イエス様は、弟子作りの模範を通して、スモールグループとして集まることの重要性
を示してくださいました。イエス様が公のミニストリーを始められた時、イエス様は
何千人もの人々に奉仕されました。しかし、イエス様はそのほとんどの時間を１２人
の弟子たちと共に過ごしました。その１２人の中にあっても、ペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハ
ネの３人だけで過ごすこともありました。

イエス様は、この小さなグループに最も適した宣教ができることを知っておられ、ご自身の教えと生き方を彼らに教え込まれたのです。スモールグループの共同体として、私たちは互いに励まし合い、互いのために祈り合うことができます。これは人生で困難な時期に遭遇した時に特に当てはまります。

スモールグループの人々は、キリストの忠実な信者として、人生の様々な季節の浮き沈みを通して団結します。ですから、このスモールグループを強調する日曜日、私たちの励ましは、すべての人がキリストを中心とした安全で愛のあるコミュニティの一員となることです（本多）。

Small Group: Christ-Centered Safe and Loving Community
小グループ キリストを中心とした安全で愛のあるコミュニティ

This morning, I would like to begin by asking you a few questions. 今朝は、まず皆さんにいくつかの質問をしたいと思います。

Please respond by raising your hand if your answer is “yes”.　「はい」とお答えになる方は手を挙げてお答えください。

Do you know everyone who is in this Sanctuary this morning?　 今朝、この礼拝堂にいる全ての人を知っていますか？

Do you know most of the people who regularly come to our Sunday worship services?　 日曜日の礼拝にいつも来ているほとんどの人達を知っていますか？

Do you know these people really well?　 その人たちのことをよく知っていますか？

Do you consider some of these people as your close friends?　 この中の何人かを親しい友人だと思っていますか？

Did you get to know these close friends through being a part of a small group?　 スモール・グループの一員であることを通して、これらの親しい友人と知り合いになりましたか？

I asked these particular questions because today is our Small Group Emphasis Sunday.　 今日はスモールグループを強調する日曜日なので、私はこの特別な質問をしました。

From my own experience of having been a part of various churches for more than 50 years,　 ５０年以上、さまざまな教会に属してきた私の経験から言うと、

I can say that I have developed close relationships with people in the church through being together in a small group.　 スモールグループで一緒にいることで、教会の人々と親密な関係を築いてきました。

Did you know that in our church we have more than 20 small groups?　 私達の教会には２０以上のスモールグループがあることをご存知ですか？

There are many different types of small groups.　 スモールグループには色々な種類があります。

Some are held on Zoom, and others meet regularly in a home or at the church building.　 ズームで開催されるものもあれば、自宅や教会で定期的にもたれるものもあります。

Some small groups are age based (such as the Young Adult Group).　 あるスモールグループは年齢別です（ヤングアダルト・グループなど）。

Some are gender based (such as the Women’s Breakfast Fellowship).　 男女別のグループもあります（女性朝食会など）。

And some are location based (such as North Bible Study).　 また、場所ごとのものもあります（北部のバイブルスタディなど）。

Some small groups are geared more for new believers or people who are still not sure of what to make of Jesus Christ.　 スモールグループの中には、初心者の方や、まだイエス・キリストをどのように受け止めていいのか分からないという方向けのものもあります。

Some are centered around fellowship.　あるグループは交わりを中心としています。

Some are centered around Bible study.　 聖書の学びを中心とするものもあります。

Some are centered around prayer.　 祈りを中心とするものもあります。

Most small groups are either in Japanese or English, but some are bilingual.　 ほとんどのスモールグループは日本語か英語ですが、バイリンガルのグループもあります。

If you go to our church’s website and click on the “Grow with Us” tab, it will take you to a page that lists our church’s small groups.　当教会のホームページで「共に成長する」のタブをクリックすると、当教会のスモールグループの一覧ページが表示されます。

One of the first things you will see on that page is Acts 2:42, which says:　 そのページで最初に目にするのは、使徒行伝２章４２節です：

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.  そして一同はひたすら、使徒たちの教を守り、信徒の交わりをなし、共にパンをさき、祈をしていた。

​This describes the gathering of the Christians right after the day of Pentecost.　 これは、ペンテコステの直後のクリスチャンの集まりについて述べています。

These Christians often gathered in houses to study God’s word (the apostles’ teaching), fellowship, share a meal, and pray together.　 これらのクリスチャン達は、神の言葉（使徒達の教え）を学び、交わり、食事を共にし、共に祈るために、しばしば家々に集まっていました。

These are the very things that we also enjoy together in our church’s small groups.　　　 これらのことは、私達が教会のスモールグループでまさしく、共に楽しんでいることでもあります。

