「住み慣れた場所を離れること」は神が人に語りかける一つの型になっています。人は一つところに住みつくことにより、そこに自分の城を築きます。つまり、家族、土地、習慣、文化等の中に自分のアイデンティティを求めます。そこを離れることは安定と保護を失うことを意味します。
これらのものから引き離されて初めて、人は土地が変わっても変わらないものを求めるようになります。そして、その変わらないものを、私達は「神」と呼んでいるのです。
驚くなかれ、その現代的な例が私達なのです。私達の多くは母国を離れ、この国にやってきました。母国にいれば受ける必要のないチャレンジを私達は数え切れないほど経験してきました。しかし、そんな私達は自分の故郷を離れ、友人や親類がいない外国で、神と出会ったのです。
今、こうして教会の礼拝に集っているということを考えてみてください。もし、アメリカに来ることなく、日本にいたならば私は生涯、イエス・キリストに出会うことがなかっただろうなと思う方、どれくらい、いますか・・・。

ヤコブ：故郷を離れて暮らす者達へ

先週は一米先生がイサクについてお話しくださいました。彼とその妻リベカの間には二人の息子、エサウとヤコブが与えられました。父イサクは長男であるエサウに祝福を注ぎたいと願っていました。しかし、妻リベカと次男ヤコブの策略により、イサクとエサウは騙されて、その祝福はヤコブに注がれました。
父イサクを騙して祝福を奪ったヤコブに対して兄、エサウは殺意をもちます。そのことを知った母リベカはヤコブを自分の兄であるラバンの元に逃げさせました。今日は、そのヤコブの逃避行についてお話しします。
皆さん、親元を離れた日のことを覚えていますか。私は１９８７年、１８歳の時にアメリカにやってきました。今でも忘れません。デルタ航空で明け方５時頃にトランジットのために、ポートランド空港に降り立ちました。肌寒く、薄暗い、早朝の閑散とした空港。もはや自分は家族や友人達と同じ土地の上には立っていないのだという思いが心に迫りました。
テネシー州にある大学の寮に着いて、まだ他の生徒が戻ってないガランとした寮の部屋に案内されました。部屋にスーツケースを置き、共有トイレに行っている間に、風が吹き、オートロックのドアがしまり、部屋に入ることができなくなりました。
どこへ行って、何と言ったらいいのだろうか。そこは東京ではありません。そこにガリバーのような学生が目の前に現れました。私の目線は彼のおヘソにありました。その彼に「鍵を部屋に置いたまま、トイレに行ったら、風が吹いてドアが閉まってしまった」と説明できる英語力は、その時の私にはありませんでした。その時に思いました「もう、ダメだ、日本に帰ろう」。それが入寮初日に起きた出来事です。
この夏、子供をどこか遠くの地に送り出した人がいるかもしれません。初めて家を離れる子供達はそのいく先々で色々な経験をすることでしょう。自分で食事を調達し、服を洗い、熱が出れば自分で何とかしなければなりません。
彼らは自分で考え、自分で決め、自分の生き方に責任を持たなければならなくなります。しかし、親にとって子供はいくつになっても子供。元気でいるのか。ちゃんと食べているのか。私達はいつも子供の幸せを祈ります。
兄の怒りを逃れたヤコブは一日の行程を歩き、日が暮れて、石を枕に大地に伏して寝たと創世記は記しています。
創世記２８章１０節ー２２節 10さてヤコブはベエルシバを立って、ハランへ向かったが、11一つの所に着いた時、日が暮れたので、そこに一夜を過ごし、その所の石を取ってまくらとし、そこに伏して寝た。12時に彼は夢をみた。一つのはしごが地の上に立っていて、その頂は天に達し、神の使たちがそれを上り下りしているのを見た。13 そして主は彼のそばに立って言われた、「わたしはあなたの父アブラハムの神、イサクの神、主である。あなたが伏している地を、あなたと子孫とに与えよう。14あなたの子孫は地のちりのように多くなって、西、東、北、南にひろがり、地の諸族はあなたと子孫とによって祝福をうけるであろう。15わたしはあなたと共にいて、あなたがどこへ行くにもあなたを守り、あなたをこの地に連れ帰るであろう。わたしは決してあなたを捨てず、あなたに語った事を行うであろう」。16ヤコブは眠りからさめて言った、「まことに主がこの所におられるのに、わたしは知らなかった」。17そして彼は恐れて言った、「これはなんという恐るべき所だろう。これは神の家である。これは天の門だ」。18ヤコブは朝はやく起きて、まくらとしていた石を取り、それを立てて柱とし、その頂に油を注いで、19その所の名をベテルと名づけた。その町の名は初めはルズといった。20ヤコブは誓いを立てて言った、「神がわたしと共にいまし、わたしの行くこの道でわたしを守り、食べるパンと着る着物を賜い、21安らかに父の家に帰らせてくださるなら、主をわたしの神といたしましょう。22またわたしが柱に立てたこの石を神の家といたしましょう。そしてあなたがくださるすべての物の十分の一を、わたしは必ずあなたにささげます」。
ヤコブは不安だったと思います。今までは父母の保護のもとを生きてきました。しかし、今、彼を見守る目はどこにもありません。
