受難週を迎えるにあたり、今日は特に「イエス・キリストの十字架」が、私達に何をもたらしたのかということについて、四つのことを見ていきたく願っております（大倉）。

十字架が人間にもたらしたもの

私達はイースターを来週の日曜日にひかえ、今週、受難週を迎えます。これからの一週間、私達は２０００年前にイエス・キリストがカルバリの丘へと向かわれた日々を思います。
私の手元に「What if Jesus had never been born」という本があります。もし、キリストがこの世界にお生まれにならなかったら、この世界はどうなっていただろうかという内容の本です。もしキリストが生まれなかったら、私達が恩恵をこうむらなかったものが世界には数多くあります。

受難週を迎えるにあたり、今日は特に「イエス・キリストの十字架」が、私達に何をもたらしたのかということについて、四つのことを見ていきたく願っております。まず、最初に「十字架は私たちの人生に後悔を与えない」ということをお話しします。
私達の人生にリハーサルはなく、まさしく今、私達は人生の本番を生きています。この本番の人生において「後悔に満ちた人生を送りたい」と願っている人がいますか。「ああしておけばよかった、こうしなければよかった」というような後悔だけはしたくないと誰しもが願うのではないでしょうか。
京都大学で宗教学を専門としている教授のカール・ベッカーさんが『人生を振りかえる夜』というテーマで話しているTV番組を以前、見ました。彼は古今東西の宗教のあり方を研究しながら、人間にとって、宗教とは何なのか？生きるとは？ 死ぬとは？ということを研究している国際的な宗教学者です。その働きは研究室の中だけでなされるものではなく、先生は病院やホスピス等で実際に末期患者と対話を行い、医療現場での心のケアの研究を進めてきました。
その先生がこんな興味深いことを言っていました。「死に直面すると、多くの人が自分の心の奥にあることを語り出します」自分の人生を振り返ってみて「この生き方でよかったのか」とか「いったい自分の人生はなんだったのだろう」と考えるというのです。つまり死ぬ間際が、同時に自分の歩んできた旅路を考える時となり、自分の人生を意味づけるきっかけともなるというのです。
そして、それは死を迎える人だけではないと先生は言います。その回りにいる人達も愛する者が亡くなる時「自分のこれまでの人生はこれでよかったのだろうか」と本気で考え始めるというのです。ですから、先生が専門としている「死生学」ではまず「何を思いつつ、死にたいのか？」ということを考えるというのです。
皆さんは何を思いつつ死にたいですか？本心を言えば、ここでメッセージを終え、一週間、じっくりとこのことを皆さんに考えてきていただき、それから来週、続きをお話しできたらと考えるほどに、この問いかけは大切な問いです。
この問いかけに対して「それでは先生はどういう風に死にたいですか？」と尋ねられると、先生はこんなことを語り出しました。「私は平安に死にたい。そのためには、悪いことをしてこなければ後悔はしないでしょ？」「でも、私も人間ですから、悪いことをする。つい、言ってはいけない事を言い、人を傷つけてしまうのです」「心の中にこのような後悔の念があると平安に死ねるとは思えないのですよ」「私はその時に赦してもらいたいという気持ちが起こるのです」
病院やホスピスで何千人もの死に行く人達を見てきた先生が「平安の内に死ぬなら赦してもらわなければ」と言っていることに私たちは驚きます。先生は「赦していただくということが、後悔のない人生なのだ」と言っているのです。でも、いったい誰が私達をゆるすのでしょうか？コリント第二の手紙７章１０節は私たちに語りかけます。
「神の御心に添うた悲しみは、悔いのない救いを得させる悔い改めに導き、この世の悲しみは死をきたらせる」
「神の御心に添うた悲しみ」とは何でしょうか。それは私たちがしてしまった、私たちの心に後悔として残る、悪しきことです。それを聖書は「罪」と呼びます。その自分の罪に気がつき、そんな自分の言動を悲しむ、そこから全ては始まるとこの聖書の言葉は私たちに語りかけるのです。
この悲しみが私たちを悔い改めに導き、私たちはイエス・キリストの十字架による罪の赦しにあずかることができるのです。聖書は、義人は一人もいないと言います。全ての人が罪人だというのです。ということは罪人である私が、罪人である誰かの罪を赦す権限はありません。
しかし、神の一人子イエス・キリストは罪なきお方で、彼が私たちの罪の身代わりとなって死んでくださったことにより、私たちの罪は赦されるのです。なぜキリスト教は無病息災、商売繁盛をうたい文句としないのですか。それが人間の本質的な救いではないからです。
私が日本で生まれ育った教会は日本ホーリネス教団に属していました。かつてその教団の中に癒しのギフトを与えられた牧師がいました。この方が祈ると、本当に病が癒されるということが起こりました。この牧師はそのギフトを用いて、四国に多くの教会を開拓しました。
教会が増えていく状況の中、その牧師はしみじみと言っていたそうです。「肉体の癒しは長く続かないねー。癒される前は必死に教会に来るけど、癒されたら、いつの間にかいなくなっている」。「でもイエス・キリストの十字架によって罪赦された人はその信仰を持ち続けるのよ」。
