イエス・キリストの系図の中にはモアブ人のルツという女性がいます。モアブ人とは、その昔、酒に酔った父によってその娘が生んだ子を先祖とする者たちだということを知っていましたか（創世記１９章３６節、３７説）。このことは何を意味するのでしょうか？
今日、礼拝でお話した「日英礼拝メッセージ原稿」および「本日のおもちかえり」です↓。
ルツ記：はからずも神は・・・

２０１２年３月２５日、この礼拝に集いました私達は、皆、今日にいたるまでの人生の歩みがあります。それは夫婦であっても、親子であっても、一人一人異なるものです。そして、これからも「もういいよ、私のもとに来なさい」と父なる神様からお呼びがかかるその時まで、私達はその人生を歩んでいきます。
同じように今から約３０００年前に、ルツとナオミという二人の女性にも彼女たちの歩んだ人生がありました。その人生は私達のものとは異なりますが、今日は彼女達の心に私達の心を重ね合わせたいと思います。このメッセージの準備をしていて深く思わされていることは、時の隔たりはあれども、彼女たちが感じたであろうその気持ちを私達も十分に共有できるということです。今日は三つのことをお話します。１）「はからずも起きた出来事」、２）「買い取られるということ」、３）「神の広い愛」ということです。
「はからずも起きた出来事」
後にイエス・キリストが誕生する町、ベツレヘムにナオミは住んでいました（「ナオミ」という名前は私達、日本人にとって馴染み深い名前ですが、この名前は実際にユダヤ人の中にもあり、今も「ナオミ」と名づけられたアメリカ人と時々出会いますが、その多くはこのルツ記のナオミからとったものであると想像します）。ナオミはその自分の住んでいる国地域に飢饉があったために夫エリメレクと二人の息子と共にモアブという異国の地に移り住みます。しかし、その移り住んだ地で夫エリメレクに先立たれます。二人の息子はそれぞれモアブ人の妻を得ますが、この息子達もやがて亡くなります。彼女の夫と二人の息子がなぜ死んだのか、その理由について聖書は何も記していません。ただ、私達に分かることはナオミの心はどんなに痛んだかということです。特に我が子が自分よりも先に亡くなるということは親にとって、どんなに心引き裂かれるようなことだったでしょうか。
ナオミは自分の息子の妻となった、二人のまだ歳若い異国の嫁達に向かい、まだ先の長い人生に新たな夫が与えられ家庭を築くようにと、それぞれの実家に帰し、自分は故郷のベツレヘムに帰ろうと決心します。しかし、嫁達はそれを良しとしません。結局、一人の嫁は泣く泣く故郷に帰りますが、もう一人の嫁、ルツの決意は固く、二人はナオミの故郷、ルツにとっては異国であるベツレヘムに帰っていくのです。このようにこのルツ記はまず「飢饉」と「身内の死」、そして「別離」から始まります。なんと、悲しい始まりでしょうか。なんと、暗い始まりでしょうか。
そして、このようなことを聞きますと、これこそが私達の人生だということを思うのです。私達は誰しも思いがけない自然災害や事故に見舞われることがあります。また、私達が既に経験していますように、私達は愛する者の死に向き合わなければならないことがその人生にはあります。「さよならだけが人生さ」と言った人がいますが、あながちそれは間違ってはいません。
ナオミが約１０年ぶりに故郷、ベツレヘムに帰ったことはすぐに町中に知られました。今のように電話もない時代、故郷の者達が久しぶりに見た光景は、ナオミには夫も二人の息子もなく、ただ外国人のルツだけがナオミと共にいるというものです。ナオミは同郷の仲間に言いました「わたしをナオミ(楽しみ)と呼ばずに、マラ（苦しみ）と呼んで下さい」(ルツ記１章２０節)。
故郷に帰りましたこの二人の未亡人の生活は保障されていません。ナオミは高齢ゆえにはたらくことはできなかったのでしょう、嫁のルツは畑に出て、落ちている穂を集め始めました。そうです、それは文字通り、畑に落ちている穂を拾い集めて日々の糧とすることであり、この落穂拾いについて聖書にはこのような律法があったためです。
レビ記１９章９節-１０節
9あなたがたの地の実のりを刈り入れるときは、畑のすみずみまで刈りつくしてはならない。またあなたの刈入れの落ち穂を拾ってはならない。10あなたのぶどう畑の実を取りつくしてはならない。またあなたのぶどう畑に落ちた実を拾ってはならない。貧しい者と寄留者とのために、これを残しておかなければならない。わたしはあなたがたの神、主である。
