ボアズは遊女であったラハブの子として生まれました。「私の母は遊女でした」という子供が、どのような環境に生きなければならないのかということを私達は想像します。そこから良き影響を受けることはまずないでしょう。それどころか、このことはその子の心に癒し難い深い傷を負わせるでしょう。心には憎しみや怒り、不信感が蓄積され、それはその後の人生に暗い影を落とす可能性が多分にあるでしょう。
それではこの遊女ラハブの息子、ボアズとはどんな人ですか？精神不安定、疑心暗鬼、言い知れぬ復讐心や怒りを心に抱えている男でしょうか。ボアズとは、あのルツの夫となる人です。私はボアズの人となりをルツ記に読む時に、彼の人格に感服します。同じ男として、本当に立派な男だなと思います。彼には遠く及びませんが、彼のような夫になりたいと憧れを抱かせる男です。
彼は心が広くて、未亡人ナオミとルツの悲しみをありのまま包み込み、彼女達に底知れぬ優しさを示しました。彼ほど女性に優しく接した、礼儀のあるジェントルマンは聖書の中にいません。深い情がありながら、心は常に冷静で、知恵に満ち、彼女達を守り、自らの責任を確実に果たした頼もしい男です。心ない男達の理不尽な取り扱いを受けてきた遊女ラハブの息子は聖書中、最も女性を労り、女性を大切にする男となりました・・・。

ラハブ：ボアズを育てた母

この一ヶ月、サンクスギビング、クリスマス、そして新年に即したメッセージをお話ししてきました。今日から「人から学び、神と共に生きる」というメッセージ・シリーズを再開します。このシリーズは聖書に登場する人間を通して、どのようにして神と共に生きるかということを知るシリーズです。
今朝、お話します舞台は紀元前８０００年頃から実在していたと言われている、死海の北西部にあったエリコという世界最古の町です。このエリコの町に紀元前１５００年頃にラハブという女性が住んでいました。
このラハブは「遊女」であったと聖書は記録しています。彼女がどうして遊女となったのか、私達には分かりません。想像できることは、彼女には遊女にならなければならない事情があったということです。言うまでもなく、その事情はラハブが望んだことではなく、そこには彼女の辛く、悲しい境遇や生い立ちがあっただろうと私達は察します。そんな彼女がなぜ聖書に登場するのか、ヨシュア２章１節‐７節にはこう記されています。
ヨシュア２章１節‐７節１ヌンの子ヨシュアは、シッテムから、ひそかにふたりの斥候をつかわして彼らに言った、「行って、その地、特にエリコを探りなさい」。彼らは行って、名をラハブという遊女の家にはいり、そこに泊まったが、２エリコの王に、「イスラエルの人々のうちの数名の者が今夜この地を探るために、はいってきました」と言う者があったので、３エリコの王は人をやってラハブに言った、「あなたの所にきて、あなたの家にはいった人々をここへ出しなさい。彼らはこの国のすべてを探るためにきたのです」。４しかし、女はすでにそのふたりの人を入れて彼らを隠していた。そして彼女は言った、「確かにその人々はわたしの所にきました。しかし、わたしはその人々がどこからきたのか知りませんでしたが、５たそがれ時、門の閉じるころに、その人々は出て行きました。どこへ行ったのかわたしは知りません。急いであとを追いなさい。追いつけるでしょう」。６その実、彼女はすでに彼らを連れて屋根にのぼり、屋上に並べてあった亜麻の茎の中に彼らを隠していたのである。７そこでその人々は彼らのあとを追ってヨルダンの道を進み、渡し場へ向かった。あとを追う者が出て行くとすぐ門は閉ざされた。
イスラエルの民がモーセの後継者であるヨシュアのリーダーシップのもとにあった時、ヨシュアはエリコを攻略すべく、二人のスパイを送りました。その時にこのスパイはラハブの家におり、噂を聞いたエリコの王が身の危険を感じて、ラハブの家に使者を送ったというのです。その時、ラハブの家の屋上に、この二人のスパイが隠れていたのですが、詰問されるラハブは、虚偽の証言をして、彼らを守ったというのです。
皆さん、ここにはとても大切なことが記されています。それは、この時、彼女には何でも話すことができる自由が与えられていたということです。彼女にはその二人を引き渡す自由、またそうさせない自由がありました。もし彼女がこのスパイを隠し、そのことがばれたら、ラハブの身は危険にさらされたことでしょう。彼女はそのことを十分に承知していました。
しかし、彼女はその時、身の危険を知りつつも、スパイを引き渡さなかったのです。なぜ、彼女はそのような命がけの決断をしたのでしょうか。王から遣わされた使者が帰ったことを確認すると、彼女は二人のスパイがいる屋上にあがり、こう言いました。
ヨシュア２章９節‐１１節９「主がこの地をあなたがたに賜わったこと、わたしたちがあなたがたをひじょうに恐れていること、そしてこの地の民がみなあなたがたの前に震えおののいていることをわたしは知っています。１０あなたがたがエジプトから出てこられた時、主があなたがたの前で紅海の水を干されたこと、およびあなたがたが、ヨルダンの向こう側にいたアモリびとのふたりの王シホンとオグにされたこと、すなわちふたりを、全滅されたことを、わたしたちは聞いたからです。１１わたしたちはそれを聞くと、心は消え、あなたがたのゆえに人々は全く勇気を失ってしまいました。あなたがたの神、主は上の天にも、下の地にも、神でいらせられるからです。9
