今週からイエス・キリストの誕生を待ち望む、アドベント（待降節）が始まります。教会ではこれから毎日曜日にローソクを一本ずつ灯しながらクリスマスを待ち望みます。
聖書は『時が満ちた』（マルコ１章１５節）という一声により、イエス・キリストと共に始まる新しい時の到来を告げました。この「時が満ちた」という言葉は、偶然の時の訪れを告げる言葉ではなく、そこには「その時」にいたるまでの「時の経過（プロセス）」があったことが暗示されています。
イエス・キリストの誕生は、そこにいたるまでの諸々の出来事を経て、時が満ちて起きました。そして、このことはそのまま私達の人生にも当てはまります。私達が現在、向き合っているものが何であれ、そのこと一つだけで私達は自分の人生をジャッジすることはできません。私達の物語はこれまでも、そしてこれからも神と共に紡いでいくものなのです。

神と共に物語を紡ぐ

サンクスギビングディーも終わり、今日からアドベントとなり、私達はこれからイエス・キリストの誕生を待ち望みます。イエス・キリストの誕生と共に新約聖書が始まるとするなら、このことは旧約聖書から新約聖書へと時が移り変わったことを意味します。
旧約聖書には包み隠すことのない赤裸々な人間の姿が記録されています。目を塞ぎたくなるような姿がそこには記録されています。そう、そこには夫婦の問題、親子の問題、民族間の問題が山積みです。今日、私達が見聞きする醜聞と何ら変わらない人の姿が旧約聖書には溢れているのです。
テクノロジーは大きく進歩しましたが、人の心ということになりますと、私達はそこに進歩を認めることができません。声に応答して電気をつけてくれるテクノロジーを人間は開発しましたが、声をかけても、機嫌が悪ければ返事をしないのが、私達、人間です。暖房機器が厳しい冬から私達を守ってくれるようになりましたが、人間はその温もりの源なるガスのパイプラインを破壊すべく、ミサイルを打ち込んでいます・・・。
旧約聖書における最重要な出来事は、神様が人間に「律法」を与えたということです。その律法に生きるのなら、私達は道を踏み外すことなく、幸いな人生を送れるはずでした。しかし、結論から言いますと人間は、その律法を守ることができませんでした。私達には神の恵みと共に歩むことができるというチャンスが与えられていたのですが、人は数千年におよんだそのチャンスを生かすことができませんでした。
このことにより明らかになったことは、人間には律法を守る心、もっといいますと守ろうとする心が、そもそもないということでした。そうです、旧約聖書は私達の心には、自分ではどうすることもできない深い闇があることを明らかにしたのです。聖書、伝道の書には味わい深い言葉が記されています。
伝道の書３章１節−４節
『天の下のすべての事には、季節があり、すべてのわざには時がある。生まれるに時があり、死ぬるに時があり、。。。泣くに時があり、笑うに時があり、悲しむに時があり、踊るに時がある』
聖書は、その最初のページ、その第一行に「はじめに神は天と地とを創造された」という言葉を記しています。天地の創造により、その時から私達の世界に「昼」と「夜」が生まれ、それにより「時間」が生まれ、以来、私達はこの「時」の中に生きています。
旧約聖書の最後に記されているマラキ書の時代から、イエス・キリストの誕生と共に始まる新約聖書の時代まで、その年月は約４００年あり、その間について聖書は何の記録も残していません。すなわち、その間、神の言葉を預かり、それを語り告げる預言者が誰もいなかったということです。後の人はその４００年を「沈黙の時代」と呼びます。
先の伝道の書の言葉を借りていいますのなら、その時は「黙るに時があり」（伝道の書３章７節）ということになりましょうか。しかし、その４００年の沈黙も破られる時がきました。そのことを告げるイエス・キリストの第一声がガリラヤから世界に響き渡りました。
マルコ１章１５節
『時は満ちた、神の国は近づいた。悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ』
イエス・キリストのこの言葉は「私は今、あなたたちの元に来た。時は満ちたのだ、神の国は近づいたのだ。悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ」ということです。このイエスの言葉を念頭に、パウロは後にこう書き記しました。
ガラテヤ４章４節
『時の満ちるにおよんで、神は御子を女から生まれさせて、おつかわしになった』
