先日、ある本を読んでいましたら目に飛び込んできた言葉がありました。「Life is simply too big for us to handle by ourselves」「人生は自分でどうにかしようとするにはただ大きすぎる」
私達は学校で色々なことを学びました。買い物をすることができるのも数学を学んだからです。手紙を書くことができるのもひらがなや漢字を学んだからです。英語を学んだということは、アメリカで生活することに少しは貢献していることでしょう。しかし、私達が日々暮らしている日常では学校で学んだことだけでは解決できない問題がたくさんります。
難解な数式を解くことができる人が職場の人間関係を解くことができるとは限りません。英語がペラペラな人が夫婦の関係をよく保つことができるとは限りません。生物学を学んだ人が病気を全て克服できるというわけではありません。心理学を学んだ人の親子の間に問題がないということはありません。実に人生は自分でどうにかしようとするには大きすぎ、まだ難解です。このことを知るソロモンは天来の知恵を求め、それと共に日々を過ごしたに違いありません。私達もこの知恵をいただき、日々の出来事に丁寧に向き合いたいものです。

この大前提から始めていますか？

先週の日曜日まで私達は聖書６６巻の一書づつを毎週見ながら、聖書全体のメッセージをくみ取ろうとしました。牧師の顔を見れば「一つにとらわれずに全体を」ということを思いだしていただくほどに、このことは何度も繰り返しお話してきました。聖書の中の一つの出来事を聖書全体の中から見て考えるということは、物事を空高く飛ぶ鷲の視点で見るようなもので、この視点は必ず私達のこれからの生涯に大きな益を与えてくれると信じます。
それに対してこれから数か月をかけて見ていこうとするものは、私達の日常の出来事を注視し、そのことに対して天来の知恵をいただくということです。全体をとらえる視点と、日常の出来事に一つ一つ丁寧に向き合い、天来の知恵をいただくということ、これらから得ることができるものはまさしく信仰生涯ならではの特権だと思います。
そのために、今日からは旧約聖書の「箴言」を見てまいりたいと思います。この書は一般的に「知恵の書」と呼ばれており、聖書の中でもとてもユニークな書で、その冒頭にはこう書かれています『1ダビデの子、イスラエルの王ソロモンの箴言。2これは人に知恵と教訓とを知らせ、悟りの言葉をさとらせ、3賢い行いと、正義と公正と公平の教訓をうけさせ、4思慮のない者に悟りを与え、若い者に知識と慎みを得させるためである。5賢い者はこれを聞いて学に進み、さとい者は指導を得る。6人はこれによって箴言と、たとえと、賢い者の言葉と、そのなぞとを悟る』（箴言１章１節－６節）。
ここにも書かれていますように、この書は今から約３０００年前に生きたイスラエルの三代目の王、ソロモンが書いた書で、彼は聖書中、この「箴言」と「伝道の書」を書きました。これらは聖書の中でもとてもユニークなもので、今まで聖書を読んだことがない、教会に行ったことがないという方でも、今晩から読み始めてもその書かれていることが分かる内容となっています。
世の中には「何とかの名言集」という本がたくさんあります。古の昔から現存する人の知恵を集めた人生訓です。それではこの「箴言」もソロモンの人生訓なのでしょうか。読んでみますと確かに箴言は私達の生活の細かいところについて語っているもので、彼が自分の日々の暮らしの中で経験し、学んだことなのだと思います。しかしこの箴言には他の名言集とは一線を画すこのような背景がありました。それはある晩のことでした。
5ギベオンで主は夜の夢にソロモンに現れて言われた、「あなたに何を与えようか、求めなさい」。6ソロモンは言った、「あなたのしもべであるわたしの父ダビデがあなたに対して誠実と公義と真心とをもって、あなたの前に歩んだので、あなたは大いなるいつくしみを彼に示されました。またあなたは彼のために、この大いなるいつくしみをたくわえて、今日、彼の位に座する子を授けられました。7わが神、主よ、あなたはこのしもべを、わたしの父ダビデに代って王とならせられました。しかし、わたしは小さい子供であって、出入りすることを知りません。8かつ、しもべはあなたが選ばれた、あなたの民、すなわちその数が多くて、数えることも、調べることもできないほどのおびただしい民の中におります。9それゆえ、聞きわける心をしもべに与えて、あなたの民をさばかせ、わたしに善悪をわきまえることを得させてください。