ヤコブの家があるべエルシバから、叔父がいるハランまでは約４７０マイル（約７５０キロ）ありました。地図を見ますと、その道のりのほとんどは何もない荒野だということが分かります。そこにはイエス様が語られた「良きサマリヤ人の譬話」に出てくるような追い剥ぎがいたかもしれません。しかし、今のように９１１をして助けに来てくれる人はいないのです。人間に襲いかかるような獣もいたでしょう。
一日、埃まみれになって歩き、静寂に包まれた荒野で、ヤコブはおそらく人生で初めて一人で野宿をしました。見上げる夜空。家族や友人、住み慣れた家を思い出したことでしょう。父イサクや兄エサウを騙したことを思い出し、自分の心にあるずる賢さを内省したかもしれません。
俺はいったい、ここで何をしているのだ。これからの人生、どうなるのだろう。愛する人たち、安心できる家、それらを失った彼は初めて自分自身と向き合うことになったことでしょう。彼はそこで夢を見ました。一つのはしごが地の上に立っていて、その頂きは天に達し、神の使いたちがそれを上り下りしており、主の声が聞こえました。
創世記２８章１０節ー２２節 「わたしはあなたの父アブラハムの神、イサクの神、主である。あなたが伏している地を、あなたと子孫とに与えよう。14あなたの子孫は地のちりのように多くなって、西、東、北、南にひろがり、地の諸族はあなたと子孫とによって祝福をうけるであろう。15わたしはあなたと共にいて、あなたがどこへ行くにもあなたを守り、あなたをこの地に連れ帰るであろう。わたしは決してあなたを捨てず、あなたに語った事を行うであろう」
その時、ヤコブは眠りから覚めて言ったのです。「まことに主がこの所におられるのに、わたしは知らなかった」（１７）。
主にある皆さん、神は一人、逃げるようにして実家を飛び出してきたヤコブに現れ、語られたのです。心身ともに彼を保護する家でヤコブは神に出会ったのではなくて、孤立無援、荒野の只中で、彼は主が自分と共にいることに気がついたのです。自分が寄り頼んでいたものを失った、その時に、神自らが彼に現れ、語りかけたのです。
思えば聖書の人物たちは皆、この道を歩んできました。アブラハムは故郷と親族を離れて神の示す地に出て行く事により神と出会いました。このヤコブの息子のヨセフもエジプトという異教の国へ奴隷として売られていき、その中に神の救いの計画がなされていきました。
ヨセフの後、イスラエルの民がエジプトを出て行く時、彼らは荒野をさまよい、そこで神に出会ったのです。イスラエルの民はその頑なさのゆえに、異国バビロンに捕囚となりました。神はその時も彼らに語り続けました。

ある時はエジプトに、ある時はバビロンに、イスラエルの民は住み慣れた母国を離れ、異文化の中に囚われ、その中で神は彼らにご顕現なされたのです。
ヤコブは兄の殺害から逃れている身。携帯などない時代。自分がどこにいるのか知る者は誰もいない。もし、この荒野で強盗や猛獣に襲われたら、誰も自分の屍を発見もできないだろうというような状況。骨身に染みて孤独を感じた夜。
その荒野の只中で彼は神が自分と共にいるということを知ったのです。そして、驚くべきことは、私達の背後には故郷を離れ、孤独に地に伏すヤコブに現れた神と同じ神がおられるのです。主にある皆さん、皆さんはこのことを心に据えて毎日を生きていますか。
聖書において、神がイスラエルの民を育むために用いた舞台は荒野でした。ヤコブは荒野に転がっている石の上に頭を乗せて眠りました。イスラエルの民が４０年、荒野をさまよった時に神様は荒野に水を沸かせ、マナを天から降らせ、昼は雲の柱、夜は火の柱を持って彼らを導きました。
預言者エリヤはバアルの預言者との戦いに圧勝しました。それでも自分の命を狙うイゼベルの言葉に恐れおののき、一日の道のりほどの荒野に入り、神に向かい、こう言います。「主よ、もはやじゅうぶんです。今わたしの命を取ってください」しかし、神はその所で彼に御使いを遣わし、パンと水を与え、彼は十分な休息を取り、力づけられたと列王記上１９章に記されています。
ダビデは自分の息子アブサロムから命を狙われ追われて荒野に逃れました。彼は、その体験について詩篇６３篇で言っています。
詩篇６３篇８節 「わたしの魂はあなたにすがりつき、あなたの右の手はわたしをささえられる」
ダビデの心には彼の先祖達が皆、荒野で神の右の手によって支えられた、その右の手が私をも支えているという確信がありました。預言者エレミヤも自らの先祖達が荒野で神と共に生きたということを念頭に置きました。そして、彼らにとって荒野がどのような場所であったか、明確に主が語られた言葉を書き残しました。
エレミヤ書３１章２節、３節 主はこう言われる「つるぎをのがれて生き残った民は、荒野で恵みを得た。イスラエルが安息を求めた時、主は遠くから彼に現れた。わたしは限りない愛をもってあなたを愛している。それゆえ、わたしは絶えずあなたに真実を尽くしてきた」
我々の先祖は皆、荒野で神の恵みを受けた。神はそこで彼らに限りない愛を示し、神は彼らに絶えず真実を尽くしてくださったとエレミヤは言ったのです。
