日本の作家、遠藤周作さんが書き、映画にもなった彼の代表作「沈黙」の中に、主人公であるロドリゴ神父のこんなセリフがあります。
『私がその愛を知るためには、今日までのすべてが必要だったのだ』
東方の博士は星や天体を調べ、それを拝む信仰をもつ者たちでした。このことに関しては彼らの信仰は聖書の神に対する信仰とは異なります。しかし、彼らは異国で自らの生業としていた占星術を通して、イエス・キリストに出会ったのです。もっと言いますと、一見、イエス・キリストとは無関係なことに思われることが、イエスを知るきっかけとなったのです。そのことがイエスに会うために不可欠なものとなったのです。この言葉には、私達が過去に経験したことがいかなることであっても、それはイエス様の愛を知るために必要なものになりうるのだというメッセージがあります・・・。（大倉）

東方の博士：イエス・キリストに出会うまでの道のり

１１月最後の日曜日となりました。今日からアドベントが始まります。教会ではこれから毎日曜日、一本ずつローソクを灯し、クリスマスを待ち望みます。これからクリスマスまで、世界中の教会で日曜日ごとにイエス・キリストの誕生が語られることでしょう。このキリストの誕生に関わった人たちが聖書には記録されていますが、今日はその中から東方の博士に注目したいと思います。まず、最初にそのテキストとなるマタイ２章１節－１２節を拝読させていただきます。
マタイ２章１節－１２節
１イエスは、ヘロデ王の時代にユダヤのベツレヘムでお生まれになった。その時、占星術の学者たちが東の方からエルサレムに来て、２言った。「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。」３これを聞いて、ヘロデ王は不安を抱いた。エルサレムの人々も皆、同様であった。４王は民の祭司長たちや律法学者たちを皆集めて、メシアはどこに生まれることになっているのかと問いただした。５彼らは言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者がこう書いています。６『ユダの地、ベツレヘムよ、お前はユダの指導者たちの中で決していちばん小さいものではない。お前から指導者が現れ、わたしの民イスラエルの牧者となるからである。』」７そこで、ヘロデは占星術の学者たちをひそかに呼び寄せ、星の現れた時期を確かめた。８そして、「行って、その子のことを詳しく調べ、見つかったら知らせてくれ。わたしも行って拝もう」と言ってベツレヘムへ送り出した。９彼らが王の言葉を聞いて出かけると、東方で見た星が先立って進み、ついに幼子のいる場所の上に止まった。１０学者たちはその星を見て喜びにあふれた。１１家に入ってみると、幼子は母マリアと共におられた。彼らはひれ伏して幼子を拝み、宝の箱を開けて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物として献げた。１２ところが、「ヘロデのところへ帰るな」と夢でお告げがあったので、別の道を通って自分たちの国へ帰って行った。
ここには東の国から来たという博士が登場します。彼らは東の国の占星術の学者で、天文学や数学の知識に富んでいる当時の知識人でした。この博士たちがやって来た東の国とはどこを表わすのでしょうか。
多くの学者は、それはかつてユーフラテス川に栄えたバビロンがあった地方ではないかといいます。このバビロンはその後、ペルシアとなり、その地域には今日のイランやイラクがあります。これらの国々が今、クリスチャニティーに対して、どのように対峙しているかということを私たちは知っています。そのことを思う時に、彼らの先祖がかつてイエス・キリストの誕生を求めて旅したということに、神の深い摂理を思います。
彼らの仕事は星の動きを研究して、そこから未来を占うということでした。当時、占星術は国家の盛衰や王家の吉凶を占うために用いられていたのです。彼らはこのことのために、壮大な宇宙を研究していました。
植物学者ならその植物を手に取ることできるでしょう。しかし、彼らの研究の対象は星や月ですから、その現場に行くこともできず、当然、それを手にとって触れることなどできませんでした。彼らはただそれらを遠くから観察することだけが許されていたのです。
彼らはそこに秩序ある星の動きを見いだしたことでしょう。「秩序」の背後には「知性」となるものが必要です。秩序はデタラメなもの、偶然からは生まれないからです。そう、彼らが探求していることは、自ずと神々への崇拝となりました。当時、バビロンでは星や惑星を通して神々の託宣を受け取ることができると信じられ、宇宙は神聖な場所と考えられていました。
