『キリストを基として、全身はすべての節々の助けにより、しっかりと組み合わされ結び合わされ、それぞれの部分は分に応じて働き、からだを成長させ、愛のうちに育てられていくのである』（エペソ４章１６節）。
今日、日本人のみならず大谷翔平の名前を多くのアメリカ人は知っています。説明するまでもなく彼はベーブルース以外に前例のない、二刀流の選手です。彼が今、していることはメジャーリーグの歴史を塗り替えるようなことです。打ってよし、投げてよし、走ってよし、彼のタラントは申し分ありません。
それでは、その彼が属するエンジェルスは首位を独走しているでしょうか。いいえ、現在、このチームは下から二番目の順位にいます。なぜでしょうか？言うまでもありません、野球は一人でするものではないからです。チームとしてバランスがとれていなければゲームは成り立ちません。大谷が投げ、打ち、走り、さらには試合後のベンチの掃除をし、最後に球場の戸締りをして帰ったとしても、エンジェルスは勝つことができません・・・。

神に喜ばれる教会（１０）：健やかな体は自ずと成長する

先日、ある本を読んでいて一節の言葉に目が留まりました。
「ルールを知っている者が勝利を得ることができる」
確かにそうだなと思いました。野球に勝つためにはルールを知らなければなりません。ヒットを打っても三塁方向に走ったり、ゴロを捕球しても一塁に投げなければ、野球にならず、ゲームに勝つことはできません。
車を運転することにもルールがあります。「Do Not Enter」というサインを無視して、フリーウエイを逆走するのなら、自分の命のみならず、誰かの命を奪い取ります。
その翌日、朝のデボーションでテモテ第二の手紙を読んでいて、一つの御言葉に目が止まりました。『また競技をするにしても、規定に従って競技をしなければ、栄冠は得られない』（2テモテ２章５節）
パウロもここで愛弟子テモテに向かい、規定に従って生きることの大切さを書いています。「規定」とは「ルール」でありますが、パウロがここで言わんとしていることは野球や運転のルールではありません。
それは私達の人生を生きていくにあたって、私達が知らなければならないルールです。皆さんの人生にはこのルールがありますか。
ルールは私達の言動に先立ってあるべきものです。ルールは私達がどんな言動をすべきなのかを決めるものだからです。私達の今日はこれまでの決断と、それに伴う言動の集大成なのです。今、私達はこれまで歩んできた人生に対して、どのような評価をしているでしょうか。
もし栄冠を受け取ることができるルールがあるということを私達が知っているのなら、私達がまず取り組むべきことは、そのルールを知り、そのルールに従い生きるということではないでしょうか。そして、忘れてはならないことは、そのルールは不完全な私達が作るべきものではなく、私達を作られた全知全能の神が私達のために定めたルールであるべきなのです。
先週の日曜日、本多牧師は教会は私達が一つとなり、互いに愛し合う場所であるということをお話しくださいました。その話されたことは先生が個人的に望んでいることではなく、先生の持論でもありませんでした。それは聖書に書かれていることであり、それは神様が私達の教会に向けて与えてくださっているガイドラインです。
私達は「神に喜ばれる教会」というテーマで毎週の礼拝をもっていますが、このことも私達の考えに従って考えることではなく、これも神様が教会に対して定めておられるルール、ガイドラインに従ってなされるべきことなのです。
そして、そのガイドラインとはすなわち、聖書の御言葉なのです。新約聖書にあるエペソ書はパウロが書いた書であり、彼はここで教会について触れています。
11そして彼は、ある人を使徒とし、ある人を預言者とし、ある人を伝道者とし、ある人を牧師、教師として、お立てになった。12それは、聖徒たちをととのえて奉仕のわざをさせ、キリストのからだを建てさせ、13わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである。14こうして、わたしたちはもはや子供ではないので、だまし惑わす策略により、人々の悪巧みによって起る様々な教の風に吹きまわされたり、もてあそばれたりすることがなく、15愛にあって真理を語り、あらゆる点において成長し、かしらなるキリストに達するのである。16また、キリストを基として、全身はすべての節々の助けにより、しっかりと組み合わされ結び合わされ、それぞれの部分は分に応じて働き、からだを成長させ、愛のうちに育てられていくのである。エペソ４章１１節－１６節
この箇所は開口一番、こう言っています。
「そして彼は、ある人を使徒とし、ある人を預言者とし、ある人を伝道者とし、ある人を牧師、教師として、お立てになった」（１１）。
