私達の教会は二つの言葉を有する一つの教会です。このことを「足かせ」とするのか「祝福」と受け止めるのか、聖書は何と言っているのでしょうか。

神に喜ばれる教会（４）：二つの言葉、一つの教会

アメリカは英語を公用語としている国です。この国にやってくる移民は、そのことを当然、理解しています。彼らは必死に英語を習得しようとします。しかし、これがなかなか大変です。英語を第二か国語にしている者達にとりまして、英語で苦労した話というのは一つや二つではないでしょう。

皆さんもきっとそんな体験をお持ちかと思います。でも、諦めがつきます。なぜなら英語は私達にとりまして第二か国語だからです。英語よりも少しはまともに話せる母国語があることが慰めです。
しかし、実際のところ、母国語を話していても色々な問題があります。同じ言語を話しているのに互いの心が通じ合わないのです。
創世記１１章にはバベルの塔の出来事が記されています。聖書を読んだことのない人でも、このバベルの塔の出来事を聞いたことがあるかと思います。
1 全地は同じ発音、同じ言葉であった。2 時に人々は東に移り、シナルの地に平野を得て、そこに住んだ。3 彼らは互に言った、「さあ、れんがを造って、よく焼こう」。こうして彼らは石の代りに、れんがを得、しっくいの代りに、アスファルトを得た。4 彼らはまた言った、「さあ、町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう。そしてわれわれは名を上げて、全地のおもてに散るのを免れよう」。5 時に主は下って、人の子たちの建てる町と塔とを見て、6 言われた、「民は一つで、みな同じ言葉である。彼らはすでにこの事をしはじめた。彼らがしようとする事は、もはや何事もとどめ得ないであろう。7 さあ、われわれは下って行って、そこで彼らの言葉を乱し、互に言葉が通じないようにしよう」。8 こうして主が彼らをそこから全地のおもてに散らされたので、彼らは町を建てるのをやめた。9 これによってその町の名はバベルと呼ばれた。主がそこで全地の言葉を乱されたからである。主はそこから彼らを全地のおもてに散らされた。（創世記１１章１節－９節）
なんと当時の人間は全て同じ発音、同じ言葉を話していたというのです。そんな彼らが天に届くようにと塔を建て、自分達の名を上げようと企てたというのです。
彼らは神が人間に与えた自然の素材を加工して、れんがを作りました。そのことにより、高い塔を作ることが可能になりました。この技術革新が彼らを傲慢にさせたのでしょう。自分は万能なのだと大きな勘違いをしたのでしょう。
彼らは己の力で神に近づき、自分の名声を響かせようと考えたのです。
人の思い、欲は止めえないものです。神様は言われました「彼らがしようとすることは、もはやとどめ得ない」と。この人々に対して神様がなさったことは、神ご自身が上から彼らの元に下って行って、彼らの言葉を乱し、互いに言葉が通じないようにされたというのです。
彼らは天に届くように思いきり、背伸びをしました。しかし、神はさらにその遥か上にいるお方です。神は地に這いつくばるかのようにして塔を建てている人間の元に降りてこられ、彼らの言葉を乱したのです。
主にある皆さん、私達は自分の分際をわきまえなければなりません。自分が何者であるか、そして神がどのようなお方であるか、心に刻まなければなりません。
この時からもはや人は同じ発音、同じ言葉で語り合うことなく、世界の言語は多種多様になったと言われます。このことゆえにこの後、彼らは全地に散らされていきました。
ここに記されている「彼らの言葉を乱した」（confused their language）という言葉には、別の意味も含まれています。つまり、この言葉の乱れとは、彼らがそれぞれ異なった言語で話し始めたということと同時に、彼らの心と心がますます通じなくなったということを象徴しているということです。
以前は「さあ、町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう」と言えば、彼らの心は堅く結びついたのです。しかし、この時から彼らが「あれをしよう」「これをしよう」と意見を交換しても、そこに混乱が生じるようになったのです。
「それは俺がすべきことではない」「お前がやっていればいいんだ」というような論争があちこちで起こったことでしょう。”お互いがお互いの言い分に耳を貸さない強情さ、相手の提案と忠告を聞くことができない頑なさというものが人間の根深い問題となっていったのです。
私達には皆、母国語があります。同じ母国語を話す者同士であれば、互いに通じ合う言葉を語ることができます。しかし、そこに本当の心と心のコミュニケーションがあるでしょうか。