日本の歌手にさだまさしという人がいます。この方の歌にアフリカで実際に医療活動にあたっていた日本人医師のことを歌った「風に立つライオン」という名曲があります。その歌の中に「この偉大な自然の中で病に向かいあえば、神様について人について考えるものですね」という歌詞があります。人は壮大な自然に向き合う時に、そして肉体の限界と向き合う時に、自分よりも遥かに大きな存在について考えます。このことゆえに人類は自分よりも大きな存在を感じ取り、その存在に対する畏怖の思いから、諸々の神々を創作し、それを崇拝の対象としてきたのです。東方の博士たちが日々、眺めていたものは広大な宇宙に浮かぶ星であり、彼らはそこに神の存在を認めていたのです。
現代を生きる私達の頭上にも無数の星があります。しかし、私達にとりまして博士達のように星は身近なものではなくなりました。そもそも私たちの暮らす街は、夜になっても明るすぎて星が見えないのです。私達は夜な夜なブルーライトに照らされるスクリーンばかりを覗き込んでいて、誰も夜空を眺めようとは思わないのです。星は星でも、私達はYelpやミシェランの星の数ばかり気にしているのです。
主にある皆さん、日々、色々な悩みがありますでしょう。時には外に出て夜空を眺めてみませんか。やミシュランの星は私たちを美味しいレストランに導いてくれるでしょう。しかし、それよりももっと大切なことがあります。古の博士たちは星によってイエス・キリストに導かれたのです。夜空に瞬く星は、自分が何とちっぽけで、星の背後におられる存在は何と大きなお方かかということを私たちに教えてくれることでしょう。
バビロンは聖書において多くのページが割かれている国です。なぜなら聖書の民、ユダヤ人はかつてバビロンによって征服された歴史があるからです。彼らはバビロンに捕囚民として連行されたのです。それはイエス・キリストが誕生する約６００年も前のことです。
その時、捕囚民としてバビロンに連行された信仰の篤いユダヤ人の中にダニエルという人がいました。神は彼を祝福し、捕囚民でありながらバビロンのネブカデネザル王に取り上げられ、彼はバビロンの知識人を指導、管理する長官に就任しました。そのダニエルはダニエル書を聖書の中に残しました。そのダニエル書の９章にはこのような記録があります。それはダニエルに神の御使いガブリエルが現れ、これから起こることについて御使いがダニエルに語った言葉でした。
ダニエル９章２４節、２５節24あなたの民と、あなたの聖なる町については、七十週が定められています。これはとがを終らせ、罪に終りを告げ、不義をあがない、永遠の義をもたらし、幻と預言者を封じ、いと聖なる者に油を注ぐためです。25それゆえ、エルサレムを建て直せという命令が出てから、メシヤなるひとりの君が来るまで、七週と六十二週あることを知り、かつ悟りなさい。その間に、しかも不安な時代に、エルサレムは広場と街路とをもって、建て直されるでしょう。
ガブリエルはやがてメシヤが来られ、罪が終わり、そのためにその罪が贖われ、永遠の正義がもたらせられるであろうと語りました。ガブリエルは「エルサレムを建て直せ」という命令が出てから七週と六十二週を経てから、それが起きると具体的な数字を言い表しました。七週と六十二週を足すと六十九週になります。
創世記の天地創造において、既に一週は七日とされていました。また、バビロンにおいても紀元前３０００年頃にはすでに月の満ち欠けから一週は七日とされていました。ですから、この六十九週に七をかけると４８３日となり、これを年に置き換えると４８３年となります。そうしますとこのガブリエルの言葉はこのように解釈することができます。
「エルサレムを立て直せ」という宣言から４８３年後に、人の罪が贖われ、永遠の義が打ち立てられためにメシヤが現れるということです。それでは「エルサレムを立て直せ」という布告がいつ出されたのか、気になりませんか？そのことは聖書、ネヘミヤ２章に記されています。そこにはネヘミヤがアルタシャスタ王にエルサレムの再建を懇願し、それを王は受け入れ、その命令を発布する様が記録されているのです。ネヘミヤは開口一番、その時について２章１節において具体的に「アルタシャスタ王の第二十年、ニサンの月」と記しており、それは紀元前４４５年となります。
ダニエルは紀元前５９０年頃から紀元前５４０年ころまで、バビロンに仕えていました。驚くべきことに彼がガブリエルの言葉を聞いて１００年近い年月を経てから、「エルサレムを建て直せ」という布告がアルタシャスタ王から出されたのです。そのような意味でまさしくガブリエルの言葉は「預言」でありました。
古代学者たちによりますと当時、古代バビロンでは一年を３６０日としていました。これを踏まえて、それを現代の暦にしますと483×360÷365＝476年となり、アルタシャスタ王による復興が発令された紀元前４４５年から４７６年を経た年は紀元３１年となります。