申命記２４章１８節-２２節 18あなたはかつてエジプトで奴隷であったが、あなたの神、主がそこからあなたを救い出されたことを記憶しなければならない。それでわたしはあなたにこの事をせよと命じるのである。19あなたが畑で穀物を刈る時、もしその一束を畑におき忘れたならば、それを取りに引き返してはならない。それは寄留の他国人と孤児と寡婦に取らせなければならない。そうすればあなたの神、主はすべてあなたがする事において、あなたを祝福されるであろう。20あなたがオリブの実をうち落すときは、ふたたびその枝を捜してはならない。
それを寄留の他国人と孤児と寡婦に取らせなければならない。21またぶどう畑のぶどうを摘み取るときは、その残ったものを、ふたたび捜してはならない。それを寄留の他国人と孤児と寡婦に取らせなければならない。22あなたはかつてエジプトの国で奴隷であったことを記憶しなければならない。それでわたしはあなたにこの事をせよと命じるのである。
私達はこれまでヨシュア記や士師記を通して、カナンの地を征服してきたイスラエルの民の姿を見ています。しかし、これら神が与えた律法の書には、寄留の他国人に対する、孤児や寡婦に与えられているあわれみというものが記されています。まだ社会福祉などがなく、弱い者が強い者に飲み込まれてしまうことを良しとするような時代にこのような弱者救済の言葉が人間の側から出てくることはありえないことですが、神様はこのようなことにまで目を配り、それを律法としてイスラエルに与えていたのです。この律法ゆえにルツは落穂拾いによってナオミと自分の命をつなごうとしたのです。
しかし、そんなルツが落穂を拾うべく畑にやってきたその初日のことです。その時についてルツ記はこのように記録しています「ルツは行って、刈る人達のあとに従い、畑で落穂を拾ったが、彼女ははからずも（As it turned out）エリメレクの一族であるボアズの畑の部分にきた」（ルツ２章３節）。
覚えていらっしゃるでしょうか、ナオミの夫の名前を。そう、エリメレクです。ルツがやってきた畑はエリメレクの親戚となるボアズであり、彼は非常に裕福な人だったのです（ルツ２章１節）。このボアズはその初日にルツのことを知り、ボアズは彼女に目をかけ、水や食事までも与えます。また、彼の僕達にルツが多くを拾えるようにと、わざと穂を落としていくようにと命じます。このボアズとの出会いが、ルツとナオミの後の人生を大きく変えていくのです。
その出会いの発端をルツ記は「はからずも」と書いています。私達の多くはそれを「偶然に」と言います。しかし、わたしたちはこの「はからずも」という言葉の背後に神様の導きを見るのです。ルツ記を読む時にこの「はからずも」という言葉を読み過ごしてしまったら、ルツ記に記されている出来事は全て神の御手の中で起きたということを見過ごしてしまうことになるのです。
さらにいいますと私達はこの言葉を通して、私達の日々の生活の中にも起きてくる「はからずも」ということを見過ごしてはならないという教訓を得るのです。もし、私達の生活の中に思いがけない変化が起きる時、すなわち、私達に何かが与えられる時、何かを失う時、どこかに行く時、どこかから帰されるような時、そこにある「はからずも」を私達は神の御手の中にあるものとして受け止めるのです。ナオミとルツの場合、「飢饉」と「身内の死」、そして「別離」から、そして、ボアズの畑にルツが行ったという「はからずも」から神様は新しいことをなされたのです。
そして、これから見ていきますが、この新しいことは後に起きる事のために絶対不可欠なものとなるのです。二つめのことをお話しします。それは「買い取られるということ」です。
「買い取られるということ」
このルツ記には聖書の原語でありますヘブル語の「ガアール」という言葉が計九回、用いられています（４章４節に５回、６節に３回、７節に１回）。「ガアール」とは「贖う」という意味があり、この言葉こそ、実はこのルツの生涯を決定する重要な出来事に関係しています。
贖いとはあまり私達の日常では用いませんが、この言葉をよく見ますと、そこには「貝」という字が含まれています。ご存知のように太古の昔には「貝」が貨幣として用いられていましたゆえに、だいたい「貝」がつく言葉はお金と関係のある言葉です。すなわち、この贖うという言葉は「代価を払って買い取る」という意味があります。なぜ、ルツ記にこのように「買い取る」という言葉が何度もでてくるのでしょうか。それは「はからずも」出会ったボアズとルツの関係を示しているのです。
少し、説明しましょう。既にお話ししましたようにナオミとボアズは親戚でありました。当時、そのような親戚関係にある者の夫が亡くなった時に、その夫の親類がその女性を妻とする習慣がありました。このようなことは日本やアメリカでは馴染みのうすい風習ですが、今日の学者が言うには中近東、モンゴルやチベットなどではこのようなことは一般的になされていたといいます。亡くなった夫の兄弟がその未亡人の権利・義務を受け継ぐというようなケースになりますと、もっと世界中に広くみられるもののようです。
