最近、ヴィヴィアン・グリックという人が書いた「庭仕事から学んだ人生のレッスン」という本を読みました。なぜ、この本を買ったかと言いますと、こんな冒頭の言葉が目についたからです『自然界の事実はすべて、心に起きることの何かを象徴している』。そうです、神様がこの自然界を造られたとするのなら、そこに貫かれている法則は同じように神の御手の中で造られた私達の心で起きることを象徴しているはずです。
この世界の万象を観察しておりますと分かってくることがあります。それは何事も急成長しているものには注意を払う必要があるということです。海の中に広がる赤潮にしても、サンゴを食い散らすオニヒトデの急な繁殖でも、また「バブル」と呼ばれた急激な株価の高騰、地価や住宅価格の高騰、急なキャリアの成功、このようなことは歓迎されるものですが、私達はよくよく注意していなければ足がすくわれます。
私達の世界には「一夜にして」というものが確かにありますが、神様が造られたこの世界を見渡すのなら、多くのものは時間をかけて変化する、時間をかけて成長する、時間をかけて増えるということを私達は見出すことでしょう。

完走を目指して！

かつて日本からこの国に船に乗ってきたという方たちが皆さんの中にいるかと思います。あるいは飛行機でありながら、ホノルルやアンカレッジで給油してこちらに来ましたという方もいるでしょう。時代は変わりました。今や船に乗らず、給油をせずとも私達は世界各地に行けるようになりました。そうなりますと、私達の関心は「行く」ということよりも「いかにして早く」ということに向けられ、その「より早く！」という私達の願いに応えて、今日、飛行機のみならず色々なものが開発されています。
今でこそ洗濯機と脱水機は別々になっていますが、私が子供の頃の洗濯機は二層式で洗濯機と脱水機は一心同体でした。否、私が幼い頃にはまだ脱水機のない洗濯機もありました。すなわち、その洗濯機にはローラーがついていて、洗った服を手動で回し、水を絞り出すのです（懐かしいですね）。さらに、私の年代前のことになりますが、この洗濯機の前には洗濯板の上で服は洗われていました。言うまでもなく当時と今を比べたら、洗濯にかかる時間と手間には大きな違いがあります。そう、当然今は、昔の数倍の早さで苦労なく洗濯ができるのです。そして、これは一例で、私達の身の回りにあるものは今もより便利なものへと開発されています。そして、より便利なもののになるために最も大切なことは「いかにより早く」ということなのです。
これら身近な開発は私達の生活に余裕を与えてくれるものに思われましたが、皮肉なことに、世の中が早く、便利になればなるほど、私達は忙しくなり、私達の生活ペースは早くなりました。私達は毎日、「早く、早く」と急き立てられているのです。私達が生活のペースをコントロールしているのではなく、生活のペースが私達の首根っこを摑まえているのです。
そして、時々ふと思うのです。この早さは人間が生きるべき、本来のペースなのだろうかと。「本来の人間のペース」とは「神様が私達のために予め定めているペース」のことで、それに照らし合わせますのなら、おそらく私達は現在、人の心身に見合ったペースよりもはるかに早く、毎日を生きているのではないでしょうか。
シリーズとして見てきております聖書、箴言の中にはこのような言葉があります『初めに急いで得た資産は、その終わりがさいわいでない』（箴言２０章２１節）。『急いで得た富は減る、少しずつたくわえる者はそれを増すことができる』（箴言１３章１１節）『欲の深い人は急いで富を得ようとする、かえって欠乏が自分の所に来ることを知らない』（箴言２８章２２節）。
ロモンが箴言の中にこんなにも「急いで何かを得る」ということについて警告とも言える言葉を書いていることはとても興味深いことです。ここには主に急いで得る「資産」とか「富」ということが書かれており、それらの終わりはさいわいではなく、それらは減ってしまうというのです。
日本で「一秒で一億稼ぐ」という本を出し、実際にそのような収入を得ていた３２歳の男性が最近、破産してしまったようです。マスコミにも華やかに登場し、かつては三億円の札束の前で記念撮影をしていた方です。彼は今、高級車を売却し、住宅も解約し、六本木にあるオフィスからも退去しました。そして、それらを全て失った自らの心中を今、こう書き記しています「もう金への執着はありません。（中略）生きてるだけで幸せです」「今日から無理をしてお金持ちのふりをする必要がなくなったので、楽になりました。もう大分疲れたんだと思います」「メディアで発言する自分の言葉に自分が洗脳を受けていき、周りを取り巻く女性たちに逃げ、全てから一時的にでも解放されたいがために飲むアルコール。この1か月間も日夜、突き抜けきってしまおうと思って行動しては迷いを生じの繰り返し、行動原理を失っていき、とうとう限界に達しました」と。
