イエス様は多くの譬え話を語りました。これらの譬え話の中には大工であった父ヨセフの後ろ姿を見ながら育ったイエス様を思い起こさせるものがあります。
あなたがたのうちで、だれかが邸宅を建てようと思うなら、それを仕上げるのに足りるだけの金を持っているかどうかを見るため、まず、すわってその費用を計算しないだろうか。（ルカ１４章２８節、）
夜、遅くまで仕事の採算を計算するヨセフ、家計のやりくりを母マリヤと語るヨセフの声をイエス様は寝床で聞いていたことでしょう。自分の仕事や家庭に対して忠実であること、勤勉であることを、ヨセフの背中はイエス様に見せたことでしょう。
わたしを主よ、主よ、と呼びながら、なぜわたしの言うことを行わないのか。わたしのもとにきて、わたしの言葉を聞いて行う者が、何に似ているか、あなたがたに教えよう。それは、地を深く掘り、岩の上に土台をすえて家を建てる人に似ている。洪水が出て激流がその家に押し寄せてきても、それを揺り動かすことはできない。よく建ててあるからである。（ルカ６章４６節ー４８節）
イエス様はヨセフから家を建てる時の土台の大切さについて、聞いていたことでしょう。そのために岩を掘り下げ、土台を築いている父の額の汗を見たことでしょう。勤勉や誠実であることが公になったり、ニュースになることはありません。そこにスポットライトは当たりません。しかし、このことこそが最も大切なところなのです。
私たちの日常は同じことが繰り返される日々です。ある人はそれを「退屈」と呼ぶかもしれません。その退屈に耐えられなくなることがあるかもしれません。「刺激や快楽を求めたらいい」という囁きが聞こえてくる時があるかもしれません。「妻子のことはいいから、お前が好きなような人生を送ればいい」という囁きが聞こえる時があるかもしれない。しかし、それらに目もくれずに愛する者達を守るために、その日常に誠実に向き合い、汗を流す。そのことに今日も明日も心を尽くしていく。
きっとヨセフはそのような男だったのだと思います。そして、神はその彼の真実な心に目をとめたのです。数多くいる男の中から、神はその一人子、イエスをヨセフに託したのです（大倉）。

ヨセフ：目立たない男の愛と勇気

先々週、私はルカによる福音書から高齢でありながら神様によって子供が与えられたザカリヤとエリサベツについてお話しました。人の体の機能を誰よりも知る医者のルカが「ありえない年齢の夫婦が子供を産んだ」ということを記録したのです。そして、次にこの医者は「夫を知らない女にイエス・キリストが宿った」ということを記録しました。今日はこのありえない出来事に関わったある人に注目したいと思います。
聖書の中にヨセフという人物がいます。多くの方々に愛されている人物です。個人的なことになりますが、私の長男のミドルネームもヨセフなのです。当時、この息子の名前を私の母に伝えたところ、すかさずこんな質問が返ってきました。「その名前は旧約聖書のヨセフ？それとも新約聖書のヨセフ？」。
旧約聖書のヨセフはエジプトの宰相にまでなったヨセフ。新約聖書のヨセフはマリヤの夫、イエス様の父であったヨセフ。私は思いました。何でそんなことを聞くのだろう。
エジプトの宰相になったヨセフに決まっているじゃないか。マリヤの夫、ヨセフの名前を選ぶ理由なんてあるのか。「この子の名前はマリヤの夫の名前からとりました」という人に今まで会ったことなどないのに！ なぜ、その時に私の頭にイエスの父ヨセフが思い浮かばなかったか、考えてみました。
まず、第一に彼の存在が、どうしてもイエスの母マリヤの背後に隠れてしまっているからです。美術館に行くと「イエスを抱くマリヤ」の絵画をいたるところで見かけます。ある意味、中世の作品を展示する美術館には「イエスを抱くマリヤの絵」ばかりが展示されています。いいえ、絵画だけではなく、マリヤの彫像というものも、あちこちで見かけますし、「アベ・マリヤ」を聴いたことがないという人はいませんでしょう。
しかし、私はイエス様を抱くヨセフの絵画や彫像を見たり、彼を誉め称える歌を見たり、聞いたりしたことがほとんどないのです。マリヤはイエス様の十字架の元にまで伴い、使徒行伝においても他の弟子たちと祈る姿が記録されています（使徒行伝１章１４節）。しかし、ヨセフの場合、イエス様が１２歳の時、家族でエルサレムに行かれたという出来事以降、聖書の中に登場することはないのです。
多くの学者達は、ヨセフはイエスが成人する頃には亡くなったのだろうと書いていますが、私もそうなのではないかと思います。このようにヨセフは目立つことがないのです。あえて私達が思い起こすイメージは、置物や絵葉書で見る、家畜小屋でマリヤの側に寄り添う男としての姿なのです。ですから、どう考えても、やはり波乱万丈の人生を歩み、驚くべき結末と共に家族を救った旧約聖書のヨセフの生涯に惹きつけられてしまうのです。
しかし、聖書をよくよく読んでみると、このヨセフなくしてクリスマスの出来事は進展することがなかったことが分かります。今日は静かで目立たない男、このヨセフについてお話ししましょう。
マタイ１章１８節—２５節
