新しい出発（２）：今日、心の棚に仕入れるべきこと
先週、私達は「過去の棚下ろし」ということについて見てきました。私達には各々、過去があります。時に私達はその過去を「思い出」と呼びます。そして、その思い出は私達に喜びと生きる力を与えてくれます。私は「思い出」について考える時に、既に天国に行かれた高木輝夫牧師のことをいつも思い出します。
高木先生は母をイエス様のもとに導いて下さった牧師で、その晩年の多くを病室のベッドの上で過ごしました。その時のことについて先生はこんな言葉を残しています。
『病室のベットで私は、過去の楽しい思い出ばかりを反芻しています。ですから皆さんも今のうちに、楽しい思い出をたくさん作っておいて下さい』。
私は今、病室のベッドの上にはおりませんが、将来、病室の天井を見て過ごさねばならない時がくることでしょう。その時にそれまでの人生において蓄えた良き思い出を心の棚から一つ一つ取り出したいと思います。そして、それを反芻して自分の人生に関わってくださった神様、家族、そして友人達に感謝をして過ごしたいと思います。
しかしながら、私達はそんな良き思い出ばかりが心にあるわけではないことを知っております。それゆえに、私達はそれらのものを主イエス・キリストの十字架と共に棚卸しして、新しい出発を始めましょうと先週はお話ししました。
そして、今日、お話ししたいことは「新しい出発」シリーズの２回目として、「今日、心に仕入れるべきこと」を皆さんと共に見ていきたいと願っています。
合衆国第３２代、フランクリン・ルーズベルト大統領はかつてこう言いました。昨日はヒストリー、明日はミステリー、そして、今日は贈り物。だから彼らは今をプレゼントと呼ぶ。
皆さんは「今日という一日は神様から与えられているギフトだ」という認識がありますか。このことは余命の告知を受けた日から思い始めることではなく、今日、心に思うべきことです。今日は神様が私達に与えてくださっている無償のギフトだからです。
普通の親なら我が子の幸せを願います。息子や娘が日々を笑顔で暮らしてほしいと願いますでしょう。彼らを祝福したいと思いますでしょう。もちろん人生には色々な荒波がありますが、それを乗り越え、その度にたくましくなってほしいと願いますでしょう。それが親心でありますでしょう。
僭越なことになりますが、父なる神様も子なる私達にそう願っていると思うのです。その父なる神の私達に対する御心は聖書を読む時にわかります。父なる神様は確かに私達を祝福したいと願っておられます。
これまで多くの方達に洗礼を授けさせていただきました。その時、洗礼を受ける方達と一緒に聖書について、神について、人間について、イエス・キリストについて時間をかけて学び、洗礼に備えます。
そして、洗礼を受けてクリスチャンとして、新しく生きるということはどういうことなのかと説明します。その中で必ずお話ししますことがあります。それは「日々の生活を見直しましょう」ということです。

ヨハネ黙示録においてヨハネはイエス様が私達の心の中に来られることを望んでいるということを示しました。「見よ、わたしは戸の外に立って、たたいている。誰でもわたしの声を聞いて戸を開けるなら、わたしはその中に入って彼と食を共にし、彼もまたわたしと食を共にするであろう」。ヨハネ黙示録３章２０節
この言葉は説明するまでもなく、私達がその心にイエス・キリストを迎え入れる時のことを言っているのです。
そして、その時というのは先週、お話ししましたように、イエス様がその十字架のご愛によって私達の過去の罪を全て赦して下さったということを信じ、受け入れた日のことなのです。
その時からキリストは私達の心の主（あるじ）となるのです。そう、このお方は私達の食卓の中心におられるお方です。そのイエス様が私達の心の中におられるのなら、自ずと私達はこれまで棚に置いてきたものが、果たして主なるイエス様が望まれているものなのだろうかという思いに至ります。
イエス様が私達の心の棚をご覧になる時に、見られたら困るというものはそこにないでしょうか。このような意味において私達は現在の心の棚を定期的に整理する必要があります。
ルカ１９章を見ますと取税人ザアカイとイエス様が出会った日の出来事について書かれています。彼はそれまで自分の職業上の有利性を用いて、不正なお金を懐に入れているような生活をしていました。その時、ザアカイは木によじ登り、イエス様を見ていました。そんなザアカイに対してイエスはこういわれたのです。
