「そのころ、イスラエルには王がなく、それぞれ自分の目に正しいとすることを行っていた」（士師記１７章６節）
「自分の目に正しいこと」とは一見、なんとも頼もしい言葉ですが、ここには大きな問題があります。その問題とは、果たしてその「自分の目」は本当に正しいのかということです。「自らこそが正しい」と主張する者の集まりがいつまでも平和を保てるはずもなく・・・。

士師記：なくしてはならない危機感

私達はこれまで創世記、出エジプト記、レビ記、民数記、申命記、ヨシュア記を見てまいりました。神様が初めに造られた人間、アダムとイブから人はその数を増やし、その中からイスラエル民族があらわれました。神様は彼らと共に歩み、彼らを通して人の歴史に介入されました。そのイスラエル民族に対して神様はかねてからカナンと言う乳と蜜の流れる地に導かれるという約束をなさり、先週みましたヨシュア記においてはそのリーダー、ヨシュアを先頭にこのカナンの地を征服していったことをお話しました。
ヨシュアはその信仰によりイスラエルの民を治め、カナン入国とその地の領土確保をしつつ、「その土地の諸々の神々と決して妥協をするな！」と民に語ってきました。そのような意味で彼は常に危機感をもって、民に注意をうながし、彼らを励ましてきたリーダーだったということを先週はお話ししました。そして、ヨシュアがそのような厳しい言葉を言い続けたということには、そうせねばイスラエルの民達自身が滅びてしまうという深刻、かつ確かな理由があったということをお話ししました。そして、今日お話しますのはそのヨシュアなき後のイスラエルのことなのです。
カナンに住むことにより、彼らの生活はそれまで遊牧を中心としていたものから、一つ所に定住し、農耕生活をするというものに変わっていき、農耕をするからには、豊作が求められ、彼らはカナンにいた先住民の農耕方法を取り入れていきました。しかし、それはイコール、その先住民の農耕の中心にあった諸々のまじないや人の手で作られた神々を生活の中に受け入れることであり、やがて彼らは偶像崇拝へと陥っていきました。
ヨシュアはかつて彼らに何度も言っていたのです。11それゆえ、あなたがたは深く慎んで、あなたがたの神、主を愛さなければならない。12しかし、あなたがたがもしひるがえって、これらの国民の、生き残って、あなたがたの中にとどまる者どもと親しくなり、これと婚姻し、ゆききするならば、13あなたがたは、しかと知らなければならない。あなたがたの神、主は、もはや、これらの国民をあなたがたの前から、追い払うことをされないであろう。彼らは、かえって、あなたがたのわなとなり、網となり、あなたがたのわきに、むちとなり、あなたがたの目に、とげとなって、あなたがたはついに、あなたがたの神、主が賜わったこの良い地から、滅びうせるであろう。（ヨシュア記２３章１１節－１３節）
このところには近隣の民達がイスラエルの「わな」となり、「網」となり、「むち」となり、「とげ」となると書かれています。そして、まさしく、この士師記はイスラエルの民がその罠にはまり、綱にからまりつき、鞭打たれ、棘が突き刺さるようなことを何度も繰り返したことが書かれているのです。そして、それらの発端として、このヨシュア亡き後の時代について士師記１７章６節はこう記しています「そのころ、イスラエルには王がなく、それぞれ自分の目に正しいとすることを行っていた」
「自分の目に正しいこと」とは一見、なんとも頼もしい言葉ですが、ここには大きな問題があります。その問題とは、果たしてその「自分の目」は本当に正しいのかということです。「自らこそが正しい」と主張する者の集まりがいつまでも平和を保てるはずもなく、それぞれがその時の気分によって生活習慣を決め、やがてすぐにカナンの地にあった神々・世俗文化の中に埋没していくようになったのです。そして、もはやこれ以上、落ちることはないだろうというほどに最悪な状況に彼らは陥っていったのです。まさしくそれはイスラエル民族が失われるか、保たれるかというような危機的な状況でした。
その彼らはこれから後、長い間、あるパターンの繰り返しを行います。すなわち信仰を捨てて、異教の偶像礼拝に陥り、外敵によって力を失い、落ちるところまで落ちて、そうなってから神に助けを求め、神様は彼らを憐れみ、再び、立ち上がっていくというパターンで、そうならないために神は「さばきつかさ」という救助者を起こしてイスラエルを助けるというもので、この士師記にはそんなさばきづかさが１４名、出てくるのです（士師記３章９節）。
さばきづかさとは一時的に民の先頭に立ち、イスラエルを守り、またまとめるために生きたリーダーでした。その傾向として、さばきつかさがいる間はいいのですが、彼らがいなくなるとイスラエルはまた世と妥協し、神を捨て、偶像礼拝とそれに伴う生活習慣に同化していき、それにより彼らの生活そのものがまたどん底に落ちていくというようなことが実に４００年もの間、繰り返されました。
今日、この士師記に記されている全てのさばきづかさを見ていく時間はありません。そこで今朝は二人のさばきづかさを比較することにより、当時のイスラエルに一番、必要だったことを、ひいては今を生きる私達に必要なことを見ていきたいと思います。今朝、取り上げたい二人のさばきづかさとは、まずサムソン、そして、ギデオンです。