パウロがダマスコ途上で回心した後、彼はエルサレムに行かずに、アラビアに行き、そこで三年を過ごしました。それは当時、ナバデア王国が栄えていた場所で今日、ヨルダンのペトラ遺跡がある場所だと言われており、その遺跡はまさしく荒野の只中にあります。彼はそこで自分の半生を思い、先祖たちに現れた神とイエス・キリストの関係を熟慮し、神と向き合ったのでしょう。
バプテスマのヨハネは彼の時が来るまで荒野に留まって、イエスの先駆者となるべく時を、静かに神と共に待ち望みました。ペテロは自分の師であるイエスを裏切るという、まさしく精神的な荒野をさまよいました。しかし、その彼に神の御手は伸ばされました。
あの１９８７年、１８歳の夏、アメリカに発つ日、母が私に言ったことが忘れられません。「あなたにはヤコブの経験をしてきてほしい」その時、私は彼女が言った言葉が理解できませんでした。しかし、今なら彼女が一人息子に願っていた思いが分かります。
あなたはこれから初めて、親元を離れる。言葉も文化も違う国で孤独を感じるだろう。あなたは私の保護が届かない土地で生きていく。私はあなたが、ヤコブが石の枕で一人、寝た経験をすることを願っている。
そして、その所で日本を離れても、家族と離れても、あなたと共にいる神様に出会って欲しい。アメリカ大陸には私一人、親族はおらず、言葉は通じない。ましてやテネシー州、日本を思い起こさせるものは何もありません。当初、確かにその経験は荒野と呼ばれるような経験と思われました。しかし、今、あの時を振り返る時にヤコブの言葉は私の心にぴったりと重なるのです。
創世記２８章１６節 「まことに主がこの所におられるのに、わたしは知らなかった」
あの時、私は入寮初日に「日本に帰ろう」と思いました。しかし、今、アメリカで過ごした年月は私の人生の半分を超えました。振り返ればこれまでの歩み、主は片時も離れずに、私と共におられました。見えない御手をもって、私を支えてくれていました。そして、その主は今も変わらず、私と共にいてくださいます。そして、これからも神は私と共におられます。皆さん、このこと以上に大切なことが、私達の人生にあるでしょうか。
もしかしたら今、「あの私の荒野に確かに主はいたのだ」と思い起こしている方がいるかもしれません。「あの時、確かに私には不思議な助けがあった」と今、思い出したという方がいるかもしれません。
そして、ヤコブと同じような思いにいたっている方がいるかもしれません。「まことに主がその所におられたのに、わたしは知らなかった」。そのようなことに気がついている方達がもし、ここにいるのなら、おたずねしたい。「その神とこれからの人生を歩んでいく、そのことを拒む理由があなたには、ありますか」
私達はこれまで一生懸命に生きてきました。これからも一生懸命に生きていきます。それは大切なことです。しかし、全知全能の神と共に生きていくことは、私達の一生懸命とは比較にならないほど、心強いものなのです。
私達にこの神は語りかけているのです。「わたしは限りない愛をもってあなたを愛している。それゆえ、わたしは絶えずあなたに真実を尽くしてきた」ヤコブは神が共におり、その神がこれからも彼と共にいることを知り、こう誓ったのです。

ヤコブは誓ったのです。「主を私の神とします」と。
神様は今も、この誓いと共に、私達にくださっている命を私達が、主と共に使うことを願っているのです。そして、それこそが人間に与えられた命の使い方なのです。
主にある皆さん、ヤコブのように、主を「わたしの神」としませんか。イスラエルの民は荒野で試みを受けました。しかし、その荒野で彼らはさらに大きな神の恵みを受けたのです。
もし今、皆さんの中に荒野を歩んでいるような方がおりましたら、そこにも神がいるということを心に留めて、ここからお帰りください。今日「まことに主がこの所におられるのに、わたしは知らなかった」ということに気がつかされたという方は本当に幸いだと思います。そこから新しい人生が始まります。それは主と共に歩む人生です。
神は荒野で私達に大切なことを気がつかせるお方。神はイスラエルの民を諸外国に導き、言葉も文化も異なる場所で、誠に頼るべきお方として彼らに現れたのです。彼らは荒野にいたからこそ、寄るべき者を失ったからこそ、神の恵みを見出したのです。「主を私の神として、これからの人生を生きていきます」その人はどんなに幸いなのだろう、私は心からそう思います。
お祈りしましょう。
Jacob: To Those Who Live Away from Home

Last week, Pastor Ichibei spoke about Isaac. He and his wife Rebekah were given two sons, Esau and Jacob. Isaac as a father wanted to pour out his blessings on his firstborn son, Esau. However, through the trickery of his wife Rebekah and his second son Jacob, Isaac and Esau were deceived and their blessings were poured out on Jacob.