これらの制度は当時、未亡人が一人で生きていくことの厳しさから女性を守る一つの手段となっており、また戦闘の多い社会で、とかく男の命が失われやすいゆえに未亡人が増えてしまうということもあり、その対策として考えられていたとも言われています。
しかしながら、このようなことを受け入れるということは、たとえ親戚であっても、そこには肩代わりしなければならないこともあり、そう簡単に出来ることではなく、このルツ記にも記されているのですが、このことを躊躇する者たちも多くいたのです。しかし、ボアズは、これらのことを全て受け入れ、なすべき手続きをしっかりとして、エリメレクの地所と彼の名が郷里において断絶しないようにルツのために代価を払い、彼女を妻として迎え入れたのです。
ルツが最初にボアズに出会った時、彼の寛大な心に対して彼女はこう尋ねました「どうして、あなたは、わたしのような外国人を顧みて、親切にしてくださるのですか」（ルツ記２章１０節）。イエス・キリストが私達のために成してくださったことを知る私達は、このルツの言葉のように思うのです「どうして、あなたは、私のような罪人を顧みて、その命を捨ててくださったのですか」。
はからずも、小さな村、ベツレヘムの一角で起きたこの出来事が、やがて人類を揺り動かす出来事の型となっていることをこの時のルツもボアズも知りません。そうです、ボアズがルツを代価を払って自らと共に生きる者とし、彼女の命を救ったというこのところに、私達は後のイエス・キリストが私達のためにご自身の命という代価を支払ってくださった、その型を見るのです。最後に神の広い愛について見ましょう。
「神の広い愛」
このルツ記は「さばきづかさが世を治めているころ」（１章１節）という言葉によって始まります。すなわち、このルツ記に記されている出来事はさばきづかさが世を治めていた士師記の時代に起きたことなのです。そして、先週、お話ししましたように士師記の時代こそ、聖書中で最も諸悪がはびこった暗黒の時代なのです。そのような中でこのルツの出来事はあったということは驚きです。
私達がこれまで見てきましたヨシュア記においてはヨシュアをリーダーとしたイスラエルがカナンの地を征服して、当地に定住していったことをお話ししました。彼らがその土地を征服するにあたり、神様から受けた命令はそこに住んでいる者たちをことごとく滅ぼし尽くせというものでした。そのような激しい言葉を聞きますと、私達はなぜ、そんな無慈悲なことを神は命じられたのかと思いますが、神様がそう言わざるをえないほどに、カナンの先住民達は悪に染まっており、イスラエルの民も彼らと共存するのなら必ずその影響を受けて滅びてしまうということが明確であったためにそのような命令がなされたのだとこれまでお話ししてきました。
しかし、それでも私達は一つの思いをぬぐえません。その思いとは結局、神様はイスラエル民族だけをその配慮の中に入れており、他民族のことは何も考慮していないのではないかということです。しかし、もう既に皆さんも今日、お話ししたことから、このルツ記がその疑問に答えているということにお気づきではないかと思うのです。
ルツ記についていくつかの特徴をお話しします。ここに当時の時代背景を思います時におよそ考えられないことを私達は見いだします。まず、この書名がルツという女性の名前から来ているということです。当時の時代背景は女性がまだ男の所有物として取り扱われているような時代です。そのような時代に女性の名前がその書のタイトルとなっているのです。聖書中、女性の名前がその書名になっているのはこのルツ記とエステル記しかありません。エステルという女性はイスラエル人でありましたが、このルツはモアブ人であり、イスラエルから見れば「滅ぼし尽くす対象」となりかねない異教の民でした。
皆さん、そもそもモアブ人の起源をご存じですか。それは創世記１９章にまでさかのぼります。そこにはアブラハムの親戚であるロトに彼らの娘達が酒を飲ませ、酒に酔ったロトは自分の娘達と関係を結び、彼女たちが父の子を産んだというような吐き気をもようすようなことが記されています。「こうしてロトのふたりの娘たちは父によってはらんだ。姉娘は子を産み、その名をモアブと名づけた。これは今のモアブ人の先祖である」（創世記１９章３６節、３７節）。その時に生まれた子はモアブと名づけられ、その子がモアブ人の先祖となったのです。
また、まだイスラエルの民が荒野を放浪していた時の出来事として民数記はこのような出来事を記録しています「イスラエルはシッテムにとどまっていたが、民はモアブの娘たちと、みだらな事をし始めた。その娘達が神々に犠牲をささげる時に民を招くと、民は一緒にそれを食べ、娘たちの神々を拝んだ」(民数記２５章１節－２節)
