『地の上に空な事が行われている。すなわち、義人であって、悪人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。また、悪人であって、義人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。わたしは言った、これもまた空であると』（伝道の書８章１４節）。
私達にとって働きが正等に評価されて報われるということはとても嬉しいことです。諸悪から遠ざかり正直に生きている人には正当な報いがある世界を私達は望みます。反対に人の目を盗んでは手をぬき、なすべきことをせず、悪事によって不正をしている者が報われ、そこに相応しい処罰がない世界を私達は受け入れることができません。
私達の世界において、正直に生きている者達はいつも健やかであり、全てが円満で、経済も安定しているというのなら、私たちは納得します。そのことにより、それなら自分も正直に生きようと思うのです。
しかし、そういうことばかりではないということを私達は知っています。なんであんなに正直で優しい人がこんな目に遭うのだろうか、こんなことになるのだろうかということを私たちは見聞きすることがあるのです。反対に悪事をしている人が罰を受けないどころか、さらに栄えているというようなことがあるのです・・・。

不正の世に生きる処方箋

私達にとってそのはたらきが正等に評価されて報われるということはとても嬉しいことです。コツコツと日々まじめに生き、諸悪から遠ざかり正直に生きている人には正当な報いがある世界を私達は望みます。反対に人の目を盗んでは手をぬき、なすべきことをせず、悪事によって不正をしている者が報われ、そこに相応しい処罰がない世界を私達は受け入れることができません。
伝道の書を記しましたソロモンがその世界を眺めた時に、彼が見た世界は自ら納得できるようなものではありませんでした。
14地の上に空な事が行われている。すなわち、義人であって、悪人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。また、悪人であって、義人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。わたしは言った、これもまた空であると（伝道の書８章１４節）。
私達の世界において、正直に生きている者達はいつも健やかであり、全てが円満で、経済も安定しているというのなら、私たちは納得します。そのことにより、それなら自分も正直に生きようと思うのです。しかし、そういうことばかりではないということをソロモンはこの世界の至るところで見、その３０００年後に生きている私達も同じようなことを感じることがあります。なんであんなに正直で優しい人がこんな目に遭うのだろうか、こんなことになるのだろうかということを私たちは見聞きすることがあるのです。
反対に何であんな悪事をしている人が罰を受けないどころか、さらに栄えているというようなことがあるのです。このようなことは私達の回りで見られることです。
私達家族は、今はコロナにより、閉店してしまった某サラダバーのバフェによく行きました。皆さん、どこだかお分かりになりますでしょう。そこに行きますと、飲み物のオーダーがとられますが、私たちは大抵「水！」と答えます。そうしますと透明のコップをくれます。それに対してソフトドリンクをオーダーした人には当時、赤のコップが渡されました。彼らはその赤いコップで好きなだけコーラを飲むことができるのです。
しかし、そこでは時々、水用のコップにジュースを堂々と入れている人を見かけることがありました。水用のコップは透明ですから、それがコーラやフルーツパンチであるかは一目瞭然でわかるのです。
そんな人達を見ていますと、水を飲んでいることが、損していることのように思えてくるのです（正しいことをしているのですが）。こうなりますと、いつか彼らと同じように、水のコップでジュースを飲み始める人が出てくることでしょう。
そして、このようなことは水やジュースにとどまらなくなるのです。「水」や「ジュース」は、やがて別のものにエスカレートとしていくことでしょう。 はたして私達の世界は「ばれない者勝ち」の世界なのでしょうか。
ある方がアメリカの裁判における陪審員を皮肉って「陪審員とは、よい弁護士を選ぶ人達」と言いましたが、あながち否定できないように思えます。この国では一般的に「よい弁護士」とは「報酬が高い弁護士」を意味します。 公正な裁きが求められる裁判も、どれだけのお金を持っているかによって判決が決まってしまうことがあるということを否定できないのです。私達の周りにこのような不公平があります。
このような公義が全うされない、正当な評価というものがなされない現実に直面し、自分の仕事や生活の中で悩んでいる人、苦しんでいる人はけっこういるのではないでしょうか。