18 イエス・キリストの誕生の次第はこうであった。母マリヤはヨセフと婚約していたが、まだ一緒にならない前に、聖霊によって身重になった。19夫ヨセフは正しい人であったので、彼女のことが公けになることを好まず、ひそかに離縁しようと決心した。20彼がこのことを思いめぐらしていたとき、主の使が夢に現れて言った、「ダビデの子ヨセフよ、心配しないでマリヤを妻として迎えるがよい。その胎内に宿っているものは聖霊によるのである。21彼女は男の子を産むであろう。その名をイエスと名づけなさい。彼は、おのれの民をそのもろもろの罪から救う者となるからである」。22すべてこれらのことが起ったのは、主が預言者によって言われたことの成就するためである。すなわち、23「見よ、おとめがみごもって男の子を産むであろう。その名はインマヌエルと呼ばれるであろう」。これは、「神われらと共にいます」という意味である。24ヨセフは眠りからさめた後に、主の使が命じたとおりに、マリヤを妻に迎えた。25しかし、子が生れるまでは、彼女を知ることはなかった。そして、その子をイエスと名づけた。
ここにはヨセフはマリヤの婚約者であったと書かれています。当時のユダヤ社会において「婚約」は、結婚と同一視されていました。ですから、婚約期間中に男性が死亡すれば、その女性はやもめと見なされました。その結婚前のマリヤが聖霊によって身ごもったというのです。
ここにいる男性達にお尋ねしたい。あなたが誰かと婚約しているとしましょう。現代的に言うならば、結婚式の日程や新婚旅行の行き先や、将来、どこに住もうかと話し合っている時です。お二人にとってこれからの生活を考える大切な時です。その時にその婚約者である女性が妊娠していることが分かった。そして、それは明らかに自分の子ではない。もし、あなたがこのことを彼女から聞いたらどうしますか。
聖書は淡々とこのことを記していますが、この時のヨセフの心に去来する思いは複雑であったに違いありません。厳格なユダヤ社会で一世紀に起きたこの出来事は、歓迎されるものではありませんでした。律法は姦淫によって妊娠した婚約中の女は石打ちの刑に処するように定めていました。
きっとヨセフの心はかき乱されたことでしょう。「俺は裏切られたのか」という疑い、怒り、恐れ、それでもマリヤを愛しく思う思い。「どうしたらいいのだろうか」、彼は思い悩んだに違いありません。そのような時、夢の中で御使いが現れ、ヨセフに告げます。
マタイ１章２０節
「ダビデの子ヨセフよ、心配しないでマリヤを妻として迎えるがよい。その胎内に宿っているものは聖霊によるのである」
御使いはマリヤの妊娠は彼女の不貞によるのではなく、それは聖霊によるのだということを告げるのです。「とは言っても」と私たちは思います。この時にヨセフが問われることは多くはなく、一つだけなのです。そう、「御使いとマリヤの言葉を信じることができるか」ということです。ヨセフはどうしたのでしょうか。
マタイ１章２４節
ヨセフは眠りからさめた後に、主の使が命じたとおりに、マリヤを妻に迎えたのです。
ヨセフは御使いの言葉を聞いて、目覚めてすぐにマリヤを妻として迎えました。ヨセフは一週間、悩み考えて決めたのではなく、彼はすぐにこのことを心に決めたのです。彼はマリヤの夫となり、イエス様の父となる覚悟を決めたのです。こうして、イエス・キリストはマリヤの私生児とならず、ヨセフはイエス様を我が子として育てたのです。この時のマリヤとヨセフの親族や町の人たちの様子について、聖書は触れていません。
しかし、いつの時代でも噂話というのは存在します。マリヤとヨセフが一緒になった時期と子供の出産の時期について、ご丁寧にも計算をした人がいて、色々な憶測や噂がたったかもしれません。きっとヨセフはそれらの噂や人々の好奇の視線がマリヤに向かないように、自分が盾となり彼女を守ったことでしょう。
子供が産まれる時、必ずしも、その時の環境が夫婦の味方をしてくれるとは限りません。ヨセフが重大な決心をした後、彼は身重のマリヤを連れて、人口調査のためにベツレヘムの町に行かねばなりませんでした。妊娠中ゆえに免除ということはなかったのです。
さらに、追い討ちをかけるように、ベツレヘムには彼らが泊まることができる宿がなかったのです。夜になると砂漠気候のあの中東一帯の冷え込みは相当なはずです。彼だけならいい、しかし、彼の傍らには妊婦であるマリヤがいる。
神が介入されて生まれてくる子であるのに、なんでこんなに惨めな状況に置かれるのか。神の子なるイエス・キリストのステイタスを考えれば、このベイビーは人類史上最高のVIPなのです。本来、世界の王室が「我が宮殿を神の王子の誕生のために使ってください」とひれ伏して頼んでもおかしくないお方なのです。宿屋の入り口で度々、あしらわれる言葉を聞きながら、ヨセフの心にはそんな思いが沸いてきたかもしれません。
そして、どうにか家畜小屋という、人が宿泊をすることなどない部屋・・・、部屋というより、スペースを確保します。子供を出産するということにおいては、衛生的に考えても、そこは最悪の場所でした。その劣悪な状況の中、イエス・キリストは誕生したのです。
確かに状況は悪くとも、幼子の誕生は確かにこの夫婦にとって大きな喜びとなったことでしょう。しかし、そんな時も束の間、今度はこのイエスを殺そうとしているヘロデの魔の手がこの家族に忍び寄ります。
ヘロデとは当時、イエスが誕生したベツレヘム一帯を統治していた王でした。彼はこの土地に「王が生まれる」という、東方から来た博士達の言葉に不安を感じ、恐れたのです。王である自分の前に別の王が生まれるということに彼は危機感を感じたのです。
