神に喜ばれる教会（１１）：共に宣教活動に参加する

先週の日曜日、大倉牧師は「健やかな体は自ずと成長する」ということを話されました。確かに、私たちチャーチファミリーは、キリストの体として機能します。そして、肉体に多くの部分があり、それらが連携して身体を維持するように、キリストの体にも多くの部分、つまり私たち一人ひとりがあり、その中で異なる役割と責任を担っています。使徒パウロは、このことをエペソの教会に書き送りました。
また、キリストを基として、全身はすべての節々の助けにより、しっかりと組み合わされ結び合わされ、それぞれの部分は分に応じて働き、からだを成長させ、愛のうちに育てられていくのである。（エペソ書４章１６節）
それぞれの部分がその役割を果たし、皆がキリストの体を建て上げるために神様から与えられた賜物を用いて愛情をもって奉仕する時、体は共に成長し成熟し、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至ることができるのです。そのために、聖書は私たちに教えます。
11そして彼は、ある人を使徒とし、ある人を預言者とし、ある人を伝道者とし、ある人を牧師、教師として、お立てになった。12それは、聖徒たちをととのえて奉仕のわざをさせ、キリストのからだを建てさせ、13わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである。（エペソ書４章１１節－１３節）
ここには、キリストの体を構成する人々が奉仕の業が出来るようととのえるために、キリスト・イエスが使徒、預言者、伝道者、牧師、教師として、お立てになった、と書かれています。先週の日曜日、大倉牧師はこのことに関して、牧師の働きについて話されましたが、このような奉仕の働きのための整えの目的は、キリストの体が建てられ、信仰と神の御子を知る知識の一致に達するためです。今朝は、宣教師の働きと、キリストの体が共に宣教活動に参加することに焦点を当てたいと思います。
宣教師は、教会から派遣され、教会のある場所とは別の場所で福音を伝え、人々に奉仕することを目的としています。通常、宣教師は自分の国以外の国に派遣されますが、特定の地域に派遣され、そこで宣教することもあります。
イエス様は、教会を設立するために、彼から直接遣わされた使徒達を与えられました。”使徒 “とは、権威ある代表として遣わされた人という意味です。パウロを加えた１２人は、復活したキリストを目撃し、キリストから個人的な指名を受けた正式な使徒でありました。一世紀の使徒たちは、教会の土台を築くために与えられたのです。アポストロスという言葉は、主人から使命を与えられた召使いを表す言葉でもあるので、「宣教師」は現代ではこれに相当する言葉であります。
イエス様は、ご自分のメッセージを宣べ伝えるために、預言者をお与えになりました。 新約聖書の預言者たちは、教会を啓発し、戒め、慰めを与えました。イエスは福音を伝えるために伝道者を与えられました。 そのような伝道者たちは、国内外に福音を伝えました。イエス様は、神の言葉の指導と教えを通して群れを養い、ケアーをするために、牧師と教師を与えられました。
一般に、「使徒、預言者、伝道者」は教会と教会を結び、全体に奉仕し、「牧者、教師」は地域と会衆の事柄を担当したのです。これらの人々は、それぞれ自分の賜物に従って奉仕するよう神から召されてます。
バルナバとパウロが宣教師として派遣された経緯は、使徒行伝１３章１〜３節に記されてます。
1さて、アンテオケにある教会には、バルナバ、ニゲルと呼ばれるシメオン、クレネ人ルキオ、領主ヘロデの乳兄弟マナエン、およびサウロなどの預言者や教師がいた。2一同が主に礼拝をささげ、断食をしていると、聖霊が「さあ、バルナバとサウロとを、わたしのために聖別して、彼らに授けておいた仕事に当らせなさい」と告げた。3そこで一同は、断食と祈とをして、手をふたりの上においた後、出発させた。（使徒行伝13:1-3）
ここでは、バルナバとサウロ（パウロ）が宣教のために神から召され、聖別された後、アンテオケにある教会から祈りながら送り出された様子が見られます。宣教師の派遣は祈りによって進められるべきでありますが、宣教師の働きにも祈りが伴われ続けなければなりません。このように、パウロはエペソの教会に、宣教師である自分のために祈ることを勧めました。
18絶えず祈と願いをし、どんな時でも御霊によって祈り、そのために目をさましてうむことがなく、すべての聖徒のために祈りつづけなさい。19また、わたしが口を開くときに語るべき言葉を賜わり、大胆に福音の奥義を明らかに示しうるように、わたしのためにも祈ってほしい。20わたしはこの福音のための使節であり、そして鎖につながれているのであるが、つながれていても、語るべき時には大胆に語れるように祈ってほしい。（エペソ書6:18-20）
宣教師は祈りによって支えられるだけでなく、経済的な支援も必要です。パウロのピリピの人たちへの手紙にそのことが書かれてます。
15ピリピの人たちよ。あなたがたも知っているとおり、わたしが福音を宣伝し始めたころ、マケドニヤから出かけて行った時、物のやりとりをしてわたしの働きに参加した教会は、あなたがたのほかには全く無かった。16またテサロニケでも、一再ならず、物を送ってわたしの欠乏を補ってくれた。17わたしは、贈り物を求めているのではない。わたしの求めているのは、あなたがたの勘定をふやしていく果実なのである。18わたしは、すべての物を受けてあり余るほどである。エパフロデトから、あなたがたの贈り物をいただいて、飽き足りている。それは、かんばしいかおりであり、神の喜んで受けて下さる供え物である。（ピリピ書4:15-18）
ここでパウロは、ピリピの人々が自分の宣教活動を支えるために贈り物をしたことを称賛しています。そして、その献金は彼らの果実であること、つまり、献金によってパウロの宣教活動に参加できることは祝福であることを念押ししているのです。パウロは彼らの贈り物を、「かんばしいかおり、神の喜んで受けて下さる供え物」と呼んでいます。
また、パウロは、宣教のために与えられた贈り物を届けるために、ピリピにある教会から派遣されたエパフロデトについても言及しています。次が、パウロがこの手紙の前半で、エパフロデトについて書いたものです。
25しかし、さしあたり、わたしの同労者で戦友である兄弟、また、あなたがたの使者としてわたしの窮乏を補ってくれたエパフロデトを、あなたがたのもとに送り返すことが必要だと思っている。. . . 29こういうわけだから、大いに喜んで、主にあって彼を迎えてほしい。また、こうした人々は尊重せねばならない。30彼は、わたしに対してあなたがたが奉仕のできなかった分を補おうとして、キリストのわざのために命をかけ、死ぬばかりになったのである。（ピリピ書2:25、29、30）