彼は若くして短期間に大金を手にいれました。合法的であるのなら裁かれることはないでしょう。しかし、その彼が「無理をしてお金もちのふりをする必要がなくなり、楽になった」とか「行動原理を失っていき、限界に達した」というコメントを言っていることは興味深いことです。救いはこの方はまだ若く、これからも人生をやり直す時間はたっぷりあるということです。
彼の「無理をして」という言葉や「行動原理を失った」という言葉の中に、この方は自分が働くべきペース、暮らすべきペース、生きるべきペースを見失ってしまったということを想像するのは私だけでしょうか。そう考えますと、まさしくソロモンが今から３０００年前に書き記した言葉は今も有効であり、また先ほどのソロモンの言葉に記されている急いで得る資産とか富を「急いで得た知識」とか「急いで得た経験」、そして「急いで得た成長」という言葉に置き換えても通じるものがあるように思えるのですが、いかがでしょうか。
イザヤはその５５章の中にあの有名な言葉を残しました。8わが思いは、あなたがたの思いとは異なり、わが道は、あなたがたの道とは異なっていると主は言われる。9天が地よりも高いように、わが道は、あなたがたの道よりも高く、わが思いは、あなたがたの思いよりも高い。
このイザヤの言葉が言っていることは、私達の思いと神様との思いは異なるということであり、神様の道は私達のそれより高く、その思いも私達のそれよりも高いということです。それではその神の思いと私達の思いとが異なるということは、何が異なるのか、そのことがこのすぐ後に書かれています。
10天から雨が降り、雪が落ちてまた帰らず、地を潤して物を生えさせ、芽を出させて、種まく者に種を与え、食べる者にかてを与える。11このように、わが口から出る言葉も、むなしくわたしに帰らない。わたしの喜ぶところのことをなし、わたしが命じ送った事を果す。12あなたがたは喜びをもって出てきて、安らかに導かれて行く。山と丘とはあなたの前に声を放って喜び歌い、野にある木はみな手を打つ。（イザヤ５５章８節－１２節）。
このイザヤ書には天と地の関わりが書かれています。そうです、地の産物は天から降る雨や雪と関わっており、それらが天から降るということがまずあって、地に降り注いだその雨と雪が地を潤すことにより、そこに種がまかれ、その種から新芽が出、それが成長し、やがて実となり、遂には人の糧となるというのです。
神様は先を急ぎ、天からトマトやインゲン豆を降らせませんでした。まずトマトやインゲン豆とは全く関係のないように見える雨や雪を降らせ、それらが土という土壌に蒔かれることにより、そこに種が成長できる環境が整い、その上に種がまかれ、種から新芽が出、花が咲き、実がなり、収穫へと導かれるプロセスを神様は定められました。ここから分かることは言うまでもなく、これらは急き立てられてなされるものではなくて、時間をかけて導かれていくことだということです。
同じようにここには「このように、わが口から出る言葉もむなしくわたしにはかえらない」と書かれています。「このように」とは主の言葉が成就することも、同じように瞬く間に実りがあるというようなことではなく、そこにはプロセスがあり、時間の経過があり、最後に実りへと至るということです。さらに、私達が心に留めるべきことは、この主の言葉はすぐに成就することはないけれど、ここにははっきりと「その言葉がむなしくわたしにはかえらない」と書かれています。そのような意味において、わが思いも道もあなたがたの思いや道とは異なり、それらはあなたがたのものよりも高いと主は言われるのです。言い方を変えれば、「私達が頭で計らう時」と「主の時」とは異なるということです。

さて、それではソロモンは「急ぐな」と記しつつ、何か別の生き方を私達に示しているでしょうか。彼はこう書きました『勤勉な人の計画は、ついにその人を豊かにする。すべて怠るものは貧しくなる』（箴言２１章５節）。
ここには「勤勉な人の計画」と書かれています。「すぐに結果を求める人」と「勤勉」や「計画」とという言葉は同居できません。「勤勉」も「計画」もそこには「時間の長さ」があり、また「プロセス」があるからです。「勤勉」も「計画」も分かりやすく言えば「こつこつと事を進める心」です。聖書は、そのような人は豊かになり、それを怠る人は貧しくなるというのです。
