『主の使は主をおそれる者のまわりに陣をしいて彼らを助けられる。主の恵みふかきことを味わい知れ、主に寄り頼む人はさいわいである』（詩篇３４篇７節、８節）
数週間前、私は庭に生えている木から落ちた葉を手で拾い集め、バケツに入れていました。地にひざまずき一心に葉を拾っている私の後ろ姿を見て、妻は笑ったそうです。なぜなら私の背後では、私が拾い集める以上の葉がヒラヒラと落ちていたからです。
そのことを後で聞いて教えられました。和達が日々していることはすべからず、そのようなことなのではないかと。自らを守るとか、家族を守ると考えてみても、それには限界がある。いいえ、それは節穴だらけ。そもそも聖書は自分やその家族、その生活は自分で全て守れとは言っていません。聖書が言う、私達が守るべきことは一つ、私達の心なのです。
『油断することなく、あなたの心を守れ、命の泉はこれから流れ出るからである』（箴言４章２３節）。

主を畏れる者に約束されていること

先週、私は「ブレーキの効かない車に乗りますか」というタイトルで、私達が主を畏れることなしに知識や知恵を得ていくのなら、それはブレーキの効かない人生を送るようなものなのだとお話ししました。
イスラエルの三代目の王、ソロモンは箴言の冒頭で『主をおそれることは知識のはじめである』（箴言１章７節）と言い、伝道の書の最後に『事の帰する所は、すべて言われた。すなわち、神を恐れ、その命令を守れ。これはすべての人の本分である』 （伝道の書１２章１３節）と書き残しました。
ソロモンにとって、神を畏れて生きるということは、全てのことの前提であり、彼の人生の結論であったということがここから分かります。そのソロモンは箴言１４章２６節から２７節においても、こう記しています。
「主を畏れることによって人は安心を得、その子らは逃れ場を得る。主を畏れることは命の泉である、人を死のわなから逃れさせる」（箴言１４章２６節、２７節）。
「主を畏れる」ことにより、これらから生じる私達の人生の諸々の問題から免れる、守られると先週、お話ししました。 それは、ここに記されているように「逃れ場」を得ることであり、私達を「死の罠」から逃れさせるということです。
「逃れ場」を必要とするような環境とは何でしょうか。「死の罠」とは何でしょうか。それは私達が日常的に生きている場所のことであり、そのところに仕掛けられた、時に私達の霊肉を死に追いやるような罠です。
時にそこでは一言のつぶやきという小さな火が、大きな森を燃やすことがあり、このことゆえにこのことは「死の罠」と呼ばれます。「死なんて大袈裟な！」と思われるかもしれません。しかし、私達が日々、見聞きしていることを鑑みる時に、それは大袈裟なことと思われないのですが、皆さんはどう思いますか。
主を畏れることは、これらのことから私達を守ってくれると先週はお話ししました。そして、今日、お話ししたいことは、主を畏れることは私達に神の祝福をもたらすということなのです。
この箴言１４章には神を畏れることにより「人は安心を得る」（２６）と書かれています。英語の聖書では「Strong Confidence」、強い確信と書かれています。
私達は誰しも心に何かしらの不安を感じながら生きています。不安とは私達の揺れ動く心を表しています。しかし、私達が神を畏れる時に、私達は内なる確信に導かれ、そのことゆえに、私達は心に安心を得ます。
この確信とは何でしょうか。それは私達が神を畏れる時に、私達はそのこと以外については、過剰に恐れる必要はないという確信です。
日本でかつてヤクザとして生きていた牧師が、その世界では強がりとはったりこそが全てで、自分もそのように生きていたけれど、正直、いつも恐れが心にあったと話していました。