「時が満ちた」(The set time had fully come) という言葉は、既に始まって、継続されていることが、いよいよ、あるところに到達したということです。一滴の水がポタッ、ポタッとコップに落ちるのを想像してみてください。雀の涙のような一滴の水は時間をかけて、その器を徐々に満たしていきます。そして、最後に「あっ、こぼれる！」という時が来、その最後の一滴が落ちると同時に、水は器から溢れ出ます。まさしく、そのような後にも先にもない時が満ちた瞬間、その時に神はイエス・キリストをこの地に生まれさせたのです。
アドベントの最初の日曜日である今日、私達の前にある一本目のローソクに点火がなされました。来週には、このローソクに加え、もう一本のローソクにも点火をし、１２月２５日のクリスマスサンディーには全てのローソクに火が灯されます。
そう、私達はその時に刻一刻、近づいているのです。その時が満ちるのを、私達は待ち望みつつ、これからの日々を過ごすのがアドベント、待降節です。それでは、イエス・キリストの誕生において「時が満ちた」ということは具体的にどのようなことなのでしょうか。
イエス様が生きた時代というのはどのような時代だったのでしょうか。イエス・キリストはなぜ、あの時代に生まれたのでしょうか？あの時より３００年早く生まれ、あるいは、１０００年後に生まれるということではいけなかったのでしょうか？「時が満ちた」という言葉は、そこに至るまでの時の経過があって初めて、言いうることができる言葉なのです。この言葉は、その前の歴史と切り離すことができないのです。
イエス様が生まれた時、それはローマ皇帝カイザルによる世界統一がなされていた時代でした。そう、それは先に触れました「沈黙の時代」に起きたことなのです。
この場合の世界というのは文字通り全世界を示すのではなくて、当時の地中海を中心とした世界のことです。それまでの世界は小さな国がひしめき合い、互いに虎視眈々とけん制しあって、国と国の行き来が難しい時代でした。
故にそのような状況でイエス・キリストがメッセージを発しても、それは一地域限定のメッセージで、しばらくその地域にとどまるだけで、やがては消えてしまったことでしょう。
ローマ帝国の支配については賛否両論ありますが、確かに言えることはこの際立った力をもった帝国支配が、その力ゆえに、その全域において治安を保ったということです。
人々はかつて越えることができなかった国境を越えて自由に四方八方に向かうことができました。考えてみてください、もしアメリカにある各州が独立しており、互いの州境では銃口が向けられており、他州に入ることができない、そこを通過することができないとしたら。西海岸にある物資を東海岸に届けることは困難を極めます。東海岸で発せられたメッセージが西海岸に届くことはないでしょう。しかし、この国がアメリカ合衆国として統治されているゆえに、私達はカリフォルニアからアリゾナ、そしてテキサスと物資は滞りなく運ばれていきます。そのメッセージはニューヨークからカリフォルニアへと届くことでしょう。
もし、イエス様の誕生がこの時より２００年早ければ陸上においては野蛮な民族同士の争いにより福音は閉ざされていたでしょう。海上にはひしめく海賊がおりましたから、航海すら出来なかったことでしょう。もし、数百年遅ければ、北方のゲルマン民族の脅威が人々に福音を受け入れる耳などもたせなかったことでしょう。
このことについてドアの開閉というものがあるとしますのなら、まさしくイエス様の誕生と、後にそのキリストのメッセージを携えて世界に出ていく者達のために、その時だけ、このドアは開いたのです。
ローマ帝国といえばその建築技術の高さで有名です。私達は歴史の授業でその驚くべき建築物について学びました。ローマの皇帝カイザルが何よりも力を注いだのは「道」を作るということでした。
その情熱と功績は「全ての道はローマに続く」という諺となるほどに徹底しておりました。カイザルの元で何万人もの労働力が額に汗してローマ帝国のために、カイザルの軍隊を運び、カイザルのための物資を運ぶためにこの道は作られたのです。
全世界に網の目のようにこの道は続いていたのです。しかし、その時の誰が、その道を使って、パウロやキリストの弟子たちが福音を携えて世界に出て行くことを想像したたでしょうか。カイザルも実際にその街路工事のために石を運んだ石工達も、自分達が各地にはりめぐらした道が、まさか福音伝達のために用いられるとは思わなかったことでしょう。
この世界統一をなしたローマ帝国はそれまでバラバラであった周りの国々に、もう一つの影響を与えました。それはローマ帝国がラテン語と共にギリシア語を世界の言語に据えたということです。
当時、多くの人達がギリシア語を第二の言葉として用いていました。ギリシア語はアテネの街頭でもガリラヤの丘でも、ローマ、スペインでも使われました。そうすることにより、ローマ帝国は驚異的な経済発展を勝ち取ることができたのです。
