アメリカのアニメにポパイがあります。彼のガールフレンドはオリーブ。ポパイをいつもいじめるのがブルータス。ある時、初めてこのポパイを見た幼い子供がテレビを見ながら泣いていました。なぜ？ ポパイがブルータスに殴られ、吹っ飛ばされて壁に飛んでいき、一枚の紙のようになって壁からひらひら落ちる。ポパイがかわいそうだから・・・。なんでいつもこうなるの・・・。
数週間後、この幼児は同じ場面を見てもニコニコしている。なぜ？ この子は毎日、ポパイを見ているうちに知ったのです。 ポパイは毎日、ブルータスによって吹っ飛ばされる。しかし最後に彼はいつもほうれん草の缶詰を食べて、毎日、ブルータスをやっつける。その子はポパイの最後を知っている。その子はポパイが最後に必ず勝つことを知っている。ゆえにポパイが苦境に立たされても、その結末を知っているので、笑っている。
私達は今、自分が置かれている状況から物事の価値を決め、自分の心もそれに従い動きます。主にある皆さん、私達に最後に確約されていることを踏まえて、今、直面している物事の価値を決めようではありませんか。終わりの勝利は確約されているのですから、勝利者らしく生きようではありませんか。
『世に勝つ者はだれか。イエスを神の子と信じる者ではないか』（ヨハネ第一の手紙５章５節）

終わりを知る時、今、喜びがわく

私達は毎週の礼拝で、以下の「使徒信条」をこれまで見てまいりました。
「我は天地の造り主、全能の父なる神を信ず、我はその一人子、我らの主イエス・キリストを信ず。主は聖霊によりてやどり、おとめマリアより生れ、ポンテオ・ピラトのもとに苦しみを受け、十字架につけられ、死にて葬られ、陰府にくだり、三日目に死人の内よりよみがえり、天にのぼり、全能の父なる神の右に座したまえり・・・」。
そして、今日はこの後に続きます「かしこより来たりて、生ける者と死にたる者とを裁きたまわん」から短い一言、「かしこより来たりて」ということを見ていきたく願っております。
日本語では分かりにくいのですが、使徒信条を見ていきます時に私達はあることに気がつかされます。それはここに記されております 「やどり」、「生れ」、「苦しみを受け」、「十字架につけられ」、「死にて」、「葬られ」、「下り」、「よみがえり」、「のぼり」 までは、すべて過去形で書かれているということです。
確かにこれらは全てイエス・キリストに関わることであり、全て過去に起きたことです。しかし、今日、見ていきます「かしこより来たりて」に関して言えば英語の聖書はこう記しています。
“and He will come to judge the living and the dead.”
この言葉は使徒信条の中に書かれている唯一の未来形なのです。すなわち「この地に再びキリストが来られる」ということ、これだけが未だ、起きていないこと、しかし必ず起きると聖書が言っていることなのです。今日はこの「やがて来る日」、すなわち主の再臨について見ていきたいと願っています。
この使徒信条について、かつて私は「処女マリアより生まれ」いうことについてお話ししました。そして、私は皆さんを前に「何ということを話しているのだろうか」と自問したということをお話しました。今日お話しますこともその類のことです。
すなわち、この「かしこより来たりて」というのは、やがていつかイエス・キリストが天からこの地に来られるということなのです。このような常識では考えられないことを私達はどのように受け止めるのでしょうか。もちろん、私はこのことを信じていますし、皆さんの多くもそれを信じています。
そして、何を隠そう誰よりもこのことを確信していたのが、その本人、イエス・キリストであり、そのことを聖書は記録しています。イエス・キリストはどれくらい、このことを大切なこととされ、それは必ず起きることだと自覚していたのでしょうか。
アメリカでは言論の自由というものがあり、私達は自分の思うところを言葉にして表現することができます。ただし、そのような言葉の中にも「それを言ってしまったら大変なことになる、大切なものを失うことになる」というような言葉があります。その言葉によって訴えられたり、乱闘が起きたり、職や家族を失うことがある言葉です。しかし、それを言ってしまったら「命を失う」というような言葉となると、それは余程の言葉であり、あまり思い浮かびません。
イエス・キリストは十字架につけられました。そのことによってイエス様は殺されました。実はその十字架にかかることを決定づけたイエス様の言葉があったのですが、皆さんはご存知でしょうか。言い方を変えますならば、イエス様はその言葉に自分の命をかけたという一言です。
その言葉がイエス様の口から発せられた時、イエス様は大祭司と議会の前に立たされていました。彼らはどうにかしてイエス様から不利な証言を得ようとしていました。そのために多くの者達がイエスに対する偽証をたてました。そのことを記している箇所を読みましょう。マルコ１４章６０節－６５節、

60そこで大祭司が立ちあがって、まん中に進み、イエスに聞きただして言った、「何も答えないのか。これらの人々があなたに対して不利な証言を申し立てているが、どうなのか」。61しかし、イエスは黙っていて、何もお答えにならなかった。大祭司は再び聞きただして言った、「あなたは、ほむべき者の子、キリストであるか」。62イエスは言われた、「わたしがそれである。あなたがたは人の子が力ある者の右に座し、天の雲に乗って来るのを見るであろう」。63すると、大祭司はその衣を引き裂いて言った、「どうして、これ以上、証人の必要があろう。64あなたがたはこのけがし言を聞いた。あなたがたの意見はどうか」。すると、彼らは皆、イエスを死に当るものと断定した。65そして、ある者はイエスにつばきをかけ、目隠しをし、こぶしでたたいて、「言いあててみよ」と言いはじめた。また下役どもはイエスを引きとって、手のひらでたたいた。
