「順境の日には楽しめ、逆境の日には考えよ」（伝道の書７章１４節）。
人生が順境ばかりではないことを私達は知っています。誰の人生にも逆境は必ずやってきます。そんな時に私達はどうすればいいのでしょうか。ソロモンはここで「逆境の時には考えなさい」と言っています。
今日は聖書の中の一人の人間、パウロにフォーカスし、彼が直面した逆境、すなわち１）価値観の崩壊、２）自身の心の問題、３）肉体の病という逆境を、彼がどのように乗り越えたかということを見ていきたいと思います。

逆境を無駄にしない

類を見ない財産と知恵、そして名声を得たイスラエル三代目の王、ソロモンが記した伝道の書を私達は隔週で見ております。
今日は「逆境を無駄にしない」というメッセージタイトルで、伝道の書７章１４節から皆さんと共に見ていきたいと願っております。
「順境の日には楽しめ、逆境の日には考えよ」（伝道の書７章１４節）。
順境とは何でしょうか。逆境とは何でしょうか。辞書によりますと順境とは『恵まれた条件で物事がすべてうまくいっている境遇』であり、逆境とは『物事がうまくゆかず苦労の多い身の上』と書かれていました。
日本語には順風満帆（じゅんぷうまんぱん）という言葉がありますが、それは願う方向に吹いている風を帆いっぱいに受けて舟が快調に進むことを意味します。逆境とはまさしく、その逆で、自分が進もうと願っている方向とは異なる逆風が吹くということになります。
親がわが子の人生に喜びと楽しみがあることを願うように、神様は私達が楽しむことを喜ばれるということをこれまで何度かお話してきました。ですから順境の時は、その背後におられる神様の恵みと祝福を忘れずに、ここに書かれているように感謝して楽しませていただきましょう。
しかし、人生が順境ばかりではないことを私達は知っています。誰の人生にも逆境は必ずやってきます。そんな時に私達はどうすればいいのでしょうか。ソロモンはここで逆境の時には考えなさいと言っています。
今日は聖書の中の一人の人間にフォーカスし、彼が自分の逆境をどのように乗り越えたかを見ていきたいと思います。そして、そこから私達は知恵をいただきたいと思います。
その人の名はパウロと言います。キリスト教には鍵となる人達がいますが、パウロもその一人です。彼はピリピ３章５節から６節において自身についてこう記しています。
5わたしは八日目に割礼を受けた者、イスラエルの民族に属する者、ベニヤミン族の出身、ヘブル人の中のヘブル人、律法の上ではパリサイ人、6熱心の点では教会の迫害者、律法の義については落ち度のない者である。
彼はその出生と家柄を示すことによって、彼がどんなに純粋なユダヤ人であるかを示し、またその血筋のみならず、彼は厳格に律法を学び、学ぶことのみならずそれを守り、まさしくそのことにおいては落ち度のない者であるということを書いています。
そして、その自らが学び、信じていたことによれば、自分の使命は教会を迫害することであり、それこそが神の御心にかなったことであると彼は考えていたということです。
この数節のパウロという人の略歴ですが、これらは彼が年月かけて築き上げたものだけではなく、彼が産声をあげた時に既に得ていたもの、その後に自らの学習と経験によって得たものであり、彼はそのようにして自らの生きる土台というものをコツコツと築き上げてきたのです。
まさしく彼の日々の生活の基準と判断はその築き上げたものによって導かれました。そのような意味で、それらはパウロの価値観だったと言えるでしょう。パウロはこれらのものを通して、自分を見、周りの人を見、世界を見ていました。
しかし、その彼の価値観に突風が吹きました。それは彼がその自分の価値観に従って、ある計画を実行しようとしていた矢先に起きました。使徒行伝９章１節‐２節にはこう書かれています。
1さてサウロは、なおも主の弟子たちに対する脅迫、殺害の息をはずませながら、大祭司のところに行って、2ダマスコの諸会堂あての添書を求めた。それは、この道の者を見つけ次第、男女の別なく縛りあげて、エルサレムにひっぱって来るためであった。
彼の情熱はイエスに従う者を捕らえて、獄に投じることであり、その情熱は殺害の息をはずませるものであったのです。それは自分が人生かけて信じ寄って立っているところへの情熱です。
しかし、彼が殺害の息をはずませて、ダマスコ近くに来ました時に（これは今日のシリアのダマスカスのことです）、突然、天から光がさしてパウロを包み込んだのです。彼はその光の中で地に倒れ、その時に声を聞いたのです。その時のことをパウロ自身が使徒行伝２６章においても回想しておりますが、その声はこう言ったというのです。
「サウロ、サウロ（これはパウロと名乗る前の彼の名前です）、なぜわたしを迫害するのか。とげのあるむちをければ、傷を負うだけである」（１４）。
彼はこの声を聞き、倒れた所から起き上がりましたが、その時、視力を失っており、以降、三日間、彼は見ることができず、その間、飲むことも食べることもしなかったと使徒行伝は記録しています。それまで自由にどこにでも行けていた者が誰かの手を借りなければ、そのことができなくなりました。