「ザアカイよ、急いで下りてきなさい。今日、あなたの家に泊まることにしているから」。ザアカイは急いで降りてきて、イエスを迎え入れました。そして、彼はイエス様を自宅に迎え入れて、食卓を共に囲んだ事でしょう。楽しい語らいの時をもったことでしょう。
このことはイエス様が罪人ザアカイの心の中に来てくださり、彼の人生の主となられたことを意味していたことでしょう。ザアカイはそのイエス様に向かって、誰も彼を諭していないのに、自分からイエス様に言ったのです。
「主よ、わたしは誓って自分の財産の半分を貧民に施します。また、もし誰かから不正な取立てをしていましたら、それを四倍にして返します」（ルカ１９章８節）。
このことはザアカイの心の棚に隠すかのようにして放置しておいたことでした。しかし、彼はそのことと主なるイエス・キリストは共におることができないということを悟ったのです。
ザアカイはそれまで不正を犯してでも自分を喜ばせるものを心の棚に蓄えていました。しかし、その日から彼の棚は主が喜ばれるものへと置き換えられていったのです。 そして、それは彼の人生を豊かにしたに違いありません。
皆さん、私達の心はどうでしょうか。その心の中にイエス様と同居できないものがありますか。いつの間にか、そんなものがここにもあそこにもあるなと聖霊様が、気がつかせてくれていることがありませんか。
それに気がついたのなら、今は恵みの時、救いの時、ザアカイがそうしたように今、それらを棚から出し、処分しましょう。このことは個人でなすべきことであり、また同時に共に暮らす家族がいるのでしたら、家族で話し合うこともとても有益でありましょう。
このことは私達が今もこれからもしていくべきことです。そのことによって私達の生活は整理され、私達が本来、集中すべきことにますます私達の心は向けられていきます。そして、それは私達に多くの祝福をもたらしてくれることでしょう。
さぁ、このことにより私達の心にはスペースが空きました。今日、私達がそのスペースに仕入れるべきことは何なのでしょうか。 パウロはこのことについてローマ１２章においてはっきりと書いています。
『兄弟たちよ。そういうわけで、神のあわれみによってあなたがたに勧める。あなたがたのからだを、神に喜ばれる、生きた、聖なる供え物としてささげなさい。それが、あなたがたのなすべき霊的な礼拝である。2あなたがたは、この世と妥協してはならない。むしろ、心を新たにすることによって、造りかえられ、何が神の御旨であるか、何が善であって、神に喜ばれ、かつ全きことであるかを、わきまえ知るべきである（ローマ１２章１節ー２節）。
「人を喜ばせる」ということなら私達は体験上、知っています。しかし、ここには「神を喜ばす」ということが書かれており、それについては、私達はあまり聞いたことがありませんし、もちろん学校や職場で、そんなことを話している人はいません。パウロはかつてこのような言葉を書き残しました。
「今わたしは、人に喜ばれようとしているのか、それとも、神に喜ばれようとしているのか。あるいは、人の歓心を買おうと努めているのか。もし、今もなお人の歓心を買おうとしているとすれば、わたしはキリストの僕ではあるまい」（ガラテヤ１章１０節）。
私達は人の目を気にするものです。そして、その人を喜ばせようとし、その歓心を得ようとします。人に喜んでもらうことは大切です。このことにより、私達の世界は互いへのケアーと平和を保つことができます。
しかし、神に喜ばれることを考えることなく、ただ人に喜ばれよう、その歓心を得ようということだけに奔走し、それに努めている者に対して、パウロは神に喜ばれることをまず第一とすべきだとここで言っているのです。
先に読みましたローマ１２章には『あなたがたは、この世と妥協してはならない』（ローマ１２章２節）という言葉がありました。この言葉は英語の聖書ですと 『 Do not conform to the pattern of this world』と書かれています。
そう、この世にはパターンがあり、それに従うことにより生じる問題をパウロは熟知していたのでしょう。この世に生きる私達はこの世のパターンの中に組み込まれます。そして、そのパタンは自分の生き方のパターンとなり、それらがやがて私達の心の棚を占めているもののパターンとなります。
しかし、そうではなくて、神を喜ばすことにまずフォーカスしてごらんなさい。