だれが、あなたのこの大いなる民をさばくことができましょう」。10ソロモンはこの事を求めたので、そのことが主のみこころにかなった。11そこで神は彼に言われた、「あなたはこの事を求めて、自分のために長命を求めず、また自分のために富を求めず、また自分の敵の命をも求めず、ただ訴えをききわける知恵を求めたゆえに、12見よ、わたしはあなたの言葉にしたがって、賢い、英明な心を与える。あなたの先にはあなたに並ぶ者がなく、あなたの後にもあなたに並ぶ者は起らないであろう。13わたしはまたあなたの求めないもの、すなわち富と誉をもあなたに与える。あなたの生きているかぎり、王たちのうちにあなたに並ぶ者はないであろう。14もしあなたが、あなたの父ダビデの歩んだように、わたしの道に歩んで、わたしの定めと命令とを守るならば、わたしはあなたの日を長くするであろう」（列王記上３章５節－１４節）。
ソロモンは神様から「あなたが求めるものを何でも言ってごらん」と言われ、それに対して彼は長命、富や栄誉、敵の命を求めずに「知恵」を求めました。よくよくソロモンの選択を思えば、それは正しいと思います。富と権力を得ても、その用い方を知らなければ、それは私達にとって害となります。しかし天来の知恵があれば、私達は自らを守り、国を治め、またその生涯に楽しみが加わります。このようなものを求めるのですから、ソロモンはもともと聡明な人だったのだと思います。神様はその彼の求めを喜び、彼に賢い、英名な心を与えました。そうです、神様は彼に後にも先にも並ぶものがないような知恵を与え、それのみならずソロモンが求めることもなかった破格の富と誉をも彼に授けました。
これらから分かることはソロモンがこのところに書いている箴言は彼の人生訓というよりも神様が彼に与えたものだと言うことができます。その知恵は夫婦や子育てに関すること、自分の心の管理、誘惑に対する心構え等、とても具体性に富んだものであり、彼の時代から３０００年を経た現代を生きる私達の生活にも十分に適応できるものです。

ソロモンは３１章からなるこの箴言の最初にこの書の導入と結論を書いています。すなわちそれは『主を恐れることは知識のはじめである、愚かな者は知恵と教訓を軽んじる』（箴言１章７節）ということです。彼はこれから多くの知恵を書き連ねていくけれど、まず私達が知っておかなければならないことは「主を恐れることこそが知恵の始まりだ」と言うのです。これが前提であり、これが結論だというのです。
「無神論」という言葉があります。それは神はいないという考え・・・、というよりも「神はいないという信仰」です。なぜなら、それを証明することはできないのですから無神論者とは「私は神はいないと信じる」と言っている信仰者です。
先日、NHKで中国で今、キリスト教が爆発的に増えているという特集をしていました。２０年前に比べて実に七倍ものクリスチャンがおり、現在は一億を超える人がキリスト教徒だというのです。ご存知のように中国は共産主義の国でこれまであらゆる宗教を排斥してきました。すなわち自分の上に至高なる存在はないという信仰のもと、その上に国を建てあげてきたのです。
これはかつてのソ連でもそうだったと聞きますが、皮肉なことにこの共産主義、無神論で国造りをしてきた中国は今日、多くの汚職の問題を抱える国となりました。言うまでもない政府の官僚から地方都市の会社の役員まで、きっとその多くはそれなりの学を積んだ人達なのでしょうが、彼らの間に汚職が絶えないというのです。ですから現在の中国のリーダー、習近平総書記の公約の一つがこの汚職を取りしまることだというのです。言うまでもない汚職の問題は、すなわち倫理と道徳の問題です。
さらに他の国々にも悪影響を与える実際的な問題として、あの１０メートル先が見えないと言われている現在の中国の深刻な大気汚染です。明らかにあの空気は人間が排出している何かによるもので、このような環境問題の根源にもやはり人間の倫理的、道徳的なな問題があります。
すなわち汚職にしても、汚染にしても、本来、それは誰が見ていなくても良心と共にその内なる囁きにノーと言うことができれば起きないことです。しかし、人は弱いのです。「自分さえよければいい」という思いにいたることは、どの人間も持ち合わせている人の性（さが）でありましょう。そして、これらに拍車をかけているものは「自分の全てを見ている至高なる存在などはいない」ということで、こうなりますと極論を言えば「ばれなければいい」ということに行き着くことは避けられません。