そして、この新しい一年もこのような状況に置かれるということがきっと私達には少なからずあることでしょう。もしかしたら、そのことに心を奪われてしまって、自分のエネルギーがそのようなことばかりに費やされていくような日々を送ってしまうかもしれません。不満が爆発して、とんでもないことをしでかしてしまうかもしれません。
そこで私達はこの新年、予め御言葉によって、このことに対して光を照らしておきましょう。この一年の間、これから開く御言葉が私達を守り、支えてくれることを心より願います。
今日、示されている聖書の箇所は詩篇３７篇です。この３７篇はソロモンが空しいと嘆いたこの世界の現実について、そのソロモンの父親であったダビデが記したものです。先週もソロモンの言葉を受け、その父ダビデの詩篇３４篇を引用しましたが、ソロモンはダビデが経験したことを自分も経験し、父ダビデの言葉に目が開かれ、また励まされたに違いありません。
ソロモンが世の不正、不義をつぶさに見、嘆いたように、父ダビデも自ら不義の中でどう生きるかを模索し、そこに光を見いだした人でした。詩篇３７篇１節から１１節を拝読します。
1悪をなす者のゆえに、心を悩ますな。不義を行う者のゆえに、ねたみを起すな。2彼らはやがて草のように衰え、青菜のようにしおれるからである。3主に信頼して善を行え。そうすればあなたはこの国に住んで、安きを得る。4主によって喜びをなせ。主はあなたの心の願いをかなえられる。5あなたの道を主にゆだねよ。主に信頼せよ、主はそれをなしとげ、6あなたの義を光のように明らかにし、あなたの正しいことを真昼のように明らかにされる。7主の前にもだし、耐え忍びて主を待ち望め。おのが道を歩んで栄える者のゆえに、悪いはかりごとを遂げる人のゆえに、心を悩ますな。8怒りをやめ、憤りを捨てよ。心を悩ますな、これはただ悪を行うに至るのみだ。9悪を行う者は断ち滅ぼされ、主を待ち望む者は国を継ぐからである。10悪しき者はただしばらくで、うせ去る。あなたは彼の所をつぶさに尋ねても彼はいない。11しかし柔和な者は国を継ぎ、豊かな繁栄をたのしむことができる。
この３７篇を書き記したダビデは今から３０００年前に生きた人です。彼の時代は今以上に不公平や不義というものがなされていたと想像できます。しかし、ダビデはそのような現実のただなかで、力強く言うのです「悪をなす者のゆえに、心を悩ますな。
ねたみを起こすな。彼らは放っておいても衰え、しおれる。そうではなくて、主によって喜べ、その道を主に委ねなさい。主に信頼しなさい。怒りをやめ、憤りを捨てなさい。怒ってしまったらあなたも彼らと同じ悪に陥る。神様は必ずその正しさを真昼のように明らかにするから耐え忍んで主を待ち望みなさい」先週、私は箴言４章２３節を引用しました。
「油断することなく、あなたの心を守れ、命の泉はこれから流れ出るからである」。
私達の周りにある様々な不義・不正はダイレクトに私達の心に入ってきます。しかし、それらが私達にどんな感情を引き起こさせるのか、そこに至るまで、それら自体はまだ私達の心を支配していません。
ですから、私達はそれらを見聞きするにつけ、そのことを主への信頼と喜びによって押し返すのです。そうすることにより私達の心を守るのです。そして、自分が成すべきことをし続けるのです。
私は特に詩篇３７篇３節の英語訳が心に留まりました。ここには私達がこれからもし続けるシンプルなことがあります。主に信頼して善を行え。この国に住み、あなたの誠実を耕せ。
この世が不公平でも、不正が見過ごされていても、日々、主への真実という畑を耕し続けよ。信仰に生きるということは不正や間違ったことに口を閉ざすということではありませんから、しかるべきことには声をあげるべきでしょう。
しかし、そのことだけに己が心を支配されてしまうことがないように、主に委ねるべきことは委ね、主が既にはたらいてくださっているということに信頼を置きましょう。あのガラテヤ人への手紙をおぼえましょう。
「まちがってはいけない。神は侮られるようなかたではない。人は自分のまいたものを刈り取ることになる」（ガラテヤ６章７節）。
私達はこの言葉を厳粛に受け止めなければなりません。
それでは私達はこれらのことを踏まえて、何を目指して日々を暮らせばいいのでしょうか。それはこの詩篇３７篇全体を見ていく時に明らかにされます。３節、９節、１１節、２２節、２９節、３４節を注意深く見てみましょう。
3主に信頼して善を行え。そうすればあなたはこの国に住んで、安きを得る。
9悪を行う者は断ち滅ぼされ、主を待ち望む者は国を継ぐからである。
11しかし柔和な者は国を継ぎ、豊かな繁栄をたのしむことができる。
22主に祝福された者は国を継ぎ、主にのろわれた者は断ち滅ぼされる。
29正しい者は国を継ぎ、とこしえにその中に住むことができる。
