神に喜ばれる教会（5）：神の真理を忠実に宣べ伝える

７月４日のウィークエンド、おめでとうございます！今年は７月４日が月曜日なので、週末が延びたという方も多いのではないでしょうか。

７月４日といえば、この国ではもちろん国の独立を思い浮かべますが、歴史的にはこの国の建国のリーダー達によって独立宣言が署名された日として記憶されています。

歴史というのは興味深いものです。私達が生きる時代によって、歴史は修正されていくのです。この国で育ち、高校でアメリカ史を学んだ私は、独立宣言の署名者たちを勇気ある人々として見てきました。

大人となり、その勇気ある人々の信仰について聞くところによると、彼らの多くは理神論者でしたが、中にはキリスト教信仰をしっかりと持っていた人達もいたと知りました。

しかし、最近になって、この国の建国の指導者の何人か、正確には独立宣言の５６人の署名者のうち９人がフリーメイソンであったことを知りました。フリーメーソンは、宇宙の偉大な建築家と呼ばれる存在を信じ、また、良い行いの結果として天国に行けると信じており、人類の罪の代償としてのイエスの死の必要性を否定しています。

もし独立宣言が本当にキリストへの信仰に影響されたものであったなら、おそらくそれはこう書かれていたことでしょう。我々はこれらの真理を自明のこととし、すべての人は平等に造られ、創造主によって確かに譲ることのできない権利が与えられており、これらのうち命、自由および、追求すべきことは”幸福 “のかわりに、”きよさ “であるとする。

幸福は主観的であり、非常に自己中心的です。きよさとは神のみにおいて見出されるものであり、キリストを中心としたものなのです。

フリーメイソンの思想は、独立宣言そのものに深く刻み込まれており、ワシントンDCの設計やレイアウトにもその影響が見てとれます。時間の関係で、今日はこの件には触れませんが、ぜひご自身で調べてみてください。

ただ、言えることは、キリスト教国だと思っていた国が、単なる幻想だったようだということです。実際には、その国の指導者や国民がイエス・キリストを信仰し、人生の主としてイエス・キリストに仕えていなければ、その国をキリスト教国と見なすことは間違っているのです。

したがって、国家のアイデンティティを考えるとき、その国の歴史、特に建国の指導者達が何を信じ、何を大切にしてきたかを考える必要があります。

同時に、歴史がどのように修正されていくかを考える時、私はこの国の歴史の信頼性と真実性について、どのように考えるべきか、チャレンジを受けます。クリスチャンとして、私達は歴史が最終的にHIStory（神の物語）であることを再認識します。

そして、神様の物語は、私達のために聖書に記録されています。聖書は単なる宗教的、精神的な書物ではありません。

それは歴史的な書物でもあり、ありがたいことに、改訂を経ずに私達の手元にあるものなのです。聖書の歴史は真実であり、時の試験を乗り越えてきたのです。

「人はみな草のごとく、その栄華はみな草の花に似ている。草は枯れ、花は散る。しかし、主の言葉は、とこしえに残る」。これが、あなたがたに宣べ伝えられた御言葉である。（第一ペテロ１：２４−２５）

聖書に書かれていることは全て真実であり、それゆえ私達は絶えず忠実にそれを宣べ伝えているのです。

神様が全宇宙を創造され、私達が神様に似せて創造されたことは事実です（創世記１章）。アダムの罪の結果、私達が苦しみ、死ぬことは事実です（創世記３章、ローマ１５章２１節−２２節）。

神様が大洪水によって全世界を裁かれたことは事実です（創世記６ー８章）。神様がノアとその家族を箱舟に乗せて、特定の動物たちと共に保護し、救われたのは事実です（創世記６章−８章）。

神がバベルの塔で人々の言語を混乱させたことは事実です（創世記１１章）。神がアブラハムを選び、彼を祝福し、彼の子孫を通して全世界が祝福されるようにされたのは事実です（創世記１２：１−３、１５：１−３、１５：１−６）。神がヤコブを選び、彼をイスラエルの民の父とされ、