その方は自ら犯した犯罪により、刑務所に収監されても、そこにいる反対組織の者に命が狙われている恐怖でいつも眠れなかったというのです。しかし、ある時、刑務所にありました聖書を読んでいましたらある言葉に目が止まりました。マタイ１０章２８節
また、からだを殺しても、魂を殺すことのできない者どもを恐れるな。むしろ、からだも魂も地獄で滅ぼす力のあるかたを恐れなさい。2
この言葉を読んだ瞬間、彼の心の奥底から言葉では説明のできない平安が湧き上がってきて、その夜から、ぐっすりと眠れるようになったというのです。なぜ彼の心にこのような変化が生まれたのでしょうか。彼は本来、畏れるべきお方の存在を知ったからです。そう、畏れるべきお方を知るときに、私達が常日頃、恐れているものから開放されます。
しばしば、私達の人生は恐れに支配されます。恐れにコントロールされるのです。この思いはいつも心のどこかにあり、常態化されているので、私達はその存在を意識していませんが、私達の思いは、この恐れという足かせから解かれていません。
明日はどんな日になるのだろう。私や家族の健康は保たれるのだろうか。これからの生活はどうなるのだろうか。自分の地位は失われるのではなかろうか。自分が死んだらどうなるのだろう。
そして、たとえこれらのことを解決しても、それでも、私達の心には恐れがあります。なぜなら、今度はそれを失いやしないかという恐れが私達の心に去来するからです。
聖書が記録するクリスマスの出来事には何度も御使いの「恐れるな」という言葉が繰り返されます。神の子が生まれるという喜びの時にも、恐れと不安が人の心を支配していたのです。
イエス・キリストが人の顔を見る度に、よく言われた言葉は「恐れるな」という言葉でした。神の子が私達を見る時に、おそらく私達の心に恐れを見出すのでしょう。
私達は思います。自分は人にどう思われているのだろうか。あの人に何を言われるだろうか。あの人はどんな態度を示すのだろうか。想像してみてください。このような恐れを抱く人は多いのです。この恐れは時に私達が思い描いていた生き方を放棄させ、私達の感じている思いを押し殺させるのです。
ソロモンの父であったダビデは神を畏れる時に与えられる、神の守り、祝福を余すところなく詩篇３４篇に書き記しました。この詩の冒頭にはこう記されています「ダビデがアビメレクの前で狂ったさまを装い、追われて出ていったときの歌」。
ダビデはかつて敵の王の前に連れだされたことがありました。その時、彼は命が奪われる絶体絶命の危機の中にありました。その時、彼がとっさにとった行動は狂った人間をよそおうことでした。アビメレクの殺意の前から逃れるためです。そこから逃れていった時に歌ったのがこの詩篇３４篇なのです。
7主の使は主をおそれる者のまわりに陣をしいて彼らを助けられる。8主の恵みふかきことを味わい知れ、主に寄り頼む人はさいわいである。9主の聖徒よ、主をおそれよ、主をおそれる者には乏しいことがないからである。10若きししは乏しくなって飢えることがある。しかし主を求める者は良き物に欠けることはない。11子らよ、来てわたしに聞け、わたしは主をおそるべきことをあなたがたに教えよう。12さいわいを見ようとして、いのちを慕い、ながらえることを好む人はだれか。13あなたの舌をおさえて悪を言わせず、あなたのくちびるをおさえて偽りを言わすな。14悪を離れて善をおこない、やわらぎを求めて、これを努めよ。15主の目は正しい人をかえりみ、その耳は彼らの叫びに傾く。16主のみ顔は悪を行う者にむかい、その記憶を地から断ち滅ぼされる。17正しい者が助けを叫び求めるとき、主は聞いて、彼らをそのすべての悩みから助け出される。18主は心の砕けた者に近く、たましいの悔いくずおれた者を救われる。
彼は自らの命の危機に際して、その原因となっている敵を恐れよとか、アビメレクを恐れよということは一言も書いていません。彼はその危機の中で一貫して「神をおそれよ」と言っているのです。