私たちの魂の救いは私たちの罪が「赦された」という神の承認によってのみ、得られるものなのです。その赦しのために神はその一人子イエス・キリストの命を私たちにお与えになったのです。
神は完全に正しい、義なるお方ゆえに、私たちの罪をそのままにして赦しを宣言することはできないのです。ですから、その私たちの罪の身代わりとしてイエス・キリストは私たちのために神に打たれ、死んだのです。このことを信じる者の罪をキリストの十字架ゆえに赦すと神は言われるのです。
そして、その時に同時に私たちは神の無条件の愛を知るのです。なぜなら、キリストはそんな私たちのために死んでくださったということを知るからです。この愛の力が私たちの人生を生きていく力の源になるのです。
このキリストによって罪赦されている限り、私たちの人生の終わりに、私たちの罪に対する悔いはないということが今から保証されているのです。それは人生の終わりに残されている希望ではなく、この保証を今から知る私たちは今、この時からその希望に生きることができるのです。私たちはこの希望を販売しているのではないのです。それらは神が私たちに無料でくださるものなのです。
皆さんは悔いのない人生を送りたいですか。そのためにまず、神の御心にそうた悲しみを悔い改め、イエス・キリストの十字架を信じませんか。二つ目のこと、それは「十字架は私たちの人生に最良のものを与える」ということです。
ローマ８章３２節
『ご自身の御子をさえ惜しまないで、わたしたちすべての者のために死に渡されたかたが、どうして、御子のみならず万物をも賜わらないことがあろうか』
私達は時に自分の大切にしているものを誰かにあげることがあります。そうすると大抵、それを受け取る人は喜んでくれます。幼児が描いたお父さん、お母さんの絵を皆さんは喜んで、額に入れるでしょう。申し訳ありませんが第三者が客観的にその絵を見るなら、それを額に入れて飾ることはないでしょう。
しかし、それはその子の父母には何よりも価値あるものなのです。なぜなら、我が子が一生懸命にお父さん、お母さんを思って描いてくれた絵だからです。相手が大切にしているものを自分のために手放してくれたのだということを知る時に私達の心には喜びと感謝が生まれます。そんな私たちが他者に与えることができるものの中で、最高のものは何でしょうか。
それは、私たちの「命」です。聖書は神がその一人子イエスの命を私達に与えたというのです。神は最も大切なものを私達に与えて下さったというのです。
ヨハネ３章１６節
『神は実にそのひとり子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。それは御子を信じる者が、ひとりとして滅びることなく、永遠の命を持つためである』
かつて恩師が語っていた言葉を最近、ずっと心に思い巡らしています。私たちはイエス様が私たちのために命を捨てたということを知っています。しかし、父なる神がその一人子イエスの命を私たちのために捧げてくださったということを考えたことがありますでしょうか。
あなたは自分の子の命を誰かを救うために捧げることができますか？なぜ、こういうことを私は言うのでしょうか。なぜなら、自分の子どものために命を捧げる親、またはその覚悟が出来ている者は確かにいるからです。親である皆さんも、このことに同意する方々がきっといるでしょう。しかし、どうでしょうか。
自分の子どもの命を他人に捧げることができる親はいるでしょうか？しかも、その人はあなたと関わりのない、見も知らぬ人であるのなら。その人があなたの家に怒鳴り込んでくる敵対者であるなら。その人があなたの命を狙っている人であるのなら。あなたはそのような人たちを救うために、我が子の命を差し出すことができますか。正直申し上げなければなりませんが、私にはできません。ローマ書５章８節にはこんな言葉があります。
「しかし、まだ罪人であった時、わたしたちのためにキリストが死んで下さったことによって、神は私達に対する愛を示されたのである」。
父なる神はその子キリストの命を私たちが生きるために差し出すことによって、私たちに対する神の愛を示したのです。
『神は実にそのひとり子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。それは御子を信じる者が、ひとりとして滅びることなく、永遠の命を持つためである』
救われるに値しない者に対して、このことが起きたのです。「のど飴」を一つくれた人が、その後、私を「三ツ星レストラン」にも招待してくれることを私は期待しません。しかし「三ツ星レストラン」に招待してくれた人が、私に「のど飴」もくれることなら十分に考えられます。「あなたを支えてくれた人」が「あなたのために命も差し出してくれる保証」はありません。しかし「あなたのために命を差し出した方」が「あなたを支える」ことを躊躇するでしょうか。
ローマ８章３２節