ですから、その子が成長する前にこの世から抹殺すべく、彼はその一帯の２歳以下の男の子達を全て殺そうとしました。私たちが生きる世界にはいつも嫉みがうごめき、そのことゆえに私達は思いがけない所に押しやられることがあります。そのことは昔も今も変わりません。ヨセフと家族はこの大波をかぶったのです。
これらのことから私達には窺い知れることがあります。私たちは自分に降りかかる諸々の試練をきれいさっぱり取り除けてくださいと神に祈ります。しかし、時に主は私たちをその中に置かれることがあります。神の子イエスでさえ、その時に理不尽な取扱いに甘んじたのです。しかし、その度に確かに神は彼らに逃れの道を示されました。御使いはヘロデのことを夢でヨセフに知らせます。
マタイ２章１３節
「立って、幼子とその母とを連れて、エジプトに逃げなさい。そして、あなたに知らせるまで、そこにとどまっていなさい。ヘロデが幼子を捜し出して、殺そうとしている」
ヨセフはその夢を見て、ハッと目覚めたと思います。まだ、朝は来ていません。ヨセフはどうしたのか。
マタイ２章１４節、１５節
そこで、ヨセフは立って、夜の間に幼な子とその母とを連れてエジプトへ行き、ヘロデが死ぬまでそこにとどまっていた。
先にマリヤを妻として迎えた時と同様、それが神の心であると知るなら、ヨセフの決断は早いのです。彼は夢から覚めると、すぐに旅支度を始め、暗いうちにベツレヘムからエジプトに向かったのです。目立たないヨセフの中に私達は強い信仰と意思をここに見るのです。
偏見と誤解を受けかねない状況で生まれてきた神の子。やっと見つけた粗末な家畜小屋で生まれた神の子。状況は望ましくなくとも、しばらくの間、静かに家族三人で暮らすことができたらと私達は思います。嫉妬でヘロデが怒り狂ったとしても、そのヘロデを神が事前に処罰してくれたらと思うのが、私たちの考えです。しかし、ヘロデが姿を消すことはなく、ヨセフは家族を引き連れて外国、エジプトへと彼らは逃げていきました。
「乳飲児を抱えて異国で暮らす」ということの大変さを私達は少なからず知っています。幼い我が子と妻のために、ヨセフが異国でどのようにして生計を立てたのか、そのことに対して聖書は沈黙を保っています。ある学者はあの東方の博士が持参したギフトを売って、それを生活のために使ったのではないかと言っていますが、そうだったのかもしれません。いずれにせよ、私達は容易に想像できます。その生活は「明日は何を食べようか」というような日々だったということを。
私たちは三ヶ月後にクリスマスを迎えます。私たちはイエス・キリストの誕生を喜びます。しかし、そのクリスマスの喜びは、これらの困難と試練の上に成り立っているのです。そして、その困難と試練の矢面に立ち続けたのが、私達がほとんど注目しないヨセフだったのです。
ヨセフにとってイエスの父となるという決心は、人生を投げ出さず、諦めず、何があっても家庭を守り抜くということの決意でした。そして、その決意は彼の人間的な感情によって生まれたものではなかったのです。マリアになされた「受胎告知」も、ヨセフに知らされた「マリヤの懐妊」も「エジプトに逃げる」ということも、全て御使いを通して語られた神の言葉だったのです。「あなたの愛する者を守り通しなさい」という神のみ言葉が彼に使命を与え、彼はその使命に速やかに応えたのです。
「なぜ、こんなことが！」というここと経験し、幾多の苦労をくぐりぬけ、神から与えられた使命に従い、自分達の歩む道を切り開いていく。その道のりには、彼に使命を与えた神が共にいるのだということを彼は信じ続け、妻と子を守り通したのです。
彼らのエジプトへの避難はヘロデが死ぬまで続きます。そして、ヘロデの死後、彼らはナザレに戻ってきます。その時から聖書には記録されていない彼らの日々の生活が始まります。そこには大工であったヨセフが木を切る横で、その木を積み木のようにして遊ぶ少年イエスの姿があったことでしょう。食卓を囲む彼らの姿がそこにあったことでしょう。

イエス様はヨセフから家を建てる時の土台の大切さについて、聞いていたことでしょう。そのために岩を掘り下げ、土台を築いている父の額の汗を見たことでしょう。その父の堅実な姿を通して、イエス様は同じことが人の人生にも当てはまるのだということを確認したことでしょう。もし、私たちの土台が堅固であるのなら、私たちは立ち続けることができる。
主にある皆さん、勤勉や誠実であることが公けになったり、ニュースになることはありません。そこにスポットライトは当たりません。しかし、このことは私達にとって最も大切なことなのです。

今も全世界に影響を及ぼすイエス・キリストの誕生の背後には一人の男がいました。目立つことがなかった、静かな男です。誠実に妻を愛し、家族を守ろうとした男です。
汗を流して、誰かのために生きることに徹した男です。家族を守るために勇気を振り絞った男です。私情を入れずに、神の言葉に従い生きることを決意した男です。
男性の皆さん、ここに私たちのロールモデルがいないでしょうか。この男が勇気をもって神からの言葉に従って立ち上がった時、神はイエス・キリストを通して我々の前に、閉じることができない恵みの扉を開いたのです。神様のご計画は世の中のスポットライトに照らされて実現していくのではありません。その壮大な計画はこのような静かな男たち、そして女たちによって進められるのです。
