Yes, today is our Thanksgiving Sunday Worship Service. そう、今日はサンクスギビング・サンデー礼拝です。
Thanksgiving Day is this coming Thursday, and we will have a Thanksgiving Eve Service on Wednesday. サンクスギビングデーは来たる木曜日で、水曜日にはサンクスギビング・イブ礼拝があります。
However, today, the Sunday before Thanksgiving Day, is our Thanksgiving Sunday Worship Service. そして、サンクスギビング・デー前の日曜日である今日は、サンクスギビング・サンデー礼拝です。
And today, we have truly three reasons to be thankful for. そして今日、私達には本当に感謝すべき３つの理由があります。
We are thankful for Keiko Woodworth, Matthew Stokes, and Philip Honda, who will be receiving baptism this morning. 私達は恵子・ウッドワースさん、マシュー・ストークスさん、フィリップ・本多さんが今朝、洗礼を受けることを感謝します。
So, as we give thanks to God for these three children of God who will be professing their faith in Jesus Christ publicly through baptism, そこで、洗礼によってイエス・キリストへの信仰を公言する三人の神の子達に対して神に感謝を捧げるにあたり、
I wanted to talk about the reason as children of God, to rejoice, pray, and give thanks. 神の子として喜び、祈り、感謝する理由についてお話ししたいと思います。
When you think about these three particular things, rejoice, pray, and give thanks, I am sure many of you think of a particular set of Bible verses. この「喜び、祈り、感謝する」という３つのことを考える時、多くの人はある聖書の箇所を思い浮かべるのではないでしょうか。
Yes, it is 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 where it says: そう、第1テサロニケ５章１６節−１８節です：
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18（テサロニケ人への手紙・第一５章１６節—１８節） 16 Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 16いつも喜んでいなさい。17絶えず祈りなさい。18すべての事について、感謝しなさい。これが、キリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに求めておられることである。
Because you will be hearing three testimonies of salvation this morning as part of this morning’s baptism ceremony, I would like to keep this message short. 今朝の洗礼式では３つの救いの証しを聞くことになるので、このメッセージは短くしたいと思います。
So, for each of these three things, I would like to give one reason each for continuing to rejoice in the Lord, pray, and give thanks to God. そこで、この３つそれぞれについて、主を喜び、祈り、神に感謝し続ける理由を1つずつ述べたいと思います。
Rejoice Alwaysいつも喜んでいなさい
Let me read from the Gospel of Luke of an interaction between Jesus and His disciples.
Luke 10:17-20（ルカの福音書１０章１７節—２０節） 17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.” 17七十二人が喜んで帰ってきて言った、「主よ、あなたの名によっていたしますと、悪霊までがわたしたちに服従します」。18彼らに言われた、「わたしはサタンが電光のように天から落ちるのを見た。19わたしはあなたがたに、へびやさそりを踏みつけ、敵のあらゆる力に打ち勝つ権威を授けた。だから、あなたがたに害をおよぼす者はまったく無いであろう。20しかし、霊があなたがたに服従することを喜ぶな。むしろ、あなたがたの名が天にしるされていることを喜びなさい」。
Here, the disciples just returned from where they were sent out by Jesus in pairs to prepare for His going to those cities and places. ここで弟子達は、イエス様がこれらの町々や色々な場所に行く準備をするために、イエス様によって二人一組で派遣された所から戻ってきました。
Jesus had given specific instructions on what they were to carry, how they were to interact with the people they met, イエス様は、彼らが携えていくもの、出会う人々とどのように接するべきかについて具体的な指示を与え、
and gave them the authority to heal the sick and proclaim the Good News of the kingdom of God. 彼らに病人をいやし、神の国の福音を宣べ伝える権威を与えられました。
Thus, they came back amazed and were rejoicing in the fact that even the demons were subject to them in Jesus’ name. こうして、彼らは驚きと共に帰ってきて、イエス様の御名によって悪霊さえも従わせることができたことを喜びました。
They were rejoicing in the amazing things that they were able to do in Jesus’ name! 彼らは、イエス様の御名によって驚くべきことができたことを喜んでいたのです！
But listen to what Jesus said to them: しかし、イエス様が彼らに言われたことに耳を傾けてください：
Luke 10:20 “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”「しかし、霊があなたがたに服従することを喜ぶな。むしろ、あなたがたの名が天にしるされていることを喜びなさい」。
In essence, Jesus said that what they should rejoice in is the fact that they have an eternal relationship with God who is Almighty, 要するにイエス様は、彼らが喜ぶべきことは、全能者である神様との永遠の関係があるという事実であり、
and therefore they have a place reserved for them in heaven. それゆえ、天国には彼らのために用意された場所があるということだ、と言われたのです。