神はその一人子をお与えになるほどに私達を愛してくださったのです。そして、その命を与えて下さったお方は、私達が願うものが、私達の必要なものであり、神の御心にかなったものであるならば、それを拒むことはないと聖書は言います。それは私たちの欲しいものが何でも与えられるということではありません。
父なる神は子である私たちにとって必要なもの、その心に叶っているものを、最も良い時に与えてくれるのです。時に、それは私たちの願っていないものかもしれません。また、それは私たちが願っている時には与えられないかもしれません。しかし、そのこと自体が私たちの神が私たちの真の神であるということの証拠です。
子供が願うものを全て与えることが子供にとっていいことなのか、親なら必ず考え、時には子供のためにノーと私たちは言いますでしょう。私たちは一人子をも私たちのために捧げてくださった父なる神の私たちに対する愛に信頼を置くのです。
三つ目のこと、それは「十字架は私たちの人生の最悪を最善に変える」です。イザヤ５３章５節において預言者イザヤはイエス・キリストが生まれる７５０年前に、彼の十字架についてこのような預言を書き残しました。
しかし彼はわれわれのとが（罪）のために傷つけられ、われわれの不義のために砕かれたのだ。彼はみずから懲らしめを受けて、われわれに平安を与え、その打たれた傷によって、われわれは癒されたのだ。
多くのユダヤ人は今も旧約聖書に約束されているメシアの到来を待っています。しかし、私達はこのイザヤ書に預言されている「彼」こそがメシアなるキリストなのだと信じています。
聖書に「木にかけられる者は呪われる」と書かれているとおり、ユダヤ人にとって「十字架刑に処される同胞が自分達のメシア」だなんてことは信じられないのです。十字架刑は当時、もっとも残虐な処刑でありました。それは目をそむけることでありました。すなわち、その刑は一突きで人間の命を取り去るのではなく、まるでなぶり殺しにするように、時間をかけて人間を殺すからです。そして、その姿は人々の前に曝されるのです。それは人間が迎える最後としてはあまりにもむごたらしいものでした。
しかし、今日、私達の教会もそうですが、キリスト教会はこの処刑に使われた十字架を教会の一番目立つ所に立てています。電気イスやギロチンの台をネックレスにしている人を見かけることはありません。
しかし、教会も私達も最悪の処刑道具である十字架を掲げるのです。なぜ？なぜなら、イザヤの言葉で言いますなら「キリストが十字架によって打たれて下さったその傷」によって「私達が癒されるから」です。この最悪の処刑道具が私達に悔いを残さない生涯へと導くもの、私達にとってこの十字架こそが私たちの救いなのです。
すなわち、最悪と思われたものが、最善となったことを表すのがキリストの十字架なのです。よくマイナスがプラスになると言いますが、このことはそれ以上のこと、すなわちワーストがベストになったのです。この最悪が最善となるということが聖書のメッセージなのです。
創世記にヨセフという人が記されています。彼は兄弟に憎まれ、自分の雇用主から冤罪を受け、命の恩人から忘れられと散散な人生を送ります。それは目を覆いたくなるような最悪の人生と思われました。しかし、それらすべて彼に対して計られた諸悪が、後に最善へ変えられていく様を私達は同じく創世記の中に見出していくのです。そのことを創世記５０章２０節がヨセフの言葉として、このように短く記しています。
「あなたがたはわたしに対して悪をたくらんだが、神はそれを良きに変らせて、今日のように多くの民の命を救おうと計らわれました」。
皆さん、このようなことが、私たちが神と共に歩む人生の旅路で起きるのです。一度限りの人生、わたしはこのような神が介入してくださる場面に立ち合いたいと心から願いますが、皆さんはいかがでしょか。パウロはそのキリストにある新しい人生のことを簡潔にこう言い表したのです。
ローマ８章２８節
「神は神を愛する者達、すなわち、ご計画に従って召された者達と共に働いて、万事を益となるようにしてくださることを私達は知っている」
もし皆さんの中に自分の人生にとってマイナスと思われる、ワーストと思われるようなことの直面している人がいましたら、十字架を見上げてください。その時に私達は「あなたの最悪は最善に変えられる！」という力強いメッセージを神から聞くのです。
もしかしたらこれまで散々な人生を送ってきましたという方がいるかもしれない。それは最悪な日々でしたと自己嫌悪に陥っている方がいるかもしれない。しかし、どうでしょうか、その最悪を知っている故に、イエス・キリストに出会い、イエス・キリストを信じて救われたとするのなら。
神を前にして私たちにとって人生最高の日とは結婚した日でも、我が子が生まれた日でもないのです。お気に入りのチームがワールドシリーズを制覇した日でもなく、宝くじが当たった日でもないのです。私たちの人生にとって一番、最高の日は私たちがイエス・キリストを信じて救われて、永遠の命が確証された日なのです。その最高の日は私たちの最悪の日といつも隣り合わせだということを、どうか覚えてください。神様は今日、あなたをそのような人生へと招いておられるのです。
最後のこと、それは「十字架は私たちの生涯に目的を与える」ということです。私達、人間にとってなくてはならないものがあります。先ほどお話しましたカール・ベッカーさんはこんなことも言っていました。「人間は意味を求めます」。私達は意味のないことには耐えられません。