このところにおける「彼」とは「イエス・キリスト」であります。なわちイエス様ご自身がある人を「使徒とし、預言者とし、また牧師、教師としてお立てになった」というのです。「イエス・キリストがお立てになった」とはどういうことなのでしょうか。
あまり他の職業で聞くことがない言葉だと思いますが、牧師や宣教師になろうとする者が「召命（英語で言うところのCalling）を受けました」と言っていることを聞くことがあります。「召命、コーリングに従う」ということは、どういうことかと言いますと、その人が神様から牧師、宣教師になるようにという呼びかけに応答して牧師になるということです。
ですから牧師になるにあたり、まず問われることは、その人がどれだけの聖書知識をもっているとか、その人がどれだけの教会生活を送っているのかということではなく、その人が神様からのコーリングを受けているか否かということであり、もしそれがなければ牧師としてのはたらきを始めることも、それを続けることも難しいということなのです。実際にイザヤやエレミヤ、またイエスの弟子達、全て神様に従おうとする者達は皆、そのようなコーリングを受けて、神様にその生涯を捧げました。
このエペソ書にはそのように神様からコールされた牧師がすべきはたらきは何かということを記されています。１１節から１３節を見てみましょう。

ここを読みます時に牧師がすべきことが二つあることが分かります。すなわち それは１２節の「聖徒達を整え、奉仕のわざをさせ、キリストのからだを建てさせる」ということであり、そして１３節の「わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである」ということなのです。
今日は、この順番を入れ替えて、この二つのことについてお話しさせていただきます。
まず最初に「わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついにキリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである」（１３）ということです。
長男がミドルの頃、空手道場に行っていました。先生はイラン人でした。中東では空手が人気のようです。この先生はイラン人でありながら「一、二、三、正座、礼」と流暢な日本語を使って教えていました。イランにおりながら、先生もこの日本語を言いながら空手を学んだのでしょう。
どの空手道場にも決まった型（かた）というものがあり、生徒は繰り返し、来る日もくる日もこの型を学びます。一つの型が終われば、次に、そして次にと進み、それに伴い帯の色も変わっていきます。
空手といえば黒帯ですが、言うまでもなく黒帯は一月、二月練習をしたからといって習得できるようなものではありません。空手を習う者は三日前の自分と今日の自分に違いを見出すことはできません。しかし、それが二年、三年となりますと目を見張る変化がそこに見られます。
そこに至るために空手道場はやすむことなく、クラスを開いています。生徒はコツコツとそのクラスに通い続け、春夏秋冬、先生から型を繰り返し学びます。このような練習の光景を見学させていただき、その様は牧師のはたらきに似ているなと思いました。
空手の型が飽きたから、新しい型を作ってくれという人はいません。彼らは毎週、同じことを繰り返します。聖書の言葉は何度も聞いているから、真新しい言葉をつけ加えてくれという人はいません。私達も繰り返し、同じ聖書の言葉を聞きます。
型を何千回も繰り返した人は、いかなる時にも体が反応して、その型のように動けるようになります。同じ御言葉を何度も聞く者達の心、奥深くにその御言葉は浸透し、やがてその人の生き方そのものがその御言葉に従ったものとなります。
このことなくして、今、見ている御言葉が成就することはないのです。
「わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである」（１３）
牧師がまずすべきことは、どうしたらここに達することができるかを絶えず祈り、考え、そのための機会を皆さんに提供することです。
皆さんは毎日、多くの情報を得ていることでしょう。考えてみてください。一週間に一度、この礼拝で３０分、聴く聖書の御言葉は、その後、一週間、聴き続ける世の中の情報にかき消されていませんか。日曜日に主の言葉を聞いておきながら、残りの日々はネットやニュースで目にする膨大な情報に心が奪われていないでしょうか。今の私達の生き方に影響を与えているのは主の御言葉でしょうか、それとも世の諸々の情報でしょうか。
空手は来る日も来る日も型を学びます。
もう一度、申し上げますが、３、４日、数ヶ月ではその人の上達は分かりません。しかし、何年かするのなら、その型はその人の心身と一つとなっていることが分かります。
見る人が見れば、その人が長い間、コツコツと練習を積んできたことが分かります。