モアブ人の始まりは近親相姦であり、そのモアブ人はイスラエルにとって災いとなりましたゆえでしょうか、申命記２３章３節などを見ますと「アンモン人とモアブ人とは主の会衆に加わってはならない。彼らの子孫は十代までも、いつまでも主の会衆に加わってはならない」とあり、彼らはイスラエル民族と共に存在できないような民族だったのです。ルツはその除外されるべきモアブ人だったというのですから驚きです。
このところに私達は神様の御心を見るのです。すなわち、確かに神様はイスラエル民族を選び、彼らをしてその歴史を導かれたのですが、その御目は確かに異教徒にも、しかも最悪と思われる者達にも向けられていたということです。皆さん、ルツ記が排他的と思われがちなヨシュア記、士師記の後に置かれていることには大切な意味があるのです。
それではなぜ、このモアブ人ルツは神様の恵みを受けたのでしょうか。ルツ記２章１２節にボアズがルツについてこのような言葉を言っています「どうぞ、イスラエルの神、主、すなわちあなたがその翼の下に身を寄せようとしてきた主からじゅうぶんの報いを得られるように」。この言葉から分かることは、たとえイスラエル民族ではない異邦人であっても、神の翼の下に身を寄せようという者に神様は保護と報いを与えてくださるお方なのだということです。このようなところを思います時に、神様が「滅ぼし尽くせ」と言われた者達がどんなに救いがたく堕落していたのか、その心がどんなに頑なであり、彼らが謙虚に神のもとに身を寄せることなどなかったのだということが想像できます。
このモアブ人ルツに与えられた報いは大きなものでした。彼女はボアズに贖われたのです。そのことにより、もちろん彼女は落穂拾いというような不安定な生活から免れたでしょう。それは大きな報いでありましょう。しかし、それ以上の報いというのはこのルツから生まれた子、オベデからエッサイが生まれ、エッサイからはダビデが生まれ、ひいてはその後にその家系からイエス・キリストはお生まれになったのです。今、私達はマタイによる福音書一章に記録されているイエス・キリストの系図の中にこのモアブ人ルツの名を見るのです。
皆さん、暗黒の士師記は「イスラエルには王がなかったので、おのおの自分の目に正しいと見ることをおこなった」（士師記２１章２５節）と記しその書を終えています。なんとも暗い、混沌に満ちた最後の言葉でしょうか。
しかし、その士師記に続くルツ記の最後は「（ルツの子）、オベデからエッサイが生まれ、エッサイからダビデが生まれた」（ルツ記４章２２節）という希望の言葉でその書を終えています。先に言いましたように、このルツ記の出来事は士師記の時代に属するのです。その暗黒の中に神様は後の世に続く希望を記しているのです。神様の愛はなんと私達に思いを越え、広く深いのでしょうか。
皆さん、これらの出来事はすべて「はからずも」と思われることから始まったことを心に刻みましょう。この「はからずも」が私達の人生にもあることを覚えましょう。その時を見過ごすことのないように主に近くありましょう。
もし、皆さんの中で自分がしてきたことは許し難いことで、神になど近寄ることができないと思われている方がいますのなら、最も神からかけ離れたボアズ人であるルツを贖い、祝福された神のみわざを思い起こしてください。そして、その神がイエス・キリストの十字架という代価を払ってくださり、私達の犯してきた罪も全て赦してくださるのだという真理を受け止めてください。
もしかしたら自分の出生や生い立ちで悩んでいる人がいるかもしれません、ナオミやルツが通った、震災や事故、別離によって悲しみの中にある方がいるかもしれません、どうぞ神様の翼の下に身を寄せて下さい。神はそのみ翼の中にあなたをかくまい、その人生を導いてくださることでしょう。お祈りしましょう。
Book of Ruth: As it turned out, God—-

On March 25, 2012; we, who have attend this Worship service, have lived our ownlife until today. It was different life for each one of us whether it was for a couple nor the parent and child. And we will keep living our life until God the father call on to us saying “ its enough, come to me.”