サムソン
実は私達は男子会でこのサムソンを取り上げて毎月、学んでいます。彼のうちに男として学ぶべきものがたくさん含まれているからです。その詳細を今日はお話しませんが、彼の生き方の一つの特徴に目を向けたいと思います。
サムソンは神様によって聖別されて生まれてき、神様はこのサムソンに普通の人が持ち得ない怪力をお与えになり、２０年の間、彼はイスラエルを導きます。「サムソナイト」という旅行鞄のメーカーがありますが、その名前はこの強いサムソンのように、少々のことでは壊れないというところからきたと言われています。
しかしながら、このサムソンは男女の情愛に過剰に惹かれる男でありました。その情愛を押さえることができずに、彼は本来イスラエルの敵であるペリシテ人の女を妻として迎えますが、自らの心にある鬱憤により結局、この妻を失います。彼の理解し難い突飛な言動はイスラエルの民とペリシテ人との間の紛争にまで発展しますが、彼の驚くべき怪力ゆえにペリシテ人が千人かかっても彼を打ち負かすことができないばかりか、サムソンはその怪力を用いて、一人で彼らを蹴散らしてしまいます。
そんなサムソンは妻を失った後、遊女、デリラにその情愛を注ぎます。力ではかなわないことを知っているペリシテ人はこのデリラのもとにいき、どうしたら彼を捕らえることができるのかをサムソンから聞きだすようにと報奨金の約束と共に裏工作をします。デリラは手を変え、品を変え、どうにかしてサムソンから聞きだそうとしますが、なかなか彼は真実を話さず、彼は三度、彼女をあざむきますが、最後に彼はその情愛に負け、全てを打ち明けます（士師記１６章１５節‐１７節）
今日も女性を政府の要人に近づかせてスキャンダルを起こしたり、必要な機密情報を得ようとする策略があり、それを「ハニートラップ：甘い罠」と呼んでいますが、サムソンもこのハニートラップにひっかかったのです。
彼は結局、自分の弱点を彼女に語り、彼女はそれをペリシテ人に語り、サムソンは捕らえられ、目をえぐり出されてしまいます。彼は圧倒的な強さをもちながら、ペリシテ人の前に敗北したのです。サムソンは自分に与えられた顕著な力を過信し、自分が今、どんな状況におり、何をすべきなのか、自分の言動がどのような結末を生むのか、完全に危機感というものを失っていたのです。これがサムソンです。次にもう一人のギデオンをみましょう。
ギデオン
ギデオンについては士師記の６章から書かれています。その時代、イスラエルの民は主の前に悪を行ったので、神様は彼らを七年の間、ミデアン人の手に渡されたという言葉でこの章は始まります。
その時、イスラエルはこの無数のミデアン人の襲来を度々受け、その土地は荒され、略奪され、非常に衰えていました。その時に、彼らは主に呼ばわりました。度々、お話しましたようにこれがイスラエルの民のパターンです。彼らは何度も堕落と救済を繰り返します。
そのような時に神がさばきづかさとして選んだのがギデオンでした。まさしく国が危急存亡の時に選ばれたこのギデオンですが、神からの使命を受けた時、彼はミデアン人を恐れ、酒ぶねに隠れていました。彼は自分の無力を知り、常に自分は敵の前にいるのだという危機意識を持っていました。どちらかというと、その時の危機意識は過剰で、当初彼は臆病となってしまっていたのですが。
そんな彼もいよいよミデアン人と戦う時がやってきました。その時について聖書はこのように記しています。士師記７章１節‐８節を読みましょう。
1さてエルバアルと呼ばれるギデオンおよび彼と共にいたすべての民は朝早く起き、ハロデの泉のほとりに陣を取った。ミデアンびとの陣は彼らの北の方にあり、モレの丘に沿って谷の中にあった。2主はギデオンに言われた、「あなたと共におる民はあまりに多い。ゆえにわたしは彼らの手にミデアンびとをわたさない。おそらくイスラエルはわたしに向かってみずから誇り、『わたしは自身の手で自分を救ったのだ』と言うであろう。3それゆえ、民の耳に触れ示して、『だれでも恐れおののく者は帰れ』と言いなさい」。こうしてギデオンは彼らを試みたので、民のうち帰った者は二万二千人あり、残った者は一万人であった。
4主はまたギデオンに言われた、「民はまだ多い。彼らを導いて水ぎわに下りなさい。わたしはそこで、あなたのために彼らを試みよう。わたしがあなたに告げて『この人はあなたと共に行くべきだ』と言う者は、あなたと共に行くべきである。またわたしがあなたに告げて『この人はあなたと共に行ってはならない』と言う者は、だれも行ってはならない」。5そこでギデオンが民を導いて水ぎわに下ると、主は彼に言われた、「すべて犬のなめるように舌をもって水をなめる者はそれを別にしておきなさい。またすべてひざを折り、かがんで水を飲む者もそうしなさい」。6そして手を口にあてて水をなめた者の数は三百人であった。残りの民はみなひざを折り、かがんで水を飲んだ。7主はギデオンに言われた、「わたしは水をなめた三百人の者をもって、あなたがたを救い、ミデアンびとをあなたの手にわたそう。残りの民はおのおのその家に帰らせなさい」。
8そこで彼はかの三百人を留めおき、残りのイスラエルびとの手から、つぼとラッパを取り、民をおのおのその天幕に帰らせた。時にミデアンびとの陣は下の谷の中にあった。