牛や鹿が子を産むシーンなどが時々、テレビで放映しますと驚きます。生まれたばかりの子供はしばし地面に倒れていますが、しばらくすると立ち上がろうとします。そして、数時間の内に、自分の足で立ち、親の乳を吸い始め、やがてすぐに自ら草を食べるようになり、一年半もすれば子を産むことができるのです。私達は子牛やキリンがストローラーに乗せられているのを見たことがありません。このような動物は早く立たなければ、すぐに肉食動物の餌食となってしまうことでしょう。それを免れるためにも神様は彼らの肉体的な成長にスピードを加えたのでありましょう。
それに対して人の子はどうですか。生まれたばかりの乳児はまず、自分で寝返りもできないというところから始まり、まさしく独り立ちしていくためには２０年近くも年月が必要なのです。神様は私達人間を一歳で走り出し、三歳で恋をし、五歳で独立し、７歳で結婚し、９歳で親となり、１５歳でリタイヤするようには造られていないのです。私達には明らかに成長すべきペースがあるのです。
神様は一日で天地万物を創造しませんでした。神なのですから、そうすることもできたでしょう、しかし、そうなさらず、そのために六日をかけました。否、実際には七日をかけ、六日間のはたらきと等しくあるかのように、七日目を休む日とされました。なぜ、あえてそんなに時間をかけたのでしょうか。それはあたかも私達に大切なことを教えるためであったように思われます。神が世界をそのように時間をかけて創造されたということは、すなわち私達の人生も一つ一つ、順を追ってかたちができあがっていくということです。時間がかかるということです。
聖書は人類史のある特定された時代の１００年について書いているのではありません。そこに記録されていることは長きにわたりこの世界に起きた出来事です。最初の人、アダム、イブから始まった神と人との記録です。聖書をはじめから読み進めていくと分かるのですが、そこには決して先を急がない時の流れがあります。人の経験はそこにいたるまでの多くの失敗と教訓によって時間をかけて成長へと導かれていきます。
まさしく神とイスラエルの物語が始まる、その祖父となりましたアブラハムに神様が語りかけた時、アブラハムは７５歳でした。先を急ぐのなら彼が３０歳ぐらいの時に声をかけ、物事を早く進めることができたでしょう。しかし、神様は時間をかけました。
モーセは４０年間、じっくりとエジプトの宮廷において帝王学を学び、エジプト王朝の表も裏も見、それからさらに４０年、今度はまったく違う環境、ミデアンの荒野で静寂の中に身を起き、エジプトからイスラエルの民を導きだしてからはさらに４０年もの間、荒野の中をさ迷い歩きました。私達は考えます。これらのことに何も合計１２０年もかける必要はないのではなかろうか。それぞれ１０年、計３０年で十分ではないかと。しかし、皆さん、違うのです、主の思いは私達の思いとは異なるのです。
イエス様の弟子達はキリストのようになるための一日八時間、二週間短期集中講座を受けたのではなく、三年半、イエス様と寝食を共にして訓練を受けました。床につく時も目覚める時も、イエス様は彼らの目の前におり、そのお方の生活の一部始終を間近に見て、彼らは学んだのです。
このイエス様がもしその誕生と成長をスキップして、成人男性として突如、ガリラヤ湖畔に出現すれば手間暇はかからなかったことでしょう。誕生以降、３０年の間、聖書にはその言動も記されていないのですからその間を飛ばしてしまってもよかったと思われます。しかし、神の計画はそのところにおて先を急がずにじっくりと時間をかけてイエス様は公生涯へと導かれていくのです。
神はイエス・キリストをアブラハムの時代やエリヤの時代に誕生させずに、まさしく「時が満ちて」このお方は生まれました。旧約聖書に記録されている最後の書と新約聖書におけるイエスの誕生までの４００年は沈黙の時代でその闇夜は長く続きました。しかし、その暗さゆえにキリスト出現の光は輝きました。
時々、陸上競技の中距離走、もしくは長距離走を見ていますと、スタート地点でものすごいスピードで飛び出す選手がいます。その速さたるや圧倒的なのです。このままいったらどんな記録が出るのだろうと思います。その人は１分、もって３分ほどはその集団のトップにいます。しかし、やがて一人、また一人と抜かれていき、いよいよ最後尾となり、挙句の果てには途中で棄権をしてしまうことさえもあるのです。
