今回のメッセージでは、預言者エリヤを見てみます。エリヤは聖書の中で非常に興味深く、重要な人物であり、彼の預言者としての働きには、畏敬の念を抱かせる瞬間がたくさんありました。同時に、彼の人生の中では、神の慰めと平安の中に安らう必要の時がありました。エリヤの人生のこの側面が強調されます。なぜなら、私達が神様の慰めと平安の中で休むことができ、また休む必要があるという事実を理解することが重要だからです。

また、今月はメンタルヘルス啓発月間でもあるため、精神疾患を経験したり、それと共に生活している全ての人達に、このことが助けになります。メンタルヘルスの状態は、誰にでも、クリスチャンや、私達が霊的に強いと思っている人達にさえも影響を及ぼす可能性があります。エリヤにはひどく落ち込んだ時期がありましたので、神の慰めと平安を受ける方法について、彼の経験から学ぶことができます（本多）。

Elijah: Resting in God’s Comfort and Peace
エリヤ：神の慰めと平安の中に安らう

The last few Sundays, we have been in celebration mode.　 過去何回かの日曜日、私達はお祝いモードでした。On Palm Sunday, we had Pastor Sho Ichikawa give the message, and after the worship service, we had our Easter Picnic and Egg Hunt.　 パームサンデーには市川祥牧師にメッセージをしていただき、礼拝後にはイースターピクニックとエッグハントを行いました。On Resurrection Sunday, we truly focused on the importance of Jesus’ resurrection.　 復活の日曜日には、イエス様の復活の重要性に焦点を当てました。Last Sunday, we celebrated our Conference’s Founders Day, and had Bryce Yokomizo as our guest speaker.　 先週の日曜日には、教団創立記念を祝い、ブライスヨコミゾ氏をゲストスピーカーとしてお迎えしました。

Today, we will get back to our message series on “Learning from People, How to Live with God”.　 今日からは「人から学び、神と共に生きる人生」というメッセージ・シリーズに戻ります。Today, we will look at the prophet Elijah.　 そこで、今日は預言者エリヤを見てみましょう。

Elijah is a very interesting and important person in the Bible.　エリヤは聖書の中で非常に興味深く、重要な人物です。Of course, as a prophet, he needed to completely trust and obey God in proclaiming God’s message to the people.　 もちろん、預言者である彼は、神のメッセージを人々に宣べ伝えるにあたり、完全に神様を信頼し、神様に従う必要がありました。

This would not be very hard if he was speaking to people who were his friends and liked him.　 彼の友人であり、彼に好意を抱いている人々に語りかけるのであれば、これはそれほど難しいことではないでしょう。

However, it is not so easy to speak the word of God to people who consider you an enemy and who dislike you.　 しかし、自分を敵視し、嫌っている人々に神の言葉を語るのは、そう簡単なことではありません。In fact, Elijah, as well as most of God’s prophets in the Bible, 実際、エリヤだけでなく、聖書に登場するほとんどの神の預言者たちは、had to speak God’s words to people who had closed ears and hearts to what God had to say to them.　神の言葉に耳と心を閉ざした人々に神様の言葉を語らなければなりませんでした。

However, most of God’s prophets tended to serve the kings of Judah (the southern kingdom, しかし、神の預言者の多くはユダ（南王国）の王達に仕える傾向がありましたが、but Elijah was sent to serve/speak to the kings of Israel (the northern kingdom).　エリヤはイスラエル（北王国）の王達に仕え、語るために遣わされたのです。The kings of Israel tended to be less God-fearing than the kings of Judah. イスラエルの王達は、ユダの王達よりも神を敬わない傾向がありました。

Thus, Elijah truly had to rest in God’s comfort and peace in order to faithfully proclaim God’s words to the hard-hearted kings of Israel. したがって、エリヤはイスラエルの心無い王たちに神の言葉を忠実に宣べ伝えるために、神の慰めと平安のうちに本当に休まなければなりませんでした。So, God sent Elijah to proclaim His words of challenge to Israel during the reigns of Ahab and his son Ahaziah. そこで神様は、アハブとその息子アハジヤの治世の間、イスラエルへの挑戦の言葉を宣べ伝えるためにエリヤを遣わされました。During Elijah’s prophetic ministry, he had a lot of awe-inspiring moments. エリヤの預言者としての働きには、畏敬の念を抱かせる瞬間がたくさんありました。From the start of Elijah’s ministry as a prophet, we see that Elijah had to deliver a not so pleasant message to Ahab. 預言者としてのエリヤの働きの初めから、エリヤはアハブにあまり嬉しくないメッセージを伝えなければならなかったことが分かります。

1 Kings 17:1（列王記上１７章１節）

Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” ギレアデのテシベに住むテシベびとエリヤはアハブに言った、「わたしの仕えているイスラエルの神、主は生きておられます。わたしの言葉のないうちは、数年雨も露もないでしょう」。

Here in this verse, we are given some information regarding Elijah. この節では、エリヤに関するいくつかの情報が与えられています。Actually, little is known of his family background. 実は、エリヤの家庭環境についてはほとんど知られていません。However, we know that he was a Tishbite, which indicated his association with a place named Tishbe, east of the Jordan River. しかし、彼がテシべ人であり、ヨルダン川の東にあるテシベという地名と関係があったことは分かっています。He was also from Gilead. 彼はまたギレアデの出身でもありました。

