懐に短刀を隠し持っていたといいます。I今日的に言うならば、かなり「やばい男」です。
彼らはユダヤを統治していたローマ帝国に対抗し、税金を払うことを拒絶し、その目標を達成するためなら、陰謀や暴力を使いました。この男を選ぶ一方、なんとイエス様は、そのローマ帝国に仕え、税金を集めていた取税人マタイを１２弟子の中に置きました。トマスが最も憎むべき人間は取税人であり、マタイが最も警戒していたのは熱心党員だったにもかかわらず・・・。一緒にしてはいけない人間というのがいるとするのなら、このトマスとマタイはまさしくそのような人達でした。
もしこれらの男達が野球選手であったなら毎試合、相手チームともめ、死球が飛び交い、ベンチの中での小競り合いが繰り返されていたことでしょう。ワールドシリーズは遥か彼方の夢物語となったことでしょう。イエス・キリストは、私たちなら、まず絶対に選ばない男達をあえて選んだのです。今日はその１２弟子の一人、取税人マタイについて見ていきます。マルコは取税人マタイとイエス様の出会いについてこう記録しています。
『また途中でアルパヨの子レビが収税所にすわっているのをごらんになって「わたしに従ってきなさい」と言われた。すると彼はたちあがって、イエスに従った』（マルコ２章１４節）。
聖書の中には取税人が度々、出てきますが、彼らは「罪人と呼ばれる者達」として出てきます。彼らはユダヤ人でありながら、彼らを抑圧するローマ帝国の手下となり、そのローマのために税金を徴収していました。彼らはローマの税金を徴収する請負人ですから、定められている税額を取り立てることが仕事でした。
そのことだけでも彼らが同胞から嫌われる理由となります。しかし、それだけではなく彼らは、その税金に加えて自分の懐に入るお金も同胞から徴収していました。この不正ゆえに彼らは憎まれましたが、その代価として彼らは裕福に暮らしていたようです。このことゆえに彼らはあからさまに「罪人！」と呼ばれ、憎しみや怒りが彼らに向けられていました。
信じ難いことなのですが、そのマタイにイエス様は「私に従ってきなさい」と言われたのです。その時、マタイの心にある「何か」が反応しました。それはいつも彼の心にあった思いであり、しかし、実現することはないだろうと諦めていた思いでした。それは「新しい生き方を始めたい」という思いです。しかし、それまでの彼はその「新しい生き方」に値するものを見出すことができず、また、そのきっかけが見当たらなかったのです。
その彼のもとにもイエス様の噂は届いていたことでしょう。「イエスのことは聞いている。確かに魅力的な男だ」きっとマタイはそう思っていたことでしょう。しかし、自分などに目に留めないだろうし、素通りしていくだろうと彼は思っていたに違いありません。
そのイエス様が「私に従ってきなさい」と言われた。彼はその言葉にすぐに反応し、立ち上がり、イエス様に従ったのです。このマタイがイエス様から声をかけられた直後について聖書はこのように記録しています。
マルコ２章１５節—１７節
15 それから彼の家で、食事の席についておられたときのことである。多くの取税人や罪人たちも、イエスや弟子たちと共にその席に着いていた。こんな人たちが大ぜいいて、イエスに従ってきたのである。16 パリサイ派の律法学者たちは、イエスが罪人や取税人たちと食事を共にしておられるのを見て、弟子たちに言った、「なぜ、彼は取税人や罪人などと食事を共にするのか」。17 イエスはこれを聞いて言われた、「丈夫な人には医者はいらない。いるのは病人である。わたしがきたのは、義人を招くためではなく、罪人を招くためである」。
マタイはすぐにイエス様を自分の家に招き、食事を共にしました。そう、マタイは嬉しかったのです。それはお金では買えない喜びでした。彼は本当に、心から嬉しかったのです！マタイの家には多くの取税人や罪人もやってきて、イエス様や弟子たちと共に席につきました。そこにいた「罪人」と呼ばれた人たちはどんな人たちなのでしょうか。その時の食事会はどんな光景だったのでしょうか。
きっとそこには自他ともに認める、町のならず者達が集まってきていたのでしょう。そして、その食事会の中心にイエス様も１２弟子もいたのです。想像しますに、もしかしたら、イエス様が選んだ弟子達の何人かは、マタイの友人たちの中にいても、何ら違和感がなかったのかもしれません。
しかしそこには、この光景を見て、心が乱される人たちがいました。パリサイ派の律法学者です。今日、私たちが聖書と呼ぶ、律法を日夜、研究し、その律法に従って生きていることを自負していた人たちです。