なぜ、同じ言葉を話しているのに、相手の言葉は自分に届かず、自分の言葉は相手に伝わらないのでしょうか。それはこのバベルの民たちが「町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう」と言ったように、「天に届くように自分が神のようになりたい」というような願望が私達の心にあるからではないでしょうか。
「自分が神のように・・・」ということは、すなわち「自分を中心として生きる」ことであり、それはすなわち「あなたの話は聞かないよ」「俺には俺の考えがあるのだから」というような思いがその心にあるということす。
それはあのアダムとエバが禁断の実を食べた時に通じる言葉であり、それは人間の罪の源と呼ばれます。その心が互いにあるのなら、もはやその言葉には人の心と心をつなげるものはありません・・・。
あなたはあなたの妻、夫と心の交流ができていますか。あなたはあなたの子や親と心が通じ合っていますか。教会で私達は通じ合う言葉を語っているでしょうか。
私達は同じ言葉を話しながら、互いの心を理解できずに暮らしています。戦争はいつ、起こるのでしょうか。言葉のコミュニケーションがとれなくなった時、人は武器を握るのです。
これらのことを思う時に、私達は考えます。「はたして私達はこのような状態から脱することができるのだろうか？」と。”創世記で起きたこの出来事は、そのまま手つかずで私達の前に放置されているのでしょうか。
いいえ、この一件は後に再び、聖書の中で取り上げられているのです。そのことが前回も見ました使徒行伝の２章に記されているのです。
その背景は先週、本多牧師が語られたように、イエス様が弟子達に「エルサレムに留まり、聖霊を待ち望め」と言われた言葉に彼らが従い、エルサレムにとどまり、ひたすら祈っていた時に起こりました。
私の恩師はかつて言いました。その時、彼らは悔い改めの祈りを互いにしていたのだろうと。何せイエスの弟子たちはイエスが十字架にかかる数時間前まで「俺達の間で誰が一番偉いのか」と言い合っていたのですから。
「誰かに仕える」なんてことは彼らにはとんでもない話で、その彼らの目の前で彼らの足を洗われたイエス様の姿と手の温もりを彼らが忘れるはずがありません。あの時の心の内を互いに知る仲間が今、自分の目の前にいる。確かに彼らは自ずと悔い改めの祈りへと導かれたことでしょう。
主にある皆さん、聖霊は心砕かれた者達の上に注がれます。
その時、彼らは天に届く塔を作ろうとはしていませんでした。その時、彼らは教会から、福音を地の果てにまで伝えるという神のプロジェクトに取りかかろうとしていたのです。その時に何が起きたのでしょうか。少し長いのですがお読みします。
1五旬節の日がきて、みんなの者が一緒に集まっていると、2突然、激しい風が吹いてきたような音が天から起ってきて、一同がすわっていた家いっぱいに響きわたった。3また、舌のようなものが、炎のように分れて現れ、ひとりびとりの上にとどまった。4すると、一同は聖霊に満たされ、御霊が語らせるままに、いろいろな他の国の言葉で語り出した。5さて、エルサレムには、天下のあらゆる国々から、信仰深いユダヤ人たちがきて住んでいたが、6この物音に大ぜいの人が集まってきて、彼らの生れ故郷の国語で、使徒たちが話しているのを、だれもかれも聞いてあっけに取られた。7そして驚き怪しんで言った、「見よ、いま話しているこの人たちは、皆ガリラヤ人ではないか。8それだのに、わたしたちがそれぞれ、生れ故郷の国語を彼らから聞かされるとは、いったい、どうしたことか。9わたしたちの中には、パルテヤ人、メジヤ人、エラム人もおれば、メソポタミヤ、ユダヤ、カパドキヤ、ポントとアジヤ、10フルギヤとパンフリヤ、エジプトとクレネに近いリビヤ地方などに住む者もいるし、またローマ人で旅にきている者、11ユダヤ人と改宗者、クレテ人とアラビヤ人もいるのだが、あの人々がわたしたちの国語で、神の大きな働きを述べるのを聞くとは、どうしたことか」。（使徒行伝２章１節－１１節）。
その時、突然、激しい風が吹いてきたような音が天から起ってきて、一同が座っていた家いっぱいに響き渡りました。また舌のようなものが、炎のように分れて現れ、ひとりびとりの上に止まりました。
すると一同は聖霊に満たされて、御霊が語らせるままに、色々の他国の言葉で話し始めたと聖書は記しています。
時はちょうど五旬節の祭りの時、当時エルサレムには天下のあらゆる国々から信仰深いユダヤ人たちが移り住んでいました。It was right at the time of the
彼らの出身地がここにはたくさん記されていますが、これはいわゆるディアスポラと呼ばれる各国に離散したユダヤ人達の出身国のことで、そのユダヤ人たちが、エルサレムに集まってきていたのです。バベルの出来事で人々は世界に散らされたのです。
しかし、この使徒行伝の時代にはその散らされた者達が再びエルサレムに集まり、移り住んでいたのです。そして、彼らは聖霊に満たされて、自分の生れ故郷の言葉を話し始めたというのです。彼らは何を話したのでしょうか。この光景を見ていた人達は言いました。
