これまでパウロが獄中で書いた幾つかの手紙を見てまいりましたが、このピリピ人への手紙も彼が獄中でピリピという町にある教会宛に書いたものです。ピリピの教会はかつてパウロが第二回伝道旅行をしていた時に訪れて、そこで紫布の商人ルデヤや看守らが信仰をもち（使徒１６章１２節－３４節）、ヨーロッパにおける最初の教会となりました。

このピリピの教会はパウロの伝道を色々なかたちでサポートしており（４章１６節）、パウロがローマの獄に捕らえられていると聞き、贈り物を持たせてパウロを慰問するためにエパフロデトという人を遣わしました（４章１８節）。しかしこのエパフロデトはローマについてから病気になり（２章２７節）、治療としばしの静養をし、幸いにも回復しました。そのエパフロデトを再びピリピに送り返すに当たり、パウロが託した手紙がこのピリピ人の手紙でした。そこにはピリピの教会の人達がその始まりから信仰に立って良いわざをし続けていることに対するパウロの感謝が記され、同時に、その教会の中に存在していましたいくつかの問題について言及し、訓戒を与えています。

今日はこのところから三つのことを見ていきます。まず最初に「捕らえられている」ということです。

捕らえられている 

ピリピの手紙は「喜びの手紙」であるとよく言われます。なぜなら、パウロは繰り返し、この手紙の中で「喜び」を書き記しており、それは彼が他の諸教会に送った手紙の中にはあまり見受けられないことであったからです。彼はこのような言葉をまず、開口一番に記しました。

3 わたしはあなたがたを思うたびごとに、わたしの神に感謝し、4 あなたがた一同のために祈るとき、いつも喜びをもって祈り、5 あなたがたが最初の日から今日に至るまで、福音にあずかっていることを感謝している（ピリピ１章３節―５節）で始まり、さらに・・・

 

25 こう確信しているので、わたしは生きながらえて、あなたがた一同のところにとどまり、あなたがたの信仰を進ませ、その喜びを得させようと思う（ピリピ１章２５節）。

 

17そして、たとい、あなたがたの信仰の供え物をささげる祭壇に、わたしの血をそそぐことがあっても、わたしは喜ぼう。あなたがた一同と共に喜ぼう。18同じように、あなたがたも喜びなさい。わたしと共に喜びなさい（ピリピ２章１７節ー１８節）。

 

あなたがたは、主にあっていつも喜びなさい。繰り返して言うが、喜びなさい（ピリピ４章４節）。

 

このようにこのピリピ書は喜びで満ちています。しかも、その手紙が獄中で囚われの身でありながらの喜びであり、彼は自分で喜んでいると同時に、あなたがたも喜びなさいと繰り返し勧めているのです。そこには、内なる喜びが溢れてきて、それを抑えきれずに何度もくどいほどに他の人達にも喜ぶことを勧めているパウロの姿があります。そして、その喜びには理由があるようです。

一つ分かることは、この喜びは彼のポジティブな、前向きな心構えにあったということではなく、彼が書き記したピリピ書の言葉を注意深く見ますのなら「主にあって」ということが彼の喜びの原因でありました。これに類する言葉はたとえばこのピリピ書に加えてⅡテサロニケにもあの有名な言葉として記されています『いつも喜んでいなさい。絶えず祈りなさい。すべての事について、感謝しなさい。これがキリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに求めておられることである』（Ⅰテサロニケ５章１６節‐１８節）。

実はこの「主にあって」とか「キリスト・イエスにあって」という「in the Lord, in Christ
Jesus」という言葉はパウロの手紙の中に度々出てくる彼独特のものなのです。それでは、この「主にあって、キリスト・イエスにあって」ということはどういうことなのでしょうか。

手がかりとなる言葉をパウロはピリピ書３章にこのように記しています。12わたしがすでにそれを得たとか、すでに完全な者になっているとか言うのではなく、ただ捕えようとして追い求めているのである。そうするのは、キリスト・イエスによって捕えられているからである。13兄弟たちよ。わたしはすでに捕えたとは思っていない。ただこの一事を努めている。すなわち、後のものを忘れ、前のものに向かってからだを伸ばしつつ、14目標を目ざして走り、キリスト・イエスにおいて上に召して下さる神の賞与を得ようと努めているのである（ピリピ３章１２節－１４節）。 

パウロはここで「わたしはキリストによって、捕えられている」と記しています。これはパウロの揺るぐことのない確信です。パウロは自分の力でイエス様に必死にしがみついているのではなくて、私がイエス様によって捕らえていてるのだと言うのです。