ここにはパウロの逆境があります。それは自分の拠り所としていた価値観がもろくも崩れ去るという逆境です。
コロナ下にあり、この神の光に照らされ、それまでの価値観が崩れてしまった方、いないでしょうか。自分のやり方、物の観方、判断の仕方、自分の価値観が全く通用しないことを今、しみじみと感じ入っているという方いませんか。
パウロはこの逆風に見舞われました。その時、彼は一切の食べ物も飲み物も受けつけなかったというのですから、相当なショックを彼は受けていたのでしょう。さぁ、その時、彼はどうしたのでしょうか。ヒントになることがガラテヤ１章１５節から１７節は記録されています。
15ところが、母の胎内にある時からわたしを聖別し、み恵みをもってわたしをお召しになったかたが、16異邦人の間に宣べ伝えさせるために、御子をわたしの内に啓示して下さった時、わたしは直ちに、血肉に相談もせず、17また先輩の使徒たちに会うためにエルサレムにも上らず、アラビヤに出て行った。それから再びダマスコに帰った（ガラテヤ１章１５節－１７節）。
どうやらパウロはダマスコ途上での経験の後、血肉に相談をせず、イエス様を直に知っている弟子にも会わずにアラビアに向かったようです。彼の築き上げたものはとても堅固なものでしたので、それを思い巡らすために彼は、神の前に出ようと決めたのでしょう。彼はその時、自分の価値観が揺さぶられる逆境の中、一人になり考えたのです。
彼は自ら専門としていた律法の書をもう一度、一から調べ、そのこととイエス・キリストがどのような関わりをもっているのかを来る日も来る日も考えたのでしょう。そして、それまで考えたこともなかったことを聖書の中に見出したのでしょう。驚き、立ち止り、涙し、心が震え、そんな毎日を過ごしながら、彼はいよいよ立ち上がり、ある所に向かいます。
彼はどこに行ったのでしょうか？ガラテヤ書の続きを読みますと、その後のことがこう記録されています。
18その後三年たってから、わたしはケパをたずねてエルサレムに上り、彼のもとに十五日間、滞在した。19しかし、主の兄弟ヤコブ以外には、ほかのどの使徒にも会わなかった。20ここに書いていることは、神のみまえで言うが、決して偽りではない。
彼はエルサレムにのぼり、イエスの１２弟子の中のリーダー格のペテロに会い、直接、キリストと共に過ごした年月からペテロが見聞きした証言を１５日間、聞いたのです。そして、そのイエスと共に同じ家庭で育ったイエスの実の兄弟、ヤコブからも話を聞いたのです。
パウロは賢い人です。アラビアで律法の書に向き合い続け、考えたこと、一つ一つを解釈し直した彼に最後に必要なことは、イエス・キリストを直接知っている者達の証言を聞くことでした。
そして、その証言と聞き、実に最後のボタンをしめ、新しいイエス・キリストにある価値観と共に立ち上がったのです。そして、そのことを知るに及び、彼はそれまで最も大切に思っていたことに対して、このようなコメントを残したのです。
7しかし、わたしにとって益であったこれらのものを、キリストのゆえに損と思うようになった。8わたしは、更に進んで、わたしの主キリスト・イエスを知る知識の絶大な価値のゆえに、いっさいのものを損と思っている。キリストのゆえに、わたしはすべてを失ったが、それらのものを、ふん土のように思っている。それは、わたしがキリストを得るためであり、9律法による自分の義ではなく、キリストを信じる信仰による義、すなわち、信仰に基く神からの義を受けて、キリストのうちに自分を見いだすようになるためである（ピりピ３章７節ー９節）。
日本国にはかつて神話があったといいます。まず第一に「安全神話」。日本の治安は世界一で夜道でも女性一人で歩けるという神話。第二に「会社神話」。終身雇用制のもと、とりあえず就職し、その会社に忠誠を尽くしていけば、雇用は最後まで保証されるという神話。第三に「マイホーム神話」。持ち家があればとりあえず大丈夫という神話。第四に「日本神話」。日本に住んでいれば大丈夫という神話。
私達はこれらの神話の上に人生設計を構築してきました。さて２０２１年、私達のこの神話には今も神通力があるでしょうか。
これらの神話から私達の価値観というものが生まれていたとするならば、一体、今、どれだけの日本人がこの神話を拠り所としているのでしょうか。言うまでもなく、このアメリカを思います時に、この国では既にこれらの神話は全て失われているのです。
そのような意味で私達は今、試みの時を生きているのであり、またこの試みはいつ終わるのか分からず、私達は途方に暮れているのかもしれません。
それでは、どうすればいいのでしょうか。そうです、もう一度、言います。逆境の時は考えましょう。そして、その逆境から、私達もパウロのようにイエス・キリストとの出会いを見いだすことができたら、その逆境すら私達にとって大きな益となるのです。
そして、私達の人生において、これら人生最大の収穫は大抵、逆境の時に起こるということを心にとめましょう。