このダビデの生き様は私達が神を畏れる時に、私達が持ちうる諸々の恐れから解放されていくということを示しています。ソロモンはその父、ダビデのこの背中から「主をおそれる」ということ、そしてそのことにより導かれる結末を目撃し、そのインスピレーションを得ていたのかもしれません。

主は主を畏れる者の周りに陣をしいて私達を助けてくれます。この「陣をしいて」というのは軍隊用語です。あたかも援軍が必要と思われるところに軍の長が軍隊を送るように、神は御使いに私達を守るように指示をし、陣をしいてくださる。
その守るべき対象は誰なのか。その対象は「主を畏れる者」なのです。この戦いは目には見えないことが多分に含まれるゆえに私達には観察し得ないことが多々あります。
私達は戦いの只中にいる、そしてそこで守られていたということすら気がつかないことがあります。しかし、私達が霊的な洞察力を持って、これらのことを振り返るのなら、あの時も、この時も神は私達を守ってくださっていたのだ、主の軍勢が陣を敷いて私達を取り囲んでいてくれたのだということに気がつかされるのです。
ダビデはその主の恵み深いことを味わい知れというのです。何度もそのことを思い起こし、神を畏れ、主に寄り頼むことの幸いを噛み締めよというのです。
そして、言うのです。「主を畏れる者には乏しいことがない」と。獲物を捕らえる体力がみなぎっている若い獅子ですら飢えることがある。私達もどんなに自らの力に信頼を置いていても飢える時は飢える。しかし、主を畏れる者には乏しいことがない。
２０２２年、私達が日々の暮らしを立てていくことは簡単なことではありません。私達はそのために苦労して働き、汗を流すことが求められるでしょう。しかし、そんな私達の最終的な寄りどころは何ですか。
自分のこれまでの人生で得た知恵や経験でしょうか。確かにそれは私達を助けてくれることでしょう。しかし、既にお話ししたように、それらが用いられるためにはまず神を畏れることを知らなければなりません。そして、私達が神を畏れて生きていくのなら、私達に乏しいことはないと聖書は約束するのです。
私の家の庭には一本の大きな木が生えています。春には新芽が出て、夏の間は無数の葉でこの木は包まれます。しかし、秋となり、冬となりますとその葉は一枚も残らずに地に落ちます。

その心が神を畏れるようにと、それを守るのなら、神はあなたを守るというのが聖書が私達に語りかけていることなのです。祝福のうちに生きていきたいと誰もが願い、頑張って祝福を自分で掴み取ろうとします。
現代社会は、それらは他者から勝ち取るものなのだと私達に語りかけてきますゆえに、私達は負けじと、さらにがむしゃらに頑張ります。しかし聖書は自分で祝福を掴み取れとも、勝ち取れとも書いていません。祝福は神から注がれるものなのです。神を畏れる者を主は祝福してくださると言うのが聖書の約束です。

皆さん、この言葉は社交辞令ですか。クリスチャンの間で取り交わされる建前ですか。 もし、私達がそのようにこの言葉を受け止めるのなら、私達は私達に聖書が約束している価値あるベニフィットを全て見過ごすでしょう。
それは春が来ても、夏が来ても、そのまま封が開けられずに捨て置かれているクリスマスプレゼントのようなものです。 その中に今の私達が、これからの私達が最も必要なものが入っているのに、私達はそれらに目も暮れずに、あくせくと動き回るのです。
先日、朝、コリント第二の手紙の言葉が心に留まり、大いに励まされ、それをノートに書き記しました。
『神はあなたがたにあらゆる恵みを豊かに与え、あなたがたを常にすべてのことに満ち足らせ、すべての良いわざに富ませる力のあるかたなのである』（Ⅱコリント９章８節）
私ができることは有限。しかし、私が信じ、畏れている神はあらゆる恵みを豊かに与えてくださるお方、常に全てのことに満ち足らせて、全ての良い技に富ませる力のある方なのだ。.