目の前で起きている事柄に対して、自分がどうあるべきか、何をなすべきかということを考える時に、何が神の御心であり、何が最善であって、神に喜ばれることなのかを私達はまず考えるべきです。
そして、そのことこそが、私達が心の棚に日々、蓄えるべきことなのです。私は今、ＣＳルイスのあの言葉を思い起こしています。
「もし、私がこの世で一番愛するものよりも神を愛するようになったら、この世で一番愛するものを今よりもっとよく愛せるようになるでしょう。この世で一番愛するものを愛するために神をおろそかにするようになるならば、かえってこの世で一番愛するものを全然愛していないという状態に進んでいってしまうのです。第一のものを第一にする時、第二のものは抑えつけられるのではなく、むしろ、さらに拡がっていくのです」
この「愛する」という言葉を「喜び」という言葉に置き換えてることもできるのではないかと思うのですが、いかがでしょうか。
「もし、私がこの世で一番、私や誰かを喜ばせることよりも、神を喜ばせるようになったら、この世で一番、私が喜んでいるものを今よりもっと喜ぶことができるようになるでしょう。この世で一番喜んでいるものを喜ぶために神をおろそかにするようになるならば、かえってこの世で一番喜んでいるものを全然、喜んでいないという状態に進んでいってしまうのです。第一のものを第一にする時、第二のものは抑えつけられるのではなく、むしろ、さらに拡がっていくのです」
イエス様が言われたあの不動の法則がこの喜びにも成り立つのです。「まず神の国と神の義とを求めなさい。そうすれば、これらのものは、すべて添えて与えられるであろう」（マタイ６章３３節）。
そうです、まずは神を喜ばせるように生きてごらんなさい、そうすれば、他の喜びも添えて与えられるであろう。
そう、神を喜ばせる生き方をしていく時に、何を隠そう、私達の心に喜びがわいてくるのです。さらにはそのことが私達の周りの人達にも喜びを与えていくことになるのです。
誰もが喜びと共に生きたい。その時にまず心に浮かぶことは「どうしたら自分を喜ばすことができるのか」ということです。しかし、あれもこれもと自分を喜ばせようと色々なことをしてみても何かが足りない。
それらは束の間のものであり、時が経てばまた心が渇くというようなことはないでしょうか。これこそがこの世のパターンなのです。
しかし、神を喜ばせようと言うところに私達のフォーカスがなされていくならば、私達には自ずと喜びがわきあがってきます。旧約聖書の時代を生きた預言者ネヘミヤは言いました。
「憂えてはならない。主を喜ぶことはあなたがたの力です」（ネヘミヤ８章１０節）。
ネヘミヤは紀元前４５０年頃に生きた人です。彼はバビロンに捕囚となっていたイスラエルの民が再び、エルサレムに帰還するにあたり、苦労してエルサレムの神殿の城壁を築きなおした人です。
その苦労は並々ならぬものでした。なかなか事が進まない、敵からの攻撃を受け、妨害される、一歩進んで三歩下がるというような日々を過ごしました。まさしく、それは肩を落としてしまうような毎日だったことでありましょう。
しかし、ネヘミヤはそんな自分の心を奮い立たせるかのようにして、うなだれるイスラエルの民に向けて言ったのです。「憂えてはならない。主を喜ぶことはあなたがたの力です」。
たとえ今日という一日が思い描いたように行かずとも、心配事が明日に持ち越しになるようなことがあっても、悲しみが心をふさぐような時も、主に喜んでいただくことに力を注ぎましょう。そして主の喜びを私達の喜びとしましょう。そこ私達の喜びの源があるのです。そこには我々の自力ではない、主から頂ける力があるのです。
イエスを心にお迎えし、その王座に座っていただくのなら、今日、その棚を主が喜んでくださるもので埋めていきましょう。ある時、私達はその棚を見て、気がつくでしょう。自分の心にも何にも代え難い喜びが溢れているということを。
先に父なる神は子である私達に祝福を注ごうとしていらっしゃるお話ししました。その子である私達が父なる神が喜ぶことを第一に心に留めて、日々を生きるのなら、父なる神様の喜びはどんなに大きいことでしょうか。
どうか覚えてください、天の扉が開かれて注がれる祝福に勝る祝福はこの世界にはどこにもないのです。
お祈りしましょう。
New Beginnings (2): What to store in the shelves of your mind, today.
