「アップル」というコンピューター会社がありますが、その最高経営責任者でありますスティーブ・ジョブスという人がいます。彼は大きな病気をしまして、一時、そのはたらきから外れました。それと同時にアップルの株価は不安定となりました。しかし、その彼が回復して元気な姿を現すとまた株価が持ち直すというのです。人のリーダーでさえもこうなのですから、イエス・キリストが弟子達の前から姿を消したということは、とてもマイナスに思えることであったに違いありません・・・。

「キリストは今、何をしているのか？」　                                                                                       

    “天にのぼり、全能の父なる神の右に座したまえり”             　                                                             ２０１１年６月１９日

 濃縮されたフルーツ・ジュースというものがあります。それは、その果実の栄養や味を凝縮したジュースであるということです。同じように、今朝も唱えました「使徒信条」はキリスト教信仰というものを凝縮した言葉で、本当に必要な言葉だけが記されているものです。この使徒信条には私達の寄って立つものがすべて含まれているのです。さぁ、今日もこの中から幾つかのことをみていきましょう。

私達はこれまで使徒信条に記されている「我は天地のつくり主、全能の父なる神を信ず、我らはその一人子、われらの主イエス・キリストを信ず。主は聖霊によりて宿り、おとめマリアより生まれ、ポンテオ・ピラトのもとに苦しみを受け、十字架につけられ、死にて葬られ、陰府に下り、三日目に死人のうちよりよみがえり・・・」ということを見てきました。

ここまでの信条を読みますと、イエス・キリストの使命というものは全て終了したかのように思われます。すなわち、私達のよく知る「クリスマス」から「グッドフライデー」、そして「イースター」までがここには記されているのですから、もう他にキリストがなすべきことは何もないのではないかと思いがちです。

しかし、実際には聖書はここで終わらないのです。その先があるのです。ですから使徒信条も今、読みました信条の後に「天にのぼり、全能の父なる神の右に座したまえり」という言葉を記しているのです。先ほど、使徒信条は聖書が凝縮されたものであるといいましたが、凝縮とは最重要なものだけを残すということですので、「イエス・キリストが天にのぼり、全能の父なる神の右に座した」という言葉も最重要な言葉として、あえて使徒信条に残されたものなのです。今日はこのところからなぜ、イエスが天にのぼり、全能の父なる神の右に座したということが重要なのかという、その理由を二つ、お話します。まず、最初に「私達に助け手を送るため」ということです。

私達に助け手を送るため 

イエス様の言動を「ルカによる福音書」に書き残したルカという人は、その書の一番最後をこのような言葉で書き記して筆を置いています。「50それから、イエスは彼らをベタニヤの近くまで連れて行き、手をあげて彼らを祝福された。51祝福しておられるうちに、彼らを離れて、〔天にあげられた。〕52彼らは〔イエスを拝し、〕非常な喜びをもってエルサレムに帰り、53絶えず宮にいて、神をほめたたえていた」（ルカ２４章５０節－５２節）。

 ここでイエス様は自分が去っていくことはあなたたちにとって益となると言ったのです。なぜなら、去って行ったのなら、その代わりに「助け主」を送るからだというのです。聖書はこの助け主を「聖霊」と呼んでいるのです。

 そして、この聖霊について先に読みましたように、昇天するまさしくその直前にもイエス様はこう言われました「ただ、聖霊があなたがたにくだる時、あなたがたは力を受けて、エルサレム、ユダヤとサマリヤの全土、さらに地のはてまで、わたしの証人となるであろう」（使徒行伝１章８節）

 私達もこの聖霊のはたらきというものを意識しましょう。私達の日々の生活において、また教会のはたらきにおいて、聖霊がはたらいているのだということを信じましょう。イエス・キリストはこの聖霊を私達のもとに送るために天にのぼられたのですから・・・。イエスが天にのぼり、全能の父なる神の右に座したことの大切さ、その二つ目のことをです。それは「私達のためにとりなして下さる」ためです。

 私達のためにとりなしてくださる

この箇所は先週も読んだのですが、ローマ８章３１節から３９節を読んでみましょう。

31それでは、これらの事について、なんと言おうか。もし、神がわたしたちの味方であるなら、だれがわたしたちに敵し得ようか。32ご自身の御子をさえ惜しまないで、わたしたちすべての者のために死に渡されたかたが、どうして、御子のみならず万物をも賜わらないことがあろうか。33だれが、神の選ばれた者たちを訴えるのか。神は彼らを義とされるのである。34だれが、わたしたちを罪に定めるのか。キリスト・イエスは、死んで、否、よみがえって、神の右に座し、また、わたしたちのためにとりなして下さるのである。35だれが、キリストの愛からわたしたちを離れさせるのか。患難か、苦悩か、迫害か、飢えか、裸か、危難か、剣か。36「わたしたちはあなたのために終日、死に定められており、ほふられる羊のように見られている」と書いてあるとおりである。37しかし、わたしたちを愛して下さったかたによって、わたしたちは、これらすべての事において勝ち得て余りがある。38わたしは確信する。死も生も、天使も支配者も、現在のものも将来のものも、力あるものも、39高いものも深いものも、その他どんな被造物も、わたしたちの主キリスト・イエスにおける神の愛から、わたしたちを引き離すことはできないのである。 