34主を待ち望め、その道を守れ。そうすれば、主はあなたを上げて、国を継がせられる。あなたは悪しき者の断ち滅ぼされるのを見るであろう。
ダビデは心のうちに葛藤があったのでしょう。まさしく、その不正、不公平に怒りを感じたこともあったでしょう。義憤に燃えたこともあるでしょう。しかし、ある時、神様によって気がつかされたのです。あなたはこの世の不正に対して一喜一憂するために生きているのではない。
あなたがそのことに気がついているように、私の前にもそれら全ては明らかになっており、私は全てを知り尽くしている。それらについて私は放っておかない。だから、あなたは私の領分に踏み込んで思い悩むよりも、あなたがまずなすべきことに集中しなさい。
そうだ、あなたが本来、なすべきこと、目指すべきことは「国を継ぐ」ことなのだ。国を継ぐということはどういうことでしょうか。二つあります。一つは文字通り、私達が生きているこの世界を継ぐということです。
「伝道の書」についてお話した時に、この書には「日の下」という言葉が何度も出てくると申し上げました。 そして、ソロモンは、私達が生きているこの日の下、すなわち太陽の下は諸々の空しさで満ちているのだといいました。
しかし、その空しさで満ちた日の下で私達はその国を継ぐために、この地に生かされているのだということです。私達は人間が歩んできた過去の道のりというものを歴史として眺めることができます。
その歴史は人間の諸悪と人間の善意と良心が混在して、今日にいたっています。
そして、そのような中でこの世界が今日あるのは、悪に屈せずに良心をもって生きてきた無名の人達のその歩みによるのです。 彼らこそが今日から明日にこの国を継いできた者達なのです。
そのようなことは「ほら、ここにも、そこにもその証拠がある」とか「あそこにもそんな人がいる」というように明らかにされるようなことではありません。 しかしながら、確かに今日の世界が保たれ、次の時代へと世界が継がれてきたのは、このような無名の人間の存在があるからなのです。それこそが私達が神様から託されている私達の目指すところです。
そして、同時にこの国を継ぐということは「神の国」を継ぐということをも意味しています。エペソ１章１３節から１４節にも記されているとおりです。
13あなたがたもまた、キリストにあって、真理の言葉、すなわち、あなたがたの救の福音を聞き、また、彼を信じた結果、約束された聖霊の証印をおされたのである。14この聖霊は、わたしたちが神の国をつぐことの保証であって、やがて神につける者が全くあがなわれ、神の栄光をほめたたえるに至るためである。
この箇所を日本語聖書は「神の国を継ぐ」と書いており、まさしくその通りでありましょう。 私達はこの地上の国を継ぐものであると同時に神の国の世継ぎなのです。その保証として私達は聖霊の証印をおされているのです。
いや、そんなこと初めて聞いたという方もいるかもしれませんが、実に私達にはこのような驚くべきことが託されているのです。 私達はこの地に生きながら、この地を継ぐために、また神の国を継ぐために生かされているのです。
この崇高な使命を忘れて目の前で起きている事に心奪われて、取り乱すことがないように、私達はしかとこのことを自覚して日々、胸をはって生きようではありませんか。
私達は今月、合衆国にとって偉大な一人の人間の記念日を迎えました。マーティン・ルーサー・キング牧師です。あらためて彼の説教を聴きました。キング牧師といえば、あの有名な「私には夢がある」という説教です。
しかし、同時にこの度、私の心をとらえた説教は、師が１９６８年４月３日、すなわち暗殺される前の晩にメンフィスで話した「I’ve Been to the Mountain Top」という説教でした。 その説教は翌日にどんなことが起きるのかをあたかも師は知っていたかのようにこのような言葉で終っています。
私は今、何が起きようとしているか知りません。分かることはこれから先にも困難が待ち受けているということです。しかし今やそれは私にとって大きな問題ではありません。なぜなら私は山の頂きに登ってきたのですから。私は心配しません。もちろん私も他の人達のように、長く生きたいと思います。でも今やそのことも心配していません。ただ私は神様の御心に従いたいのです。
神様は私に山の頂に登ることを許してくださいました。そして、そこから私はあたりを見回したのです。そして、そこから約束の地を見ました。そこに私は皆さんと共に入ることはできないかもしれません。しかし、今晩、皆さんにぜひとも知っていただきたいことは、やがて私達がその約束の地に入るということです。だから私は今晩、さいわいです。 私は何事をも心配しません。私はどんな人間をも恐れません。私の目は主がこられるその栄光を見ているのですから。