We know from another passage of Scripture, that Elijah “was a hairy man with a leather girdle bound about his loins” (2 Kings 1:8)  私達は別の聖書箇所から、エリヤは「毛ごろもを着て、腰に皮の帯を締めて」いたことが分かります（列王記下１章８節）。Thus, in the New Testament, he is often associated with John the Baptist, こうして新約聖書において、彼はしばしばバプテスマのヨハネと結びつけられますが、not just because of their prophetic role at the key moment in history in which they served God, but also in their simple attire.それは彼らが神に仕えた歴史上の重要な瞬間に預言者的役割を果たしたからというだけでなく、その簡素な服装も同様なのです。

We also see in 1 Kings 17:1, that Elijah made it very clear that he is God’s　representative, for he was standing before the God of Israel, as he speaks. また、列王記上１７章１節にはエリヤがイスラエルの神様の前に立って語っていることから、自分が神の代理人であることをはっきりと示しています。This means that God is literally backing him up. これは、文字通り神様が彼をバックアップしていることを意味します。Elijah proceeded by saying, “surely there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” エリヤは続けてこう言いました。「わたしの言葉のないうちは、数年雨も露もないでしょう」。

Talk about authority!  He is saying that as God’s representative, he has been given the words and authority to proclaim a drought upon the land of Israel.権威について話す！神の代理人として、イスラエルの地に干ばつを宣言する言葉と権威が与えられていると彼は言っているのです。Of course, since drought was associated with God’s judgment, Elijah was proclaiming God’s judgment upon Ahab and Israel. もちろん、干ばつは神の裁きと関連していたので、エリヤはアハブとイスラエルに対する神の裁きを宣言していました。This drought lasted for three and a half years. この干ばつは３年半続きました。

Another awe-inspiring moment in Elijah’s life was when he had a showdown with the prophets of Baal. エリヤの人生におけるもう一つの畏敬の念を抱かせる瞬間は、バアルの預言者たちとの対決の時でした。More than three years after the time that Elijah had first spoken with king Ahab, God said the following to Elijah: エリヤがアハブ王と初めて話をしてから３年以上経って、神様はエリヤに次のように言われました：

1 Kings 18:1（列王記上１８章１節）

“Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the face of the earth.”「行って、あなたの身をアハブに示しなさい。わたしは雨を地に降らせる」。

So, Elijah went to meet with Ahab. そこでエリヤはアハブに会いに行きました。This leads to a spiritual battle on Mount Carmel that was to prove that God is the one and only true God. これがカルメル山での霊的な戦いにつながり、神様が唯一にして真の神であることを証明することになったのです。

1 Kings 18:17-24（列王記上１８章１７節—２４節）

¹⁷ When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is this you, you troubler of Israel?” ¹⁸ He said, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, because you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and you have followed the Baals. ¹⁹ Now then send and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” ²⁰ So Ahab sent a message among all the sons of Israel and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel. ²¹ Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word. ²² Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men. ²³ Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire under it. ²⁴ Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people said, “That is a good idea.” ¹⁷アハブはエリヤを見たとき、彼に言った、「イスラエルを悩ます者よ、あなたはここにいるのですか」。¹⁸彼は答えた、「わたしがイスラエルを悩ますのではありません。あなたと、あなたの父の家が悩ましたのです。あなたがたが主の命令を捨て、バアルに従ったためです。¹⁹それで今、人をつかわしてイスラエルのすべての人およびバアルの預言者四百五十人、ならびにアシラの預言者四百人、イゼベルの食卓で食事する者たちをカルメル山に集めて、わたしの所にこさせなさい」。²⁰そこでアハブはイスラエルのすべての人に人をつかわして、預言者たちをカルメル山に集めた。 ²¹そのときエリヤはすべての民に近づいて言った、「あなたがたはいつまで二つのものの間に迷っているのですか。主が神ならばそれに従いなさい。しかしバアルが神ならば、それに従いなさい」。民はひと言も彼に答えなかった。²²エリヤは民に言った、「わたしはただひとり残った主の預言者です。しかしバアルの預言者は四百五十人あります。²³われわれに二頭の牛をください。そして一頭の牛を彼らに選ばせ、それを切り裂いて、たきぎの上に載せ、それに火をつけずにおかせなさい。わたしも一頭の牛を整え、それをたきぎの上に載せて火をつけずにおきましょう。²⁴こうしてあなたがたはあなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。わたしは主の名を呼びましょう。そして火をもって答える神を神としましょう」。民は皆答えて「それがよかろう」と言った。

Here, we see the clear explanation for God’s judgment, that is the reason for which God withheld rain from falling on the land. ここには、神様の裁き、すなわち神様が雨を降らせなかった理由についての明確な説明があります。The people of Israel had forsaken God’s commandments and followed after the idol god Baal. イスラエルの民は神の戒めを捨て、偶像の神バアルに従っていました。

The apathy of the people towards God is seen in their silent response to Elijah’s call to repentance. 民の神に対する無関心は、エリヤの悔い改めの呼びかけに対する彼らの無言の反応に表れています。Thus, to show the people that the Lord is God, and that He alone is God, Elijah suggests a showdown between God and Baal. そこでエリヤは、主が神であり、主だけが神であることを民に示すために、神とバアルの対決を提案するのです。To this, all the people agree, “That is a good idea.” これに対して民は皆、「それはいい考えだ 」と同意します。