この民を通して、神はご自分の栄光を示し、御心を教えるために彼らを選ばれたことは事実です（創世記３５：９−１５）。神がイスラエルの民を守るためにヨセフを選び、大飢饉の時にエジプトの指導者とされたことは事実です（創世記４１章、５０：１５−２１）。

神がモーセを選び、イスラエルの民を奴隷として扱われていたエジプトから導き出したことは事実です（出エジプト記３章）。神がイスラエルの民に十戒と律法、そして神を礼拝し、罪の赦しを求めるための犠牲のシステムを与えたことは事実です（出エジプト記２０章）。

神がダビデを選び、そのダビデを通して永遠の王国を築かれ、将来、彼を通して約束のメシアが来られることは事実です（サムエル記上７章）。

神が定められた時に、御心に従って完全に従順に生きるために、そして最終的に私達の罪の代価を支払うために十字架上で死ぬために、一人子であるキリスト・イエスを送られたことは事実です（ローマ５：６）。

神がイエスを死後３日目に死者の中からよみがえらせたのは事実です（マタイ２８：１―１０、マルコ１６：１−８、ルカ２４：１−１２、ヨハネ２０：１−１０、Ⅰコリント１５：３−４）。イエス様が復活された後、弟子たちに御自身を見せ、共に過ごし、将来について指示されたのは事実です（ルカ２４：１−４４、ヨハネ２０章−２１章）。

イエスが天に昇られる直前、弟子たちにエルサレムに留まり、約束の聖霊を待つように指示されたのは事実です（ルカ２４：４５−５３、 使徒行伝１：１−１１）。

ペンテコステの日に、神がイエスの弟子たちに聖霊を注いだことは事実です（使徒２：１−４）。これらのことはまさに、ペンテコステの日にペテロが聖霊の導きのもとで宣言されたことなのです。少し長いですが、使徒言行録２：１４−３６を拝読します。

¹⁴そこで、ペテロが十一人の者と共に立ちあがり、声をあげて人々に語りかけた。「ユダヤの人たち、ならびにエルサレムに住むすべてのかたがた、どうか、この事を知っていただきたい。わたしの言うことに耳を傾けていただきたい。¹⁵今は朝の九時であるから、この人たちは、あなたがたが思っているように、酒に酔っているのではない。¹⁶そうではなく、これは預言者ヨエルが預言していたことに外ならないのである。すなわち、¹⁷『神がこう仰せになる。終りの時には、わたしの霊をすべての人に注ごう。そして、あなたがたのむすこ娘は預言をし、若者たちは幻を見、老人たちは夢を見るであろう。¹⁸その時には、わたしの男女の僕たちにもわたしの霊を注ごう。そして彼らも預言をするであろう。¹⁹また、上では、天に奇跡を見せ、下では、地にしるしを、すなわち、血と火と立ちこめる煙とを、見せるであろう。⁰主の大いなる輝かしい日が来る前に、日はやみに月は血に変るであろう。²¹そのとき、主の名を呼び求める者は、みな救われるであろう』。²²イスラエルの人たちよ、今わたしの語ることを聞きなさい。あなたがたがよく知っているとおり、ナザレ人イエスは、神が彼をとおして、あなたがたの中で行われた数々の力あるわざと奇跡としるしとにより、神からつかわされた者であることを、あなたがたに示されたかたであった。²³このイエスが渡されたのは神の定めた計画と予知とによるのであるが、あなたがたは彼を不法の人々の手で十字架につけて殺した。²⁴神はこのイエスを死の苦しみから解き放って、よみがえらせたのである。イエスが死に支配されているはずはなかったからである。²⁵ダビデはイエスについてこう言っている、『わたしは常に目の前に主を見た。主は、わたしが動かされないため、わたしの右にいて下さるからである。²⁶それゆえ、わたしの心は楽しみ、わたしの舌はよろこび歌った。わたしの肉体もまた、望みに生きるであろう。²⁷あなたは、わたしの魂を黄泉に捨ておくことをせず、あなたの聖者が朽ち果てるのを、お許しにならないであろう。²⁸あなたは、いのちの道をわたしに示し、み前にあって、わたしを喜びで満たして下さるであろう』。²⁹兄弟たちよ、族長ダビデについては、わたしはあなたがたにむかって大胆に言うことができる。彼は死んで葬られ、現にその墓が今日に至るまで、わたしたちの間に残っている。³⁰彼は預言者であって、『その子孫のひとりを王位につかせよう』と、神が堅く彼に誓われたことを認めていたので、³¹キリストの復活をあらかじめ知って、『彼は黄泉に捨ておかれることがなく、またその肉体が朽ち果てることもない』と語ったのである。³²このイエスを、神はよみがえらせた。そして、わたしたちは皆その証人なのである。³³それで、イエスは神の右に上げられ、父から約束の聖霊を受けて、それをわたしたちに注がれたのである。このことは、あなたがたが現に見聞きしているとおりである。³⁴ダビデが天に上ったのではない。彼自身こう言っている、『主はわが主に仰せになった、³⁵あなたの敵をあなたの足台にするまでは、わたしの右に座していなさい』。³⁶だから、イスラエルの全家は、この事をしかと知っておくがよい。あなたがたが十字架につけたこのイエスを、神は、主またキリストとしてお立てになったのである」。（使徒行伝２：１４−３６）