その時、イスラエルと対峙していた敵、ミデアン人の数は１３万５千人だったと言われていますから、３万３０００人のイスラエルの軍隊でもその力の差は歴然としています。しかし、神様はギデオンと共にあったこの３万３０００人の軍隊を１万人に減らします。「恐れおののく者」はその場から帰らせたからです。
常識で考えたら、この戦の勝敗ははっきりしています。しかしながら、神様はこの軍隊をさらに減らしました。すなわち、この１万人をハロデの泉に連れて行き、手で水をすくって飲んだ３００人以外の者達、すなわち犬のように泉に顔をつけて飲んだ９７００人は帰らせたのです。
彼らは喉が渇いていたのでしょう。多くの者達は周りに潜んでいるかもしれない敵のことを忘れ、犬のように顔を水面に沈めたのです。しかし、少数の者たちは周りに注意を払いながら、顔をあげ手で水をすくって飲んだのです。すなわち、神様は自分たちは今、敵の前にいるのだという危機感を持っている者達だけをその戦いに用いられたということです。そして、驚くべき事にこの３００人は１３万５千人もいるミデアン人に勝利したのです。
サムソンには確かに大力がありました。それは驚くべき力でした。しかし、その力がありながらも彼には危機意識がなく、簡単に「わな」にかかり、「網」をかけられ、「むち」を受け、最後には「とげ」が刺されました。それに対してギデオンは臆病かと思われるほどに危機意識をもっており、その危機意識をもった者達と共に勝利をしました。サムソンは強いのにもかかわらず敗北し、ギデオンは弱いのにもかかわらず、勝利をしたのです。
皆さん、この二人のさばきづかさの比較はこの後のイスラエルの現状にそのままあてはまりました。彼らはこの後にいつも自らが何に向き合っているのか、どんな現状にあるのかということを忘れて、簡単に敵に屈してしまい、落ちるところまで落ちていきます。しかし、彼らがしっかりと自らの現状を知り、そのところで神に助けを求めていくのなら、弱く小さな彼らであっても圧倒的な勝利をしていくのです。これがイスラエルという国の歴史です。
ギデオンの１５０年後に、さばきづかさの時代が終わった後にイスラエル二代目の王となりましたダビデは国が戦において連戦連勝であった時に、自分の部下の妻バテシバと姦淫の罪を犯しました。それは彼が危機感を失った日々に起きたということを私達は知らなければなりません。
そのバテシバによって生まれたダビデの子、イスラエル三代目の王、ソロモンに神は希に見る知恵と富を与え、彼はその通り賢く、無比の富を得ましたが、そのような安定の中に身を置き、危機感を失い、多くの異教の妻や妾を得、それがゆえにまことの神を見失っていきました。
ソロモンから約４００年経った時代を生きた預言者エゼキエルも当時のイスラエルについてこう記しています。エゼキエル１３章８節-１６節を読みましょう。8それゆえ、主なる神はこう言われる、「あなたがたはむなしいことを語り、偽りの物を見るゆえ、わたしはあなたがたを罰すると主なる神は言われる。9わたしの手は、むなしい幻を見、偽りの占いを言う預言者に敵対する。彼らはわが民の会に臨まず、イスラエルの家の籍にしるされず、イスラエルの地に、はいることができない。そしてあなたがたはわたしが主なる神であることを知るようになる。10彼らはわが民を惑わし、平和がないのに『平和』と言い、また民が塀を築く時、これらの預言者たちは水しっくいをもってこれを塗る。11それゆえ、水しっくいを塗る者どもに『これはかならずくずれる』と言え。これに大雨が注ぎ、ひょうが降り、あらしが吹く。12そして塀がくずれる時、人々はあなたがたに向かって、『あなたがたが塗った水しっくいはどこにあるか』と言わないであろうか。
エゼキエルの時代の預言者達は決して平和とは言えない世界に行きながら、「平和だ、平和だ」と言っていたというのです。彼らは預言者としてその時代を見極め、そこから自分たちが置かれている状況をしっかりと認識し、それを民に伝えるべき者達であるのに、彼らには全く危機感がないと神様は嘆いているというのです。これらの預言者は民が壁を築くとすぐに水でべちょべちょしたようなしっくいでそれを塗ってしまうというのです。しかし、それでは見た目はいいかもしれませんが、簡単に崩れてしまうというのです。
イエス様の弟子達は自分たちが置かれている危機感をしっかりと把握せずに、大言壮語をしますが、いざイエス様が捕らわれるというような危機が彼らを襲いますと蜘蛛の子を散らすように逃げていきました。
皆さん、私達は今、自分が生きているこの世界をどのように受け止めているでしょうか。そこに危機意識を感じているでしょうか。確かに自分は敵の前に生きているのだという自覚があるでしょうか。こう言うことによって、皆さんの不安をかきたてようというのではありません。ただ、私達はイスラエルが歩んできた道を知る時に、彼らと同じ過ちを犯すべきではないと思うのですが、いかがでしょうか。
毎週そうしていますようにこの士師記は今日で終わります。１４人のさばきづかさによって導かれた４００年にもおよぶ、各々が自分の目に正しいと思われることを行った時代はイスラエル史上、暗黒の歴史として刻まれました。そして、その暗黒の時代となってしまった理由は今日、お話ししたとおりです。