So Elijah tells the prophets of Baal to go first, and to call on the name of their god to bring down fire upon the ox that is on the wood on top of their altar. そこでエリヤは、バアルの預言者たちに先に行き、彼らの神の名を呼んで、彼らの祭壇の上の木の上にいる牛に火を降らせるようにと言いました。Here is what is written of what happened as the prophets of Baal desperately called out to their god. バアルの預言者たちが自分たちの神に必死に呼びかけたときに起こったことが、ここに記されています。

1 Kings 18:26-29（列王記上１８章２６節—２９節）

²⁶ Then they took the ox which was given them and they prepared it and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon saying, “O Baal, answer us.” But there was no voice and no one answered. And they leaped about the altar which they made. ²⁷ It came about at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; either he is occupied or gone aside, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened.” ²⁸ So they cried with a loud voice and cut themselves according to their custom with swords and lances until the blood gushed out on them. ²⁹ When midday was past, they raved until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice; but there was no voice, no one answered, and no one paid attention. ²⁶彼らは与えられた牛を取って整え、朝から昼までバアルの名を呼んで「バアルよ、答えてください」と言った。しかしなんの声もなく、また答える者もなかったので、彼らは自分たちの造った祭壇のまわりに踊った。²⁷昼になってエリヤは彼らをあざけって言った、「彼は神だから、大声をあげて呼びなさい。彼は考えにふけっているのか、よそへ行ったのか、旅に出たのか、または眠っていて起されなければならないのか」。²⁸そこで彼らは大声に呼ばわり、彼らのならわしに従って、刀とやりで身を傷つけ、血をその身に流すに至った。²⁹こうして昼が過ぎても彼らはなお叫び続けて、夕の供え物をささげる時にまで及んだ。しかしなんの声もなく、答える者もなく、また顧みる者もなかった。

After this, we see Elijah going next, as the prophets of Baal were hurting, exhausted, and dejected. この後、バアルの預言者たちが傷つき、疲れ果て、意気消沈している中、エリヤが次に向かったのが分かります。Elijah first repaired the altar of the Lord which had been torn down (1 Kings 18:30). エリヤはまず、壊された主の祭壇を修復しました（列王記上１８章３０節）。

This shows how far away the people of Israel had gone away from following God. このことはイスラエルの民が神に従うことからどれほど遠ざかっていたかを示しています。After arranging the wood and the cut ox pieces upon the altar, 祭壇の上に薪と切った牛の肉片を並べた後、Elijah had four pitchers of water poured upon the offering and on the wood three times (1 Kings 18:33-35).エリヤは供え物と薪の上に４つのピッチャーで３回、水を注がせました（１列王１８章３３節−３５節）。Elijah made sure that his offering and wood and altar were drenched with water. エリヤは、供え物と薪と祭壇が水で濡れたことを確認しました。

He did this to show that God is much greater and powerful than our expectations. 神様が私達の期待よりもはるかに偉大で力強い方であることを示すためです。Perhaps a dry piece of wood will catch fire easily and go up in flames. おそらく、乾いた薪は簡単に火がついて燃え上がるでしょう。But what about a wet piece of wood, or water-logged piece of wood? しかし、濡れた木片や水に浸かった木片はどうでしょうか？

And hereafter, we see that Elijah did not go into this spiritual battle in his own strength. この後、エリヤは自分の力だけでこの霊的な戦いに臨んだのではないことが分かります。Thus, he took the time to pray as he came before the altar to offer the evening sacrifice to God. そのため、彼は夕べのいけにえを神にささげるために祭壇の前に来る時、時間をかけて祈ったのです。He wanted to make sure that the bystanders fully understood that the One who was providing the fire for the sacrifice was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel. 彼は、いけにえのために火を与えてくださるお方がアブラハム、イサク、イスラエルの神であることを、傍観者たちに十分に理解してもらいたかったのです。

1 Kings 18:36-39（列王記上１８章３６節—３９節）

³⁶ At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and I have done all these things at Your word. ³⁷ Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that You, O Lord, are God, and that You have turned their heart back again.” ³⁸ Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. ³⁹ When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God; the Lord, He is God.” ³⁶夕の供え物をささげる時になって、預言者エリヤは近寄って言った、「アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神、主よ、イスラエルでは、あなたが神であること、わたしがあなたのしもべであって、あなたの言葉に従ってこのすべての事を行ったことを、今日知らせてください。³⁷主よ、わたしに答えてください、わたしに答えてください。主よ、この民にあなたが神であること、またあなたが彼らの心を翻されたのであることを知らせてください」。³⁸そのとき主の火が下って燔祭と、たきぎと、石と、ちりとを焼きつくし、またみぞの水をなめつくした。³⁹民は皆見て、ひれ伏して言った、「主が神である。主が神である」。

And of course, another awe-inspiring moment in Elijah’s life came at the end of his time here on earth. そしてもちろん、エリヤの人生におけるもう一つの畏敬の念を抱かせる瞬間は、この地上での生涯の終わりに訪れました。There are only two people recorded in the Bible that God took away into heaven without facing death. 聖書には、神様が死に直面させることなく、天に召した人が二人しか記されていません。