お分かりになったかと思います。イエス様の十字架を決定づけた言葉を。
マルコ１４章６２節－６３節
大祭司は再び聞きただして言った、「あなたは、ほむべき者の子、キリストであるか」。62イエスは言われた、「わたしがそれである。あなたがたは人の子が力ある者の右に座し、天の雲に乗って来るのを見るであろう」
この言葉は大祭司を激怒させました。それはイエス様が自分を神に等しいものとして語ったからです。イエス様が天の雲に乗って来るのを見るだろうと言ったからです。この言葉を聞き、人々はイエスを死に当たる者と断定し、イエス様はここから十字架に向かいます。
イエス・キリストはこの言葉に命をかけたのです。私たちは「今晩、私は必ずスパゲティーを食べる」というような一言に命をかけません。当たり前です、今晩、スパゲティーを食べることに、そんな価値はないからです。それではどんな言葉なら私たちの命をかけるでしょうか・・・・。思いめぐらしてもあまりそのような言葉というものは思いつきません。
しかし、はっきり分かることは、もしそのような言葉があるのなら、それはその人にとってどうでもいい言葉ではないということです。その言葉は自分が最も大切なことにしていることであり、絶対に譲れるようなものではなく、もちろんそれは決して嘘、でたらめではないということです。誰も自分の嘘やでたらめの作り話に命はかけません。
「わたしがそれである。あなたがたは人の子が力ある者の右に座し、天の雲に乗って来るのを見るであろう」私達は主イエスが命をかけた言葉を、全身全霊をもって信じ、受け止めなければなりません。
全てのものには初めがあり、終わりがあります。それは「そんなのいやだ」というような感情的なものではなくて、冷静にこの世界を見る時に、このことは私達が認めざるをえない天地万物の法則なのです。そして、その終わりの時にキリストはもう一度、この世界に来られるというのです。マタイ２４章３５節－５１節からイエス・キリストの言葉をみてみましょう。
マタイ２４章３５節－５１節
35天地は滅びるであろう。しかしわたしの言葉は滅びることがない。36その日、その時は誰も知らない。天の御使いたちも、また子も知らない。ただ父だけが知っている37人の子の現れるのも、ちょうどノアの時のようであろう。38すなわち、洪水の出る前、ノアが箱舟にはいる日まで、人々は食い、飲み、めとり、とつぎなどしていた。39そして洪水が襲ってきて、いっさいのものをさらって行くまで、彼らは気がつかなかった。人の子の現れるのも、そのようであろう。40そのとき、ふたりの者が畑にいると、ひとりは取り去られ、ひとりは取り残されるであろう。41ふたりの女がうすをひいていると、ひとりは取り去られ、ひとりは残されるであろう。42だから、目をさましていなさい。いつの日にあなたがたの主がこられるのか、あなたがたには、わからないからである。43このことをわきまえているがよい。家の主人は、盗賊がいつごろ来るかわかっているなら、目をさましていて、自分の家に押し入ることを許さないであろう。44だから、あなたがたも用意をしていなさい。思いがけない時に人の子が来るからである。45主人がその家の僕たちの上に立てて、時に応じて食物をそなえさせる忠実な思慮深い僕は、いったい、だれであろう。46主人が帰ってきたとき、そのようにつとめているのを見られる僕は、さいわいである。47よく言っておくが、主人は彼を立てて自分の全財産を管理させるであろう。48もしそれが悪い僕であって、自分の主人は帰りがおそいと心の中で思い、49その僕仲間をたたきはじめ、また酒飲み仲間と一緒に食べたり飲んだりしているなら、50その僕の主人は思いがけない日、気がつかない時に帰ってきて、51彼を厳罰に処し、偽善者たちと同じ目にあわせるであろう。彼はそこで泣き叫んだり、歯がみをしたりするであろう。
主にある皆さん、イエス・キリストが命をかけた再臨は必ずやってきます。雲ひとつなく、晴れ渡るような大地の上に造られたノアの箱舟。多くの人達は「いつその船を水の上に浮かべるんだ？」とノアをあざ笑ったに違いありません。人々はノアに手を貸すこともなく、聖書の言葉によりますとノアが箱舟に入るその日にも彼らは食い、飲み、めとり、とつぎなどしていました。
驚くべきことに彼らは「洪水が襲ってきて、いっさいのものをさらって行くまで、彼らは気がつかなかった」（３９）というのです。主にある皆さん、私達はこのことを謙虚に受け止めましょう。我々人間の霊的なセンサーはその程度なのです。そして、その後にイエス様は言われました「人の子の現れるのも、そのようであろう」
私達がドライブスルーでハンバーガーを注文している時、アマゾンで買い物をしている時、そんな日常を送っている時にその日はやってくるというのです。二人でビジネスの打ち合わせをしているとその一人は取り去られ、取り残されるというのです。