彼らは目に疑うような、到底、受け入れられない光景を目の当たりにしたのです。彼らにとって取税人や罪人は関わってはならない人たちでした。食事を共にするなんてことは、ありえないことでした。しかし、彼らが見ている光景は取税人マタイの招きを受け、彼の家で罪人と呼ばれている者達と親しげに食事を楽しんでいるイエスの姿でした。
今までに何度も聞いたことがある言葉があります。「もう少し、聖書を勉強して、いい人間になったら教会に行きます」その方々に知ってほしいと思います。マタイの家でイエス様と食事をしていた人達は、「神についてよく学び、いい人になったからイエス様に会いに来た人たち」だったでしょうか？
何かある度に、忠告することを常としていた律法学者は弟子たちを手招きして呼んだのでしょう。弟子たちに言います。
「なぜ、彼は取税人や罪人などと食事を共にするのか」。
これは「お前たちの師匠はいったいここで何をしているのだ」というような思いでしょう。イエス様の耳にもこの会話が聞こえてきたのでしょう。あるいは弟子たちがこのことをイエス様に告げたのかもしれません。この問いかけを受け、イエス様のあの言葉が引き出されたのです。
「丈夫な人には医者はいらない。いるのは病人である。わたしがきたのは、義人を招くためではなく、罪人を招くためである」。
こんなことも何度も聞いたことがあります。「教会には色々な人がいるのですね・・・」
そうなのです、まことにその通り、なぜなら私たちの師匠は病人を、罪人を招くためにやってきたからです。このイエス様の言葉は当時の人間にとっても、聞いたことがないことでした。すなわちこの言葉はこのようなことを言っているのです。
私がベツレヘムで生まれたのは、「自分こそが正しい」と言っている者のためではない。そのような者を私のもとに招くためではない。いや、そもそもそのような者たちは私の元には来ないだろう。確かにイエス様の言動を胡散臭く思っていた者達は、イエスを遠巻きに見、マタイの家に入ることもしなかったのです。その家から聞こえてくる賑わいや光景を見聞きしながら、彼らは遠くからイエス様を非難したのです。
ルカの１５章には放蕩息子の例え話があります。ある所に二人の兄弟がいた。その弟は父が生きているにもかかわらず、早々に父の遺産を求め、それをもって家を出た。行った先々で好き放題に放蕩に明け暮れ、全てを失い、彼の生活は地に落ちた。そのような生活の中、彼は一大決心をします。
「父の家に帰ろう。そこで雇い人の一人として働かせてもらおう」この息子は自分がしてしまった愚かさを認め、父の子として家に戻ることはできないと思ったのです。しかし、父は毎日、息子が帰ってくることを待ち望み、遠くを歩く彼を認め、自ら走って近寄り、彼を抱きしめ接吻します。そして、僕達に彼のために祝宴を開くようにと命じます。
彼の兄は、弟が帰ってきたことを知り、父が彼のために祝宴を催していることを知りますが、家に入ろうとしません。兄の心は怒りで燃えています。「オヤジはいったい何をしているのだ！」その時の兄の心は、ここに記されている律法学者の心と全く同じものです。その時に父は、その心にあることをこう、打ち明けました。
ルカ１５章３２節
『このあなたの弟は、死んでいたのに生き返り、いなくなっていたのに見つかったのだから、喜び祝うのはあたりまえである』
主にある皆さん、私たちはマタイの宴会に、そして、弟のために催された祝宴の中にいるでしょうか。もし、私たちがその祝宴の中におらず、兄のように外で動揺し、怒っているのなら、私たちはかなり残念なクリスチャンライフを送ることになります。
マタイと弟の「笑顔」と、パリサイ人と兄の「しかめ面」はあまりにも対照的だからです。私たちはしかめ面をして生きるために、クリスチャンになったのではありません。父の喜びを自分の喜びとして生きていくことを私たちは望んでいるはず。
父なる神の前に自らを正しいと主張することができる人などいるのでしょうか。パリサイ人も兄も自分こそが父の側に一番近くにいると思っていたことでしょう。しかし実のところ、彼らはその父の心から一番、遠くにいたのです。
取税人マタイが書いた「マタイによる福音書」には興味深いことが隠されています。その書の８章、９章にマタイはイエス様がなされた１０の奇跡を並べました。
１）「らい病人のきよめ」（８章１節－４節）
２）「中風の僕のいやし」（８章５節－１３節）
３）「ペテロの姑の熱病のいやしと悪霊からの解放」（８章１４節－１７節）
４）嵐が静められた奇跡」（８章２３節－２７節）
５）「汚れた霊につかれた人々からの悪霊追放」（８章２８節－３４節）
６）「床の上に寝かされて運ばれた中風の者のいやし」（９章１節－８節）
７）「１２年間、長血をわずらった女のいやし」（９章２０節－２２節）
８）「会堂司の娘の死からのよみがえり」（９章１８節－２６節）