One of them was Enoch, which we find mentioned in Genesis 5:21-24. その一人はエノクで、創世記５章２１節から２４節に記されています。The second person that God took away into heaven without facing death was Elijah. 二人目の人は死に向き合う事なく神様が天に携え挙げられたエリアでした。Here is what the Bible records regarding the conversation of Elijah with his friend and disciple Elisha, and how Elijah was taken up into heaven.  聖書には、エリヤがその友人であり、弟子でもあるエリシャとの会話、そしてエリヤがどのようにして天に召されたかを記録しています。

2 Kings 2:9-12（列王記下２章９節—１２節）

⁹ When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” ¹⁰ He said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” ¹¹ As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven. ¹² Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw Elijah no more. ⁹彼らが渡ったとき、エリヤはエリシャに言った、「わたしが取られて、あなたを離れる前に、あなたのしてほしい事を求めなさい」。エリシャは言った、「どうぞ、あなたの霊の二つの分をわたしに継がせてください」。¹⁰エリヤは言った、「あなたはむずかしい事を求める。あなたがもし、わたしが取られて、あなたを離れるのを見るならば、そのようになるであろう。しかし見ないならば、そのようにはならない」。¹¹彼らが進みながら語っていた時、火の車と火の馬があらわれて、ふたりを隔てた。そしてエリヤはつむじ風に乗って天にのぼった。¹²エリシャはこれを見て「わが父よ、わが父よ、イスラエルの戦車よ、その騎兵よ」と叫んだが、再び彼を見なかった。

So, we see that Elijah was taken up by a whirlwind to heaven in a chariot of fire pulled by horses of fire. つまり、エリヤは、火の馬に引かれた火の車に乗って、つむじ風によって天に引き上げられたのです。Elijah is indeed a very interesting and important person in the Bible as attested to by these awe-inspiring moments in his life.エリヤが聖書の中で実に興味深く重要な人物であることは、彼の人生におけるこれらの畏敬の念を抱かせる瞬間が証明しています。

Furthermore, Elijah’s example of ministry is found in the ministry of John the Baptist in the New Testament. さらに、エリヤのミニストリーの模範は、新約聖書におけるバプテスマのヨハネのミニストリーにも見られます。Elijah’s ministry in a way prepared the way for the other prophets of God to follow by calling people to repent and turn to God. エリヤの宣教は、人々に悔い改めて神に立ち返るように呼びかけることによって、他の神の預言者たちに続く道を用意したのです。Here is what the angel Gabriel declared concerning the work of John the Baptist before he was born: バプテスマのヨハネが生まれる前に、天使ガブリエルがバプテスマのヨハネの働きについて宣言したことがありました：

Luke 1:17（ルカ１章１７節）

“It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”「彼はエリヤの霊と力とをもって、みまえに先立って行き、父の心を子に向けさせ、逆らう者に義人の思いを持たせて、整えられた民を主に備えるであろう」。

Of course, John the Baptist was called to be a forerunner before Jesus Christ, and to prepare the way for Him. もちろん、バプテスマのヨハネはイエス・キリストの前に先駆者として召され、イエス・キリストのために道を備えるために召されたのです。Here is Jesus’ attestation of this fact. この事実をイエス様はこう証言しています。

Matthew 11:14（マタイ１１章１４節）

“And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come.”「そして、もしあなたがたが受けいれることを望めば、この人（ヨハネ）こそは、きたるべきエリヤなのである」。

Elijah also appeared with Moses when Jesus was transfigured as recorded in the New Testament.  新約聖書に記されているように、イエス様が変容された時、エリヤもモーセと共に現れました。

Matthew 17:1-3（マタイ１７章１節—３節）

¹ Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. ² And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. ³ And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. ¹六日ののち、イエスはペテロ、ヤコブ、ヤコブの兄弟ヨハネだけを連れて、高い山に登られた。²ところが、彼らの目の前でイエスの姿が変り、その顔は日のように輝き、その衣は光のように白くなった。³すると、見よ、モーセとエリヤが彼らに現れて、イエスと語り合っていた。

If I were to end my message here, we would just be left with knowing how Elijah served God and trusted and obeyed Him. ここで私のメッセージを終わらせてしまうと、エリヤがどのように神に仕え、神を信頼し従ったかを知るだけで終わってしまうでしょう。This in itself would be great, but this is not the main thing that I wanted to share with you this morning. それ自体は素晴らしいことですが、私が今朝、皆さんに特に伝えたかったことは、このことではないのです。

I have chosen for today’s message title, “Elijah: Resting in God’s Comfort and Peace”. 私は今日のメッセージのタイトルを「エリヤ：神の慰めと平安の中に安らう」としました。So, I want to share with you some ways/incidences in which Elijah rested in God’s comfort and peace. そこで、エリヤが神様の慰めと平安のうちに憩ったいくつかの方法／出来事を分かち合いたいと思います。I want to do this, because it is important for us to understand and appreciate the fact that we can and need to rest in God’s comfort and peace. なぜなら、私達が神様の慰めと平安の中で休むことができ、また休む必要があるという事実を理解し、感謝することが重要だからです。