もし、あなたが今、逆境のただ中にあるのなら、あなたは主から大きな収穫をいただくチャンスを前にしています。パウロがしたように、そのことについて考え、そして神が今、何をあなたに語りかけようとしているのか、その御声に心を向けてください。
パウロはこうして新しい人生を歩み始めました。しかし、それで彼の逆境がなくなったわけではありません。次なるチャレンジがやってきました。それは自分の心の問題でした。
かつてパウロが誇らしげに名のっていましたパリサイ人という派の特徴は、神の教えを１００％、自分の努力と熱心で守ることによって神に喜ばれようとすることでした。この生き方をしますと、人は神の教えを守らない（守れない）人達を許し難い人達と思うようになります。それ故に、先にお話ししたようにパウロはキリスト教徒に対する迫害に情熱をもっていたのです。
その時の彼の心中はとても分かりやすいものでした。すなわち「自分は正しい」、そしてキリスト教徒は「間違っている、邪悪だ」というものだったのです。しかし、神様はその彼の心にある、それまで人を断罪して指差していた、その指が自分にも向けられているということに気がつかされました。ローマ７章にはそんな自分の心に気がつかされたパウロの苦悩が書かれています。
15わたしは自分のしていることが、わからない。なぜなら、わたしは自分の欲する事は行わず、かえって自分の憎む事をしているからである。16もし、自分の欲しない事をしているとすれば、わたしは律法が良いものであることを承認していることになる。17そこで、この事をしているのは、もはやわたしではなく、わたしの内に宿っている罪である。18わたしの内に、すなわち、わたしの肉の内には、善なるものが宿っていないことを、わたしは知っている。なぜなら、善をしようとする意志は、自分にあるが、それをする力がないからである。19すなわち、わたしの欲している善はしないで、欲していない悪は、これを行っている。
彼は自分の心に分裂したものを見いだしています。すなわち、自分が欲している善をすることなく、欲していない悪をしているというのです。この気づきは彼にとっての挫折体験であり、それは逆境です。
彼はこの内なる闘いについて考え、そして「神よ、こんな私を救ってください」と祈ったに違いありません。そして、神はそれに答えてくれました。パウロは言いました。
24わたしは、なんというみじめな人間なのだろう。だれが、この死のからだから、わたしを救ってくれるだろうか。 25わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって、神は感謝すべきかな（ローマ７章２４節―２５a節）。
彼はこのみじめな自分を救ってくれるのは、あの時に私に光を照らした主イエスなのだということに気がつかされました。もし、皆さんが制御できないご自身の心で悩んでおられるのなら、ここにグッドニュースがあります。その心に気がつき、悩むということは、その心に神の光が照らされているということです。
あなたは今、光の中を歩いているということです。光の中を歩いていますから、それまで見えなかったものが見えているのです。コリント第二の手紙４章６節から１２節においてパウロも言っているではありませんか。
6「やみの中から光が照りいでよ」と仰せになった神は、キリストの顔に輝く神の栄光の知識を明らかにするために、わたしたちの心を照して下さったのである（２コリント４章６節）
そして、この光に照らされた者は主イエス・キリストによって、このような思いへと変えられていくのです。続いて、パウロは書いています。
7しかしわたしたちは、この宝を土の器の中に持っている。その測り知れない力は神のものであって、わたしたちから出たものでないことが、あらわれるためである。8わたしたちは、四方から患難を受けても窮しない。途方にくれても行き詰まらない。9迫害に会っても見捨てられない。倒されても滅びない（２コリント４章７節―９節）。
主にある皆さん、もし、皆さんが自らの心の問題という逆境にお悩みなら、主の光に照らされましょう。そうしますのなら、自分は神の御手の中にある土の器だということに気がつかされます。
土の器自体はもろい、弱い、しかし、その中には計り知れない神の力という宝があるということに気がつかされていく。それを受ける時に私達は四方から患難を受けても窮しない、途方に暮れても行き詰らない、倒されても滅びないという驚くべき生き方をするようになるというのです。
マザーテレサはこんな言葉を残しています。「結局のところ、それはあなたと神との間のことなのです。あなたと他の人との間のことであったことは、一度もなかったのです」
結局のところと言っているところに人間テレサの、この言葉に至るまでの彼女の戦いがあったことがうかがい知れます。結局、わたしが悟ったことは、全ての問題は「自分と誰か」の問題ではなく「自分の心と神様」との問題だったのだとマザーは言っているのです。