私は今、皆さんに恐怖心を起こさせようとして、大袈裟に話しているのでしょうか。いいえ、イエス・キリストが言い残した言葉を水増しせず、そのままお伝えしています。私達はその日を限定したり、自分の想像や願望に任せて、この世界の事象は再臨の予兆だと好き勝手な解釈をつけ加えることに注意しなければなりません。なぜなら、それらは聖書に書いていないからです。聖書はただ、その日は思いがけない時に来ると言っているのです。これらを踏まえて、私達がすべきことはただ一つ。イエス様は言われました。
だから、あなたがたも用意をしていなさい（４４）。
聖書は、私達はこの世にあって寄留者だと言います。寄留者とはすなわち「仮住まいの者」ということです。この再臨はある場所に定住し、何かしらの物を所有している者達に向かって言います。「はい、そこまで。あなたは全てを残して、この地を離れ、天に移住します」というようなものです。
私達が常にこのことを踏まえて生きていくということが寄留者としての心構えです。しかし、それは「地に足をつけた」ものでなければなりません。すなわち「どうせ再臨がくるのだから」と世捨て人のようになったりしてはならないということです。パウロはこの主の再臨を意識して、テサロニケ第一の手紙を書きました。その中でこう記しています。
１テサロニケ４章１１節
そして、あなたがたに命じておいたように、つとめて落ち着いた生活をし、自分の仕事に身をいれ、手ずから働きなさい。
再臨が来るその日まで私達はしっかりと夕食の準備をし、オフィスワークに従事し、病院へのアポイントメントを守っていなければなりません。社会に対して、隣人に対して、誠実に向き合っていなければなりません。再臨を言い訳として、私達のこの地上での役目を放棄してはなりません。それが地に足をつけた寄留者の姿です。
このことに対して、その主の日までの私達の日々の具体的な生き方を聖書はあちらこちらに書いていますから、それに従い、これからも生きていくべきです。ピリピ書はパウロが書いた「喜びの書」として有名ですが、特に４章４節、５節はよく知られており、その中にこの主の再臨を前にしている者達の生き方が書かれています。
ピリピ４章４節、５節
4「あなたがたは主にあっていつも喜びなさい。繰り返して言うが、喜びなさい。5あなたがたの寛容を、みんなの人に示しなさい。主は近い」。
このところの「主は近い」というのは「主の来臨は近い」という意味です。このピリピ書を書いたパウロはしつこいのです。「喜びなさい。くどいようだけれど、何度も言いますよ、喜びなさい」。「パウロさん、あなたは何でそんなに私達に喜んで生きることを勧めるのですか。なんでそんなに繰り返し言うのですか。現実を考えたら、そんなに喜んでばかりいられないことばかりでしょう」
こんな問いがもし、パウロになされるのならパウロは言うに違いありません。「なぜ喜ぶかって？主の来臨は近いからです。その日に私達は主と会うことができるのですから」。
皆さんにとって人生最高の日はいつでしたか・・・。きっとそれは素晴らしい一日だったのでしょう。ある人は我が子が生まれた時と言うことでしょう。ある人は自分の夢が叶えられた日と言うでしょう。
しかし、覚えてください。実は私達の人生最高の日はまだ来ていないのです。人生最高の日は主が来られる日なのです。いいえ、たとえ私達が生存中にその日が来ないとしても、どちらにしても私達にとって最良の日とは主イエス・キリストにお会いする時、すなわち私達が天に移される日なのです。そんな日がこの地上での一番、最後の日に控えているのだから、喜びなさいとパウロは言います。
多くの人は人生最後の日は最悪で、恐ろしいと考えます。しかし主にある皆さん、キリストにあって私達の人生最高の日は、その私達の人生の一番、最後にあるのです。このことを心に刻みましょう。
私達は今、最悪に向かって生きているのではなくて、最高の時に向かって毎日を生きているのです。そして、そう考えたら、今、あなたの心に喜びが湧いてこないだろうかとパウロは私達に語りかけるのです。
朝、妻が「今晩の夕飯は餃子だよ」と私に言います。単純で食いしん坊の私には、その餃子は一日のモーティベーションとなります。笑いたいなら笑ってください。私は単純な男です。その晩、食卓に座り、目の前で焼かれる餃子を特製のタレにつけて食べる。その光景を思い描きながら、一日、しんどいことがあったとしても、そこを目指します。胃袋に収めたらなくなってしまう餃子にですら、私はこのような思いをもちます。
そうであるのなら、ましてや、その最後に主イエス・キリストに出会うことができ、永久に神の臨在のもとに生きるとするならば、私達の喜びはどんなに大きなものでしょうか。私達の予定は諸々の事情によりキャンセルされます。しかし、この予定はキャンセルされることなく必ず来るのです。その喜びはその日を迎えた時に起こる喜びではなく、今からそのことを喜ぶのです。

日本語の聖書は「寛容でありなさい」、英語の聖書は「優しくありなさい」と言います。主の再臨が確約されているあなたが今、腹を立てていることは、本当に腹を立てる価値があるのか？主の再臨が確約されているあなたが今、心配していることは、本当に心配する必要があるのか？主の再臨が確約されているあなたが今、妬んでいることには価値があるのか？これらのことで心身が病んでしまったり、眠れない夜を繰り返す、そんなことをこれからも続けて生きていくのか。誰がそんな人生を望むだろうか。
天国に行って、「なんであんなことにあんなに固執していたのだろう」と思わされることが、きっと私達には少なからずあることでしょう。それが天国を実際に見ず、この世界の只中に生きている私達の姿です。しかし、私達はできる限り、最後に約束されている最高のものを先取りして、今を生きようではありませんか。ヨハネ第一の手紙５章４節、５節、