Also, I am hoping that this will be helpful for all of us who experience or live with a mental illness, since this is mental health awareness month. また、今月はメンタルヘルス啓発月間でもあるため、精神疾患を経験したり、それと共に生活している全ての人達に、このことが助けになることを願っています。As rest is important in bringing about daily healing to our bodies as God has instituted nightly sleep for us to enjoy, 神様が私達が楽しむために毎晩の睡眠を制定されたように、休息は私達の身体に日々の癒しをもたらすために重要であり、rest is also necessary for us spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. 休息は精神的、感情的、霊的にも私達には必要なのです。

And of course, this rest is to be in God’s comfort and peace. そしてもちろん、この休息は神の慰めと平安のうちにあるべきものです。This was true for Elijah and it is true for all of us as well. これはエリヤにとってもそうでしたし、全ての私達にとってもそうなのです。

As was noted earlier, Elijah’s ministry began with him telling king Ahab that　先に述べたように、エリヤのミニストリーは、彼がアハブ王に“there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word” (1 Kings 17:1).「わわたしの言葉のないうちは、数年雨も露もないでしょう」（列王記上１７章１節）と告げることから始まりました。It is interesting to see what God told Elijah to do after having said these things to Ahab. アハブにこのようなことを言った後、神様がエリヤに何をするように言われたかは興味深いことです。

1 Kings 17:2-6（列王記上１７章２０節—２４節）

² The word of the Lord came to him, saying, ³ “Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. ⁴ It shall be that you will drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.” ⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. ⁶ The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he would drink from the brook. ²主の言葉がエリヤに臨んだ、³「ここを去って東におもむき、ヨルダンの東にあるケリテ川のほとりに身を隠しなさい。⁴そしてその川の水を飲みなさい。わたしはからすに命じて、そこであなたを養わせよう」。⁵エリヤは行って、主の言葉のとおりにした。すなわち行って、ヨルダンの東にあるケリテ川のほとりに住んだ。⁶すると、からすが朝ごとに彼の所にパンと肉を運び、また夕ごとにパンと肉を運んできた。そして彼はその川の水を飲んだ。

What God basically told Elijah to do was to rest and relax. 神様がエリヤに命じたことは、基本的に休息とリラックスでした。No, Elijah was not sent to a resort to eat lavish foods and get spa treatments. いや、エリヤは保養地に行かされ、豪華な料理を食べたり、スパトリートメントを受けたわけではありません。

However, Elijah was told to “Go away”, that is to retreat, and hide himself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. そうではなく、エリヤはヨルダンの東にあるテリケ川のほとりに退き、身を隠すように言われたのです。We don’t have to know exact details of what this place looked like to know that it was basically out in the wilderness. この場所がどのような場所であったかを正確に知る必要はありませんが、基本的に荒野の中にあったことは分かっています。

Here, Elijah was provided water to drink from the brook and food provided by ravens. そこで、エリヤは小川から水を飲み、カラスから食べ物が与えられました。The fact that Elijah followed God’s instructions regarding these matters, shows how Elijah trusted and obeyed God. エリヤがこれらの事柄について神様の指示に従ったことは、エリヤがいかに神様を信頼し、従順であったかを示しています。This is what resting in God’s comfort and peace looks like. これこそ、神様の慰めと平安のうちに安住することです。

However, even Elijah was not exempt from the results of the drought conditions that surrounded him. しかし、エリヤでさえ、彼を取り囲んだ干ばつの結果を免れることはできませんでした。Thus, after a while, the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land (1 Kings 17:7). しばらくして、その地に雨が降らなかったので、川は干上がりました（列王記上17:7）。

Thereafter, the word of the Lord came to Elijah again, and he was told to go to a place called Zarephath in the land of Sidon, and to stay there with a widow and her son (1 Kings 17:8-9). その後、主の言葉が再びエリヤに臨み、シドンの地にあるザレパテという場所に行き、やもめとその息子のところに滞在するようにと言われました（列王記上１７章８節−９節）。

There, God provided for this poor widow and her son and Elijah by making sure that their bowl of flour and their jar of oil would not become empty そこで神は、この貧しいやもめとその息子、そしてエリヤのために、彼らの小麦粉の鉢と油のつぼが空にならないようにし、so they could make bread to eat until God sent rain once again (1 Kings 17:14-16).神様が再び雨を降らせるまで、彼らが食べるパンを作ることができるようにされました（列王記上１７章１４節−１６節）。

The drought continued on for more than three years. 干ばつは３年以上続きました。We also see that Elijah rested in God’s comfort and peace through prayer. 私達はまた、エリヤが祈りを通して神様の慰めと平安のうちに休んだことも知っています。We saw earlier of how Elijah did not go into the spiritual battle on Mount Carmel in his own strength, 先ほど、エリヤがカルメル山での霊的な戦いに自分の力で臨むのではなく、but took the time to pray as he came before the altar to offer the evening sacrifice to God (1 Kings 18:36-37).夕べのいけにえを神にささげるために祭壇の前に来て祈る時間を取ったことを見ました（列王記上１８章３６節−３７節）。

Soon after God brought down fire in answer to Elijah’s prayer, Elijah told Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of the roar of a heavy shower.” (1 Kings 18:41) エリヤの祈りに応えて神様が火を降らせたすぐ後、エリヤはアハブに言いました、「大雨の音がするから、上って行って、食い飲みしなさい」。（列王記上１８章４１節）