新約聖書の著者達はこのギリシア語を用いて、ある者は福音書を、ある者は手紙を書きました。今の時代、この世界言語の役割を担っているのは英語となりましょう。もし国際的なビジネスをするのであれば英語は絶対に必要な言葉とされるでしょう。ポルトガル語を話すブラジル人と日本語を話す日本人の間で、英語によって取引きがなされることにより、そのビジネスはすすみ、開発が共同でなされることでしょう。
イエス様の時代、言葉を媒体として伝えられる福音に関して、各地方にそれぞれ異なった言葉があったとしたら、福音を伝えられることは困難を極めたことでしょう。その時、人々はまさかギリシア語という言語が全世界に福音を伝えるための欠かせない力になっていたことを想像しなかったことでしょう。fギリシア語という言葉に託された福音は世界にあまねく広まったのです。
ここまでお話しましたようにローマ帝国は確かに繁栄と巨大な影響力をもち、そこにはしばらくの平和があったのですが、その背後にはそのために犠牲になっている者達がたくさんいました。
国力と繁栄はありましたが、ローマの支配がおよぶ地域の街路地に住む多くは奴隷でした。繁栄の背後にはそれを支えるための重税や重労働、行き渡らない食料事情があり、そこには押しやられた問題が山積みとなっていました。
繁栄を享受するのは少数の者達で、多くの人達の表情や心には明日への不安が深く刻まれていました。繁栄の中に生きる者たちは、考えつく悪事をし、その情欲に生きました。
当時のローマの華やかさは凄まじいものだったようです。皇帝や高官の屋敷においては、毎晩のように宴会が催され、この時に今流行の美食ということに目が向けられました。彼らの食卓には世界中の珍味が並べられ、彼らはそれらを一通り食べた後に、わざとそれらを吐きだし、腹を空腹にして、また次の珍味を胃袋に入れたというのです。また彼らは退屈をしのぐために巨大なコロシアムを造り、そこに人間と猛獣を入れ、どちらかが死ぬまで戦わせ、その流血を鑑賞しました。
これらの狂気を伴う虚楽はイコール、人々の心の渇きを意味していました。このような時に神様はイエス・キリストをこの地に生まれさせたのです。それがローマの貴族の心であっても、エペソやコリントの路地裏に住む者であっても、彼らの心には深い闇があり、自分では何を持っても満たすことができない渇きがあったのです。このような意味で時は満ちていたのです。
「時は満ちた」という言葉は、これらのことが全て出揃った、準備が整ったということを意味するのです。そうです、こうしてキリストが誕生する時が、いよいよやって来たのです。神は泣く子も黙るカイザルをもその手中に治め、この瞬間のために備えさせ、キリストはこの地上に生まれたのです。
ですから私達はキリストの誕生をたまたま起きた偶然と捉えてはなりません。キリストの誕生にいたるまでの時の経過を見過ごしてはなりません。キリストの誕生は一つ一つのプロセスを経てから、神の御計画の中で、この地上に起きたのです。
そして、ここで私達はとても大切な事に気がつかされます。それは今まで、皆さんにお話ししてきたことは全て、私達が２０２２年を生きているから知ることができることなのだということです。当時の人達で「時が満ちた」ということを理解していた人はいなかったのです。
なぜ？
なぜなら、彼らはその只中にいて、必死に生きていたのですから。「今、時が満ちたのだ」ということは、そこに至るまでのプロセスを俯瞰、すなわち上から全体を眺めなければ、知り得ないことだからです。当時のパレスチナに居た者達には当然、その全体像を知る術がなかったのです。しかし、その全体像を完全に知っておられるお方がいました。そのお方こそ、私達が信じ、崇めている神様です。このお方は初めから終わりまで、私達の歴史を手中に治めておられるお方だからです。「時が満ちた」という宣言は、その時の前後を全て知っている全知全能の神だけが言いうる言葉なのです。
主にある皆さん、このことは私達の人生にも大切なことを語りかけてくることにお気づきでしょうか。今日のメッセージタイトルは「神と共に物語を紡ぐ」です。
先にお話ししましたように、イエス・キリストの誕生を知るためには、そこにいたるプロセスを知る必要があったように、私達の人生を知るためにも、私達の物語を知り、それを受け止める必要があります。
私、そして皆さんの物語は、私達の人生の中の一つ一つの出来事が集まったものです。その一つ一つの出来事に対して私達は色々な評価をします。そして、私達以外の人達も、私達が今、向き合っている出来事を見て、評価を下すことがあります。しかし、本来、私達の人生はその個々の出来事によって決まるようなものではありません。それらはその物語の一部なのです。