知識を得ることは悪いことではありません。私達は生涯、学び続けるべきでありましょう。しかしながら「知識があること」と「道徳的であるということ」はイコールではありません。しかも、知識は暴走します。神なき生き方のもと、知識だけが増していきますと、私達はその知識を用いてあらゆることをします。「おれおれ詐欺」や「不正株取引や脱税の手腕」は悪知恵の集大成でしょう。手のこんだ知的な悪事がこの世界には蔓延しています。
現在、日本の５０００円札の顔となっている人にクリスチャンであった新渡戸稲造がいます。新渡戸は国際連盟事務次長を務め、東京女子大の初代学長となった人です。この新渡戸とベルギーの高名な法学者ラブレーとの会話は有名です。
ラブレー：「あなたの国の学校には宗教教育はないのですか」
新渡戸：「ありません」
ラブレー：「宗教なしで、どうやって道徳教育を授けるのですか」
この会話に衝撃を受けた新渡戸は、名著「武士道」を書き、それは今日、日本のみならず世界中で読まれています。学を積むこと、多くの経験をすること、これはとても大切です。しかし、それらを成すにあたり、まず最初にすべきことをソロモンは言っているのであり、またラブレーもまず私達が知らなければならないことは、人を超える至高なる存在のことなのだと言ったのです。
この世界を支配している神について知りなさい。人はどんなに強がってみても、口と鼻が一時、塞がれただけで命を失う弱い者であるということを知りなさい。「生きている」のではなくて「生かされている」ということを知りなさい。どんなに頭がよくても、腕力があっても諸々の誘惑に対して無力であるということを知りなさい。不正が横行しても、自分がしていることを全て見ておられるお方がいることを知りなさい。「わが想いはあなたがたがの思いとは異なる」と言われる神の御心について思いを寄せなさい。私達が暮らす世界では一足す一は二とならないことばかりだということを知りなさい。あなたはその問題にどう対処するのですか。経験と知識ではどうすることもできない人の心の問題、あなたや愛する者の病や死にどう向き合うのですか。「Life is simply too big for us to handle by ourselves」「人生は自分でどうにかしようとするにはただ大きすぎる」のです。
確かに人生で直面する問題は大きすぎます。ですから私達は対処法を探します。コンピューターの時代では、そのために必要な対処法を得ることは簡単です。気になる問題を打ち込んで、クリックすれば無数の情報が一瞬にして私達の目の前にあらわれます。グーグルで「Depression」を検索しましたら０．２１秒で２億５千６００万件の情報が集まりました。これら全てを閲覧していたら１０年はかかるのではないでしょうか。その間に病状はさらに悪くなるかもしれません。
母が病に倒れた時にその原因が分からない日が続きました。その中である医師から「傍腫瘍性神経症候群（ぼうしゅようせいしんけいしょうこうぐん、paraneoplastic neurological syndrome PNS）ではないかと言われました。病名というのはその名前だけで人間を不安にさせるものです。この日常ではお目にかかることのない漢字と英単語が私達を不安に落としめるのです。
これが２０年前でしたら、聞いたことのない病名を言われてもその情報を得ることなどはできませんでした。この傍腫瘍性神経症候群についてもインターネットで検索してみましたところ９万２００件、この病気に関する情報が出てきました。
今はとても便利な世の中です。メディカルスクールでお医者さん達が学ようなことがすぐに分かるのですから。しかし、どうですか、私がしたように自分や家族の病気を同じように調べた方達、確かに事細かな情報は得られますが、その時、調べれば調べるほど、心に平安がありましたか。私が見聞きする限り、情報を得れば得るほど、すなわち知恵が増せば増すほど、不安が増します。私達は最も大切なことを忘れているからです。そしてこのことはソロモンも既に承知していたことでした。彼は伝道の書に書いています。
『それは知恵が多ければ悩みが多く、知識を増す者は憂いを増すからである』（伝道の書１章１８節）。『多くの書を作れば際限がない。多く学べばからだが疲れる』（伝道の書１２章１２節）。