Are you content with your current address, that is the place that you are living? あなたは自分の現在の住所、つまり住んでいる場所に満足しているでしょうか？
Sometimes you have to fill out some forms, and they will ask to write down your current or mailing address, and maybe also your permanent address. 時々、皆さんは書類に記入する必要があり、現住所や郵送先住所、もしかしたら本籍地を書くよう求められることがあるかもしれません。
I don’t know if you are happy with where you are living right now, but as Christians, our permanent or more specifically our eternal address is heaven! あなたが今住んでいるところに満足しているかどうかはわかりませんが、クリスチャンとして、私達の恒久的な、より具体的には永遠の住所は天国です！
Now, that should give you reason to rejoice! これは喜ぶべきことです！
For Keiko-san, Matthew and Philip, and to all who profess faith in Jesus Christ, let us remember this reason for rejoicing in the Lord. 恵子さん、マタイ、フィリップ、そしてイエス・キリストへの信仰を公言する全ての人のために、主にあって喜ぶ、この理由を思い起こしましょう。
Pray Without Ceasing絶えず祈りなさい
Let me read from the Gospel of Matthew of Jesus’ instructions to His disciples on how to pray. マタイによる福音書から、イエス様の弟子達に対する祈り方の教えを読んでみましょう。
Matthew 6:9-13（マタイの福音書６章９節—１３節） 9 “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread. 12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’] 9だから、あなたがたはこう祈りなさい、天にいますわれらの父よ、御名があがめられますように。10御国がきますように。みこころが天に行われるとおり、地にも行われますように。11わたしたちの日ごとの食物を、きょうもお与えください。12わたしたちに負債のある者をゆるしましたように、わたしたちの負債をもおゆるしください。13わたしたちを試みに会わせないで、悪しき者からお救いください。
Here, we are reminded by Jesus of the blessing that we have in being able to pray to God anytime, anywhere, and anything. ここで私達は、いつでも、どこでも、何でも神様に祈ることができるという祝福について、イエス様から思い起こさせられます。
This is because of our relationship with God as our Heavenly Father. このことは私達の天の父である神様との関係のおかげです。
If heaven is our permanent and eternal home, and that is where our Heavenly Father is, then prayer is like calling “home” from elsewhere to talk to your dad or mom. 天国が私達の永久の永遠の家であり、そこに天の御父がおられるとすれば、祈りは、お父さんやお母さんと話すために他の場所から「家」に電話をかけるようなものです。
Just like your dad and mom is concerned for your wellbeing and loves to hear from you and hear your voice, the Heavenly Father is concerned for our wellbeing and loves to hear our voice. お父さんやお母さんがあなたの幸いを心配し、あなたからの連絡やあなたの声を聞くことを愛しているように、天の父も私達の幸いを心配し、私達の声を聞くことを愛しておられるのです。
Through Jesus Christ, we have 24/7 access to God our Father, and therefore we can pray to Him at all times without ceasing. イエス・キリストを通して、私達は２４時間、一週間、いつでも父なる神様に近づくことができます。
Such prayers do not have to be spoken out loud. It can be in our thoughts and desires as we lift them up to our Heavenly Father. そのような祈りは口に出して言う必要はありません。 天の父に捧げる私達の思いと願いの中にあるのです。
For Keiko-san, Matthew and Philip, and to all who profess faith in Jesus Christ, let us remember this reason for praying to God without ceasing. 恵子さん、マタイ、フィリップ、そしてイエス・キリストへの信仰を公言する全ての人のために、絶えることなく神に祈るこの理由を思い起こしましょう。
In Everything Give Thanksすべての事について、感謝しなさい
Listen to what the apostle Paul says in the letters he wrote to the Christians in Rome and Corinth. 使徒パウロがローマとコリントのクリスチャンに宛てた手紙の中で述べていることに耳を傾けましょう。
Romans 7:18-8:2 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 21 I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. 1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
18 わたしの内に、すなわち、わたしの肉の内には、善なるものが宿っていないことを、わたしは知っている。なぜなら、善をしようとする意志は、自分にあるが、それをする力がないからである。19 すなわち、わたしの欲している善はしないで、欲していない悪は、これを行っている。20 もし、欲しないことをしているとすれば、それをしているのは、もはやわたしではなく、わたしの内に宿っている罪である。21 そこで、善をしようと欲しているわたしに、悪がはいり込んでいるという法則があるのを見る。22 すなわち、わたしは、内なる人としては神の律法を喜んでいるが、23 わたしの肢体には別の律法があって、わたしの心の法則に対して戦いをいどみ、そして、肢体に存在する罪の法則の中に、わたしをとりこにしているのを見る。24 わたしは、なんというみじめな人間なのだろう。だれが、この死のからだから、わたしを救ってくれるだろうか。25 わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって、神は感謝すべきかな。このようにして、わたし自身は、心では神の律法に仕えているが、肉では罪の律法に仕えているのである。1 こういうわけで、今やキリスト・イエスにある者は罪に定められることがない。2 なぜなら、キリスト・イエスにあるいのちの御霊の法則は、罪と死との法則からあなたを解放したからである。