イエス・キリストの誕生というのは厳密には紀元元年ではなく、そこには前後５、６年の間隔があったと多くの学者が言っています。イエス・キリストが実際に宣教を始めたのは、その歳、およそ３０歳と言われています。すなわち、この紀元３１年はイエス・キリストが宣教活動を始めた時間軸の中に収まるのです。ガブリエルの預言通りにメシヤ・イエスがあらわれ、人の罪を贖ったのです。
ダニエルはユダヤ人でありながら、バビロンに捕囚の民として連れていかれた人です。その人格と聡明さにより、バビロンにおいて王の側近となり、王にアドバイスを与えることができるような高い地位にいました。そのダニエルのレガシーはおそらく、それから６００年を経た博士が生きた時代にも伝えられていたことでしょう。国の将来を占う博士たちには、その国の伝説となっており、多くの預言的な言葉が含まれている賢者ダニエルの書物が手渡され、それを読み、研究することが求められていたに違いありません。
彼らは星を占う、数学に長けた賢者です。このダニエル書に記録された不思議な数字を素通りするはずがありません。彼らはダニエルの記録を調べつつ、その預言を心のどこかにおきながら、夜空を眺めていたのでありましょう。
そして、その夜空に通常とは異なる輝きを放つ星を発見したのでありましょう。ダニエルの「メシヤなるひとりの君が出る」という預言から換算して、今こそ、その君が誕生する時なのだということを彼らは悟ったのでしょう。そうでなければ、彼らのデータにないような不思議な星があらわれても、それとメシアの出現と結びつけることはできません。ですから彼らは東方の国からベツレヘムにやって来て、開口一番、彼らがそこにやってきた明確な目的について、こう言うことができたのです。「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。」
聖書には多くの数字が出てきており、それらはこれから起きることを指し示しており、多くの方達はその数字から、この出来事はいつ起きるだろうというようなことを言っています。私はこれらの「数字と預言」について、深入りして、断定的に将来の出来事の日程を指摘することに慎重ですし、注意しています。今までその数字から将来の出来事を完全に言い当てた人を私は知りませんし、自分は神ではなく、何も知り得ない人間であるのだということを自覚しているからです。しかし、ダニエル書に記されている、この預言を博士たちが細かく調べたとするのなら、彼らはメシヤの誕生について、それなりの確信をもった可能性はあるでしょう。
先に星を見て、神の存在を感じませんか？と申し上げました。しかし、それでは神がどんなお方なのか私たちには分かりません。神と自分にはどんな関係があるのかということは、星を眺めただけではわからないのです。
博士たちは自分の仕事、すなわち星を研究することを通して神の存在を感じていました。その彼らの「感覚」にダニエルの証言、すなわち「言葉」が加わったのです。彼らはダニエル書の数字のみならず、そこに記されている神のみ業についても読んでいたことでしょう。実に博士達は「神を感じる」という自らの感覚から、ダニエルの残した言葉により「神について知る」機会を得たのです。
「神の存在は信じています」という方達が、ここにもいると思います。しかし、私達にはそこから先がありません。大自然や星を眺めていても神が具体的などんな存在であるかは私達には分からないのです。神とはどんなお方なのか、そのことを知りたい方は、博士たちがそうしたように、どうか聖書を手にとって、そこに書かれている言葉に触れてみてください。
最後のことをお話ししましょう。ここまで「神を感じる」、「神について知る」ということについてお話ししてきました。最後は「神に出会い、神を知る」ということです。ユダヤを訪ねてきた博士たちを当時、その地域を統括していたヘロデ王は密かに呼び、彼らが異国からやってきた理由を聞き、それに対してこう言いました。「行って、その子のことを詳しく調べ、見つかったら知らせてくれ。わたしも行って拝もう」
この言葉を受け、博士達はヘロデの元を去り、いよいよ彼らの旅の目的地に向かいます。日本語の聖書はその場面を「東方で見た星が先立って進み、ついに幼子のいる場所の上にとどまった」と記しています。「ついに」という言葉には博士達が調べ求めていたメシヤに遂に会うことができる時がきたことを意味しますでしょう。いよいよ彼らのスピリチュアル・ジャーニーが、その終着点に到着したのです。A
彼らは「神を感じていました」、そしてダニエル書を通して、「神について知りました」。しかし、彼らはまだ神を個人的に知りませんでした。彼らの旅は夜空の星に導かれた旅でありますから、昼間は移動できない、夜の旅であります。闇を手探りするような旅であります。それは彼らの心の闇をも意味していたことでしょう。すなわち、神を感じながら、神について知りながら、しかし、まだ神を知らないという私たちの心の闇です。しかし、その彼らはいよいよ、魂の夜明けに立ち会うことになるのです。