この彼女の言葉にはとても大切なことが記されています。まずラハブは二人のスパイがエジプトから逃れてきたイスラエル人であることを知っていました。神が彼らのために紅海の水を左右に分けて、彼らを逃がしたことを彼女は知っていました。またイスラエルが直面した戦（いくさ）において驚くべき戦果を挙げてきたことも彼女は知っていました。実際に彼女はこれらを目撃したわけではありませんでしたが、そのイスラエルの歩みを心に留めていたのです。彼女はこれらの事実（FACTS）を得ていたのです。そして、これらの事実に基づいて、彼女の心に確信となっていることを語ります。
「あなたがたの神、主は上の天にも、下の地にも、神でいらせられるからです」 （ヨシュア２章１１節）
ラハブは生ける神がイスラエルに成された事実を知り、それについて考え、そのことに基づいて、自分で決断をし、行動に出たのです。興味深いことに、このラハブの言動について、へブル人の手紙を書いた記者は短く、このような言葉によってまとめています。
へブル１１章３１節「信仰によって、遊女ラハブは、探りにきた者達を穏やかに迎えたので、不従順な者どもと一緒に滅びることはなかった」
この記者が言わんとしていることは、ラハブが自分で考え、決断したことは、彼女の信仰によってなされたことだったということです。彼女がした決断は、まだ見ぬことに対して一歩、前に出た決断ですから、確かにそこには信仰がともなったことでしょう。
ラハブがイスラエルのスパイを隠したこと。使者を追い返したということは、リスクのともなうことでした。彼女はそのことによって命を失ったかもしれないのです。しかし、ラハブはイスラエルの神を知り、そのことについて考え、信じ、そこに自分の人生をかける決断をしたのです。そして、彼女がこの信仰の決断をした時から、神様は彼女をその保護の元においたのです。さらに、この出来事はここで終わりませんでした。彼女は続けてスパイに向かってこう言いました。
ヨシュア２章１２節‐１４節１２それで、どうか、わたしがあなたがたを親切に扱ったように、あなたがたも、わたしの父の家を親切に扱われることを、いま主をさして誓い、確かなしるしをください。１３そしてわたしの父母、兄弟、姉妹およびすべて彼らに属するものを生きながらえさせ、わたしたちの命を救って、死を免れさせてください」。１４ふたりの人は彼女に言った、「もしあなたがたが、われわれのこのことを他に漏らさないならば、われわれは命にかけて、あなたがたを救います。また主がわれわれにこの地を賜わる時、あなたがたを親切に扱い、真実をつくしましょう」。
彼女は大胆に自分の願うところをスパイに求めました。そして、それは受け入れられました。後にこの彼女の決断が、彼女とその家族を救っていくことになるのです。この彼女の決断は、彼女自身のみならず、彼女の家族の救いのための決断でもあったのです。
家庭の中にはその先頭に立ち、舵を取る者がいます。その者の信仰による決断はその人のみならず、同じ船に乗る者達にも影響があるということをこの言葉は示しています。
二週間前にモーセの命を救った助産婦、モーセの母と姉、パロの娘についてお話しました。彼女達の勇気はモーセの命を救い、ひいてはイスラエル民族を救ったのです。その彼女達に共通していたことは彼女たちが弱い立場にありながらも、勇気をもって、自らなすべきことを決断したということでした。驚くべきことにここにも勇気をもった女性、ラハブがいるのです。二週間前にも取り上げた言葉を今日も取り上げます。イエス・キリストは言われました。
ヨハネ１６章３３節「あなたがたはこの世では悩みがある。しかし、勇気を出しなさい。私は既に世に勝っている」。
このイエス様の言葉を黙想していた時、こう思いました。「あなたがたはこの世では悩みがある」と言った後に、イエス様は色々なことを言えたのではなかろうか。
「あなたがたはこの世では悩みがある。だから死にものぐるいでがんばれ！」「あなたがたはこの世では悩みがある。それは仕方のないことだから諦めろ！」
イエス様はそうは言いませんでした。イエス様は一言、「勇気を出しなさい」と言われたのです。主イエスが私達に求めることはあれも、これもと多くはない、ただ、勇気だけなのです。私達の勇気ある一歩なのだ。その一歩から全てが始まるからです。
そして、私達の始めの一歩と共に主は私達と共に、いてくださいます。ラハブは勇気をもって「スパイはここにはいない」と言いました。神様は彼女のこの勇気ある証言を御心に留め、彼女とその家族を守ったのです。
当初、私達が信じて前に進み出ることには迷いや恐れが伴います。それは人間として普通の感情です。しかし、信じる者と共に神はあり、そこには報いが伴います。よくキリスト教は「ご利益宗教ではありません」と言います。しかし、実際のところ、それは正しくなく、キリスト教はとてつもない報いを私達に約束しています。スパイをかくまったラハブに対して彼らはこのような言葉を残していきました。
