皆さんに一つの問いかけをしたいと思います。それはこういう問いかけです。あなたは「人が神になること」と「神が人となること」、どちらが信じられますか？
世界には数多くの宗教がありますが、その多くは「人が神となる」ということをうたっています。あるカリスマ性をもったリーダーが自らを神と言い出す、あるいは回りの者達がそう担ぎ出す。そのような宗教が世にはたくさんあります。しかし、多くの場合、その自称神である人間はスキャンダルによって失脚します。金銭問題、倫理的な問題です。なぜ、自称、神がスキャンダルを犯すのか。なぜなら、彼らは神ではなく、私達と同じ人間だからです。
中国の兵法にはこんな戦略があるそうです。それは「敵の将を傲慢にさせる戦略」であり、これには大きな効果があるそうです。彼らが傲慢になる時、彼らは自らを見失い、それが戦果に悪影響を与え、やがて倒れるという戦法です。「あなたこそ神です」と祭り上げられれば、その人は自分の心のエゴを抑えることができなくなります。そして、その人は最後に必ず死に、全ての人間と同じように土に還るのです。
私は「人が神となる」とは思いません。私は死後の世界を信じますが、私は死んで神とはなりません。私は滅多に「絶対」という言葉を使いませんが、このことには確信を持って言えます。人は神にはなり得ません。死んで神となることもありません。絶対にありません。私は日々、色々な思い違いや過ちを犯す者です。子供達の皿に盛られたアイスクリームの方が、私のものより少し多いだけで、心が騒く。そのような人間を神と呼んではいけません。見ることも難しい小さな棘が小指に刺さっただけで大騒ぎし、今まで読んでいた字が見えなくなっていくような人間が神になることは絶対にあり得ません。

処女降誕：イエスを仰ぎ見て光を得よ！

私達は今朝も「使徒信条」を唱えました。その中に、こんな一文があります。
「主（イエス・キリスト）は聖霊によりてやどり、処女マリアより生まれ」
よくよく考えますと、私達はすごい事を唱えています。すなわち、私達はこう言っているのです。「主イエス・キリストは、男と女の関係なしに、聖霊によって、処女マリアから生まれたことを私は信じます」
傍からこの言葉を聞いている人達の中には「いったいこの人は何を言っているのか！」と驚くのではないかと思います。しかし、今日、全世界の約三分の一の人達がこのことを、その信仰の告白としています。聖書は分厚い書物ですが、その最初のページを開きますと、その一番最初にこう書いてあります
創世記１章１節 (Genesis 1:1)「はじめに神は天と地とを創造された」。
このシンプルな言葉の前に「これから書くことをあなたたちは理解できないかもしれませんが・・・」というような前文はありません。この言葉は明確に、当然のごとく、堂々と記されています。ですから、この言葉は短くありながら、とてもインパクトのある言葉となっています。
１８４３年、新島襄（じょう）という人が日本に誕生しました。数年前、NHKが彼女の妻、新島八重を「八重の桜」という大河ドラマにしたことは、私たちの記憶に新しいことです。
新島襄はこの創世記の「はじめに神は天と地を創造された」という言葉に心が強く打たれました。なぜなら、それまで彼が知っていた神々とは、人間が自分達の願いを叶えるために、自らの手によって作り上げたものであったからです。
その神々は箱の中や、祠（ほこら）の中に置かれました。その神々は人間の手によって埃が払われ、必要とあれば人間の手によって別の場所に移されました。そして、時が経てば、人間の手によって修繕が必要な神々でした。
昔も今も「はじめに神は天と地とを創造された」（創世記１章１節）という聖書の言葉の前を多くの人達は素通りします。しかし、新島はこの聞いたこともないスケールの大きな言葉を前に、雷に打たれたような衝撃を受けたのです。