Last week we looked at “Taking inventory of the past”. Each of us has a past. Sometimes we call the past “memories,” and they give us joy and the strength to live. When I think about “memories,” I always think about Pastor Teruo Takagi, who has already gone to heaven.
He was the pastor who led my mother to Jesus, and he spent much of his last days in a hospital bed. He left the following words about that time.
In my bed in the hospital room, all I’m doing is ruminating on all the good memories of the past. So for all of you, please make lots of good memories while you still can.
I am not in a hospital bed right now, but there will likely be a time in the future when I will have to look at the ceiling of my hospital room. At that time, I would like to take out from the shelves of my mind, one by one, the good memories that I have accumulated in my life. I would like to spend my time ruminating on them and thanking God, my family, and my friends for being a part of my life.
However, we all know that the memories in our hearts are not always good. Therefore, I told you last week that we should take inventory of those things with the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ and start a new beginning. And what I want to talk about today, as the second installment of the “New Beginnings” series, I hope to look with you at “What to stock your mind with today”.
The 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, once said. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that’s why they call it the present”.
Are you aware that this day is a gift from God?
The preciousness of our daily lives is not something that we should start thinking about the day we are told of our life expectancy, but it is something that we should keep in mind today, because today is a free gift that God is giving to us.
Usually, if you are a parent, you want your child to be happy. You want your son or daughter to live each day with a smile on their face. You want to bless them. Of course, there are many rough patches in life, but you want them to overcome them and become stronger each time. That is the heart of a parent, isn’t it?
I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but I think God the Father wishes the same for us, his children. The Father’s will for us can be seen when we read the Bible. God the Father certainly wants to bless us.
I have baptized many people in my life. To prepare for the baptism, we spend time together to learn about the Bible, about God, about people, and about Jesus Christ.
Then I explain to them what it means to be baptized and to live a new life as a Christian. There is one thing that I always tell them. That is, “Let’s review our daily lives.
When the president of a nation, a company, or the manager of a professional sports team changes their system drastically, it is because the leadership at the head of the organization has changed.
In the same way, when we become Christians, it means that the lord of our life’s changes. As Psalm 23 says, “The Lord is my shepherd” instead of “I am the Lord of my life. It means that our headship has changed from ourselves to Christ. And if that is the case, then we need to review our own lives and organize the shelves of our hearts so that they are pleasing to the Lord. In the book of Revelation, John-the author, reveals that Jesus is wishing to enter our hearts.
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me (Revelations 3:20).
These words refer to the time when we receive Jesus Christ into our hearts. And as I mentioned last week, that time is the day when we believe and accept that Jesus has forgiven us of all our past sins through His love on the cross.
From that moment on, Christ becomes the Lord of our hearts. Yes, he is the one who is at the center of our table. If Jesus is in our hearts, we will naturally wonder if the things we have put on the shelf are really what the Lord Jesus wants us to have.
When Jesus looks at the shelves of our hearts, is there anything there that we don’t want Him to see? In this sense, we need to periodically clean out the shelves of our current minds.
In Luke 19, we read about the day Jesus met Zacchaeus the tax collector. He had been using his professional advantage as a tax collector to pocket money. At that time, Zacchaeus had climbed a tree and was looking at Jesus. Then Jesus said to Zacchaeus,
“Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today”. Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Jesus.
Zacchaeus must have welcomed Jesus into his home and shared a meal with him. They must have had a joyful time of conversation. This would have meant that Jesus had come into the heart of the sinner Zacchaeus and become the Lord of his life.
Zacchaeus turned to Jesus, and though no one admonished him to, he said to Jesus himself,
“Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” (Luke 19:8)
This was something that Zacchaeus had left on the shelf of his mind as if to hide it. But he realized that this and the Lord Jesus Christ could not be together.