博士達はその星が幼児のいる場所の上に止まった時、「その星を見て喜びにあふれた」と聖書はしるしています。この「喜びに溢れた」という言葉は、直訳すると「この上ない喜びを喜んだ」と訳せる文章でありまして、彼らの喜びの大きさというものを強調する文章になっています。その喜びは彼らが願い求めていたものに遂に巡り会ったという喜びです。彼らはその星の下にいる幼子イエスに出会い、彼を拝したのです。彼らはガブリエルが預言していたメシヤに出会ったのです。

皆さんの中にかつて星占いに凝ったことがある人がいるかもしれません。毎年、年末年始に初詣をしていた人たちがいるかもしれません。その時、皆さんは目には見えない、自分よりも大きな存在を心にとめていたに違いありません。

私達の経験がいかなるものであれ、神の愛を知るために無駄なものはありません。人生の荒波にもまれたから、教会の敷居をまたいだという方がきっと、ここにいますでしょう。見方を変えれば、その荒波がなければ、皆さんは主イエスに出会うことがなかったことでしょう。
『私がその愛を知るためには、今日までのすべてが必要だったのだ』
博士達はヘロデが「その子を見つけ出したら、自分に知らせるように」と言った言葉を忘れてはいませんでした。彼らは知っていました。ヘロデが幼児イエスの居場所を知ったら、嫉妬と恐れに満ちた彼はきっとイエスを殺すだろう。それゆえ彼らはヘロデの元には帰らずに、「別の道」を通って東の国に帰って行ったと聖書は記しています。彼らが別の道を通って帰ったということ、それは彼らがそれまでの生き方ではなく、まったく別の生き方を選んだということを象徴する言葉です。
そして、彼らはイエスに黄金と乳香と没薬を捧げました。これらは彼らが占いに用いていた道具であったと言われています。彼らがその大切な商売道具を捧げたということは、彼らがもはや星の動きによる占いによって自分の人生を支配されて生きるのではなく、神の贈り物であるイエスによって生きる者となったということです。
クリスマスはいつもその年が終わる一週間前にやってきます。一週間後には新しい年がやってきます。この一年を振り返るときに、私たちの歩みの中にはいたる所にイエス・キリストを知るために必要であった出来事があったと思うのですが、皆さんはどう思いますか？
私達の心には「この世界には自分よりも大きな存在がいるのではないか」というセンサーが生まれつき備わっています。なぜなら聖書が言っているように、神が私たちを作ったからです。自分の命の始まりに関わったお方の残像が私たちの心に刻まれているからです。そして、私たちの魂はその奥底から、その神との出会いを求めています。
時折、ふっと心に感じる虚しさ、その心の空白を埋めることができるのは、自分の命の始まりに関わった神だけなのです。星を眺めて、神聖な気分になっても、その星の背後にいる存在が具体的にどんなお方なのか、私たちには皆目、見当がつきません。しかし、私たちが聖書を手にとり、その言葉を読み進めていくのなら、私たちに対する神の心について知ることができます。
そして、その神の心は一言で言いますのなら、私たちに対する無条件の愛です。そうです、このことこそが我々人間がいつも切に求めているものなのです。実に聖書は私たちに送られた神のラブレターです。
博士たちは飼い葉桶に寝かされている幼児に出会った時、星の背後にいる偉大な神の人知を超えた愛を悟ったのです。「でもね、私は今、２０００年前のベツレヘムには生きていないから」と私達は思います。２０２５年を生きる私たちにイエス・キリストとの出会いはないのでしょうか。イエス様は私たちとは無関係なのでしょうか。
このイエス様は成長し、私たちの罪の身代わりとなり十字架にかかりました。私たちは今でも、その十字架の前に立つことができます。その十字架は私の罪のためであり、そのことにより私の罪は赦されたということを知るのです。
それは、私たちがイエス様について知った瞬間ではなくて、イエス様と個人的に出会い、イエス様を知った瞬間です。我々の人生の旅の目的は、このイエス・キリストに出会い、その愛を知ることなのです。
もうすぐ今年は終わり、新しい一年が始まります。博士たちが神の愛を知るために、その日までの全てが必要だったように、皆さんもご自身の人生で経験してきた諸々のことを思い起こしてみてください。なぜ私は今、この教会の礼拝に出席しているのか、ご自身に問うてみてください。確かにそうだ、これまでの自分の人生の歩みはこのキリストの愛を知るための歩みだったと、思い当たることがいくつもありませんか。さいわいだったことも、困難だったと思われることも、一つ一つを思いめぐらすのなら、それらの全てが私達をイエス・キリストのもとへと導くものであったと気がつきませんか。主イエス・キリストは私たちにこう語りかけます。