思い起こしましょう。アブラハムは７５歳の時に、行く先も知らずに故郷を出たことを。荒野でモーセが十戒を受け取ったことを。ダビデはイエス・キリストの先祖として生まれたことを。ソロモンがエルサレムに神殿を建て、エステルがユダヤ民族を救ったことを。バビロンの異教徒ネブカデネザルが南ユダ王国を滅し、ユダヤ人は捕囚の民となったということを。その時、彼らは自分の身に起きている出来事がその先、どこに導かれていくのかを知りませんでした。しかし、実際のところ彼らが向き合っていた出来事はその一つ一つが、キリストの誕生へと導かれるために不可欠なことだったのです。
私達はこの聖書の物語に目を留めるべきです。私達の神は物語を紡ぐお方であることを知るべきです。そして、このことに思いが向く時に、私達は気がつかされるのです。
それは、この同じお方が私達の人生の物語をも紡いでおられるということを。神こそが私達の物語を始めたお方であり、私達の物語の終わりを見届けてくださるお方です。このことの代わりになる人間はこの世界に誰一人いません。このお方だけが、私達の物語の全てを見ておられるお方なのです。ローマ８章２８節の約束を私達は知っています。
ローマ８章２８節
神は、神を愛する者たち、すなわち、ご計画に従って召された者たちと共に働いて、万事を益となるようにして下さることを、わたしたちは知っている。
神様は私達と共にはたらいて、万事が益となるように、私達の物語を紡いでくださるのです。主にある皆さん、私達はこのことを信じて、日々、主と共に、自分の物語を紡いでいるのだということを意識して、生きるのです。
この事実に従えば、もし、皆さんの過去に解決不可能な出来事や、理解できない出来事があったとしても、それに対して結論を急ぐ必要はありません。神様はこれらの出来事を私達と共にはたらいて、それらをも込みで私達の最善の物語を紡いでくださるお方なのですから。
全知全能の神と共に生きるということは、私達の人生の全容を見ておられるお方のご計画の中に、自分の人生が置かれていることを知ることです。このお方が最善と思われる時と方法によって、私達の人生を導いておられるということを信じ、このお方に全てをお委ねすることです。
もし今、私達の願いが叶わないということがあったとしても、それが私達の人生の旅路のプロセスの一つであると受け止めることは、私達にとって、とても大切なのです。あなたは自分の人生に起きた出来事に対して、自分でそれをジャッジしているかもしれません。しかし、それは時期早々のジャッジメントです。誰かがあなたの人生をジャッジしているかもしれません。私達はそのことで心悩む必要はありません。ジャッジしている彼らはあなたの人生に責任を取らないのですから。私達が徹することは今も、これからも神の御手のはたらきから心の目を離さないことです。
神と人間が紡いだ聖書の物語を私達が知る時に、私達の物語の中にも確かに、神は介入されているのだということを知ることができるのです。クリスマスについて、ヨハネはその日のことを、こう表現しました。
ヨハネ３章１６節
神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。
この言葉は私達にイエス・キリストの「十字架」を思い起こさせます。しかし、同時に私はこの言葉からイエス・キリストが寝かされた「飼葉桶」を思い起こします。
そうです、クリスマスこそが、実際に神がその一人子イエスを私達にお与えくださった時なのですから。
神の一人子が人の物語の中に身を投じてくださった。そんなとんでもないことをされた神の動機は何なのか。それは私達に対する神の愛です。この人の歴史の只中に、時が満ちてお産まれくださったイエス様は私達に約束されました。
マタイ２８章２０節
「見よ、わたしは世の終りまで、いつもあなたがたと共にいるのである。」
私達の人生を始められた神は、この世が終わるまで、私達とともにいてくださる。この神の愛と共に、神と共に、イエス・キリストと共に、聖霊と共に、神が与えてくださっている日々を生きていこうではありませんか。主と共に私達の物語を紡いでいこうではありませんか。お祈りしましょう。

Thanksgiving Day is over, Advent starts today, and we are now looking forward to the birth of Jesus Christ. If the New Testament begins with the birth of Jesus Christ, this means that time has moved from the Old Testament to the New Testament.