見る人が見れば、それがどこの流派だということが分かります。その流派に属する者達は皆、同じ型を知っているからです。彼らは全世界、どこに行っても同じ型を学んでいるのです。
私達も同じ聖書の言葉から日々コツコツ学び、互いに神様に祈ることにより、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達する（１３）のです。
このことは教会にとって生命線となるほどに、とても大事なことです。なぜ生命線なのか。その理由というものをパウロはこの後、１４節以降に書き加えています。
「こうして私達はもはや子供ではないので、だまし惑わす策略により、人々の悪巧みによって起る様々な教の風に吹きまわされたり、もてあそばれたりすることがなく、15愛にあって真理を語り、あらゆる点において成長し、かしらなるキリストに達するのである」
パウロが書いておりますことは、私達がイエス様への信仰、イエスを知る知識の一致に至ることができるのなら、私達はもはや子供のままでいることはできずに、私達の集う教会は私達をだまし惑わすこと、人の悪巧みによる様々な教え、風評というものに、心が奪われて、もてあそばれることがなくなるというのです。
ここで私達に問われることは「本当に私達はイエス・キリストを知っているのか」ということであり、そのために「あなたはイエスを知ろうとしているか」ということです。
教会はコミュニティーセンターではありません。教会は株式会社ではありません。教会は共通の趣味をもつ者達が集まる場所ではありません。
世の中の知恵を私達は参考にすべきです。人間としての常識も大切にされるべきです。しかし、私達はそのような世の知恵や常識を学ぶために教会に来ているのではなくて、
「神の子を信じる信仰の一致」と「彼を知る知識の一致」に到達することを目標として、ここに集ってきているのです。”教会に連なる兄弟姉妹が、そこに到達するために牧師は力を注ぐ、それが牧師が教会に留まっている理由です。
もし、イエス様への信仰の一致とイエス様を知る知識の一致がなければ、私達は自分の肉の思いだけに支配されて「自分がこうしたい、こうしてもらいたい」というような個人的な希望や感情を教会に求めるようになります。
あるいは「これまで自分はこうしてきました」というような個人的経験やこだわりによって教会は動かされます。誰かのプライドが教会の進むべき道を閉ざすことさえあるのです。
主にある皆さん、私達が寝ても冷めても祈り願うべきことは、イエス様というお方はどういうお方であり、またそのイエス様が私達に望まれている生き方はどのようなものなのかということを聖書を通して知り、それを継続して自分の心と体に落とし込んでいくことなのです。そして、このことを共有できる兄弟姉妹が一人、また一人と教会に加わっていくことなのです。
パウロは「わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し・・・」（１３）と言っています。
そう「すべての者が」とここに書かれています。はたしてこのことを達成できる教会があるのでしょうか。それは並大抵のことではありません。実際に達成できるかどうかは分かりません。しかし、私達はここを目指すべきです。
牧師に委ねられている二つ目のことをお話しましょう。
それは「聖徒達を整え、奉仕のわざをさせ、キリストのからだを建てさせる」（１２）ということです。この言葉はその後に続く、今までお話してきました「神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達すること」と区別されるものではありません。
なぜなら信仰と知識の一致というのは、頭で学ぶ、心で受け止めることだけでは得ることができないことだからです。それは「実践」によってはじめて私達のものとなるのです。
頭でだけで理解して、実践が伴わない人が言う言葉には力がありません。教会は魂と知性で御言葉を聴く場所であり、そして、その心に受け止めた言葉に従い、イエス様がそうであったように、神と人に実際に仕えるということを具体的に実践する場所です。
そこでは頭では解決していることが、実際の生身の人間の間で解決することがどんなに難しいことかということが分かることでしょう。
そのところで私達は主の前に出て、主のお心を祈り求めることでしょう。このプロセスを経ていく先に私達がいうところの成熟があるのです。これらをスキップして成熟に至ることはできないのです。このことに生きる時に聖霊様は「イエス・キリストとはどのようなお方であるのか」ということを私達に教えてくれるのです。
パウロは聖書の中で度々、教会を「キリストのからだなる教会」と呼んでいます。このことについてパウロはコリント人への第一の手紙１２章において私達の体を取りあげながら、絶妙な譬と共に詳しく説明しています。
コリント第一の手紙１２章１２節―１８節、