私達は主にあって「いつも喜び、絶えず祈り、全てのことについて感謝」して生きるべきです（Ⅰテサロニケ５章１６節-１８節）。しかし、同時に常に心の中に危機意識、私は常に敵の前に立っているのだという意識をもっていなければなりません。いつも顔をつけて泉の水の飲むのではなく、今、自分はどのような状況にあり、何に直面しているのか、そう辺りを見回しつつ水を飲むべき姿勢が大切です。このことがイスラエルの行く末を決めたように、このことが私達の人生をも決めていくのです。お祈りしましょう。
Don't lose your sense of crisis

So far, we have looked at Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,Numbers, Deuteronomy and Joshua. The number of people increased starting from Adam and Eve who were created by God in the beginning. From them, the Israelites were born. God walked with them and had a relationship throughout history with them. God had promised to the Israelites to lead then to Canaan, the land flowing with milk and honey. Last week I talked about the Israelites who had conquered the land of Canaan led by Joshua.
Joshua ruled the people of Israel through his faith and told them not to do anything with other gods while entering and securing the land of Canaan. Because of that, Joshua was a leader who always warned the people the danger of foreign gods. What Joshua did was very good because if he didn't give them such a strict instruction to keep, the Israelites might have been destroyed. Today I will talk about Israel after the death of Joshua.
Living in Canaan, they began to settle down and started farming instead of having a nomadic life. Since they needed to have good harvests, they adapted the Canaanites' way of farming. But it meant that they also adopted their use of charms and gods created by man since they were the core of Canaanites agriculture. Those things led the Israelite into idol worshiping.
Joshua warned them many times.”11So be very careful to love the LORD your God.
12“But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them,13then you may be sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the LORD your God has given you.”(Joshua 23;11-13)
It is written in the Bible that the people living around Israel will become snares, traps, whips and thorns for them. Judges records the Israelites having been snared, having been trapped, having been whipped and having been stuck by thorns many times. Judges chapter 17 verse 6 records the background of the Israelites after the death of Joshua. “6 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit. “