ヨシュア２章１５節‐２０節１７ふたりの人は彼女に言った「あなたがわれわれに誓わせたこの誓いについて、われわれは罪を犯しません。１８われわれがこの地に討ち入る時、わたしたちをつりおろした窓に、この赤い糸のひもを結びつけ、またあなたの父母、兄弟、およびあなたの父の家族をみなあなたの家に集めなさい。１９ひとりでも家の戸口から外へ出て、血を流されることがあれば、その責めはその人自身のこうべに帰すでしょう。われわれに罪はありません。しかしあなたの家の中にいる人に手をかけて血を流すことがあれば、その責めはわれわれのこうべに帰すでしょう。２０またあなたが、われわれのこのことを他に漏らすならば、あなたがわれわれに誓わせた誓いについては、われわれに罪はありません」。
ラハブはその信仰ゆえに、その町が彼らにより、滅ぼされる時に彼女の家とその中に留まっている者達とその家族は守られるという約束をとりつけました。そして、その時に目印となるものとして「赤いひも」が彼女に手渡されたのです。
赤いひもという目印で、私達には思い起こされることがあります。それはこの出来事の前に起きたことです。すなわち、あのモーセがエジプトを出てくる最後の晩に神様はイスラエルの民達の羊を屠り、その血を家の門に塗りなさいといわれました。
そして、その血の目印のついた家に関して、神様はその家を過ぎ越されて、そこに住む者達に死をもたらさなかったという、あの「過ぎ越し」の赤い血の出来事です。同じように、このところにおいても赤いひもが、ラハブとその家族の救いの目印となっていくのです。
すなわちその赤いひもが、窓につけられているラハブの家は救われるというのです。言うまでもありません、この赤ひもは、イスラエル人が家の門に塗った血と重なるものです。そして、このことはイエス・キリストが私達の罪のために十字架にかけられて流してくださったその血を指差すものとなるのです。
実にラハブはモーセの過ぎ越しにおける血とイエス様が十字架において流された血の間に立って、その十字架を指し示した女性となったのです。聖書には多くの人間が出てきますが、キリストを指差すというような特権と光栄が与えられている人は本当に限られた人たちだけなのです。さらに驚くべきことは彼女の名前がマタイ一章にあるイエス・キリストの系図の中に含まれているということです。
マタイの福音書１章３節-６節「ユダに、タマルによってパレスとザラが生まれ、パレスにエスロンが生まれ、エスロンにアラムが生まれ、アラムにアミナダブが生まれ、アミナダブにナアソンが生まれ、ナアソンにサルモンが生まれ、サルモンに、ラハブによってボアズが生まれ、ボアズに、ルツによってオベデが生まれ、オベデにエッサイが生まれ、エッサイにダビデ王が生まれた」
当時の系図といえば、それは父の名前だけが記されるものでありましたが、聖書の系図には例外として、四人の女性が記されています。ラハブもその一人としてイエス・キリストに連なる人の中にその身を置いたのです。それは彼女にとって、驚くべき、永遠に刻まれる光栄となりました。
彼女がもしあの時に、あの勇気ある決断をしなければ、彼女の名を知る者は今日いなかったでしょうし、彼女もその家族も滅ぼされていたことでしょう。しかし、その決断が彼女のみならず、その家族、さらにはその後の子孫にいたるまで彼女は神の祝福を受け継ぐ者となりました。私はこの度、このメッセージを準備していてあることに気がつかされました。
この系図を見ますとラハブはボアズの母だったということに気がつきます。ボアズは遊女であったラハブの子として生まれたのです。「僕のお母さんは遊女でした」という子供が、どのような環境に生きなければならないのかということを私達は想像することができます。
残念ながら、その環境から子供が良き影響を受けることはまずないでしょう。それどころか、このことはその子の心に癒し難い深い傷を負わせるでしょう。心には憎しみや怒り、不信感が蓄積され、それはその後の人生に暗い影を落とす可能性が多分にあるでしょう。
それでは皆さん、この遊女ラハブの息子、ボアズとはどんな人ですか？精神不安定、疑心、言い知れぬ復讐心や、常に怒りを心に抱えていた男でしょうか。
皆さん、ボアズとは、あのルツの夫となる人です。私はボアズの人となりをルツ記に読む時に、彼の人格に感服します。同じ男として、本当に立派な男だなと思います。彼には遠く及びませんが、彼のような夫になりたいと憧れを抱かせる男です。皆さん、そう思いませんか。

人間的に考えたら、また今日の心理学なデータに従うのなら、遊女ラハブから、このような息子が育つことは、まずあり得ないと思われます。どうして彼女からこのようなボアズが生まれ育ったのでしょうか。
ある時、ボアズは身寄りなく、彼の所有する麦畑で、その日の糧となる落穂を拾い集めているルツにこう語りかけました
ルツ２章１２節「どうぞ、主があなたのしたことに報いられるように。どうぞ、イスラエルの神、主、すなわちあなたがその翼の下に身を寄せようとしてきた主からじゅうぶんの報いを得られるように」。
主にある皆さん、この言葉は「神の御翼の下に置かれること」を知っている者だけが語ることができる言葉です。「十分の報いを得られるように」という言葉は、神から十分な報いを受けた者だけが言える言葉なのです。
ボアズは母ラハブと共に神の御翼の下に置かれ、身に余るほど多くの神の恵みを経験したに違いありません。彼は母と同じ信仰を引き継ぎ、その同じ信仰に生きたのです。