キング牧師が貫いた信念は劣悪な人種差別に対して非暴力で応えるということでした。すなわち悪に対して善で応えるということです。 それは弱々しいものではなく、揺るぎない強い力を内に秘めた運動でした。
まさしく、それは詩篇３７篇に記されているように悪をさけて善を行うことによって成し遂げられた勝利でした。今日、私達は誰しもがこのキング牧師はこの合衆国が二分してしまうような危機を救い、この「国を継いだ」最も偉大な人の一人であったということを知っています。
しかし、それだけではありません、そのキング牧師は地上最後の晩、「もう一つの国」を見ていました。そのところで、神は彼に約束してくださっているもう一つの御国、約束の地、すなわち神の国を彼に示し、その国をも継ぐのだということを知らせたのです。実にキング牧師の生涯は見事にこの二つの国を意識し、この地上では寄留者のようにして、自らなすべき使命に没頭し、その生涯を全うしたのです。
皆さん、この新しい一年、私達は様々なことを見聞きすることでしょう。 まさしく、ちらちらと目の前に起きている不正、正直者が馬鹿を見るかもしれません。
それが人事ではなく、まさしく自分に降りかかって来るというようなことも経験するかもしれません。その時に今日、開かれました聖書の言葉を思い起こしましょう。
主はわれらと共におられます。私達は自らが何をすべきかを知っています。やがて全てのことは明らかにされることでしょう。 私達は現在、この地を継ぐために、そしてやがて神の国を継ぐために今を生きているのです。それこそが本来、私達が目指すところなのです。
最後にこのことを目指す私達の拠り所となる詩篇一篇を読んでこのメッセージを終えましょう。
1悪しき者のはかりごとに歩まず、罪びとの道に立たず、あざける者の座にすわらぬ人はさいわいである。2このような人は主のおきてをよろこび、昼も夜もそのおきてを思う。3このような人は流れのほとりに植えられた木の時が来ると実を結び、その葉もしぼまないように、そのなすところは皆栄える。4悪しき者はそうでない、風の吹き去るもみがらのようだ。5それゆえ、悪しき者はさばきに耐えない。罪びとは正しい者のつどいに立つことができない。6主は正しい者の道を知られる。しかし、悪しき者の道は滅びる。
お祈りしましょう。
A prescription for living in a world of injustice

It is a great joy for us to know when our work is valued and rewarded accordingly. We want to live in a world where people who live honestly, diligently and avoid evil practices can receive a fair reward.
On the contrary, we cannot accept a world in which those who steal from others, cut corners, and cheat by doing evil are rewarded and not punished accordingly.
According to Solomon, the author of the book of Ecclesiastes, the world around him did not seem fair and reasonable.
14 There is futility which is done on the earth, that is, there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked. On the other hand, there are evil men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I say that this too is futility. (Ecclesiastes 8:14 NASB 1995).
It would make sense to us if those who live honestly are always healthy, have everything in order, and have financial stability. That would make us want to live honestly. However, Solomon saw that that was not the case. Those of us living 3000 years after Solomon’s time may feel the same way.