Esau, has murderous intentions toward Jacob, who has deceived his father Isaac and taken away his blessing. When his mother Rebekah learned of this, she sent Jacob fleeing to her brother Laban.Today, I will tell you about that escape made by Jacob.
Do you remember the day you left your parents? I came to the United States in 1987 when I was 18 years old. I still remember it. I landed at the Portland airport at 5:00 a.m. at dawn on Delta Airlines in order to catch another flight. Chilly, dimly lit, deserted airport in the early morning. The thought that I was no longer standing on the same land as my family and friends loomed over me.
When I arrived at the university dormitory in Tennessee, I was shown to a room in an empty dorm where no other students had yet returned. While I left my suitcase in my room and went to the shared bathroom, the wind blew and the auto-locking door slammed shut, preventing me from entering my room.
Where should I go and what should I say? It is not Tokyo there. Then a student like Gulliver appeared before me. My eyes were in line with his belly button. I did not have the English skills at that time to explain to him that I had left the key in the room, went to the bathroom, and the wind blew the door shut. At that time I thought, “Oh, no, I should go back to Japan.” That is what happened on my first day in the dormitory.
Some of you may have sent your children off to someplace far away this summer. Children leaving home for the first time will have many experiences along the way. They must procure their own food, wash their own clothes, and take care of themselves if they develop a fever.
They will have to think for themselves, make their own decisions, and take responsibility for their own lives. But to parents, children are children no matter how old they are. How are you doing? Are you eating well? We always pray for the happiness of our children.
Having escaped his older brother’s wrath, Jacob walked a day’s journey, and at sunset, he lay down on the ground with a stone as a pillow. This is recorded in Genesis.