Thus, this morning, I would like to talk about the importance of small groups and encourage you to join one if you are not in one already.　 そこで今朝は、スモール・グループの大切さについてお話しし、まだスモール・グループに参加していない方には、ぜひ参加していただきたいと思います。

Let me first share with you our church’s vision and values for our small groups.　 まず、私たちのスモールグループに対する教会のビジョンと価値観をお話ししましょう。

Vision (What is our ministry): We provide opportunities for people to experience and participate in the community of believers in an intimate setting　ビジョン（私達のミニストリーは何か）：私たちは、人々が親密な環境で信仰者の共同体を体験し、参加する機会を提供します。

Values (How we accomplish our vision):　価値（どのようにビジョンを達成するか）

1. Fellowship: Strong relationships that impact the way we live and our relationship with God　交わり： 私たちの生き方や神との関係に影響を与える強い人間関係
2. Biblical Instruction: Learning together about who God is and how He wants us to live　聖書の教え： 神がどのようなお方で、私達にどのように生きることを望んでおられるかを共に学ぶ。
3. Prayer: Talking with God together　祈り： 共に神と語り合う
4. Mission: Making an impact in the world for Christ together and as individuals

使命：キリストのために、共に、また個人として、世界に影響を与える。

Thus, as you can see, small groups are wonderful communities in which we can learn, pray, serve, and grow together in our relationship with God. このように、スモールグループは、私たちが学び、祈り、奉仕し、神との関係の中で共に成長することができるすばらしい共同体なのです。

I think the following statement is a good reminder for what we hope the small groups to be. 次の言葉は、私たちがスモール・グループに望むことを気がつかせてくれる、いい言葉だと思います。

“The community we create is more important than the meetings we run.” 「私たちが作るコミュニティは、私たちが運営するミーティングよりも重要である」

This was shared by Nathan Haseley, one of our Christian Education Deacons, at our last Small Group Leaders Meeting. これは、クリスチャン教育執事の一人であるネイサン・ハセリーが、前回のスモールグループリーダーズミーティングで話してくれた言葉です。

So, you can see that small groups go beyond just the regular meetings that take place. このように、スモール・グループは単に定期的なミーティングを行うというだけのものではないのです。

The community that is created through the meetings is what enables us to truly care for and love one another on an ongoing basis. ミーティングを通じて生まれるコミュニティがあるからこそ、私たちは継続的にお互いを本当に思いやり、愛し合うことができるのです。

Please don’t get me wrong.  The meetings themselves are important as well. 誤解しないでほしいのですが、ミーティングそのものも大切です。

We are exhorted through Scripture to not neglect coming together for times of worship and small group gatherings. 私たちは聖書を通して、礼拝やスモールグループの集まりに集うことを怠らないようにと勧められているのです。

Hebrews 10:23-25

²³ Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; ²⁴ and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, ²⁵ not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ²³また、約束をして下さったのは忠実なかたであるから、わたしたちの告白する望みを、動くことなくしっかりと持ち続け、²⁴愛と善行とを励むように互に努め、²⁵ある人たちがいつもしているように、集会をやめることはしないで互に励まし、かの日が近づいているのを見て、ますます、そうしようではないか。

We are exhorted to not neglect assembling together, so that we can encourage one another. 私たちは、互いに励まし合うために、集まることを怠らないようにと勧められています。

And we are exhorted to do so all the more as the day of Jesus Christ’s return draws nearer.  そして、イエス・キリストの再臨の日が近づくにつれ、私たちはさらにそうするように勧められているのです。

Worship service is our corporate time together as a church family. 礼拝は、教会の家族として共に過ごす時間です。

This is where all of us can come together to worship God and hear God’s Word. そこは私たち全員が集まって神を礼拝し、神の御言葉を聞くことができる場所です。

However, the worship service is not the best place for us to develop close relationships in which to study the Bible together and pray for one another. しかし、礼拝は私たちが共に聖書を学び、互いのために祈り合う親密な関係を築くのに最適な場所ではありません。

Small groups allow us to do this.　 スモールグループでは、このようなことができるのです。

That is why we want everyone to be a part of such a group.　 だからこそ、私達はすべての人にそのようなグループの一員になってほしいと願っているのです。

We can learn the importance of coming together as a small group through Jesus’ example of discipleship.　私達はイエス様の弟子としての模範を通して、スモールグループとして集まることの重要性を学ぶことができます。

When Jesus began His public ministry, He ministered to thousands of people.　 イエス様が公のミニストリーを始められた時、イエス様は何千人もの人々に奉仕されました。

However, Jesus spent most of His time with His twelve disciples, which except for one of them later became His apostles.　 しかし、イエス様はそのほとんどの時間を１２人の弟子たちと共に過ごし、そのうちの一人を除いては、後に彼らはイエス様の使徒となりました。