ラハブの人生に何が起きたのか、その詳細について聖書は沈黙しています。想像できることは、あの二人のスパイとの出会いと、その時の彼女の信仰のコミットメントが彼女の人生のターニングポイントになったのではないかということです。遊女であることと、神と共に生きることは、決して両立することではありませんから、彼女はそのことからも離れたことでしょう。
そして、ラハブが信じる神は、その彼女の生い立ちや境遇を超えて、彼女の子ボアズの心に、良きものを残してくださったのでしょう。心ない男達の理不尽な取り扱いを受けてきた遊女ラハブの息子は、聖書中、最も女性を労り、大切にする男となったのです。
主にある皆さん、これが、神様がラハブに与えたとてつもなく大きな報いです。彼女の勇気ある決断に対して、神様は彼女の境遇を超えて、その子孫にまで祝福を注いでくださったのです。
そして、今を生きる私達の上にもこの神様の恵みが注がれているのです。女性、男性に限らず、私達のこれまでの人生、これまでしてきたこと、こんな自分が後世に何かいいものなど残せるのだろうか。
いいや、それどころか、子供たちに顔向けなどできない。戻れるものなら、あの時に戻ってやり直したいと思う方もいるかもしれません。それまで好き勝手に生きてきたのなら、人間的に考えれば、自分の力でそれを立て直すことは難しいものです。しかし、このことを今日、心に刻みましょう。私達の神は、ラハブを保護し、祝福し、ボアズを彼女に与え、この母子を育んだ神であるということを！
生きていくことには厳しさがともなうことを私達は知っています。でも実際に人生の何が厳しいのでしょうか？ 最近、私は思うのです。人生の本当の厳しさは、私達が自分自身で生きる道を決めなければならないという厳しさです。
アダムとエバの堕落は彼らがなした決断に対する厳しい結果の極みを私達に見せつけているのです。私達の自由意志に神様は介入しません。それは全て私たち一人一人に委ねられているのです。私達の自由意志は、私達の我欲やプライドがうごめく場所で、私達がたやすく決断を見誤ってしまう場所です。そこは愚かさと情けなさが噴出する場所なのです。
その自由意志の中で、どのように物事を決めていくのか、それが人生の本当の厳しさなのだと思います。誰がそんな自由意志をコントロールすることができるでしょうか。どうしたらその時にも、また将来にもつながる最善の決断をすることができるのでしょうか。これらのことは私達が自力でどうこうできることではありません。
しかし、もし、私達の決断に神様が介入してくださるのなら大丈夫です。まず、勇気をもって私と共に生きる決断をしなさい。そこから全てが始まると主は私達に語りかけます。
そして、私達には主の教会があります。教会はこの日々の決断に思い悩む者達が集う場所です。ここで私達は互いのために祈り、支え合います。ここは御言葉を通して天の知恵を分かち合う場所です。ここで私達は、私達の救い主イエス・キリストに対するコミットメントを日々、確かなものとしていくのです。
この後、「土の器」という賛美を歌います。私達は皆、土の器。壊れやすい器であり、そこには欠けがあり、そこにはヒビ割れがあることを私達は認めます。かつてのラハブの人生はまさしくそのような人生だったと言えますでしょう。
しかし、あの日、あの時の彼女の決断から全てが変わりました。以来、彼女のヒビや欠けからこぼれ出た神の愛と光は、彼女の家族、そして息子ボアズを包み、照らしたのです。
新しい年、２０２５年、今年も私達は色々なことを決めていくことでしょう。主にある皆さん、この２０２５年の冒険に一緒に出ていきませんか。ボアズを育てた母、ラハブの神と共に。

Rahab: The Mother Who Raised Boaz

Over the past month, we have been sharing messages related to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year. Today we resume our message series “Learning From People, How to Live with God”. This series is about knowing how to live with God through the people in the Bible.
The setting for this morning’s story is Jericho, the world’s oldest town northwest of the Dead Sea, which is said to have existed since around 8000 B.C. In this town of Jericho lived a woman named Rahab around 1500 B.C.
