私達は思います。牧師や神学者は、あるいは教会生活が長い人は神についてよく知っていると。
確かに私達はイエス・キリストについてよく知っています。しかし、大切なことは私達が「イエス・キリストを知っている」のか、それとも「イエス・キリストについて知っている」のかということなのです。信仰がなくともイエス・キリストについて知ることはできます。しかし、そのこととイエス・キリストを個人的に知るということは全く違う話なのです。
イエスと共に十字架に磔にされた犯罪人はイエスの弟子達、宗教学者よりもイエスをよく理解していました・・・・。

新しい出発（７）：「イエスについて」ではなく「イエスを」知りたい

４月となり、私達はこれから受難週に向かいます。そこで今日は主の十字架に心を向け、４月１７日のイースターに備えたいと思います。
イエス・キリストが十字架にかけられ、そのところで語られた言葉が七つあります。今日はその七つの言葉の中の一つに注目したいと願っております。ルカ２３章３４節から４５節までを拝読します。
そのとき、イエスは言われた、「父よ、彼らをおゆるしください。彼らは何をしているのか、わからずにいるのです」。人々はイエスの着物をくじ引きで分け合った。35民衆は立って見ていた。役人たちもあざ笑って言った、「彼は他人を救った。もし彼が神のキリスト、選ばれた者であるなら、自分自身を救うがよい」。36兵卒どももイエスをののしり、近寄ってきて酢いぶどう酒をさし出して言った、37「あなたがユダヤ人の王なら、自分を救いなさい」。38イエスの上には、「これはユダヤ人の王」と書いた札がかけてあった。39十字架にかけられた犯罪人のひとりが、「あなたはキリストではないか。それなら、自分を救い、またわれわれも救ってみよ」と、イエスに悪口を言いつづけた。40もうひとりは、それをたしなめて言った、「おまえは同じ刑を受けていながら、神を恐れないのか。41お互は自分のやった事のむくいを受けているのだから、こうなったのは当然だ。しかし、このかたは何も悪いことをしたのではない」。42そして言った、「イエスよ、あなたが御国の権威をもっておいでになる時には、わたしを思い出してください」。43イエスは言われた、「よく言っておくが、あなたはきょう、わたしと一緒にパラダイスにいるであろう」。44時はもう昼の十二時ごろであったが、太陽は光を失い、全地は暗くなって、三時に及んだ。45そして聖所の幕がまん中から裂けた（ルカ２３章３４節―４５節）。
そうです、今日、注目したい言葉はイエス様が言われた「よく言っておくが、あなたは今日、わたしと一緒にパラダイスにいるであろう」（ルカ２３章４３節）という言葉です。
世界には多くの伝記がありますが、その多くのページを割いて主人公の死を書いているものは、ほとんどありません。Ｍ・ＬキングやＭ・ガンジーのように暴力に倒れ、政治的、人道的意義のある最後を迎えた人達の伝記にもそれは共通しています。しかし、福音書はイエス・キリストの生涯のクライマックスである最後の一週間のためにその書の約三分の一を割いています。こんな伝記はまずありません。
死は人生の終わりであり、できることなら、それから目をそむけようと私達は思います。
それよりも人の一生で成し遂げた功績ばかりに目がいくのが私達であるのに、なぜ、聖書はこんなに多くのページをイエスの死に割いているのでしょうか。
ゴルゴダの丘においてイエス様は手と足首に釘が打たれました。ローマの総督ピラトはその十字架のてっぺんにヘブル語、ラテン語、ギリシア語で｢ユダヤ人の王｣という罪状書きをつけました（ヨハネ１９章２０節）。
これを見たユダヤ人の祭司長たちが憤慨してピラトに言いました。「ユダヤ人の王と書かずに、この人はユダヤ人の王と自称していたと書いて欲しい」と。
イエスと同じユダヤ人にとって、同族から呪いの象徴である十字架に架けられる者が起こるということほど侮辱的なことはありません。ましてや、そんな醜態をさらしている者が自分達の王などということは耐えられないということでありましょう。
ピラトには「所詮、お前達は奴隷の民族なのだから、こんな王で十分なのだ」というようなユダヤ人に対する嘲笑があったのでしょう。ゆえにピラトはその罪状書きを変えるのを拒否しました。ピラトはそのことで騒ぎたっているユダヤ人を眺めることを喜んでいたのかもしれません。
しかし、皮肉です。誰が想像していたでしょうか。 罪状書きに書かれたへブル、ラテン、ギリシアの言葉はまさしく当時の世界を象徴する言語でした。
へブル語は当時の宗教言語であり、ラテン語は法律言語、ギリシア語は哲学・芸術の言語であり、これらの言葉は世界の言語を象徴していました。今日、聖書は世界中において幾千もの言葉に翻訳されており、イエス・キリストの十字架の意味は世界中に知れ渡っているのです。
十字架を取り囲む人たちは口々にイエス様をあざ笑って言いました。「彼は他人を救った。もし、彼が神のキリスト、選ばれたものであるなら、自分自身を救うがよい」（３５）。兵卒どもはイエスを罵り言いました。 「あなたがユダヤ人の王なら、自分を救いなさい」（ルカ２３：３７）
不思議なことに彼らは、イエス様が他人を救ったということは認めたのです。そして、他人を救うのなら自分も救えるだろうと言ったのです。友人の車のパンクを修理しておいて、自分の車のタイヤの修理をしない人はいません。