Zacchaeus had been storing things in his heart that had pleased him, at the cost of others. But from that day on, his shelves were replaced with things that pleased the Lord. And it must have enriched his life.
What about our hearts? Are there things in your heart that cannot exist together with Jesus?
Before you know it, the Holy Spirit is making you realize that there are such things here and there. If you have noticed them, now is the time for grace, the time for salvation, so take them off the shelf and get rid of them now, just like Zacchaeus did.
This is something that should be done individually, and if you have a family living with you, it would be very beneficial to discuss this with them. This is what we should be doing now and in the future.
This will organize our lives and direct our minds more and more to where our focus should be. And that will bring us many blessings. Now, this has left a space in our hearts. What do we need to do to fill that space today? Paul is very clear about this in Romans 12.
12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
We know from experience what it means to “please others”. But here we read about “pleasing God” and we have not heard much about it, and of course no one talks about it in school or at work. Paul once wrote these words
10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
We care about what people think of us. We try to please them, and we try to gain their pleasure. It is important to make people happy. This allows us to care for each other and seek peace in our world.
But for those who are only trying to please others without thinking about pleasing God, Paul is saying here that we should put pleasing God first.
In Romans 12, which we read earlier, the Japanese translation says, “Do not compromise with the world” (Romans 12:2). In the English translation, this phrase is written, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world.
Yes, there is a pattern to this world, and Paul must have been well aware of the problems that come with following it.
We are embedded in the patterns of this world, and those patterns become the patterns of how we live our lives, which in turn become the patterns of what occupies the shelves of our minds.
But instead, focus on pleasing God first. When we think about what what should be and what we should do in response to what is happening in front of us, we should first think about what is God’s will, what is best, and what is pleasing to God. And that is what we should be storing in the shelves of our minds, day by day. I am now reminded of these words of CS Lewis.
“If I come to love God more than the things I love most in this world, I will be able to love the things I love most in this world better than I do now. If we neglect God in order to love the things we love most in this world, we will end up not loving the things we love most in this world at all. When we put the first things first, the second things will not be suppressed, but rather expanded”.
I think we can replace the word “love” with the word “please”, don’t you?
If If I start pleasing God more than what pleases me or anyone else in the world, I will be able to be more pleased than what pleases me most in the world. If I neglect God in order to please the things that please me the most in this world, I will end up not being happy at all with the things that please me the most in this world. When we put the first things first, the second things will not be suppressed, but rather expanded.
That immovable law that Jesus said relates to this, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
Yes, to live a life that pleases God first, and other joys will be given to you as well. Yes, when we live a life that pleases God, no matter what we do, our hearts will be filled with joy. It will also bring joy to the people around us.
We all want to live with joy. The first thing that comes to mind is, “How can I make myself happy? However, even though you try to do many things to please yourself, something is missing. Isn’t it true that these things are only for a short time, and as time goes by, our hearts become thirsty again? This is the pattern of this world.
However, when our focus is on pleasing God, we will naturally be filled with joy.The prophet Nehemiah, who lived in the Old Testament era, said
Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
Nehemiah was a man who lived around 450 BC. He was the man who painstakingly rebuilt the walls of the Temple in Jerusalem as the Israelites returned from captivity in Babylon. The hardship was extraordinary. He spent his days struggling to make progress, being attacked and obstructed by the enemy, and taking one step forward and three steps back. It must have been very depressing days for him.
But Nehemiah, as if to cheer himself up, said to the Israelites who had their heads hung low,”Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Even if our day is not going as we had hoped, even if our worries are carried over to tomorrow, even if our sorrows are blocking our hearts, let us focus on rejoicing in the Lord. Let the joy of the Lord be our joy. Therein lies the source of our own joy.
Therein lies the power that we receive from the Lord, not from our own strength. If we are going to receive Jesus into our hearts and have Him sit on His throne, let’s fill that shelf today with the things that He delights in.
At some point, we will look at that shelf and notice, that our heart is overflowing with incomparable joy. Earlier, I mentioned that God the Father wants to pour out His blessings on us, His children.
If we, His children, live our lives with the things that please Him first in our minds, how much greater will be His joy. Please remember, there is no greater blessing in this world than the blessing that is poured out when the doors of heaven are opened. Let’s pray.
