キリストにあって癒され、聖霊によって力が与えられて強められた私達は、今度は誰かを力づける存在となります。私達の苦しみや痛みの理由は知りえないものばかりです。しかし、分かることは、その苦しみや痛みは誰かを力づけることができるものです。その力の源は私達の経験にあるのです。
経験には限界があります。誰もが戦争を経験しているものではないし、誰もが不慮の事故にあっているわけではありません。大病をしているかということも、これは誰しもというわけではありません。しかし、そこを通ってきたという歴然とした事実には力があります。そうです、同じようにそこを通っている人を励ます、慰める、力づけることができる経験がその人にはあるからです。刑務所の受刑者に伝道できる人は刑務所に入っていた人です。子育てで苦労した人が子育てで苦労している人を助けることができます。伴侶に先立たれた人のことをよく理解できるのは伴侶に先立たれた人です。刑務所について、子育てについて、別れについて、いくつもの本を読んでも、講義を受けても、実際に経験したということにはかないません。

ペテロ第一の手紙：網は繕われ、再び用いられる

最初に今朝、見てまいりますペテロ第一の手紙を拝読させていただきます。6だから、あなたがたは、神の力強い御手の下に、自らを低くしなさい。時が来れば神はあなたがたを高くして下さるであろう。7神はあなたがたをかえりみていて下さるのであるから、自分の思いわずらいを、いっさい神にゆだねるがよい。8身を慎み、目をさましていなさい。あなたがたの敵である悪魔が、ほえたけるししのように、食いつくすべきものを求めて歩き回っている。9この悪魔にむかい、信仰にかたく立って、抵抗しなさい。あなたがたのよく知っているとおり、全世界にいるあなたがたの兄弟たちも、同じような苦しみの数々に会っているのである。10あなたがたをキリストにある永遠の栄光に招き入れて下さったあふるる恵みの神は、しばらくの苦しみの後、あなたがたをいやし、強め、力づけ、不動のものとして下さるであろう。11どうか、力が世々限りなく、神にあるように、アァメン（ペテロ第一の手紙５章６節－１１節）。
今朝、皆さんと見てまいりますペテロの手紙はイエス・キリストの１２弟子の一人であったペテロが書き記したものであり、今、その一部をお読みしました。そこには「悪魔がほえたけるししのように、食いつくすべきものを求めて歩き回っているのだ。だからこの悪魔にむかい、信仰にかたく立って、抵抗しなさい」というような緊迫感ただよう言葉があります。実際にペテロがこの手紙を書いたのは紀元６３年頃でありローマ帝国によるキリスト教徒への大迫害が本格的に起こるのが紀元６４年ですから、まさしくその時は暴風の気配を感じる嵐の前夜という状況でありました。
そのような時に書かれましたこのペテロの手紙で私達が気がつくことは、ペテロが「時」というものを意識していたということです。６節には「時がくれば」とあり、１０節には「しばらくの」と書かれています。彼は色々な困難に直面していましたが、彼の頭には常に「時」というものがあったということです。すなわち、たとえ心揺さぶられるような諸々の困難に直面していても、彼の心は常に冷静であったということです。私達は聖書の記録を通して、かつてのペテロの姿を知っています。その姿は勝気で、あまり物事を深く考えず、気が早い姿でした。すなわち「冷静」という言葉が一番、似合わない男であったのです。しかし、この手紙を書いている彼は諸々の試練にあいながらも動じずに、それらのものは一過性のものであり、全ては神の御手にあり、時が来ればこの状況も変えられるとういうことをしっかりととらえていたのです。
私達が信仰をもつということはこの「しばらくの」とか「時がくれば」という冷静さが与えられるこです。目の前に起きていることに飲み込まれてあわてふためくのではなくて、そこにしっかりと踏みとどまり、これは永遠に続くものではないという確信が与えられるのです。まさしく、そのような意味で、この手紙を書いた時のペテロはかつてのペテロではなく、神様の御手の中で作り変えられた別人ペテロが書いた手紙なのです。彼はどのように変えられたのでしょう。
今日はこの手紙の中から特に１０節、１１節の『あなたがたをキリストにある永遠の栄光に招き入れて下さったあふるる恵みの神は、しばらくの苦しみの後、あなたがたをいやし、強め、力づけ、不動のものとして下さるであろう。11どうか、力が世々限りなく、神にあるように、アァメン』という言葉の中より「いやし、強め、力づけ、不動」ということに目を留めていきたいと願っております。ペテロは明らかにここで手紙の宛先の人達を励ましているのですが、この癒され、強められ、力づけられ、不動のものとされるということはペテロ自身が体験したことであり、これらのことを通して、彼は変えられたのです。それではまず最初に「しばらくの苦しみの後、私達を癒してくださる」ということを見ていきましょう。、
癒される
ペテロの手紙の原語でありますギリシア語では、この癒すという言葉は「漁師が破れた網を繕う」という意味があります。皆さんご存知のようにペテロはかつてガリラヤ湖で漁師をしていたところをイエス様に声をかけられ１２弟子の一人となりました。そして、それはペテロだけではなく、その兄弟アンデレ、ゼベダイの子ヤコブとその兄弟ヨハネも漁師でした。