Genesis 28:10-22. 10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” 18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will give You a tenth.”
I think Jacob was worried. Until now, he had lived under the protection of his parents. But now, there was no one who was watching over him.
It was about 470 miles (roughly 750 kilometers) from Beersheba, where Jacob’s house is located, to Haran, where his uncle is located. The map shows that most of the way there is empty wilderness. There may have been highway robbers there, like the one in the Parable of the Good Samaritan that Jesus told. However, there is no one who would come to the aid by calling 911 as we can do now. There were probably also wild beasts that would attack people.
After a day of dusty walking and silent wilderness, Jacob camped alone in the field for perhaps the first time in his life. Looking up at the night sky. He must have remembered his family and friends, and his familiar home. Remembering how he had deceived his father Isaac and his brother Esau, he might have reflected on the deceit in his own heart.
What in the world am I doing here? What will happen to my life from now on? Losing his loved ones and his secure home, he would have had to face himself for the first time. He had a dream there. A stairway rested on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it, and the voice of the Lord was heard.
Genesis 28:10-22 “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
At that time Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it” (Genesis 28:17).
People in the Lord, God appeared and spoke to Jacob, who had fled his parents’ home, alone and on the run. Jacob did not encounter God in a house that sheltered both his body and soul, but in isolation, in the midst of the wilderness, he realized that the Lord was with him. He had lost what he had relied on, and at that moment, God Himself appeared to him and spoke to him.
Come to think of it, all of the biblical characters have walked this path. Abraham met God by leaving his homeland and relatives and going out to the land God showed him. Jacob’s son Joseph was also sold as a slave to the pagan land of Egypt, where God’s plan of salvation was worked out.
After Joseph, when the Israelites left Egypt, they wandered in the wilderness, where they met God. Because of their stubbornness, the Israelites were taken into captivity in the foreign land of Babylon. God continued to speak to them at that time.
People in the Lord, please go home today, taking this to heart. That is, “leaving a familiar place” is one of the ways in which God speaks to people.
By settling in one place, one builds one’s castle there. In other words, they seek their identity in their family, land, customs, culture, etc. Leaving there means losing stability and protection.
Only when people are pulled away from these things do they seek things that remain the same even though the land has changed. And we call that unchanging thing “God”. Not surprisingly, we are a contemporary example of this.
Many of us left our home countries and came to this country. We have experienced countless challenges that we would not have to take if we were in our home country. But then we left our own homeland and met God in a foreign country where we had no relatives or friends. Think about the fact that we are now gathered like this for a church worship service. How many of you think that if you had stayed in Japan instead of coming to the U.S., you would have never met Jesus Christ in your lifetime?
Sometimes in Egypt, sometimes in Babylon, the Israelites left their familiar homeland and were trapped in a foreign culture, where God was revealed to them.
Jacob is on the run to escape the murderous intentions of his brother. It was a time when there were no cell phones. No one knows where you are. The situation is such that if you were attacked by robbers or fierce animals in this wilderness, no one would even discover your corpse. It was a night when he felt the loneliness in his bones.
It was in the midst of that wilderness that he learned that God was with him. And the amazing thing is that surrounding us is the same God who appeared to Jacob when he left his homeland and lay down on the ground alone. People in the Lord, do you live your daily lives with this in mind?
In the Bible, the setting God used to nurture the Israelites was the wilderness. Jacob slept with his head on a stone lying in the wilderness. When the Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, God caused water to flow out in the wilderness and manna to fall from heaven, guiding them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
The prophet Elijah won an overwhelming victory in his battle against the prophets of Baal. Still fearful of the words of Jezebel, who sought his life, he went into the wilderness as far as a day’s journey, turns to God, and says: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take my life” However, it is recorded in 1 Kings 19, that God sent an angel to him in that place, and gave him bread and water, and he rested well and was strengthened.
David fled into the wilderness, pursued by his son Absalom, who wanted to kill him. He describes his experience in Psalm 63.
Psalm 63:8 I cling to You; Your right hand upholds me.
In David’s mind was the certainty that all his ancestors had been sustained by the right hand of God in the wilderness, and that that right hand was sustaining him as well.
The prophet Jeremiah also kept in mind that his ancestors had lived with God in the wilderness. And he clearly wrote down the words the Lord had spoken to them about what the wilderness was like for them.