皆さん、もし皆さんが誰かから「行ってこい」と行き先も指定されずに、言われたらどうしますか。「行ってこいと言われてもどこに行くねん？」と聞き返すでしょう。まるで漫才のボケとツッコミのようです。しかし、実際に我々の人生はいかがですか。
「生きてこい」と言われるかのようにして、私たちはこの世界に産まれました。しかし「生きてこい」と言われても、「どこに向かって？」「何のために？」という問いの答えを私たちは知らないのです。
「老後はこう生きよ、こうして成功者になれ、これからの時代はこうなる」と皆が各々、声高々に自分の意見を動画にあげます。しかし、それらの言葉の発信に先の問いの答えは含まれていないのです。「こうして生きたらいいよ」。でも「どこに向かって？」「何のために？」
あらゆることを語る前に、まずはこのことに対する答えを持っているということが本来、私たち人間の大前提と思うのですが、皆さんはどう思いますか？これらの答えがないのに「どのように生きるのか」を語っても、その言葉は虚しいのです。私達は勉強する意味、働く意味、結婚する意味、もっと実存的な問いかけになりますと、生まれてきた意味、生きている意味、そして死ぬ意味までも知るべきです。なぜなら、意味を知ることによって私たちの心の動機が確立されるからです。
特に今、学校で学んで、これから社会に出て行こうというような若い方々を見ていますと、このことを思います。皆さん、一生懸命に勉強をして、色々な体験をして、様々なことを吸収しています。それでは質問、それを学んでどうするの？学位をとってどうするの？
これらの学習と経験は確かに、皆さんの心と頭に蓄積されていることでしょう。しかし、皆さんにとってとても大切なことがあります。それはその蓄積されたものを何のために使うのかということです。せっかく生涯を歩むために必要な諸々の道具を得たとしても、その使い方とその目的を知らなければ、私達はやがて行き詰まってしまいます。悔いのない人生とは、すなわち私達が自分の人生に意味と目的を見出し、それに自らを捧げることができたかということで計ることができるかと思います。
そして、このことは精神科医もよく言うのですが、どういうわけか人間は「自分のためだけに生きている」とその心に虚しさが生まれてくるというのです。自分の労力も時間も財もただ自分のためだけに使っていると、どういうわけか、そこに喜びは失われていくというのです。この「どういうわけか」という時には、その背後に神様がおられます。どういうことでしょうか。
そうです、神様は私達の心に、自分自身を誰かのために用いていくと、不思議と心の中に喜びや生きがいというものが生まれてくるように造られたということです。そして、その誰かのために生きるということにおいて、最も価値のある生き方は「自分のために死んでくださった、そして、今も生きておられるイエスのために生きること」なのです。イスラエルの二代目の王であったソロモンは伝道の書の中で、「よくぞここまで書きましたな」というほどに「働く事には意味がないとか、生きることも虚しい」と嘆き悲しんでいますが、その結論においていうのです。
伝道の書１２章１節
「あなたの若い日に、あなたの造り主を覚えよ。悪しき日がきたり、年が寄って「わたしには何の楽しみもない」と言うようにならない前に」
彼は最後にこう言っているのです。あなたが創り主を知るのなら、あなたは働くこと、生きることの意味と目的が与えられる！なぜ、彼はあえて「若い日に」と言ったのか。なぜなら、ソロモン自身が刻まれ、彼の残された人生を指折り数えながら悟ったことが、自分の「生きる意味と目的」を知るなら早ければ早いほどいうことだったからです。
確かに自分はどこかに向かって歩いている、そうであるなら一日も早く、自分がどこに向かって歩いているのかを知った方がいい、そして一日も早く、その道中に自分が与えられている使命を知るほうがいいからです。これらを知るならば、ただ闇雲に自分の人生設計を建てる必要がなくなるからです。そして、最後になって「あぁー、わたしには何の楽しみもない」などと言うことがないためです。
年配の方々、どうか「私はもう年とっちゃったから」なんて言わないでください。「今日の私達はこれまでの自分の中で一番、若いのです」。遅くはありません。今日、私たちは私たちの造り主を覚えようではありませんか。
十字架によって私たちは悔いのない人生を送ることができるのです！一人子イエスの命を私たちにくださったお方が、私たちに万物をくださらないことがあろうか！十字架は最悪なことが最善となりうるシンボルなのだ！それは隣り合わせなのだ。これらは全て神の愛によって、私たちが無償でいただくことができることなのです。それを知るのなら、私たちに残された人生の生き方は自ずと分かるのです。なぜ、神様は今も私たちを生かしているのかが分かるのです。
コリント第二の手紙５章１５節
「そして、彼がすべての人のために死んだのは、生きている者がもはや自分のためにではなく、自分のために死んでよみがえったかたのために、生きるためである」