しかし、イエスは自らを救うことをなさらず、人々の目に映っているイエス様の姿はイザヤがかつて預言したように、『彼にはわれわれの見るべき姿がなく、威厳もなく、われわれの慕うべき美しさもない』（イザヤ５３章２節）というようなものでありました。
そして、このイエス・キリストを間近で見ていた二人の人がいました。そうです、イエス様の右と左には二人の犯罪人が同じように十字架につけられていました。
彼らが何をしたのか聖書は細かく書いていません。しかし、明らかに分かることは彼らが極刑に値するような重大犯罪を犯したということでありました。
このように彼らの十字架とイエス様の十字架が計、三本並んでゴルゴダの丘に立っていたことも、まさしく預言者イザヤが預言したとおりの光景でした。
｢彼が死にいたるまで、自分の魂を注ぎ出し、とが（罪）ある者と共に数えられたからである。しかも彼は多くの人の罪を負い、とが（罪）ある者のためにとりなしの祈りをした｣（イザヤ５３章１２節）。
この言葉は確かに成就しました。そうです、イエス様はこの二人同様に罪人としてカウントされたのです。
マルコ伝を見ると（１５章３２節）最初のうち、この二人の強盗は共に十字架の回りにいた祭司長、律法学者、兵卒、民衆たちと同じようにイエスを罵っていたようです。
彼らは耐え難い痛みの極致におり、そのような状況にある時に、人はえげつない言葉を発するものです。
その時、イエスを十字架の下より罵り，笑いを浴びせる者，イエスに鞭打ちをする者、唾を書ける者達がいました。しかし、イエス様は彼らのために十字架の上で神に祈りました。｢彼らをお許し下さい。彼らは何をしているのか分からずにいるのです｣
そのイエス様の言葉や姿を間近に見聞きした二人のうち、一人の犯罪人の心に変化が生じました。
一人の犯罪人が「あなたはキリストではないか。それなら、自分を救い、また我々も救ってみよ」（ルカ２３章３９節）とイエス様を罵りました。 それに対して、もう一人はそれをたしなめて言いました。
「おまえは同じ刑を受けていながら、神を恐れないのか、お互いは自分のやったことの報いを受けているのだからこうなったのは当然だ。しかし、このお方は何も悪いことをしたのではない」（ルカ２３章４０節、４１節）
そして彼はイエス様に向かいこう言ったのです。「あなたが御国の権威をもっておいでになるときには私を思い出してください」（ルカ２３章４２節）
この時、この犯罪人の目がひらかれたのです。すなわち自分が今、ここで十字架にはりつけにされているということは自分がしたことの報いだが、このお方には十字架にかかる理由がないということに目が開かれたのです。
彼は自分と同じように磔にされているイエス様を間近に見ながら考えていたに違いありません。このお方は何者なのか。自分を罵り、嘲笑し、唾をかけ、むち打ち、十字架にかける者たちを赦してくださいと祈る、このような方は何者でなければならないのか・・・。
彼はそこでイエス様のたとえ話や教えを聞いたわけでもないのです。イエス様がなされた多くの奇跡を見たのでもないのです。しかし、彼は悟りました。このお方は御国の権威を持っておられるお方なのだということを。
皆さん、思いませんか、牧師や神学者は当然、神様のことをよく知っていると。あるいは教会生活が長い人は神様についてよく知っていると。
確かに牧師や信徒はイエス・キリストについてよく知っています。確かにそうでありましょう。しかし、気をつけなければならないことは、それは「イエス・キリストを知っている」ということなのか、それとも「イエス・キリストについて知っている」ということなのかということなのです。
信仰がなくともイエス・キリストについて知ることはできます。 しかし、イエス・キリストを個人的に知るということはそれとはまた違う話なのです。
聖書には『また、聖霊によらなければ、だれも「イエスは主である」と言うことができない』（Ⅰコリント１２章３節）という言葉があります。
そうです、私達が「イエスは主である」という信仰の告白をするということは私達に悟る力があったとか、多くの時間をこのことのために割いたからだということではなくて、その時に聖霊がはたらかれて、私達にそのことを示してくださったということなのです。
ですから、このことに従いますと、もしかしたら神様のみ心を本当によく分かっている人とは講壇に立っている者ではなくて、今日、サンデースクールでイエス様のお話しをきいた幼子なのかもしれません。
その証拠にこの死ぬ間際の犯罪人はユダヤ人の指導者や弟子たちよりもよくイエス・キリストを理解し、イエスを神の子と信じたのです。
まさしく『このように、あとの者は先になり、先の者はあとになるであろう』（マタイ２０章１６節）という言葉がその時に起こったのです。 そして、このことは今もこの世界で起きているのです。
この犯罪人が「あなたが御国の権威をもっておいでになるときには私を思い出してください」（ルカ２３章４２節）と言ったすぐ後、イエス様はすかさず言いました。「よく言っておくが、あなたはきょう、わたしと一緒にパラダイスにいるであろう」。（ルカ２３章４３節）
