健やかだから、富めるから神様は素晴らしいのか。祈りが効かれ癒されたから、豊かになったから神様は生きておられるのか、私達はどこかでこのようなことに別れを告げ、高嶺に近づかなければなりません。

ヨハネ１４章２５節－３１節
私達は一年をかけて「キリストを知る」という年間の標語と共に毎週の日曜礼拝でヨハネによる福音書を見てまいりました。このシリーズを始めましてから一年が経ちましたが、今だもって私達はヨハネの１４章におり、あと８章も残っています。そう、一年経ってもまだヨハネの福音書は終わらないのです。しかし、年度は変わってしまったのです。さぁ、どうしましょうか！
今日の礼拝プログラムが変わったことにお気づきになりましたでしょうか。そうです、表紙が変わりました。先週までは「キリストを知る」という年間標語がそこには書かれていたのですが、今日から今年度の教会標語となります「健やかな時も 病む時も 豊かな時も 貧しき時も」とさせていただきました。
このことについては、この一年をかけてお話していきたく願っておりますが、お気づきのようにこれは結婚式の時に新郎新婦に問いかけるもので、私達は同じ問いかけをこの一年間、心に受け止めていく、そんな年を送りたいと願っております。すなわち自分の置かれている状況がいい時であっても、そうでなくとも神様に信頼して、そこを乗り越えていくことができるように、この標語はピリピ書４章１１節『私は乏しいからこう言うのではない。私はどんな境遇にあっても足ることを学んだ』からとらせていただきました。
この２０１５年度の標語が公にされる日に、順をおってヨハネ伝を見てきております私達の前に備えられている今日の言葉はヨハネの１４章となりました。神様は度々、このようなことをされるのですが、ここにはまさしく今年の年間標語に関わることが書かれており、神様の導きを感じております。それでは今日の箇所を見て参りましょう。
『25これらのことは、あなたがたと一緒にいた時、すでに語ったことである。26しかし、助け主、すなわち、父がわたしの名によってつかわされる聖霊は、あなたがたにすべてのことを教え、 またわたしが話しておいたことを、ことごとく思い起させるであろう。27わたしは平安をあなたがたに残して行く。わたしの平安をあなたがたに与える。わたしが与えるのは、世が与えるようなものとは異なる。あなたがたは心を騒がせるな、またおじけるな』（ヨハネ１４章２５節－２７節）
この言葉はイエス・キリストが言われた言葉です。私達が言葉を発する時に、それがどのような状況で言われたかということによって、その言葉の意味が全く変わってきますが、イエス様がこの言葉を言われた時の状況ということを知ります時に、私達はイエス・キリストとはいったい何者なのかということを思わされるのです。
イエス様はこの言葉と共にこの後、さらに弟子達に語り続けます。そして、最後に父なる神に語りかけるかのようにして祈ります。そのことがこの後の３章、すなわちヨハネ１５章から１７章に記録されています。その間、時間にしておそらく３０、４０分でしょうか、そして、その直後、１８章の冒頭においてイエス様は彼を裏切った１２弟子の一人のユダ、兵卒、祭司長、パリサイ人達に捕えられ、そのまま不正な裁判を受け、その数時間後に十字架にかけられるのです。
その十字架刑が自分の罪に対する処罰なら、それは受けねばならぬものでありましょうが、それでありましても自らの手足が釘づけにされて、磔にされて大地に掲げられるということは何と恐ろしいことでありましょう。しかもイエス・キリストの十字架は自分が犯した罪のためではなく、人の身代わりとなるものでした。私達が本来、受けねばならない罪を自ら一身に背負い、その身代わりとしてイエス・キリストは十字架にかかりました。そのような時、三年半もの間、共に過ごした弟子達は皆、イエス様を捨ててて去っていきました。まさしくイエス様を待ち受けていたものは孤独な処刑でした。