９）「ふたりの盲人のいやし」（９章２７節－３１節）
１０）「悪霊につかれたおしのいやし」（９章３２節－３４節）
ここに記されていることは「肉体の癒し」、「悪霊からの解放」、「嵐を静めたということ」、「死からの復活」ということです。言うまでもなく私達はこれらを奇跡と呼びます。そう、これらはどれもこれも私達には文句なしの奇跡です。
しかし、私達はこれらを「すごい奇跡だ！」と言いますが、全能の神の側から見れば、これらは奇跡ではないということをご存知でしょうか。神にとりまして、これらのことは私達が本のページをめくったり、腕に時計をはめるようなことなのです。しかし、やはりこれらは私達にとりましては奇跡以外のなにものではないので、これらを「１０の奇跡」と呼びましょう。
しかし、実はここにはもう一つ、奇跡が書かれていると言う学者がおります。その奇跡をマタイは意図的に書いたのではないかというのですが、何度読み返してもここには１０の奇跡しかありません。しかし注意深く、このマタイ８章、９章を読みますと一つ気になる記事があるといいます。それは６番目の奇跡である「床の上に寝かされて運ばれた中風の者のいやし」（９章１節－８節）と７番目に書かれている「１２年間、長血をわずらった女のいやし」（９章２０節－２２節）の間にあります。
マタイはこの８章、９章において奇跡を意図的に列挙して並べています。しかし、その間は少し違うのです。その学者はこれらの奇跡の間にはさまれている、そのことも奇跡なのではないかというのです。しかも、これらの奇跡の順番を数えると、それは七番目に書かれている奇跡なのです。「七」という数字は聖書の中では完全数ですから、それはまさしく奇跡中の奇跡だということになります。私達はそんなすごい奇跡を読み過ごしてしまったのでしょうか。それではこれらの奇跡の間に書かれている七番目の奇跡とは何なのでしょうか。その箇所、マタイ９章９節にはこう書かれています。
さてイエスはそこから進んで行かれ、マタイという人が収税所にすわっているのを見て、「わたしに従ってきなさい」と言われた。すると彼は立ちあがって、イエスに従った。
彼はイエス様がなさった１０の奇跡の中に、彼にイエス・キリストが声をかけ、それにマタイが応答したことを入れました。マタイは自分が毎日、何をしているのかを知っていました。同胞を欺き、裏切るようなことは明らかでした。だから彼は「この罪人め！」と呼ばれていました。自分に向けられる憎しみに対して、彼は自暴自棄になり、悪事を繰り返していたことでしょう。しかし、彼の人生はイエス様との出会いによって変わったのです。マタイはそのことを奇跡の中の最大の奇跡としたのです。
先に言いましたように嵐が沈められるとか、病人が癒されるとか死人がよみがえるということは神の側からすれば、それは奇跡ではありません。なぜなら、この自然界と我々の肉体は全て神の御手の中にあるからです。しかし、マタイがイエスに従ったことはマタイの「自由意志」によるものであり、そこに神は介入されないのです。それゆえに私たちが自ら決断して、神のもとに立ち返ることは神の前に奇跡なのです。
ここにきて私達は聖書に記されている、あの記録に合点がいくのです。聖書の中で一人の人が罪を悔い改めて神と共に生きようとする時に、天では何が起きていると記していますか。
ルカ１５章１０節
「よく聞きなさい。それと同じように、罪人がひとりでも悔い改めるなら、神の御使たちの前でよろこびがあるであろう」
イエス様が人の病を癒された時、死人をよみがえらせた時、嵐を静めたような時に天の御使い達の間に喜びの歓声があがったということは一度も記録されていません。そうです、何度も申し上げますが、それらのことは神様にとりましても、その傍にいます御使いにとりましても当たり前のことなのです。ガレージドアを開けたり、お湯を沸かしたり、手紙をポストに入れることを、いちいち喜ぶ人はいませんでしょう。しかし、一人の罪人が悔い改めるのなら、そう、あなたがあの日、あの時、主のもとに立ち返ろうと決断した時、天は揺れるのです。もし今日、神の前に悔い改め、主を心に信じ受け入れる方がおりますのなら、驚くなかれ、天では御使い達が歓声をあげるというのです。それこそが本当の奇跡だからです。
この世界で一番、難しいことは何でしょう？この世界で一番、難しいことは私たちの心が変わることです。今、あなたの心には「言われてみればそうだよな〜」とあの人、この人の顔が浮かんでいるかもしれません。「あの人のあの性格、変わらないかね〜。それさえ変わればいい人なのにね〜」という人が私たちの周りにはいますでしょう。そして、そう願って５０年。しかし、その人は何も変わらずに私の前にいる。それが私たちの世界です。