We see and hear things like, “Why would such an honest and kind person get into such trouble? On the contrary, we sometimes wonder why people who do bad things are not punished, but instead continue to flourish. This is something that we see around us.
My family used to go to a salad bar buffet restaurant that is now closed due to Corona. I’m sure you can guess which restaurant I am talking about. At that restaurant, we were always asked what we wanted to order for drinks. We usually said, “Water!” and got some clear cups.
On the other hand, those who ordered soft drinks were given a red cup. They could drink as much coke as they wanted with that red cup. However, we sometimes saw people there who were proudly pouring juice into the clear water cups.
Because the cups are clear, it is easy to see if it is holding coke or fruit punch. Although in our hearts, we knew that we were doing the right thing by drinking water, watching people pour other drinks into the clear cups made us feel like we were actually missing out.
If we give in to this way of thinking and actions, more people will start drinking juice from the water cup. And this will not be limited to water and juice. The “water” and “juice” will escalate into something else.
Do we live in a world where cheating is accepted in order to win as long as you are not caught?
Someone once ironically said this about American jurors that “Jurors are the people who know how to pick good lawyers.” In this country, “a good lawyer” generally means “a lawyer with high remuneration.”
It cannot be denied that even in court, where fair judgment is assumed, the verdict may be determined by how much money one has. Such is the unfairness of this world.
I am sure that there are many people who are struggling and suffering from feeling that justice is not served and fair evaluation is not given in their work and life. And we are sure there will be more than a few times during this new year that we will face such situations.
We may become so consumed by them that we will spend all of our energy on those matters. You might get so frustrated that you end up doing something terrible.
Therefore, I would like us to shed light onto God’s Word on this matter before the matter becomes out of control. I sincerely hope that the Word of God that we are about to receive will protect and support our hearts and minds us during this year.
The Bible verse shown today is Psalm 37. This Psalm is written by David, Solomon’s father, about the reality of this world that Solomon lamented as empty.
Last week, I quoted Psalm 34 from Solomon’s father David. Solomon must have experienced what David experienced, and his eyes must have been opened and encouraged by his father David’s words.
Just as Solomon saw and lamented the injustice and iniquity of the world, his father David was a man who searched for a way to live in the midst of injustice and found light in it. Let’s read Psalm 37:1-11.
37 Do not fret because of evildoers, Be not envious toward wrongdoers. 2 For they will wither quickly like the grass and fade like the green herb. 3 Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.4 Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it. 6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light you’re your judgment as the noonday. 7Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.8 Cease from anger and forsake wrath; Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing. 9 For evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.10 Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there.11 But the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in abundant prosperity. (Psalm 37:1-11 NASB 1995)
David, who wrote these 37 Psalms, lived 3000 years ago. In his day, we can imagine that injustice and inequity were more prevalent than they are today.
But in the midst of this reality, David says emphatically, “Do not fret because of evildoers”. Do not envy them, for they will wilt and fade away if they are left alone. Rather, rejoice in the Lord, and commit your way to Him. Trust in the Lord. Cease from anger and forsake wrath. If you get angry, you will fall into the same path as the evildoers. For God will surely reveal his righteousness like daylight, so be patient and wait for the Lord.
I quoted Proverbs 4:23 last week,
“Guard your heart, and do not be careless, for the fountain of life will flow from it”.
The iniquity and injustice that surrounds us can pierce our hearts directly. However, those things cannot take over emotions unless we allow them to do so.
Therefore, when we see and hear them, we can push them back by choosing to trust and rejoice in the Lord. By doing so, we can protect our hearts. Then, we will continue to do what we need to be doing. “Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness”
Here, you can find some simple instructions to follow. Trust in the Lord and do good. Dwell in this land and cultivate your faithfulness.
Even though the world is unfair and injustices are overlooked, the author calls to continue to cultivate our field of truth to the Lord, day by day. Living by faith does not mean to remain silent to injustice and wrong doings. We should speak up at the right timing.
However, we should not let our minds be dominated by those things, but we need to surrender the matter to the Lord and trust that He is already working.