かってイエス様は自分の弟子たちとこんなことを話しました。 ｢私の父の家には住まいがたくさんある。もし、なかったならば、そう言っておいたであろう。あなたがたのために場所を用意しに行くのだから｣（ヨハネ１４：２）。
よく考えてみますと、このイエス様が備えてくださった父の家に一番先に入居したのはこの罪人だったのです。主にある皆さん、この信仰の告白をした犯罪人と同様に、もう一人の犯罪人もイエス・キリストの間近にいたということに目を留めましょう。
しかし、彼も同じものを見、同じことを聞きながら、その受け止め方が全く異なりました。このことも実際に私達の世界で日々、起きていることなのです。
イエス様の言葉を感動と共に聞く者もおれば、隣りで退屈して欠伸をしている人もいる、残念ながらそれが私達の現実なのです。そして、その違いは大きいのです。その日、主と共にパラダイスにいるか否かということなのですから。
死ぬ間際の男がその日の内にパラダイスに招かれたということはとても厳粛なことであると同時に驚きです。この犯罪人は既に手足が釘づけにされていますから自分の業による救いは不可能です。善行をしようにもまさしく手足は動かず、確実に彼の体は死に向かっています。しかし、イエス・キリストはこの者に言ったのです。
そうです、聞き逃すことがないように、よく聞きなさい、私は確かなる思いで今、あなたに告げることがあると言わんばかりにイエス様は「あなたはきょう、わたしと一緒にパラダイスにいるであろう」（ルカ２３章４３節）と宣言されたのです。
この男は死ぬ間際にイエス様を信じ、驚くべきことにキリストの民として一番、最初にパラダイスに行ったのです。主にある兄弟姉妹、どうぞこのことを心に刻んで今日はお帰りください。
この男はこの世にこれ以上、生きることを禁じられた男です。この世に生きる価値がないと判断された男です。名すら記されていないこの犯罪人がパラダイスに招かれた最初の人なのです。ここに神の私達に対する人知を超えたメッセージがあるのです。
イエス様がこの地で神の国を伝え始めたとき、イエス様は自分の周りにいる者たちに、その教えを伝えました。多くの者達はそれを心に受け入れ、多くの者達は心を閉ざしました。
心を閉ざした者達の中にはたくさんの律法学者やパリサイ人と呼ばれる宗教家、町の指導者達がおり、反対にイエス様の教えを心に受け入れた者達には多くのならず者、露骨に罪人と呼ばれている者達がおりました。
そして、イエス様の最期もまさしく、そのように終わりました。そうです、世から裁かれ、行き場を失った犯罪人だけがイエス様に心を開いたのです。
もし，救いが人間の善行によって得られるものであったなら、この囚人には救いの余地はなかったでしょう。しかし、そんな彼でさえも，主の憐れみにすがる時に、その罪を悔いて告白する時に救を得るのです。これが神の恵みなのです。
今、流行している歌謡曲は数か月経てば、新しい歌にとって代わると言います。しかし、主を賛美する歌は何十年と歌われ続けている。あのアメージンググレースという歌にいたっては、かって奴隷商人をしていたジョン・ニュートンが１７７２年に作った歌であります。
「驚くばかりの恵みなりき、この身の汚れを知れる我に」
神の私達に対する驚くべき恵みは年月を超えても変わらず、その恵みに応答する賛美が古びてしまうことはないのです。キリストの十字架はいつも私達の失敗に目を光らせているというような神観から、神は私達のためには自らの命をも放棄するほどに私達を完全に愛しておられるお方なのだという神に対する定義を変えたのです。
これまで度々、この犯罪人について誤解がなされてきました。そうです、こういうことです。「そうか、そうかそれならば、私もこの恵みは自分の最後の時に延期しておこう。息途切れるその時にイエスを受け入れよう」。
主にある皆さん、本当にイエス様が自分のために何をしてくださったのかを知る者が、どうしてこのようなことができましょうか。そう言えるということは、すなわちイエス様の十字架がまだ分かっていないということなのです。
私達は聖書の言うところの勧めに従うべきです。聖書は既にこう書いているではありませんか。「今日，あなたがみ声を聞いたなら，荒野における試練の日に，神にそむいた時のように、あなたがたの心を、かたくなにしてはいけない。」（へブル３章７－８）
皆さん、イエスの生涯の最後の友は犯罪人でした。しかも、そのなしたことゆえに死刑により息途切れる直前の犯罪人だったのです。
イエス・キリストの最後がこの男と共にあり、その最も惨めな立場にある人間が神のみもとへ行ったということはキリストの救いの力はどんな状況にいる人々の間にもはたらくのだという神の思いを示していませんでしょうか。
今朝、皆さんの中で私とキリストは何の関わりもないと思っている方がいますでしょうか。私などはクリスチャンになれないと思っている方いるでしょうか。もう説明するまでもありませんね。あなたのことも今朝、キリストは招いておられるということを！
このイエスの救いをもう既に受け入れている方々。今朝、もう一度確認しましょう。私たちの救いは、ただ神の恵みによる。自分で勝ち取ったものではないということを。