そして、言うまでもない、実際は「あの人、この人」などと悠長なことを言っている立場に私たちはないのです。私たち自身にも自分では見えない、気がついていない、しかし、私たちが変わるべきことがあるのです。そして、神様はそのことに気づき、そのことを決断する私達の心には触れません。神様はそのことを私たち一人一人に託しておられるのです。
世界で一番、硬い鉱物はダイヤモンドだといわれます。神は豆腐をつぶすかのように、そのダイヤモンドを粉々にすることができるでしょう。しかし、私たちのプライドはこのダイヤモンドよりも硬い。「私のプライドがそれを許さない」という決意は、この世界の何よりも硬いのです。この世界ではこのプライドが互いにぶつかり合っているのですから、問題がなくなることがないのです。
マタイが神に立ち返ったことは確かに奇跡です。しかし皆さん、思いませんか？あのパリサイ人と兄の心にある思いが砕かれて、神に立ち返るということも奇跡だと。預言者イザヤは興味深いことを書き残しました。
イザヤ５１章１節
「義を追い求め、主を尋ね求める者よ、わたしに聞け。あなたがたの切り出された岩と、あなたがたの掘り出された穴とを思いみよ」
私たちの心にあるプライドは固い岩のようなものですそれは頑としていて私たちの心から動きません。そのことゆえに自分の可能性は失われ、人と人との関係がうまくいきません。
神様は色々なことを通して（時にその多くは挫折というものなのですが）、この岩を砕くチャンスを何度も私達に与えてくださっています。どうか私たちの心にある、この固い岩が砕かれ、取り除かれる、その貴重なチャンスを見過ごすことがありませんように。時に主はこの岩を取り除けるために、私達が感じる「虚しさ」とか「限界」を用います。虚しさや自分の限界を感じて、私たちが神を求め、神に立ち帰り、神と共にその人生を歩むことができるのなら、その虚しさや限界は私たちにとって益となります。あなたの切り出された岩と、それゆえにかつて岩があった場所の掘り出された空洞を見てみよ！あそこには私達の心にある頑なな固い岩がかってあったのだ。しかし、今はもうない！
私たちはこの神の恵みに生きる者たちです。私たちがその穴を見る時に私達の心には主への感謝が湧き上がってくるのです。そして、その感謝は私達の今日を生きる力となり、それは私たちが明日を生きる希望となるのです。
聖書の中にはイエス様の弟子の名前があちこちに書かれています。前回、ヨハネは自らを「イエスの愛する弟子」と書いたとお話ししました。マタイも「マタイによる福音書」を書いた時、自らを何と呼ぶべきかと考えたようです。彼はそこに「使徒マタイ」とか「１２弟子の一人のマタイ」とは書きませんでした。彼は自らを何と呼んだのか。彼は「取税人マタイ」と自分の古い肩書きを、自らを呼ぶ時に使ったのです。
彼はいつも自分がどこから救われたのか、その奇跡の穴を心に据えて生きたのです。そして、そのことを思い起こす度に、彼の心はイエス・キリストに対する愛と情熱を取り戻しました。
伝承によりますと彼はエルサレム、エチオピア、ペルシャ、メデアと歩き回り、ついに殉教の死を遂げたと言われています。イエス様が彼の心に与えた情熱は、取税人マタイをして、彼を地の果てまでの宣教者へと変えたのです。
先に言いました。イエス様の１２弟子ではワールドシリーズは勝てない。彼らの原石はゴツゴツしていて、人間の目には使いものにならないように思えました。しかし、ユダを除く彼らは皆、力強く世界に福音を伝え、イエスの御名のもと、人の魂を勝ち取ったのです。このことは私たちに大切な真理を教えています。
イエス・キリストはなぜ、あの欠陥だらけに思える弟子たちを選んだのでしょうか。イエス様は「神の恵みに応える可能性のある人材」を念頭に置いたのではないでしょうか。主イエスは今も神の恵みに応答する者たちを用いて、その働きを進めていくのです。主イエスは今日も私たちに語りかけています。「私と共に生きないか？」主から投げられたボールは皆さんの胸元に届いているはず。この主の恵みに応える人はいるでしょうか。人生最大の奇跡があなたに起こるか否か、それは全てあなたの応答にかかっているのです。お祈りしましょう。
Matthew the Tax Collector: A Man Who Responded to God’s Grace