The Bible records that this Rahab was a “prostitute”. How she became a prostitute, we do not know. What we can imagine is that she had circumstances that required her to become a prostitute. Needless to say, the circumstances were not what Rahab would have wished, and we surmise that she had painful and sad circumstances and upbringing. Joshua 2:1-7 records for us why she comes out in the Bible.
Joshua 2:1-7 1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. 2 The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.” 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut.
When the Israelites were under the leadership of Joshua, Moses’ successor, Joshua sent two spies in order to capture Jericho. At that time, the spies were in Rahab’s house. When the king of Jericho heard of this, he sent a messenger to Rahab’s house, fearing for his safety. The two spies were hiding on the roof of Rahab’s house, and when Rahab was questioned, she gave false testimony to protect them.
Ladies and gentlemen, there is something very important recorded here. That is, at the time, she was given the freedom to talk as she wished. She had the freedom to hand the two men over, as well as the freedom to not do so. If she hid the spies and it had been discovered, Rahab would have found herself in danger. She was well aware of this.
But she did not hand over the spies at that time, even though she knew she was in danger. Why did she make such a life-threatening decision? When she was sure that the messenger sent by the king had gone, she went up to the roof where the two spies were, and said:
Joshua 2:9-11 9 “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.
In these words of hers are recorded some very important things. First, Rahab knew that the two spies were Israelites who had escaped from Egypt. She knew that God had divided the waters of the Red Sea for them to escape. She also knew that Israel had achieved amazing results in the battles it had faced. She did not actually witness these things, but she was mindful of Israel’s journey. She then speaks of what has become her heart’s conviction based on these facts.
for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. (Joshua 2:11)
Rahab knew the facts of what the living God had done for Israel, thought about them, and based on that, made her own decision and took action. Interestingly, the writer of Hebrews summed up Rahab’s words and actions in these short words.