イエスがその愛のゆえに、あの十字架から下りることなく、その赦しの愛を私たちのために全うしてくださったゆえに、私たちの救いはあるということを。
そして、その恵みに応えて生きてくのが私達の人生の原動力であるということを。｢見よ、今は恵みの時、見よ、今は救いの日である｣（Ⅱコリント６章２節）
私たちは「新しい出発」というシリーズを毎週、礼拝でお話ししております。主イエス・キリストにあって、神の子とされて、新しい人生を生き直す。これ以上の新しい出発がありますでしょうか。
この思いが心の中にあるという方がおりましたらお声をおかけください。善は急げ、そのために備えようではありませんか。その決断は私達にとりまして人生最大の決断なのですから。そう、それは今日、私達がパラダイスにいるのか、そのことを決める決断なのです。お祈りしましょう。
The New Beginning (7): I want “to know Jesus” not “to know about him”.

It is April and we are heading into Passion Week. So today we would like to prepare for Easter coming up on April 17 by focusing on the cross of the Lord.
There are seven words spoken at the place where Jesus Christ was crucified. Today we wish to focus on one of those seven words. Let’s read from Luke 23:34-45.
34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[c] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last (Luke 23:34-45).
Yes, the words we want to focus on today are Jesus’ words, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43).
There are many biographies in the world, but few devote so many pages to the death of their protagonist. The same is true of the biographies of people like Martin Luther King and M. Gandhi, who fell to violence and met ends of political and humanitarian significance.
But the Gospel devotes about a third of its book to the climax of Jesus Christ’s life, the last week. Such a biography is rare. Death is the end of life, and we try to turn away from it if we can.
Why does the Bible devote so many pages to the death of Jesus when we are more interested in the accomplishments of a person’s lifetime?
On the hill of Golgotha, Jesus had nails driven into His hands and ankles. Pilate, the Roman governor, wrote on the top of the cross in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, “King of the Jews” (John 19:2). When the Jewish chief priests saw this, they were outraged and told Pilate.
I wish you would not write, ‘King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man called himself the King of the Jews.'”
For Jews, like Jesus, there is nothing more insulting than the idea of someone from their own people being crucified as a symbol of a curse. Even more so, they would not be able to bear the thought of such an abomination as their king.