その後、彼は１０年間、米国に留学し、キリスト教を基礎とした学校を建てたいというビジョンと共に帰国しました。そのビジョンが叶い、彼が創立した大学が現在、京都にある同志社大学なのです。同志社大学の始まりには「はじめに神は天と地を創造された」という一文によって、自らの生き方を決めた一人の人間の祈りとビジョンがあったのです。この天地創造について、この言葉に続く創世記１章２節において、こんなことが記されています
創世記１章１節 (Genesis 1:1)「地は形なく、むなしく、やみが淵のおもてにあり、神の霊が水のおもてをおおっていた」。
これは神が天と地を創造する前のこの世界の状態です。その時、地は形なく、むなしく、闇が淵のおもてにあり、神の霊が水のおもてをおおっていたというのです。これらの言葉はその時の世界は混沌としており、まだ秩序がないような状態だったということを私達に伝えます。このようなところから神はその創造のみわざを始められたのです。
そして、今朝、特に注目したいのは「神の霊」というものが、まさしくその創造の現場に既に存在していたということです。それは無から有を生み出す創造に、この神の霊が関与していたということです。
英語聖書はその時の神の霊の様子をthe Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.と記しています。それはまるで鳥が水の上で羽ばたいているような様です。神の霊の羽ばたきによる風によって、新しい創造が始まっていくような光景です。
私達は今日、唱えました、「主は聖霊によりて宿り」。混沌とした、虚しい世界において、天地の創造のみわざに関与した神の霊が、一処女の胎内に命を植えつけたのです。創造以前の世界において、天地創造に関与された神の霊が、一処女の胎内に命を授けることは無理ということがありますでしょうか。
二週間前にもお話ししましたが、私達がありえないと思うことは、有り得ないのではなくて、私達の理解がそこまで行き届かないということなのです。もし、聖書に記されている出来事が全て私達に理解できる、常識的なことだけであるならば、それは聖書が「神について」書かれている書ではないということになるのです。そこに書かれているのは「全能なる神」なのです。
聖書は聖霊によってイエスを宿した女の名前を、はっきりとマリアと示しています。神の子を産んだというような女性、そのような宿命を背負った彼女がどんな人生を歩んだのか、私達は色々なことを想像します。マリアは生涯、人々から奇異の目を向けられたことでしょう。「聖霊によって子を宿った」と主張する彼女を、多くの人達は気が狂っていると思ったことでしょう。許嫁ヨセフ以外の男で、彼女と関係を持った人は誰なのかというようなゴシップも流れたに違いありません。
しかし、彼女が死んでから何百年もたつと、今度は彼女を神のような存在として、聖母として祭り上げる者達があらわれました。私達が中世の絵画によく見るものは、その中心にマリアが大きく描かれており、その胸元に小さなイエスが抱かれているという絵なのです。それはマリアが願っていたことでしょうか。いいえ、彼女は自分が崇められるような者ではないことをよく理解していました。今日、私達が「マリアの賛歌」（マグニフィカト）と呼ぶ言葉を、マリアはこう語っています。
ルカ１章４６節－５５節46するとマリヤは言った、「わたしの魂は主をあがめ、47わたしの霊は救主なる神をたたえます。48この卑しい女をさえ、心にかけてくださいました。今からのち代々の人々は、わたしをさいわいな女と言うでしょう、49力あるかたが、わたしに大きな事をしてくださったからです。そのみ名はきよく、50そのあわれみは、代々限りなく主をかしこみ恐れる者に及びます。51主はみ腕をもって力をふるい、心の思いのおごり高ぶる者を追い散らし、52権力ある者を王座から引きおろし、卑しい者を引き上げ、53飢えている者を良いもので飽かせ、富んでいる者を空腹のまま帰らせなさいます。54主は、あわれみをお忘れにならず、その僕イスラエルを助けてくださいました、55わたしたちの父祖アブラハムとその子孫とをとこしえにあわれむと約束なさったとおりに」。