来たる一週間、私たちに託されていることに心を込めて臨んでいこうではありませんか。そして、それを次の週も次の週も続けていこうではありませんか。独立記念日に私たちは花火の音を聞き、外に出て、「すごいなー」と花火を眺めますが、その花火はその日だけのもので毎日、打ち上げられるものではありません。しかし、私たちの家庭の灯火は毎日、燃え続けなければならないのです。昔も今も我々の最大の課題は複雑なものではありません。それは良き決断を継続できるかどうかということなのです。
主にある皆さん、互いに励まし合い、聖霊様の力添えを日々、いただいて一日、そしてさらにもう一日、主を仰いでまいりましょう。家族を伴って、毎週、主への礼拝と共に一週間を始めてください。日曜の朝の気分でそのことを決めるのではなく、予定が空いているからということではなく、まず神を第一にしましょう。それが週の初めに私たちが家族にできる最大のことであり、人間の本文です。
最後に一言、私は先の自分の言葉をここに撤回し、あらためて皆さんにお勧めしたいことがあります。男の子に名前をつける時、エジプトの宰相になったヨセフもいいですが、マリアの夫のヨセフもお勧めです。ヤコブの息子、ヨセフは王宮からエジプトの栄華を眺めたことでしょう。約１８００年後、マリアの夫、ヨセフはそのエジプトで汗を流して家族を守り通しました。神の前に彼らが成し遂げたことに優劣はないのです。ヨセフは静かで、目立たない男でした。しかし、彼ほど愛と勇気のある男を私たちは知らないのです。

Joseph: Love and Courage of an Inconspicuous Man

A couple of weeks ago, from the Gospel of Luke, I spoke about Zachariah and Elizabeth, who were given a child by God despite their old age. Luke, a doctor who knows how the human body works more than anyone else, recorded that “a couple of improbable age had a child”. This doctor then went on to record that “Jesus Christ was conceived in a woman who was a virgin”. Today I would like to focus on one person involved in this unlikely event.
In the Bible there is a man named Joseph. He is loved by many people. On a personal note, my oldest son’s middle name is also Joseph. At the time of his birth, when I told my mother the name of this son, she immediately asked me this question. “Is that name Joseph in the Old Testament? Or the Joseph in the New Testament?”
The Joseph of the Old Testament was Joseph who even became second only to the Pharaoh in Egypt. Joseph of the New Testament was Mary’s husband, Joseph, the father of Jesus. I thought to myself. Why would she ask that?
Of course it was Joseph who became second only to the Pharaoh in Egypt. Is there any reason to choose the name of Mary’s husband, Joseph? “I named this child after Mary’s husband.” I have never met anyone who has said that! I have thought about why Joseph, the father of Jesus, did not come to my mind at that time.
First of all, it is because his presence is inevitably hidden behind Mary, the mother of Jesus. When you go to art museums, you see paintings of “Mary holding Jesus” everywhere. In a sense, art museums that exhibit medieval works display only “paintings of Mary holding Jesus”. No, not only paintings, but also statues of Mary can be seen here and there, and who hasn’t heard “Ave Maria”?
