「悲しんでいる人たちはさいわいである。彼らは慰められるであろう」（マタイ５章４節）
アダムがあの実を食べた時、彼はその責任を妻エバと、そのエバを彼に与えた神になすりつけました。そして夫から指さされたエバは蛇にその責任を向けたのです。私達は彼らの血を引いている者です。
私達は苦悩や理不尽な問題に向き合う時、アダムがエバにその責任をなすりつけたようにあの人、この人と自分以外の責任者を探し求めます。エバがサタンである蛇にその責任をなすりつけたことと同じことを、私達は今もしています。
私達は何でもかんでも、自分が直面する問題をサタンのアタックだと言うことがあります。確かにそれは正しい一面もありますでしょう。しかし、あの時、エバがあの実を食べたのは全てサタンのせいなのでしょうか。エバはサタンのアタックを受けてしまった気の毒な犠牲者なのでしょうか。サタンは確かに彼女を誘惑しました。しかし、その誘惑に従ったのは他でもない、エバなのです。
自分の心の問題、罪の問題を棚に上げて、全て人のせい、サタンのせい、神のせいとすることによって、私達は束の間の慰めを得るかもしれません。しかし、主イエスがここで言っている慰めは、このようなComfort Zoneに身を置くことではないのです。
ここに安住することにより、自分が抱えている心の問題に向き合うことがないのなら、私達の問題が解決されることはないでしょう。神は私達の人生を私達以外の人に託していないのです。神は私達に私達の人生を託しているのです。
あの人、この人ではなく、自らの罪を悲しむ者はさいわいだ。その人はその悲しみを完全に包む私の慰めを受けるだろう。

悲しみを経ない慰めはない

私達は今、「イエスの心を共有する」というテーマのもと、イエス様が語られた山上の教えを毎週日曜日に見ています。先週、本多牧師は「こころの貧しい人たちは、さいわいである、天国は彼らのものである」（マタイ５章３節）について、天国は心貧しく、謙遜に生きる者達のものであるということを話してくださいました。そして、今日はその続きの言葉となります。マタイ５章４節を見ていきます。
「悲しんでいる人たちはさいわいである。彼らは慰められるであろう」
私は仕事柄、多くの喜びに立ち会います。そして同じように多くの悲しみにも立ち会います。悲しみはこちらから求めずとも、あちらから私達に近づいてくるものです。そして、この世はできるだけその悲しみを避けるように、巻き込まれないようにと私達に教えます。
その悲しみの場面で「あなたは悲しんでいますね。とても幸いなことですね」ともし、私が言いましたら、人々は絶句するでしょう。おそらく私は追い出されるでしょう、もしかしたら蹴飛ばされるかもしれません。私達が今、向き合っているキリストの言葉は、このように私達の常識を逸した言葉なのです。
イエス・キリストはここで｢もう悲しまなくてもいいよ｣とか｢悲しんでいる人たちは、不幸ではないんだよ｣と言っているのではありません。｢悲しむ人たちは、なんと幸いなことか！｣と言っているのです。今日なら、この言葉はネット上で炎上してしまうことでしょう。
どうして悲しんでいる人たちが幸いなのでしょうか？そして、その悲しみとは一体、何なのでしょうか？この言葉を理解するのに、役立つ言葉をソロモンの言葉より引用しましょう。
伝道者の書７章２節、３節、「祝宴の家に行くよりは、喪中の家に行くほうがよい。そこには、すべての人の終わりがあり、生きている者がそれを心に留めるようになるからだ。悲しみは笑いにまさる。顔の曇りによって心は良くなる。」。
現代において、多くの人々は、快楽や笑いを求め、どうしたら愉快に過ごすことができるかを求めて生きています。しかし、ソロモンは喪中の家を訪ねて「死」について考える方が、祝宴に行って楽しく過ごすよりもいいと言います。喪中の家において、人間は必ず死ななければならないということを私達は知ります。そして、自分も例外ではないことを心に留めます。およそ人の悲しみの最大のものは私達が死ぬことです。生きる意思があるにもかかわらず、死ななければならない、この悲しみは私達を打ちのめします。
聖書を知る者は「なぜ、人は死ななければならないのか」という問いに対する答えを持っています。アダムとエバがあの禁断の実を食べたことにより、人は死ぬようになったと聖書は明確に書いているからです。
創世記２章１６節、１７節、16 主なる神はその人に命じて言われた、「あなたは園のどの木からでも心のままに取って食べてよろしい。17 しかし善悪を知る木からは取って食べてはならない。それを取って食べると、きっと死ぬであろう」。
彼らが禁断の実を食べた後、神が言われた通りの変化がこの世界に起きました。
そう、それは、人は誰しも１００パーセント、必ず死ぬということです。そして、同時にその時から人間の肉体は老いる宿命を負い、何かしらの生理現象により病を抱え、怪我により肉体は損なわれ、死に向かうようになりました。