それではイエス様の何がパウロを捕らえているのでしょうか。そうです、それはキリストの「愛」が彼を捕らえているのです。この愛にパウロが捕らえられている限り、このキリストにあって、彼の心には喜びがあります。それは他の何をもっても得ることができないものであり、たとえそれが獄中であっても、その愛がある限り、私の心からこの喜びが奪われることはないというのです。彼の内なる喜びは彼の心から溢れ、彼はその喜びをもって、あなたたちも喜びなさい、繰り返して言いますが、喜びなさいと獄中から語りかけているのです。

パウロはこのキリストの愛についてローマ８章ではさらに力強く、こう書いています。

35 だれが、キリストの愛からわたしたちを離れさせるか。患難か、苦悩か、迫害か、飢えか、裸か、危難か、剣か。36 「わたしたちはあなたのために終日、死に定められており、ほふられる羊のように見られている」と書いてあるとおりである。37 しかし、わたしたちを愛して下さったかたによって、わたしたちは、これらすべての事において勝ち得て余りがある。38 わたしは確信する。死も生も、天使も支配者も、現在のものも将来のものも、力あるものも、39 高いものも深いものも、その他どんな被造物も、わたしたちの主キリスト・イエスにおける神の愛から、わたしたちを引き離すことはできないのである（ローマ８章３５節－３９節）。

 

このキリストの愛に捕らえられているから、彼は喜んだのです。ここで彼が言っている、患難、苦悩、迫害、飢え、裸、危難、剣とはまさしく、彼が獄にあって経験している全てなのです。まさしくパウロは明日にはほふられてしまうような羊のような状態にありながらも、キリストの愛ゆえに勝ち得て余りある彼の心からは喜びがあふれ出てきたのです。二つ目のことをお話しましょう。「追い求めているが、いまだ捕らえていない」ということです。

追い求めているが、いまだ捕らえていない 

12わたしがすでにそれを得たとか、すでに完全な者になっているとか言うのではなく、ただ捕えようとして追い求めているのである。そうするのは、キリスト・イエスによって捕えられているからである。13兄弟たちよ。わたしはすでに捕えたとは思っていない。ただこの一事を努めている。すなわち、後のものを忘れ、前のものに向かってからだを伸ばしつつ、14目標を目ざして走り、キリスト・イエスにおいて上に召して下さる神の賞与を得ようと努めているのである（ピリピ３章１２節－１４節）。 

パウロはこの手紙の中で「すでに完全な者になっていると言うのではない」「すでに捕らえたとは思っていない」と書いています。彼は捕らえようとして追い求めているというのです。そのために努めているというのです。

ここで確認しておかなければなりませんことは、私達がこれまで何度もみてきました、「私達が救われたのは私達の努力によるのではない」ということと、このところでパウロが言っている「神の賞与を得ようと努めている」ということの違いです。

私達は既にイエス・キリストを信じる、その信仰によって神様の前に義とされています。それは私達の努力によって獲得できるものではなくて、全く神様から私達に与えられているあわれみであり、恵みなのだということをこれまで何度もお話してきました。そして、そのことは私たちが神様を捕らえたというのではなく、あちらが私たちを捕らえてくださっているということなのです。しかし、たとえ私たちが神様によって捕らえられていたとしても、私達は完全な者になっているのではなくて、私達は今も捕らえようとして追い求めているのです。いったい、それはどういうことなのでしょうか。神様はかつてモーセを通してイスラエルの民にこう語りかけました。

『4イスラエルよ聞け。われわれの神、主は唯一の主である。5あなたは心をつくし、精神をつくし、力をつくして、あなたの神、主を愛さなければならない』（申命記６章４節－５節）。

 

これは神様からイスラエルへの命令です。心を尽くし、精神を尽くし、力を尽くして、あなたの神を愛せよということです。そして、その根拠はどこにあるかといいますと、その後にこう書かれています。

 

『6あなたはあなたの神、主の聖なる民である。あなたの神、主は地のおもてのすべての民のうちからあなたを選んで、自分の宝の民とされた。7主があなたがたを愛し、あなたがたを選ばれたのは、あなたがたがどの国民よりも数が多かったからではない。あなたがたはよろずの民のうち、もっとも数の少ないものであった。8ただ主があなたがたを愛し、またあなたがたの先祖に誓われた誓いを守ろうとして、主は強い手をもってあなたがたを導き出し、奴隷の家から、エジプトの王パロの手から、あがない出されたのである』（申命記７章６節－８節）。