 ペテロが聖霊の影響を受けて、旧約聖書を引用しながら神の物語を語ったことは、旧約聖書の信頼性と真理を証明するものです。

ヨエル書には、聖霊の預言と約束が書かれています。詩篇１６篇では、神がダビデを通して将来のキリストの復活について語られたことが書かれています。

詩篇１１０篇には、ダビデを通して神がキリストの神性についてどのように語られたかが書かれています。ペテロはこのメッセージを通して、十字架にかけられながらも神が死からよみがえったイエス・キリストを通して、自分や弟子たちが聖霊を受け、さまざまな言葉で話すようになったのは神の御業であることを明らかにしたのです。そして、最後にこう言ってメッセージを締めくくりました。

「だから、イスラエルの全家は、この事をしかと知っておくがよい。あなたがたが十字架につけたこのイエスを、神は、主またキリストとしてお立てになったのである」。

ペテロは、イエスが主でありメシアであると宣言しました。イエスは神の子であり、したがって全ての者の主であり、神の油注がれた者であるメシアなのです。私達はこのメッセージに対する民衆の反応を見ます。 こう書いてあります。

人々はこれを聞いて、強く心を刺され、ペテロやほかの使徒たちに、「兄弟たちよ、わたしたちは、どうしたらよいのでしょうか」と言った。 （使徒行伝2:37）

この問いかけに対する応えとして、

すると、ペテロが答えた、「悔い改めなさい。そして、あなたがたひとりびとりが罪のゆるしを得るために、イエス・キリストの名によって、バプテスマを受けなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは聖霊の賜物を受けるであろう。³⁹この約束は、われらの主なる神の召しにあずかるすべての者、すなわちあなたがたと、あなたがたの子らと、遠くの者一同とに、与えられているものである」。（使徒行伝2:38-39）

そして、このメッセージは現代の私達にも当てはまります。もし私達が、イエスが神の子であり、全ての人の主であリ、神に油を注がれ、私達の罪のために死なれ、死からよみがえるために神によって遣わされたメシアであることを認めるなら、私達も悔い改めて、イエス・キリストの名によって洗礼を受け、応答しなければならないのです。

悔い改めるということは、考え方を変えるということです。間違った神観、間違った生き方から離れ、神に立ち返り、神の前に正しい生き方をすることです。

特にペテロのメッセージの文脈では、悔い改めるとは、イエスを十字架につけるに値すると考えることから、イエスを主、メシアとして受け入れることに考えを転換することを意味します。

悔い改めとは、神のもとに来るとはどういうことかを説明しています。あなたは神様が反対しているものから離れずに、神様の方を向くことはできないのです。

イエス・キリストの名によってバプテスマを受けることは、イエス様を救い主、主として完全に信頼することを意味します。そうすると、聖霊の賜物を受けることが約束されています。