ですから、この「癒す」という言葉をペテロは日常よく使っていたのでしょう。ガリラヤの漁師は朝まだ暗いうちに漁に出ます。これは現在も変わりません。ただ違うのは現在のガリラやの漁師たちはモーターつきの小舟で湖に出ていくことであり、ガリラヤ湖畔に日が昇る前に佇んでいますと朝もやの中、「トットットッ」とこのモーターの音が聞こえてくる、それが現在のガリラヤの朝の風景です。
実際にペテロもかつては朝早くから漁に出て、陸に戻れば網を引き揚げる時に湖底に沈んでいる灌木や岩によって破れてしまった網を繕い、また明朝に備えるということが日常だったのでしょう。彼がそのようなことを意味する馴染みの言葉をここに使った理由は何でしょうか。
それはペテロにとって「癒し」とは文字通りただ癒される、治るということではなくて、漁師が丁寧に網を繕うように、私達も神様の御手の中で大切に作り変えられるということであり、それは癒されることによって終わりということではなくて、癒される理由は、繕った網が再び用いられますように、私達を神様は再び用いようとしているのだということをこの言葉に込めたのだと思います。
網とは一本の糸でできているのではありません。いくつもの糸が交差して網となっています。すなわち網を繕うというのは、その周りにある糸にまで注意深く手を加えるということです。イエス様が私達を癒すということもこれと似ています。そうです。破れに手を加えるためには私達の心の中で複雑にからみあった問題に手を加えるということです。朝に夕に漁に出ても、この破れを直さなければ収穫は少ないのです。同じようにここが修繕されないと私達が収穫できるはずのものすら、それを逃してしまうのです。
まさしく、これはペテロがイエス様と共にかつて体験した彼の信仰の原点となるものです。彼はイエス様の一番弟子でありながらかつてイエス様を裏切りました。それはペテロの心に大きな破れができてしまったようなものです。自他ともに自分がイエス様を裏切ったことは明白であり、取り返しのつかないことで弁解の余地がありません。しかもその裏切りの顛末がイエス様の十字架へと向かうのですから、この破れは後のペテロの生涯に深い傷として残ったことでしょう。何かある度にこの古傷は頭をもたげてきて、彼の生涯、本来獲得できる諸々の収穫を彼はことごとく逃してしまったことでしょう。
しかし、その裏切られた当人であるイエス様はかつてのペテロの仕事場であったガリラヤ湖の湖畔で彼に会ってくださり、彼を赦し、心破れてしまったペテロをキリストは繕い、今度は人間をすなどる漁師としてこの世界に送り出してくださったのです。
皆さんの中でもし、心の中に癒されたいという何かをお持ちの方がおりましたら、このキリストのもとにいらしてください。それは何か「あぁ～癒された」というような気持ちのいい、一時的なものではなく、私達の心の奥底にある破れをイエス様に触れていただき、それを取り扱っていただくということです。キリストは私達の心の破れに目を注ぎ、丹念にそこに手を加えて繕ってくださるお方です。そして、それだけではないそんな私達の背を押し、今度はその繕われた網をもって再び、私達を送り出してくださるお方なのです。
二つ目の事として、「しばらくの苦しみの後、私達を癒し、強めてくださる」とうことを見てまいりましょう。
強められる
ペテロはその心の破れが癒されたのです。しかし、それだけが後の彼のはたらきの原動力になったかと言いますと、そうではありません。人の力は常に限界がともないます。「ねじりはちまき」や「ど根性」ではどうにもならないことがあります。キリスト教会というものが２０００年もの間、この世界にあり続けているのは、そこに集う人達のたゆみない努力によるのではないのです。もし人の努力だけでしたらイエスなきあとのクリスチャニティーは１０年ももたなかったでしょう。何しろキリストの教会とは目に見えない方を拝して人が集まるところです。そのような集まりは人間の情熱がある、ないというようなことで、どうこうなるものではないのです。
「癒された、破れを繕っていただいた」ということへの感謝の応答はしばらくの間、私達を駆り立てます。しかし、それは決していつまでも続くものではありません。イエス様はそのことをよく知っておられ、このペテロを含め、弟子たちにご自身の身の上に起こる様々な苦しみを受ける前にこう言われました。
「ただ、聖霊があなたがたにくだる時、あなたがたは力を受けて、エルサレム、ユダヤとサマリヤの全土、さらに地のはてまで、わたしの証人となるであろう」（使徒行伝１章８節）。
ここに記されている聖霊とは文字通り霊であり、それは人格をもつ神であります。イエス様は私があなたたちと共にいる限り、私はあなたと共に語らい、食事も共にするが、私なき後、この聖霊があなたたちの上にくだるのなら、あなたたちは力を受けて、エルサレム、ユダヤとサマリヤの全土、さらに地のはてまで、わたしの証人となると言われたのです。そして実際にイエス様がこの約束の言葉を語って後、キリストの弟子達はこの聖霊を受け、彼らは天来の力により強められ、イエス様が言われたように福音はエルサレムから、ユダヤ、サマリやの全土、そして地のはてまで宣べ伝えられたのです。このイエスの言葉に対して、エルサレムから見て、まさしく地の果てにあるこのサンディエゴ日本人教会で現に今こうして礼拝を捧げている私達がいる限り、その言葉が嘘偽りであったということはできません。ペテロは、否、ペテロのみならずクリスチャンと呼ばれるこの世界にそれまで存在したことがなかった人達は聖霊により強められ、イエス様が言われたようにエルサレムから地の果てまで福音を伝えたのです。ですから、このことを知っているパウロはいつもこう祈ったのです。