「あの人々がわたしたちの国語で、神の大きな働きを述べるのを聞くとは、どうしたことか」（１１）
バベルの時代、彼らはどうしたら自分達が神の頂きに届くことができるかと話し合いました。しかし、使徒行伝の時代、彼らの上に聖霊が臨んだ時、彼らは「神の大きな働き」について語り合ったのです。
彼らがその時、共有した思いは自分達の素晴らしさではありません。彼らの神の物語を共有し、それぞれの生まれ故郷の言葉、すなわち彼らの母国語で神をほめたたえたのです。
ここに書かれていることは明確なメッセージを私達に語りかけます。それは、各々の母国語で神の大いなる働きをほめたたえる者達が共に集まることを神は喜ばれ、そこから最初の教会は建て上げられていったということです。
「お前の話などは聞いていられない。なんで俺がお前と働かなければならないんだ」バベルの塔では、そんな光景がいたるところで起きたことでしょう。
それに対して聖霊を受けた使徒たちはどうなったでしょうか。この後の使徒行伝２章４２節－４７節を見ると、バベルの塔とは異なる者達の姿をそこに見ることができます。
42そして一同はひたすら、使徒たちの教を守り、信徒の交わりをなし、共にパンをさき、祈をしていた。43みんなの者におそれの念が生じ、多くの奇跡としるしとが、使徒たちによって、次々に行われた。44信者たちはみな一緒にいて、いっさいの物を共有にし、45資産や持ち物を売っては、必要に応じてみんなの者に分け与えた。46そして日々心を一つにして、絶えず宮もうでをなし、家ではパンをさき、よろこびと、まごころとをもって、食事を共にし、47神をさんびし、すべての人に好意を持たれていた。そして主は、救われる者を日々仲間に加えて下さったのである（使徒行伝２章４２節－４７節）。
彼らは言葉や文化は違えども、一緒にいて、心を一つにして神を褒め称えていました。彼らは喜んで互いに仕えていたのです。
ここに記されている彼らの姿は、互いの言葉に耳を貸さない人達を言い表すものではありません。ここには心を一つにし、食事を共にし、彼らの母国で神について語り、神を讃美する者たちがいたのです。
かってのように、自分達の名をあげようという思いはそこにはなく、ただ主が彼らが成して下さったことに対して、感謝と共に、喜んで応答しようとする彼らの姿をそこに見ることができます。
主にある皆さん、その感謝と喜びは各々に神様が与えられた言語を通してなされていたのです。そして、その彼らの姿を見た人達は彼らに好意を持ったというのです。皆さん、この私達の姿に、私達の本来の伝道があるのではないでしょうか。
バベルのプロジェクトは続きませんでした。そこには問題があったからです。私達の教会のビジョンも私達の家庭の一致も同じ危険性をもっています。
しかし、私達の心が砕かれて、そこに聖霊が臨む時に、私達の心には相手の言葉を聞いて受け入れる心と、相手の心に届く言葉を語る力が与えられるのです。
主にある皆さん、私達の語る言葉は互いに通じ合っているでしょうか。私達は夫婦や親子の間でこのような言葉を語っていますか。教会で私達が語り合う言葉は互いの心に届いていますか。
世界には多くの啓発本なるものがあります。私も目を通すことがあります。なるほどと心に留めることもあります。しかし、最近、つくづく思います。これらの１００冊の啓発本から得ることよりも、聖霊に満たされて、御霊の実、すなわち愛、喜び、平和、寛容、慈愛、善意、忠実、柔和、自制の実を結ぶことの方がはるかに私には大切だと。
もし、この世界が一つの言語だったら。そうであったなら私達は毎週、日本語と英語を翻訳する必要はないでしょう。私はカリフォルニアキッチンで２度も望んでいないブロッコリーのピザを食べることなどなかったのです（日本語には「食べ物の恨みは大きい」という諺があります）。
しかし、私達の世界はこのバベルの塔以来、異なる言葉を語ります。言葉の違いは私達の思想にも大きな影響を与えますので、私たちの間には違いが生じます。
エルサレムに集まってきた者達に神様が与えた最初のチャレンジは、その違いを聖霊の一致によって乗り越え、彼らのその生き様を通して、世界に福音を伝えるようにということだったのです。
今日、この最初の教会が受け止めたのと同じチャレンジが与えられている教会は多くはありません。驚くなかれ、私達の教会はその数少ない教会の中の一つなのです。
主にある皆さん、私達はこのことを私達の「足かせ」と受け取りますか。それとも「祝福」と受け止めるのでしょうか。
私達は神様の不思議な摂理のもと、このサンディエゴという街に導かれてやってきました。多くの皆さんにとりまして、その摂理は皆さんの親、祖父母にまでさかのぼることでしょう。私達は神の恵みにより、彼らの祈りにより、クリスチャンとなりました。