私達が心して受け止めなければならないことは、先の「わたしの平安をあなたがたに与える」と言われた時に、イエス様は既にこれらのことが数時間後に起こるということ、すなわち自分を捕える者達の足音が近づいていること、また自分は十字架にかけられて死ぬということを知っていたということです。さらには「わたしの平安を」と語りかけているその弟子達もこの後、イエスを置いて逃げてしまうだろうということもイエス様は全て承知で、その弟子達に『わたしは平安をあなたがたに残して行く。わたしの平安をあなたがたに与える。わたしが与えるのは、世が与えるようなものとは異なる。あなたがたは心を騒がせるな、またおじけるな』（２７）と言われたのです。このことをもし私達の新年の標語にあてはめて考えますのなら、この時のイエス様の状況は誰もが願う「健やかな時」とか「豊かな時」ではなく、それは「病める時」であり「貧しき時」という部類に入れられることでありました。否、それは病める時、貧しき時とは比べものにならない、まさしく最悪の状況だったのです。
このイエス様が置かれていた状況に、もし私達が立たされるのなら、私達の心にあるものは何でしょうか。イエス様のような平安が心にあるでしょうか。とんでもありません、そこには不安と恐れ、そして怒り、悲しみ、悔しさというような思いが満ちていることでしょう。誰がこのような状況に置かれることを望むでしょうか。
この世界にある多くの宗教は「御利益を求める宗教」です。そうです、私達は自分が願っていることを叶えてくれる神々を拝むのです。それは時に商売繁盛であったり、無病息災であったりするわけです。大抵、このようなことを願う私達は普段はその神々のことを考えることはありません。まさしくそれは「困った時の神頼み」であり、自分が窮地に陥っている時や大きな課題が目の前にある時にだけ神々を呼び出すのです。言うなれば神とは私達の願いを叶えるためにあればいいもので、その願いが叶わないのなら「どこに神がいるのか」、「神などいないだろ」と私達は感情を害するのです。そうです、それは「わたしの願いが叶うのか、叶わないのか、叶わないのなら神も仏もあるもんか」ということです。皆さん、いかが思われますか。このように神々を見ているということは、結局のところ、その神々は自分達のために役立ってくれればいいと人が都合よく作りだしたものでありましょう。
しかし、パウロという人は聖書中、このこととは全く逆のことを言っています。そうです、彼が示すところの神に私達は今朝、目を留めているのです。パウロはこう書き記しました。『ああ人よ。あなたは、神に言い逆らうとは、いったい、何者なのか。造られたものが造った者に向かって、「なぜ、わたしをこのように造ったのか」と言うことがあろうか』（ローマ９章２０節）。
パウロはここで誰がこの世界の、私達の主（あるじ）であるのかということをはっきりと書いています。人が、もっというと自分がこの世界の主なのか、それとも神なのかということに対して、パウロは神こそがこの世界の支配者であり、このお方により私達は命が与えられ、その命は今日にいたるまで保たれているのです。止まることなく今も動いている私達の心臓の鼓動は私達の努力のたまものではなく、全て神のあわれみと恵みだというのです。すなわち私達が与えられている命もその他の諸々のものも神様が私達に与えてくださったものであり、そのような意味で私達は本来、全くヨブが言うところの信仰の告白、すなわち「主が与え、主が取られたのだ、主の御名はほむべきかな」（ヨブ１章２１節）という言葉の前に、ただ頭を垂れる以外ない者なのです。
聖書を見ておりまして、またこの世界を観察していますと分かってくることがあります。それはこの世界には秩序があり、そこには法則があるということです。天体の動き、潮の満ち引き、季節の変化、動植物の繁殖、この世界には定められている法則というものがあり、その法則に従い私達は生きています。すなわち物は上から下に落ちてくるという重力の法則のもとでは、信仰者であっても頭上から物が落ちてくれば、その直撃を受けるということであり、口にいれてはいけないものを入れれば、誰でも体に害を受けるということです。この法則には私達が老いることや死ぬという不可避な法則もあり、これらの法則と共に予測不可能な人間の営みもあり、そんな私達が関係しあって生きていますから、諸々の試みやフラストレーションを抱えながら生きることは免れないのです。ゆえにこの世界には私達が受けなければならない「病める時」や「貧しき時」という類のことが満ちているのです。
そして、ここで私達が深く心に留めなければならないことは、神の一人子、イエス・キリストもこれら全てのことを、その身に甘んじで生きたということです。すなわち雨が降れば、その雨はイエス様の体を濡らし、ムチ打たれれば激痛と血が吹き出し、食事をとらなければ空腹となり、家計のやりくりや、近所とのもめごと、親家族の老いや死、これらの全てにイエス・キリストは甘んじられたのです。それらすべてを経験したお方が今朝、私達に語りかけるのです。