マリアは際立ったものを何も持ち合わせない、当時の結婚習慣を思います時に、まだ １０代の人生経験もほとんどない女性であったと考えられます。しかし、このマリアの素晴らしさは彼女が神の前に自分自身を本当に謙り、「この卑しい女」（４８）と言っていることであり、「そのあわれみは、世々限りなく主をかしこみ恐れる者に及びます」（５０）と言っていることです。
マリアが言わんとしていることは、何の力もない自分のような女に神の子を宿されたという全能の神を崇め、おそれるということなのです。このマリアの言葉は、聖書に一貫している、ある真理を明らかにしています。
すなわち我らの神は心の思いのおごり高ぶる者、己の力に寄りすがる者達にご自身をお表わしにならずに、真理に餓えている者、謙る者にあわれみを注いでくださるということです。神様がマリアという女性を選ばれた理由、それは彼女がこのことをよく理解している女性であったからなのでしょう。彼女の言葉は私達にどのようにして人知を超えた神に近づけばいいのかということを教えてくれるのです。
そう、それは「謙遜」です。
かつて、イエスの弟子、トマスは「復活のイエスに会わせろ。その手と腹の傷跡を見せてみろ。その傷跡に俺の指を入れさせろ。そうしたら信じる」と言いました。そう言い放った彼の心境はどんなものだったのでしょうか。彼は思っていたに違いない。
「死んでよみがえったイエスが俺の前に立つのなら、俺の理性と知性は満足する。そうしたら俺はイエスの復活を信じる」この彼の姿に神の前にあるべき「謙遜」はありません。にもかかわらず、イエス様は、復活されたその姿をこのトマスの前に表し、その願いを叶えようとされ、彼に向かって言われました。
ヨハネ２０章２７節、２９節「信じない者にならないで、信じる者になりなさい」。「あなたはわたしを見たので信じたのか。見ないで、信ずる者はさいわいである」。
私達の父なる神は私達に見えないもの、触れたことがないもの、しかし、確かに、そこに存在しているものを、私達が謙遜に信じることを願っているのです。かつてイエス・キリストはマタイ１１章２５節から２６節においてこう言われました。
マタイ１１章２５節-２６節 25その時、イエスは声をあげて言われた『天地の主なる父よ。あなたをほめたたえます。これらの事を知恵のある者や賢い者に隠して、幼な子にあらわしてくださいました。26父よ、これはまことにみ心にかなったことでした』
神のメッセージは幼な子のような心が謙った者に明らかにされることであり、それは神のみ心にかなったことだとイエス・キリストは言われたのです。まことにマリアが言った言葉は今も確実に有効なのです。
ルカ１章５０節「そのあわれみは、世々限りなく主をかしこみ恐れる者に及びます」
神様は我々の顔の上に二つの目を備えつけました。この目はいつも前を向いていますゆえに、私達は自分の後ろ姿を見ることができません。人が私達の背中をどう見ているのか、私達にはわかりません。私達には、それが見えないからです。
しかし、写真や動画がこのことを可能にしました。ある時、私は礼拝動画に映る自分の後ろ姿を見ました。それを目の当たりにした時、なぜ礼拝の最前列にお坊さんがいるのかと思いました。しかし、それはまぎれもない自分なのです。
私達は寝ている時の自分の寝相も寝顔も知りません。そんな私達が目を覚ますと、まるで全てを知っているかのような顔をして人前に立つのです。自分の後ろ姿さえも、眠っている姿さえも見えない者ですのに・・・。
「私に理解できない神などいるものか」というのではなく、私の理解などはたかが知れているのだ、神よ、私はただ、あなたに信頼しますという者を神は求めているのです。皆さんに一つの問いかけをしたいと思います。それはこういう問いかけです。

では、どうでしょうか。「神が人となる」ということは？
ここまで何度もお話ししていますが、私達が今、見ている神は全知全能の神です。そうであるならば、神が人となるということは難しいことではありません。私はそのことなら信じることができます。神とはできないことが何一つないお方ゆえに、神と呼ばれているからです。ですから、その神が私達には考えられない方法によって女の胎に宿り、そして、その胎を開いて生まれてきたということも信じることができるのです。