14こういうわけで、わたしはひざをかがめて、15天上にあり地上にあって「父」と呼ばれているあらゆるものの源なる父に祈る。16どうか父が、その栄光の富にしたがい、御霊により、力をもってあなたがたの内なる人を強くして下さるように・・・」（エペソ３章１４節－１６節）
パウロの切なる願いは御霊により、私達の内なる人が強められることなのです。私達が自己研鑽、自己修練によって強められるのではなくて、御霊によって強められるということです。ですから皆さん、私達は切に聖霊を求めようではありませんか。この霊が臨む時に私達は力を受けます。それは自らによって生み出された力ではありません。それは天から私達の内に臨んだ力であり、それこそが私達の内なる人をほんとうに強くしてくれるものなのです。三つめのこと「しばらくの苦しみの後、あなたがたをいやし、強め、そして力づけてくださる」というところの「力づけてくださる」ということを見ていきましょう。
力づけてくださる
ペテロがまだかつての古き人であった時、イエス様にこれから彼の身に起こることだろうと言われていた予言がありました。イエス様はペテロにこう言っていたのです『31シモン、シモン、見よ、サタンはあなたがたを麦のようにふるいにかけることを願って許された。32しかし、わたしはあなたの信仰がなくならないように、あなたのために祈った。それで、あなたが立ち直ったときには、兄弟たちを力づけてやりなさい」。（ルカ２２章３１節－３４節）
このところのシモンとはペテロのことです。イエス様は彼を名指しして、あなたは後にサタンに麦のようにふるいにかけられるということを話されました。しかし、そのような時にも私はあなたの信仰がなくならないように祈っているというのです！
この言葉が語られてしばらく後、その時がきました。大祭司の中庭で裁判を受け、鞭打たれているイエス様と同じ敷地内にいたペテロはイエス様を三度知らないと言いました。三年半、いつも共にいたお方を知らないというのです。イエス様はこのことを全て知り尽くして、先の言葉を予め言われていたのです。「今、彼は私を否んでる・・・、また彼は私を否んでいる・・・、これで三度目だ・・・、彼はまた私を否んでしまった。しかし、父なる神よ、この私の弟子、ペテロをあわれみたまえ。彼は今、確かに私を否んでいますが、どうか彼の信仰が失われませんように。彼は荒削りですが、素晴らしい賜物があります。彼が立ち直った時には、兄弟を励ますことができるような者としてください」。この言葉はまさしく後に成就します。ペテロが立ち直ることができたのは、まさしくイエス様のとりなしの祈りによるのです。
後にペテロを慕った若者がいました。どなたかご存知ですか。マルコです。パウロの伝度旅行に同伴した男でしたが途中でその旅程を放り投げ、家に帰ってしまった青年です。ゆえにパウロはこのマルコに厳しくあたったのですが、ペテロはこの落伍者マルコを拾い上げ、マルコはペテロの通訳としてはたらきました。まさしく、かつてイエス様から言われた言葉がそのままペテロの生涯に起きたのです。「あなたが立ち直った時には兄弟を力づけてやりなさい」。私は癒された。破れた網は直された。そして、今、この私を神様は用いていてくださる。今も昔も変わらない法則です。躓いた者でなければ、躓いている者を救うことはできないのです。実にペテロはイエス様によって力づけられ、今度は兄弟を力づける者となったのです。

皆さん、私達には誰しもペテロのような経験があります。しかし、その経験は再び生かされます。それをもって誰かを力づけることができるのです。最後のことです。「しばらくの苦しみの後、あなたがたをいやし、強め、力づけ、不動のものとして下さる」というところの「不動のものとしてくださる」ということを見ていきましょう。
不動な者となる
私達の心は日々、揺れるものです。癒され、強められ、力づけられても揺れます。ペテロもかつてはそうでした。彼の初めはまさしく荒削りなのですが、その後、神様は彼を練り、不動の者へと変えられていきます。そして、このことは「しばしの苦しみの後」と書かれていますように、時間の経過と共になされていきました。野球バッターが一夜で不動の四番打者になることがないように、不動の人になるということには「しばしの時」、しかもここに書かれていますように「しばしの苦しみの後」に起きていったものなのです。
ペテロはかつてこのような体験をしました。それはイエス様が群衆に向かって語りかけた後、群衆を解散させた後、ガリラヤ湖で起きたできごとでした。25イエスは夜明けの四時ごろ、海の上を歩いて彼らの方へ行かれた。26弟子たちは、イエスが海の上を歩いておられるのを見て、幽霊だと言っておじ惑い、恐怖のあまり叫び声をあげた。27しかし、イエスはすぐに彼らに声をかけて、「しっかりするのだ、わたしである。恐れることはない」と言われた。28するとペテロが答えて言った、「主よ、あなたでしたか。では、わたしに命じて、水の上を渡ってみもとに行かせてください」。29イエスは、「おいでなさい」と言われたので、ペテロは舟からおり、水の上を歩いてイエスのところへ行った。30しかし、風を見て恐ろしくなり、そしておぼれかけたので、彼は叫んで、「主よ、お助けください」と言った。31イエスはすぐに手を伸ばし、彼をつかまえて言われた、「信仰の薄い者よ、なぜ疑ったのか」。32ふたりが舟に乗り込むと、風はやんでしまった（マタイ１４章２５節－３２節）。