ソロモンは箴言という知恵の書を書いていながら、その弱点も知っていました。そうです、知恵、知識を得れば悩みは増えます。学べば学ぶほどに心身ともに疲れてしまうのです。だから彼はこの言葉の後に引き続き、こう書くことを忘れませんでした。
『多くの書を作れば際限がない。多く学べばからだが疲れる。13事の帰する所は、すべて言われた。すなわち、神をおそれ、その命令を守れ。これはすべての人の本分である』（伝道の書１２章１２節－１３節）。
そうです、これは先に申し上げたように箴言の導入である、「神をおそれよ」という結論です。神を見失うのなら、私達の心はたちまち闇に包まれ、不安に支配されてしまいます。病気に限りません。この国の「老後のこと」や「この国で子供達が教育を受けていくということ」をインターネットで調べてみてください。「ホッとしました」とか「心に平安が与えられました」という方はまずいないでしょう。そして、右往左往して、あれもこれもと動き出します。右往左往している時というのは冷静ではなく、先に学んできましたように「物事の全体をとらえること」などできていませんから性急な判断や決断をし、さらに問題は広がり、さらに不安がつきまといます。
「ボタンの掛け違い」という言葉があります。最初のボタンを掛け間違えると全てがずれてしまうということです。ソロモンは知恵について語るにあたり、「主を恐れる」ということがその知恵の始まりなのだと言いました。ここから諸々の知恵は続き、主を恐れるということが最初にあるのなら、後は存分にあなたの心に知恵を蓄えなさいというのです。ここから私達の諸々の学も、経験も建てあげられていくのです。そして、そうであるのなら私達の生涯は守られ、祝福されていく、心に平安があると聖書は何度も約束しています。
『主を恐れることは命の泉である、人を死のわなからのがれさせる』（箴言１４章２７節）。
『謙遜と主を恐れることとの報いは、富と誉と命とである』（箴言２２章４節）。
『人を恐れると、わなに陥る、主に信頼する者は安らかである』（箴言２９章２５節）。ソロモンの言葉を受けて、キリストもこう言ったではありませんか。
4そこでわたしの友であるあなたがたに言うが、からだを殺しても、そのあとでそれ以上なにもできない者どもを恐れるな。5恐るべき者がだれであるか、教えてあげよう。
殺したあとで、更に地獄に投げ込む権威のあるかたを恐れなさい。そうだ、あなたがたに言っておくが、そのかたを恐れなさい（ルカ１２章４節‐５節）。
詩篇１１５篇の著者は誰だか分かりません。しかし、詩篇の多くはダビデによって書かれたということを思います時にダビデの歌なのかもしれません。そうです、ダビデはソロモンの父です。詩篇１１５篇にはこう書かれています。
『11主を恐れる者よ、主に信頼せよ。主は彼らの助け、また彼らの盾である。12主はわれらをみこころにとめられた。主はわれらを恵み、
イスラエルの家を恵み、アロンの家を恵み、13また、小さい者も、大いなる者も、主を恐れる者を恵まれる』（詩篇１１５篇１１節－１３節）。
主を恐れるところから命の泉はわく。主を恐れることは私達を諸々の罠から逃れさせてくれる。主を恐れることによる報いは富と誉と命である。私達が恐れなければならないものを恐れずに人を恐れると私達は罠に陥る。しかし、主をおそれ、主に信頼するのなら、私達の心にはキリストが約束された「世が与えるものとは異なる平安」が与えられます。詩篇１１５篇ががダビデによるものなら、主を恐れるということをソロモンは父ダビデから受け継ぎ、そのことの祝福を己が人生の中で一つ一つ体験して「主をおそれる者を恵まれる」という言葉を己が生涯の第一の教訓としたのでしょう。
初代の教会はどのようにして建てられ、各地に広まっていったのでしょうか。使徒行伝はその様をこう記しています。『こうして教会は、ユダヤ、カイザリア、サマリヤ全地方にわたって平安を保ち、基礎がかたまり、主をおそれ、聖霊に励まされて歩み、次第に信徒の数を増して行った』（使徒行伝９章３１節）
どの教会にもいつも課題があります。しかし、その教会が道を誤らない王道があります。その秘訣は初代教会の姿の中にすべて込められています。基礎がかたまり、その土台の上に私達が立つこと。基礎がしっかりしているのならいかなる大水によっても私達が動じることはありません。そして、主をおそれ、聖霊と共に歩むことです。主をおそれて主を礼拝することです。それが知恵のはじまりなのですから、最初のボタンがしっかりと教会のうちにかけられているのなら、さらなる祝福が私達を追いかけてくることでしょう。