今日はその全てをお話することができませんが、聖書の中にはイエス・キリストの誕生というものを預言した言葉がいくつもあります。その一つ、イエス・キリストがお生まれになる７５０年も前に書かれましたイザヤ書の９章の中にイエスがお生まれになることを記した預言が書かれています。
イザヤ９章６節、７節 6ひとりのみどり子がわれわれのために生まれた、ひとりの男の子がわれわれに与えられた。まつりごとはその肩にあり、その名は「霊妙なる議士、大能の神、とこしえの父、平和の君」ととなえられる。7そのまつりごとと平和とは、増し加わって限りなく、ダビデの位に座して、その国を治め、今より後、とこしえに公平と正義とをもってこれを立て、これを保たれる。万軍の主の熱心がこれをなされるのである」。
これはキリストがベィビーとして、私達のために生まれるというイザヤの預言であり、毎年、クリスマスに開かれる言葉です。ここには、このキリストの誕生がなぜ、起きたかという理由が、その最後に書かれています。
すなわち、それは「万軍の主の熱心がこれをなされるのである」というのです。この神の熱心が神のひとり子イエスをこの地球に生まれさせたというのです。さぁ、それでは神の熱心とは何でしょうか？ヨハネ３章１６節には聖書のポイントを一文にまとめた有名な言葉があります。
ヨハネ３章１６節「神は実に、そのひとり子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。それは御子を信じる者が、ひとりとして滅びることなく、永遠の命を持つためである」（新改訳）
この言葉を見る時に、神の熱心とは何であったのかということが明確に分かります。すなわち、その神の「熱心」とはこの世界を、すなわち私達を愛された、神の「私達に対する愛」です。
この愛ゆえに、その神のひとり子、キリストは聖霊により、処女マリアのうちに宿ったのです。先に人が神と祭り上げられると、問題が起こると言いました。彼らは持ち上げられることにより、自らの欲望を制することができなくなるのです。
イエス・キリストはどうだったでしょうか。イエス様は死に至るまで神に忠実に、そして僕としての生涯を完全に全うしました。その究極的な謙遜は神が何の力も持ち合わせない赤子としてこの世界に生まれたということです。
このイエス様は十字架にかかる前夜、自分を売り渡す、自分を裏切ると分かっている弟子たちの足を洗ったのです。なぜ？彼は徹底的に自らを低くされたのでしょうか。神の私達に対する愛がその初めから終わりまで完全に明らかになるためです。
もう一度、申し上げます。私は人が神になるとは到底、思えません。しかし、全能の神が人として、この世に来られたことなら信じることができます。そう、それは神の私達に対する人知を超えた愛を私は信じることができるということです。
我は天地の創り主、全能の父なる神を信じる。
今日、帰りがけに道に咲いている花をのぞいてみてください。皆さんが家族同様に暮らしている犬や猫を眺めてください。朝夕に垣間見る、燃えるような朝焼けや夕日を見てください。
神の被造物は私達に大切なことを気づかせるのです。これら神の被造物の背後には、それを見る者、それに触れる者、それを抱きしめる者達が喜ぶ顔を意識している、願っている愛なる神の存在がうかがい知れます。
私は行ってみたい景勝地がこの世界に無数にあります。なぜなら、その自然には荘厳さがあり、美しさがあるからです。それにより慰められ、勇気づけられるからです。己が蟻のように小さい者だということに気がつかされ、そんな者を生かしめる存在を仰ぐのです。
美しさの背後に神がいる。壮大な光景の背後に神がいる。それらを見る者の心の平安と、その喜ぶ姿までも想像して、それらを創造した我らの父なる神の愛が確かに、そこにある。私にはこの被造物の背後にいる神の愛を否定することの方が、この被造物を見ていながら、神など存在しないとすることよりもはるかに難しいのです。