And God brought rain to shower generously upon the land. そして、神様はその地に惜しみなく雨を降らせました。The Bible states that Elijah prayed regarding this matter as well. 聖書は、エリヤがこの件に関しても祈ったと述べています。

James 5:17-18（ヤコブ５章１７節—１８節）

¹⁷ Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. ¹⁸ Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit. ¹⁷エリヤは、わたしたちと同じ人間であったが、雨が降らないようにと祈をささげたところ、三年六か月のあいだ、地上に雨が降らなかった。¹⁸それから、ふたたび祈ったところ、天は雨を降らせ、地はその実をみのらせた。

Here, we are shown the effectiveness of earnest prayer. ここでは真実な祈りの有効性が示されています。At the same time, we are reminded that Elijah was a man with a nature like ours. 同時に、エリヤが私達と同じような性質を持った人であったことを思い起こさせます。

In other words, the power of prayer is not in the one who is praying but in the God that who answers our prayers. つまり、祈りの力は祈る人にあるのではなく、祈りに答えてくださる神様にあるのです。I mentioned that Elijah stayed with a widow and her son in a place called Zarephath. エリヤがザレパテという場所でやもめとその息子のところに滞在したことは述べました。

While Elijah was there, the son of the widow became sick and died. エリヤがそこにいた時、やもめの息子は病気になって死にました。It was at that time also that Elijah prayed to God, and God answered his prayer by reviving the son of the widow back to life (1 Kings 17:20-24). その時もエリヤは神に祈り、神はその祈りに答えてやもめの息子を生き返らせました（列王記上１７章２０節−２４節）。

So, we can see that Elijah rested in God’s comfort and peace through praying. つまり、エリヤは祈ることを通して、神様の慰めと平安のうちに休んでいたことが分かります。Elijah also rested in God’s comfort and peace when he was too weak to continue on. エリヤはまた、弱り切って続けられなくなった時にも、神の慰めと平安のうちに休んだのです。Elijah went through a time of severe depression. エリヤにはひどく落ち込んだ時期がありました。

This came after Elijah’s victory at Mount Carmel and rain was restored to the land. それは、カルメル山でエリヤが勝利し、大地に雨が回復した後のことでした。Although all the people who saw what happened at Mount Carmel fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, He is God; the Lord, He is God.”, カルメル山での出来事を見た人々は皆、顔を伏せて「主こそ神、主こそ神」と言い、and the prophets of Baal were executed, Ahab’s wife Jezebel was still a threat to Elijah.バアルの預言者たちは処刑されたのですが、アハブの妻イゼベルは依然としてエリヤの脅威でした。

Here is what is recorded of how Elijah responded to Jezebel’s threat. イゼベルの脅しにエリヤがどう対応したかが、ここに記録されています。

1 Kings 19:1-8（列王記上１９章１節—８節）

¹ Now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. ² Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” ³ And he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. ⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.” ⁵ He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat.” ⁶ Then he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. ⁷ The angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you.” ⁸ So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. ¹アハブはエリヤのしたすべての事、また彼がすべての預言者を刀で殺したことをイゼベルに告げたので、²イゼベルは使者をエリヤにつかわして言った、「もしわたしが、あすの今ごろ、あなたの命をあの人々のひとりの命のようにしていないならば、神々がどんなにでも、わたしを罰してくださるように」。³そこでエリヤは恐れて、自分の命を救うために立って逃げ、ユダに属するベエルシバへ行って、しもべをそこに残し、⁴自分は一日の道のりほど荒野にはいって行って、れだまの木の下に座し、自分の死を求めて言った、「主よ、もはや、じゅうぶんです。今わたしの命を取ってください。わたしは先祖にまさる者ではありません」。⁵彼はれだまの木の下に伏して眠ったが、天の使が彼にさわり、「起きて食べなさい」と言ったので、⁶起きて見ると、頭のそばに、焼け石の上で焼いたパン一個と、一びんの水があった。彼は食べ、かつ飲んでまた寝た。⁷主の使は再びきて、彼にさわって言った、「起きて食べなさい。道が遠くて耐えられないでしょうから」。⁸彼は起きて食べ、かつ飲み、その食物で力づいて四十日四十夜行って、神の山ホレブに着いた。

In the past, God was the one who invited Elijah to “Go away” and to retreat and rest. 過去に神様はエリヤに、そこを立ち去り、退いて休息するようにと勧めた方でした。However, here, Elijah is the one who elected to go away, or more accurately, run away from where he was because of Jezebel’s threat. しかし、ここでのエリヤは、イゼベルの脅威のために、自分で立ち去ることを、もっと正確に言うならば、その場所から逃げることを選んだのです。He was so afraid that he ran all the way to Beersheba, エリヤは恐れおののき、ベエルシバまで逃げました。

which was in the southern kingdom of Judah, about 80 miles south of where he was.ベエルシバはユダ王国の南部にあり、エリヤがいた場所から南に８０マイルほど離れたところにありました。And then once there, Elijah “went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree”. そして、エリヤは「一日の旅をして荒野に入り、れだまの木の下に腰をおろしました」。He wanted to be alone. 彼は一人になりたかったのです。