２０２６年の受難週、このキリストの十字架に生きる意味を見出す方が起こされるように願ってやみません。

What the Cross Has Brought to Humanity

With Easter being next Sunday, this week, we observe Passion Week. This week, we will reflect on the days from 2000 years ago when Jesus Christ made His way to the cross of Calvary.
I have a book called What If Jesus Had Never Been Born. This book explores what the world would have been like if Christ had not been born into it. If Christ had not been born, there would be so many benefits in the world we would not have.
Medicine, politics, ethics, social welfare, education, literature, art . . .
No one can match the achievements left behind by Jesus of Nazareth, whose public ministry lasted a mere three and a half years and who, at the end of it, rode not a warhorse or a carriage, but a young donkey. And, astonishingly, this man was ultimately sentenced to death and crucified. Common sense tells us that it is inconceivable for someone who meets such an end to leave anything behind for future generations. For at that time, Jesus Christ was counted among the criminals and put to death.
As we enter the Passion Week, I would like to focus today on four specific ways in which the “Cross of Jesus Christ” has benefited us. First, I would like to talk about how “the cross does not bring regret into our lives.”
There are no rehearsals in our lives; right now, we are living the real thing. Is there anyone who wishes to “live a life full of regrets” in this real life?I think everyone hopes to avoid the kind of regret that comes from thinking, “I wish I had done this instead” or “I shouldn’t have done that.”
I once watched a TV program featuring Professor Carl Becker, a specialist in religious studies at Kyoto University, speaking on the theme of “A Night to Reflect on Life.” He is an internationally renowned scholar of religion who studies the nature of religions throughout history and across the globe, exploring questions such as: What does religion mean to humanity? What does it mean to live? And what does it mean to die? His work is not confined to the laboratory; he has engaged in dialogue with terminally ill patients in hospitals and hospices, advancing research on emotional care in clinical settings.