Even with these twelve, He spent exclusive time on certain occasions with just Peter, James and John.　 その１２人の中にあっても、ペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネの３人だけで過ごすこともありました。

Jesus knew that He could best minister to this small group and instill in them His teaching as well as His way of living.　 イエス様は、この小さなグループに最も適した宣教ができることを知っておられ、ご自身の教えと生き方を彼らに教え込まれたのです。

We can see this special bond between Jesus and this small group in what is called the Upper Room discourse (John 13-17).　 イエス様とこの小さなグループとの特別な絆は、二階座敷での語り合い（ヨハネによる福音書１３−１７章）で見ることができます。

This section of Scripture written by the apostle John, who was one of the three closest disciples to Jesus, begins this way:　 イエス様に最も近い３人の弟子の一人であった使徒ヨハネによって書かれたこの聖句は、このように始まります：

John 13:1-5（ヨハネ書１３章１—５節）

¹ Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. ² During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, ³ Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, ⁴ got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. ⁵ Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. ¹過越の祭の前に、イエスは、この世を去って父のみもとに行くべき自分の時がきたことを知り、世にいる自分の者たちを愛して、彼らを最後まで愛し通された。²夕食のとき、悪魔はすでにシモンの子イスカリオテのユダの心に、イエスを裏切ろうとする思いを入れていたが、³イエスは、父がすべてのものを自分の手にお与えになったこと、また、自分は神から出てきて、神にかえろうとしていることを思い、⁴夕食の席から立ち上がって、上着を脱ぎ、手ぬぐいをとって腰に巻き、⁵それから水をたらいに入れて、弟子たちの足を洗い、腰に巻いた手ぬぐいでふき始められた。

From these five verses, we can learn a few things about Jesus’ time with His twelve specially chosen disciples.　 この５節から、私達はイエス様が特別に選ばれた１２人の弟子達と過ごした時間について、いくつかのことを学ぶことができます。

First of all, He loved these disciples to the end.  Which means He loved them completely.　 まず第一に、イエス様はこれらの弟子たちを最後まで愛されました。つまり、彼らを完全に愛されたということです。

Secondly, we see that this group was very close-knit; they were committed to and trusted each other.　 第二に、このグループが非常に緊密な絆で結ばれていたこと、彼らは互いに献身し、信頼し合っていたことがわかります。

The fact that, besides Jesus, none of the disciples knew of or suspected Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus, イエス様以外に、弟子達の誰もイスカリオテのユダがイエスを裏切ることを知りませんでしたし、疑っていなかったという事実は、

shows how much trust there was between all of them.　彼ら全員の間にどれほどの信頼関係があったかを示しています。

Third of all, we see that they shared meals together.　 第三に、彼らは食事を共にしました。

Jesus shared meals together with His disciples all the time.　 イエス様はいつも弟子たちと食事を共にされました。

Culturally, sharing meals together was a sign of a close and trusting relationship.　 文化として、食事を共にすることは親密な信頼関係の証でした。

For us today, it is the same, for it is often during meal times when we are able to open up to each other and share “life” together.　 現代の私達にとっても、それは同じで、私達が互いに心を開き、「人生」を共に分かち合うことができるのは、しばしば食事の時なのです。

For Jesus, this being His last supper that He would enjoy with His disciples before going to die on the cross, He did something special.　 イエス様にとって、十字架で死ぬ前に弟子たちと楽しむ最後の晩餐であるこの日、イエス様は特別なことをされました。

We see that Jesus washed His disciples’ feet.　 イエス様は弟子達の足を洗われたのです。

It was His way to show them how much He loved them.　 それはイエス様が弟子達をどれほど愛しているかを示すためでした。

It was also His way of showing them how they were to love and serve one another.　　　 それはまた、弟子達がどのように愛し合い、仕え合うべきかを示す方法でもありました。

Jesus used these times with His disciples to instruct them and teach them God’s Word and show them how to truly live for God and to love one another.　 イエス様は弟子達とのこうした時間を用いて、弟子たちを指導し、神の御言葉を教え、真に神のために生き、互いに愛し合う方法を示されたのです。

Through these five verses here at the beginning of what is known as the Upper Room Discourse, we can see the beauty of a Christ-centered small group.　 二階座敷の語り合いとして知られるこの５節の冒頭を通して、私達はキリストを中心とする小さなグループの素晴らしさを知ることができるのです。

We all need such a loving and intimate community, where we can learn and grow together in our knowledge of and love for Christ. 　 私達は皆、キリストを知り、キリストを愛することにおいて共に学び、成長することができ、このような愛に満ちた親密な共同体を必要としているのです。