『わたしは平安をあなたがたに残して行く。わたしの平安をあなたがたに与える。わたしが与えるのは、世が与えるようなものとは異なる。あなたがたは心を騒がせるな、またおじけるな』（２７）と。
さらにはそれだけではありません、この一連の会話の終わりにイエス様はこうまで言いました。いいえ、「言いました」ではなく、こう「言い切った」のです。『これらのことをあなたがたに話したのは、わたしにあって平安を得るためである。あなたがたは、この世ではなやみがある。しかし、勇気を出しなさい。わたしはすでに世に勝っている』（ヨハネ１６章３３節）。
イエス様ご自身、この世界に生きて得た結論の一つはこの世界に生きていること自体、それだけで人は諸々の悩みを負うということでした。この言葉はヨハネ １６章に記されていまして、先にお話しましたように、今日の中心聖句はヨハネ１４章で、その後、二章かけてイエス様はまさしく遺言となるような言葉を弟子達に語ったのですが、その一番最後に言われた言葉がこの言葉なのです。すなわち、イエス様は「これらのことをあなたがたに話したのは」とこれまで話したことを全て総括されて、その理由はあなたがたが「平安を得る」ためなのだと、ここでもその結論として平安について語っているのです。そして、それを与えうる者は「この悩み多き世界に勝利を取っている者、すなわち私だけなのだ」ということをここで語っているのです。
この世界に生きる私達にとっての平安とは何でしょうか。週末に目覚まし時計をかけずにゆっくり起きて、朝風呂にでもつかり、コーヒーをゆっくりと飲みつつ、のんびりとショッピングに出かけるような一日を過ごすことは確かに心穏やかな平安な時でありましょう。しかし、この類の平安の特徴は、次の瞬間にどうなってしまうのか分からないものなのです。朝風呂につかっている時に緊急の電話があるかもしれませんし、のんびりとショッピングをした帰り道にあて逃げされるかもしれない、そうなりますとその時にありました平安はいとも簡単に吹き飛んでしまうのです。
さらにまた、言うまでもなく私達の現実の生活では今、お話したような穏やかな時が稀であることを私達は知っています。目覚ましをいくつもかけて、前日の心身の疲れを引きずりながら起き上がる。朝から頭痛がしたり、家を出ようと思ったらガレージドアが開かなかったり、あのオフィスに行くのかと思うと胃がキリキリしてきたり、これからの生活や家族のことを考えると心騒ぐようなことがある・・・。そのような状況に置かれようなら、私達の心の平安は跡形もなくなり、心が騒ぐのです。
これらのことは私達が望むべきものではありませんし、苦痛でもありますから、私達はどうにかして、その難局を乗り越えようとします。いくつかは解決し、いくつかは保留し、いくつかはもっと状況が悪くなります。このように私達は皆、重荷を背負い生きており、それからしばし目をそらすために諸々の極端なことにはしることもあり、それがさらに私達の状況を悪くさせています。
残念ながらこの世界には「平和」を願い求めない人達がいます。彼らは容赦なく平和を壊します。しかし、大抵、多くの者達は平和な世界を願います。子供達に残す未来があるとしたら誰しも平和な世界を望むことでしょう。平和という言葉を辞書で調べますと「戦争のない状態、長い戦乱の時代の合間に訪れる平穏無事な状態」と書かれていました。願わくばそのような状態に私達は身を置きたいものです。
この世界には「平和運動」「平和活動」をしている人がたくさんいますが、それでは平和を願い、そのために行動している人達の心に「平和な心」があるのかと問われるのなら、そうとも言えないのではないでしょうか。もしかしたら、自分と異なることを主張する者達に対する怒りと憎しみが心に満ち、それでありながら「平和」のプラカードを掲げているかもしれません。プラカードを置いて帰宅した家庭では、もしかしたら骨肉の争いが繰り広げられているかもしれません。
お話しておりますようにイエス・キリストは「わたしの平安」を弟子達に残しました。ある意味、それだけを残しました。イエス様は彼らに一坪の土地も残さず、それぞれに数枚の銀貨を残すこともありませんでした。イエス様が去った後に、弟子達のもとに残されたものは「私が与えると言われたキリストの平安」だったのです。