That professor said something really interesting. “When faced with death, many people begin to speak about what lies deep within their hearts.” He says that when people look back on their lives, they wonder things like, “Was this the right way to live?” or “What was my life all about?” In other words, the moment of death is also the moment when one reflects on the journey one has taken, and it serves as an opportunity to give meaning to one’s life.
And the professor says that this is not limited to those who are facing death. He says that when someone they love passes away, the people around them also begin to seriously wonder, “Was my life up to this point really for the best?” That is why, in the field of thanatology (study of death), which is the professor’s specialty, the first thing to consider is: “What would you like to think about when you die?”
What would you like to think about when you die? To be honest, this question is so important that I am tempted to end my message here, give you all a week to think it over carefully, and then continue to speak next week.
When asked in response, “So, how would you like to die, Professor?”, he began to speak the following. “I want to die in peace. To do that, if I haven’t done anything wrong, I won’t have any regrets, right?” “But I am also human, so I do bad things. I end up saying things I shouldn’t, and I end up hurting people.” “I don’t think I could die in peace with such regret weighing on my heart.” “That’s when I feel the desire to be forgiven.”
We are surprised to hear a professor who has witnessed thousands of people nearing death in hospitals and hospices say, “If I am to die in peace, I must be forgiven.” The professor is saying, “A life without regrets is one in which you are forgiven.” But who on earth is going to forgive us? 2 Corinthians 7:10 speaks to us.
Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
What is “Godly sorrow”? That is a terrible thing we have done, something that will remain in our hearts as a source of regret. This passage from the Bible tells us that everything begins with recognizing our own sins and grieving over our words and deeds.
This sorrow leads us to repentance, and we are able to receive forgiveness of sins through the cross of Jesus Christ. The Bible says that there is not a single righteous person. It says that all people are sinners. That means that as a sinner myself, I have no authority to forgive the sins of another sinner.
However, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, was sinless, and because He died on our behalf, our sins are forgiven. Why doesn’t Christianity promote good health and prosperity in business? That is because it is not the true salvation of humanity.
The church where I was born and raised in Japan belonged to the Japan Holiness Church. There was once a pastor in that church who had been given the gift of healing. When this person prayed, people’s illnesses were actually healed. Using this gift, the pastor established many churches in Shikoku.
Amid the growing number of churches, it is said that the pastor remarked with deep feeling, “Physical healing doesn’t last long, does it? People come to church desperately before they are healed, but once they are, they disappear all of a sudden.” “But those whose sins have been forgiven through the cross of Jesus Christ continue to hold fast to that faith.”
The salvation of our souls can be obtained only through God’s affirmation that our sins have been “forgiven.” It was for that forgiveness that God gave us the life of His only Son, Jesus Christ.
Because God is completely righteous and just, He cannot simply overlook our sins and declare us forgiven. Therefore, Jesus Christ was struck down and died for us as a substitute for our sins. God says that the sins of those who believe in this are forgiven because of the cross of Christ.
And at that moment, we come to know God’s unconditional love. That is because we come to know that Christ died for us. This power of love is the source of strength that enables us to live our lives.
As long as our sins are forgiven through Christ, we are assured even now that we will have no regrets about our sins at the end of our lives. It is not a hope reserved for the end of life; rather, because we know this assurance now, we can live in that hope from this very moment. We are not selling this hope. It is something God gives us freely.
Do you want to live a life without regrets?
To that end, why not first repent of the godly sorrow and believe in the cross of Jesus Christ? The second thing is that “the cross brings the best things into our lives.”
Romans 8:32
He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?
Sometimes we give things we cherish to someone else. When we do that, the person receiving it is usually delighted. I am sure you would be happy to frame the drawings your child has drawn of you, dads and moms. I am sorry, but if a third party were to look at that drawing objectively, they probably wouldn’t frame it and hang it on the wall.
However, to that child’s parents, it is more precious than anything else. Because it is a heartfelt drawing by their own child thinking of Dad and Mom. When we realize that someone has given up something they cherish for our sake, our hearts are filled with joy and gratitude. What is the greatest thing we can offer to others?