The Old Testament records the naked human condition without concealment.
There are images recorded there that make you want to close your eyes. Yes, there are a lot of marital problems there, parent-child problems, and problems among ethnic groups.The Old Testament is full of images of people no different from the ugly things we see and hear today.
Technology has advanced greatly, but when it comes to the human heart, we cannot recognize progress there. Humans have developed technology that turns on the light in response to our voices, but we, humans, will not respond even if called upon, if in a bad mood. Heaters protect us from the harsh winters, but humans are launching missiles to destroy the gas pipelines that are the source of that warmth . . .
The most important event in the Old Testament is that God gave humans “the Law”. If we lived by that law, we would not have gone astray and would have lived a blessed life. However, as it turns out, humans have failed to keep that law.
We were given the chance to walk in God’s grace, but people have failed to take advantage of that opportunity for thousands of years. What this revealed was that humans do not have the heart to keep the law, or more specifically, the heart to try to keep it in the first place. Yes, the Old Testament revealed that there is a deep darkness in our hearts that we cannot control. In the Bible, there are tasteful words recorded in the book of Ecclesiastes.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-4
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, . . . a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.
The Bible states on its first page, its first line, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” With the creation of the heavens and the earth, “day” and “night” were born in our world, which gave birth to “time,” and we have been living in this “time” since then.
From the time of the book of Malachi at the end of the Old Testament to the time of the New Testament, which begins with the birth of Jesus Christ, there are about 400 years, and the Bible leaves no record of any of those years. In other words, during that period, there was no prophet who received God’s word and proclaimed it. Later people call those 400 years the “silent period”.
To borrow from the words of the previous book of Ecclesiastes, it would mean that time was “a time to be silent” (Ecclesiastes 3:7). However, the time came to break that 400-year silence. The first voice of Jesus Christ announcing this fact echoed out from Galilee to the world.
Mark 1:15
“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
These words of Jesus Christ mean, “I have now come to you. The time has come. The Kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe in the good news.” With these words of Jesus in mind, Paul later wrote,
Galatians 4:4
“But when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,”
“The set time had fully come” means that something that has already begun and is continuing has finally reached a certain point.Imagine a drop of water dripping, dripping into a cup. A single drop of water, like a sparrow’s tear, gradually fills a vessel over time. And finally, the “Oh, it’s going to spill!” moment comes, and as soon as the last drop falls, the water overflows from the vessel. Indeed, it was at that unprecedented moment that the set time had fully come, that God caused Jesus Christ to be born on this earth.
Today, being the first Sunday of Advent, the first candle in front of us was lit. Next week, in addition to this candle, another candle will be lit, and all candles will be lit on Christmas Sunday, December 25.
Yes, we are getting closer and closer to that time. We spend the coming days of Advent, the season of waiting, looking forward to the fullness of that time. So, what exactly does “the set time had fully come” mean in the birth of Jesus Christ?
What was the time period like in which Jesus lived? Why was Jesus Christ born in that time period? Couldn’t He have been born 300 years earlier or 1000 years later than then? The phrase “the set time had fully come” is a phrase that can only be said with the passage of time leading up to it.
These words cannot be separated from the history that preceded it.
When Jesus was born, it was a time of world unification under the Roman Emperor Caesar. Yes, that is what happened during the “silent period” I mentioned earlier.
The world in this case does not literally mean the whole world, but the world centered around the Mediterranean Sea at that time. Until then, the world was full of small nations, all vying with each other for control, making it difficult to move back and forth between nations.
Therefore, even if Jesus Christ had proclaimed a message in such a situation, it would have been very difficult for it to be brought to the neighboring countries; it would have been a message limited to one region, and it would have remained in that region for a while and eventually disappeared.
The rule of the Roman Empire is controversial, but what can be said for certain is that this empire, with its outstanding power, removed all previous boundaries between nations, and because of this power, it maintained security throughout its entire territory.