イエス・キリストには親しい友がいました。ベタニヤのマルタ、マリア、そしてラザロという兄弟姉妹です。そのラザロがある時、死にました。イエスはラザロが死んでから、しばらくしてその亡骸が置かれた、彼の姉妹がいる場所にやってきました。
ヨハネ１１章３３節−３６節、 33イエスは、彼女が泣き、また、彼女と一緒にきたユダヤ人たちも泣いているのをごらんになり、激しく感動し、また心を騒がせ、そして言われた、34「彼をどこに置いたのか」。彼らはイエスに言った、「主よ、きて、ごらん下さい」。35イエスは涙を流された。36するとユダヤ人たちは言った、「ああ、なんと彼を愛しておられたことか」。
イエス・キリストはラザロの死を悲しみました。その時、イエス様は激しく感動し、心を騒がせ、そして涙を流されました。この感動というのは聖書の原語であるギリシア語を見ますと「馬が鼻を鳴らす」ことを意味するそうです。それは「腸がねじ曲げられるような、憤りの伴う感情」だとも言います。
人の死に伴う感情は悲しみです。しかし、イエス様はその悲しみと共に激しい憤りを感じたのです。イエス様は何に憤りを感じたのでしょうか。それは愛する者が死ななければならないという、その根源的な理由である罪に対する憤りです。そして、イエス様は泣きました。なぜイエスは泣いたのでしょうか。
この一文を読む時に、その涙はラザロの死を悲しむというよりも、イエス様はその死を悲しんでいる者達の姿を見て、泣いたということが分かります。ラザロが心臓発作を起こしたとか、脳梗塞になったということではなくて、人は誰しも、その罪ゆえに望まなくとも、死ななければならないということをイエス様は悲しまれたのです。
アダムとエバが犯した罪はさらにこんな影響を世界におよぼしました。あの実を食べた二人に神様は語りかけました。
創世記３章１６節−１９節、16 つぎに女に言われた、「わたしはあなたの産みの苦しみを大いに増す。あなたは苦しんで子を産む。それでもなお、あなたは夫を慕い、彼はあなたを治めるであろう」17 更に人に言われた、「あなたが妻の言葉を聞いて、食べるなと、わたしが命じた木から取って食べたので、地はあなたのためにのろわれ、あなたは一生、苦しんで地から食物を取る。18 地はあなたのために、いばらとあざみとを生じ、あなたは野の草を食べるであろう。19 あなたは顔に汗してパンを食べ、ついに土に帰る、あなたは土から取られたのだから。あなたは、ちりだから、ちりに帰る」。
このことにより、女は苦しんで子を産むことになりました。世界には三大激痛というものがありまして、諸説があるのですが、その中にこの「陣痛」が含まれます。人の誕生が苦しみと共に始まるということは、まさしく、その後の人間の人生には苦しみが伴うことが暗示されています。
また、このことにより天と大地はのろわれ、自然は人間に刃を向くようになりました。今日、いったいどれだけの人間がこの自然の暴走により、その財産や命を失っていることでしょうか。
そして、私達の労働には苦労がともなうこと、時にそれは徒労に終わるということもここに明記されています。このことについてあえて説明する必要はありませんでしょう。
そして、最後に人はどんなにその名を上げても、財を築いても、それらを何一つ持参せずに、土にかえるのです。
これらのことを私達は何と呼んでいるか、ご存知ですか。私達はこれらのことを「不条理、理不尽」と呼ぶのです。「不条理、理不尽」とは「道理にあわないこと」、「物事の筋道が通らないこと」を意味します。
自分の身になぜ、このことが降りかかったのか。その理由が分からないという不条理なことが人生にはたくさんあり、私達はそれを悲しみます。
どうか覚えてください。神はその初めに完全な物事の筋道を作りました。しかし、その筋道はアダムとエバが禁じられていた実を食べたこと、すなわち人の罪により、歪められました。私達の罪こそが、この世界の理不尽な出来事の原因であり、その背後にあるものなのです。
よく「神がいるのなら、なぜこのようなことが起こるのか？」と問う方がいます。
その発言の背後には、結局のところ、これら不都合なことの原因は神なのではないかという思いがあります。思い起こしましょう。アダムがあの実を食べた時、彼はその責任を妻エバと、そのエバを彼に与えた神になすりつけました。

私達の間に起こる問題の数々。今日、その中心で一番、悩ましいのは人との関係でありましょう。現代人は多くのストレスにさいなまされています。その多くは人間関係です。
先ほどの創世記にはアダムとエバが実を食べた後の世界では女性が男性に支配されるというようなことが書かれています。悲しいかな、今日も女性が抑圧されている国地域は多く、人間の長い歴史はまさしくこのことがまかりとおってきた歴史でありました。
神は人間を公平に作られたのに、そのところに力の関係が生まれることがここには暗示されています。この社会を形成する男と女の間がこのようにこじれてしまうということは、男女関係のみならず、私達の互いの関係がいびつなものとなるということです。それは私達が日々、見聞きし、経験していることなのです。