“Everyone did as they saw fit”. It may sound good but actually it was a big problem. The problem is whether our eyes are really accurate. Since everyone said they were right, of course they couldn't keep peace with each other. Each one decided their own lifestyles by their feelings. Soon, their lives were buried in the Canaanites' secular culture and their gods. Then they fell into the bottom of the worst situation. It was the critical moment for the Israelites if they could survive or not.
They repeated a certain pattern for a long period of time. It was a pattern that led them to give up their faith and started worshiping idols. Then they lost their power by the outside enemies and fell into worse situations. Finally they begged God for help. God showed mercy on them and helped them stand up again. So God gave the Israelites judges so that they could lead them in to the right direction and be saved from there. There were fourteen judges. (Judges 3:9)
A judge was a leader who God appointed to lead the people of Israel and protect them. While the Israelites had a judge to lead them, they were doing fine but when they lost a judge, they compromised and forgot God. They worshiped idols and followed other nation's lifestyles and culture. By doing this, their lives fell to the bottom. They repeated the same thing for four hundred years.
We don't have enough time to look up all judges in the Bible this morning. So I will choose two judges to compare and find out what was important for Israel at that time and for us even now. The judges I want to look up are Samson and Gideon.
Samson
Actually, now at men' fellowship, we are studying about Samson every month. The reason why we chose him was that Samson has a typical trait that men should be aware of. I will not talk about the details today, but we will focus on one characteristic of his way of living.
Samson was set apart sacred from birth. God gave him super strength that nobody could ever have. He led Israel for 20 years. Samsonite, the brand name of a suitcase was named after this man because they want to show that their suitcase is strong and won't be broken like Samson.