ヨハネの黙示録３章２０節「見よ、わたしは戸の外に立って、たたいている。だれでもわたしの声を聞いて戸をあけるなら、わたしは彼のところにはいって彼と食を共にし、彼もわたしと食を共にする。」
我々にとりまして、このイエス・キリストと個人的に出会い、彼を知るということ、それ以上に大切な人生のイベントはないのです。２０２６年の年明け、博士たちのようにこれまでとは違う、主とともに歩む道を新しく歩き始めたいと思われる方はいないでしょうか。

Magi from the East: The Journey to Encounter Jesus Christ

Advent begins today. At church, we will light one candle each Sunday from now on, eagerly awaiting Christmas. From now until Christmas, churches around the world will proclaim the birth of Jesus Christ every Sunday. The Bible records the people involved in Christ’s birth, but today from among those people, I would like to focus on the Magi from the east. First, I would like to read the text from Matthew 2:1–12.
Matthew 2:1-12
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the One who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.” 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child. As soon as you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Magi that have come from the east appear here. They were scholars of astrology from the eastern lands, who were intellectuals of their time rich in knowledge of astronomy and mathematics. Which country in the east did these Magi come from?
Many scholars suggest that it may be the region where Babylon once flourished along the Euphrates River. This Babylon later became Persia, and the region includes present-day Iran and Iraq. We know how these countries are confronting Christianity today. When I think of this, I contemplate God’s profound providence in that their ancestors once journeyed seeking the birth of Jesus Christ.
Their job was to study the movements of the stars and predict the future from them. At that time, astrology was used to predict the rise and fall of nations and the fortunes of royal families. For this reason, they studied the vast universe.
A botanist would be able to pick up a plant. However, since their research subjects were stars and the moon, they could not go to those places, and naturally, they could not pick them up and touch them. They were only permitted to observe them from afar.