このところから分かることは、イエス様が天に戻って行かれ、神様の右側に座しておられるということです。しかし、そこでただ座しておられるわけではないのです。その所で、イエス様は今も私たちのために神様にとりなしておられるというのです。

 「神の右に座している」ということについて、使徒信条はイエス・キリストのおられる場所を問題にしているのではなく、イエス・キリストの役目、役割を問題にしているのだと、ある神学者が述べておりますが私もそう思います。

「とりなす」という言葉はとても日本的な言葉です。その言葉には「仲裁する」とか「その場をうまくはからう」という意味があります。すなわちイエス様は神の右の座におり、この地で生きている私達が日々、直面する諸々の事柄に対して、神と私達の間にいるお方として、その神様の御目にかなう者として私達が生きることができるようにと私達のために祈っていてくださるというのです。

 時々私達は「悩みを一人で抱えないで」といいますが、その私達の問題や悩みについて、私達の失敗や、また私達が祈り願っていることについて、このイエス様は神の右の座において、父なる神様にとりなしてくださっているのです。先のパウロがなぜに患難、苦悩、迫害、飢え、裸、危難、剣のような試練に遭い、一日中、死に定められており、人が自分を見ればほふられた羊のように見られているにもかからわず、私達を愛してくださった方によって、それらすべての事において勝ち得て余りあると言っているのはそのためなのです。

 私達は毎週、早天祈祷会、水曜集会、木曜集会において祈りの課題をあげて祈っています。その場合、ほとんどの祈りは自分以外の人達のための祈りです。「あの方の病気が癒されますように」とか「この方がこのような状況から抜けられるように」というように祈ります。そのような祈りをイエス・キリストも父なる神の右の座でしていてくださるというのです。そして、それは天にかぎらず、イエス様がこの地上におられた時からその祈りは変わりませんでした。

ルカ２２章には十字架にかかる直前のイエス様とペテロとの会話が記されていますが、この状況はペテロがイエスのことを否む前のことで、そのことが起きることを予め知っていたイエス様は彼に向かってこういいます「シモン、シモン、見よ、サタンはあなたがたを麦のようにふるいにかけることを願って許された。しかし、わたしはあなたの信仰がなくならないように、あなたのために祈った。それで、あなたが立ち直った時には、兄弟たちを力づけてやりなさい」（３１節）。

 イエス様はご自身をこれから裏切ろうとするペテロに対して、ペテロの信仰がなくならないように彼のために祈られたのです。確かにその後、ペテロはふるいにかけられて、償いきれないほどの失敗を起こすのですが、そこから立ち直ったら、今度は兄弟たちを力づけてやるようにというのです。そして、このイエス様のとりなしにより、実際に彼は大きな挫折をしますが、兄弟たちを励ます存在として生きていくのです。

 皆さん、このイエス様の祈りはペテロのみならず、私達一人一人ののためにもイエス様は神の右の座において今も祈っていてくださるのです。まだ信仰を持っていない方、信仰を持っていても、ちょっと今は低空飛行かもしれないと自分でも分かっている方、かつては信仰を持っていたけれど、今はそれからも離れてしまっているという方、そのような方達、全ての人のためにイエスは祈っていてくださるのです。そして、祈るのみならず、そこから再び立ち上がることができるようになったら、今度はその挫折や不信仰という経験をも用いて、あなたの周りにいる兄弟姉妹を励ましてあげなさいというのです。

 行伝は初代の教会のキーパーソンとしてステパノという人について記しています。彼は「信仰と聖霊に満ちた人」（使徒行伝６章５節）で、イエスこそが神の子、キリストであるということを論じ、最終的には石で打たれて殉教します。なぜ、彼は石で打たれたのでしょうか、その時のことをルカはこう記録しています。