However, he was the man who was excessively attracted to woman. He couldn't control his emotions and married the Philistine woman who was an enemy of Israel. Later he lost his wife because of his anger. His terrible words and behavior which, was hard to understand, led to trouble between Israel and Philistine. But even one thousand Philistines couldn't beat Samson because of his amazing strength. Not only that but he scattered them using his super strength.
After losing his wife, Samson fell in love with Delilah, a prostitute. Philistines who knew that they couldn't overpower Samson came to Delilah to ask her to find out a way to seize him. They promised her money if she was successful. So she tried every trick to get the secret of his power. But he wouldn't tell the truth easily and deceived her three times. But at last, he gave in to her and told her everything. (Judge 16:15-17)
Even today, we hear about tricks to create a scandal or to get important secret information by sending a woman to a VIP in the government. We call it “honey trap”. Samson was also trapped by it.
He told her his weakness. And she told his secret to a Philistine. As a result, Samson was seized and his eyes were gouged out. Even though he had super strength, he was defeated by the Philistines. Samson was overconfident in his power which was given by God, and didn't know how or what he should do with it. He completely lost his focus to prepare for a crisis. This is who Samson is. Next, let's see Gideon, another judge.
Gideon
It is written about Gideon in Judges from chapter 6. This chapter starts with a sentence that the Israelites did evil in God's eyes, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of Midianites.
Israel had been attacked by Midianites many times, so their land was getting impoverished by being devastated and being looted. Then they cried out to the Lord for help. As I told you, this is the pattern of the history of Israelites. They repeated corruption and were delivered again and again.
Gideon was chosen by God as a judge at that time. It was a time of crisis for the Israelites. When he was called by God, he hid in a wine press being scared of the Midianites. Since he knew he was weak, he always paid attention to his enemy. He was a coward and was always afraid of the enemy in the beginning.
Then the time had come to fight with the Midianites. The Bible wrote about it. Let's read Judges chapter 7 verse 1 to 8.
“1 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. 2 The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands, In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her, announce now to the people, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4But the LORD said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will shift them for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the LORD told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel down to drink.”6Three hundred men lapped with their hands to their mouths. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7The LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others man go, each to his own place.”8So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.”
The number of Midianites who camped against the Israelites were one hundred thirty five thousand. Even if Israel army fought with thirty three thousand people, the result would be obvious. But God decreased the number of people with Gideon from thirty three thousand to ten thousand. It is because he sent home those who trembled with fear.
Using common sense, the result of this battle is obvious. However, God decreased the number of people more. He took ten thousand people to the spring of Harod and sent home nine thousand seven hundred people who drank water like a dog, but kept the other three hundred people who knelt down to drink.
They must have been thirsty. So many of them didn't pay attention to the enemy, who might have been hidden around them. But a small number of people knelt down and drank water with their hands while raising up their heads and paying attention around them. It means that God uses people who are always aware of their enemies. To our surprise, those three hundred people beat the Midianites, who numbered one hundred thirty five thousand people.
Samson surely had super strength. It was an astonishing power. However, in spite of his strength, he was easily snared, was trapped, was whipped, and was struck by thorns because he didn't have any sense of crisis at all. On the other hand, Gideon was very alert to the crisis. He sometimes seemed to be too timid, but got the victory with other people who were also alert to their enemies. Samson lost in spite of his strength but Gideon won although he was weak.
Brothers and sisters, the comparison of these two judges illustrates the history of Israel.
Later, as the Israelites forgot their critical situation and danger, they gave in to their enemy easily and fell to the bottom. However, when they realized who they really were and asked God for help, they could sweep to victory in spite of their weakness. This is the history of Israel.
One hundred fifty years after Gideon, David who became the second king of Israel after the era of Judges, committed the sin of adultery with Bathsheba who was the wife of his general, while Israel had a succession of victories. We have to know that he made a mistake when he lost his sense of crisis.