エパフロデトは単なる配達人ではなく、パウロの大きな助けになっていたことがわかります。実は、パウロと一緒にいる間に彼はひん死の病気にかかったのですが、命がけでパウロを助け続けたのです。
このように、私達はここで、宣教師に与えることのできる追加的な支援について思い起こさせられます。主に、宣教師に援助と励ましを与えるために人を送ることです。このように、私たちは宣教師をよりよく支援する方法を考えるのがよいのですが、その方法の1つが、彼らを訪問することです。
また、手紙やメールで励ますのも一つの方法であります。時には、彼らにケアパッケージや宣教活動のために役立つ用品を送る機会も与えられています。このように、私達が共に宣教活動に参加できる方法はたくさんあります。このように、私達は宣教師が活動を続けられるよう、さまざまな形で協力をしています。これらの宣教師を支援する方法は、私達が神様から与えられた賜物を発揮し、キリストのより大きな体を支援する方法でもあります。
4なぜなら、一つのからだにたくさんの肢体があるが、それらの肢体がみな同じ働きをしてはいないように、5わたしたちも数は多いが、キリストにあって一つのからだであり、また各自は互に肢体だからである。6このように、わたしたちは与えられた恵みによって、それぞれ異なった賜物を持っているので、もし、それが預言であれば、信仰の程度に応じて預言をし、7奉仕であれば奉仕をし、また教える者であれば教え、8勧めをする者であれば勧め、寄附する者は惜しみなく寄附し、指導する者は熱心に指導し、慈善をする者は快く慈善をすべきである。（ローマ書12:4-8）
この聖句で述べられている賜物の中から、私は「勧め」と「寄附」という賜物を取り上げたいと思います。
勧めをする者であれば勧め、寄附する者は惜しみなく寄附し、
特にこの二つの賜物は、宣教活動に参加する際に用いることができます。宣教師が仕事を続けていくためには、宣教師への勧め（励まし）が不可欠です。すでに述べたように、定期的に手紙を書いたり、物を送ったり、あるいは訪問したりすることで、宣教師たちが励まされます。宣教師が活動を続けるためには、惜しみなく寄附をすることが必要です。
私たちチャーチファミリーは、とても寛大に寄附をしてくださる方がたくさんいます。この献金は宣教活動のためだけでなく、教会全体への献金でもあります。皆さんの惜しみない献金を主に感謝します。そして、皆さんの惜しみない献金があるから、教会として多くの宣教師を支援することができるのです。これもまた、神様があなた方に与えてくださった賜物を行使する方法であることを、皆さんに思い起こしていただきたいからです。
私達全員が宣教師として召されているわけではありませんが、宣教師を支援する賜物を行使することで、私たち全員が宣教活動に共に参加することができるのです。私達は、キリストの体の一部として宣教師とつながっているのです。そして、支援することで宣教師の働きの一端を担うことができるのは、私達にとっても幸いなことです。
今朝は、日本で、神様がどのようにスー・ファミリーを通して働かれているのかを聞くことができ、幸いであります。彼らのシェアーリングを聞いた後、彼らの上に祝福の祈りを捧げます。
A Church Pleasing to God (11): Participates Together in Missionary Work

Last Sunday, Pastor Okura talked about the fact that “A Healthy Body Grows by Itself”. Indeed, we as a church family, are to function as the body of Christ. And, as a physical body has many parts that work together to keep the body alive and well, the body of Christ has many parts, that is each of us, with different roles and responsibilities within that body. The apostle Paul wrote about this to the Ephesians church:
From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (Ephesians 4:16)
When each part does its work, when everyone lovingly ministers using the gifts given to them by God for the building up of the body of Christ, it will grow together and mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. To that end, the Bible teaches us:
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
Here it says that Christ Jesus gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip the people that make up the body of Christ for works of service. Last Sunday, Pastor Okura talked about the ministry of a pastor in regard to this, and the goal for such equipping for works of service was for the body of Christ to be built up to reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God. This morning, I want to focus on the work of a missionary and the body of Christ’s participation together in missionary work.