そして、その関係の混乱や破壊はどこから来ているのかと、一つ一つ、その原因を探っていきますのなら、 その行き着く先に、私達の心、そして、その心と対立する誰かの心があると思うのですが、皆さんはどう思われますか。
その心には何があるのか。エゴがあり、プライドがあります。妬みがあります。自分が認められないという不満と怒りがあります。
自分の心にこれらのものがあり、対峙する人の心にも同じものがあるのなら、私達の間に何が起こるかを想像することは難しいことではありません。
いじめの問題しかり、汚職問題しかり、飲酒運転しかり、戦争、はては環境問題まで、その背後にあるものはこの人間の罪にまみれた心です。自分の願いや、自分がしたいことを主張し、相手がそれに従うことを願うのなら、そこには衝突しか生まれません。
それがエスカレートしていくと、私達の間に不信感が生まれ、やがてそれは怒りに変わります。私達がこのような自分の心に気がつき、謙虚に、真実に向き合う時に、私達の心にわきあがってくる感情こそが「悲しみ」なのです。
この一週間、私の頭の中を巡っていた言葉があります。その言葉はあのインドのスラムに生涯を捧げたマザーテレサの言葉です。
「悲しそうな顔をしている人を見ると、この人はまだ何かを手放すことができないのだなと私は思います」
マタイ１９章には一人の金持ちの青年の話があります。彼はイエス様に尋ねます。１６節、
マタイ１９章１６節
「先生、永遠の命を得るためには、どんな良いことをしたらいいでしょうか」その彼の心には「自分は完全に律法を守って来た」という自負心がありました。彼の心には「自分に足りないものなどはないだろう」というプライドがあったのです。
ですから、きっと彼は「いいや、あなたにはもう足りないことはない。それで十分だ。よくやっているね」というイエス様の言葉を期待していたことでしょう。その彼にイエス様は言いました。２１節、
マタイ１９章２１節「もしあなたが完全になりたいと思うなら、帰ってあなたの持ち物を売り払い、貧しい人々に施しなさい。そうすれば、天に宝を持つようになろう。そして、わたしに従ってきなさい」。
この言葉を聞いた青年は、なんと反応したでしょうか。「そうします！」と言ったでしょうか。２２節、
マタイ１９勝２２節「この言葉を聞いて、青年は悲しみながら立ち去った。たくさんの資産を持っていたからである」
彼はがっくりと肩を下ろして、悲しみながら主イエスのもとを立ち去っていったのです。あたかも主イエスは彼が、そのようなことができないということを前もって知っていたかのように、彼をあえて悲しませました。
イエス様は自分を第一とし、自分の義をたてる彼にはっきりと、彼の弱さと限界を示し、彼の不完全さを示されたのです。そして、彼はそれを悲しみました。
この悲しみと共に、この青年がどのような人生を送ったのか聖書は記録していません。彼が自分のプライドに気がつかされ、その心を悲しみ、悔い改めて、主の大きな慰めに包まれたことを願います。パウロはこの悲しみについて、こう書いています。２コリント７章８節から１０節、
２コリント７章８節−１０節
8そこで、たとい、あの手紙であなたがたを悲しませたとしても、わたしはそれを悔いていない。あの手紙がしばらくの間ではあるが、あなたがたを悲しませたのを見て悔いたとしても、9今は喜んでいる。それは、あなたがたが悲しんだからではなく、悲しんで悔い改めるに至ったからである。あなたがたがそのように悲しんだのは、神のみこころに添うたことであって、わたしたちからはなんの損害も受けなかったのである。10神のみこころに添うた悲しみは、悔いのない救を得させる悔改めに導き、この世の悲しみは死をきたらせる。
世の悲しみは私達に自分を責め、傷つけ、もしくは、その責めを誰かに押しつけてどうにか自分を保とうとさせます。
言うまでもなく、そこには何の解決も希望もありません。しかし神様のみ心に添った悲しみは、私たちを生かします。私達を慰め、私達を救います。
神のみ心に沿った悲しみは、私たちを神さまの御前に出ることをうながし「悔いのない悔い改め」に導くのです。そして、神はその悔いた心をかろしめられず、人知を超えた慰めをもって私達を包んでくださるのです。それこそが、主が私達に求めている人生なのです。
イエス様は十字架におかかりになる直前に、ゲッセマネの園で父なる神に祈りました。その時にイエス様は何と祈られたのか、覚えていますか。マタイ２６章３８節、
マタイ２６章３８節『そして、彼らに言われた。「わたしは死ぬばかりに悲しい。ここを離れず、わたしと共に目を覚ましていなさい。」』
十字架につく直前、イエス様は死ぬほどの悲しみを感じていました。皆さんは、これまでに死んでしまうのではないかと思うほどの悲しみを経験したことがありますか。キリストのその悲しみは何だったのでしょうか。
人の悲しみの根源にある人間の罪の裁きを、私達に代わり、十字架の上で一身に受け止める、その悲しみがイエス様のお心を圧倒したのではないでしょうか。そして、その十字架の死により、私達が罪を悲しみ続けることのないように、ご自身の命と引き換えに、私達に罪からの完全な赦しをお与えくださったのです。