But I have rarely seen a painting or statue of Joseph holding Jesus, or seen or heard a song in his honor. Mary even accompanied Jesus to the cross and is recorded praying with the other disciples in the book of Acts (Acts 1:14). However, in the case of Joseph, he does not appear in the Bible after the event when Jesus went to Jerusalem with his family when he was 12 years old.
Many scholars have written that Joseph probably died by the time Jesus came of age, and I also think that is true. Thus Joseph does not stand out. The image we dare to conjure up is that of the man we see on figurines and postcards, as the man who stands by Mary’s side in an animal shed. Therefore, no matter what you think, you are still drawn to the life of Joseph of the Old Testament, who lived a tumultuous life and saved his family with a surprising ending.
However, a close reading of the Bible reveals that without Joseph, the events of Christmas would not have progressed. Today let me talk about this quiet and inconspicuous man, this Joseph.
Matthew 1:18-25
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
Here it is written that Joseph was Mary’s fiancé. In Jewish society at that time, “engagement” was equated with marriage. Thus, if a man died during the engagement period, the woman was considered a widow. It is said that Mary conceived a child by the Holy Spirit before the wedding.
I would like to ask the men here. Suppose you are engaged to someone. In modern terms, this is when we are discussing wedding dates, honeymoon destinations, and where we will live in the future. This is an important time for both of you to think about your future life together. It was then that you found out that the woman who is your fiancée is pregnant. And it is clearly not your child. What would you do if you heard this from her?
Although the Bible describes this matter in a straightforward manner, Joseph’s feelings at this time must have been complex. This event, which occurred in the first century in a strict Jewish society, was not welcomed. The Law required that betrothed women who became pregnant through adultery be stoned to death.