 ここには「主があなたがたを愛し」という言葉が二度、出てきます。イスラエルが愛されたのは彼らの数が多かったからではなく、ただ神のあわれみゆえに、神はイスラエルを愛されたのです。この神様からのイスラエルへの愛ゆえに、神はイスラエルに私を愛しなさいといわれているのです。

パウロはイエスの愛に捕らえられています。かつては罪の奴隷であった自分はキリストの十字架によって贖われてる、無条件の愛をいただいている。その愛に捕らえられている者は、自らもそのキリストの愛に応えるべく、捕らえようと生きるのです。そのところに立ち止まっているのではなくて、そこから後ろのものを忘れ、前のものにむかって、からだを伸ばしつつ、目標を目指して走り、キリスト・イエスにおいて上に召して下さる神の賞与を得ようと努めるているのです。その一事に私たちは今、努めているのです。

内村鑑三という人がいます。内村はあのクラーク博士で有名な札幌農学校、後の北海道大学の学生時代に洗礼を受けますが、自分の信仰について悩んでいました。そこでの回心は、多神教から一神教への回心にすぎず、十字架にかけられたキリストを信じるという人格的なものではなかったからでした。

 彼の結婚生活には問題があり、気性が激しい妻との関係がうまくいかず、逃げるようにして留学しますが、米国で回心を経験します。そのきっかけは彼が留学したアマスト大学の総長であったシーリーとの出会いによるもので、そこで内村はこのシーリーから「鉢植えの教え」という譬話を聞いたのでした。

 内村はキリスト信仰というものが皆目、分からず、自分はクリスチャンになっても何も変わっているように思えない、その愛において成長しているようにも見えない、事実、家庭は崩壊し、悲惨な現実を抱えながら日本を離れて、アメリカまで逃げるようにしてやって来たのです。そこで悶々と悩む内村に、シーリーは語りました。

 

「内村、君は君の内側だけを見るからいけない。君は君の外を見なければならない。なぜ自分を省みることを止めて、十字架の上に君の罪の身代わりとなられたイエスを仰ぎ見ないのか。君のしていることは、子供が植物を鉢に植えて、その成長を確かめようと、毎日その根を抜いてみるのと同じである。なぜ、その成長を神と日光とに委ね、安心して自分の成長を待たないのか」（内村鑑三、『クリスマス夜話・私の信仰の先生』）。

 私たちはいかがでしょうか。私たちも内村と同じ悩みを抱えることがありませんか。キリストの愛に応えるべく、生きようとしても行き詰まりを感じることがある。自分は本当に成長しているのだろうか、そもそも自分の信仰は本物なのだろうかと悩みつつ、しかもそこで少しも成長の実りを見出すことができず、むしろ色々な失敗を抱えていく中で、自分を情けなく思ってしまうのです。どうか覚えてください。私たちはキリストによって既に捕らえられている、既に私たちの上に神の光はサンサンと照っている。その光を仰ぐ、その光に向かってからだを伸ばすかのごとく、私たちを成長させてくださる神を見上げて、私たちは走るのです。この一事に努めるのです。パウロはコリント第一の手紙でも書いているではありませんか。

 

4すなわち、ある人は「わたしはパウロに」と言い、ほかの人は「わたしはアポロに」と言っているようでは、あなたがたは普通の人間ではないか。5アポロは、いったい、何者か。また、パウロは何者か。あなたがたを信仰に導いた人にすぎない。しかもそれぞれ、主から与えられた分に応じて仕えているのである。6わたしは植え、アポロは水をそそいだ。しかし成長させて下さるのは、神である。7だから、植える者も水をそそぐ者も、ともに取るに足りない。大事なのは、成長させて下さる神のみである。（コリント第一の手紙３章４節－７節）。

 よく自分の子供を見た人から「大きくなりましたね」といわれます。それはありがたい言葉なのですが、いつも一緒にいる者にはあまりピンと来ないものです。しかし、実際に子供たちはそう言われるように成長しているのです。私達も自分の信仰の成長ということを考えますと同じように、それが分からないというようなこともあるのかもしれません。しかし、私達は確かに成長するのです。そのために私達は前のものに向かって全身を伸ばしつつ、今日も明日も走るのです。三つ目のことをみましょう。それは「後ろのものを忘れ、前のものに向かって」ということです。

 後ろのものを忘れ、前のものに向かって

 