神の光に照らされ、自分の心が見せられるその時、私達は主の前に静まり、考えましょう。このことによって得ることができる収穫も私達にとってとてつもなく大きなものとなるでしょう。
最後のことをお話します。それは肉体への逆境です。パウロは自分の肉体に対して問題を抱えていました。コリント第二の手紙１２章７節‐１１節を拝読します。
7そこで、高慢にならないように、わたしの肉体に一つのとげが与えられた。それは、高慢にならないように、わたしを打つサタンの使なのである。8このことについて、わたしは彼を離れ去らせて下さるようにと、三度も主に祈った。9ところが、主が言われた、「わたしの恵みはあなたに対して十分である。わたしの力は弱いところに完全にあらわれる」。それだから、キリストの力がわたしに宿るように、むしろ、喜んで自分の弱さを誇ろう。10だから、わたしはキリストのためならば、弱さと、侮辱と、危機と、迫害と、行き詰まりとに甘んじよう。なぜなら、わたしが弱い時にこそ、わたしは強いからである。（コリント第二の手紙１２章７節‐１１節）
パウロは自分の心の問題について語りました。そして、ここで自分の肉体についても語っています。言うまでもなく、私達も彼と同じ肉体を有するものです。この体と私達の人生は始まり、この体と共に人生を終えます。この地上にあるもの全て、形あるものは必ず古くなり、やがて機能が低下し、いつかその機能が停止します。
ですから私達ができることはその機能を維持すること、その低下を遅らせる努力ですが、それにも限界があります。それはパウロとて例外ではなく、彼の肉体にはとげがありました。そして、そのとげと共に彼はその生涯を歩まなければならなかったのです。
自らの肉体の病に向き合うことは当初、彼にとって逆境だったと思います。彼はこのことについて、それを取り去ってくださいと三度祈ったと書いています。この三度は記憶に残るほどに彼がそれだけのことに打ち込んで祈った祈りを意味します。
彼は自分の肉体について考え、そして祈り込んだのです。そして、その彼に対して神様は一つの真理に導かれました。それは「わたしの恵みはあなたに対して十分である。わたしの力は弱いところに完全にあらわれる」ということであり、このことが彼をさらに大いなる者へと変えました。
そもそもどんなに優秀で、強靱な肉体をもつ人間であっても、その人がその生涯に出来ることというのはたかが知れています。しかし、この真理を知る時に、その「たかが」が「たかが」ではなくなるのです。なぜなら、私達の力の出所が自分であったものが、その出所が神となったのですから。
私達は聖書を開かなければ、こんな言葉には出会わないのです。一体、私達と同じ人間の誰の口から、私達が抱える肉体的な問題について「わたしの恵みはあなたに対して十分である。わたしの力は弱いところに完全にあらわれる」などという言葉が出てくるでしょうか。
まさしく、これは天から降りてきた言葉です。私達は自分に与えられた肉体と共に「神の力が私の弱さの中に完全にあらわれる」とはどういうことなのかということを私達は生涯、かけて学んでいくのです。
今日はパウロの生涯の中から「価値観への逆風」、「自分の心への逆風」、「肉体への逆風」ということをお話ししました。
これらは全て逆境と呼ばれるものです。パウロはそれぞれの逆境に向き合い、それらについて考え、祈り、神を仰ぎました。神はそれに応えて、それぞれの逆境に光を当て、そこからかけがえのない収穫をパウロにお与えくださいました。言い方を返れば、その逆境がなければ、それらの宝をパウロは見出すことができなかったのです。
今、もしかしたらそんな逆境と向き合っている方がいるかもしれません。私達はきっとこれからも様々な逆境に向き合っていくことでしょう。しかし、その時にそれを受け止め、考え、祈り、その逆境によって神様が私達に与えてくださろうとしている宝をしっかりといただくものでありましょう。
逆境を無駄にすることなく、それをチャンスに変えましょう！

Never let adversity go to waste.

We have been studying the book of Ecclesiastes for a few weeks. Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon, the third king of Israel, a man of unparalleled wealth, wisdom and fame.
Today, we will look at Ecclesiastes 7:14. The title of this message is “Never let adversity go to waste”.
In the day of prosperity be happy,
But in the day of adversity consider—. (Ecclesiastes 7:14 NASB1995)