12 からだが一つであっても肢体は多くあり、また、からだのすべての肢体が多くあっても、からだは一つであるように、キリストの場合も同様である。13 なぜなら、わたしたちは皆、ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人も、奴隷も自由人も、一つの御霊によって、一つのからだとなるようにバプテスマを受け、そして皆一つの御霊を飲んだからである。14 実際、からだは一つの肢体だけではなく、多くのものからできている。15 もし足が、わたしは手ではないから、からだに属していないと言っても、それで、からだに属さないわけではない。16 また、もし耳が、わたしは目ではないから、からだに属していないと言っても、それで、からだに属さないわけではない。17 もしからだ全体が目だとすれば、どこで聞くのか。もし、からだ全体が耳だとすれば、どこでかぐのか。18 そこで神は御旨のままに、肢体をそれぞれ、からだに備えられたのである。
私達が一つの御霊による洗礼を受けて、この教会につながるということは私達がこのキリストの体なる教会の体の一部となるということです。このことは私達、全ての者が皆、目ではく、また足ではないということを意味します。そして、言うまでもなく、目は足にはなれませんし、足も目にはなれないのです。目も足も神様が御旨のままに配置してくださったものなのだとここに書かれていますから、私達がすべきことはそれぞれが置かれている所で主のために心を尽くすことです。

しかし、このチームに属する者達がそれぞれの置かれているポジションに力を注ぎ、そこで結果を残すことができるのならチームの状況は変わります。そして、そのことは選手のみならず、トレイナーや、選手の野球道具を管理する者達、このチームのオーナーにいたるまで、このチームに属する諸々の者達が、それぞれの持ち場で、心を一つにして、互いの足りないところを助け合いながら、できる最善を成していくのなら、このチームは勝利を呼び寄せることができるでしょう。
そして、その喜びは格別な喜びなのです。この喜びにあずかるために彼らは苦労を顧みずに、自分の思いと力を注ぐのです。今日、見ておりますエペソ書でパウロはこう記しています。
キリストを基として、全身はすべての節々の助けにより、しっかりと組み合わされ結び合わされ、それぞれの部分は分に応じて働き、からだを成長させ、愛のうちに育てられていくのである（エペソ４章１６節）。
キリストの体に属する器官である私達は、それぞれの分に応じてはたらき、そうすることによって自ずとキリストの体なる教会は成長します。そして、それを育んでいくのは何かといいますと互いに切磋琢磨していく競争とか、常に完全を求めるような完璧主義や、徹底的な合理性ではなくして「愛」だとエペソ書はいうのです。
そう、私達キリスト教徒がいつも口にしている「愛」です。肩が凝っているのなら、手が率先して肩をもみます。熱が出れば、足が病院まで体を運びます。
右手でトマトを抑えながら、同じ右手で包丁を握ることはできないのです。左手が助けなければ、右手は怪我をするでしょう。両手で料理をすることによりおいしい料理を楽しむことができるでしょう。左手だけで車のハンドルを握っていれば、いつか事故を起こし、肉体全てを損なうでしょう。ハンドルは両手で握ることにより安全は確保されます。こうすることにより、体の各器官は互いに支え合い、それゆえに健康は保たれて、肉体は育まれていくのです。
以前、私は腰痛が激しい時にカイロプラクティックに行きました。その時に体が歪んでいる、骨盤が曲がっていると医師から言われました。そして、そうなると、あなたの問題は腰だけの問題ではなく、足や内臓にさえも影響が出るだろうと言われました。体が歪んでいると、それをかばおうとする器官に過剰な負担がかかり、そのところにも支障が出るからです。
もしキリストの体なる教会のある器官だけに負担がかかりますと、そのところをすり切れるほどに酷使しますと、キリストの体なる教会全体は弱ります。そして言うまでもなく、それは神様の心ではなく、それは神様の悲しみとなります。
しかし、反対にキリストの体なる教会の各器官がその役割を果たしていくとき、互いに補い合い、支え合っていく時にその体は健康になります。そして、これは神様が定めた万物の法則でありますが、健康であるものは、自ずと成長していくのです。
これらのことを可能にすること、すなわち互いの器官を助けよう、大切にしようとする、いたわろうとする思い、それはすなわち、私達がいつも話している、聞いている「愛」なのです。これも言うまでもなく、このことは愛なる神様の御心であり、それを神様は喜んでくださいます。
ローマ１２章３節－８節においてパウロはこう書いています。