They must have found orderly movements of the stars there. Behind “order” there needs to be “intelligence”. That is because order is not something that arises from chaos or chance. Yes, what they were exploring naturally became worship of the gods. At that time, it was believed in Babylon that divine revelations could be received through the stars and planets, and the cosmos was considered a sacred place.
There is a Japanese singer named Masashi Sada. This singer has a famous song titled “Kaze Ni Tatsu Lion” (“Lion Standing in the Wind”), which tells the story of a Japanese doctor who actually did medical activities in Africa.
The song contains the lyrics: “When facing illness within this great nature, one ponders about God and about people.” When people confront the grandeur of nature, and when they confront the limits of their own bodies, they contemplate the existence of something far greater than themselves. For this reason, humanity has sensed the presence of something greater than itself, and out of reverence for this presence, it has created various gods and made them objects of worship. The Magi from the east gazed daily upon the stars floating in the vast universe, and in them they recognized the existence of God.
Countless stars also shine above our heads as we live in the here and now. However, for us, stars are no longer as familiar as they were for the Magi. To begin with, the city we live in is too bright even at night, making it impossible to see the stars. We spend our nights staring at screens bathed in blue light, and no one even thinks to gaze at the night sky. Even when it comes to stars, we are only concerned with the number of Yelp or Michelin stars.
People in the Lord, you must have various worries each day. Why not step outside sometimes and gaze at the night sky? Yelp and Michelin stars will guide us to delicious restaurants. However, there is something even more important than that. The ancient Magi were guided to Jesus Christ by a star. The stars twinkling in the night sky remind us how small we truly are, and how great is the Being behind them.
Babylon is a nation to which many pages are devoted in the Bible. Because the people of the Bible, the Jews, have a history of having been conquered by Babylon. They were taken captive to Babylon. This occurred about 600 years before the birth of Jesus Christ.
At that time, among the devout Jews who had been taken captive to Babylon, there was a man named Daniel. God blessed him, and though he was a captive, he was taken up by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and appointed chief administrator over the wise men of Babylon. That Daniel wrote the Book of Daniel that is the Bible. Chapter 9 of the Book of Daniel contains the following record. It was the words spoken to Daniel by the angel of God, Gabriel, who appeared to him and told him about the things that were to come.

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place. 25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.
Gabriel spoke of how the Messiah would come, sin would end, and for that reason, sin would be atoned for, and everlasting righteousness would be brought about. Gabriel stated that it would happen after seven weeks and sixty-two weeks had passed since the decree to “restore and rebuild Jerusalem” was issued, specifying the exact number. Adding seven weeks and sixty-two weeks gives sixty-nine weeks.
In the creation of heaven and earth in Genesis, a week was already defined as seven days Moreover, in Babylon around 3000 BC, the lunar cycle was already recognized as consisting of seven days. Therefore, multiplying these sixty-nine weeks by seven yields 483 days, and when converted to years would be 483 years. When we do so, Gabriel’s words can be interpreted as follows.
483 years after the declaration to “restore and rebuild Jerusalem,” the Messiah will appear to atone for human sin and establish everlasting righteousness. So, aren’t you curious as to when the proclamation to rebuild Jerusalem was issued? This is recorded in the Bible, in Nehemiah chapter 2. It records how Nehemiah earnestly pleaded with King Artaxerxes to rebuild Jerusalem, and how the king accepted this and issued his decree. Nehemiah begins by specifically noting the time in chapter 2 verse 1 as “in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes,” which corresponds to 445 B.C.
Daniel served in Babylon from around 590 B.C. to around 540 B.C. Remarkably, it was nearly a century after he heard Gabriel’s words that King Artaxerxes issued the decree to “restore and rebuild Jerusalem”.In that sense, Gabriel’s words were truly a prophecy.
According to ancient scholars, the ancient Babylonians at that time counted a year as 360 days. Based on this, converting it to the modern calendar gives 483 × 360 ÷ 365 = 476 years. Thus, 476 years from the year 445 B.C., when King Artaxerxes decreed the restoration, would be 31 A.D.