冒頭でお話ししましたようにこの手紙は癒され、強められ、力づけられ、不動の者とされた後にペテロが書いたものです。しかし、かつてのペテロは違いました。ガリラヤの湖で（ここには海）と書かれていますが、これはガリラヤム湖を指しています）、彼はイエス様が湖面を歩いておられるのを見て「自分も水の上を歩かせてください」と頼みました。主はペテロをうながし、ペテロは確かに数歩は歩いたのですが、風を見て恐ろしくなり水の中に沈み、溺れかけたれのです。まさか漁師であったペテロが泳げなかったということはないと思いますが、彼は溺れかけるほどに慌てたのだと思います。先もお話ししましたように、このペテロの姿は彼のかつての姿の典型であり、彼は群を抜く行動力はあるのですが、その後の信仰がいつもともなわなかったのです。ヤコブはヤコブ書に、この時のペテロの心情にぴったりあてはまることを書き記しています。
6ただ、疑わないで、信仰をもって願い求めなさい。疑う人は、風の吹くままに揺れ動く海の波に似ている。7そういう人は、主から何かをいただけるもののように思うべきではない。8そんな人間は、二心の者であって、そのすべての行動に安定がない（ヤコブ１章６節－８節）。
ヤコブはまさしくペテロの心を言い得ています。彼の言動には安定がありませんでした。言うことはいつも勇ましく、頼もしいのですが、必ず頓挫してしまうのです。始めるのですが、続かないのです。彼の感情も信仰も常に上がったり、下がったりしていたのです。しかし、このペテロもこれまでお話してきましたように癒され、聖霊により力づけられ、強められ、そして不動の者へと変えられたのです。そうです、すなわちガリラヤ湖畔で復活のイエス様と出会い、心の破れを修復され、エルサレムの二階座敷で聖霊を受け、彼は不動の者へと変えられたのです。これらのことを通った後の彼の別人のような姿が同労者であるヨハネと共に使徒行伝の中に出てきます。
13人々はペテロとヨハネとの大胆な話しぶりを見、また同時に、ふたりが無学な、ただの人たちであることを知って、不思議に思った。そして彼らがイエスと共にいた者であることを認め、14かつ、彼らにいやされた者がそのそばに立っているのを見ては、まったく返す言葉がなかった。15そこで、ふたりに議会から退場するように命じてから、互に協議をつづけて16言った、「あの人たちを、どうしたらよかろうか。彼らによって著しいしるしが行われたことは、エルサレムの住民全体に知れわたっているので、否定しようもない。17ただ、これ以上このことが民衆の間にひろまらないように、今後はこの名によって、いっさいだれにも語ってはいけないと、おどしてやろうではないか」。18そこで、ふたりを呼び入れて、イエスの名によって語ることも説くことも、いっさい相成らぬと言いわたした。19ペテロとヨハネとは、これに対して言った、「神に聞き従うよりも、あなたがたに聞き従う方が、神の前に正しいかどうか、判断してもらいたい。20わたしたちとしては、自分の見たこと聞いたことを、語らないわけにはいかない」。（使徒行伝４章１３節－２０節）。
ペテロはかつて大祭司の中庭で女中に「あなたはイエスと共にいた」と言われて、恐れあわてふためき、「イエスなど知らない」と言った男です。しかし、今やいつどこででも、大胆にキリストのことを伝え、その姿は彼の姿を見た者達が不思議に思うほどだったのです。彼はその語っていることゆえに、呼び出され、脅しを受けました。ここには上品に書かれていますが、「いいか、お前ら、今、話していることをまた話してみろよ、命の保証はないぜ。夜道を歩く時は気ぃつけーよ」ぐらいのことは言われたのでしょう。しかし、ペテロはヨハネと共に言ったのです「神に聞き従うよりも、あなたがたに聞き従う方が、神の前に正しいかどうか、判断してもらいたい。わたしたちとしては、自分の見たこと聞いたことを、語らないわけにはいかない」。
かつてのペテロの弱さには共通点がありました。それは彼が常に環境の変化によって、自らもころころと変わっていくという不安定さでした。しかし、彼はこの度はなんら変わりません。たとえ自らの命が脅かされても、彼にはよって立つ所がありました。そう、あちこちに揺れ動いてきた彼ですが、遂に彼は決して揺るがない土台に自ら立ったのです。もし、彼が己に寄り頼み、その上に立っていたのなら、彼は揺れ動き続けたでしょう。しかし、彼はゆらぐことのない土台の上に自らを置きました。彼が動じなくなったのは、彼が変わったのではなく、彼が堅固な土台の上に立つようになったからなのです。
では、彼が立ったところは何なのでしょうか。彼は言いました。「神に聞き従うよりも、あなたがたに聞き従う方が、神の前に正しいかどうか、判断してもらいたい。わたしたちとしては、自分の見たこと聞いたことを、語らないわけにはいかない」。
ペテロが見出した立ち得る土台は神に聞き従うこと、すなわち神の御言葉でした。かつてはあのガリラヤ湖の風のように、外からの要因、すなわちこの時にペテロを脅した者達の言動が彼をシェイクしたのです。ゆえに彼は揺れました。しかし、彼はもはや動かない、不動の者と変えられたのです。今日はお話しませんが、イエス様が語られたあの砂と岩の上に建てられた家の譬もこのことを言っているものです。