Have you ever heard the term “crippling fear”? 皆さんは「不自由な恐怖」という言葉を聞いたことがあるでしょうか。Have you ever felt like you have reached rock bottom or were too afraid to go on with life that you wanted to die?　 どん底に落ちたような感覚に陥ったり、人生を歩むのが怖くて死にたいと思ったことはないでしょうか。Elijah was truly in such a state here.　 エリヤはまさにそのような状態にあったのです。

In his tired and wearied state, Elijah prayed to God, 疲れ果てた状態で、エリヤは神様にこう祈りました。“It is enough; now, O Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.”　「主よ、もはや、じゅうぶんです。今わたしの命を取ってください。わたしは先祖にまさる者ではありません」Elijah must have been discouraged because it seemed to him that the great work on Mount Carmel did not result in a lasting national revival or return to God.　 エリヤは、カルメル山での偉大な働きが、永続的な民族の復興や神への回帰に結びつかなかったように思えたので、落胆していたに違いありません。

And all he could do was lay down and sleep.　 彼にできることは横になって眠ることだけだったのです。He had no strength to get up and do anything.　立ち上がって何かをする力もなかったのです。But God through an angel met Elijah at where he was at, and He nurtured Elijah with food to eat.　 しかし、神様は御使いを通してエリヤに会い、エリヤに食べ物を与えて養われました。

That was enough for Elijah to be strengthened to travel forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.　 それでエリヤは力づけられ、四十日四十夜、神の山ホレブまで旅することができたのです。It was a 200 miles journey from Beersheba to Mount Horeb, also known as Mount Sinai.　 それはベエルシバからホレブ山（シナイ山とも呼ばれる）までの２００マイルの旅でした。This was God’s way of allowing Elijah some time to recover from his depression.　 これは、エリヤが落ち込みから立ち直るための神の方法でした。

Thus, it shows that God did not demand an immediate recovery from Elijah.　つまり、このことは神様がエリヤにすぐに回復を求めなかったことを示しています。Once on Mount Horeb, Elijah found shelter in a cave.　 ホレブ山に着くと、エリヤは洞窟に避難しました。It was on Mount Horeb that God ministered further to Elijah.　 ホレブ山で、神様はエリヤをさらに助けました。First, God allowed Elijah to vent his frustrations.　 まず、神様はエリヤに不満を吐き出させました。

1 Kings 19:9-10（列王記上１９章９節—１０節）

⁹ Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” ¹⁰ He said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” ⁹その所で彼はほら穴にはいって、そこに宿ったが、主の言葉が彼に臨んで、彼に言われた、「エリヤよ、あなたはここで何をしているのか」。¹⁰彼は言った、「わたしは万軍の神、主のために非常に熱心でありました。イスラエルの人々はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇をこわし、刀をもってあなたの預言者たちを殺したのです。ただわたしだけ残りましたが、彼らはわたしの命を取ろうとしています」。

Secondly, God approached Elijah with gentleness. 第二に、神様はエリヤに優しく近づきました。

1 Kings 19:11-14（列王記上１９章１１節—１４節）

¹¹ So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. ¹² After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing. ¹³ When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” ¹⁴ Then he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” ¹¹主は言われた、「出て、山の上で主の前に、立ちなさい」。その時主は通り過ぎられ、主の前に大きな強い風が吹き、山を裂き、岩を砕いた。しかし主は風の中におられなかった。風の後に地震があったが、地震の中にも主はおられなかった。¹²地震の後に火があったが、火の中にも主はおられなかった。火の後に静かな細い声が聞えた。¹³エリヤはそれを聞いて顔を外套に包み、出てほら穴の口に立つと、彼に語る声が聞えた、「エリヤよ、あなたはここで何をしているのか」。¹⁴彼は言った、「わたしは万軍の神、主のために非常に熱心でありました。イスラエルの人々はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇をこわし、刀であなたの預言者たちを殺したからです。ただわたしだけ残りましたが、彼らはわたしの命を取ろうとしています」。

God knew exactly what the depressed and discouraged Elijah needed. 落ち込んで落胆していたエリヤに必要なものを、神様は正確にご存知でした。Elijah had faith in God but he lacked a personal encounter with God. エリヤには神様への信仰はありましたが、神様との個人的な出会いが欠けていました。After Elijah recognized God was there with him in the gentle breeze, he responded by covering his face, an expression of humility, and went out of the cave to meet with God. そよ風の中に神様が共におられることを認識したエリヤは、謙遜の表現である顔を覆って応え、神に会うために洞窟の外に出ました。

Interestingly, when God asked Elijah the same question as before, Elijah gave the same response. 興味深いことに、神様が以前と同じ質問をエリヤにした時、エリヤは同じ答えをしました。Yet, there must have been something helpful for Elijah in having this up close and personal conversation with God. しかし、このように神様と間近で個人的な会話をすることで、エリヤにとって助けになることがあったに違いありません。Then, God gave Elijah some assurances and things to do. そして、神様はエリヤにいくつかの保証となすべきことを与えられました。

God gave Elijah the task of anointing Jehu (1 Kings 19:16) who was to be the king to succeed the corrupt Ahab and his wife Jezebel. 神様はエリヤに、堕落したアハブとその妻イゼベルの後を継ぐ王となるべきエヒフに油を注ぐ仕事を与えたのです（列王記上１９章１６節）。