Similarly, two women, Ruth and Naomi, lived their own life 3,000 years ago. Even- though their lives were different then ours, today, I want to overlap our heart on to theirs.
When I was preparing this message, I felt deeply that we can share the same thought that they felt even though the time has elapsed. I want to talk about three things today; 1) Event that occurred unexpectedly, 2) what its means to buy, and 3) Gods great Love
Event that occurred unexpectedly:
Naomi lived in the town of Bethlehem where Jesus Christ was borne. ( For us Japanese, name Naomi is very familiar to us. This name exist amongst Jewish people and also we meet a people named Naomi amongst Americans, some time. I imagine most of these name, Naomi, were taken from Book of Ruth.) Naomi and her husband Elimelech and two sons went to live in the foreign country of Moab since there was a famine in the country where they lived. But her husband Elimelech died in the land of Moab. Her two sons married Moabite women, but also died short time later. The Bible does not
mention the reason why her husband and two sons died. All we know is how Naomi's heart was hurt. For parent, you will feel like your heart is torn apart with sorrow when you loose your children before you die.
Naomi has decided to return to her native land, Bethlehem, and asked her two young foreign daughter-in-laws to return to their mother's home and make a new home with new husband, since they still have a long life ahead of them. However, daughter-in-laws did not feel it was right things to
do. Eventually, one of the daughter-in-law returned to the mother's home, crying. Other daughter-in-law, Ruth, went with Naomi to her native land, Bethlehem, where it was a foreign to Ruth. For, Book of Ruth first begins with “famine”, follows whit “death of family member “ and “the parting”. How sad and gloomy this beginning is?
And when you hear about these things, we think this is how our life is about. We all run into natural disaster or accident that we never though about. As we experience often, we have to face the death of our love one in our life time. Some one said “ only good-by is the life”. It is not all together wrong.
People in the town found out right away that Naomi had returned to her native land, Bethlehem, after about 10 years. What people in the native land saw after many years was a Naomi with the foreign woman, Ruth together, without her husband and two sons.
Naomi said to women in the town, “don't call me Naomi (means pleasant )” “call me Mara (means bitter)”.
There was no guarantee for their livelihood for these two widows who returned to their native land. Naomi could not work because of her old age. Daughter-in-law, Ruth, went into the field and pick up the left over grains. Yes, as it is said here, by picking up the loose grain in the field, it became
their daily food. In the Bible, There was a law about picking up the grains.
Leviticus
chapter 19, verses 9 & 10; 9 “‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the LORD your God.
Deuteronomy
chapter 4, verses 18 thru 22;
18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this. 19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook
a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the foreigner,
the fatherless and the widow. 21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. 22

Through the Books of Joshua and Judges, we are learning about character of people of Israel, who have conquered the land of Canaan. But in these books of Laws, a compassion towards the migrants, orphans and widows were noted. Without welfare system and time when the weak were devoured by the strong, it was not possible to hear the words coming out of people to rescue the weak. But the God even had an eyes on those things and gave a Laws to the people of Israels. Because of these laws, Ruth and Naomi were able to sustain their livelihood by picking the grains.
However, it happened on the first day when Ruth came to the field to pick-up the grains.
That event is recorded on the Book of Ruth as thus: “So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek. ( Ruth chapter 2 verse 3)
Do you remember the name of Naomi's husband? Yes, it's Elimelech. Ruth came upon the field of Boaz, who was from clan of Elimelech and he was very wealthy man. ( Ruth chapter 2 verse 1) Boaz met Ruth on first day and took care of her by given her the water and foods. He also ordered his men to pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pickup. This encounter with Boaz greatly changed the lives of Ruth and Naomi later on.