3わたしは、自分に与えられた恵みによって、あなたがたひとりびとりに言う。思うべき限度を越えて思いあがることなく、むしろ、神が各自に分け与えられた信仰の量りにしたがって、慎み深く思うべきである。4なぜなら、一つのからだにたくさんの肢体があるが、それらの肢体がみな同じ働きをしてはいないように、5わたしたちも数は多いが、キリストにあって一つのからだであり、また各自は互に肢体だからである。6このように、わたしたちは与えられた恵みによって、それぞれ異なった賜物を持っているので、もし、それが預言であれば、信仰の程度に応じて預言をし、7奉仕であれば奉仕をし、また教える者であれば教え、8勧めをする者であれば勧め、寄附する者は惜しみなく寄附し、指導する者は熱心に指導し、慈善をする者は快く慈善をすべきである。
言うまでもなく全てのはたらきを私達ができるはずはありませんし、そうすべきではありません。私達は自らの生活のバランス、年齢や健康状態というものもしっかりと配慮しなければならないでしょう。パウロは言っています。

神様が私達一人一人に与えられている信仰の量りに従い、私達はキリストの体なる一つの器官として神と人に仕えるべきだとパウロは言いました。私達ひとりひとりがこの教会のために出来ることがあり、そのためにこのキリストの体なる教会は皆さんを必要としているのです。
パウロは断言しています。私達はそれぞれ神様から与えられている異なった賜物（ギフト）をもっている。それはみなが違う。ある人は自分が与えられているものは小さなことなのだと思うかもしれません。
しかし、そんなことは神様の前に全く問題ないのです。あの有名なタラントの譬をご存知ですね。１タラント、２タラント、５タラント、を主人から託された僕たち。あそこに記されている主人、すなわち神様は僕達に与えられているタラントが１か２か５かというようなその大きさ、多さのことは全く気にしていません。
あの譬話でただ一つ、問われるのは私達が神様から与えられているものを用いたか否か、ということそれだけなのです。私達が与えられていること、私達ができること、それを用いていきましょう。キリストの体なる教会を皆で建て上げましょう。
今日、皆さんのお手元にキリストの体なる私達の教会に現在、必要な奉仕リストをお配りしています。コロナの影響もあり、私達の教会ではコロナ以前の半分に満たない人しか、まだ教会に戻ってきていません。そのような中、正直に申し上げなければなりませんが、２割、３割の方達がこの日曜のはたらきに関わっています。
このことは大きなチャレンジであり、今日、お話しましたようにこのことを続けていくのなら、このキリストの体は健康を損ねてしまうことでしょう。しかし、私達がこのことを受け止めて、各々が互いに支え合うことができるのなら、このチャレンジを乗り越えて行くことができると思います。
このリストには「奉仕の条件」というものを書き記しました。なぜなら教会でなされる奉仕には教会に対する責任をともなうものや、教会を知るものでなければ従事できないものもあるからです。でもその条件に該当しない方でもお声をおかけください。私達は一同、私達にできることをもって、このキリストのからだなる教会を建てあげていくことができるようにと願っております。
主は私達のためにその手と足に釘を打たれました。主は今日、私達を通してその御心を成されます。皆でイエス・キリストの手になろうではありませんか、足になろうではありませんか。
このことは私達が、主への感謝と喜びと共に互いに励まし合って、なされていくべきことなのです。主はそれを喜んでくださることでしょう。
お祈りしましょう。
A Church Pleasing to God (10): A Healthy Body Grows by Itself

The other day, I was reading a book, and a phrase caught my attention. “He who knows the rules can win.”
I thought that was certainly true. To win a baseball game, you have to know the rules.
If you get a hit but run toward third base, or catch a ground ball but do not throw to first base, it would not be baseball, and you cannot win the game.
Driving a car also has rules.If you ignore the “Do Not Enter” sign, and drive on the wrong side of the freeway, you are taking not only your own life, but someone else’s life as well.