人生は一度限り、私達の地上でのこの教会生活、私達はそこで何を見、何を聞いていくのでしょうか。私達の人生を振り返る時、私達はどんな教会生活を思い起こすのでしょうか。そして、どんな教会を次の世代に残すのでしょうか。
初代教会の祝福を現代に見ることができるチャンス、このチャンスを受け止めていくことができたら、あなたはそのように願いませんか。全ての大いなる事柄は、皆すべからず、まず私達一人一人の心から始まります。あなたの心に聖霊様の力強い語りかけが今朝あることを祈り、願っています。
お祈りしましょう。
A Church Pleasing to God (4): Two Languages, One Church

The United States is a country where English is the official language. Of course, immigrants who come to this country understand this. They desperately try to learn English. However, this is not that easy. For those who speak English as a second language, there are probably more than a few stories of struggling with English.
When I first came to the U.S. 35 years ago, I said I was flying to “Atlanta” at the flight counter, but the attendant heard “Toronto”. It was difficult to get them to understand that it was “Atlanta,” so finally I wrote Atlanta on a piece of paper for them to understand. I thought to myself, “This is going to be tough.”
About 20 years ago, I went to California Pizza Kitchen for dinner with my family, and ordered toppings for a pizza. However, there were no olives on the pizza that came out, but instead “Broccoli”. Twice we went to that restaurant and twice the same thing happened.
I am sure you have had such an experience. However, I can let it go. That is because English is our second language. It is comforting to have a native language that we can speak a little more properly than English.
However, in reality, there are many problems even when speaking in one’s native language. Although we speak the same language, we cannot communicate our heart with each other.
Genesis 11 records what took place at the Tower of Babel. Even if you have never read the Bible, you have probably heard of what took place at the Tower of Babel.
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there.3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. (Genesis 11:1-9)
It says that all humans at that time spoke one language and a common speech. It says that these people planned to build a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that they may make a name for themselves.