「前」という日本語ですが、「目：ま」と「辺：へ」が語源となっている言葉で、それは「目」の向いている方向のことを意味するそうです。神様は人の目を顔の上に二つ定めました。そこには不変の無言のメッセージがあります。そうです、人は前を向いて生きるように神は人を造られたのです。

 ソフトバンク社長の孫正義さんは自らの薄くなりつつある髪の毛を揶揄されて 「私の髪の毛が後退しているのではない。私が前進しているのである」という名言（めいげん）を残しました。私もこれから事あるたびにこの名言を大いに使わせていただこうと思っておりますが、孫さんはとても大切なことを言っています。

 

私達はいつも前を向いて、前に進むのです。私達には何をしても変えられないものがあります。それは「過去」です。起きた時と場所に戻ることは私達にはできません。私達は常に今、この瞬間も過去を後ろに置いて前を向いて生きているのです。

 

生物学には走性（そうせい）（English:
Taxis）という言葉があるそうです。これは自然界の動植物が外界のある刺激に対して一定方向にその向きを変える性質を意味する言葉で、例えば、魚が流れに逆らって泳ぐ走流性、ハエがある化学物質に対して示す化学走性、蚊のように一定の音に対して向かう走音性、ミミズが湿気を求めるような走湿性があります。しかし、その中で最も私達が身近で見るのは、植物が一斉に太陽に向かって伸びたり、昆虫が光に集まる走光性です。

 

私が何かの会議に出席しますと、そこでは様々な意見が出ます。時には一つのアジェンダに数時間がかかります。最初はそれぞれの意見が異なり、暗礁に乗り上げます。しかし、やがてそれが一つの方向性が見えてきて、最後にそれではその方向でいきましょうとまとまります。それまでの煮詰まった空気が、安堵に変わる瞬間です。

 

鮎も、ミミズも、蚊も、蛾も、そしてひまわりもその向かうべき方向が神様によって定められています。それは彼らの本能ですから、彼らは必ずやその定められてものに向かっていくことでしょう。しかし、何かしらの理由で彼らがその方向に向かうことが妨害されたら、彼らはきっとその生態に問題が出てくると思われます。よく庭掃除をしていて、大きな石をどけたら見つけたことがありませんか、光に向くことができずに、成長することも、実を実らせることもできずに細々となっている真っ白な植物の芽を。

 

この走光性というのは、文字通りこのパウロが今日の箇所で言っていることに合致します。私達、人には本来、向かうべき方向があるのです。それは過去ではないのです。明らかにそれは私達の前にあるのです。そして、それはキリストなのです。そもそも、私達はそのように造られているのに私達はその方向に向こうとはしないのです。そこから多くの問題が起きます。パウロはそこに向かうという、その一事を大切にしているのです。後ろのものを忘れ、前のものに全身を向けつつ、神がキリスト・イエスによって上へ召して、お与えくださる賞を得るために、目標を目指してひたすら走るのです。パウロはこのことについてさらに大胆にヘブル書の中で言っています。

 

1こういうわけで、わたしたちは、このような多くの証人に雲のように囲まれているのであるから、いっさいの重荷と、からみつく罪とをかなぐり捨てて、わたしたちの参加すべき競走を、耐え忍んで走りぬこうではないか。2信仰の導き手であり、またその完成者であるイエスを仰ぎ見つつ、走ろうではないか。彼は、自分の前におかれている喜びのゆえに、恥をもいとわないで十字架を忍び、神の御座の右に座するに至ったのである。3あなたがたは、弱り果てて意気そそうしないために、罪人らのこのような反抗を耐え忍んだかたのことを、思いみるべきである（へブル１２章１節－３節）。

 

主にある兄弟姉妹、いっさいの重荷とからみつく罪とをかなぐり捨てて、私たちの参加すべき、この道のりを耐え忍んで走りぬこうではありませんか。信仰の導き手であり、またその完成者であるイエスに向かい、イエスを仰ぎつつ、走ろうではありませんか。

今朝、皆さんの足にはからみつく罪がありませんか。まずいことになっていませんか。その足でこの新しい一週間を走りきることができますか。もし、それがあるのなら、今、この場所でそれをしっかりかなぐり捨てましょう。この一週間の私達各々が走りぬく行程を前にして、重荷を背負っていませんか。マラソンを走る人が背に荷物を背負っていますか。いいえ、そんなことはありえません。もし、その重荷があるのなら、今、このところでその荷をイエス様に委ねましょう。