Solomon, the third king of Israel, was born as the child of King David and Bathsheba. God gave him unusual wisdom and wealth. So he became wise and gained matchless wealth. His life was so stable that he didn’t pay attention to his crisis. He also gained many pagan wives and mistresses but they led him to lose his faith in God.
Four hundred years later, the prophet Ezekiel wrote about Israel at that time. Let's read Ezekiel chapter 13 verse 8 to 16. 8“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because of your false words and lying visions, I am against you, declares the Sovereign LORD.9My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.
10“‘Because they lead my people astray, saying, “Peace,” when there is no peace, and because, when a flimsy wall is built, they cover it with whitewash,11therefore tell those who cover it with whitewash that it is going to fall. Rain will come in torrents, and I will send hailstones hurtling down, and violent winds will burst forth.12When the wall collapses, will people not ask you, “Where is the whitewash you covered it with?”
13“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: In my wrath I will unleash a violent wind, and in my anger hailstones and torrents of rain will fall with destructive fury.14I will tear down the wall you have covered with whitewash and will level it to the ground so that its foundation will be laid bare. When it[a]falls, you will be destroyed in it; and you will know that I am the LORD.15So I will spend my wrath against the wall and against those who covered it with whitewash. I will say to you, “The wall is gone and so are those who whitewashed it,16those prophets of Israel who prophesied to Jerusalem and saw visions of peace for her when there was no peace, declares the Sovereign LORD.”’
Prophets at the time of Ezekiel said “peace” although there was no peace. He said that God grieved over the prophets because they had no sense of crisis. As prophets, they should have understood the critical situation of Israel and should have warned the people of Israel. What they did was like the prophets who painted the wall with white wash when the Israelites built a flimsy wall. It looks good on the outside but it is easy to collapse.
Jesus' disciples couldn't understand their circumstances and boasted how eager they followed Jesus. But at the time of crisis when Jesus was caught, they ran away in all directions.
Brothers and sisters, what do you think about the world you live in now? Do you have your sense of crisis to the world? Do you realize that you live among enemies? I don't want to increase your anxiety. But I think that we shouldn't make the same mistakes that the Israelites did after learning about their history. What do you think?
I will finish Judges today as I looked up one book of the Bible at a time on each Sunday. For four hundred years while fourteen judges led Israel, and while everyone did what they saw fit, it was the darkest period of time in their history. This is the reason why Israel came to have such a dark age.
We should live like Christ, ”Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances” (as it is written in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)But at the same time, we need to have a sense of crisis in our hearts. It means that we always aware of our enemies. Instead of putting your face into water of spring to lap, it is important for you to drink water carefully while judging your situation and looking around you. This will lead our life like Gideon and his men did for the future of the Israelites. Let's pray.

２）士師記の時代には王がなく、１４人のさばきづかさが国を導きました。その中の一人、サムソン（士師記１３章‐１６章）には常人には得られない怪力が与えられました。彼はこの怪力を有効に用いましたか。彼に欠けていたことは何だったのでしょうか。
３）上記、サムソン以外にギデオン（士師記６章‐７章）というさばきづかさがいました。彼は常に自らとイスラエルは敵の前にあるという敵前感をもっていました。一見、臆病に思えるギデオンはイスラエルを守りました。今日、私達は何に対して敵前感をもつべきでしょうか。
４）エゼキエルは彼が生きたイスラエルについて、預言者たちが「平和がないのに『平和』と言って、民を惑わしている」（エゼキエル１３章１０節）と書いています。リーダーが進むべき道程の現状をよく知り、常に敵前感を持つことはなぜ大切なのですか。
５）イスラエルの歩みはこの後、この敵前感があるか否かで大きく変わっていきました。あなたはギデオンと共に戦って勝利を得た３００人の兵士のように敵前感をもって日々、歩んでいますか。あなたが意識すべきことをもう一度、確認しましょう。