ある父親が、家から遠く離れた所で一人暮らしをしている息子の暮らすアパートを訪ねたとしましょう。部屋に入り、中を見渡します。アルバイトをしながら学校に通っているそんな生活ゆえ、何もない質素な部屋です。父親は数日、そのアパートで息子と過ごします。実際にそこで彼と生活しますと、そこに足りないものが分かります。あればいいのにと思わされるものが分かってくるのです。そう、父は彼が炊飯器を持っていないことに気がつきました。ゆえに父親の目に彼の食生活は安定していないように見受けられました。いよいよ父が息子に別れを告げて帰る日、彼がいない間に買っておいた炊飯器を彼のもとに置いていきます。父が我が子の暮らしぶりを見て、その子に今、一番必要なのは炊飯器であると判断したからです。私達はこのようなものを「置き土産」と呼んでいます。
イエス・キリストはこの世界に３３年間、生きました。その誕生も、成長も、生活も周りにいる人達と何ら変わりませんでした。その生活は質素であり、そこには私達と同じような病苦もあり、家族や親せきの間で起こる問題、近所との問題、仕事上の問題、自然災害によるところの災い、そして死というものがありました。イエス様は人の世界に起こるそれら諸々の出来事をつぶさに見、自らもそれらの一つ一つを経験しながら人生を送りました。
皆さん、先の父親の心を思いつつ、想像してみてください。イエス様が人の生活を全て観察し、そこに自らも身を置いて過ごし、いよいよその所を離れ去る時がきたら、そこに何を残していくのだろうかと。先の父親は息子にと一番、必要なものを考え、それを残したのです。イエス様がこの世界を見、もっと言うなら私達を見、この私達に本当に必要なものは何なのだろうか、あなたに何を残していこうかとお考えになられ、それこそあれもこれもというものの中から、最後に一つ選ばれたのが「わたしの平安」だったのです。ここに神の子なるイエス様の人間に対する深い洞察があります。本当に私達に必要なものをイエス様は見極め、それを残されたのです。
群衆も弟子達でさえも彼らはイエス様に豊かな生活を求めました。しかし、イエス様はその要望には応えませんでした。豊かな生活は常に変わるからです。また何度もお話していますように豊かな生活が時に人の悩みの種となることをこのお方は知っていたからです。それが人を本当に幸いにするものではないということをこのお方は知っていたからです。エルサレム一の富豪の家の中にある問題をイエス様は見極めていたでしょうし、健康に恵まれておりながらも、その健康体の用い方を知らずに、自分にも周りにも混乱をもたらしている人達をつぶさにイエス様は見たことでしょう。
イエス・キリストが私達に与えようとされたのは「争いのない平和な世界」ではなくて、「争いのある世界」の中にあっても変わることのない私がもっている平安なのです。神様が人に自由意思を与えている限り、人の間に争いのない世界が実現することはないからです。そんな世界を生きていく私達に本当に必要なのは世が与えることのないイエス・キリストの平安なのです。
先日、妻と近所の山に登り、下山している時に幼い子供を抱きかかえて、大きなストローラーを押しながら登ってくる夫婦を見ました。私達はその山には何度も登っているので、そのトレイルをよく知っています。この夫婦が向かう先にはそんな大きなストローラーを押せない場所がたくさんあるのです。しかし、おそらく彼らはその山に登ったことがないのでしょう。「あんな大きなものをもってきても、どこかで置いていかないと先には進めないね」と妻と話しました。後々、それが彼らを苦しめることを知らずに彼らは山頂を目指しているのです。私達の人生もそのようなもので、その時々に置いていかなければならないものがあるのです。
しかし、私達の心は私達が行く先々についてくるのです。鍵や携帯電話、パスポートを家に忘れて出かけることはあります。しかし、自分の心を忘れて出かける人はいません。この心は常に自分と共にあるからです。心はいつも一緒です。この心が私達を支配しているのです。その時にあなたの心はどうなのか、その時に私があなたがたに残していきたいのは「変わることのない私がもっているこの平安だ」とイエス様は言われたのです。