かつてイスラエルの民は神とモーセに逆らい、それゆえに多くの者達が毒蛇に噛まれ、命を落としました。彼らはたまりかねてモーセのところにやって来て言ったのです。
民数記２１章７節−９節 7「私たちは主とあなたを非難して罪を犯しました。どうか、蛇を私たちから取り去ってくださるよう、主に祈ってください。」モーセは民のために祈った。8 すると、主はモーセに仰せられた。「あなたは燃える蛇を作り、それを旗ざおの上につけよ。すべてかまれた者は、それを仰ぎ見れば、生きる。」9 モーセは一つの青銅の蛇を作り、それを旗ざおの上につけた。もし蛇が人をかんでも、その者が青銅の蛇を仰ぎ見ると、生きた。
彼らはモーセが旗竿の上に掲げた青銅の蛇を仰ぎ見る時に、生きたというのです。そして、明らかにこのことを念頭に置いて、それから１５００年後にイエス・キリストは言いました。
ヨハネ３章１４節−１５節14「モーセが荒野で蛇を上げたように、人の子もまた上げられなければなりません。15それは、信じる者がみな、人の子にあって永遠のいのちを持つためです」。
主にある皆さん、今日、このことを心に刻みお帰りください。誰でも私たちの主イエス・キリストを信じて、彼を仰ぎ見る者は救われます。
かつてイスラエル二代目の王であったダビデが窮地に置かれ、敵の前に立った時、彼は自ら狂ったさまを装い、その難を逃れたことがありました。その時、彼が何をしたのか。ダビデは詩篇３４篇にそのことを書き残しました。
詩篇３４篇５節 主を仰ぎ見て、光を得よ、そうすれば、あなたがたは、恥じて顔を赤くすることはない。
どうして、自分の周りを見て、肩を落とすのか。自分の手の中にある者を見て、諦めるのか。自分の心にある苦々しい思いを見て、失望するのか。
なぜ分からないと言って、不信仰に陥るのか・・・。主を仰ぎ見て光を得よ。それを仰ぎ見れば、あなたは生きる。
私は母に感謝しています。母は私に「信」という名前をつけました。漢字で信、信じると書きます。私は不信仰な者です。しかし、自分の名前を書く度に、私は「信じる」と書いています。
長男が与えられた時、その名を仰（こう）としました。半人前の私達を合わせて「信仰」です。信仰とは信じて、仰ぐことです。そうです、みなさん、神様は私達に天を仰ぐことを望まれている。神を信じて天を仰ぐのです。
ですから皆さん、飼葉桶に寝かされているイエスを小さな頭の中に無理やり押し込めようとはせず、神のあなたに対する熱愛を仰ぎ見てください。聖書ははっきりと書いています。
１ヨハネ５章５節 世に勝つ者はだれか。イエスを神の子と信じる者ではないか。
世に勝つ者は誰か。イエスを神の子と信じる者である。ここにはイエスを神の子と理解する者であるとは書かれていません。
聖書は最初からあなたの理解を求めず、あなたが神を信じて、仰ぐことにより救われることを求めているのです。ですから、使徒信条は信条なのであり、その末尾には「信じる」という言葉があるのです。私達は毎週、この神を信じると神の前に、全世界に向けて宣言しているのです。この一週間、私たちは覚えましょう。
神は私達を愛するがあまり、その熱意もって、処女マリアにイエス・キリストの命を植えつけられたということを。神は私達にイエス・キリストという最高のお方をお与えくださいました。そう、私達は神に愛されている。その愛を信じ、神を仰ぎ、その愛の内に日々を過ごしましょう。
そして、その愛に応えて生きましょう！それが、神が人に求める人生なのです！私は、イエス・キリストが聖霊によってやどり、処女マリアより生まれたということを信じ、あなたを仰ぎます。ここから私達の生きる世界が変わります。私達の見ている景色が変わります。あなたに与えられている新しい歩みはここから始まるのです。
お祈りしましょう。
Virgin Birth: Look Up to Jesus and Receive Light!

We recited the Apostles’ Creed again this morning. In it, there is this sentence.