The next day, as I was reading 2 Timothy during my morning devotion, one verse caught my attention. “Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules.” (2 Timothy 2:5).
Paul also wrote here to his beloved disciple Timothy, about the importance of living according to the rules. A “rule” is a “rule,” but what Paul is talking about here is not the rules of baseball or driving.
It is the rules we must know as we live our lives. Do you have these rules in your life?
Rules should precede our words and actions. They determine what we should say and do. Our today, is the culmination of all the decisions we have made, and the words and deeds that have accompanied them. How do we now evaluate the life we have led?
If we know that there are rules by which we can receive the victor’s crown, then the first thing we must do is to know the rules, and live by following those rules.
And we must not forget, those rules should not be made by us who are imperfect, but should be rules established for us by the Almighty God who made us.
Last Sunday, Pastor Honda spoke about how the church is a place where we are to become united as one and love one another. What was spoken was not what he personally wanted, nor was it his own theory. That is what is written in the Bible, and that is the guideline that God has given us for our church.
We have been speaking on the theme “A Church Pleasing to God” during our weekly worship services, but this too is not something we think about according to our own ideas. This should also be done according to the rules and guidelines that God has established for the church.
And that guideline, in other words, is the Word of the Bible. The book of Ephesians in the New Testament was written by Paul, and here he mentions the church.
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
This passage opens by saying.
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, (11)
It says here, “Christ himself”, that is “Jesus Christ”. In other words, Jesus himself gave some people as “apostles, prophets, pastors and teachers.” What does it mean to say, “Jesus Christ gave”?
It is not a word you hear very often in other professions, but you may hear a pastor or would-be missionary say, “I have received a calling.” What is meant by “following a calling,” is that a person becomes a pastor or missionary, in response to God’s call to become a pastor or missionary.
Therefore, in becoming a pastor, the first question is not how much biblical knowledge a person has, or how long a church life that person has had. It is a question of whether or not a person has received a calling from God, without which it would be difficult to begin or continue pastoral ministry. In fact, Isaiah and Jeremiah, as well as the disciples of Jesus, all those who have sought to follow God, received such a calling, and dedicated their lives to God.
The book of Ephesians describes the work a pastor who has been called by God should do. Let’s look at verses 11-13.
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
When you read this, you will see that there are two things that a pastor should do. That is, it is as it says in verse 12, “to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up”, And in verse 13 where it says, “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Today, I would like to switch the order and talk about these two things.
First of all, let’s look at “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
When my oldest son was in middle school, he was going to a karate dojo. The sensei was Iranian. Karate seems to be popular in the Middle East.
This teacher, although Iranian, taught using fluent Japanese, “Ichi, ni, san, seiza, rei”. While in Iran, this sensei must have learned karate while saying this in Japanese.
Every karate dojo has its own set of kata (forms), which students learn over and over again, day after day. Once one kata is completed, they move on to the next, and then the next, and so on, and the color of the belt changes accordingly.
We think of a black belt when talking about karate, but needless to say, a black belt is not something that can be acquired after a month or two of practice. A karate practitioner cannot tell the difference between the person he was three days ago and the person he is today. However, after two or three years, there is a remarkable change.
To get there, karate dojos offer classes without a break. Students continue to attend classes and learn kata from their sensei throughout the spring, summer, fall, and winter. I was able to observe this kind of practice, and thought that it was similar to the work of a pastor.
No one asks you to create a new karate kata because they are tired of it. They repeat the same thing week after week. No one asks us to add a new word to the Bible because they have heard it so many times. We hear the same Bible words over and over again.
A person who has repeated a kata thousands of times will be able to react and move like that kata at any given moment. God’s Word penetrates deep into the hearts of those who hear the same Word over and over again, and eventually their very way of life will be in accordance with that Word.
Without this, the Word that we are looking at now will not be fulfilled.

The first thing a pastor should do is to continually pray and think about how we can reach this point, and provide opportunities for everyone to do so.
I am sure you all get a lot of information every day. Think about it.
Do the words of the Bible that you hear for 30 minutes once a week at this worship service, get drowned out by the world’s information that you continue to hear during the rest of the week?
While hearing the word of the Lord on Sundays, are we not distracted by the vast amount of information we see on the internet and in the news on the other days?