Surely Joseph’s heart must have been stirred. Thoughts of doubt, anger, fear, and still love for Mary of “Have I been betrayed?” He must have struggled with thoughts of “What should I do?” At such a time, an angel appears to Joseph in a dream and tells him.
Matthew 1:20
“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”
The angel tells him that Mary’s pregnancy is not due to her infidelity, but that it is due to the Holy Spirit.「We think, “You say that but . . .” Joseph is not asked many questions at this time, just only one. Yes, the question is: “Can I believe the words of the angel and Mary?” What did Joseph do?
Matthew 1:24
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
Joseph heard the angel’s words, and as soon as he awoke took Mary home as his wife. Joseph did not spend a week worrying and thinking about it; he immediately made up his mind to do this. He was ready to become Mary’s husband and Jesus’ father. Thus, Jesus Christ did not become Mary’s illegitimate child, and Joseph raised Jesus as his own son. The Bible does not mention the condition of Mary and Joseph’s relatives or the townspeople at this time.
However, gossip has always existed. There may have been a lot of speculation and rumors about the timing of Mary and Joseph’s coming together and the birth of their child, with some people making careful calculations. I am sure that Joseph would have protected Mary from those rumors and people’s curiosity by acting as a shield for her.
When a child is born, the environment at the time is not necessarily on the couple’s side. After Joseph made his momentous decision, he had to take Mary, who was pregnant, to the town of Bethlehem for a population census. There was no exemption because of pregnancy.
To add insult to injury, there was no inn in Bethlehem where they could stay. At night, the cold in that part of the Middle East with its desert climate must be considerable. If it was him alone it would have been fine, but by his side was the pregnant Mary.
Why are we put in such a miserable situation, when the child that is to be born is by God’s intervention? Considering the status of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, this baby is the greatest VIP in human history. He is the One to whom the royal families of the world should essentially bow down and plea, “Please use my palace for the birth of the Prince of God.” Such thoughts may have welled up in Joseph’s mind as he listened to the words that were frequently spoken at the inn’s entrance.
Then, somehow, he manages to secure an animal shed, a room, or rather a space, in which no one would ever stay overnight. It was the worst place to give birth to a child, even from a hygienic point of view. It was under these poor circumstances that Jesus Christ was born.
Indeed, even though the situation was bad, the birth of an infant would certainly have been a great joy for this couple. However, the time is short-lived, and now the evil hand of Herod, who wants to kill this Jesus, creeps up on this family.
Herod was the king who ruled the area of Bethlehem where Jesus was born at that time. He was concerned and afraid at the words of the Magi from the east who said that a “king would be born” in this land. As king, he felt threatened by the fact that another king would be born there.
Therefore, in order to eliminate this child from the world before he grew up, he tried to kill all the boys in the area under the age of two. The world in which we live is always rife with jealousy, which can push us into unexpected places. That was and still is the case. Joseph and his family were covered by this great wave.
There are things we can come to know from these things. We pray to God to remove all the trials that befall us. But sometimes the Lord places us in the midst of it. Even Jesus, the Son of God, indulged in unreasonable treatment at that time. But each time, God truly showed them the way of escape. The angel informs Joseph about Herod in a dream.
Matthew 2:13
“Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
I think Joseph woke up with a start from that dream. Morning has not come yet. What did Joseph do?
Matthew 2:14, 15
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod.
As when he took Mary as his wife earlier, Joseph’s decision is quick when he knows it is God’s will. When he awoke from his dream, he immediately began preparing for his journey and left Bethlehem for Egypt while it was still dark. In the inconspicuous Joseph we see here a strong faith and will.
The Son of God born under circumstances that could cause prejudice and misunderstanding. The Son of God born in a crude animal shed that was finally found. Even though the situation is not desirable, we think that if the three of them can live together as a family quietly for a while. Even if Herod became angry because of jealousy, we would wish that God would have punished him in advance. But Herod did not disappear, and Joseph took his family and they fled to a foreign country, Egypt.
We know more than a little about the difficulties of “living in a foreign country with a nursing child”. The Bible is silent on how Joseph made a living in a foreign country for his young son and wife. One scholar says that he might have sold the gifts from the Magi from the east, and used that to make a living, and perhaps he did. In any case, we can easily imagine. That life was like a “what shall we eat tomorrow” kind of day to day.