It is our “life.”
The Bible tells us that God gave us the life of His only Son, Jesus. It says that God has given us the most precious thing.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Lately, I have been thinking a lot about something my former mentor once said. We know that Jesus gave His life for us. But have you ever stopped to think about the fact that God the Father gave up the life of His only Son, Jesus, for us?
Could you sacrifice your child’s life to save someone else? Why am I saying this? Because, there are certainly parents who would give their lives for their children, or who are prepared to do so. I am sure there are many of you parents who would agree with this. But what do you think?
Are there any parents who would be willing to sacrifice their own child’s life for someone else? Especially if that person is a complete stranger with no connection to you.If that person is an adversary who storms into your home yelling. If that person is the one trying to kill you. Could you sacrifice your own child’s life to save people like that? I have to be honest: I cannot do it. In Romans 5:8 there are these words:
But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.God the Father demonstrated His love for us by giving up the life of His Son, Christ, so that we might live.For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
This happened to those who did not deserve to be saved. I don’t expect someone who gives me a single throat lozenge to invite me to a “Michelin three-star restaurant” afterward. However, it’s entirely possible that the person who invited me to a “Michelin three-star restaurant” might also give me some throat lozenge. There is no guarantee that a person who has supported you would be willing to give their life for you. However, would the One who gave His life for you hesitate to support you?
Romans 8:32

God loved us so much that He gave us His only Son. And the Bible tells us that the One who gave us that life will not deny us anything we ask for, provided that what we ask for is what we need and is in accordance with God’s will. That doesn’t mean we will be given everything we want.
God the Father gives us, His children, what we need—what is in accordance with His will—at the most opportune time. Sometimes, it may not be what we want. Or it may not be given to us when we want it. However, that very fact is proof that our God is our true God.
As parents, we inevitably ask ourselves whether giving our children everything they want is really in their best interest, and sometimes we have to say “no” for their sake. We place our trust in the love that God the Father has shown us by giving up His only Son for our sake.
The third thing is that “the cross transforms the worst of our lives into the best.” In Isaiah 53:5, the prophet Isaiah wrote this prophecy about Jesus Christ’s crucifixion 750 years before His birth.
But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.
Many Jews are still waiting for the coming of the Messiah promised in the Old Testament. However, we believe that “He” mentioned in this passage from Isaiah is none other than Christ, the Messiah.
As the Bible states, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” so it is simply inconceivable to Jews that a fellow Jew who is crucified could be their Messiah. Crucifixion was the most brutal form of execution at the time. It was something that made one look away. In other words, this punishment does not take a person’s life with a single thrust, but rather kills them slowly over time, as if torturing them to death. And so, that sight was laid bare before everyone. It was far too gruesome to be the end that awaits a human being.
However, today, just as in our church, Christian churches display the cross used for this execution in the most prominent place in their buildings. You don’t see people wearing an electric chair or a guillotine block as a necklace.
Yet both the church and we ourselves hold up the cross, the most horrific instrument of execution. Why? Because, as Isaiah says, “by the wounds that Christ received on the cross,” “we are healed.” This instrument of execution, the most dreadful of all, leads us to a life free of regret; for us, this cross is our salvation.
In other words, the cross of Christ symbolizes how what seemed to be the worst turned out to be the best. People often say that a negative can turn into a positive, but in this case, it went even further—the worst became the best. The message of the Bible is that the worst can become the best.
The Book of Genesis mentions a man named Joseph. He leads a miserable life, hated by his brothers, falsely accused by his master, and forgotten by the man whose life he saved. It seemed like the worst possible life—one you’d want to look away from.
However, we also see in Genesis how all the evils that were brought upon him were later turned into good. Genesis 50:20 briefly records this as Joseph’s words.
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
Everyone, this is what happens as we journey through life with God. We only live once, and I sincerely hope to witness such moments when God intervenes—what about you? Paul succinctly described this new life in Christ as follows:
Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
If any of you are facing something that feels like a setback or the worst thing that could happen in your life, please look up at the cross. At that moment, we hear a powerful message from God: “Your worst can be turned into your best!”
There may be some of you who feel you have had a terrible life up to this point. There may be some people who are wallowing in self-loathing, thinking, “Those were the worst days of my life.” But what if, precisely because you know what the worst is like, you encountered Jesus Christ, believed in Him, and were saved?