“Who (Jesus Christ) was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary,”
If you really think about it, we are reciting something amazing. In other words, we are saying this. “I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was born without relations between a man and a woman, by the Holy Spirit, of the virgin Mary.” Some people listening to these words nearby may be surprised and think “What in the world is this person talking about!” However, today, about one-third of the people in the world make this their confession of faith. The Bible is a thick book, but if you open it to the first page, the very first thing it says is:
Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
There is no preamble to this simple statement, such as “You may not understand what I am about to write, but . . .”. These words are clearly, naturally, and boldly stated. Thus, these words are short, yet very impactful.
In 1843, a man named Jo Niijima was born in Japan. It is fresh in our minds that a few years ago, NHK (Japan Broadcast Company) made his wife, Yae Niijima, into an epic drama called “Yae no Sakura” (Yae’s Sakura).
Jo Niijima was deeply moved by the words in Genesis, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. This is because the gods he had known until then had been created by human beings themselves to fulfill their own wishes.
Such gods were placed in boxes or in shrines. These gods were dusted off by human hands and, if necessary, moved to another location by human hands. And over time, they were gods in need of repair by human hands.
In the past and now, many people pass by the Words of the Bible, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).However, facing these big words that were on a scale he had never heard before, Niijima was shocked as if struck by lightning. Thereafter, he studied in the United States for 10 years, and returned to Japan with a vision to build a Christian-based school. His vision was realized, and the university he founded is now, the Doshisha University in Kyoto. The beginning of Doshisha University was the prayer and vision of one man who decided his way of life based on the sentence, “In the beginning God created the heavens and earth”. In regard to the creation of the heavens and the earth, Genesis 1:2, which follows these words, states this:
Genesis 1:1 “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
This was the state of this world before God created the heavens and the earth. At that time, the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. These words tell us that the world at that time was in a state of chaos, as if there were still no order to it. This is from where God began His creative work.
And what I want to focus on this morning is that the “Spirit of God” was already present at the very site of the creation. That is, this Spirit of God was involved in the creation of something out of nothing. The English Bible describes what was going on at that time as the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
It is like a bird flapping its wings over the water. It is a scene in which a new creation is being initiated by the winds of the flapping wings of the Spirit of God.
We recited today, “Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit”.
In a world of chaos and emptiness, the Spirit of God, who was involved in the creative work of the heavens and the earth, implanted life in the womb of a virgin. Is it impossible for the Spirit of God that was involved in the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the pre-created world, to give life in the womb of a virgin?
As I told you two weeks ago, what we think is impossible is not impossible, it is just that our understanding cannot grasp it. If all the events described in the Bible are only common sense things that we can understand, then it means that the Bible is not a book “about God”. What is written there concerns “God Almighty”.
The Bible clearly gives the name of the woman, who conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit, as being Mary. We imagine many things about the woman who gave birth to the Son of God, and what kind of life she led with such a destiny.
Mary would have been looked at strangely by people for the rest of her life. Many people would have thought her crazy for claiming to have “conceived a child by the Holy Spirit”.
There must have been some gossip going around as to which man, other than her forgiving husband Joseph, had relations with her.
But then hundreds of years after her death, there were those who set her up as a god-like being and as the holy mother. What we often see in medieval paintings is a large depiction of Mary at the center, with a small Jesus held close to her bosom. Is that what Mary had hoped for? No, she was well aware that she was not one to be revered.
Today, in what we call the “Song of Mary” (Magnificat), Mary says the following:
Luke 1:46-55 46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is His name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and His descendants forever, just as He promised our ancestors.”
Mary was a woman of no distinction, and when considering the marriage customs of the time, she was still a teenager with little life experience. But the beauty of Mary is that she truly humbles herself before God, saying, “humble state of His servant” (vs.48),and that “His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation” (vs.50).
What Mary is trying to say is that she worships and fears the Almighty God who conceived the Son of God in a helpless woman like herself. These words of Mary reveal a truth that is consistent throughout the Bible. In other words, our God does not reveal Himself to those whose hearts are puffed up and who lean on their own strength, but He pours out His mercy on those who are hungry for the truth and who humble themselves.
God probably chose Mary because she was a woman who understood this very well.Her words teach us how to approach God, who is beyond human knowledge.