御言葉の備えをしている時にいつも思わされることがあります。それはこのようなことが、私達の人生に与える影響の大きさです。
この主の約束の言葉を信じ、ここに書かれているように神を畏れて生きていこうという決心をする、そして、そのことをし続けていくのかどうか、それが私達の人生に大きな影響を与えると言うことです。おそらくかつてこの地上に生きた多くの人達は、この神様のオファーを事前に知らされていながら、それを受け止めることなく人生を終えたのだろうなと思うのです。
先日、私は斉藤孝さんという大学教授の言葉を引用しました。『普通の５５歳の男性を好きな人なんて一人もいないと自覚していたほうが間違いありません』（『５５歳からの時間管理術』NHK出版新書）
中年の男にとりまして、心躍るような言葉ではありません。しかし、そんな男達にも王道と呼ばれる生きる道があります。それはそれまでの人生で与えられた知恵と経験、それに加えて神を畏れる心と共に生きるということです。
もし、家庭があるのなら、その思いを持ってその旅路の先頭に立つ。この世の中で神を畏れ、そして自分のできる最善を持ってこの社会に貢献する。このように神を畏れて生きていくのなら、私達の生涯は枯渇することがないでしょう。ソロモンは言っているではありませんか。
『主を畏れることは命の泉である』（箴言１４章２６節）
このことは言うまでもなく世の男性のみならず、全ての人に約束されているのです。もし、私達がこのことを心に据えてこの年を始めていくのなら、そして、このことがその生涯に継続されていくのなら、神が湧き上がらせてくださる命の泉の水に生涯、あずかることができるのです。
諸々のことを恐れ、自分の手でかき集め、自分の手で自らを守ろうとすること、そのことと、神を畏れ、天の扉が開かれ注がれる神の恵みを受け、その天から差し出される神の力強い御手によって守られる。私達はどちらを選ぶのでしょうか。
私達一同、漏れなく、この神様からの直々のオファーをいただくことができますように。お祈りしましょう。
The promise for those who fear the Lord.

Last week, my sermon was titled “Would you drive a car with ineffective brakes?” I talked about how life with the aim of gaining knowledge and wisdom without the fear of the Lord is like driving a car with no brakes.
Solomon, the third king of Israel, starts the book of Proverbs by saying, ” The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7 NASB 1995). At the end of the book of Ecclesiastes, he wrote, “All things have been said, and all things have come to pass. That is, fear God and obey his commands. (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
For Solomon, fear of God was not only the prerequisite for all things in life, but what he concluded as his biggest life lesson. Solomon also writes in Proverbs 14:26-27,
26 In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And his children will have refuge.
27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, That one may avoid the snares of death. (Proverbs 14:26,27 NASB 1995)
Last week, I spoke that by fearing the Lord, we can be spared and protected from many impending problems in our lives. This means that fearing the Lord provides us with a refuge where we can escape from the “snares of death.”
When do we need a place of refuge? What kind of death traps are we living among? We need to find a place of refuge in the midst of our daily lives. The traps in our lives can sometimes lead us to our physical and spiritual death.
Sometimes, even a small fire of a single word can end up burning a large forest. This is the power of the “death trap”. You may think, “What a gross exaggeration to say that a word can be a death trap! ” But when we look at what we see and hear around us every day, I don’t think it is an exaggeration.
Last week I spoke about how the fear of the Lord protects us from these dangers. And what I want to talk about today is that the fear of the Lord brings us God’s blessings.
Proverbs 14:26 in the Japanese Bible can be translated as “the fear of God gives peace to men.” In the English Bible, the word used in place of “peace” is “strong confidence”.
We all live with some degree of anxiety, which is a wavering state of our hearts. However, when we fear God, we are guided by an inner conviction, which can help us find peace in our hearts.
What is this conviction? It is the conviction that comes from fearing God, that we do not need to be overly afraid of anything.
A former yakuza (gangstar) who became a pastor in Japan once spoke about how in the world of yakuza, power and bluff were all that mattered. He certainly used to live his life that way. But to be honest, fear was always in his heart.
Even when he was in prison for his crimes, he could not sleep because of the fear that members of the rival gang in the same prison might try to kill him. However, while reading the Bible in the prison one day, he came across a passage that caught his attention. Matthew 10:28
28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew10:28 NASB 1995)
The moment he read these words, an inexplicable peace welled up from deep within his heart, and from that night on, he was able to sleep soundly. Why did such a change take place in his heart? Because he came to know Who it is that he needed to fear.