この後に歌います新聖歌２６８番、「御国の心地す」が私は大好きです。
悲しみ尽きざる 浮世にありても
日々主と歩めば 御国の心地す
ハレルヤ！罪、咎、消されし我が身は
いずくにありても御国心地す
彼方の御国は 御顔の微笑み
拝する心の 中にも建てらる
山にも谷にも 小屋にも宮にも
日々主と住まえば 御国の心地す
私達はここまで引き上げられることを目指しましょう。すなわち、この心に平安があるのなら、私達はどこに行ってもその環境に平安と共に生きることができるのです。イエス様が人の生活の一部始終を見て、私が彼らに残すことができる最高のものはこの平安だと判断されたのです。この平安に勝るものは私達の人生にはないからです。
環境は大切です。できる限り住みやすい環境を整えるべきです。なぜなら、環境に問題があると私達も影響を受けるからです。しかし、その環境をある程度、整えましたら、そこから先は自分の心の問題ということをしかと知らなければなりません。そうでないと私達は決して満たされることのない世界をさまようことになります。そう、そこはあのサマリアの女やソロモンが迷い込んだ世界です。
先にお話しましたように私達の新年の教会標語は病める時も、健やかな時も、貧しき時も、富める時も」です。実際に牧師が新郎新婦にこの言葉を語りかける時はこう言うのです「あなたは病める時も、健やかな時も、貧しき時も、富める時も この男（女）を愛しますか」。
自らの身に危険が及んだ時にイエス様の弟子達はイエスから逃げ去りました。彼らの心に当然平安はなく、ただ恐れが彼らを支配していました。しかし、その内の一人ペテロにイエス・キリストは復活され出会われ、こう聞かれたのです「あなたはわたしを愛するか」と。
この言葉に含まれているものは、まさしく「これから、あなたはいかなる時も私を愛するか」という語りかけなのです。この問いかけを受けたペテロはその後、どうなっていくのでしょうか。そうです、ペテロはその後、自分の状況が最悪であってもイエスを愛することを止めませんでした。なぜ愛することを止めなかったのでしょうか。
イエス様ご自身、最悪の状況の中、彼を愛し彼のために十字架にかかられたことを知っていたからです。そのような状況の只中でこのお方は「わたしはあなたにわたしの平安を残していく」と言われたこと、「あなたがたはこの世では悩みがある。しかし、勇気を出しなさい。わたしは既に世に勝っている」と言われたイエスの言葉を彼は信じたからです。これらのことを全て先に見越しているかのように預言者イザヤはイエス・キリストの十字架についてイザヤ５３章で書き記しているではありませんか。
しかし彼（イエス･キリスト）はわれわれのとがのために傷つけられ、われわれの不義のために砕かれたのだ。彼（イエス･キリスト）はみずから懲らしめをうけて、われわれに平安を与え、その打たれた傷によって、われわれはいやされたのだ（イザヤ５３章５節）。
この一年、私達の前途に何が待ち受けているのかを知る者はいません。しかし、私達は病める時も、健やかな時も、貧しき時も、富める時もこのキリストを仰ぎ、このキリストが私達に残された平安をいただく者とされましょう。まさしく、それは「こんな生き方があったのか！」という人生です。この高嶺を目指して登り続ける価値は、この世のいかなるものをもっても置き換えることができないのです。お祈りしましょう。
In sickness, in health, for poorer, and for richer

John 14:25-31
For the last one year, we have been studying the Gospel According to John at our Sunday services under the theme of “To know Christ”. Although one year has already past, we are still at chapter 14 of John, with 8 more chapters to go. So, we did not finish the study of Gospel According to John yet. But we are starting a new year at our church. What are we to do?