預言者イザヤはイエス・キリストがやがてこの地に来るということを予め預言しました。そして、そのキリストとはどんな方なのかということまで具体的に預言しました。
『１エッサイの株から一つの芽が出、その根から一つの若枝が生えて実を結び、２ その上に主の霊がとどまる。これは知恵と悟りの霊、深慮と才能の霊、
主を知る知識と主を恐れる霊である。３彼は主を恐れることを楽しみとし、その目の見るところによって、さばきをなさず、その耳の聞くところによって、定めをなさず、４正義をもって貧しい者をさばき、公平をもって国のうちの柔和な者のために定めをなし、その口のむちをもって国を撃ち、そのくちびるの息をもって悪しき者を殺す。５正義はその腰の帯となり、忠信はその身の帯となる』（ イザヤ１１章１節－５節）
イエス・キリストの上には主の霊があり、それは知恵と悟りの霊、深慮と才能の霊、主を知る知識と主を恐れる霊だとイザヤは預言しました。そして、私達はまさしくイザヤが言ったとおりのイエス様の姿を福音書の中に見出すのです。さらに私達が心にとめるべきことはイエス様は「主を恐れることを楽しみ」としたのです。主を恐れることが私達の楽しみとなるということは驚きです。

このどっしりと重い言葉にたいして、私達は今日、どんな約束の言葉を見てきましたか。「主をおそれる」ことによって私達に約束されていることは何ですか。主を恐れることは命の泉、人を死の罠から逃れさせる、主をおそれることとの報いは、富と誉と命、主をおそれるものには平安がある、小さい者も、大いなる者も、主を恐れる者を主は恵まれる。いかに私達の人生で私達が直面することも、主をおそれる者が主と共に、主から知恵をいただいて歩むのなら必ず乗り越えることができる。そして、私達は主を恐れることを楽しみとして生きていくことができるのです。それが聖書の約束です。
皆さんにお尋ねします。あなたはこれまでの生涯、何に土台を起き、何を慕い今日まできましたか。これからの生涯、何をもって生きていきますか。瞬時に情報をくれるネットでしょうか。頼りがいのある人の肩によりかかっていきますか。知れば知るほどに不安になる私達の心、自分の良心に反して思わぬことをしでかしてしまいかねない私達の心、望むものは全て手に入れたのに、どうしても満たされない私達の心・・・。
一度たてたライフ・プランは絶対に変えてはならないということはありません。もし、今日、このメッセージを聞いて心に何か語りかけがあったという方がいましたら、「主をおそれる」というところからもう一度、土台を作り始めませんか。たとえ私達が、私達の子や孫たちが学識と富と名誉をもっていても、この「主をおそれる」という、たった一つのことがないということにより、これらはすべて一瞬に失われてしまうものなのです。私達にとって最も大切なことは、この大前提の上に私達のかけがえのない人生を建てあげることです。私達にとって、また私達の次のジェネレーションにとって、最も価値ある真理は「主をおそれて生きる」という私達の信仰なのです。お祈りしましょう。
The foundation of all wisdom and knowledge

Until last Sunday, we have learned each of all sixty six books of the Bible every week to understand the consistent message going through the whole Bible. I repeated “Watch not parts but the whole” so may times that you may be able to remember it whenever you see me. We need to regard one incident in the Bible as an aspect of the whole Bible. It is as if having a view point of an eagle flying high up in the sky. I am sure that looking at these matters in such a way will give us a great benefit for our lives in the future.