They processed natural materials that God gave to man, and made bricks. This enabled them to build a tall tower. This innovation must have made them proud.
They must have made the great mistake of thinking that they were all-powerful. They wanted to draw near to God by their own strength and make a statement of their own fame.
People’s thoughts and desires are unstoppable. God said, “nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. ”What God did to these people was that He Himself went down to them from above, and confused their language so they would not understand each other.
They stretched as tall as they could to reach the heavens. However, God is far above that. God came down to the humans who were building the tower as if they were crawling on the ground, and confused their language.
People in the Lord, we must know our place. We must be mindful of who we are and who God is.
It is said that since that time, people no longer speak to each other with the same language and common speech, and the languages of the world have become different and diverse. Because of this, after this they were scattered throughout the world.
The phrase “confused their language” here also has another meaning. In other words, this confusion of language meant they began to speak in different languages, but also at the same time it symbolizes the fact that their hearts became increasingly disconnected from each other.
In the past, when they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,” their hearts would be firmly bound together. However, from this point on, when they exchanged ideas about “doing this” and “doing that,” there began to be confusion.
There would have been arguments all over the place, “That’s not what I should be doing,” or “You should be doing that.”
The stubbornness of both sides to not listen to each other, and the stubbornness of both sides to not listen to the other’s suggestions and advice, became a deep-seated human problem.
We all have a native language. If we speak the same native language, we can speak a language that we can communicate with each other. However, is there true heart to heart communication there?
Why is it that the other person’s words do not reach me and my words do not reach them, even though we speak the same language? Perhaps it is because as these people of Babel said, “let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,” we may have such a desire of, “I want to be like God so that I can reach heaven” within our hearts.
To “be like God . . .” means to “live with yourself as the center of your life”, and that is to have “I won’t listen to you” or “I have my own ideas” as thoughts in our hearts.
These words go back to that time when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, and it is called the source of human sin. If that is in each of our hearts, there is no longer anything in those words that can connect the hearts of people . . .
Are you having a heart-to-heart relationship with your spouse? Are you able to connect with the heart of your child or parent? Do we speak in a language that connects us together in our church?
We speak the same language, yet we live without understanding each other’s hearts. When does war break out? When verbal communication is no longer possible, people take up arms.
When we think of these things, we wonder: “Can we ever get out of this condition?” Are the things that took place in Genesis left untouched and remaining as it was?
No, this matter is addressed again later in the Bible. This is recorded in the second chapter of the book of Acts, which we also looked at last time.
The background of this event occurred, as Pastor Honda told us last week, when Jesus told his disciples to “stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Holy Spirit,” and they obeyed his words, remained in Jerusalem, and prayed earnestly.
My mentor once told me, “At that time, I am sure they were each praying repentantly.” After all, Jesus’ disciples were arguing about “who is the greatest among us” until just a few hours before Jesus’ crucifixion.
To them, “serving someone else” was a preposterous notion, yet how could they forget the sight of Jesus and the warmth of His hands as He washed their feet right in front them? The companions who knew each other’s hearts at that time are now facing each other. Surely, they would have been naturally led to repentant prayer.
People in the Lord, the Holy Spirit is poured out on those who are brokenhearted.
At that time, they were not trying to build a tower that would reach to heaven. At that time, they were about to embark on God’s project of taking the gospel from the church to the ends of the earth. What happened then? It is a bit long but I will read it.
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” (Acts 2:1-12)
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
The Bible records that all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. It was right at the time of the Feast of Pentecost, when faithful Jews from all nations under heaven at that time came to stay in Jerusalem.
Their places of origin are listed here in great numbers, but these are the countries of origin of the so-called “Diaspora,” the Jews who were dispersed to various countries, and these Jews were gathering in Jerusalem. People were scattered throughout the world because of what took place at Babel.
However, in the time of the book of Acts, those scattered people were once again gathering and moving to Jerusalem. They were then filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in the language of their birthplaces. What did they talk about? People who were watching this scene said.
”We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”(11).