Have you noticed that the service program you have in hand has changed? Yes, we have a new cover. Up until last week, the cover announced the theme for the last year, “To know Christ.” Starting today, we see the new theme on the cover: “In health, in sickness, in rich, and in poor”
I will be talking about this theme for one year starting today. Some of you might have noticed that the theme is very similar to a wedding vow. We would like to study this vow this year as it relates to our life. I picked this theme from Philippians 4:11 to remind us that we must trust in God whatever the situation we find ourselves in. “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” (Philippians 4:11)
On this day when we unveiled the new theme for 2015, our study has reached chapter 14 of Gospel According to John. It so happens that this chapter has messages pertinent to our new theme. I am amazed again to find that God guides us in a mysterious way. Let us look at today’s scripture.
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:25-27)
These words were spoken by Jesus Christ. It is important to understand not only the spoken words but also the circumstances in which the words were spoken. When we understand the circumstances in which Jesus spoke these words, we can better understand the character of Jesus Christ.
After Jesus had spoken these words, he continued to speak to the disciples. At the end, he prayed to God the Father. That is recorded in 3 chapters after this, namely in chapters 15 through 17 of John. This talk might have taken around 30 or 40 minutes. And, immediately after that, at the beginning of chapter 18, Jesus is betrayed by Judah; caught by soldiers, the High Priest and Pharisees; sentenced to death; and died on the cross a few hours later.
Even if the execution on the cross were a justifiable punishment for one’s crime, it would have been terrifying to think of being hoisted onto the cross with hands and feet nailed to it. Jesus Christ was to die on the cross not for any crime he had committed, but on behalf of other people. It would have been us who had to be executed on the cross for our sins. But, Jesus Christ would die for us on the cross. And at that very moment, the disciples of 3 and a half year would all abandon him and run a way. What waited Jesus was a very lonely execution.
What we must realize here is that when Jesus said “Peace I leave with you”, Jesus already knew that these things would happen within the next few hours. He knew the captors were approaching and he knew that he was to be executed on the cross. Not only that, Jesus also knew that these disciples Jesus was talking to would desert him and run away. Knowing all that, Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (27) In view of our new theme for the year, the situation Jesus was in was not a desirable time as “in health” or “for richer” time, but it was a difficult time as “in sickness” or “for poorer”. The situation was direr than simply being sick or poor. Jesus was in the worst circumstances.
If we were to be in that situation, if we were standing in Jesus’ shoes, what would we find in our heart? Would our heart be filled with peace like Jesus? No, our heart would be overwhelmed with the feeling of uneasiness, fear, anger, sadness, and frustration. No one would want to be placed in such a situation.
Many religions in this world promise prosperity. We tend to choose and worship gods who can deliver what we desire. The religion might promise us business success or good health. Most of us who seek such things in religion do not even think about gods under normal circumstances. We tend to turn to god for help only when we are in trouble and we are confronted with unsurmountable challenges. Gods are supposed to grant our wishes. If the wishes are not granted, we are upset and say; “Where is god?”, and “There is no god.” We judge gods by what we can get out of the religion. If our wishes are not granted, we declare that there is no god. If that is how we regard gods, then we are fabricating these gods strictly for the benefit of us. Gods are supposed to serve us and not the other way around.
But, Paul talks about God in a completely different light. In fact the God Paul speaks about is the same God we are looking at this morning. Paul writes: ”But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’” (Romans 9:20)
Paul clearly states who the head of this world is. Paul reminds us who our Lord is. Paul asks: “Are the men or are we the head of this world? Or, is God the one who rules the world?” Paul points out that God rules the world and God has granted us our life and God is supporting our life. He points out that our heart continues to beat not because we control it, but strictly at the mercy of God. He says everything we have, including the life itself, have been given to us by God. In that sense, we must agree to the words of Job when he said: “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”(Job 1:21) We must humbly lower our head in front of the Lord.
As we read the Bible, and as we observe this world, we begin to understand: We begin to understand that there is an order in this world and a law governing the world. The movement of the celestial body, the rising and ebbing ocean tide, the change of seasons, the growing of the vegetation. There are orders and laws that govern all of these. There is the law of gravity. Objects fall whether or not you believe in God or not. People get sick when they digest wrong things. These are laws of nature that exist all around us. Under such laws, we all age and eventually die. These are inevitable. There are unpredictable things such as our daily encounter. We cannot escape from tribulations and frustration. These are things we must face. That is why we must encounter time of sickness and time of hardship in our life. In sickness and for poorer.