People were free to go in all directions, crossing borders that were once impossible to cross. Think about it, what if each state in the U.S. were independent, and guns were pointed at each other’s state borders, you could not enter another state, and you could not pass through there. Getting supplies on the West Coast to the East Coast would be extremely difficult. A message emanating from the East Coast would never reach the West Coast. However, because this country is governed as the United States of America, we are able to transport goods from California to Arizona and then to Texas without difficultly. A message will reach from New York to California.
If Jesus had been born 200 years earlier, the Gospel would have been closed to the world on land due to barbaric ethnic strife. The sea was so crowded with pirates that it would have been impossible for them to even sail. If it were a few hundred years later, the threat of Germanic tribes in the north would have made people less receptive to the Gospel.
If there is such a thing as opening and closing doors in this matter, then and only then did this door open for the very birth of Jesus and for those who would later go out into the world with the message of that Christ.
The Roman Empire is famous for its architectural technology. We learned about its amazing architecture in our history class. The Roman emperor Caesar’s foremost focus was to build “roads”.
His passion and achievements were so thorough that there is the saying “All roads lead to Rome”. Under Caesar, tens of thousands of laborers with sweat on their foreheads made these roads for the Roman Empirein order to carry Caesar’s troops and supplies.
These roads continued like a net around the entire world. But who at that time could have imagined that Paul and the disciples of Christ would use those roads to go out into the world with the Gospel? Neither Caesar nor the stonemasons who actually carried the stones for the road construction would have thought that the roads they had built would be used to spread the Gospel.
The unification of the Roman Empire had another impact on the previously disparate nations around it. It was the Roman Empire that established Greek as the language of the world, along with Latin.At that time, many people used Greek as a second language. Greek was used on the streets of Athens, on the hills of Galilee, in Rome, and even in Spain. By doing so, the Roman Empire was able to achieve tremendous economic development.
The authors of the New Testament used this Greek language, some to write the Gospels, and some to write letters. In this day and age, the role of this world language will be English. If you are doing business internationally, English will be considered an absolutely necessary language. English-language transactions between Portuguese-speaking Brazilians and Japanese-speaking Japanese will facilitate business, as well as joint development.
In Jesus’ time, it would have been extremely difficult to share the Gospel if each region had a different language, for the Gospel was shared through the medium of words. At that time, people would never have imagined that the Greek language would have been an indispensable force for the spread of the Gospel throughout the world. The Gospel in the Greek language spread throughout the world.
As I have told you, the Roman Empire certainly had prosperity and enormous influence, and there was peace there for a while, but in the background there were many people who sacrificed themselves for it.
Although it was powerful and prosperous, many of the people living on the streets in areas under Roman rule were slaves. Behind the prosperity were heavy taxes and hard labor to support it, a situation of food not being well distributed, and there was a mountain of problems that had been pushed aside.
Only a few enjoyed the prosperity, and anxiety about tomorrow was deeply etched in the faces and hearts of many. Those who lived in prosperity did the evil they could think of and lived in their lusts.
The pomp and splendor of Rome at that time seems to have been tremendous. Banquets were held nightly at the residences of emperors and other dignitaries, and it was at these banquets that the current trend toward gastronomy was born. Their tables were filled with delicacies from all over the world, and after they had eaten their fill, they would deliberately spit them out, leaving their bellies empty and their stomachs filled again with the next delicacy.
They also built a huge coliseum to stave off boredom, where they pitted man and beast of prey to fight to the death, and watched the bloodshed.
These crazy foolhardy pleasures pointed to the thirst in people’s hearts. It was at such a time that God brought Jesus Christ into the world. Whether it was the heart of a Roman nobleman or a back-alley dweller in Ephesus or Corinth, there was a deep darkness in their hearts, a thirst that they could not satisfy with anything they had.
In this sense, the set time had fully come.
The phrase “the set time had fully come” implies that all these things are in place, that they are ready. Yes, thus the time for the birth of Christ had finally arrived. God took the weeping child and even the silent Caesar under His control and prepared for this moment, and Christ was born on this earth.
Therefore, we must not view the birth of Christ as a coincidence that happened by chance. We must not overlook the passage of time leading up to the birth of Christ. The birth of Christ occurred on earth according to God’s plan after each process.