Yes, it is “humility”.
Thomas, a disciple of Jesus, once said, “Let me see the risen Jesus. Show me the scars on His hands and on His side. Let me put my fingers in those scars. Then I will believe. ”What was in his mind when he said that? He must have been thinking.
“My reason and intellect will be satisfied if Jesus, who died and rose from the dead, stands before me. Then I will believe in the resurrection of Jesus.” There is no “humility” that should exist before God in what we see of him. In spite of this, Jesus, in His resurrected state, appeared before this Thomas to fulfill his request, and said to him,
John 20:27, 29. “Stop doubting and believe.” “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Our Father God wants us to humbly believe in what we cannot see, what we have never touched, but which, surely, is there. Jesus Christ once said in Matthew 11:25-26,
Matthew 11:25-26 25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.”
The message of God, Jesus Christ said, is to be revealed to those whose hearts are humble like little children, and that is what God wills. Truly, the words that Mary said are certainly still valid today.
Luke 1:50. “His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.”
God has placed two eyes on our faces. Because these eyes are always looking forward, we cannot see behind us. We do not know how people view our backs. This is because we cannot see it.
However, photos and videos have made this possible. One time, I saw my back in a worship video. When I witnessed it, I wondered why there was a monk in the front row of the worship service. But it is unmistakably me.
We do not know our own sleeping patterns or what kind of face we have while we are asleep. When we wake up, we stand in front of people looking as if we know everything.
Although we cannot even see our own back, or even the manner in which we sleep . . .
God is not seeking those who say, “There is no God that I cannot understand,” but rather those who say, “My understanding is limited, God, but I just trust in You”. I would like to ask you a question. It is this question.
Which can you believe: “a person becoming God” or “God becoming a person”?
There are many religions in the world, and many of them state that “people become a god”. Some charismatic leader calls themself a god, or is set up by those around them as such. There are many such religions in the world. However, in many cases, that self-proclaimed deity is disqualified by a scandal. It is a financial problem, an ethical problem.
Why does a self-proclaimed god cause a scandal? It is because that person is not God, they are human beings just like us.
The Chinese Art of War is said to have the following strategy. It is a “strategy to make the enemy general arrogant,” and it is said to be very effective. It is a strategy that when the general becomes arrogant, he loses sight of himself, which negatively affects the outcome of the war and he eventually loses. If a person is exalted with the words, “You are surely a god,” they will not be able to suppress the ego of their heart. And that person will surely die at the end, and return to the earth like all human beings.
On a personal note, I absolutely do not believe that “a person becomes God”. I believe in an afterlife, but I will not die and become a god. I rarely use the word “absolutely,” but I can say this with certainty.
A person cannot become God. Nor can one die and become a god. Absolutely not.I am a person who makes all kinds of mistakes and misunderstandings on a daily basis. Just a little more ice cream on my children’s plates than on mine makes my heart fret. Such a person should not be called God. A person who makes a big fuss over a difficult to see small thorn stuck in his little finger, and who becomes unable to see the letters he used to read, can never become a god.
So what do you think? What about “God becoming a person?”
As I have told you many times up to this point, the God we are looking at now is an all knowing and almighty God .If that is so, then it is not difficult for God to become a person. Then I can believe in that. God is called God because there is nothing He cannot do.
Therefore, we can also believe that God entered a woman’s womb in a way that we cannot conceive, and then opened that womb to be born.
I cannot talk about all of them today, but there are a number of words in the Bible that prophesy the birth of Jesus Christ. One such prophecy, written 750 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, is found in Isaiah 9, which describes the birth of Jesus.
Isaiah 9:6, 7 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over His kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
This is Isaiah’s prophecy that the Christ will be born for us as a baby, which are words read every Christmas. Here, at the end of it all, is the reason why this birth of Christ happened. In other words, it is that “the zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this”.