4なぜなら、すべて神から生れた者は、世に勝つからである。そして、わたしたちの信仰こそ、世に勝たしめた勝利の力である。 5世に勝つ者はだれか。イエスを神の子と信じる者ではないか。
私達がキリストと共に生きる限り、この私達の人生が勝利で終わることは今、既に明らかなのです。このことは最後が来た時に味わえるというものではないのです。私達は今からそれを味わいつつ生きていく人生を主イエスは私達にくださっているのです。いつの時代にもキリストの教会は、そこに集う者達は多くの試練にあってきました。しかし、彼らは驚くべきことに、このキリストにある希望ゆえに、喜びと共に生きたのです。最後に皆さんにお聞きします。イエス・キリストは言いました。
『だから、あなたがたも用意をしていなさい』（４４）
この世で為す準備は全て、この世に関することです。しかし、私が今日、皆さんにお話した準備は、私達の永遠に関することです。このことが事実であるのなら、この準備は何を差し置いても、私達が第一にしておくべきことです。
あなたはその日のために準備が出来ていますか。
それは予備の水がガレージに備えてありますとか、スペアタイヤを車に常備していますというような話ではないのです。私は今、あなたの永遠に関わることについてお話ししています。現在の、そしてこれからの残りの人生の生き方についてお話ししています。主イエスが命をかけた言葉についてお話ししています。
今は開かれていますが、ノアの箱舟の扉が閉じられる時はきます。もし、まだその備えが出来ていない、確信がないようでしたら、牧師を捕まえてください。そして、どのようにこの準備をしたらいいのかを聞いてみてください。私達はそのことを伝えるためにここにいるのですから。

When We Know the End, Joy Fills Us Now

We have so far looked at the following portion of the “Apostles’ Creed” in our weekly worship services.
“I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day, He rose again; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the Father, . . .”
Today, we would like to look at what follows after that: “and He will come to judge the living and the dead”, and more specifically the short phrase, “and He will come”.
It is difficult to understand in Japanese, but when we look at the Apostles’ Creed, we are reminded of something. What is written here: “conceived,” “born,” “suffered,” “crucified,” “dead,” “buried,” “descended,” “rose,” “ascended,” are all written in the past tense.
Indeed, all of these things are related to Jesus Christ, and all of them have happened in the past. However, regarding the phrase that we will look at today, the English Bible states:
“and He will come to judge the living and the dead.”
These are the only words in the Apostles’ Creed that are written in the future tense. In other words, “Jesus coming again to this earth” is the only thing that has not happened yet, but the Bible says it will surely happen. Today we would like to look at this “day that will soon come,” that is the Lord’s second coming.
I once spoke regarding the “born of the Virgin Mary” portion of the Apostles’ Creed. And I told you that I asked myself, “What in the world am I talking about?” What I am going to talk about today is also like that.