We must remember that the only son of God, Jesus Christ, had lived on this earth and faced hardships and tribulations just like any of us. Jesus got wet just like us when it rained. He suffered excruciating pain and was covered with blood when he was flogged. He got hungry just like us when he did not eat. He had to worry about money. He worried about his relations with his neighbors just like us. That Jesus speaks to us this morning:
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (27)
That was not all. At the end of series of talks, Jesus said. No, he declared clearly: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Jesus lived on this same earth. From that experience, he learned firsthand that living in this world is not easy and it was filled with tribulation and hardship. These words were recording in chapter 16. As I said earlier, after the scripture from chapter 14, Jesus continued to talk to the disciples as if to leave parting words to the disciples. These words in chapter 16 were delivered at the end. Jesus said “I have told you these things” to conclude the series of his talks. And he explained that he said these things so that we would have peace. He was giving us a parting gift of peace. He also said that the one granting this peace was the only one who had won over the trouble-filled world, namely Jesus himself.
What is peace to us living in this world? Would it be waking up leisurely at a weekend morning, enjoying morning bath, sipping a delicious cup of hot coffee, and going out shopping later? Such would be a peaceful moment for us. But, such moments of peace could be upset at the very next second. Our morning bath could be interrupted by an urgent phone call. Our moment of shopping could be marred by a hit-and-run accident on our way home. These type of peace could be very fragile indeed.
We also know that the reality is that in our life, such moments of peace are rather rare than normal. An alarm clock jolts us out of bed even when we are dead tired from physical and mental fatigue. Splitting headache might stay with us in the morning. The garage door might refuse to work as we try to leave the house. Just the thought of facing another hard day at the office might cause stomachache. Many other issues trouble us. Under such circumstances, our peace would be wiped out from our heart.
Nobody welcomes such hardships. They are painful. We try everything to cope with such situations. Such efforts might mitigate some situations, but not all. And some might even get worse. All of us are bound to face such difficult moments. Some of us try to ignore the situation or take extreme measures, making the situation worse.
I regret to say that there are some people in this world who do not desire peace. They do not hesitate to shatter peace. But, most of us want a peaceful world. All of us want our children to find a world that is more peaceful than the one we had to face. Dictionary definition of the word “peace” says “freedom from war. A temporary moment between conflicts when there is no war.” We hope that our world will find such moments of peace.
In this world, there are people who are engaged in “peace movements” and “peace activities.” Unfortunately, not all of these people claiming to seek peace are peace-minded. Some of them get angry at people who do not agree with what they want, although they still carry signs proclaiming “peace.” Some of these people might have turmoil at home when they go back to their own family.
As I said earlier, Jesus Christ left “his peace” with his disciples. We could say the peace was the only thing Jesus left with his disciples. He did not leave lands, property, or silver coins. After Jesus left, only thing that was left with the disciples was the peace that Jesus had told them about.
Imagine a father visiting his son who is living alone at an apartment far away from home. The father enters the apartment and looks around. His room is a simple room with almost no furniture. The father spends a few days at this apartment. As he lives with his son in his apartment, he begins to see what his son needs. The father realizes that the son needs more kitchen utensils. He realized that the son does not have a rice cooker. The father thought that his son might be lacking a balanced diet. On the day the father says good bye to his son, he surprises his son with a new rice cooker that he had purchased for him. This father observed how his son was living. And he saw what this son needed the most was a rice cooker. This was a parting gift from father to his son. Jesus Christ came to this world and lived there for 33 years. He was born, grew up, and lived just like any other people around him. He lived frugally. He experienced sickness; he observed family problems firsthand; he saw frictions among residents in his neighborhood; he saw work problems; he saw natural disasters; and he saw death. Jesus experienced and observed all of these things common to our human life. He was at the middle of our life and understood our problems.