On the other hand, what we learn in the next several months will be asking for the wisdom from heaven when we are involved in daily events. So now we have two viewpoints. One is to see matters objectively and another is to see details of daily events carefully by asking for the wisdom from heaven each time. It must be a believers’ privilege that we have been given the two different ways of dealing with the matters.
In order to learn the latter point of view, I want to begin to study “Proverbs” in the old testament from today. Generally, this book is called the book of wisdom and is considered unique among the books of the Bible. It begin with these sentences. “The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; 4 for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young— 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.”(proverbs 1:1-6)
As it is written, this book is written by Solomon, the third king of Israel who lived 3000 years ago. He wrote this proverbs and the Ecclesiastes in the Bible. They are so unique and practical that anyone who has never read the Bible or never been to church can understand them easily.
There are many books of wise sayings in the world. They are the collection of teachings of wise people throughout the ages. Is the book of Proverbs also the book of Solomon’s teaching? It teaches details of our life. Surely, it should have come from what Solomon experienced and learned through his life. But the Proverbs is totally different from other books of the wise sayings. It is shown in the event that happened to Solomon one night.
5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream,and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” 6 Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. 7 “Now, LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. 9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. 14 And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”(1 kings 3:5-14)
Solomon was asked by God to be told of whatever he wanted. He asked for wisdom but not anything such as long life, wealth, honor or death of his enemies. I believe his choice was right because if we don’t know how to manage wealth and honor, they will become obstacles. But if we have wisdom from heaven, we will protect ourselves and will rule the country. Besides, pleasure will be added to our lives. Since Solomon asked for wisdom to God, he must have been a wise person from the beginning. God was pleased with his request and gave him a wise and discerning heart. Yes, God gave him the wisdom which nobody had ever had before or after and also blessed him with exceptional wealth and honor that Solomon never requested.
Reading this event, we understand that the Proverbs is not only the teaching of Solomon but also the teaching from God. His topic ranges from husband and wife, raising children, and controlling our minds or mental attitude for temptation. They are full of practical ideas and can be applied fully to our modern life now although it was written 3000 years ago.
The other day, I was reading the book and this phrase caught my attention. “ Life is simply too big for us to handle by ourselves”
We learned many things at school. We are able to shop because we learned mathematics. We can write a letter because we learned Japanese and Chinese characters. Learning English has helped us to live in America. However, in our daily life, there are so many problems that we can’t solve with knowledge we learned at school.
A person who can solve a difficult algebra problem may not be able to solve a relationship problem at work. A person who can speak English fluently may not be able to keep a good relationship between a husband and a wife. Learning Biology doesn’t guarantee knowledge of cures to every illness. We can’t say that there is no problem between parents who learned psychology and their children. Surely, life is simply too big and too complicated for us to handle by ourselves. Since Solomon knew this truth, he asked God for the wisdom and must have used it every day. We also want to deal with daily events carefully by asking for God’s wisdom.
Solomon wrote the introduction and the conclusion in the beginning of the Proverbs which consist of thirty one chapters. It is “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7) He mentioned that what we need to know at first was that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. He said that this was the foundation and also conclusion.
Think about the word “Atheism”. This is a belief rather than the thought that there is no God. It is because we can not prove there is no existence of God. So an atheist is a believer who believes that there is no God.