What is a prosperity? What is adversity? According to the dictionary, “prosperity” occurs when everything is going well under favorable conditions, while adversity is when things are not going well and there are many hardships.
There is a saying In Japanese, “順風満帆：Junpu Manpan,” which means that the boat is sailing smoothly with the wind blowing in the desired direction.Adversity is just the opposite, when the wind is blowing in a different direction than the one you are hoping to sail.
I have mentioned several times that God takes pleasure when things are going well for us just as a parent wishes for his or her child to have joy and fun in life. In times of prosperity, however, let’s not forget the grace and blessings of God and let’s be thankful and enjoy it while it lasts.
But we know that life is not all about good times. Adversity always comes in life. What should we do when such times occur? Solomon tells us to “consider” him (God) in times of adversity.
Today we would like to focus on one person in the Bible and see how he overcame his adversity. And we would like to gain wisdom from it. That man’s name is Paul. There are key people in Christianity, and Paul is one of them. In Philippians 3:5-6, he writes about himself,
5(I was) circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless. (Philippians 3:5-6, NASB 1995)
He shows he is an authentic Jew by telling us his birth and family background, and writes that he not only honors his Jewish heritage, but also adheres to a strict interpretation of Jewish laws. He knows the Jewish laws and by adhering to them he is without fault.
According to what he had learned and believed, part of his mission was to persecute the church. He believed this to be the will of God.
These few verses provide a biography of Paul. It is one that took years to establish. It starts with his birth and shows how he matured as he gained knowledge and experience.
The standards and judgments of his daily life were guided by what he had learned. In this sense these were Paul’s values. It was through these values Paul gauged himself, the people around him, and the world.