In other words, this “and He will come” means that Jesus Christ will one day come from heaven to this earth. How do we accept this kind of unthinkable thing that is out of the norm? Of course, I believe this and many of you believe it as well.
And more importantly, the one who was more convinced of this than anyone else, was Jesus Christ Himself, and the Bible records this. I wonder how much Jesus Christ really considered this as being important and was aware that it was happening for certain.
In the U.S., we have freedom of speech, which allows us to express what we think in words. However, some of those words are such that if you say them, you will get in trouble, and you will lose something important. These are words that can lead to lawsuits, brawls, and loss of a job and family. However, when it comes to words that may cause you to “lose your life” by saying it, those words are taboo, and they don’t often come to mind.
Jesus Christ was crucified. By that Jesus was killed. In fact, there were words that Jesus spoke that were decisive in Him being crucified, but do you know what they were? Put another way, Jesus put His life on the line with these words.
When the words were uttered by Jesus, He was standing before the high priest and the Sanhedrin (religious leaders’ assembly). They wanted to somehow get incriminating testimony from Jesus. To this end, many of them gave false testimony against Jesus. Let’s read the Scripture passage that records this. Mark 14:60-65:

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
I think you understand. The words that determined that Jesus would go to the cross.
Mark 14:62-63
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
These words infuriated the high priest. It was because Jesus spoke of Himself as equal to God. Because He said that the high priest will see Jesus coming on the clouds of heaven. Hearing these words, the people condemn Jesus to be worthy of death, and from here Jesus goes to the cross.
Jesus Christ put His life on the line with these words. We don’t put our lives on the line with words like, “Tonight, I will definitely eat spaghetti!” Of course not, because eating spaghetti tonight doesn’t have much worth.
So then, what words would we put our lives on the line for . . . I can’t think of many such words even as I ponder this.