All distracting thoughts have been removed from my heart until next spring. However, as the new year begins, topics of interest emerge again. It is about the team composition for the next season. Each team will strive to bring in the best players for their own squad. And every team dreams of winning the World Series with those players.
Jesus Christ chose a roster of twelve people to win the souls of people living in this world. Among them was a man named Peter, who served as their leader. A few weeks ago, Pastor Honda spoke about him. Peter was a man of intense emotion, the sort of person who acted first and thought later. His passion was misguided in both its motivation and direction, frequently causing problems.
Two weeks ago, I also spoke about John, the son of thunder. Jesus likened his quick temper to thunder that roars across the earth.
Among these disciples was a man named Simon the Zealot. The Zealots were a radical organization determined to achieve Jewish autonomy and independence from the Roman Empire by any means necessary. It is said that at the time, members of the Zealots always concealed daggers in their robes. To put it in today’s terms, they were very “dangerous men”.
They opposed the Roman Empire which ruled Judea, refused to pay taxes, and resorted to conspiracy and violence to achieve their goals. While choosing this man, Jesus surprisingly placed Matthew, a tax collector who served the Roman Empire and collected taxes, among His twelve disciples. Though Thomas most despised tax collectors, and Matthew most guarded against Zealots . . . If there are people who should never be paired together, then Thomas and Matthew were precisely such individuals.
If these men were baseball players, every game would have ended in a brawl with the opposing team, with hit-by-pitches exchanged, and repeated scuffles in the dugout. The World Series must have become a distant dream. Jesus Christ deliberately chose men whom we would never have chosen in the first place. Today we will look at one of the twelve disciples, Matthew the tax collector. Mark records the encounter between Matthew the tax collector and Jesus as follows.