But then a gust of wind blew and de-stabilized his values. It happened just as he was about to carry out a plan based on his then known values. In Acts 9:1-2 it says,
Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, 2 and asked for letters from him to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. (Acts 9:1-2 NASB 1995)
His passion was to capture the followers of Jesus and throw them into prison, a passion that could lead to taking the breath away from people (killing). It was a passion based on what he had spent his life believing and relying upon.
But as he came near Damascus (Syria today) with murderous intentions, suddenly a bright light shone from heaven and covered him.
He fell to the ground and heard a thunderous voice. Paul recounted the incident in Acts 26. The voice said: ‘Saul, Saul (This was his name before he called himself Paul.), why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ (Acts 26:14 NASB 1995)
The book of Acts records that after seeing the light and hearing the voice he rose from where he had fallen. He had lost his sight and for the next three days he could not see. He did not drink or eat and could not go anywhere without help.
Here we see Paul’s experience with adversity. We see the collapse of the fragile values on which he based his beliefs.
Have any of you been exposed to the bright light of God and had your sense of values shattered?
Do you have a sense that your way of doing things, your way of looking at things, your way of making decisions, your sense of values are not working as they should?
Paul was hit by a headwind. It must have been quite a shock for him as we see he refused to accept any food or drink at that time. What did he do about it? A clue is recorded in Galatians 1:15-17.
15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood, 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to Damascus. (Galatians 1:15-17 NASB 1995)
After his experience on the Damascus road Paul left for Arabia, without consulting flesh and blood (human beings) and without meeting the disciples who knew Jesus firsthand.
His beliefs were solid and firm yet he decided to come before God to contemplate them. He was alone to think about his situation in the midst of adversity that shook his values.
He must have gone through the book of the law (The Old Testament), which was his specialty, from the beginning again, and thought day in and day out about what it had to do with Jesus Christ.
He must have found something in the Bible that he had never thought about before. After days of wandering, stopping, crying, and with pain in his heart he finally got up and went to a place where he could think about what had happened and what it meant.
Where did he go? The rest of the book of Galatians records what happened next.
18 Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord’s brother. 20 (Now in what I am writing to you, I assure you before God that I am not lying.)
He went up to Jerusalem and met with Peter, the leader of the 12 disciples of Jesus, and listened directly to Peter’s testimony of what he had seen and heard during his years with Christ for 15 days. He also heard from James, Jesus’ own brother, who had grown up in the same household with Jesus.
Paul is a wise man. He continued to study and think about the book of the law in Arabia. Thinking about it and reinterpreting those scriptures one by one the last thing he needed was to hear the testimony of those who knew Jesus Christ firsthand.
He listened to the testimonies of the Apostles and something in his brain “clicked”. He gained new understandings and values in Jesus Christ.
Upon realizing this he made this comment about what he had held most dear to that point.
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. (Philippians 3:7-9 NASB 1995)
Japan used to have many myths. First, there was the myth of safety. The myth was that Japan was the safest country in the world and that a woman could walk alone at night.
Second is the “company myth. This is the myth that if you get a job and remain loyal to the company, your employment is guaranteed until the end of your life.
Third is the myth of owning your own home. The myth that if you own a house, you will be fine. The fourth is the “Japan myth. The myth that if you live in Japan, you will be fine.
We have built our life plans on these myths. Now, in 2021, do these myths of ours have divine power?
If our values were born from these myths, how many Japanese people are relying on them now? Needless to say, when I think of the United States, all these myths have already been lost in this country.
In that sense, we are living in a time of trial, and we may be at a loss as to when this trial will end.
So what should we do? Yes, I’ll say it again. In times of adversity, we should think about these things and if we have an adverse encounter with Jesus Christ like Paul did, even that adversity can be of great benefit to us.
And let’s keep in mind that in our lives, the greatest harvests often happen in times of adversity.
If you are in the midst of adversity right now, you have an opportunity ahead of you to receive a great harvest from the Lord. Think about it, as Paul did, and pay attention to what God is trying to tell you right now.
This is how Paul began his new life. But that didn’t mean that his facing adversity was over. The next challenge came. It was a matter of his own heart.
The Pharisees, as Paul used to proudly call himself one of them, were characterized by their desire to please God by adhering 100% to God’s teachings and laws with great effort and zeal.