今、皆さんは行き着くべきゴールが見えていますか。その方向がはっきりしていますか。今週もその行程を走りましょう。光に向かって走るように造られているのですから、既にその光を注いでくださっているお方を目指して走りましょう。私達自身、気がついていないかもしません、しかし、その道のりの中、神様は私達を成長させてくださるでしょう。このことを覚えてこの一週間を走るのです。そして、来週も同じようにその行程を走るのです。再来週も同じようにこの行程を走るのです。そして、その最後にはパウロがその晩年に愛弟子テモテに語ったと全く同じ言葉が私たちの人生、最後の言葉となるのです。

6わたしが世を去るべき時はきた。7わたしは戦いをりっぱに戦いぬき、走るべき行程を走りつくし、信仰を守りとおした。8今や、義の冠がわたしを待っているばかりである（テモテ第二の手紙４章６節－８節）。

私の知る限り、これ以上の生涯を私はどこを見回しても見出すことができません。皆さんはいかがでしょうか。お祈りしましょう。

 

Since I am Chained

(Book of Philippians)

 We have looked at several letters that Paul
have written in jail in past weeks.

This Letter of Philippians is also
written by Paul, in the jail, to the church in the town called Philippi.
Philippians church was the first church that was established in Europe when
Paul visited there on his second evangelical trip, where woman name Lydia, a
seller of purple , and jailor became the believers (Act 16; 12 – 34).

  Philippians church supported Paul's mission works
in various ways ( 4: 16). When they heard Paul was captured in the jail in
Rome, they send man named Epaphroditus with the gift to visit Paul (4:
18).  But when Epaphroditus arrived in
Rome, he became ill (2: 27). Fortunately, he recovered with the treatment and
the rest. This Letter to the Philippians, is the Letter that Paul entrusted in
Epaphroditus

care when Paul sent him back to the
Philippi. In this letter, Paul expressed his gratitude for the people of
Philippians church for doing their good deeds with earnest faith from
beginning, but at the same time, he mentioned and warned them that few problems
existed within the church.

  Today,
I want to look at three things from here. “ Chained “ is the topic that I want
to look at first. 

Chained:

 The Letter to the Philippians often is said to
be an “Letter of Rejoicing.” Because Paul repeatedly wrote “Rejoicing” within
this letter and because you will not find, hardly, this word in other letters
that Paul wrote to other churches. First thing he wrote are these words.

 It begins with,  I thank my God every time I remember you. In
all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your
partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. ( Philippians 1:
3-5) and further more he wrote, Convinced of this,
I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your
progress and joy in the faith. (Philippians 1: 25)

But even if I am being
poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice andservice coming from your
faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you
too should be glad and rejoice with me. (Philippians
2: 17 & 18)

 Rejoice in
the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! (Philippians 4: 4)

  As shown here, Letter of the Philippians are
filled with rejoicing. That is, he is rejoicing even though he is chained in
jail house, at same time, as he is rejoicing, he is repeatedly asking us to
rejoice also. In here, you can see the Paul, who is filled with gladness and
who can not hold it back any longer, is asking other people repeatedly to
rejoice too. And look as through, there is reason for rejoicing!

 One thing is for sure, that is, his rejoicing
did not come from his positive thinkingnor from his constructive mental
attitude. However, if you look carefully about the words he wrote in the Book
of Philippians, the words “in the Lord” are the cause for his rejoicing.
Similar verse is noted in the First Thessalonians, like in the Philippians,
that is, that famous words “ Be joyful always, pray continually; Give thanks
in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1
Thessalonians 5: 16-18) The words “In the Lord or in Christ Jesus” are the
Paul's own unique expression that appears often in his letters. Then what is
meant by “In the Lord or in Christ Jesus”?

 Paul noted the words of clues in third chapter
of Philippians. “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already
arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus
took hold of me.  Brothers and sisters, I
do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do:
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward
the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ
Jesus.” (Philippians 3: 12-14)

 Paul said in here that  “Christ Jesus took hold of me.” This
is the Paul's unshakable conviction. Paul is saying that the Jesus took hold of
him, instead of Paul himself desperately holding onto the Jesus with all his
strengths.

  Then how did Jesus took hold of Paul? Yes, It
was Jesus' love that took hold of him. He will have rejoicing in his heart as
long as he is held on by this love in Christ Jesus. You can not acquire it by
anything else. He is saying that nobody can

take way this rejoicing from my heart
as long as this love exist, even in the jail house.  His inner happiness is over flowing from his
heart.  For he is saying to us to
rejoice, again to rejoice; from inside the jail house.