そう、それは一重に、愛と慰めに満ちた一言を私達に語りかけるためです。「あなたの罪は贖われた。あなたはもう大丈夫だ。安心していきなさい」。ですから、イエス様は言われたのです。悲しむものはさいわいだと。あなたはこの不動の慰めを私から得るからだ。
主にある皆さん、どうかお心にお留めください。この主の慰めは、悲しみを経なければ受け止めることができないものなのです。私達が自分の罪に気がつき、それを悲しむことがなければ、主が無条件でくださる救いの意味は分からないし、その無限の愛を受け止めることはできないのです。
主イエスは罪がもたらす死という理不尽な力が、心から愛している者達を悲しみのどん底に突き落とすのを見たのです。主はその罪にハラワタが煮え返るような憤りを感じたのです。
そして、このお方は、その罪から私達を救い出す唯一の方法はご自身が、私達の罪の身代わりとなり、十字架にかかる以外にないということを知っていたのです。
その主が言われます。悲しむ者達よ、あなたはさいわいだ。あなたの悲しみを私は私の命と引き換えに受け止めた。だから、私の慰めに包まれなさい。その慰めによって生きなさい。
「悲しんでいる人たちはさいわいである。彼らは慰められるであろう」
お祈りしましょう。
There Is No Comfort Without Sorrow

With the message theme “Sharing the Heart of Jesus”, every Sunday, we are now looking at Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount. Last week, Pastor Honda spoke about “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3), and talked about heaven belonging to those who are poor in spirit and live humbly.
And today, we will look at the words that follow next. We will look at Matthew 5:4.“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
In my work, I witness many joys. I also witness many sorrows. Sorrows come to us on its own without our seeking it. And the world tells us to avoid such sorrows as much as possible, and to not get drawn into it.
If I were to say in such a time of sorrow, “You are mourning. How blessed you are!”, people would scream.I would probably be thrown out, and maybe even literally be kicked out. The words of Christ that we are now looking at are thus words that are beyond our common understanding.
Jesus Christ is not saying here, “You don’t have to mourn anymore” or “Those who mourn are not unhappy”. He is saying, “How blessed are those who mourn!” Today, these words would go viral on the Internet.
Why are those who mourn blessed? And what exactly is that mourning? Let me quote from Solomon’s words to help us understand these words.
Ecclesiastes 7:2, 3
It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, because that is the end of every man, and the living takes it to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, for when a face is sad a heart may be happy.