Book of Ruth started the beginning of this encounter with “As it turned out”. Most of us will call it “accidentally or by chance”. But we see a Gods guidance behind this words “As it turned out”.
When we read the Book of Ruth and overlook the words “As it turned out”, then we will never know that events that took place in the Book of Ruth happened within the Gods hand.
Through this, we learned that we too can not overlook the words “as it turned out” in our daily living. We have to accept that existence of words “as it turned out”, that are there, are all in the hands of the God, if unforeseen changes occurred in our life such as loosing somethings unexpectedly, provided with something, go some where or send home unexpectedly. In the case of Ruth and Naomi, God started the new things for them from “As it turned out” from [the famine], [death of family members], [parting] and from Ruth going to Boaz's field.
This new things that we will look into next become absolutely indispensable for things that will occur later on. Lets look at second subject, that is “what its means to buy”.
What its means to buy:
In the Book of Ruth, word “gaal” appears nine times. Gaal is a Hebrew word that were used to write original bible. It means “AGANAU” in japanese or to redeem. This word had bearing on an important event that determined the life of Ruth.
We do not use this word “AGANAI” in our daily living to often. If you look this kanji word carefully, it include “KAI” word in it which means clam. As you know at ancient time, clams are used as a money.
Therefore, if kanji words include the “KAI” word, it associate with the money most of time. For,
word “AGANAU” means “buying thing by paying the price”. Then why do word “buying” appears so many times in the Book of Ruth. That is, it shows the relationship between Boaz and Ruth who have met by chance.
Let me explain some more. As I said before, Naomi and Boaz were related. At that time, there was a custom to remarry a member of husband's relative if a woman becomes a widow by death of her
husband. We are not accustom to this type of custom in Japan or America. But some scholars are saying today, that it was common occurrence in middle east country, Mongolia and Tibet. World eyes will be upon them with interest, if in the the case where the brother of deceased husband inherit that widows title and obligation
This custom is there to protect women from severity of living by herself as a widow and it was there also to reduce the number of widows, since many men lost their lives in the society where there
were many wars.
Yet, it is not easy thing to do to accept someone else's responsibility even though you are the relative. As it is noted in the Book of Ruth, many of them hesitated to accept the responsibility. But
Boaz accepted all the responsibilities, accomplished all the procedures, paid the price for Ruth and married her so that Elimelech's land and his name will not ceased from his native land.
When Ruth met Boaz met first time, she asked him against his generous heart , “How can you be so kind to me? You must know I am only foreigner” (Ruth 2; 10) Since we know what Jesus Christ have
accomplish for us, we think as Ruth did “ How can you died for me? You know I am a sinner”
At the time, Ruth and Boaz did not realized that, this happening, that occurred at corner of small village named Bethlehem, will become a something that will shake up the mankind. Yes, as it
turned out, by Boaz paying the price for Ruth to save her life and to live together, we see a shape taken place for later that Jesus Christ paid the price , that is his life for us. At last lets look at Gods great love.
Gods great love:
Book of Ruth begin with the words, “In the days when the judges ruled “ (Chapter 1 verse 1). That is, the story of Book of Ruth took place in time of Book of Judges where Judges ruled the society. As I said last week, the time of Judges was the must darkest age in the bible where all kinds of evil things thrived. It is surprising to find that event of Ruth took place in midst of that age.
In the Book of Joshua that we looked at before, I talk about Israelite, with Joshua as a leader, conquering the land of Canaan and settling there. In order to conquer the land, Israelite received the
command from the God to destroyed the people who lived there.If we hear such vicious words, we wonder why the God commend such merciless thing.
As I told you before, that people who lived in the Canaan were so tainted with evils that it was clear to God, that people of Israel also will be destroyed by their influence if they live together. That is why God commended it.
But one though is not clear in my mind. That though is, does God only cares about people of Israel and have no concern for the foreign people? But I think you already noticed that, by what I said today, the Book of Ruth already answered your concerns.
Let me say few more things regarding this book of Ruth. When we think about back ground of that time, we see somethings that we never though about. First, the title of this book is taken from girl named Ruth. At that time, woman was treated as man’s belongings. In time like that, woman's name became the title of a book. In the bible, only the Book of Ruth and the Book of sther uses woman's name as title. Esther was an Israelite and Ruth was an Moabite whose people were pagans and could have became an object of abuse by the Israelite.