As He walked along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow Me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed Him (Mark 2:14).
Tax collectors appear frequently in the Bible, but they are portrayed as “those called sinners.” Though they were Jews, they became agents of the Roman Empire that oppressed them, collecting taxes for Rome. They were contractors collecting taxes for Rome, so their job was to collect the prescribed tax amount.
That alone is reason enough for them to be disliked by their fellow countrymen. However, not only that, but they also collected money from their fellow citizens that went into their own pockets in addition to those taxes. Because of this injustice, they were hated, but in return, they seemed to live in prosperity. Because of this, they were openly called “sinners!” and hatred and anger were directed toward them.
It is hard to believe, but Jesus said to such a Matthew, “Follow Me.” At that moment, something within Matthew’s heart stirred. It was a thought that had always been in his heart, yet one he had resigned himself to never being realized. It is the desire to “start a new way of living”. However, until then, he had been unable to find anything worthy of that “new way of living,” nor could he find any opportunity to begin it.
The rumors about Jesus must have reached him as well. “I’ve heard about Jesus. He certainly is a fascinating man.” Matthew must have thought. But he must have thought that someone like himself wouldn’t catch Jesus’ eye and would simply pass by.That Jesus said, “Follow Me.” He immediately responded to those words, stood up, and followed Jesus. The Bible records what happened immediately after this Matthew was called by Jesus.

15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples, for there were many who followed Him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw Him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked His disciples: “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Matthew immediately invited Jesus into his home and shared a meal with Him. Yes, Matthew was happy. It was a joy that money couldn’t buy. He was truly, genuinely happy!
Many tax collectors and sinners came to Matthew’s house and sat down with Jesus and His disciples. What kind of people were those called “sinners” who were there? What was the scene like at that dinner party?
Surely, it was a gathering place for the town’s acknowledged troublemakers. And at the center of that meal were both Jesus and the twelve disciples. I imagine that perhaps some of the disciples chosen by Jesus might have fit right in among Matthew’s friends without any sense of discomfort.
However, there were those whose hearts were unsettled by this sight. The teachers of the law who were Pharisees. These are people who prided themselves on studying the law—what today we call the Bible—day and night and living according to it.
They witnessed a scene so unbelievable it was impossible to accept. To them, tax collectors and sinners were people they should not associate with. Sharing a meal together was unthinkable. But what they saw was Jesus, having accepted the invitation of Matthew the tax collector, enjoying a meal in his house in friendly company with those called sinners.
There is a phrase I have heard many times before: “I will go to church once I study the Bible a bit more and become a good person.” Were the people dining with Jesus at Matthew’s house those who had “studied God well, and became good people so they came to meet Jesus”? The teachers of the law, who were in the habit of giving advice whenever something came up, must have beckoned Jesus’ disciples to come to them.They said to the disciples:
“Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
This was probably like thinking: “What in the world is your master doing here?” Jesus must have heard this conversation too. Or perhaps the disciples told Him about it. In response to this question, those words of Jesus were drawn out.
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
I have heard this many times before. “There are all kinds of people in the church, isn’t there .”
That’s right, absolutely right, because our Master came to call sinners and the sick. These words of Jesus were something people at that time had never heard before. In other words, this is what these words are saying:
I was born in Bethlehem not for those who say, “I am truly right.” I do not invite such people to Myself. No, such people would not come to Me in the first place. Indeed, those who regarded Jesus’ words and actions with suspicion kept their distance from Him and did not even enter Matthew’s house. While hearing the sounds of celebration and seeing the scenes coming from that house, they criticized Jesus from afar.
Luke 15 contains the parable of the prodigal son. There were two brothers. The younger brother, even though his father was still alive, demanded his inheritance early and left home with it. He indulged in debauchery wherever he went, squandered everything, and his life hit rock bottom. Amidst such a life, he made a major decision.
“I will go back to my father’s house. I will work there as one of the hired servants.” This son realized the foolishness he had committed and thought he could not return home as his father’s son. But every day, the father waited longingly for his son to return, and spotting him walking in the distance, he runs to meet him, embraces and kisses him. And he commands his servants to hold a feast in his honor.