God also gave Elijah a friend and a successor in Elisha (1 Kings 19:6), 神様はまた、エリシャという友人であり、後継者をエリヤに与え（列王記上１９章６節）、which gave him hope in knowing that his work would continue on after his departure.彼が去った後も自分の業が続くという希望をエリヤに与えました。God also gave Elijah the encouraging news that God had reserved seven thousand true followers of God in Israel (1 Kings 19:18), 神様はまたエリヤに、神がイスラエルに7千人の真の神の信者を確保しているという励ましの知らせを与え（列王記上１９章１８節）、showing him the fruitfulness of his prophetic ministry.彼の預言者としての働きが実り豊かなものであることを示しました。

As I mentioned earlier, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. 先に述べたように５月はメンタルヘルス啓発月間です。It is a good time to focus on the importance of mental health and its impact on our well-being. 心の健康の重要性と、それが私達の幸福に及ぼす影響に焦点を当てる良い機会です。Mental health conditions can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, or income level. メンタルヘルスの状態は性別、年齢、人種、民族、収入レベルに関係なく、誰にでも影響を及ぼす可能性があります。Mental health conditions can affect even Christians, and those who we may consider spiritually strong. 精神的健康状態は、クリスチャンや、私達が霊的に強いと思っている人達にさえも影響を及ぼす可能性があります。As we saw with Elijah, any one of us can get discouraged and depressed. エリヤで見たように、私達の誰もが落胆し、落ち込む可能性があるのです。

In an article titled, “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay: Tips and Resources for Mental Health Awareness Month” on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) website, 　Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)のウェブサイトにある「大丈夫でなくていい： メンタルヘルス啓発月間のヒントとリソース」の記事には、It mentions that “if you were standing in a room full of people, at least one out of every five of those people likely experienced anxiety, もしあなたが大勢の人の中に立っているとしたら、その中の少なくとも５人に１人は、過去一年間に不安、

depression, or other mental health conditions in the last year.”うつ病、その他の精神的健康状態を経験した可能性があると書いています。This is mentioned to underscore the fact that mental health is something that we all deal with directly or indirectly in our own lives or in the lives of those around us. これは、メンタルヘルスが、私達自身の生活や周囲の人々の生活において、直接的または間接的に対処するものであるという事実を強調するために述べられています。

The article goes on to say:  “The good news is… mental health conditions are treatable.” 記事はこう続きます：「良いニュースは…メンタルヘルスの状態は治療可能だということです」And I am here to say that if you are experiencing or living with a mental health condition, そして、もしあなたが精神的な健康状態を経験していたり、抱えていたりするのであれば、

don’t be afraid or ashamed to seek help from a professional mental health practitioner, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist or counselor.恐れたり恥ずかしがったりせずに、精神科医や心理学者、カウンセラーなど、精神衛生の専門家に助けを求めましょう。At the same time, I am here to say that God knows and cares about your condition, and He is near to you. 同時に、神様はあなたの状態を知っておられ、気にかけておられ、あなたの側にいます。

He wants to hear your struggles and frustrations and difficulties and sorrows. 神様はあなたの葛藤や苛立ち、困難や悲しみを聞きたいと思っておられるます。So, I want to invite you to rest in God’s comfort and peace like Elijah did. だから、エリヤがしたように、神様の慰めと平安のうちに休むよう、あなたをお招きしたいと思います。

What God basically told Elijah to do at the outset of his prophetic ministry was to rest and relax. 神様はエリヤが預言者としての働きを始めた当初、基本的にエリヤに言われたことは、休んでリラックスすることでした。We all need times to retreat, that is get away, and to rest and to relax. 私達は皆、退くこと、つまり離れて休むこと、リラックスすることが必要なのです。

Elijah also rested in God’s comfort and peace through prayer. エリヤはまた、祈りによって神様の慰めと平安のうちに憩いました。This is such a blessing, because we can do this 24/7, at anytime and anywhere. 私達はいつでも、どこでも、年中無休で祈ることができるのですから。Elijah also rested in God’s comfort and peace when he was too weak to continue on. エリヤもまた、弱り切って続けられなくなった時、神の慰めと平安のうちに休んだのです。

And please note that as Elijah did so, He was comforted, that is given strength, and was given peace to continue to live. そして、エリヤがそうすることによって、慰められ、力を与えられ、生き続ける平安を与えられたことに注目してほしいと思います。And he was able to enjoy this comfort and peace in close relationship to God. そして彼は、神様との密接な関係の中で、この慰めと平安を楽しむことができたのです。

Thus, in closing, I want to invite you to learn what I believe Elijah learned to do from His personal encounter with God on Mount Horeb. このように、最後にエリヤがホレブ山での神様との個人的な出会いから学んだことを皆さんにも学んでいただきたいと願います。Please go home with these verses stored away in your heart: この聖句を胸に刻んでお帰りください。

Psalm 46:10-11（詩篇４６篇１０節—１１節）

¹⁰ He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” ¹¹ The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. ¹⁰「静まって、わたしこそ神であることを知れ。わたしはもろもろの国民のうちにあがめられ、全地にあがめられる」。¹¹万軍の主はわれらと共におられる、ヤコブの神はわれらの避け所である。

Let us continually rest in God’s comfort and peace. 神様の慰めと平安のうちに絶えず休息しようではありませんか。Let us pray. お祈りしましょう。