Pilate must have had a sneer at the Jews, saying, “You are a people of slaves after all, and a king like this is enough for you.” Therefore, Pilate refused to change the written notice. Pilate may have been happy to see the Jews in an uproar over it.
But the irony. Who would have guessed? The Hebrew, Latin, and Greek words on the written notice were the very languages that symbolized the world of the time.
Hebrew was the religious language of the time, Latin was the language of law, and Greek was the language of philosophy and art, and these languages represented the languages of the world.
Today, the Bible has been translated into thousands of languages throughout the world, and the meaning of the cross of Jesus Christ is known throughout the world. The people surrounding the cross mocked Jesus, saying
“He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(35)
The soldiers cursed Jesus and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” (Luke 23:37).
Curiously, they did acknowledge that Jesus saved others. They then said that if he could save others, he should be able to save himself. No one repairs a flat tire on a friend’s car and not repair the tire on their own car.
But Jesus did not save Himself, and His image in the eyes of the people was as Isaiah once prophesied,”He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.” (Isaiah 53:2).
And there were two people who were watching Jesus Christ closely during this time.Yes, to the right and left of Jesus, there were two criminals who were crucified in the same way.
The Bible does not detail what they did. But what is clear is that they had committed serious crimes that deserved capital punishment.
The criminal’s crosses and Jesus’ cross stood side by side on the hill of Golgotha, just as the prophet Isaiah had prophesied.
He poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.
These words were indeed fulfilled. Yes, Jesus was counted as a sinner, as were these two. Looking at the book of Mark (15:32), it seems that at first, these two criminals were cursing Jesus, as were the chief priests, scribes, soldiers, and the others who were around the cross.
They were in the extreme of unbearable pain, and people speak of obscene things when they are in such a situation. At that time, there were those who cursed Jesus from the foot of the cross, those who laughed at Him, those who flogged Him, and those who would spit on Him. But Jesus prayed to God on the cross for them.
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”.
One of the two criminals who saw and heard Jesus’ words and appearance up close had a change of heart at this moment. One criminal said, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” (Luke 23:39) and cursed Jesus.
The other one rebuked him and said, “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
And he turned to Jesus and said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
At this point, the eyes of this criminal were opened. His eyes were opened to the fact that he was being crucified here as a punishment for what he had done, but that this man had no reason to be crucified.
He must have been thinking as he looked closely at Jesus, who was being crucified just like him: Who is this man?
Who must this person be who prays for the forgiveness of those who curse, ridicule, spit on, whip, and crucify him…?
He did not hear Jesus’ parables or teachings there, nor did he see the many miracles Jesus performed. But he realized then that He is the One who has the authority of the Kingdom.
Don’t you all think, of course, that pastors and theologians know a lot about God? Or that those who have been in the church for a long time know a lot about God?
Certainly, pastors and believers know a lot about Jesus Christ. That is certainly true.But what we must be careful about is whether that means they “know Jesus Christ” or “know about Jesus Christ”.
You can know about Jesus Christ without having faith. But knowing Jesus Christ personally is a different story.
The Bible says, “And no one can say, “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit” (I Cor. 12:3). Our confession of faith that “Jesus is Lord” is not because we had the power to realize it or because we devoted much time to it, but because the Holy Spirit was working to show it to us.
Therefore, according to this, perhaps the person who truly knows God’s will may not be the one standing at the pulpit, but may be the little child who heard Jesus’ story at Sunday School today.
The evidence to this is that this dying criminal understood Jesus Christ better than the Jewish leaders and disciples and truly believed in Jesus as the Son of God. The very words, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (Matthew 20:16), occurred at that time. And this is still happening in the world today.
Immediately after this criminal said, ” remember me when you come into your kingdom. ” (Luke 23:42), Jesus quickly said. “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”(Luke 23:43)
Jesus once talked about this with his disciples. 2 “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?”
If you think about it, it was this sinner who was the first to move into the Father’s house that Jesus prepared for him. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, let us note that like the criminal who made this confession of faith, the other criminal was also close to Jesus Christ during this time.
However, although he saw and heard the same things, he received them in very different ways. This is also something that actually happens in our world every day.
Some people listen to Jesus’ words with excitement, while others that are sitting next to these people are bored and absent-minded. And the difference is significant, and decides whether or not you will be in Paradise with the Lord that day.