In the eyes of God, the greatest day of our lives is neither the day we got married nor the day our child was born. It isn’t the day our favorite team wins the World Series, nor is it the day we win the lottery. The greatest day of our lives is the day we believed in Jesus Christ, were saved, and received the assurance of eternal life. Please remember that our best days are always right next to our worst. God is calling you to such a life today.
The last thing is that “the cross gives our lives a purpose.” There are things that are indispensable to us humans. Carl Becker, whom I mentioned earlier, also said this: “People seek meaning.” We can’t stand things that are meaningless.
Everyone, what would you do if someone told you to “go” without specifying where? “Even if I am told to ‘go,’ where am I supposed to go?” you’d probably ask in return. It would seem like a comedy routine. But what about our own lives?
It is as if we were told, “Go out and live,” when we were born into this world. But even if we’re told to “go out and live,” we don’t know the answers to the questions, “Where to?” and “For what purpose?”
Everyone is posting videos where they loudly proclaim their opinions, saying things like, “This is how you should live in your old age,” “This is how you become successful,” and “This is what the future will look like.” However, the answer to the previous question is not contained in those words. “This is how you should live.” But “Where to?” “For what purpose?”
Before we discuss anything else, I believe that having an answer to this question is fundamentally a prerequisite for us as human beings. What do you all think? Without these answers, any talk of “how to live” seems empty. We should understand the meaning of studying, the meaning of working, and the meaning of marriage; and when it comes to more existential questions, we should also understand the meaning of being born, the meaning of living, and even the meaning of dying. This is because understanding the meaning helps solidify our inner motivations.
I find myself thinking about this especially now, when I see young people who are currently in school and about to enter the workforce. Everyone is studying hard, gaining all sorts of experiences, and learning a great deal. So, here’s the question: What are you going to do with that knowledge? What are you going to do with your degree?
I am sure these lessons and experiences have been building up in your hearts and minds. However, there is something very important for all of you. That is: What will you use all that you have accumulated for? Even if we manage to acquire all the tools we need to navigate life, if we don’t know how to use them or what their purpose is, we will eventually reach a dead end. I believe that a life without regrets can be measured by whether we were able to find meaning and purpose in our lives and dedicate ourselves to them.
And, as psychiatrists often point out, for some reason, when people feel they are “living only for themselves,” a sense of emptiness arises within them. It is said that when you devote your energy, time, and resources solely to yourself, for some reason, the joy in doing so gradually fades away. Whenever we say “for some reason,” God is behind it. What does that mean?
That’s right—God has designed our hearts so that when we devote ourselves to serving others, a sense of joy and purpose naturally arises within us. And when it comes to living for someone else, the most meaningful way to live is to live for Jesus, who died for us and who is still alive today. Solomon, the second king of Israel, laments in the Book of Ecclesiastes—to the point where one might say, “You’ve really gone and written all that”— that “there is no meaning in work, and life is meaningless.” However, he reaches this conclusion:
Ecclesiastes 12:1
Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”—
This is what he says at the end. If you know the Creator, you will be given the meaning and purpose of your work and your life! Why did he go out of his way to say “days of youth”? This is because Solomon himself, as he grew older and counted down the days of his remaining life, came to realize that the sooner one knows one’s “meaning and purpose in life,” the better.
It’s true that I am walking toward some destination; if that is the case, I’d better find out as soon as possible where I am headed, and I’d better discover the mission I have been given along the way as soon as possible. If you know these things, you won’t have to plan your life haphazardly. And so that you don’t end up saying, “I find no pleasure in them,” when it’s all over.
To those who are elderly, please don’t say things like, “I’m too old for that.” “Today, we are younger than we have ever been.” It is not too late. Let us remember our Creator today.
Through the cross, we can live a life free of regret! If God gave us His only Son, Jesus, would He not also give us all things? The cross is a symbol of how the worst can become the best! The two go hand in hand. All of these are things we can receive freely through God’s love. If we know that, the way we should live the rest of our lives will become clear. We come to understand why God continues to keep us alive even now.
2 Corinthians 5:15
And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
As we approach Passion Week in 2026, I pray with all my heart that people may come to find meaning in life through the cross of Christ.