His older brother learns that the younger brother has returned and that their father is holding a feast in his honor, but he refuses to enter the house. The older brother’s heart burns with rage. “What in the world is the Old Man doing?!” The older brother’s heart at that time was exactly the same as the heart of the teachers of the law recorded here. At that moment, the father confessed what was in his heart.
Luke 15:32 “But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”
Dear people in the Lord, are we present at Matthew’s banquet, and at the feast prepared for the younger brother? If we are not part of that celebration, but instead are outside, agitated and angry like the older brother, then we are living a rather disappointing Christian life.
It is because the “smiles” of Matthew and the younger brother stand in stark contrast to the “frowns” of the Pharisees and the older brother. We did not become Christians to live with a frown on our faces. We should desire to live our lives with the Father’s joy as our own.
Is there anyone who can claim on their own to be righteous before God the Father? The Pharisees and the older brother both thought they were the ones closest to the Father. But in truth, they were the ones furthest from the Father’s heart.
The Gospel of Matthew, written by Matthew the tax collector, holds some intriguing secrets. In chapters 8 and 9 of that book, Matthew listed ten miracles performed by Jesus.
1) “Cleansing of a Leper” (8:1-4)
2) “Healing of the Centurion’s Servant” (8:5-13)
3) “Healing of Peter’s Mother-in-Law and Casting Out Demons” (8:14-17)
4) “Calming the Storm” (8:23-27)
5) “Casting Out Demons” (8:28-34)
6) “Healing of a Paralytic” (9:1-8)
7) “Healing of a Woman who Suffered with 12 Years of Hemorrhaging” (9:20-22)
8) “Resurrecting a Synagogue Leader’s Daughter” (9:18-26)
9) “Restoring the Sight of Two Blind Men” (9:27-31)
10) “Healing a Mute, Demon-possessed Man” (9:32-34)
What is recorded here are “physical healings,” “deliverance from demons,” “calming of a storm,” and “resurrecting the dead.” Needless to say, we call these miracles. Yes, each and every one of them is an undeniable miracle to us.
But do you know that while we call these things “amazing miracles!”, from the perspective of God Almighty, these are not miracles at all? For God, these things are as simple as turning the pages of a book or putting a watch on one’s wrist. However, these are nothing short of miracles for us, so let’s call these the “Ten Miracles.”
However, there are scholars who claim that another miracle is actually recorded here. They say Matthew intentionally wrote about that miracle, but no matter how many times I reread it, there are only ten miracles here. However, if you read chapters 8 and 9 of Matthew carefully, there is one account that seems out of place. The account is found between the sixth miracle of the “Healing of a Paralytic” (9:1-8), and the seventh miracle of the “Healing of a Woman who Suffered with 12 Years of Hemorrhaging” (9:20-22).
In chapters 8 and 9, Matthew deliberately lists and arranges the miracles. However, the approach is slightly different in between. The scholars suggest that the very fact of being caught between these miracles might itself be a miracle. Moreover, if you count the order of these miracles, it is the seventh miracle recorded.The number seven is the perfect number in the Bible, so this is truly a miracle among miracles. Did we overlook such an incredible miracle? So what is this seventh miracle described among these miracles? The passage, Matthew 9:9, reads as follows:
As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him.
He included among the ten miracles performed by Jesus the instance where Jesus Christ spoke to Matthew and how he responded. Matthew knew what he was doing every day. It was clear he deceived and betrayed his own people. That’s why he was called “You sinner!” Faced with the hatred directed at him, he must have become desperate and resorted to repeated acts of wrongdoing. However, his life was changed by his encounter with Jesus. Matthew considered this to be the greatest miracle of all miracles.
As I mentioned earlier, from God’s perspective, calming storms, healing the sick, or raising the dead, are not miracles. For all of nature and our physical bodies are in God’s hands. However, Matthew’s decision to follow Jesus was made of his own free will, and God does not intervene there. Therefore, our decision to turn to God is a miracle before Him.