このことは私達の経験を通してでも分かるのではないでしょうか。この光景を私達は幼い時から、その学び舎で、会社で、そして教会で見てきています。皆さん、明らかに人生は短距離走ではありません。一発勝負ではなく、１０メートルの旅路ではないのです。そう、どんなに最初に勢いがあっても、それは継続されなければ意味がないのです。それは一日で完結するものではなく常に明日につながるものなのです。そうです、そうであるのなら私達が目指すべきことは早い、遅いではなくてこの旅路を最後まで完走することではないでしょうか。
私達の日々の歩みには一時の追い風でスイスイと前に進むこともあれば、風がピタっと止まってしまい、前に進めないということもあるでしょう。道に迷ったり、道を間違えたり、誰かを抱えて歩まねばならないこともあるでしょう。取り残されたように皆が自分を追い越していくように思える時もあるでしょう。でも肝心なことは神様から託されているその道から外れずに、私達に託された人生を主と共に味わいながら完走することです。パウロもこう記しています。
『5しかし、あなたは、何事にも慎み、苦難を忍び、伝道者のわざをなし、自分の務を全うしなさい。6わたしは、すでに自身を犠牲としてささげている。わたしが世を去るべき時はきた。7わたしは戦いをりっぱに戦いぬき、走るべき行程を走りつくし、信仰を守りとおした。8今や、義の冠がわたしを待っているばかりである。かの日には、公平な審判者である主が、それを授けて下さるであろう。わたしばかりではなく、主の出現を心から待ち望んでいたすべての人にも授けて下さるであろう』（Ⅱテモテ４章５節－８節）。
パウロはしかと心に刻んでいました。私は一度の戦い、一度の走り、一度の信仰のために生きているのではないと。彼は自分は「戦い抜く、「走りぬく」、そして「信仰を守り通す」とここで言っているのです。そうです、彼は自らが走るべき行程を完走することをここで言っているのです。そして、この旅路を完走した時に、私は主から義の冠をいただくのだと、その日を何よりも待ち望んでいるのです。
いかがでしょうか。皆さんの現在の生活のペースはいかがですか。それは神様が私達のために定めてくださったペースですか。数年かけて成長すべきことを三日で成長しようとしていませんか（特に子供達に対して、親である私達はこのような無理を求めていないでしょうか）。この世界のペースにが巻き込まれていないでしょうか。自分の生き方の手綱は誰が握っているのでしょうか。あたかもこれができないから落伍者、これさえできれば勝利者というように、人生はさらにその先に続くことを忘れてはいないでしょうか。
どうか私達一人一人が主が定めてくださっているペースを保つことができますように。義の冠は一夜にしてたどり着くものではないということを、私達の走るべき信仰の旅路は瞬時に完成するものではなく、それは毎日コツコツと継続されるべきものであるということを私達が忘れることがありませんように。主のもとに続く、今日の歩みを今日も最善を尽くして成し、そして明日も同じように歩み続ける。そのことによって私達は主が備えたもう、ゴールに向かっているのです。お祈りしましょう。
Pursuing to finish the race

In this congregation, there might be those who came to this country from Japan by ship. Those who came here by airplane may have had the opportunity to stop by Anchorage, Alaska, or Hawaii to refuel. Well, things have changed. Nowadays, we are able to travel anywhere in the world without taking a ship or having to stop for a refuel. This situation has changed our concern such as “how we can go” into “how fast we can go.” To satisfy our new concern, a lot of new technologies are being developed and invented today.