It is both very solemn and amazing that a dying man was invited to Paradise on that day. This criminal has already had his hands and feet nailed to the cross, so salvation by his own works is impossible.
His limbs were immobilized and his body was nearing death. But Jesus Christ said to this man, Yes, listen carefully, lest you miss it, for I have something to tell you now with certainty, Jesus said, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43).
This man believed in Jesus as he was dying, and amazingly was the first of Christ’s people to go to Paradise.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord, please take this to heart as you leave today. This is a man forbidden to live any longer in this world. This is a man who has been judged unworthy of living in this world.This criminal, whose name is not even written, was the first person to be invited to Paradise.
Here, God has left a message to us that is beyond human understanding.
When Jesus began to preach about the Kingdom of God, he shared his teachings with those around him. Many accepted it in their hearts, while many closed theirs.
Among those who closed their hearts were many religious leaders and town leaders called scribes and Pharisees, while among those who accepted Jesus’ teachings in their hearts were many criminals and outright sinners. And that is exactly how Jesus’ life on Earth ended.
Yes, only criminals who had been judged by the world and had nowhere else to go opened their hearts to Jesus.
If salvation were to be obtained by man’s good deeds, there would be no room for salvation for this prisoner. But even he could earn salvation when he repented and confessed his sins as he clung to the Lord’s mercy. This is God’s grace.
We say that the songs that are popular now will be replaced by new ones after a few months. But songs praising the Lord have been sung for decades. The song Amazing Grace was written in the 1772 by John Newton, a former slave trader.

God’s amazing grace toward us remains the same through the years, and the praise in response to that grace never grows old.
The cross of Christ changed the definition of God from being someone that is always looking for our failures to one in which God loves us so completely that he would even give up his own life for us.
There have often been misconceptions about this criminal. Yes, this is what it means: “Well, well then, I too shall defer this grace to my last hour. I will accept Jesus at the time I lose my breath.”
People in the Lord, how can we do this, when we truly knows what Jesus has done for us? To be able to say so, in other words, is to say that you do not yet understand the cross of Jesus. We should follow the recommendation of what the Bible says. Does not the Bible already say this?
7 So, “Today, if you hear his voice, 8do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness,’(Hebrew 3:7-8).
Jesus’ last friend in life was a criminal. Additionally, he was a criminal who, because of what he had done, was about to be put to death.
Doesn’t the fact that Jesus Christ’s last moments were with this man, and that a man in the most miserable position went to be with God, show us that the saving power of Christ can work among people in any situation?
I wonder if any of you this morning think that Christ has nothing to do with yourself. Do any of you think that you cannot be a Christian?
I no longer have to explain it to you. Christ is inviting you, too, this morning! Those who have already accepted this salvation of Jesus. Let’s confirm this again this morning.
Our salvation is solely by God’s grace. It is not something we won over on our own. That our salvation is because Jesus, because of His love, did not come down from that cross, but fulfilled His forgiving love for us.
And that the driving force of our lives is to live in response to that grace. I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2).
Over the past couple of weeks, we have gone over a series called “New Beginnings” in our worship services. In the Lord Jesus Christ, we are made children of God and live a new life. What better new beginning could there be?
If any of you have this thought in your heart, please let us know. Let us begin to prepare for it, for good is haste. It is the biggest decision we will ever make in our lives. Yes, it is the decision that will determine whether we are in Paradise today. Let us pray.

３）預言者イザヤは十字架上のイエス様の姿についてその７５０年前に預言をしていました。イザヤ５３章２節、１２節からイエス様のどんな姿が分かりますか。
４）イエス様は二人の犯罪人と共に十字架にかけられました。当初、二人共にイエス様を罵っていましたが、その一人の心に変化が生まれました（ルカ２３章４０節―４２節）。なぜ彼の心は変えられたのですか。彼は何を見、何を聞き、何を考えたのでしょうか。
５）この犯罪人の言葉を受けてイエス様は「よく言っておくが、あなたはきょう、わたしと一緒にパラダイスにいるであろう」（ルカ２３章４３節）と言いました。このことになぜ私達は驚くのですか。
６）十字架を眺めていた者達の中には律法学者やパリサイ人がいました。彼らは神について学び、敬虔な信仰者と見られていました。その彼らよりもこの犯罪人はイエスのことをよく理解しました。このことはあなたにどんな思いを与えますか。
７）「イエス・キリストについて知る」ということと「イエス・キリストを知る」ということの違いは何ですか。