この約束は、約２０００年前のペンテコステの日にメッセージを聞いた人たちのためであり、その子達や遠く離れている私達のためでもあります。

このことは私達の神である主がお召しになる全ての人のために与えられた約束なのです。確かに、聖霊の賜物は、神の呼びかけに耳を傾け、悔い改め、イエス・キリストを救い主、主として信仰を置くすべての人に与えられるのです。

私達はここで、私達が罪の赦しを受けるのは、イエス・キリストの御名によるものであることを思い起こします。これは紛れもない真実であり、神の歴史（物語）の一部なのです。イエスは十字架にかかる前に、自分を信じていた人たちに次のように言われました。

「もしわたしの言葉のうちにとどまっておるなら、あなたがたは、ほんとうにわたしの弟子なのである。³²また真理を知るであろう。そして真理は、あなたがたに自由を得させるであろう」。。。。「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。すべて罪を犯す者は罪の奴隷である。³⁵そして、奴隷はいつまでも家にいる者ではない。しかし、子はいつまでもいる。³⁶だから、もし子があなたがたに自由を得させるならば、あなたがたは、ほんとうに自由な者となるのである」（ヨハネ８：３１−３２、３４−３６）

まことの歴史について理解しなければならないことの一つは、人類が罪にまみれているという事実を指し示していることです。そして、罪にまみれているゆえに、私達はまた皆、罪の奴隷であり、

私達にはそのような状態から私達を解放してくれる救い主が必要なのです。イエスはここで、神の子である彼こそが私達を解放することができる者であると約束しています。

あなたは信頼できる歴史、改訂を経ない歴史に自分を合わせたいですか？ 罪と死の束縛から解き放たれたいですか？

あなたは、罪と死の束縛からの真の自由と独立を体験したいですか？それなら、聖書に与えられている真理に耳を傾けましょう。

そうすれば、私達は神の子イエス・キリストのもとに導かれ、その方を通して真の自由を体験することができるのです。パウロはローマ８章で、このイエスにある真の自由をこのように表現しています。

¹こういうわけで、今やキリスト・イエスにある者は罪に定められることがない。²なぜなら、キリスト・イエスにあるいのちの御霊の法則は、罪と死との法則からあなたを解放したからである。³律法が肉により無力になっているためになし得なかった事を、神はなし遂げて下さった。すなわち、御子を、罪の肉の様で罪のためにつかわし、肉において罪を罰せられたのである。⁴これは律法の要求が、肉によらず霊によって歩くわたしたちにおいて、満たされるためである。¹⁰もし、キリストがあなたがたの内におられるなら、からだは罪のゆえに死んでいても、霊は義のゆえに生きているのである。 ¹¹もし、イエスを死人の中からよみがえらせたかたの御霊が、あなたがたの内に宿っているなら、キリスト・イエスを死人の中からよみがえらせたかたは、あなたがたの内に宿っている御霊によって、あなたがたの死ぬべきからだをも、生かしてくださるであろう。¹⁴すべて神の御霊に導かれている者は、すなわち、神の子である。¹⁵あなたがたは再び恐れをいだかせる奴隷の霊を受けたのではなく、子たる身分を授ける霊を受けたのである。その霊によって、わたしたちは「アバ、父よ」と呼ぶのである。¹⁶御霊みずから、わたしたちの霊と共に、わたしたちが神の子であることをあかしして下さる。¹⁷もし子であれば、相続人でもある。神の相続人であって、キリストと栄光を共にするために苦難をも共にしている以上、キリストと共同の相続人なのである。（ローマ書８：１−１７）

キリストにある真の自由は、聖霊の働きにより、私達に神の子である保証と神との正しい関係をもたらします。ペンテコステの日、人々が神の真理を聞いた時、彼らは悔い改めてイエスに信頼を置くように心を動かされました。そして、聖霊を受けたのです。