Hebrews 11:31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.
What the writer is trying to say is that Rahab’s own thinking and decision were made by her faith. The decision she made was a step forward to something she had not yet seen, so it was certainly accompanied by faith.
Rahab’s concealment of the Israelite spies. The fact that she turned the messenger away was a risky thing to do. She could have lost her life over it. But Rahab came to know the God of Israel, thought about it, put her faith in Him, and made a decision to stake her life on Him. And from the moment she made this decision of faith, God placed her under His protection. Moreover, what took place did not end here. She went on to say to the spies:
Joshua 2:12-14 12 “Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” 14 “Our lives for your lives!” the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land.”
She boldly asked the spies what she wanted. And it was accepted. Later, this decision of hers would save her and her family. This decision she made was not only for her own salvation, but also for that of her family.
There is one person in the household who is at the head and takes the helm. These words indicate that a person’s decision by faith affects not only that person but also those in the same boat.
Two weeks ago, I talked about the midwives, Moses’ mother and sister, and the daughter of Pharaoh, who saved Moses’ life. Their courage saved Moses’ life and, in turn, the lives of the Israelites. What they all had in common was that despite their vulnerable position, they courageously made the decision to do what they had to do. Amazingly, here is another woman of courage, Rahab. I will bring up again, today, the words that I brought up two weeks ago. Jesus Christ said:
John 16:33 “In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (NASB)
As I was meditating on these words of Jesus, I thought to myself. Couldn’t Jesus have said a lot of things after saying, “In the world you have tribulation”?
“In the world you have tribulation, so do your best as if your life depended on it!” “In the world you have tribulation. It is inevitable, so just give up!”
Jesus did not say such things. Jesus said one word: “Take courage”. What the Lord Jesus asks of us is not so much this or that, but only courage. It is a courageous step for us. Because from that step, everything begins.
And with our first steps, the Lord is with us. Rahab courageously said, “There are no spies here”. God took this courageous testimony of hers to His heart, and protected her and her family.
Initially, there is hesitation and fear involved for us in moving forward in faith. Such are normal human emotions. However, God is with those who have faith, and with that comes rewards.
We often say that Christianity is “not a goriyaku shukyo (religion of benefits).” But in fact, that is not true, for Christianity promises us tremendous rewards. The spies who were concealed by Rahab left the following words for her.
Joshua 2:15-20 17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.”
Because of her faith, Rahab received a promise that her house and those who remained in it and their families would be protected when the city was destroyed by them. A “scarlet cord” was then handed to her as a sign.
We are reminded by the sign of the scarlet cord. It is what happened before this event. That is, on the last night of Moses’ departure from Egypt, God told the Israelites to slaughter a sheep and smear its blood on the doorposts of their house.
And as for the house marked with the blood, God passed over that house and did not bring death to those who lived there. It is that red blood event of that “Passover”.\Likewise, the scarlet cord will become a sign of salvation for Rahab and her family in this place.
In other words, the house of Rahab, whose scarlet cord is attached to the window, will be saved. Needless to say, this scarlet cord coincides with the blood that the Israelites applied to the doorposts of their homes. And this will point to that blood that Jesus Christ shed on the cross for our sins.
In fact, Rahab became the woman who stood between the blood of Moses at the Passover and the blood of Jesus shed at the cross, and pointed to that cross. There are many people in the Bible, but only a very limited number of people are truly given the privilege and honor of pointing to Christ. What is even more amazing is that her name is included in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in Matthew 1.
Matthew 1:3-6 3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of King David.
In those days, a genealogy would only list the father’s name, but the biblical genealogy makes an exception. Four women are listed. Rahab was one of those who placed herself among those who stood alongside of Jesus Christ. It was an amazing and everlasting honor for her.
If she had not made that courageous decision at that time, no one would know her name today, and she and her family would have been destroyed. But that decision made her the heir of God’s blessing, not only to her, but also to her family and even to her subsequent descendants. I have just realized something while preparing this message.