Missionaries are sent out by a church to share the Gospel and minister to people in a place other than where the church is located. Though usually missionaries are sent to a country other than their own, they can be sent to a specific community to minister in.
Jesus gave the apostles, who were sent directly by Him to establish churches. “Apostle” means someone sent as an authoritative delegate. Twelve men plus Paul were official apostles who had seen the risen Christ and had received personal appointment from Him. The first century apostles were given to establish a foundation for the Church. Since the word apostolos also describes any servant who is sent by his master on any mission, “missionary” is a modern equivalent term.
Jesus gave the prophets to proclaim His message. New Testament prophets provided edification, exhortation, and comfort to the church. Jesus gave the evangelists to share the Gospel. Such evangelists preached the gospel both at home and abroad. Jesus gave the pastors and teachers to nurture and care for the flock through the instruction and teaching of the word of God.
In general, the “apostles, prophets, evangelists” linked church to church and served the entire body; the “pastors and teachers” had charge of local and congregational affairs. Each of these people are called by God to serve according to their giftings.
The manner in which Barnabas and Paul were sent out as missionaries is recorded for us in Acts 13:1-3.
1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. (Acts 13:1-3)
Here we see how Barnabas and Saul (Paul) were called and set apart by God for missionary work, and were then prayerfully sent out from the church at Antioch. Prayer should proceed the sending out of missionaries, but prayer should also continue to accompany the work of missionaries. Thus, Paul exhorted the Ephesian church to pray for him as a missionary.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. (Ephesians 6:18-20)
Not only should missionaries be supported through prayer, but they should also be supported financially. We read of this in Paul’s letter to the Philippians.
15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need. 17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. 18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. (Philippians 4:15-18)
Here Paul commends the Philippians for their gift giving in support of his missionary work. He also reminds them that their giving is to their credit, meaning it is actually a blessing for them to participate in Paul’s missionary work through their giving. Paul calls their gift: A fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
Paul also mentions Epaphroditus who was sent to him by the Philippians church to deliver the gifts given for the missionary work. This is what Paul wrote about Epaphroditus earlier on in this letter:
25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. . . . 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him, 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me. (Philippians 2:25, 29, 30)
We see that Epaphroditus was not just a delivery person but was of great help to Paul. He actually became quite sick while with Paul, but continued to help Paul at great risk to his own life. We are thus reminded here of the additional support that can be given to missionaries. Mainly, to send people to provide help and encouragement to the missionary. Thus, we would do well to think of ways to better support our missionaries, and one way would be to visit them.
Another way would be to write letters and emails of encouragement to them. Sometimes we are given the opportunity to send them care packages and ministry supplies to them as well. Thus, there are many ways in which we can participate together in missionary work. In these various ways, we work together with our missionaries, so that they can continue on with their work. These means of supporting missionaries are also ways in which we can exercise our God given gifts, and thus support the greater body of Christ.
4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. (Romans 12:4-8)
From the list of gifts mentioned in these verses, I want to highlight the gifts of encouragement and giving.

These two particular gifts can be employed in participating in missionary work. Encouragement of missionaries is essential in order for them to continue on with their work. As mentioned already, missionaries can be encouraged by regularly writing to them, sending them things, and even visiting them. Giving generously to missionaries is essential in order for them to continue on with their work.
We as a church family have many people who are very generous in their giving. This giving is not just given to missionary work, but also to the church as a whole. I thank God for your generous giving! And because of your generous giving, we are able to support many missionaries as a church. I point out these gifts also, to remind all of you that this too is a way of exercising a gift God has given to some of you.
Not all of us are called to be missionaries, but all of us can participate together in missionary work through the exercise of our gifts in supporting them. We are connected to missionaries as a part of the body of Christ. And we are blessed to be able to be a part of the missionaries’ work by supporting them.
This morning, we are blessed to hear of how God has been at work through the Sue Family in Japan. After we hear their sharing, we will pray over them a prayer of blessing.