先週の日曜日、大倉牧師は「聖霊は心の砕かれた者に注がれる」と話しました。またこんなことも話されました。世界には多くの啓発本なるものがあります。私も目を通すことがあります。なるほどと心に留めることもあります。

しかし、最近、つくづく思います。これらの１００冊の啓発本から得ることよりも、聖霊に満たされて、御霊の実、すなわち愛、喜び、平和、寛容、慈愛、善意、忠実、柔和、自制の実を結ぶことの方がはるかに私には大切だと。

確かに、私たちは１００冊の啓蒙書を読むことで多くのことを学ぶことができます。しかし、神の真理を宣べ伝えていると真に主張できる本は一冊しかないのです。

それは神の言葉である聖書であり、聖書の中で私たちは聖霊について、また聖霊を受けることの祝福について学ぶことができるのです。

このように私達は、聖霊の確信に基づく悔い改めにつながる神の真理を分かち合います。私達は、人々が神の子イエスに信仰を向けるように導く神の真理を分かち合います。

私たちが神の真理を伝えるのは、そうする人が聖霊を受け、それによって神の子として神との関係を確実に知ることができるようになるためです。

神様は私達が神様の真理を忠実に宣べ伝えることを望んでおられます。ですから、神を喜ばせる教会は、神の真理を忠実に宣べ伝えているのです。和達は神の言葉についてこう言われています。

聖書は、すべて神の霊感を受けて書かれたものであって、人を教え、戒め、正しくし、義に導くのに有益である。¹⁷それによって、神の人が、あらゆる良いわざに対して十分な準備ができて、完全にととのえられた者になるのである。（第二テモテ3:16-17）

従って、私たちは神の言葉の断片ではなく、その全体を忠実に宣べ伝えなければなりません。キリスト教会は２０００年の間、神の真理を忠実に宣べ伝えてきました。そして、私達サンディエゴ日本人キリスト教会も、この９２年間、神の真理を忠実に宣べ伝えてきました。

このことは、世の中が変わり、学校や本で教えられる歴史が改訂されても、良い時も悪い時も、私たちが続けていかなければならないことなのです。神様の言葉は変わりません。私達は聖書の中に見出される神の不変の真理を忠実に宣べ伝え続けなければなりません。

主にある皆さん、私達は祈りのうちに一つになり、聖霊の満たしを求め、神の真理を忠実に宣べ伝える教会となりましょう。そうする時、私達は神から与えられたいのちと自由と聖さの真の喜びを知り、体験することができるのです。

A Church Pleasing to God (5): Faithfully Proclaims God’s Truth

Happy Fourth of July Weekend!  Because July 4^th is on a Monday this year, many of you get an extended weekend.

When we think of July 4^th, of course in this country we think of independence, and historically we remember it as the day in which the Declaration of Independence was signed by the founding leaders of this nation.

History is an interesting thing. Depending upon the time in which you live, history goes through revisions. Growing up in this country, and having taken U.S. history in high school, I looked upon the signers of the Declaration of Independence as people of courage. こ

As an adult, I also heard of the faith of these courageous people, and although many of them were deists, there were some who had solid Christian faith. However, more recently, I have found out that some of the founding leaders of this nation, 9 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence to be exact, were freemasons.

Freemasons believe in what is called the Great Architect of the Universe, and also believe that you will go to heaven as a result of good works, thus denying the need for Jesus’ death as the payment of mankind’s sins.

If the Declaration of Independence was truly influenced by faith in Christ, then it probably would have read: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Holiness,” instead of “Happiness.”

Happiness is subjective and very self-centered.  Holiness is found in God alone and is Christ-centered.The ideology of freemasons is deeply ingrained in the Declaration of Independence itself, and its influence can also be seen in the design and layout of Washington D.C. as well.

Because of time, I will not go into this today, but I encourage you to look into it yourself.

However, what I can say is that a country that I thought was a Christian nation seems to be just an illusion. Actually, it is wrong for us to deem a country to be Christian, unless its leadership and citizens have faith in Jesus Christ and serve Him as the Lord of their lives.