When we come to realize Who it is that we should fear, we are freed from all other fears. Often, our lives are controlled by fear. We are being controlled by our fears.
We are constantly in fear. Fear becomes normalized in our lives that we are not even aware of its presence. Our thoughts are bound by the shackles of fear.
We worry about what tomorrow will bring. Will my family and I be able to stay healthy? What will our lives be like from now on? Will I end up losing my position? What will happen to me when I die?
Even if we have resolved these questions, there is still fear in our hearts, because the fear of losing those things starts to appear in our minds.
In the Bible’s account of the events surrounding Christmas, the angels repeat the phrase “Do not be afraid” many times. Even at the joyous time of the birth of the Son of God, fear and anxiety dominated the hearts of the people.
“Do not be afraid” is also one of the commands that Jesus repeatedly gave to the people. When the Son of God looks at us, He probably sees fear in our hearts.
We worry about “What will people think of me?” and “What will that person say about me?” What kind of attitude will that person have? Just imagine that. There are many people who have this kind of fear.
Sometimes this fear causes us to abandon the way we envisioned our lives to be, and stifles our emotions.
David, Solomon’s father, wrote a full account of God’s protection and blessings that come when from fearing Him in Psalm 34. In the beginning of this psalm, he states, “ A Psalm of David when he feigned madness before Abimelech, who drove him away and he departed.
David was once brought before the king of his enemies. This happened when he was in desperate danger of losing his life. David’s immediate reaction was to pretend to be a crazy person. He was trying to get away from Abimelech’s murderous intent. This is what he sang as he fled from there in Psalm 34.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them. 8 O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!9 O fear the Lord, you His saints; For to those who fear Him there is no want.
10 The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; But they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing.11 Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.12 Who is the man who desires life And loves length of days that he may see good?13 Keep your tongue from evil And your lips from speaking deceit.14 Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous And His ears are open to their cry.16 The face of the Lord is against evildoers, To cut off the memory of them from the earth.17 The righteous cry, and the Lord hears And delivers them out of all their troubles.18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
At the moment of crisis in his own life, David never said that he should fear his enemies or Abimelech who are the cause of the crisis. David insisted on “Fearing God” in the midst of that crisis.
This life of David shows us that when we fear God, we are freed from all kinds of fears around us. Solomon may have learned to fear the Lord from watching his father David live out a life of “fearing the Lord” and seeing the results of that commitment.

10 The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; But they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing.11 Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
The Lord helps us by setting up a camp around those who fear Him. “To encamp” is a military term. Just as a captain of an army sends his troops to a place where reinforcements are needed, God instructs His angels to protect us and to set up camp.
Who is the object of this protection? It is “those who fear the Lord”. There are many things that we cannot observe in this kind of a battle because it involves so much that we cannot see.
Sometimes, we don’t even realize that we are in the middle of a battle and are being protected from the enemies’ attack. However, if we look back on our lives from a spiritual point of view, we realize that God has been protecting us through all times, and that His angels had been encamping and surrounding us.
David wants us to savor this grace that comes from God. He wants us to remember it over and over again, and to cherish the blessing of fearing God and relying on the Lord.
David continues to say, “For to those who fear Him there is no want.
The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; But they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing.” No matter how much we trust in our own strength, we will reach a tie of desperate needs. But those who fear the Lord will never be hungry.
In the year 2022, making ends meet is not an easy thing for us. We need to work hard and may even have to do hard labor at times. Yet, what is going to hold us through at the end of the day?
Is it the wisdom and experience we have gained in our lives? Surely those things can help us. But as I said earlier, in order for them to come to use, we must first fear God. The Bible promises that if we live in the fear of God, we will never be in want.
I have a big tree growing in my yard. In the spring, the tree sprouts new leaves, and during the summer, it is covered with countless leaves. But in the fall and winter, every single leaf falls to the ground.
A few weeks ago, I was gathering those leaves with my hands and putting them in a bucket. My wife laughed as she watched me kneeling on the ground and picking up leaves, as more leaves fluttered down than I could keep up with picking.