Is it the Word of the Lord that influences the way we live today, or is it the various information of the world? In karate, you learn kata day in and day out.
Once again, I reiterate, that a person’s improvement cannot be noticed in 3 or 4 days, or even a few months. However, if you do it for a number of years, you will find that the kata has become one with the person’s body and mind.
A careful observer can see that the person has been practicing diligently for a long time. A careful observer can tell which karate school they are from. That is because those of the same school know the same kata. They learn the same kata everywhere they go in the world.
We, too, can day by day learn from the same words of the Bible, and pray to God for each other, to reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God.
This is so important that it is the lifeline of the church. Why is it the lifeline? Paul adds the reason for this in verses 14 and following.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
What Paul is writing about is that if we can come to the unity of faith and knowledge in in Jesus, Then we will no longer remain as children, and the church in which we gather in will not be deceived and misled by the deceitfulness of people. It means that we will no longer be so enthralled and entertained by rumors.
The question for us here is, “Do we really know Jesus Christ?” And to that end, “Are you trying to know Jesus?”
The church is not a community center.The Church is not a corporation. The church is not a place where people with common interests gather.
The wisdom of the world should be our reference. Common sense as human beings should also be valued. However, we do not come to church to learn such worldly wisdom and common sense.
We are gathering here with the goal of reaching “unity in the faith of the Son of God” and “unity in the knowledge of Him.” The pastor puts his efforts into helping the brothers and sisters in the church to reach that point, which is why the pastor remains in the church.
If there is no unity of faith in Jesus and knowledge of Him, We will be ruled only by the thoughts of our own flesh, and we will seek the church for our personal hopes and feelings, such as “I want to do this, or I want this done for me.”
Or the church will be driven by personal experience and commitment, such as “I have always done things this way.” Someone’s pride can even block the path the church should take.
People in the Lord, what we should be praying for whether awake or while asleep, is to know who Jesus is and what He is like, And learn what kind of life Jesus wants us to live through the Bible, so by continually doing this it is imbedded into our mind and body.、And then, one by one, brothers and sisters who can share this in common with us will be added to the church.
Paul says, “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God . . .”.
Yes, it says “all”. Is there a church that can accomplish this? That is no small feat. I don’t know if we can actually achieve it. However, we should aim for this.
Let me talk about the second thing that a pastor should do.
It is “to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” These words are not to be differentiated from what follows, which we have been talking about: “reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God.”
This is because the unity of faith and knowledge is not something that can be obtained only by learning with the head and accepting with the heart. It is only through “practice” that it becomes ours.
Words that people understand only in their heads, but do not put into practice have no power.
The church is a place to listen to the Word with the soul and the intellect, and then, according to the words received in the heart, is a place to put into concrete practice actual service to God and man, just as Jesus did.
There you will see how difficult it is to resolve between real, live people, the things that you have resolved in your head. You will be shown your own heart.
In that place we will come before the Lord, and pray and seek His will. The destination of this process is what we call maturity. You cannot reach maturity by skipping these steps. When we live in this, the Holy Spirit will show us “who Jesus Christ is.”
Paul frequently refers to the church in the Bible as “the church, the body of Christ.”このPaul explains this in detail with an exquisite analogy in 1 Corinthians 12, talking about our bodies.
1 Corinthians 12:12-18,
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be (1 Corinthians 12:12-18).
When we are baptized by one Spirit and connected to this church, it means that we become part of the church, the body of Christ. This means that we, all of us, are not all eyes and not all feet. And of course, the eye cannot become a foot, and the foot cannot become an eye. Because it is written here that the eyes and the feet are arranged by God’s will, we should wholeheartedly do our best for the Lord where each of us is placed.
Today, many Americans, as well as Japanese, know the name Shohei Ohtani. He is a two-way baseball player, which is unprecedented except for Babe Ruth. Ohtani is the kind of player who, other players selected as an All Star, light up their eyes like a child in seeking his autograph.
In fact, what he is doing right now is rewriting major league history. He hits well, he pitches well, he runs well, and his talent is impeccable. However, are the Angels, to which he belongs, in first place? No. Currently, this team is in second to last place. Why?