Think about a washer. The washer we use has a function as a washer and spinner, but when I was a child, it wasn’t so. They were two different parts of the unit. Actually, when I was a small child, we didn’t have a thing such as a spinner. Do some of you remember a washer with a roller? We had to slide clothes into the roller and crank it in order to squeeze water out of the clothes. Good old days! Before my time, things were even more different. They washed dirty clothes on the washing board by hand. You can see there is a huge difference of time and labor consumed in doing laundry between the present time and the past. Now we don’t have to spend much time and energy for washing. This is only one example. Everything around us will be turned into a more convenient form, and being more convenient means “will be done faster”.
Such new technologies were thought to provide with a better life with more time to spare. Ironically, what we have now is a faster pace of life as a result of convenience because we are rushed to do more things faster every day. We no longer control the pace of life, but the pace of life gets a hold of us.
Sometimes, one particular thought comes to my mind. Is the present pace of life right for human beings? “The right pace of life for us” means “the pace of life God designs for us.” Don’t you think our life pace is much faster than what God planned according to our physical and mental capability?
We have studied the book of Proverbs, and in it, we can find the following scriptures:An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning will not be blessed at the end. (Proverbs 20:21) Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow. (Proverbs 13:11) A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him. (Proverbs 28: 22)
It is quite interesting that King Solomon wrote about “rushing to get something” as a warning in the Scripture. Here, he talked mainly about acquiring “fortune” and “wealth” in a hurry and warned us they would not bring fortune in the end, but rather they would diminish.
There was a story about a Japanese man who wrote a book titled “Earning 100 Million Yen a Second.” He is 32 years old and was actually making that much money, but recently he became bankrupt. He once appeared in the media to show off his richness, such as having his picture taken in front of his stacks of 300 million yen. With the bankruptcy, he had to sell his luxurious car, leave his house, and move out of his office which was located at a most prestigious area called Roppongi. After having lost everything he had, he wrote down the following: I have no desire for money any more. (Text partly omitted) I am happy that I am alive. I feel relieved since I don’t have to force myself to pretend to be rich any more. I was so tired of the life style I lived. I brainwashed myself by my own words I talked to the media. I got involved with female mates who were around me for my fame and money. I also escaped into drinking for a temporary relief from everything. During this whole month, day and night, I made actions trying to manage through the situation, and then I didn’t know if what I attempted to do was the right thing to do. After I repeated the same thing many times, I lost the sense of the principle of my behavior and finally I felt I came to my limitation.
This young man obtained a lot of money in a short period. Legally, he had no problem with it. However, I found his next comment quite interesting. When he lost everything, he said he was relieved because he didn’t have to force himself to pretend to be rich any more, or he lost the sense of the principle of his behavior and came to his limitation. Fortunately, he is still young, so he has plenty of time to start all over again.