1 Corinthians 15:56-57 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 56 死のとげは罪である。罪の力は律法である。57 しかし感謝すべきことには、神はわたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって、わたしたちに勝利を賜わったのである。
Sin and death are real big issues in our lives. 罪と死は、私達の人生において、本当に大きな問題です。
But we are reminded here, that Jesus is mightier and greater than sin and death, and therefore gives us victory over sin and death! しかし、私達はここで、イエス様は罪と死よりも強くて偉大なお方であり、それゆえに私達に罪と死に対する勝利を与えてくださることを思い起こします！
You know, I was really disappointed when the Padres lost to the Dodgers in the playoffs. パドレスがプレーオフでドジャースに負けた時、私は本当にがっかりしました。
Actually, I was more than disappointed. I was devastated. I was depressed. 実際、失望以上でした。 打ちのめされました。 落ち込みました。
You may laugh at me. But that is how much I really wanted and expected the Padres to beat the Dodgers. 笑われるかもしれない。しかし、それだけパドレスがドジャースに勝つことを望んでいたし、期待していたのです。
Most everything in this life involves competition. この世のほとんどのことには競争が伴います。
Academically we compete against others in our school and in our classes. 学業においては、私達は学校やクラスで人と競い合います。
In sports we compete to win the race, or game, or meet, or tournament. スポーツでは、レースや試合、大会、トーナメントに勝つために競争します。
At work we compete against other employees to keep our job or get a promotion. 仕事では、仕事を続けるため、あるいは昇進するために他の従業員と競争します。
Yet, in all of these things, we are made fully aware that you lose some and win some. しかし、これらのこと全てにおいて、私達は「負けることもあれば、勝つこともある」ということを十分に認識させられています。
Here is the great news for us who are in Christ Jesus: ここにキリスト・イエスにある私達にとって、素晴らしい知らせがあります：
We are victorious through Jesus Christ! We are winners . . . period! 私達はイエス・キリストによって勝利します！ 私達は勝者なのです！
We know that the bumper sticker that says, “He (or she) who dies with the most toys wins” is a lie. 私達は「おもちゃをたくさん持って死んだ者が勝つ」というバンパー・ステッカーが嘘であることを知っています。
We know this because no one can take all those so-called toys with them when they die. というのも、いわゆるオモチャをすべて持って死ぬことはできないからです。
And there it is, the real truth: We all die because of sin! 本当の真実がここにあります： 私達は皆、罪のゆえに死にます！
But in Christ, we are given eternal life together with God in heaven! しかし、キリストにあって、私達は天国で神様と共に永遠の命を与えられるのです！
God gives us the victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ! 神様は私た達の主イエス・キリストを通して、罪と死に対する勝利を与えてくださるのです！
And through baptism, we are visually reminded of Jesus’ dying for our sins as one goes down into the water, and of Jesus’ resurrection (victory over death and sin) as one comes up from the water. そして、バプテスマを通して、私達は、水の中に入る時にイエス様が私たちの罪のために死んでくださったことを、水から上がるときにイエスが復活（死と罪に対する勝利）してくださったことを、視覚的に思い起こすのです。
Indeed, for this, we can continually give thanks to God! 実にことのことゆえに、私達は神様に絶えず感謝を捧げることができるのです！
Do we need any other reasons to rejoice, pray, and give thanks, as God’s children? 神の子として喜び、祈り、感謝する理由が他にあるでしょうか？
Actually, there a lot more reasons, but I believe these are enough for us to carry out God’s will for us in Christ Jesus. 実は、もっとたくさんの理由があるのですが、キリスト・イエスにある私達に対する神の御心を実行するためには、これらで十分だと私は信じています。

So, let us who are in Christ Jesus, continually rejoice in the fact that we are made citizens of heaven, pray with unceasing joy because of our relationship with God as our Heavenly Father, ですから、キリスト・イエスにある私達は天国の市民とされたことを絶えず喜び、天の父である神との関係のゆえに絶えることのない喜びをもって祈り、
and give thanks for the sure victory that we have no matter what we may face in our time here on earth (in everything). この地上での時間にどんなことに直面しようとも（その全てにおいて）、私達には確かな勝利があることを感謝しましょう。
And let us celebrate these things together with Keiko-san, Matthew and Philip, this morning, そして、今朝、恵子さん、マシュー、フィリプが洗礼を通して、