In this genealogy, we notice that Rahab was Boaz’s mother. Boaz was born the son of Rahab, a prostitute. We can only imagine what kind of environment a child who says, “My mother was a prostitute,” must live in.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the child will be influenced positively by that environment. On the contrary, this will cause a deep wound in the child’s heart that will be difficult to heal. Hatred, anger, and distrust will build up in the heart, which could possibly cast a dark shadow over the rest of one’s life.
So, ladies and gentlemen, what kind of person is Boaz, the son of this prostitute Rahab? Was he a man with mental instability, doubt, unspeakable vengeance, and constant anger in his heart?
Ladies and gentlemen, Boaz is the husband-to-be of that Ruth. I admire Boaz’s character when I read about him in the book of Ruth. As a fellow man, I think he is truly admirable.I am not quite there yet, but he is a man who makes me long to be a husband like him.
Ladies and gentlemen, don’t you think so? He had a big heart, and he embraced the sorrow of the widows Naomi and Rurth as they were, showing them unsparing kindness. There is no more courteous gentleman in the Bible who treated women as kindly as he did. He is a man of deep emotion, but always calm and wise at heart, a reliable man who gently protected them and ensured that he fulfilled his responsibilities.
From a human point of view, and according to today’s psychological data, it seems unlikely that such a son would grow up from Rahab, a prostitute.How could such a Boaz be born and raised from her?
On one occasion, Boaz spoke to Ruth, who was alone and gathering the fallen ears in his wheat field that would be her sustenance for that day.
Ruth 2:12 “May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
People in the Lord, these are words that can only be spoken by someone who knows that they are “placed under the wings of God”. Only someone who has received sufficient rewards from God can say the words, “May you be richly rewarded”.
Boaz must have experienced more of God’s grace than he could bear, as he and his mother Rahab were placed under God’s wings. He inherited the same faith as his mother and lived that same faith.
The Bible is silent on the details of what happened in Rahab’s life. What I can imagine is that her encounter with those two spies and her commitment to her faith at that time may have been a turning point in her life. Being a prostitute and living with God are never compatible, and thus she must have put such a life behind her.
And the God that Rahab believed in must have left something good in the heart of her child Boaz, which overshadowed her upbringing and circumstances. The son of Rahab, a prostitute who had been treated unreasonably by heartless men, became the man who worked and cared for women more than any other man in the Bible.
This, people in the Lord, is the tremendous reward that God had given to Rahab. For her courageous decision, God poured out his blessings to her descendants that overshadowed her circumstances.
And this grace of God is being poured out on those of us who live in the present. Whether women or men, the lives we have lived so far, what we have done so far, is there something good we can leave for future generations?
No, on the contrary, can we face our children? Some of you may wish you could go back and redo that time if you could. Humanly speaking, if you have lived as you please up to that point, it is difficult to rebuild it on your own. However, let us take this to heart today. That our God is the God who protected and blessed Rahab, gave her Boaz, and nurtured this mother and child!
We know that life is demanding. But what about life is so demanding? Lately, I think. The real demands of life are that we must decide for ourselves how to live.
The fall of Adam and Eve shows us the extreme consequences of the decisions they made. God does not intervene in our free will. It is entirely up to each of us. Our free will is where our selfishness and pride wriggle around, where we easily misjudge our decisions. It is a place where foolishness and pettiness erupt.
I think how we decide things in the midst of that free will is the real demanding part of our life. Who can control such a free will? How can we make the best decisions then and in the future? These are not things we can do on our own.
But if God intervenes in our decisions, it will be fine. First, courageously make the decision to live with Me. The Lord tells us, that is where it all begins.
And we have His church. The church is a place where those who are struggling with these daily decisions gather. Here we pray for and support each other. This is where we share heavenly wisdom through God’s Word. Here we confirm our daily commitment to Jesus Christ our Savior.
After the message, we will sing a praise song called “An Earthen Vessel”. We are all earthen vessels. We acknowledge that we are fragile vessels, with chips and cracks. One could say that Rahab’s life in the past was just such a life.
However, everything changed from her decision on that day and that time. Since then, the love and light of God that spilled out of her cracks and chips, covered and illuminated her family and son Boaz.
In this new year, 2025, we will be making a lot of decisions once again this year. People in the Lord, won’t you join me on this adventure in 2025. With the God of Rahab, the mother who raised Boaz.