Do you know the origin of Moabites. It go back as far as Genesis chapter 19. In there, It says that Lot ,who was relative of Abraham, got drunk and laid with his two daughters.
Both daughters had a son by their father. Genesis 19; 36 and 37 says, “so both of Lot's daughter became pregnant by their father. The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab;
he is the father of the Moabites of today.” A child that was borne at that time was named Moab and he became the an ancestor of Moabites.
The Book of Numbers Chapter 25,
verses 1 & 2 says about the event that happened when the people of Israel were wondering in the wilderness; “While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods.”
The beginning of Moabites were the inbreeding and Moabite became a curse for the Israelites. May be that is why Deuteronomy chapter 23 verse 3 is saying “No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their
descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, not even in the tenth generation.” Moabite could not existed with the people of Israel. However, it is surprise that Ruth, who was Moabite , was excluded.
We see a God's will in here. That is, for certain, God chose the people of Israel and led them through the history. But God's eyes were certainly on the pagans and with the evil peoples also. There is an important reason for putting the book of Ruth after an exclusive books of Joshua and Judges.
Then why did Ruth who was a moabite received the God's blessing. Boaz said about Ruth in Book of Ruth chapter 2 verse 12; “May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” It means from these words, we understand that
even though you were the foreigner, not people of Israel, God will still protect and reward you if you come to take refuge under the wings of the God. If you think about it, the people whom God said to “destroyed them all” were people who were so corrupted and can not be saved. We can imagine that their hearts were so obstinated that there was no chance of them to humbly take refuge in to the God.
The rewards that Ruth, the Moabite, received was a mighty one. She was redeemed by Boaz. Of course she has escaped from unstable life of picking grains from the field. It was a big reward. But reward that is greater then that was a son, Obed, that was born to Ruth. Obed was father of Jesse and Jesse was father of David. Later on, Jesus Christ was born from that family line. Now we see a
name of Ruth in a record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ in a Book of Matthew, chapter 1.
The Book of Judges ends with words; “In those days Israel had no king; Everyone did as saw fit.” (Judges chapter 21 verse 25) How full of dark and chaotic words they are.
But Book of Ruth that follows Book of Judges ends with hopeful words; “ (son of Ruth) Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.” (Ruth chapter 4 verse 22). As I said before, this event that took place in book of Ruth belongs in the time of book of Judges. In the midst of this
darken time, God is showing the hope that will follow in the later generations. How great and deep are the Gods love is for us.
Let it etched into our mind that all these events started from the “As it turned out.”
Lets remember also that this “As it turned out” exist in our life to. Let us be near to the God so we
will not let that chance go by us. In amongst you, if you think that you can not forgive what you have done and can not go near to the God, then remember the God's blessing on Ruth, who was a Moabite whom were more distanced from the God. And let us accept the truth that the God paid the price with Jesus Christ's cross and forgave our sins that we have committed.
May be some of you are troubled with your birth or with personal history. May be some of you are in the midst of sorrow due the earthquake disaster, accident or parted with some one, like Ruth and Naomi went through. Then please take a refuge under the wings of the God. The God will provide you
with the shelter in his wings and will guide your life.

３）ルツ記２章３節には「彼女(ルツ)は、はからずもエリメレクの一族であるボアズの畑の部分にきた」とあります。この「はからずも」は偶然を意味するのではなく、神様の摂理と導きを示すものです。あなたの生涯にはこれまでにどんな「はからずも」が、ありましたか。
４）ルツ記の鍵語はヘブル語で「ガアール」というところの「贖う」という言葉です（４章４節に５回、６節に３回、７節に１回）。ボアズはルツを買い取りました。このことは何の型となっていますか。
５）ルツがモアブ人であるということは何を意味していますか。創世記１９章３０節－３８節、民数記２５章１節－２節、申命記２３章３節を読む時に彼女がボアズに買い取られ、その妻となったことにはどんな意味がありますか。
６）これまでの礼拝メッセージにおいて、私達はイスラエルが異教徒の排斥に力を注いできた様をみてきました。それなのになぜ、ここで神様はモアブ人ルツを取り上げているのでしょうか。ルツとボアズからダビデの祖父となるオベデが生まれたということは何を意味していますか（マタイ１章１節を参照）。