Many scholars state that the birth of Jesus Christ did not occur precisely in the year 1 A.D., but rather there was a gap of five or six years before or after that date. It is said that Jesus Christ actually began His ministry at the age of about thirty years old. That is to say, this year 31 A.D. falls within the timeline during which Jesus Christ began His missionary activities. As Gabriel prophesied, the Messiah Jesus appeared, and atoned the sins of mankind.
Daniel was a Jew who was taken captive to Babylon as part of the exiled people. His character and intelligence earned him a position as a close advisor to the king in Babylon, placing him in a high position where he could offer counsel to the king. Daniel’s legacy was likely still being passed down even in the era when the Magi lived, some 600 years later. The Magi who foretold the nation’s future were undoubtedly given the writings of the wise Daniel, which had become legendary in that land and contained many prophetic words, and were required to read and study them.
They are wise men skilled in mathematics who interpreted the stars. They would never overlook the mysterious numbers recorded in the Book of Daniel. They gazed at the night sky, examining Daniel’s records while keeping his prophecy somewhere in their hearts.
And so, they must have discovered a star shining with an unusual brilliance in that night sky. Doing calculations based on Daniel’s prophecy that “the Anointed One, the ruler, comes,” they must have realized that now is the time for that ruler to be born. Otherwise, even if a mysterious star not found in their data were to appear, they could not connect it to the coming of the Messiah. Therefore, they came from the eastern lands to Bethlehem and were able to state, right from the start, the clear purpose for which they had come there. “Where is the One who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.”
The Bible contains many numbers, and these point to events yet to come. Many people interpret these numbers to speculate about when such events might occur. I am cautious and careful about delving deeply into these “numbers and prophecies” and making definitive statements about the timing of future events. I have never known anyone who could perfectly predict future events based on those numbers, and I am fully aware that I am not God, but merely a human being who does not completely know anything. However, if the Magi had carefully examined this prophecy recorded in the Book of Daniel, they might well have gained a reasonable degree of certainty regarding the Messiah’s birth.
Didn’t I say earlier, that by looking at the stars, you might sense the presence of God? But then we would not know what kind of being God is. The nature of the relationship between God and oneself cannot be understood merely by gazing at the stars.
The Magi sensed the presence of God through their work, that is, through studying the stars. Daniel’s testimony, that is, “words,” were added to their “sensation.” They would have read not only the numbers in the Book of Daniel, but also the divine deeds recorded there. Indeed, the Magi gained an opportunity to “know about God” through Daniel’s words, based on their own sensation of “sensing God.”
I believe there are people here who say, “I believe in the existence of God.” But for us, that is as far as it goes. Even when gazing at nature or the stars, we cannot know what kind of concrete being God is. If you want to know what kind of being God is, please pick up the Bible and touch the words written within it, just as the Magi did.
Let’s talk about the last thing. So far, we have talked about “sensing God” and “knowing about God.” Lastly, it is about “encountering God and knowing God.” King Herod, who ruled over that region at the time, secretly summoned the Magi who had come to Judah, inquired about the reason for their journey from afar, and then said to them:
“Go and search carefully for the Child. As soon as you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.”
Upon hearing these words, the Magi departed from Herod, and finally set out for the destination of their journey. The Japanese Bible describes the scene as follows: “The star they had seen in the east went ahead of them and finally stopped over the place where the Child was.” The word “finally” signifies that the time has come for the Magi to finally meet the Messiah they have been searching for. At last, their spiritual journey has reached its final destination.
They “sensed God,” and through the Book of Daniel, they came to “know about God”. However, they still did not know God personally. Their journey is guided by the stars in the night sky, so it is a journey of the night, unable to travel by day. It was a journey like groping in the dark. It must have signified the darkness within their hearts as well. That is, the darkness within our hearts—sensing God, knowing about God, yet still not knowing God. However, they will soon witness the dawn of the soul.
The Bible records that when the star stopped over the place where the Child was, the Magi, “they saw the star, they were overjoyed. The word “overjoyed” can be literally translated as “rejoiced with the utmost joy,” emphasizing the immense depth of their joy. That joy is the joy of finally encountering what they had long desired. They encountered the Child Jesus under that star, and worshiped Him. They had met the Messiah foretold by Gabriel.