Remember the letter to the Galatians: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap (Galatians 6:7). We must solemnly accept these words.
Now that we know these things, what should we aim for in our daily lives? It is clear when we look at Psalm 37 as a whole. Let’s look carefully at verses 3, 9, 11, 22, 29, and 34.
3 Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
9 For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.
11But the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
22 For those blessed by Him will inherit the land, But those cursed by Him will be cut off.
29 The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.
34 Wait for the Lord and keep His way, And He will exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
David must have been conflicted in his heart. He must have been angry at the injustice and unfairness of the situation. He may have had times when he was burning with righteous indignation.
But then one day, God made him realize something. He does not live to be happy nor sad about the injustices of this world. As you are aware of them, they have all been revealed to me, and I know all about them. I will not leave them alone. So instead of worrying about stepping into my realm, focus on what you should be doing first.
Yes, what you should be doing, what you should be aiming for, is to “inherit the land”. What does it mean to “inherit the land”? There are two things. One is to literally inherit the world in which we live.
When I first talked about the book of Ecclesiastes, I mentioned that the word “under the sun” is mentioned many times. And Solomon said that under the sun, where we live, is full of emptiness. But the point is that we are alive under the sun on this land filled with emptiness to inherit the Kingdom.
We can look at the past paths of human beings through the lens of history. The history is a mixture of human evil, goodness and conscience. The pattern continues to this day.
The reason this world exists today is because of the efforts of unrecognized people who have lived with a conscience and not succumbed to evil. They are the ones who have inherited this land from today to tomorrow.
They are not easily revealed in ways people can say, “Look, there is evidence of that here and there,” or “There are people like that over there. However, it is indeed because of the existence of these unknown people that the world as we know it today has been preserved and passed on to the next generation.
That is what God has entrusted us with, and that is what we are aiming for. And “Inheriting the kingdom” also means inheriting the “kingdom of God. This is what Ephesians 1:13-14 says.
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:13-14 NASB1995).
The Japanese Bible refers to this verse as “inheriting the kingdom of God,” and that is exactly what it means. We are the inheritors of the Kingdom of God as well as the inheritors of this land. As a guarantee of this, we have the seal of the Holy Spirit on us.
Some of you may say that this is the first time you have heard of such a thing, but indeed, we have been entrusted with such an amazing thing. We are given life to inherit this land and to inherit the Kingdom of God.
Let us not forget this noble mission and not become distracted by what is happening in front of us. Let us be aware of this and live each day boldly.
This month we celebrate the anniversary of one of the greatest men to ever live in the United States. Martin Luther King, Jr. I recently got to listen to his sermon again.Rev. King is known for his famous sermon, “I Have a Dream.
But the sermon that captured my heart this time was the one he gave in Memphis on April 3, 1968, the night before he was assassinated. “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top”. The sermon ended with these words, as if he knew what was going to happen the next day.
I don’t know what will happen. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will.
And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land! And so I’m happy, tonight.
I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!!
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a non-violent response to racism. In other words, to respond to evil with good.
It was not a feeble movement、 but a movement with a strong and unshakable power within. He achieved victory by avoiding evil and doing good, as described in Psalm 37.
Today we all know that Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the greatest men to have “inherited” this land, saving the country from a crisis that would have split it in two. But that’s not all, on his last night on earth, his eyes were set on “another land”.
From there, God showed him the other kingdom that He had promised to him, the Promised Land, the Kingdom of God, and let him know that he would inherit that kingdom as well.
In fact, Rev. King’s life was a life of awareness of these two lands, and he lived it out as a pilgrim on earth who was fully committed to his mission.
Dear brothers and sisters, we will be seeing and hearing many things during this year.
You may experience injustice happening right in front of your eyes here and there. You may feel that honesty doesn’t pay. You may even personally experience these injustices rather than simply reading or hearing about them.
At those times, let’s remember the words of the Bible that we heard today.The Lord is with us. We know what we have to do. In His time, all things will be revealed to us.
We are living now to inherit this land and eventually the Kingdom of God. That should be our ultimate aim in life.
Let’s conclude this message by reading Psalm 1, which is a stronghold for us in living out this aim.
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.4 The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish.