We will celebrate Christmas in three months. We rejoice in the birth of Jesus Christ. But the joy of that Christmas is built on these difficulties and trials. And it was Joseph, whom we rarely pay attention to, who continued to bear the brunt of the difficulties and trials.
For Joseph, the decision to become the father of Jesus was a determination not to throw his life away, not to give up, and to protect his family no matter what. And that determination was not born of his human emotions. The “Annunciation” to Mary, “Mary’s pregnancy” to Joseph, and “fleeing to Egypt” were all God’s words spoken through an angel. God’s words gave him a mission, “Keep your loved ones safe,” and he responded promptly to that mission.
Having experienced times of “How could this happen?”, and many other hardships, he followed the mission given by God, and created their own path. Along the way, he continued to believe that the God who had given him his mission was with him, and he kept his wife and son safe.
Their evacuation to Egypt continues until Herod’s death. Then, after Herod’s death, they return to Nazareth. From that moment on, their daily life, which is not recorded in the Bible, begins. There, Joseph, a carpenter, would have been cutting wood, and the boy Jesus would have been playing with the wood as if it were a building block. There, they would have been around the dining table.
Jesus Christ told many parables. Some of the parables remind us of Jesus, who grew up watching the back of his father Joseph, a carpenter.
Luke 14:28
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?”
At night, as Joseph stayed up late to calculate the profitability of his work, the boy Jesus in bed would have heard Joseph’s voice talking with Mary about how to make ends meet. Joseph’s back would have shown Jesus that he was faithful and diligent toward his work and family.
Luke 6:46-49
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
Jesus would have heard from Joseph about the importance of the foundation when building a house. He would have seen the sweat on his father’s forehead as he dug into the rock and laid the foundation on it. Through his father’s steadfastness, Jesus would have confirmed that the same would be true in the lives of others. If our foundation is solid, we can keep standing.
People in the Lord, being diligent and faithful is not made public, or is it newsworthy. There is no spotlight there. But this is most important to us.
Our daily life is a repetition of the same thing day after day. One might call it “boring”. You may find that boredom unbearable. There may be times when you hear whispers of “just seek stimulation and pleasure”. There may be times when you hear whispers of “forget about your wife and kids, just live your life the way you want to”. However, we sincerely face and sweat out our daily lives to protect our loved ones without paying attention to these things. We will devote ourselves to that today and tomorrow.
I am sure Joseph was such a man. And God took notice of his true heart. Out of all the men, God entrusted His only Son, Jesus, to Joseph.
In the background of the birth of Jesus Christ, which still affects the entire world today, was a man. He is a quiet man who never stood out. He is a man who faithfully loved his wife and tried to protect his family.
He is a man dedicated to sweating and living for someone else. He is a man who gave his all to be courageous to protect his family. He is a man determined to live according to God’s word, without personal feelings.
Men, do you not see our role model here? When this man courageously stood up according to the word from God, God opened before us through Jesus Christ a door of grace that cannot be closed. God’s plan is not realized in the spotlight of the world. The grand plan is carried out by these quiet men and women.
Let us be mindful of what is entrusted to us in the coming week. And let us continue to do so for the next week and the next. On Independence Day we hear the fireworks and go outside and look at them and say, “Wow,” but they are only for that day and not every day. But our household lights must continue to burn every day.In the past and still today, our greatest challenges are not complex. It is about the ability to continue to make good decisions.
People in the Lord, let us encourage one another, and receive the Holy Spirit’s power each day, and let us look to the Lord, one day, and then another day more. Begin each week with worship to the Lord, accompanied by your family. Don’t make that decision based on how you feel on Sunday morning, and don’t make it because you have an open schedule, but put God first. That is the greatest thing we can do for our families at the beginning of the week, and is truly what it means to be human.
In closing, I would like to retract my earlier words and reiterate my recommendation to all of you. When naming a boy, Joseph who became second only to the Pharaoh of Egypt is a good choice, but Joseph, Mary’s husband, is also recommended. Jacob’s son, Joseph, would have viewed the glory of Egypt from the royal palace. About 1800 years later, Mary’s husband, Joseph, kept his family alive in that Egypt by working up a sweat. There is no superiority in what they have accomplished before God. Joseph was a quiet, inconspicuous man. But we have never known a man as loving and courageous as he.