In this day and age, many people live their lives in search of pleasure, laughter, and how to have a good time. However, Solomon says that visiting a house in mourning and contemplating “death” is better than going to a feast and having a good time. In the house of mourning, we learn that all people must die. And take to heart that are we ourselves are no exception. The greatest of all human sorrows is that we die. This sorrow, that we have to die despite our will to live, devastates us.
Those who know the Bible have the answer to the question, “Why must people die?” This is because the Bible clearly states that people die, because Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit.
Genesis 2:16-17
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
After they ate the forbidden fruit, changes occurred in this world just as God had said.Yes, that means that everyone, 100 percent of the time, will certainly die. And at the same time, from that time on, the human body was destined to age, to have diseases due to some physiological phenomenon, to have injuries that impair the body, and to face death.
Jesus Christ had close friends. Martha of Bethany, Mary, and Lazarus, who were sisters and brother. One day, Lazarus died. A little while after Lazarus died, Jesus came to the place where his sister was, which was where his corpse was entombed.
John 11:33-36
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
Jesus Christ mourned the death of Lazarus. At that time, Jesus was deeply moved, His heart was troubled, and He wept. This expression of His weeping is said to mean “to snort like a horse” in the original Greek of the Bible. It is also said to be “a gut-wrenching, indignant feeling”.
The emotion associated with the death of a person is sorrow. However, along with that sorrow, Jesus felt intense indignation.
What did Jesus feel indignant toward? It is indignation at sin, which is the root reason why a loved one must die. And Jesus wept. Why did Jesus weep?
When reading this passage, it is clear that the tears were not so much for Lazarus’ death, but that Jesus wept at the sight of those who were mourning over his death. Jesus was saddened, not that Lazarus had a heart attack, or had a stroke, but that we all have to die because of our sins, even if we don’t want to die.
The sin committed by Adam and Eve further affected the world in this way. God spoke to the two who ate that fruit.
Genesis 3:16-19
16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” 17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”
Due to sin, it has caused women to have severe pain in childbearing.There are various theories about the three most severe pains in the world, and this “labor pain” is included among them. The very fact that human birth begins with suffering, implies that the subsequent life of the human will be accompanied by suffering.
Also, due to sin, it has caused the heavens and the earth to be cursed, and nature has turned on humans. How many people today are losing their property and their lives due to this runaway destruction of nature?
And, it is also clearly stated here that our labor involves hard work, and that sometimes it ends in futility. I don’t think I need to venture an explanation of this.
And in the end, no matter how much one makes a name for oneself, no matter how much wealth one amasses, one cannot hold on to any of that, but returns to the ground.
Do you know what we call these things? We call these things “absurd, irrational”. “Absurd, irrational” means “not being reasonable” or “things not making sense”.
Why did this happen to me? There are so many absurd things in life that we don’t understand the reasons for, and we mourn these things.
Please remember. God made a perfect course of things in the beginning. However, that course was distorted by Adam and Eve’s eating of the forbidden fruit, that is human’s sin. Our sin is the cause of and what is behind the irrational events of this world.
Some people often ask, “If there is a God, why do these things happen?” Behind that statement is the thought that, after all, God is the cause of these inconveniences. Let us recall. When Adam ate the fruit, he blamed his wife Eve, and God who gave her to him.
And when her husband pointed the finger at her, Eve turned the blame toward the serpent. Their blood flows through our veins. When we are faced with suffering and irrational problems, we look for someone other than ourselves to blame, just as Adam placed the blame on Eve. We are still doing the same thing that Eve did when she placed the blame on the serpent, Satan.
We sometimes say of the problems we face, that anything and everything is an attack of Satan. That is certainly true in one respect. However, was it all Satan’s fault that Eve ate that fruit at that time? Is Eve a poor victim of Satan’s attack?
Satan certainly tempted her. But it was Eve who gave in to that temptation. We may gain brief comfort by putting our own heart and sin problems on the shelf by blaming it all on others, Satan, or God. However, the comfort the Lord Jesus is talking about here is not to put oneself in such a Comfort Zone.
If we do not face the problems of our own hearts by settling here comfortably, our problems will never be resolved. People in the Lord, God has not entrusted our lives to anyone but ourselves. God entrusts us with our own lives.
The Lord Jesus says. Blessed are those who mourn over their own sins, and not over other people’s sins. That person will receive My comfort, which will completely cover their mourning.
Of the many problems that arise among us, today, what is most vexing and at the center of it all, is probably our relationships with people. People today are under a lot of stress. Much is due to human relationships.