Think about the father I talked about. Think about what he observed. Just think what Jesus observed in our life, what he experienced firsthand, and think what he would leave with us when he leaves. That father of a son considered what the son would need the most. And he left a gift for his son. Jesus lived on this earth among us and observed our life. He asked himself what we would need the most. He wanted to leave something we need the most. And he came to the conclusion that what he would leave with us was His Peace. Jesus, the son of God, understood us truly. He knew what we really needed. And he left His Peace with us.
Crowds and even the disciples wanted a prosperous life from Jesus. But, Jesus decided not to grant them their wish. Jesus knew that a prosperous life could change at any moment. Jesus also knew wealth could become a source of trouble in our life. Jesus knew that wealth would not bring a true happiness to people. Jesus had observed rich people of Jerusalem. They could not buy happiness with wealth. Jesus also observed that healthy people did not appreciate the health and only brought trouble to the people around him.
Jesus Christ did not try to grant us a peaceful world with no conflict. Jesus Christ wanted to grant us His Peace which would not be shaken even in the world filled with conflicts. As long as we are allowed to live freely, this world would not get rid of human conflicts. Jesus knew that. What we really need when we live on this earth is a peace of Jesus Christ that this world cannot give us.
The other day, my wife and I were hiking on the neighboring hills. As we were coming down, we saw a couple carrying an infant and pushing a stroller. Since we have climbed that hill so many times, we are familiar with the trail. We know that some section of the hill is too steep for the stroller to negotiate. Perhaps this was their first time. My wife and I felt that they would have to abandon the stroller before reaching the top of the hill. They were carrying things that would cause them trouble later. Our life is like that. We face hardships and are forced to give up many things.
But, we cannot leave our heart behind just to lighten our burden. We might forget to take keys, cellular phones, and even passports with us. But, we never forget our heart at home. Our heart is with us all the time. The heart is an integral part of us. The heart also controls us. Jesus was concerned about the state of our heart. Jesus said that he would leave “His Peace that would never change” with us.

Since Christ my soul from sin set free,
This life has been a joy to me;
And ’mid earth’s sorrows and its woe,
’Tis joy my Jesus here to know.

On land or sea, what matters where?
Where Jesus is, my joy is there.
The earth was once a bitter place
Till Jesus showed His smiling face;
Now joy’s begun within my soul,

What matters where on earth we dwell?
On mountain top, or in the dell,
In cottage, or a mansion fair,
Where Jesus is, my joy is there.
Let us hope that we will be raised up to see such a peace. If our heart has this peace in it, we could be anywhere and face anything and still can live in peace. Jesus has observed our life firsthand. Looking at our life, Jesus decided that the best gift he could leave with us was His Peace. There is no better gift that this.
Our living environment is important and we should improve it as much as possible. Living environment can influence our life in many ways. However, once the living condition is improved, we have to turn our focus on the condition of our heart. Otherwise, we will never find peace, and our heart will be empty like the Samaritan woman and Solomon.
Our new church theme for the year is “In sickness, in health, for poorer, and for richer”. When a minister talks to the newly wed, he says: “Do you love him (or her) in sickness, in health, for poorer and for richer?”
The disciples of Jesus ran away when they felt they were in danger. Their heart was in turmoil and was overcome with fear. At that moment, the resurrected Jesus appeared to Peter, one of the disciples, and asked: “Do you love me?” This was not a simple question. In fact, Peter was asked: “Do you love me under any circumstances?” What happened to Peter after this incident? Peter would never stop loving Jesus even under the most difficult circumstances. What made Peter to change so much? What was the reason?
Peter knew firsthand that Jesus himself loved Peter under the most difficult circumstances and even died for him on the cross. Peter believed in the words of Jesus who had said: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” and “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Long before this, the prophet Isaiah had a clear vision and had written in Isaiah 53 this way:
But he [Jesus Christ] was pierced for our transgressions, he [Jesus Christ] was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
We do not know what awaits us in this year. However, we should look up to Jesus in sickness, in health, for poorer, and for richer and find peace that Jesus had left for us. Such life would be a wonderful and eye-opening experience. Let us take step after powerful step toward the high peak. The peace we will find would be more valuable than anything else.Let us pray.