皆さん、ペテロはしばしの苦しみの後、主によっていやされ、強められ、力づけられ、力づける者とされ、そして不動のものとされました。彼はその己が体験をもとにして私達をも励ましているのです。私達の日々の生活にも様々な苦しみがありますでしょう。しかし、それはしばしのもの、さらに、そのような苦しみも私達がいやされ、強められ、力づけられ、力づける、不動の者とされていくプロセスの中にあるものなのです。
私達もペテロの歩んだ道を歩むことができますように。破れた網をイエス様に繕っていただき、今日も出かけていきましょう。聖霊に満たされ、聖霊によって強められ、力づけられた者として誰かを力づけることができる者となりますように、そして主の御言葉にたって不動の者となるという、この人生をかけるに値する、この身に余る、これら諸々の特権にあずかることができますように。お祈りしましょう。
The first letter of Peter: The net will be mended and be used again for God’s Glory

First of all, I read the first letter of Peter this morning. 6. So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and in his good time he will honor you. 7. Give all your worries and cares to God for he cares about what happens to you. 8. Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking, for some victim to devour. 9. Take a firm stand against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering you are. 10. In his kindness God called you to his eternal glory by means of Jesus Christ. After you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. 11. All power is his forever and ever. Amen. (The first Peter: chapter5:6-11)
This morning, we are looking into the book of the first letter of Peter, written by Peter, one of Jesus Christ’s twelve apostles. In this book, we find the scriptures, “He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour. Take a firm stand against him, and be strong in your faith.” Actually, Peter wrote this letter at AD63, one year before Roman persecutions began. The day before big dark clouds appeared and warning that something drastic was going to happen.
Peter learned to be conscious about “God’s timing”. He wrote in verse six “In his good time”, and in verse ten “After for a little while.” No matter what happened to him, his heart and mind was always “calm”. Calm? Is this word for Peter we know in the four Gospels when he was with Jesus? He was rather strong-willed and spontaneous fisherman. “Calm” does not sound like a word for Peter when he was with Jesus. However, Peter, who was writing this letter, was on a firm foundation. He was sure no matter what happened to him, no matter hard the situation was going on, it was just temporary matter in God’s time. Peter was sure, “after for a little while” every situation would be changed in God’s hand. So that is why He could be calm in His hand.