 In Roman chapter 8, Paul wrote about Jesus'
love, emphasizing:

Who shall separate us from the love
of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or
danger or sword? As it is written,

“For your
sake we face death all day long;we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in
all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all
creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ
Jesus our Lord. (
Roman 8; 35-39)

 He was rejoicing because he was taken by the
Jesus love. All those things that he mentioned such as trouble, hardship,
persecution, famine, nakedness, danger & sword are all things that truly he
had experienced in the jail. Because of the love of Christ Jesus, the happiness
have over flown from his heart, even though, he was in such condition like a
sheep that to be slaughter soon.

Lets go on to second topic, that is,
“Seeking but not yet take hold of it”

Seeking
but yet to have take hold of it:

 Not that I have already obtained all this, or
have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which
Christ Jesus took hold of me.  Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself
yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and
straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the
goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 12: 12-14)

 In this letter, Paul wrote that “Not that I
have already arrived at my goal” and“Yet to have taken hold of it.”  He is saying in here that he is seeking it in
order to take hold of it. He is trying hard to accomplish it.

 The thing that we have to verify here is the
deference between what Paul is saying that is, “I press on to win the prize of
God in Christ Jesus” and what we have looked at many times until now, that is,
“It is not through our own effort that we were saved.”

 We have already became righteousness before
the Lord through the faith that believes in Jesus Christ. We have talk about it
many times that we can not acquire

it by our own effort but only through
the God's compassion and blessing that is given to us. And that means God takes
hold of us instead of we take hold of God.

However, even though we have taken
hold by God, we have not become a complete person, for we are still pursuing to
get hold of God. What in the earth does it means? Once, God said to the people
of Israel through Moses;

 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, The Lord is
one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your strength.”(Deuteronomy
6: 4 & 5)

 It is a commend from the God to the Israel. It
is saying to love your God with all your heart, soul and strength. The
foundation of what is said, follows after that;

For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all
the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured
possession. The Lord did not set
his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other
peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.  But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he
swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed
you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. (Deuteronomy 6: 6-8)

 Lord did not set his loved on Israel because
they were more numerous than others,but because of the Gods compassion, he
loved the Israel. The Lord is saying to Israel to love him because of his love
on Israel.

 Paul was captured by Jesus' love. By the cross
of Jesus Christ, I was redeemed and received his unconditional love, even
though I was once a slave of the sins.

In order to reciprocate the gods love
by once self, people who have been taken hold by that love will press on
through their life to take hold of it more. Just don't stand still, but forget
what is behind and strain toward what is ahead, press on toward the goal to win
the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus. We are
exerting our self for this one thing only, now.

There was a man named Kanzo Uchimura.
He was baptized when he was a student at Sapporo agriculture school, later
known as University of Hokkaido. However, he has suffered by his own faith. His
conversion was a merely in believing one god instead of many different gods. He
did not understand why Jesus was crucified on the cross.

 He had a trouble with his marriage life. He
did not get along with his tempera- mental wife. For as to run away, he came to
America to study and experienced the conversions. That opportunity arrived when
he met Mr. Sealy, who was a president of Amest College where he studied. At
there, Uchimura heard parable of “Teaching of Potted Plant” from Mr. Sealy.

 Uchimura did not understand the christian
faith at all. He did not feel any change in himself even through he became a
christian. He didn't feel any growth at all.

Truly, from broken family and bearing
miserable life, he departed Japan and came to America as though running away
from it all. For Mr Sealy said to him;

 

 “Uchimura, you are just looking at inner side
of yourself only. You should be looking at outer side of yourself. Why don't
your stop looking back at yourself and look up to Jesus who died on the cross
for your sins. What you are doing is as same as a kid who planted a vegetable
in pot and pull out the root every day to see how it is growing. Why don't you
leave it up to the God and to the sun light, and with confidence, wait for your
own maturity.”

 How about us. Don't we have worries, as same
as, Uchimura's had? Some time we feel suffocated to live a life in order to
reciprocate the Jesus love.

Am I really
grown? Is my faith real thing? Not seeing result of our own growth, we will
feel miserable in midst of all the accumulating failures. Please remember this.
Jesus already took hold of us and the Gods light is shining upon us already. We
will run looking up the God who will make us grow as we press forward toward
that light.  We are exerting our self on
this one thing only.  Paul also wrote in
letter of first Corinthians;

For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I
follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?What, after all, is Apollos? And
what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has
assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has
been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is
anything, but only God, who makes things grow. (1 Corinthians 3: 4-7)