The Book of Genesis, which I mentioned earlier, says something to the effect that in the world after Adam and Eve ate the fruit, women will be dominated by men. Sadly, there are many areas of the world where women are still oppressed today, and the long history of mankind is a history of this very thing.
It is implied here that God made people impartially, and yet a relationship of power is created at that point. The fact that the relationship between the men and women who form this society is thus strained means that not only the relationship between men and women, but also our relationship with each other is warped.
It is what we see, hear, and experience every day.
And if we are going to examine, one by one, the cause of where the confusion and destruction of the relationship is coming from, I think it will lead us to our heart, and someone else’s heart that is in conflict with our heart. What do you think?
What is in that heart? There is ego and there is pride. There is envy. There is frustration and anger of not being recognized.
If these things are in our heart, and the same things are in the hearts of those we confront, it is not difficult to imagine what might happen between us.
Whether it is bullying, corruption, drunk driving, war, or even environmental issues, what lies behind it all is this human sin-ridden heart. If you insist on your own wishes and what you want to do, and hope that the other person will follow along, then there will only be conflict.
As it escalates, it creates distrust between us, which eventually turns into anger. When we become aware of our own hearts and face them humbly and truthfully, the emotion that wells up in our hearts is “sorrow”.
There is a word that has been going through my mind this past week. The words are those of Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to the slums in India.
“When I see someone with a sad look on their face, I think that this person is not ready to let go of something yet.”
In Matthew 19, there is the story of a rich young man. He asks Jesus (verse 16):

“Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
In his heart, he had the self-confidence that he had kept the law perfectly.There was pride in his heart that he was not lacking in anything. So, he was probably expecting Jesus to say to him, “No, you are not lacking anything. That’s enough. You are doing well.” Jesus said to him (verse 21):
Matthew 19:21
“If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
What was the young man’s response when he heard these words? Did he say, “I will!”? Verse 22:

When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
He lowered his shoulders dejectedly, and sadly walked away from the Lord Jesus. It was as if the Lord Jesus knew in advance that he could not do such a thing, and purposefully made him sad.
Jesus clearly showed him his weakness, limitations, and his imperfection, as one who put himself first and relied on his own righteousness. And he was saddened by it.
The Bible does not record how this young man lived along with this sorrow.
I hope that he was made aware of his pride, mourned the condition of his heart, repented, and that he was surrounded by the great comfort of the Lord. Paul writes of this sorrow in 2 Corinthians 7:8-10.

8 Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
The sorrows of the world make us blame ourselves, hurt ourselves, or try to preserve ourselves somehow by imposing that blame on someone else.
Needless to say, there is no resolution or hope in that. But sorrow that is aligned with God’s will enlivens us. It comforts us and saves us.
Sorrow that is in line with God’s will leads us to “repentance that leaves no regret” by urging us to come into God’s presence. And God does not despise that contrite heart, but enwraps us with a comfort that is beyond human understanding. That is the life the Lord wants us to have.
Just before Jesus went to the cross, He prayed to God the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane. Do you remember what Jesus prayed at that time? Matthew 26:38:

Then He said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.”
Just before His crucifixion, Jesus felt sorrow to the point of death. Have you ever experienced such sorrow that you thought you were going to die? What was Christ’s sorrow?
To take the judgment of human sin, which is at the root of human sorrow, on our behalf, and to take it all on the cross, that sorrow must have overwhelmed Jesus’ heart. And through His death on the cross, He gave us complete forgiveness from sin in exchange for His life, so that we would not have to continually mourn over our sins.
Yes, in a nut-shell, it is to speak words filled with love and comfort to us. “Your sins have been paid for. You are all right. Go in peace.” Blessed are those who mourn. For you will have this steadfast comfort from Me.
People in the Lord, please take this to heart. This comfort of the Lord is something that cannot be received without going through mourning. If we are not aware of our sins and mourn over them, we will not know the meaning of salvation, which the Lord gives unconditionally, and we will not be able to receive His infinite love.
The Lord Jesus saw the irrational power of death brought about by sin plunge those He loved dearly into the depths of sorrow. The Lord felt a harrowing indignation at that sin.
And, He knew that the only way to deliver us from our sins was for Himself to take the place of our sins and go to the cross. The Lord says: Blessed are you, O you who mourn! I accepted your mourning in exchange for My life. Therefore, be wrapped in My comfort. Live by that comfort.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