In the novel “Silence,” written by Japanese author Shusaku Endo and was also adapted into a film, the protagonist Father Rodrigues utters these words:
“To know that love, everything up until today was necessary.”
The Magi from the east were those who studied the stars and celestial bodies and held a faith that revered them. In this regard, their faith differs from faith in the God of the Bible. However, it was through astrology which was their livelihood in a foreign land, that they encountered Jesus Christ. To put it another way, what seemed at first glance to have nothing to do with Jesus Christ became the very thing that led them to know Him. That became essential for meeting Jesus. This message tells us that whatever we have experienced in the past can become necessary for us to know the love of Jesus.
Some of you may have once been really into horoscopes. There may be people who have made it a tradition to visit a shrine every New Year’s time. At that moment, you must have held in your hearts a presence greater than yourselves, one invisible to the eye.
“To know that love, everything up until today was necessary.”
Whatever our experiences may be, none are wasted in knowing God’s love. Surely there are some who are here who have been tossed about by life’s storms, and then crossed the threshold of the church. If you look at it another way, without those rough waves, you would never have met the Lord Jesus.

The Magi did not forget Herod’s words: “As soon as you find the Child, report to me. They knew. If Herod learned where the Child Jesus was, filled with jealousy and fear, he would surely kill Him. Therefore, the Bible records that they did not go back to Herod, but they returned to their country in the east by “another route”. The fact that they took another route home symbolizes that they chose a completely different way of life, not the one they had lived until then.
And they presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. These are said to have been the tools they used for divination. That they offered up their precious tools of trade signifies that they no longer lived lives governed by the movements of the stars, but had become people who lived by Jesus, the gift of God.
Christmas always comes one week before the end of the year. One week later, the new year arrives. Looking back on this past year, I believe our journey was filled with events that were necessary for us to come to know Jesus Christ. What do you all think?
Our hearts are born with a sensor that asks, “Could there be something greater than ourselves in this world?” That is because, as the Bible says, God created us. It is because the lingering image of the One who was involved in the beginning of our lives is etched in our hearts. And deep within our souls, we yearn for that encounter with God.
Occasionally, a sudden sense of emptiness fills our hearts. Only the God who was involved in the beginning of our lives can fill that void within our hearts. Gazing at the stars, we may feel a sense of the sacred, yet we have absolutely no idea what kind of being lies behind those stars. However, if we pick up the Bible and read its words, we can come to know God’s heart toward us.
And if we were to describe the heart of that God in a single phrase, it would be unconditional love for us. Yes, this is precisely what we humans always yearn for. Indeed, the Bible is God’s love letter sent to us.
When the Magi encountered the Child lying in the manger, they understood God’s great love that is beyond human comprehension, hidden behind the stars. We think: “But you see, I am not actually living in Bethlehem two thousand years ago.” Is there no encounter with Jesus Christ for us who are living in 2025? Is Jesus Christ irrelevant to us?
This Jesus grew up, became the substitute for our sins, and was crucified upon a cross. We can still stand before that cross today. We can know the cross was for my sins, and that through it my sins were forgiven.
It is not the moment we learned about Jesus, but the moment we personally encountered Jesus and came to know Him. The purpose of our life’s journey is to encounter this Jesus Christ and to know His love.
The year is almost over, and a new one is about to begin. Just as the Magi needed everything that had happened up to that day to know God’s love, please recall all the various experiences you have had in your own life. Ask yourself why you are attending the worship service at this church right now. Indeed, isn’t it true that looking back, you can see how many times you’ve realized your life’s journey so far has been a journey to know this love of Christ? If we reflect on every single thing, both blessings and what were difficulties, do we not realize that all of them led us to Jesus Christ? The Lord Jesus Christ speaks to us in the following manner.
Revelation 3:20
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with Me.”
For us, there is no more important event in life than encountering Jesus Christ personally and coming to know Him. As we enter the new year of 2026, is there anyone who like the Magi, desires to embark on a new journey walking with the Lord that is different from the path taken until now?