The other day, NHK broadcast the special TV program on the explosion of Christian population in present China. It is said that Christian population is seven times more than that of twenty years ago. Now the number of Christians are more than one million. As you know, China is a communist country and trying to drive out all kinds of religions. They built the country based on the faith of no superior being over human.
I heard that Soviet Union used to have the same problems as China. China built the country based on communism and atheism and became a country with many corruptions. Needless to say, corruption is seen all over among people, from bureaucrat of the government to company executives in small cities although most of them might have high academic background. Xi Ginping is the leader of China now, and one of his pledge is to control this corruption. Of course thriving off of corruption means losing the ethics and the morality.
There is another practical problem in China that affects other countries. It is the serious air pollution which is so terrible that people can’t even see ten meters ahead. Evidently, it is caused by something man has created. The environment problem attributes to the lack of human ethics and morality.
The corruption or pollution won’t happen if we always listen to our conscience and say “no” against the wicked whispering to our mind. But humans are weak. It is human nature to think that we don’t mind whatever happens to others as long as it doesn’t affect us. The idea of no superior being watching over us leads to the conclusion that it should be all right if our wrong deeds are not found out.
It is not a bad idea to gain knowledge. We should keep learning while we live. However, having knowledge does not mean gaining morality. Besides, knowledge can be used in the wrong way. If knowledge increases without knowing God, we will do anything to satisfy ourselves with it. Ore Ore or “it’s me” swindle, illegal stock trading and tax evasion are collection of cunning. Crafty crimes are spreading all over the world.

R: Is there any religious education at school in your country?
N: No, there isn’t.
R: Then how do they teach morals to students without a religion?
He was shocked by de Rabelais’ question and wrote the famous book called “Bushido, The Soul of Japan” It was read by many people in Japan and all over the world now. Getting education and having experiences are very important. But Solomon mentioned about the thing we need to know at the first place before learning. de Rabelais also said that what we should acknowledge is the superior being over humanity.
Know God who rules over the world. Know that man is weak no matter how he shows of his strength because he can not live if his nose and mouth are blocked just for a few minutes. Know that you do not live by yourself but are kept alive. No matter how you are brilliant or strong, know that you have no power against all kinds of temptation. Know that there is someone who watches everything you do although injustice are infesting. Ponder God’s will which says that his ways are higher than our ways. Know that one plus one doesn’t always make two in this world. How do you deal with this problem? How do you face mental matter and physical illnesses or the death of your loved one as your knowledge and experience are useless for them? Life is simply too big for us to handle by ourselves.
Indeed, problems we face in our life are too big to handle. So we need to look for the ways to deal with them. It is easy to get necessary information in the computer age. Click the search button after having input a key word you want to know, and information related to the key word will show up on a screen in a moment. When I search the word “Depression” with Google, two hundred fifty six million articles were found in zero point two (0.2)seconds. It may take ten years if I read all of those. During that time, the symptoms of my depression would get worse.
When my mother became ill, many days passed without knowing the cause of the illness. Then one day the doctor told us that it might have been paraneoplastic neurological syndrome. Generally, the sound of the name of an illness make us feel uneasy. This unfamiliar Chinese character and English vocabulary depressed us.
If it had happened twenty years ago, we couldn’t have gotten any information about the disease. When I searched the word “PNS” on the computer, ninety thousands and two hundred articles related to it were found.
Today is the age of convenience. It is because anyone can have knowledge about the illness which only doctors could learn at medical school before. But what do you think? When you search the name of the illness like I did, of course you must get much information in detail, but do you think that the more you research, the more peace you find in your heart? As long as I know, the more information and the more knowledge you get, the more anxiety you have. It is because we forget the most important thing. That is what Solomon already knew. He wrote in Ecclesiastes.
“For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.” (Ecclesiastes 1:18) “Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.” (Ecclesiastes12:12)
Although Solomon wrote the book of wisdom, he knew the weak point of it. When wisdom and knowledge increase, worries also increase. The more we learn, the more weary our hearts and bodies become. So he didn’t forget to add these sentences.