We all need such a group.　 私たちは皆、そのようなグループを必要としているのです。

Just last month, I went to the Holiness Pastors’ Retreat which was held at a retreat center in Northern California.　 つい先月、私は北カリフォルニアのリトリート・センターで開催されたホーリネスの牧師たちのリトリートに行きました。

This annual retreat with the pastors of the Holiness Conference is a wonderful time for us to fellowship, pray, talk business, and encourage one another.　 年に一度、ホーリネス教団の牧師たちが集まるこのリトリートは、私たちが交わり、祈り、実務の話をし、互いに励まし合うための素晴らしい時間です。

This year’s retreat was attended by 28 pastors.　 今年の修養会には２８名の牧師が参加しました。

However, we broke into 6 small groups for more concentrated times of sharing and praying together.　 しかし、私たちは6つの小グループに分かれ、より集中的に分かち合い、共に祈りました。

I look forward to such times, because I can be myself.　 私はこのような時間を楽しみにしています。なぜなら、ありのままの自分でいられるからです。

We are all pastors, but we don’t have to necessarily be pastors with each other.　 私たちは皆、牧師ですが、必ずしも互いに牧師である必要はありません。

It is a safe and loving place in which we can share openly with one another.　 そこは互いにオープンに分かち合える、安全で愛に満ちた場所なのです。

We can share concerns with each other with understanding.　 私たちは理解し合いながら悩みを分かち合うことができるのです。

We can share the pains together of our pastoral failures and rejoice in the blessings of ministry we see in our churches.　 牧会の失敗の苦しみを共に分かち合い、教会で見られるミニストリーの祝福を喜び合うことができるのです。

If you have participated in Shuyokai or the Equipper Conference, I am sure you have experienced the blessing of being a part of a small group.　 修養会やイクイッパー・カンファレンスに参加された方は、スモール・グループの一員であることの祝福を経験されたことでしょう。

Well, the same applies to our church.　 私たちの教会も同じです。

Small groups are an integral part of the life of a church.　 スモール・グループは教会生活に欠かせないものです。

I have been blessed through the small groups that I am a part of with members of this church.　私は、この教会のメンバーと一緒に参加しているスモールグループを通して祝福を受けています。

Such times are so precious, and they are also safe and loving places for open sharing.　 このような時間はとても貴重で、オープンに分かち合うための安全で愛に満ちた場所でもあります。

It is at these times that we get to share our joys and sorrows, struggles and victories with one another.　 このような時、私たちは喜びや悲しみ、葛藤や勝利を分かち合うことができるのです。

Hearing the testimonies of how God is at work in each small group members’ lives is such an encouragement.　 それぞれのスモールグループのメンバーの人生に神がどのように働いておられるかの証しを聞くことは、とても励みになります。

Learning the insights and thoughts that each member shares as we study the Bible together is also such a blessing.　 また、聖書を共に学ぶ中で、各メンバーが分かち合う洞察や考えを学ぶことも大きな祝福となります。

As a small group community, we are able to encourage one another and pray for one another.　 スモールグループの共同体として、私たちは互いに励まし合い、互いのために祈り合うことができます。

This is especially true when we encounter difficult times in our lives.　 これは人生で困難な時期に遭遇した時に特に当てはまります。

As Padres fans stick together through the ups-and-downs of a baseball season as the “Friar Faithful”,　 パドレスのファンが「Friar Faithful」として野球シーズンの浮き沈みを通して団結するように、

those in small groups stick together through the ups-and-downs of the various seasons of life as Christ’s faithful followers.　 スモールグループの人々は、キリストの忠実な信者として、人生の様々な季節の浮き沈みを通して団結します。

These are times in which we can grow together in Christ.　 このような時こそ、キリストにあって共に成長できる時なのです。

Indeed, as we will be singing a little later as our song of response, it is in these small group communities that we truly learn “More About Jesus”.　 実際、この後、応答の歌で歌われるように、私達が本当に「イエス様についてより深く」学ぶのは、こうしたスモールグループの共同体の中で起こるのです。

We get to see and celebrate that growth together.　 私たちはその成長を共に見、祝うことができるのです。

This morning, we are blessed to hear some personal testimonies from those who are a part of such groups in our church.　 今朝は、私たちの教会でそのようなグループに属している人たちの個人的な証しを聞くことができました。

As you hear these testimonies, I hope you will prayerfully consider joining a small group, if you are not part of one already.　 これらの証しを聞きながら、もしまだスモール・グループに加わっていないなら、祈りを持って参加することを検討してほしいと願います。

You will enjoy the blessings of being a part of a Christ-Centered safe and loving community.　 きっと皆さんはキリストを中心とした安全で愛に満ちた共同体の一員であることの祝福を味わうことができるでしょう。