He used the expressions such as “forced myself to” and “lost the sense of the principle of my behavior.” I believe what he meant was he lost the idea of what kind of pace he should have had for his work, living style, and the purpose of his life. I wonder if it’s only me to who thinks in this way. If we assume what I think is right, we can say King Solomon’s words, which were written 3000 years ago, are still valid. I consider the words, “money or wealth quickly gained” are relevant to “quickly gained knowledge”, “an experience acquired in a hurry”, and “the rapidly gained growth.”
Isaiah gave us the following well-known words in the book of Isaiah chapter 55. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declared the Lord. 9 As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
He says we don’t think in the same way the Lord thinks, and His way is much wiser than ours. It means His thoughts are superior to our thoughts. The following Scripture explains how His thoughts are different from ours:
10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. 12 You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. (Isaiah 55:8 – 12)
This part from the book of Isaiah describes the heaven and the earth. Products on the earth have to do with rain or snow from the heaven. Precipitation from the heaven above will wet the ground, and the seeds sown on the moist ground will sprout. The plants will grow and bear fruit which will eventually become our food.
God doesn’t rain tomatoes or green beans in order to feed us quickly. First, God sends rain or snow, which seems to have nothing to do with food that we need. It actually has an important role: to prepare the environment for crops to grow. We sow seeds; they sprout, and then bloom. There will be harvest time after the crops bear fruit. This is the process God designed for us to obtain food. As you can see, this process couldn’t be rushed. Rather, it is intended to take stages for the harvest.
It is also written “ so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty” As it is written, fulfilling God’s word is not an instant incident but there is a process to go through. It takes time to harvest. What we should remember is that God’s word does not return to him empty although it may take time to fulfill. This is the reason why God says that His thoughts are different from our thoughts or His ways are higher than our ways. In another words, the time we expect is different from the time according to God’s plans.
Recently, I read the book titled “12 lessens on life I learned from my garden” by Vivian Glyck. The reason why I bought this book was because the head line caught my eyes. It says “Everything happening in nature symbolizes something occurring in our mind. Since God created the law of the nature, it should be applied to our minds as well because we are created by God. We can learn about our mental matters from the law of nature.
While observing this world, we notice something. It is that we need to pay attention to somethings growing rapidly. For example, red tide in the ocean or the breeding of crown of thorns starfish, which eats all the coral, happen very rapidly. The sudden rise of the stock, land or house prices, called a “bubble”, and the quick success in a career are all welcome, but we should know that they become an obstacle that trips us over easily if we are not very careful.
Of course there are many things done over night in this world. However, when we look around the world God created, we find that most creatures take time to change, grow and increase.
Well, Solomon told us not to do anything in a hurry, but he also suggests another way of living. He wrote in Proverbs.(21:5) “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”
It says, “the plans of the diligent”. A person who wants an instant result doesn’t like the word “diligent” or “plan”. The word “diligent” and “plan” imply taking time and having to go through process. If I say it simply, “diligent” or “plan” means an attitude of working little by little. The Bible says that the diligent person becomes rich, but a person who is not becomes poor.
We may have watched the childbirth scene of a cow or a deer on T.V. We are amazed at the sight of a baby calf or a fawn trying to stand up soon after its birth. In several hours, they walk by themselves and start sucking their mothers’ milk. They start grazing eventually and are ready to have a baby when they become one and half years old. We don’t see a calf or a giraffe carried in a baby stroller. They need to stand up and walk as soon as possible so that they won’t become a prey for predators. This is the reason why God allows them grow quickly.
Then how about human child? A newborn baby can’t even turn over. He or she takes almost 20 years to become independent. God didn’t design a man to be able to run at the age of one and to be in love at three, to become independent at five, to marry at seven, to become a parent at nine and to retire at fifteen. Evidently we have a unique pace to grow at.
God didn’t create the world in one day. OF course He can do it because he is God. But He took six days to create it. Actually, He used seven days and made the seventh day for a rest. The resting day seems as important as the six working days. Why did He dare to take time? I think He wants to teach us something very important. The reason why God took time for creation is because He wants us to know that our life should be the long process of events before the end. That means it takes time.