Now we understand that account recorded in the Bible. What does the Bible say happens in heaven when a person repents of their sins and seeks to live with God?
Luke 15:10. “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
There is no record of angels in heaven ever raising shouts of joy when Jesus healed people’s illnesses, raised the dead, or calmed storms. Yes, as I have said many times before, these things are natural to God and to the angels who are with Him. No one gets excited every single time they open the garage door, boil water, or drop a letter in the mailbox. However, if one sinner repents—yes, when you turned to the Lord that day, at that time—the heavens tremble. If anyone repents before God today, and believes and accepts the Lord in their heart, let them not be surprised—for in heaven, the angels are said to shout for joy. Because that is a true miracle.
What is the most difficult thing in this world? The hardest thing in this world is for our hearts to change. Right now, the faces of this person and that person might be popping into your mind, making you think, “Now that you mention it, yeah, that’s true.” There must be people around us that we think: “I wonder if that person’s personality will ever change. If only that would change, they’d be such a good person.” And so, I’ve wished for fifty years. Yet that person remains unchanged before me. That is our world.
And needless to say, we’re not in a position to be leisurely saying things like “that person, this person.” There are things within ourselves that we cannot see, that we are unaware of, yet we must change. And God, aware of this, does not touch our hearts when we make that decision. God has entrusted this to each and every one of us.
The hardest mineral in the world is said to be a diamond. God could crush that diamond to smithereens as easily as crushing tofu. But our pride is harder than this diamond. “My pride won’t allow it”—that resolve is harder than anything in this world. In this world, this pride constantly clashes with one another, so problems never cease to exist.
Matthew turning to God was truly a miracle. But don’t you think, everyone? That the hearts of the Pharisees and the older brother to be broken and for them to turn to God, would also be a miracle? The prophet Isaiah wrote something interesting.
Isaiah 51:1 “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn”
The pride in our hearts is like solid rock. It stubbornly refuses to budge from our hearts. Because of that, one’s potential is lost, and relationships with others do not go well.
God gives us many chances to break this rock through various experiences (though many of them involve setbacks). Let us not miss that precious chance for the hard rock within our hearts to be broken and removed. Sometimes the Lord uses the “emptiness” or “limitations” we feel to remove this rock. If we can seek God, turn to Him, and walk through life with Him when we feel emptiness or our own limitations, then that emptiness and those limitations become beneficial for us. Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn! There once was a stubborn, hard rock in our hearts. But now it’s gone!
We are those who live by this divine grace. When we see that hole, gratitude toward the Lord wells up in our hearts. And that gratitude becomes the strength that sustains us today, and it becomes the hope that sustains us tomorrow.
The names of Jesus’ disciples appear throughout the Bible. Last time, I talked of how John referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” When Matthew wrote the “Gospel of Matthew,” he seems to have pondered what to call himself. He did not write “Apostle Matthew” or “Matthew, one of the Twelve Disciples.” What did he call himself? He used his old title, “Matthew the tax collector,” when referring to himself. He always lived with that miraculous hole in his heart, the place from which he had been saved. And every time he recalled that, his heart was filled anew with love and passion for Jesus Christ.
According to tradition, he is said to have traveled through Jerusalem, Ethiopia, Persia, and Media, finally meeting a martyr’s death. The passion Jesus placed in his heart transformed Matthew the tax collector into a missionary to the ends of the earth.
I said it before: Jesus’ 12 disciples could not win the World Series. Their raw stones were rough and rugged, appearing to the human eye as if they were useless. But all of them, except Judas, went forth with great power and proclaimed the gospel to the world, winning souls in the name of Jesus. This teaches us an important truth.
Why did Jesus Christ choose those disciples who seemed so flawed? Jesus probably had in mind “people who were capable of responding to God’s grace.” The Lord Jesus continues to advance His work through those who respond to God’s grace.
The Lord Jesus speaks to us even today. “Won’t you live with Me?” The ball thrown by the Lord should have reached your hearts. Is there anyone who will respond to this Lord’s grace? Whether the greatest miracle of your life happens to you or not depends entirely on your response. Let us pray.