Yes it is. As I told you before, “fear God” is the conclusion of Ecclesiastes and is used as a introduction of the Proverbs. If we forget God, our hearts will be veiled by darkness and will be controlled by sense of anxiety. It is not limited to only illness. Research on the internet about the life after retirement or education for children in this country. I hardly know people who say “ I was relieved” or “ I had peace in my mind” If anything, we are swayed by this information and are running around in confusion. When we are confused, we tend to give a hasty judgment or wrong decision as we are not calm enough to see the whole picture of the incident,
We say “You are buttoned up wrong” It means that if the first button misses the right hole, the rest will be crooked. Solomon said that the fear of God is the beginning of knowledge. All other knowledge will come after this. He said that we could have wisdom as much as we wanted if we fear God at first. Then our learning and experiences will be built upon this foundation. The Bible promises many times that our life will be protected, will be blessed, and we will have peace in our mind if we follow this instruction, .
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.(Proverbs 14:27)
Humility is the fear of the LORD; its wages are riches and honor and life. (Proverbs 22:4)
Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. (proverbs 29:25)
Remember Jesus Christ agreed with this word and said 4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. “(Luke 12:4-5)
We don’t know for sure the author of Psalms 115. It may be David because many of songs in Psalms were written by David. Yes. David is the father of Solomon. It is written in Psalms 115.
11 You who fear him, trust in the LORD—he is their help and shield. 12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us: He will bless his people Israel, he will bless the house of Aaron, 13 he will bless those who fear the LORD— small and great alike.(Psalms 115:11-13)
The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life. The fear of the Lord keeps us safe. The reward of fearing the Lord is riches and honor and life. When we fear man instead of the Lord, we fall into a snare. But if we fear and trust the Lord, as Christ promised us, we are given the peace which is different from the peace the world can give. If Psalms 115 had been written by David, Solomon would have learned about it from his father. Solomon must have experienced the blessing from his father’s words one by one in his life. And through it, he realized that the most important teaching for his life is “Lord will bless the one who fear the Lord”.
How did the first church start and spread to all over? It is written in the Acts. “31Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.” (the Acts 9:31)
There are always some tasks at any church. And we also have the golden rule for Christians which says “Do not fail to finish the tasks.” We can trace back to the very first church to find the important secrets of this rule. We should stand on the foundation after having established it. If the foundation is solid, we are not upset by any flood. Then we should fear God and walk with the holy spirit. We worship God fearing Him. Because this is the beginning of wisdom, the blessing will follow us if the first button is put in the right place.
The prophet Isaiah prophesied that Jesus Christ would come on this earth. He also prophesied concretely who Jesus was.
“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD—
3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.” (Isaiah 11:1-5)
Isaiah prophesied that the spirit of the Lord would rest on him, and this would the Spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord. We find Jesus in the book of gospel as exactly as Isaiah prophesied. And what we should keep in our mind is that Jesus was delighted in the fear of the Lord. It is marvelous.

It is a serious phrase. Which promise did we see as the answer of this? What is the promise of fearing the Lord? The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life. The fear of the Lord keeps us safe from snare. The reward of fearing the Lord is riches and honor and life. The fear of the Lord gives us peace. The fear of the Lord gives blessing to both the small and the great. We can overcome anything we face in our life if we walk with the Lord and with the wisdom from heaven. We also can be delighted in the fear of the Lord. This is the promise of the Bible.
Let me ask you, brothers and sisters. What is your foundation to stand on and what did you look up in your life so far until today? What are you going to have to live from now? Is it a computer which gives you any information in a second? Is it a trustworthy someone whom you can rely on? Is it your heart cause you worry? Is it a heart which can do something wrong against your will? Is it your unsatisfied heart even though you got everything you wanted?
It is not true at all that we can’t change the rule we made. If anyone who heard this message and listened to the voice from God today, why don’t you make your foundation again to begin with fearing the Lord ? Although we or our children, and grand children have knowledge, wealth or honor, all of those will be lost in a moment if we don’t have the fear of the Lord. The most important thing is to built our only life on this foundation”The fear of the Lord”. For us and for our next generation, the only truth is the faith to live by fearing the Lord. Let’s pray