When we have the “faith” boldly, we would be able to wait for God’s timing calmly as Peter convinced “God’s timing” by his faith. Even if we are facing difficulties, we are not thrown away into the storm, but we are given conviction to know these won’t last forever and strengthened to stand firm by faith. In this mean, Peter was not same person as he was with Jesus. This is a letter written by Peter who had been transformed in God’s hand. Then how had he been transformed?
The first Peter chapter five verse ten to eleven, “10In his kindness God called you to his eternal glory by means of Jesus Christ. After you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.11All powers is his forever and ever. Amen. Today, we are especially looking into the four “words”, from verse ten and eleven, I just read again. Four words; “Restore”, “Support”, “Strengthen”, and “placed on a firm foundation.” That’s what Peter experienced after he had suffered a little while. God restored Peter, God supported Peter, God strengthen Peter, and God placed Peter on a firm foundation!
Peter was encouraging readers with these four words process that Peter had gone through. Through this process, he had been transformed completely. Let’s dig into these words! At first, we start looking into the words, “to be restored” after you have suffered a little while.
To restore (to mend)
Original language of the New Testament is Greek, as you know. In Greek, “to restore” means that “fishermen mend damaged part of a fish net.” As you already know, Peter was recruited by Jesus as one of Jesus twelve apostles when he was fishing in the Sea (lake) of Galilee. Not only Peter, also his brother, Andrew and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, they were fishermen.
I guess that this word, “to mend” was familiar to them as fishermen. Fishermen of the Sea of Galilee, they left to fish before the dawn as they do nowadays. The only difference is that Fishermen today, they use a boat with a motor engine. That sound of motor engine “tox, tox, tox,” echoes around the Sea of Galilee in the morning mist. This is the scenery of the Sea of Galilee in the morning today.
Actually, also, Peter left to fish from early morning, and mended the net after fishing to use it again for the next morning. That was his daily life. Why did Peter use this familiar word for fishermen, “to restore”, also means to “mend a net” in Greek in his letter?
Because “to restore” does not only literally mean to be restored, healed for Peter but also mean to be mended by God’s hand carefully for Peter, just like Peter used to mend a fish net carefully. To be restored (mended) is not done work. I guess Peter wanted to impress that God does not only want to restore us, but also God wants to use us again for God’s eternal work together after God restored us, just like fishermen use the net again after they mended damaged net.
A net is not made from one rope. It is made from many ropes crossing together. So that, to mend the net means that you need to mend very carefully with other ropes around damaged part. This work is just like how Jesus restores us. Yes, to heal us, Jesus put his hands into our damaged part in our heart. The damaged part ropes in our heart and mind are twisted up complicatedly. If fishermen go out to fish with damaged net, they don’t get much. Also for our heart and mind, we cannot do God’s work well with damaged heart.
This damaged net was exactly about Peter when Peter was with Jesus. Although, he was a first apostle for Jesus, he had betrayed Jesus. And for that he got a big breakage in his heart. That was so obvious for everyone. There was no room to make excuse about he rejected Jesus in public. Furthermore, after he had denied Jesus, Peter saw that Jesus was walking to Golgotha to be crucified. I guess Peter’s damage of rejection of his Lord, Jesus for three times kept to remain as very deep scar through his life. This past scandal kept bothering him through his life. Because of that his failure, He must have missed his spiritual fruits that he would had been able to get.
However, Jesus Christ re-encountered Peter at the Sea of Galilee where Peter used to fish when Peter was a fisherman. Jesus forgave Peter. And, Jesus mended Peter’s huge damaged part of the net of his heart. Then Jesus resent Peter as a fishermen to catch “lost people”.
Brothers and sisters, if there is anybody who has something needed to be restored, (mended) in your heart, please come to Jesus Christ. Restoration by Jesus is not temporary, not just as “oh, I feel better, healed”….in a comfortable room. Restoration by Jesus means that we ask Jesus to touch our damage area deep into our heart, then restore it. Jesus knows about our damage even in our hidden part of our heart. He puts his hand into deep our heat to mend (restore) us. Jesus won’t finish his work after mending (restoring) us. Jesus pushes our back to go forward again with our net mended and restored by Jesus.
Second word, from “after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support” Now we are looking into “support”.
To Support
Peter, now he was restored by Jesus. However, this is not reason enough to explain Peter’s God’s work after restored. Human power is always limited. There are always matters, happenings, or situation, nothing we can do with only human ability and power. The reason of existence of “Christian church” over two thousand years is not because of the result of human diligence. If only by human diligence, Christian church would not have lasted even ten years after Jesus left. Christian Church is the place for the people who worship invisible God. This God’s community does not exist only with human passion.