When I heard about it later from her, it made me think. Maybe, that is symbolic of what our daily lives look like. We try to protect ourselves and our family. But there is only so much that we can do. Honestly, it feels like more things were left undone than got accomplished.
First of all, the Bible does not say that we need to protect ourselves and our families. The one and only thing that the Bible says we need to guard is our heart. This is also what Solomon said.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23).
The Bible tells us that if we guard our hearts to fear God, then God will keep us.
Everyone wishes to live a happy and blessed life and works hard in order to achieve that. The notion of this modern society is that happiness is something we get from winning over others. Therefore, we become highly competitive in order to not get behind others.
However, the Bible doesn’t say that we have to grab or win the blessings with our own hands. Blessings are poured out from God. The Bible promises us that the Lord will bless those who fear Him.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them. For to those who fear Him there is no want. Brothers and sisters in Christ, do those words simply sound like a cliche that Christians say to one another?
If that is how we understand those words, we will miss out on all the valuable benefits that the Bible promises us.
It is like having a Christmas present that is left unopened and forgotten well into next spring or even into summer. This gift box contains what we need the most for now and in the future, but we don’t even pay attention to it as we lead our frantic lives.
A few mornings ago, those words from 2 Corinthians caught my attention and encouraged me greatly, so I wrote them down in my notebook.
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed (2 Corinthians 9:8)
What I can do is finite. But the God I believe in and fear is the One who gives all blessings in abundance. He always has the power to make all grace abound in me and make me abound in every good deed.
There is something that I am always reminded of when I am preparing to preach the Word of God. It’s how much of an impact these things have on our lives.
Whether or not we will believe the words of the Lord’s promise, decide to live in the fear of God, and continue doing so, will have a great impact on our lives. I wonder how many people who once lived on this earth were told about this offer from God in advance, but chose to not accept it during their lifetime.
Last Sunday, I quoted a university professor named Takashi Saito in my sermon. He wrote, “You should keenly be aware that no one likes a normal 55-year-old man.”
For a middle-aged man, those words are hard to hear. But there is a way to live for us that is called the royal road. That is to live with the wisdom and experience that we have been given to us in our life, along with the fear of God.
If we have a family, we need to keep them at the forefront of our thoughts and actions. We also need to think of how best we can contribute to our society as we fear God with our lives.
If we live fearing God, our lives will never be exhausted. Solomon said, “The fear of the Lord is a spring of life” (Proverbs 14:26)
Needless to say, this is a promise not only to the men, but to everyone in the world. If we begin this year with this in mind, and if we continue to live this out, then we will be able to tap into the water of the fountain of life that comes from God. Will you choose to stay afraid of many things in life? Will you continue trying to grasp happiness and protect yourself with your own hands?
Or, will you choose to fear God and accept God’s grace as He opens the doors of heaven? Will you let yourself be protected by God’s mighty hand? What is your choice?
May all of us, without any exception, receive this direct and amazing offer from God. Let’s pray.

２）箴言１４章２６節ー２７節を読みましょう。主を畏れることにより逃れ場を得る、死のわなから逃れるということはどういうことですか。
３）主を畏れることによって「安心を得る」ということについて、英語聖書は「強い確信を得る」と言っています。それはどんな安心、確信なのでしょうか。
４）あなたはどんなことを恐れますか。人の心にはどんな恐れがあるでしょうか。私達の最終的な恐れの原因は何でしょうか。
５）恐れに支配されて生きるということはどういうことですか。主を畏れることにより、それまで恐れていたものを恐れる必要がなくなります。なぜですか。
６）詩篇３４篇７節―１８節を読みましょう。命が狙われる状況の中でダビデが畏れていたのは何ですか。彼は敵を恐れていましたか。
７）このところでダビデは主を畏れる者にはどんなことが約束されていると書いていますか。主を畏れて生きることにより、私達はどんな生涯を歩むことができるのでしょうか。
８）主を畏れる生涯を歩んでいきましょう。そこから与えられる神様の祝福と保護を味わいましょう。