Thus, when thinking about a nation’s identity, one must think about its history,

particularly its founding leadership and what they believe and value.At the same time, in thinking about history and how it goes through revisions, I am challenged to wonder about the reliability and truthfulness of this country’s history.

As Christians, we are reminded that history is ultimately about HIStory: God’s story. And God’s story is recorded for us in the Bible. The Bible is not just a religious and spiritual book.It is also a historical book, and thankfully it has not gone through revisions. Bible history is true and has survived the test of time.

For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you. (1 Peter 1:24-25)

Everything in the Bible is true, and therefore we continually and faithfully proclaim it. It is true that God created the whole universe, and we were created in His image (Genesis 1).

It is true that we suffer and die as a result of Adam’s sin (Genesis 3; Romans 15:21-22)　It is true that God judged the whole world through a worldwide flood (Genesis 6-8).

It is true that God saved Noah and his family preserving them along with specific animals on an ark (Genesis 6-8). It is true that God confused the languages of people at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11).

It is true that God chose Abraham and blessed him, so that through his future decedent the whole world would be blessed (Genesis 12:1-3; 15:1-6).It is true that God chose Jacob to become the father of the people of Israel, a chosen people through which He may display His glory and teach His will (Genesis 35:9-15).

It is true that God chose Joseph to preserve the people of Israel by making him a leader of Egypt during a time of great famine (Genesis 41; 50:15-21).

It is true that God chose Moses to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt where they were treated as slaves (Exodus 3).

It is true that God gave the people of Israel the ten commandments and the Law, along with the sacrificial system of worshiping God and seeking forgiveness for their sins (Exodus 20).

It is true that God chose David through whom He would establish an everlasting kingdom, and in the future the promised Messiah would come (2 Samuel 7).

It is true that in God’s appointed time, He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ, to live in complete obedience according to His will, and ultimately to die on a cross to pay for the wages of our sins (Romans 5:6).

It is true that God raised Jesus from the dead on the third day after His death (Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-10; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4). It is true that after Jesus’ resurrection, He showed Himself to His disciples, spent time with them and instructed them concerning the future (Luke 24:1-44; John 20-21).

It is true that just before Jesus’ ascension back to heaven, He instructed His disciples to stay in Jerusalem and to wait for the promised Holy Spirit (Luke 24:45-53; Acts 1:1-11).

It is true that on the Day of Pentecost, God poured out the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ disciples (Acts 2:1-4). Some of these very things were declared by Peter on the Day of Pentecost under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

It is a little long, but I will read Acts 2:14-36.

¹⁴ Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. ¹⁵ These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! ¹⁶ No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ¹⁵

¹⁷ “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. ¹⁷¹⁸ Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. ¹⁸¹⁹ I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. ²⁰ The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. ²¹ And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’²² “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. ²³ This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. ²⁴ But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.  ²⁵ David said about him: “‘I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. ²⁶ Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope,  ²⁷ because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay. ²⁸ You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.’ ²⁹ “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.³⁰ But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. ³¹ Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. ³² God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.³³ Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. ³⁴ For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand ³⁵ until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’³⁶ “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” (Acts 2:14-36)

The fact that Peter under the influence of the Holy Spirit referred to Old Testament Scripture in telling the story of God, that is HIStory, is proof in the reliability and truth of the Old Testament Scriptures.

There is reference to the prophecy and promise of the Holy Spirit written about in the book of Joel. There is reference to Psalm 16, and how God through David spoke about the future resurrection of the Christ.

There is reference to Psalm 110, and how God through David spoke about the divinity of the Christ. Through this message, Peter made it clear that it was the work of God through Jesus Christ who was crucified and yet God rose from the dead by which he and the disciples had received the Holy Spirt and spoke in various languages.He finished his message by saying,

“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

Peter declared that Jesus is both Lord and Messiah. He is the Son of God, and thus Lord over all, and the Messiah, the Anointed One of God. We see the response of the people to this message.  It says:

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37)

In response to their question:

³⁸ Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. ³And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.³⁹ The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38-39)

And this message is true for us today.