However, what is clear is that if there are such words, they are not words that do not matter to that person. Those words are what is considered most important to that person, and they are not something that could ever be given up, and of course it is never a lie or something made up. No one puts their life on the line for their lies and made up stories.
“I am, and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” We must believe and accept with all our being the words of the Lord Jesus with which He put His life on the line.
All things have a beginning and an end. It is not an “I don’t like that” kind of emotional thing, but when we calmly look at this world, this is a law of heaven and earth and all things in it that we have to acknowledge. And at the end of time, Christ will come again to this world. Let us look at the words of Jesus Christ found in Matthew 24:35-51.

35 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 36 But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. 45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
People in the Lord, the Second Coming, for which Jesus Christ gave His life, will surely come.
Noah’s Ark was built on a sunny, cloudless land. Many people must have mocked Noah, saying, “When are you going to put that boat on the water?” The people did not help Noah, and the Bible says that even on the day Noah entered the ark, they were eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage.
Surprisingly it says, “and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.” (vs.39)
People in the Lord, let us humbly accept this. That is the extent of our human spiritual sensors. And, after that Jesus said, “That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”
He is saying that day will come when we are going about our daily lives, ordering a hamburger at the drive-thru, or shopping on Amazon. When two people are having a business meeting, one will be taken away and one will be left behind.
Am I exaggerating things now in an attempt to cause fear in you all? No, I am giving you the words of Jesus Christ as He said them, without watering it down.
We must be careful not to limit that day, or let our own imaginations and desires dictate that the events of this world are signs of the Second Coming,
and add our own interpretations. This is because such things are not in the Bible. The Bible just says that the day will come when you least expect it. In light of all this, there is only one thing for us to do. Jesus said.
“So you also must be ready” (vs.44)
The Bible says that we are sojourners in this world. A sojourner, in other words, is a “temporary resident”. This Second Coming is addressed to those who have settled in a certain place and own something. It is like, “Okay, that’s it. You will leave everything behind and leave this earth and emigrate to heaven”.
Our attitude as sojourners is to always live with this in mind. However, it must be “down to earth”. In other words, we should not become like hermits, saying, “The Second Coming is coming anyway”. Paul wrote his first letter to the Thessalonians with the Second Coming of the Lord in mind. In it, he wrote:
1 Thessalonians 4:11)
and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you,
Until the day the Second Coming arrives, we must be well-prepared for dinner, engaged in office work, and keep our doctor appointments. We must be diligent in our role in society and with our neighbors.We must not use the Second Coming as an excuse to abandon our role here on earth. That is what a down to earth sojourner looks like.
In response to this, the Bible describes here and there specific ways to live our daily lives until that Day of the Lord, and we should continue to live accordingly. The book of Philippians is well known as the “book of joy” written by Paul, and Philippians 4:4-5 is especially well known, and it is written there of how those who are looking forward to the return of the Lord should live.
Philippians 4:4-5
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
“The Lord is near” here, means “The Lord’s coming is near”. Paul, who wrote this book of Philippians, was persistent. “Rejoice! I know this may sound repetitious, but I will say it again and again, rejoice!” Paul, why do you encourage us to live joyfully so much? Why do you say it over and over again? When we think of reality, there isn’t always things we can rejoice about.”
If such a question were posed to Paul, he would surely say. “Why should we rejoice? Because the coming of the Lord is near. Because on that day we will meet the Lord.”
When was the best day of your life . . . I am sure it was a wonderful day. Someone may say it was when their child was born. Someone may say it was the day their dream came true.
But please remember. The best day of our lives has actually not come yet. The best day of our life is the day the Lord comes. No, even if that day does not come in our lifetime, regardless, the best day for us is when we meet the Lord Jesus Christ, the day we are transferred to heaven. Paul says that we should rejoice because such a day is reserved for the very last day on this earth.
Many people consider the last day of their life to be the worst, and dreadful. But people in the Lord, the best day of our lives in Christ is at the very, very end of our lives. Let us keep this in mind.
We are not living now in anticipation of the worst, but we are living every day in anticipation of the best time. And when you think about it that way, Paul tells us, doesn’t joy well up in your heart now?