Thankfulness about “restored, mended” urged us to respond it for the time being. However, it won’t last so long. Jesus knows about it very well, Jesus told his apostles including Peter before they suffer for the Gospel. ”But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts1:8)
“Holy Spirit” in this verse literary means “spirit”. Holy Spirit has a personality as a God. Jesus was talking and eating together with his apostles when Jesus was with them. But he left the words as his will; after I leave, Holy Spirit will come upon you, then you will receive power and be witness of Jesus everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” As a result, apostles of Jesus received Holy Spirit. They were strengthened by Holy power. So that they could spread out the good news in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth. We are also witness of Jesus word of two thousand years ago, since we worship just now at the end of the earth, at the San Diego Japanese Christian Church. Peter, of course, not only Peter, Christians, as Jesus witnesses, (never existed before Jesus) were supported by the Holy Spirit in order to deliver the good news to the end of the earth. That is why Paul who knows Holy Spirit’s power prayed in Ephesians chapter three verse fourteen to sixteen;
14 When I think of the wisdom and scope of God’s plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, 15 the creator of everything in heaven and on earth. 16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 3:14-16)
Earnest wish of Paul is that we are given mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit.
We are not supported by our diligence but by Holy Spirit. So let us seek for Holy Spirit. We will have power when Holy Spirit come upon us. This is not our fleshy power. This is a power from the above, from the God that give us mighty inner strength. Now, third word from verse ten, “After you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strength….” we are looking into “strength”.
To Strength
Before Peter was transformed, Jesus prophesied what will happen to Peter. Jesus said to Peter, “31Simon, Simon, Satan had asked to have all of you, to sift you like wheat.32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen and build up your brothers.” (Luke22:32-32)
Simon means Peter in this conversation. Jesus pointed him out to tell that Satan will sift him like wheat. But, Jesus told Simon (means Peter) that Jesus had pleaded in prayer for Simon not to lose his faith even during such a time when Simon will be going to deny Jesus!
After Jesus had told Peter that, the time came. Peter told that he does not know Jesus, when Jesus was in the patio of high priest for the judge, and was scourged. Peter said that he does not know Jesus who he has been with all the time for three and half years. Jesus, he had known what was exactly going to happen, when Jesus had prophesied Peter. “Now he is rejecting me. Again, he is rejecting me. This is third time, again, he is rejecting me. However, Father, God, this my disciple, Peter, please give him your mercy on him. He is rejecting me now, but please help him not to fail his faith. Peter is a rough guy, but he has great gift from you, Father. So when he has repented and turned to me again, he will be able to strengthen and build up his brothers. Amen.”
Later on, there was one young brother who relied on Peter. Do you know who he is? His name is Mark. He had accompanied Paul for Paul’s mission trip, but he gave up to go on with Paul on the half trip, left Paul and went back to home. So that Paul was hard on Mark, but Peter gave Mark a second chance. Mark started working for Peter as an interpreter. You remember? That prayer for Peter by Jesus, happened to Peter in his later life. Jesus said “When you have repented and turn back to me, strengthen and build up your brothers.” I was restored. My damaged broken net of my heart was mended. And now, God use me again for His work. This is a never-changed God’s law. Only big failure can support big failure. Peter, he had been supported by Jesus, then Peter became the one who supported his brothers.
When we were restored and supported by Holy Spirit, we are able to support somebody. We are suffering, we have pain with or without knowing the reasons, why??? However, what we know is that we can support somebody with these experiences of pain and suffering. The souse of support power comes from our suffering and painful experience.
We only can experience limited things for each one of us. Not everybody experienced a war, nor unexpected accident. Not everybody went through serious sick. However, each experience of each one of us has power. What kind of power? Power of encouraging, comforting, supporting for somebody who is going through same kind of experience. Who can evangelize people in prisons? Somebody was in a prison. Who can help parents who have hard time to raise their children up? Somebody who went through hard time to raise their children up. Who can understand the grief of widows? Somebody who lost their spouse. About prisons, parenting. Grief, no matter how many books you read about those, took lectures about those, it is nothing than you experienced.
Brothers and sisters, I believe all of us have experienced failure like Peter. However, our failure experience helps us to understand somebody and encourage them.
Now, the last words from verse ten, “After you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. I talk about that last one, “He will place you on a firm foundation.”
He will place you on a firm foundation
Our mind is always swinging. Even after restored, supported, and strengthened, our mind swings. Peter also was like that. Peter was so rough, but God kneaded Peter to transform. He was placed on a firm foundation by God. But this was not like a microwave cook, but it took time. As mentioned in verse ten, “After you have suffered for a little while”. We know that the clean-up hitter could not get this position over night. We need time to train to be somebody on a firm foundation. It happened after you have suffered for a little while.