If we recognize that Jesus is the Son of God, and thus Lord over all, and that He is the Messiah, God’s Anointed One, sent by God to die for our sins and rose from the dead,　then we too are to respond by repenting and being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

To repent means to change the way we think.  It means to turn away from our wrong views of God and wrong way of living, and turn to Him and align our life in accordance with what is right before Him.

Specifically, within the context of Peter’s message, to repent meant to turn their thinking around from considering Jesus as worthy of crucifixion to embracing Him as Lord and Messiah. Repentance describes what coming to God is.

You cannot turn towards God without turning away from the things He is against. To be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ means to put our complete trust in Jesus as our Savior and Lord.

When we do so, we are promised that we will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is for those who heard the message nearly 2000 years ago on the Day of Pentecost, and also for their children and we who are far off.

It is a promise given for all whom the Lord our God will call. Indeed, the gift of the Holy Spirit is given to all who will heed God’s call to repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.

We are reminded here that it is in the name of Jesus Christ through whom we receive the forgiveness of our sins. This is undeniable truth which is part of HIStory!

Jesus before He went to the cross said the following to those who had believed Him:

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  ³² Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. . . . Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. ³⁵ Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. ³⁶ So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:31-32, 34-36)

One of the first things we need to understand about true history is that it points to the fact that mankind is riddled with sin. And because it is riddled with sin, and because we are all slaves to sin, we need a Savior to deliver us from such a state.

Jesus promises here that He as the Son of God is the One who can set us free. Do you want to align yourself with a history you can trust, a history that does not go through revision? Do you want to be set free from the bondage of sin and death? Do you want to experience true freedom and independence from the bondage of sin and death?

Then, let us listen to the truth given to us in the Bible. When we do, we will be led to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, through whom we can experience true freedom.

This is how Paul described this true freedom found in Jesus in Romans 8.

¹ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, ^1 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. ³ For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.

And so he condemned sin in the flesh,⁴ in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. ¹⁰ But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. ¹¹ And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you,he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. ¹⁴ For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.¹⁵ The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;  rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”¹⁶ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.¹⁷ Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

True freedom in Christ brings us into a right relationship with God, where we are assured of being children of God through the work of the Holy Spirit given to us. On the Day of Pentecost, when people heard the truth of God, they were moved to repentance and to put their trust in Jesus.They then received the Holy Spirit.

Last Sunday, Pastor Okura mentioned that the Holy Spirit is poured out on those who are brokenhearted. He also shared that:

There are many enlightening books in the world. I sometimes look through them. I sometimes take them to heart. However, lately, I have been thinking a lot. Rather than what I get from these 100 enlightening books, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, to bear the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, is far more important for me.

Indeed, we can learn many things through studying 100 enlightening books.

However, there is only one book that we can truly claim as proclaiming God’s truth. It is the Bible, the word of God, and it is in the Bible that we learn of the Holy Spirit and the blessing of receiving the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Thus, we share the truth of God that leads to repentance based on the conviction of the Holy Spirit. We share the truth of God that leads people to look to Jesus, the Son of God, in faith.

We share the truth of God that those who do so will receive the Holy Spirit by which they will know for certainty of their relationship to God as His children.

God wants us to faithfully proclaim His truth. Thus, a church that pleases God faithfully proclaims God’s truth. We are told concerning God’s word:

¹⁶ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,¹⁷ so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)¹⁶

Thus, we must faithfully proclaim the whole of God’s word, and not just bits and pieces of it. The Church of Christ has been faithfully proclaiming God’s truth for 2000 years, and we as the San Diego Japanese Christian Church has faithfully proclaimed God’s truth for these 92 years.

This is something that we must continue to do, in good times and bad times, even as the world changes and the history taught in schools and books go through revisions.

God’s word does not change. We must therefore continue to faithfully proclaim the unchanging truth of God found in the Bible. People in the Lord, let us be a church that comes together as one in prayer, seeks the filling of the Holy Spirit, and faithfully proclaims the truth of God. When we do so, we will know and experience the true joy of the life, liberty, and holiness given to us by God.