The Bible doesn’t write only about incidents that happened in 100 years. But all incidents that happened in the world throughout the ages are recorded. The Bible is the record of the relationship between God and man beginning from Adam and Eve. When we start reading the Bible from the beginning, we notice that events in the Bible don’t get consequences instantly. Experiences include many failures and lessons from them, making man grow more mature step by step.
The story of God and Israel started from Abraham who is the father of the Israelites. He was seventy five years old when he was called by God. If God had been in a hurry, He could have called for Abraham when he was around thirty in order to make things work faster. But God took his time.
Moses learned of the imperial governance at the palace in Egypt for forty long years. He learned the good and bad parts of the Egyptian dynasty. For the next forty years, he lived quietly in the wilderness of Midian which was a totally different environment from the palace. Then he wandered in the wilderness for another forty years after having saved the Israelites from Egypt. We wonder if 120 years was really needed for him to accomplish the project. We think that 10 years of each period ,which is a total of thirty years, should be long enough. But brothers and sisters, God thoughts are quite different from our thoughts.
Disciples of Jesus didn’t have the intensive course of 8 hour a day for two weeks in order to become like him. Instead, they spent time with Jesus for discipleship for three and half years. Jesus was always with them even when they were awake or asleep. They watched everything from Jesus and learned from him.
It should have been easy if Jesus had appeared at the shore of the sea of Galilee all of the sudden without having the process of his birth or growing. It may be all right to leave out his first thirty years because it is not written about his young age in the Bible. But God didn’t hasten his plan, so God took time to have Jesus live in the public life.
God didn’t send Jesus at the time of Abraham or Elijah. He was born at the time God planned. There are 400 years between the last book of the old testament and the first book of the new testament. This period of time of 400 years was the time of silence and was a long dark night. However, the light of Jesus’ appearance shined especially in the darkness.
Watching the medium or long distance running race of field and track events, we always find some athletes dash out at the starting point. They are extraordinarily fast at the beginning. So we expect the new record. They can run at the top of the first group for one minute or three minutes at the most. Then one by one, they are left behind and finally become the last several runners. They even drop out from the race.
Don’t you see the same matter through our experiences? We have seen it since we were children . We have seen it at school, at work or at church. Brothers and sisters, evidently, our life is not a short distance running race. It is not a gambling or not a journey of ten meters distance either. No matter how powerful in the beginning, it is meaningless if it doesn’t continue. It doesn’t complete in one day but always continues to next day. Yes! If it is so, what we should do is not competing for records but completing our race.
Once in a while, our daily progress may be fast by a tail wind. But at times, we can’t go forward because of no wind at all. We may get lost or may choose the wrong way. We may walk holding someone. We may think that we are left behind because everyone goes forward. But the most important thing is to complete our race without going astray and to walk in the life the Lord guides us. Paul wrote in the second Timothy (4:5 -8)
“5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist,discharge all the duties of your ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
Paul engraved this fact in his heart. He knew that he didn’t live to fight the battle or to run or to keep faith for only one time. He said that he has fought the fight, has finished the race and has kept the faith. Yes. He meant he finished the race he should run. And he was looking forward to the day of receiving the crown of righteousness from the Lord.
What do you think? How is the pace of your life? Is the pace you have now the pace God designed for us? Do you try to grow in three days although it is supposed to take several years? (Especially, we, the parents, have to be careful not to ask children to grow too fast) Aren’t you involved with the pace in this world? Who is controlling your life? Do you judge your life by your fail or your success? It doesn’t matter whether you become a dropout or a winner once in a while because our life keeps going.
May we keep our pace that God designed for us. May we understand that we can’t reach to the crown of righteousness in one night. May we remember that our journey of faith doesn’t complete in a second but it needs to be pursued day by day. We have to keep walking everyday doing our best to come closer to the Lord. Let’s walk to the goal God prepares for us. Let’s pray.