During the time of Babel, they discussed how they could reach God’s summit. However, in the days of Acts, when the Holy Spirit came upon them, they talked about “the wonders of God.”
The thought they shared at the time was not their own greatness. They shared the story of their God, and praised Him in the language of their respective birthplaces, that is in their native language.
What is written here is a clear message spoken to us. It is that, God was pleased with the gathering together of those who praised His wonders in their respective native languages, and from there the first church was built up.
“I don’t want to listen to you. Why should I work with you?” Such a scene would have occurred everywhere at the Tower of Babel.
In contrast, what happened to the apostles who received the Holy Spirit? If we look at what is written after this in Acts 2:42-47, we can see there those who are different from the Tower of Babel.
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
They were together, though with different languages and cultures, praising God with one heart. They joyfully served one another. Their appearance recorded here, does not describe those who do not listen to each other. Here were people of one mind, sharing meals together, talking about God and praising Him in their native languages.
What we see there, is no desire to make a name for themselves as in the past, but only to respond with gratitude and joy to what the Lord has done for them.
People in the Lord, that thanksgiving and joy was expressed through the language God gave to each of them. And they enjoyed the favor of all the people who saw them. Dear People, do we not find our own true evangelism in what we see here.
The Babel project did not continue. Because there were problems there. The vision of our church and the unity of our families have the same risk.
However, when our hearts are broken and the Holy Spirit comes to us, our hearts are given the power to hear and accept what others say, and to speak words that reach their hearts.
Dear people in the Lord, do the words we speak reach one another? Do we speak such words between husband and wife and parent and child? Do the words we speak in the church reach each other’s hearts?
There are many enlightening books in the world. I sometimes look through them. I sometimes take them to heart. However, lately, I have been thinking a lot. Rather than what I get from these 100 enlightening books, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, to bear the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, is far more important for me.
If this world had one language, then we would not have to translate between Japanese and English every week. I never would have had to eat a broccoli pizza that I didn’t want twice at California Pizza Kitchen (there is a Japanese proverb that says “food resentment is great”).
However, since the Tower of Babel, our world speaks different languages. Differences between us arise, because differences in language have a great impact on the way we think.
The first challenge God gave to those gathered in Jerusalem was to overcome their differences by the unity of the Holy Spirit, and to share the gospel with the world through their way of life.
Not many churches today are given the same challenge that this first church was given to accept. Not surprisingly, our church is one of those few.
Dear people in the Lord, do we take this as our “shackles”? Or do we take it as a “blessing”?
We have been led to this city of San Diego under God’s wonderous providence. For many of you, that providence goes back to your parents and grandparents. We became Christians by God’s grace and through their prayers.
We live only once, so what will we see and hear through this church life while we are on this earth? When we look back on our lives, what kind of church life will we recall? And what kind of church will we leave for the next generation?
Wouldn’t you hope for the chance to see the blessings of the early Church in our time, and to accept this opportunity? All great things begin first and foremost in the hearts of each of us. I pray and hope that the Holy Spirit is speaking powerfully to your heart this morning. Let us pray.

２）創世記１１章１節から９節を読みましょう。ここで人々は何をしようとしていましたか。なぜ、そのことをしようと思ったのですか。彼らの試みは神の目にどのように映りましたか？
３）「彼らの言葉が乱された」（７）ということにはどのような意味がありますか。「神に届こう」という心は私達をどんな生き方へと導きますか？あらためて、なぜ私達の心は互いに通じ合わないのですか？
４）使徒行伝２章１節から１１節を読みましょう。人々の姿を見た者が言いました。「あの人々がわたしたちの国語で、神の大きな働きを述べるのを聞くとは、どうしたことか」（１１）。そこにいた者たちは何を話していたのですか。言語の異なる者達が神について語ることを神様は喜ばれますか。
５）聖霊はどのような人たちの上に注がれましたか。イエス様の弟子たちはその時、何を祈っていたのでしょうか。
６）使徒行伝２章４２節－４７節を読みましょう。ここから人々はどんな心を持っていたことがわかりますか。この時とバベルの時とは何が違いますか。