We can see what Peter experienced in the Bible before he was on a firm foundation. One thing happened to Peter after Jesus Preaching, and people left the Sea of Galilee. That is Matthew chapter fourteen verse twenty five to thirty two.25About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came to them, walking on the water. 26When the disciples saw him, they screamed in terror, thinking he was a ghost. 27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “It’s all right,” he said, “I am here! Don’t be afraid.” 28Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you by walking on water.” 29 “All right, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he looked around at the high waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Instantly Jesus reached out his hand and grabbed him. “You don’t have much faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32 And when they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. (Matthew 14:25-32)
As I spoke at first, this letter was written by Peter after he had been restored (mended), supported, strengthened, and put on a firm foundation. However, he was different before. One time when Jesus was walking on the Sea of Galilee (it’s a lake.), Peter asked Jesus. “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you by walking on water.” Jesus said, “All right, come.” So Peter walked on the water toward Jesus. But when Peter looked around at the high waves, he was terrified and began to sink. Since he was a fisherman, I don’t think he could not swim. As I spoke previously, this Peter shows us how he was like before transformed. He was spontaneous and took quick action, but he did not have faith enough to continue. James described in the book of James, chapter one verse six how Peter looked like; for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. They can’t make up their minds. They waver back and forth in everything they do.”
The scriptures tell us exact where Peter’s heart was. Peter’s talk was not stable nor reliable. Peter was always brave and strong, but his actions did not last. He starts, but won’t continue. His emotion and faith were like roller coaster, up and down, up and down. However, this Peter had transformed by Holy Spirit, as I’m telling you, was restored (mended), supported, strengthened, and put on a firm foundation. Yes, again, Peter re-encountered resurrected Jesus by the Sea of Galilee, was mended breakage in his heart. He had received Holy Spirit at the second floor of the house in Jerusalem. Then he was transformed by Holy Spirit. You can see transformed Peter in Acts.
13 The members of council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men who had had no special training. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. 14 But since the man who had been healed was standing right there among them, the council had nothing to say. 15 So they sent Peter and John out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves. 16 “What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny they have done a miraculous sign, and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it. 17 But perhaps we can stop them from spreading their propaganda. We’ll warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.” 18 So they called the apostles back in and told them never again to speak or teach about Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him? 20 We cannot stop telling about the wonderful things we have seen and heard.”
Peter was the man who said “I do not know Jesus” when a servant girl came to him, saying “you also were with Jesus of Galilee”. But now, look at Peter, he could not help but tell about Jesus, the gospel, all the time wherever he is. It was unbelievable for People who know Peter before. Peter was called and threatened by the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sad’dycees. In the bible, the scripture sounds very moderately, but I imagine that they threatened Peter and John just like “Hey, you! If you speak anything about Jesus again, we will see your dead bodies. BEEE careful when you walk in the dark.” However, Peter and John answered them back, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
Before, Peter’s weakness was unstill depending on the circumstances. He changed his behavior by his surroundings. But Peter in the Acts, he is so still. Even he was threatened his life, he was always standing on firm foundation that he was placed on. Yes, eventually, he was on the firm foundation. If he kept standing by himself on his own foundation, he still keep swinging. However, he put himself on the firm foundation. He became still, not because he changed, but because he put himself on the firm foundation.
Then, on what foundation did he stand? Peter said in the Acts chapter four verse nineteen, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?” We cannot stop telling about the wonderful things we have seen and heard.”
“The foundation”, peter reached out to stand on is to follow God, God’s Words. Before he was transformed, he was shaken by the external cause like winds at the Sea of Galilee, when he started walking on the water toward Jesus. But this time in the Acts, Peter was not shaken by external cause by what Peter was threatened by high priests. Since he was on the firm foundation not to be shaken by anything, anymore. This reminds us a parable about houses built on a rock and on a sand. (Matthew 7:24-27)
Brothers and sisters, Peter, after he has suffered for a little while, Peter was restored, supported, strengthened, and placed on a firm foundation. Through his this experience, he encourages us. Each one of us might have various sufferings in our daily life. However, these are “for a little while”. These are a part of our process of transformation, be restored, supported, strengthened, and placed on a firm foundation.
I pray for each one of us can go through the way which Peter went through, for being mended our damaged broken net by Jesus. And let us go out to evangelize people today, too! I pray for each one of us be filled with Holy Spirit, supported and strengthened by Holy Spirit to be able to encourage somebody we love. I pray for each one of us can be standing only on God’s words. I pray for each one of us be blessed and not to miss any opportunity for eternity and any gift from the Lord for God’s work for eternity. Let’s pray.