In the morning, my wife tells me, “Tonight’s dinner will be gyoza (dumplings)”. For me, a simple foodie, the gyoza becomes my motivation for the day. Laugh if you want to. I am a simple man.
That evening, I sit at the dining table and eat the gyoza cooked in front of me dipped in a special sauce. Envisioning that scene, I aim to get there, even if it is a tough day.I feel this way even about gyoza, which are gone when I put them in my stomach.
If so, even more, how great would be our joy if we could meet the Lord Jesus Christ at the end, and live in the presence of God forever! Our schedule is cancelled for various reasons. However, this schedule will never be cancelled, it will surely come. That joy is not a joy that happens when that day arrives; we rejoice in that now.
I am sure many of you have heard this story from me before, to the point where you have calluses on your ears. There is an American cartoon called Popeye. His girlfriend is Olive. Brutus is the one who always teases Popeye.
One day, a young child sees this Popeye for the first time and cries while watching TV. Why? Popeye is hit by Brutus, blown away and flies into the wall, and peels off the wall like a piece of paper.
Poor Popeye . . . Why is it always like this . . . A few weeks later, this young child is smiling even while seeing the same scene. Why? Watching Popeye every day, this child came to know something. Popeye gets blown away by Brutus every day.
But in the end he always eats a can of spinach, and every day, he defeats Brutus.That child knows Popeye’s end. That child knows that Popeye will always win in the end. Hence, when Popeye is in a predicament, he laughs because he knows how it ends.
We decide the worth of things based on the situation we are in, and our hearts move accordingly. People in the Lord, from now on, let us decide the worth of the things we are facing now, based on what is finally assured to us. Paul said.
Philippians 4:4-5
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
The Japanese Bible says, “Be tolerant,” and the English Bible says, “Be gentle”.Given that the Lord’s return is assured, is what you are angry about now, really worth being angry about? Given that the Lord’s return is assured, do you really need to worry about what you are worrying about now? Is it worth being jealous now that you are assured of the Lord’s return? Will you continue to live with these things that make you mentally and physically ill, or that causes you sleepless nights? Who desires such a life?
I am sure there will be more than a few times when we go to heaven and are made to wonder why we were so adamant about such and such a thing. That is how we are living in the midst of this world, without actually seeing heaven. However, let us live now as best we can, anticipating the best that is promised at the end. 1 John 5:4, 5,

4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
It is already clear now that as long as we live with Christ, this our life will end in victory. This is not something that can be savored when the end comes. The Lord Jesus has given us a life that we will now live while tasting it. In every age, Christ’s church has been subjected to many trials and tribulations by those who gather there. Yet, amazingly, they lived with joy because of this hope in Christ.
Finally, I would like to ask you all a question. Jesus Christ said.
“So you also must be ready” (Matthew 24:44)
All the preparations we make in this world have to do with this world. However, the preparation I have spoken to you about today, has to do with our eternity. If this is the case, then this preparation should be our first priority, no matter what.
Are you prepared for that day?
It is not about having spare water in the garage or a spare tire in the car at all times. I am now speaking to you about something that concerns your eternity. I am talking about how you are to live the rest of your life, now and in the future. am talking about the words with which the Lord Jesus put His life on the line.
It is open now, but the time will come when the door of Noah’s ark will be closed. If you are not yet prepared and do not have assurance, grab a hold of a pastor. Then ask how you can prepare for this. We are here in order to tell you about it.

５）これから起きる再臨を前に、私達の日々の暮らしはどのようなものであることが神様によって望まれていますか。私たちはどんな「備え」をしておくべきでしょうか （１テサロニケ４章１１節） 。
６）「あなたがたは主にあっていつも喜びなさい。繰り返して言うが、喜びなさい。あなたがたの寛容を、みんなの人に示しなさい。主は近い」（ピリピ４章４節、５節）とパウロは書きました。喜ぶこと、私達の寛容を示すことは簡単ですか？パウロは何を根拠にして、繰り返し「喜びなさい」、「寛容を示しなさい」と言っているのでしょうか。
７）ヨハネ第一の手紙５章４節、５節を読みましょう。人生には多くの試練や悲しいことがあります。しかし、その最後には勝利があるということを知っていることは、私達の今日の生き方にどんな影響を与えますか。