And here we are reminded of something very important. It means that everything I have told you so far is what we can know because we are living in the year 2022. No one at that time understood that “the set time had fully come”.
Why?
Because they were in the midst of it, and were struggling to survive. “Now, the set time had fully come” can only be known through a bird’s eye view of the process leading up to that point.Those who were in Palestine at the time naturally had no way of knowing the whole picture.
But there was One who knew the whole picture perfectly. He is the God we believe in and worship. He is the One who controls our history from beginning to end. Only an omniscient and omnipotent God, who knows everything before and after that time, could declare, “The set time had fully come.”
Dear people in the Lord, have you noticed that this speaks to something important in our lives as well? The title of today’s message is “Weaving Stories with God”.As I mentioned earlier, just as we needed to know the process that led to the birth of Jesus Christ, we need to know our story and accept it in order to know our life.
My, and your stories, are a collection of each event of our lives. We evaluate each of these events in different ways. And people other than us may look at the events we are now facing and make an assessment. However, by nature, our lives are not determined by those individual events.
They are part of the story.
Let us recall. Abraham was 75 years old when he left his hometown, not knowing where he was going. That Moses received the Ten Commandments in the wilderness. That David was born as an ancestor of Jesus Christ. That Solomon built the Temple in Jerusalem, and Esther saved the Jewish people. That the pagan Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had destroyed the Kingdom of Southern Judah, and the Jews were taken into captivity. At that time, they did not know where the events happening to them would lead them beyond that point. However, in reality, each of the events they were facing was essential to lead to the birth of Christ.
We should keep our eyes on this biblical story. We should know that our God is the One who weaves the story.And when our thoughts turn to this, we are made aware.
It is this same One who is also weaving the story of our lives. God is the one who began our story and will see us through to the end of our story.No one else in this world can take the place of this. This is the One who alone sees all of our stories. We know the promise of Romans 8:28.
Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
God is working with us to weave our stories so that all things work together for good. People in the Lord, we are to believe this, and daily live our lives with the awareness that we are weaving our own stories together with the Lord.
Based on this fact, if there are unresolvable or incomprehensible events in your past, there is no need to jump to conclusions about them. God is the one who works with us through these events, and weaves our best story with them included.
To live with Almighty God is to know that our lives are placed in the plan of the One who sees the whole of our lives. We must trust that He is guiding our lives in the time and way that He deems best, and entrust everything to Him.
If our wishes are not being fulfilled now, it is very important for us to accept that this is part of the process of our life’s journey.You may be judging the events that have occurred in your own life. However, it is a premature judgment. Someone may be judging your life. We do not need to be troubled by it. Those who judge you are not responsible for your life. What we must do now and in the future is to keep our mind’s eye on the work of God’s hands.
When we know the biblical story weaved by God and humans, we can know that God is indeed intervening in our story as well.
Regarding Christmas, John described the day in this way.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
These words remind us of the “cross” of Jesus Christ. But at the same time, I am reminded of the “manger” in which Jesus Christ slept in.Yes, because Christmas is the time when God actually gave us His only begotten Son, Jesus.
God’s only begotten Son has thrown Himself into the story of man. What is God’s motive for doing such an extraordinary thing?It is God’s love for us. Jesus, who was born in the fullness of time in the midst of human history, made a promise to us.
Matthew 28:20
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
God, who began our lives, will be with us until the end of the world. Let us live the days God is giving us with this love of God, with God, with Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit. Let us weave our stories together with the Lord. Let us pray.

３）マルコ１章１５節とガラテヤ４章４節に書かれている「時は満ちた」(The set time had fully come)という言葉にはどんな意味がありますか。「時が満ちた」という言葉を使って例文を一つ、作ってみましょう。
４）今日、メッセージの中で、時が満ちてイエス・キリストがこの地に誕生したということについて、どのような意味で、その時が満ちたということが説明されましたか。ヒント：ローマ帝国の支配、全ての道はローマに続く、ギリシア語の普及、当時の社会情勢・・・。

７）『神は、神を愛する者たち、すなわち、ご計画に従って召された者たちと共に働いて、万事を益となるようにして下さることを、わたしたちは知っている』（ローマ８章２８節）。この御言葉の「共に働いて」という言葉から、私達は何をなすべきでしょうか。神様のなさる領分とは何でしょうか。