This zeal of God is what brought about God’s only begotten Son, Jesus, to be born on this earth. So, what is the zeal of God? John 3:16 contains a famous phrase that sums up the point of the Bible in one sentence.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
When we look at these words, we see clearly what God’s zeal was. In other words, God’s “zeal” is God’s love for this world, that He loved us, it is God’s “love for us”.
Because of this love, Christ, the only begotten Son of God, was conceived in the virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit. Earlier I said that when people are exalted as gods, problems arise. They are lifted up and are unable to control their own desires.
What about Jesus Christ? Jesus was faithful to God even unto death, and He lived His entire life as a servant to the fullest. The ultimate humility is that God was born into this world as a baby with no power.
This Jesus, on the eve of His crucifixion, washed the feet of His disciples whom He knew would abandon and betray Him. Why did He thoroughly lower Himself? It was so that God’s love for us is fully revealed from its beginning to its end.
I will say it again. I do not believe that a person can ever become God. However, I can believe that Almighty God came to this world as a person. Yes, it means that I can believe in God’s love for us that transcends human knowledge.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Take a peek at the flowers along the sides of the road on your way home today. Look at the dogs and cats that you all live with like family members. See glimpses of the fiery morning sunrises and evening sunsets.
God’s creation reminds us of what is important to us. Behind these creations of God, we can see the presence of a loving God who is aware of and wishes to see the faces of those who see them, touch them, and embrace them with joy.
There are countless scenic spots in this world that I would like to visit. This is because there is majesty and beauty in that nature. For we are comforted and encouraged by it. We are made aware that we are as small as an ant, and we look up to the One who makes us alive.
God is behind the beauty. God is behind the grandeur of the spectacle. The love of our Father God who created these things, imagining the peace of mind and the joy of those who see them, is certainly there. It is much more difficult for me to deny the love of God behind this creation than it is to look at this creation and say there is no such thing as God.
In the past, the Israelites disobeyed God and Moses, and thus many were bitten by poisonous snakes and lost their lives. They were so frustrated that they came to Moses and said.
Numbers 21:7-9 7 “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.
It says that they lived when they looked up at the bronze snake that Moses held up on a pole. And obviously with this in mind, 1500 years later Jesus Christ said.
John 3:14-15 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
People in the Lord, please take this to heart today as you go home. Whoever believes in our Lord Jesus Christ and looks up to Him will be saved.
Once, when David, the second king of Israel, was in a difficult situation and stood before his enemies, he escaped by feigning madness. What did he do at that time? David wrote about it in Psalm 34.
Psalm 34:5 Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.
Why do you look around you and shrug your shoulders? Do you look at what is in your hands and give up? Are you disappointed when you see the bitter thoughts in your own heart?
Why do you say you don’t understand and fall into disbelief . . .? Look up to Him and you will live.
I am grateful to my mother. My mother gave me the name “Makoto”. In Kanji it is written, “信”, which means to believe. I am a person who lacks faith. However, every time I write my name, I write “I believe”.
When my first son was given to us by God, he was named “仰” (Koh), that is to “look up”.
Two incomplete people brought together is “信仰” (“faith”). Faith is believing and looking up. Yes, everyone, God wants us to look up to heaven. You are to believe in God and look up to heaven.
So, everyone, don’t try to force Jesus, who is lying in a manger, into your small heads, but look up to God’s passionate love for you. The Bible clearly states.
1 John 5:5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
Who overcomes the world? Those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Here it does not say it is those who understand that Jesus is the Son of God.
The Bible does not ask for your understanding from the beginning, but for you to believe in God and be saved by looking up to Him. Therefore, the Apostles’ Creed is a faith statement, and the word “believe” is found throughout it. Every week, we declare before God and to the whole world that we believe in this God. During this week, let us remember.
That God loves us so much that in His zeal He planted the life of Jesus Christ in the virgin Mary. God has given us Jesus Christ who is the best Person. Yes, we are loved by God. Let us believe in that love, look up to God, and live our days in that love.
And let us live in response to that love! That is the life God wants for people! I believe that Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of the Virgin Mary, and I will look up to You. The world we live in will change from here. The view we see will change. The new walk you have been given begins here.