This way of life makes people think that those who do not (or cannot) follow God’s teachings are not acceptable. As I mentioned earlier, this is why Paul was so passionate about persecuting Christians.
At that time, his mind was very clear. He said, “I am right” and Christians are “wrong and wicked”.
But God made him realize that the finger that he had been pointing at others, condemning them, was also pointing at himself. In Romans 7, we read of Paul’s anguish at being made aware of his own heart.
15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. (Romans 7:15-19 NASB 1995)
There is division in his heart. He does not do the good he wants. Instead he does the evil he despises. This realization is a frustrating experience for him, it is adversity.
He must have thought about this inner struggle and prayed, “God, save me from this. And God answered him. Paul said,
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Romans 7:24-25a NASB 1995)
Yes, he realized that it was the Lord Jesus who shone the light on him (Paul) and at that time (Jesus) saved me (Paul) from this misery.
If you are struggling with bad thoughts and actions you cannot control, here is the good news. Being aware of and being troubled by those thoughts and actions means that God’s light is shining on you.
You are now walking in the light. Because you are walking in the light, you are seeing things that you did not see before. Isn’t that what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:6-12?
6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6 NASB 1995)
And those who are illuminated by this light will be transformed by the Lord Jesus Christ into this kind of thinking. Then Paul writes.
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 8 we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; (2 Corinthians 4:7-9 NASB 1995)
Dear friends in the Lord, if you are troubled by adversity facing you being created by your own inner problems, let the light of the Lord shine upon you. Then you will realize that you are an earthen vessel in the hands of God.
The earthen vessel itself is fragile and weak, but we will be made aware that within it is the treasure of God’s immeasurable power.
When we receive it, we will be able to live an amazing life where we will not be distressed even if we receive tribulations from all sides, we will not be at a loss even if we face adversity and we will not perish even if we are knocked down.
Mother Teresa had this to say. “In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.” When she says “in the final analysis”, this shows the human side of Mother Teresa’s struggle.
In the end, what she realized was that the issue was not between me and someone else, but between her heart and God,”
When God’s light shines and exposes what is in our hearts let us be still before the Lord and realize after the adversity is over the harvest will be tremendous for us.I would like to make one last point. It is adversity to the flesh. Paul had a problem with his own body. Let’s look at 2 Corinthians 12:7-11.
7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! 8 Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. 9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-11 NASB 1995)
Paul talked about the problems of his own heart. And here he is talking about his physical body. Needless to say, we have a body just like his.
Our life begins with this body and ends with this body. Everything that exists on this earth, everything that has a form, is bound to get old, to lose its function, and to stop functioning one day.
Therefore, all we can do is try to maintain its function and slow its decline, but there is a limit to what we can do. Paul was no exception. He had a thorn in his flesh. He had to live with that thorn in his flesh.
I believe that facing his own physical illness was initially adversity for him. He writes that he prayed three times for it to go away. This three times means that he prayed with so much devotion that it will be remembered.
He considered and prayed about his body, and God led him to a truth. It was, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness” and this changed him into a greater man.
No matter how talented and strong a person is, there is only so much that he or she can do in a lifetime. However, when you know this truth, that “little” will no longer be “little.
Because the source of our power used to be ourselves, but now the source is God.
We have to open the Bible to find these words. Who in their right mind would say, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness,” about our physical problems?
These are the very words that came down from heaven. With the body that we have been given, we will spend our whole lives learning what it means for “the power of God to be fully revealed in our weakness.
Today we talked about “headwinds to our values,” “headwinds to our minds,” and “headwinds to our bodies” from Paul’s life.
These are all what we call adversities. Paul faced each of these adversities, thought about them, prayed about them, and looked to God.
God responded by shining a light on each adversity and giving Paul an invaluable harvest from it. In other words, without those adversities, Paul would not have been able to discover those treasures.
There may be people who are facing such adversity right now. We will surely face various adversities in the future.
However, we should accept them, consider them, pray about them, and receive the treasure that God is trying to give us through those adversities.
Don’t let adversity go to waste; turn it into an opportunity!