Jeremiah 31:2, 3 2 This is what the Lord says: “The people who survive the sword will find favor in the wilderness; I will come to give rest to Israel. 3 The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”
All of our ancestors received God’s favor in the wilderness. Jeremiah said that God showed them boundless love there, and God was continually kind to them.
After Paul’s conversion while on his way to Damascus, he did not go to Jerusalem, but to Arabia, where he spent three years. It is said to be the site where the Nabataean kingdom flourished at that time, and where today the Petra ruins in Jordan are located, right in the middle of the wilderness. He must have faced God there, thinking about his own life, and contemplating the relationship between God who appeared to his ancestors and Jesus Christ.
John the Baptist remained in the wilderness until his time came, quietly waiting with God for the time to become the forerunner of Jesus. Peter wandered in the very spiritual wilderness of denying Jesus, his Master. But God’s hand was stretched out to him.
I will never forget what my mother said to me on the day I left for the United States that summer of 1987, when I was 18 years old. “I want you to go through what Jacob experienced.”
At that time, I did not understand a word she said. But now I understand what she wished for her only son. You are now leaving your parent for the first time. You will feel lonely in a country with a different language and culture. You will live in a land where you will not have my protection. I hope you have the experience of Jacob sleeping, alone, on a pillow of stone.
And I want for you at that place, to meet God who is with you, even when you are away from Japan or your family. I am the only one in America, I have no relatives, and I do not speak the language. And moreover, I am in Tennessee, where there is nothing that reminds me of Japan. Initially, the experience certainly seemed like what one might call a wilderness experience. But now, when I look back on that time, Jacob’s words ring true to my heart.
Genesis 28:16 “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
At that time, on my first day in the dormitory, I thought, “I should go back to Japan.” But now, the years I have spent in the U.S. are more than half of my life. Looking back, the Lord has never left me, and has been with me every step of the way. He was supporting me with His invisible hand. And that Lord is still with me now as ever before. And God will continue to be with me. Ladies and gentlemen, what could be more important in our lives than this?
Perhaps some of you are now recalling, “The Lord was indeed there in that wilderness of mine.” Some of you may be remembering now, “I certainly had some amazing help at that time.”
And some of you may have come to the same thought as Jacob. “Surely the Lord was in that place, and I was not aware of it.” If there are people here who are aware of such things, I would like to ask you. Is there any reason for you to refuse to walk with that God for the rest of your life?
We have lived so far as best as we could. We will continue to live as best as we can. That is important. But living with Almighty God is so much more reassuring than our best that we can.
This God is speaking to us. “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” Jacob knew that God was with him and that God would continue to be with him, and he vowed the following.
Genesis 28:20-22. 20 “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”
Jacob vowed, “the Lord will be my God.”
God, even now, along with this vow, wants us to use the life He has given us together with Him. And that is how we use the life we have been given.
People in the Lord, let us like Jacob, make the Lord “my God”. The Israelites were tested in the wilderness. However, in that wilderness they received an even greater blessing from God. If any of you are walking in the wilderness right now, please go home from here, taking to heart that God is even there.
I think it is a true blessing for those who have realized today that “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” From there, a new life begins. It is a life of walking with the Lord.
God is the one who makes us realize what is important to us in the wilderness. God led the Israelites to foreign countries and appeared to them as the One they could truly rely on in places with different languages and cultures. It was because they were in the wilderness, because they had lost their support base, that they found God’s favor. “I will live my life from now on with the Lord as my God.” I truly believe that such a person is truly blessed.

５）神様は荒野でイスラエルの民を導きました。あなたが「荒野」から想像することは何ですか。「荒野」を考えるときに、聖書の中でどんな場面を思い起こしますか。なぜ神様は荒野で民に語り、教えたのでしょうか。
６）エレミヤ書３１章２節、３節を読みましょう。エレミヤは彼の先祖は皆、荒野で恵みを得たと書き残しました。そして、神は限りない愛をもって彼らを愛し、絶えず、真実を尽くしてきたと言いました。あなたはこの言葉を自分に語りかけている言葉として受け止めることができますか。
７）ヤコブは神が共にいることを知り、「主をわたしの神といたしましょう」と言いました。そのことは、私たちにどんな生き方を求めるのでしょうか。