Obviously, it is because baseball is not a one-man game. The game cannot be played unless you are balanced as a team. If Otani pitched, hit, ran, and even cleaned the benches after games, and finally locked the doors of the stadium and left, the Angels would not win.
However, if those on this team can put their efforts into their respective positions and achieve results there, the team’s situation will change. And, if not just the players, but the trainers, the people who maintain the players’ baseball equipment, and even the owners of this team, the various members of this team, in their respective positions, were to unite their hearts, help each other where each one lacks, and do the best they can, then this team will be able to bring forth victory.
And that joy is an exceptional joy. To partake in this joy, they pour out their thoughts and efforts without regard to the difficult work. In the book of Ephesians, which we are looking at today, Paul writes
16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work (Ephesians 4:16).
As parts belonging to the body of Christ, we work according to our own portion, and as we do so, the body of Christ, the church, will naturally grow. And what nurtures this is not competition and friendly rivalry, nor always seeking perfection as a perfectionist or exhaustive rationality, but in the book of Ephesians it says is “love”.
Yes, it is “love” that we Christians are always talking about. If your shoulders are stiff, your hands take the initiative and rub your shoulders. If you have a fever, your feet will carry you to the hospital.
You cannot hold a tomato with your right hand while holding a knife with the same right hand. If the left hand does not help, the right hand will be injured. By cooking with both hands, you will be able to enjoy delicious food. If you hold the steering wheel of a car only with your left hand, one day you will have an accident, damaging your entire body. Safety is ensured by holding the steering wheel with both hands. In this way, the parts of the body support each other, and thus health is maintained and the body is nurtured.
I used to go to a chiropractor when I had severe back pain. At that time, the doctor told me that my body was misaligned and my pelvis was crooked. And when that happens, he said, your problem will not only affect your lower back, but also your legs and even your internal organs. This is because when the body is misaligned, it puts excessive strain on the parts that try to compensate for it, and those areas are also affected.
If only one part of the body of Christ is burdened, if that part is overworked to the point of wear and tear, the entire body of Christ, the church, will be weakened. And of course, that is not God’s heart, but that will be His sorrow.
However, on the contrary, when each part of the church, the body of Christ, fulfills its roles, when they complement and support each other, that body becomes healthy.。And this is the law of all things that God has ordained, that what is healthy will grow of its own accord.
What makes these things possible, that is, the desire to help, to care for, and to treat with kindness each part, is the “love” we are always talking about and hearing about. Of course, this is the will of a loving God, and He is pleased with it.
In Romans 12:3-8, Paul writes
3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully (Romans 12:3-8).
Obviously, we cannot and should not do all the work on our own. We must also take into consideration the balance of our own lives, age, and health condition. Paul says.
3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
Paul says, according to the measure of faith God has given each of us, we should serve God and man as a part of the body of Christ. There is something each of us can do for this church, and this church, the body of Christ, needs all of you.
Paul affirms. We each have different gifts given to us by God. It is different for everyone. One might think that what is given to them is small.
However, such things are of no concern before God. You know that famous parable of the talents. The servants were entrusted by their master with 1 talent, 2 talents, and 5 talents. The master, who is mentioned there, That is, God, was not concerned about how many talents were given, whether it was 1, 2, or 5.
The only question in the parable is whether or not we have used what God has given us. Let us use what we have been given and what we can do. Let us all build up the church, the body of Christ.
Today, we have handed to you a list of current ministry needs for our church, the body of Christ Due in part to the influence of Covid-19, less than half of the people we had before the pandemic who were in our church, have yet to return to in-person worship services. In this context, speaking truthfully, 20 or 30 percent of the people are involved in this Sunday’s work.
This is a great challenge, and if we continue to do this, as I have talked about today, it will be detrimental to the health of this body of Christ. However, if we can accept this challenge, and each of us can support one another, I believe we can overcome this challenge.
On this list, there is written “Condition” as one of the column headings. This is because some of the ministries in the church involve responsibilities to the church, and things that can only be done by those who know the church. But even if you don’t meet those conditions, please express your interest. We all hope that we can build up this body of Christ, the church, with what we can do.
The Lord had nails hammered into His hands and feet for us. Today, the Lord is doing His will through us. Let us all become the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.
This should be done by us encouraging one another with thanksgiving and joy in the Lord. The Lord will be pleased with that.