54人々はこれを聞いて、心の底から激しく怒り、ステパノにむかって、歯ぎしりをした。55しかし、彼は聖霊に満たされて、天を見つめていると、神の栄光が現れ、イエスが神の右に立っておられるのが見えた。56そこで、彼は「ああ、天が開けて、人の子が神の右に立っておいでになるのが見える」と言った。57人々は大声で叫びながら、耳をおおい、ステパノを目がけて、いっせいに殺到し、58彼を市外に引き出して、石で打った。これに立ち合った人たちは、自分の上着を脱いで、サウロという若者の足もとに置いた。59こうして、彼らがステパノに石を投げつけている間、ステパノは祈りつづけて言った、「主イエスよ、わたしの霊をお受け下さい」。60そして、ひざまずいて、大声で叫んだ、「主よ、どうぞ、この罪を彼らに負わせないで下さい」。こう言って、彼は眠りについた。（使徒行伝６章５４節－６０節）

人々は何を聞いて心の底から激しく怒り、ステパノに向かって歯ぎしりをしたのでしょう。今日は開きませんが、その前文においてステパノはアブラハムから始まるユダヤ民族の歴史を話し、それらが全てイエス・キリストに向かう道備えとなっていたのだということを語ったのです。そして、そのような歴史をもちながらも、心かたくなであった者達のことを論破したのです。

 それに対してまさしくステパノに飛びかからんばかりに怒っている者達の前で彼は聖霊に満たされて、天を見上げていますと、イエス・キリストが神の右の座に立っているのが見えたというのです。そして、そのことを「ああ、天が開けて、人の子が神の右に立っておいでになるのが見える」と口にしましたところ、彼に反していた者達はステパノに殺到し、石を投げつけて彼を殺したのです。

 皆さん、ステパノは激しく怒り、はぎしりをしている者達に取り囲まれていたのです。まさしく危機的な状況なのです。しかし、彼はそのような時に天を見上げたのです。そうしましたら、天が開けて、イエス様が神の右に立っておられるのを見たというのです。イエス様は座っておられたのではなくて、立っていたのです。まさしく、神の右の座でとりなしておられたイエス様もステパノの置かれた状況をご覧になり、その座から立ち上がってとりなしておられたのでしょうか。

 皆さん、私達も危機的な状況に置かれることがあり、私達も追い込まれていくことがあります。しかし、そのような時に天において主はステパノの時のように私達のために立ち上がり、私達の信仰が失われないように、その危機を乗り切ることができるようにと祈っていてくださる。私達にはそのイエスの姿が見えないかもしれない、しかし、ステパノがそれを直に見たように天が開けて、その先を見ることが私達にも許されるなら、私達には私達のためにとりなしていてくださるイエス様を見ることができるのです。

 自らのためにとりなしておられるイエス様を見上げたステパノは、もはやたとえ石で打たれようとも、その群集と同じ場所に立ってはいなかったのです。彼は自分に向かって石を投げつけている者達のためにこう祈ったのです「主よ、どうぞ、この罪を彼らに負わせないでください」こう言って彼は神のもとにかえっていったのです。

 皆さん、私達は使徒信条にありますイエス様が「おとめマリアより生まれた」とか、「ポンテオ・ピラトにより十字架につけられた」というような言葉は、それらがイエス様の生涯にとって大きな出来事ですから、大切なものとして、心に刻んでいるかもしれません。しかし、それらに比べ、この「天にのぼり全能の父なる神の右に座したまえり」いう言葉は何となく素通りしてしまうかもしれません。しかし、この一文以上に、イエス様が天にのぼられた後の今を生きる私達にとって重要な言葉はありません。

イエス様が天にのぼられたすぐ後にペテロは最初の長い説教をしています。その説教によりその日だけで仲間に加わった者が３０００人もいたという説教です。その中でペテロは早速こう言っています「このイエスを神はよみがえらせた。そして、わたしたちは皆、その証人なのである。それで、イエスは神の右に上げられ、父からの約束の聖霊を受けて、それをわたしたちに注がれたのである。このことはあなたがたが現に見聞きしているとおりである」（使徒行伝２章３２節－３３節）

イエスが神の右の座におられるということ、そこでとりなし、また聖霊をわたしたちの元に送ってくださっているということ、このことはパウロやステパノ、そしてペテロをはじめ、初代の教会の弟子達、使徒たちにとって最も大切なことでした。彼らはこのことに対する信仰ゆえに、たとえ目の前にいかなることが起きたとしても、それらを乗り越えていき、イエスが言われたように、この後、まさしくクリスチャニティーは地の果てまで伝えられていったのです。

そして、この時の聖霊は全く同じものとして、私達の上にも注がれているものです。そして、私達の主イエス・キリストは今も、後も永遠に神の右に座し、私達のためにとりなしていてくださるのです。お祈りしましょう。

What is Christ doing now?

“He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”

There is such a thing called concentrated fruit juice.  It is juice composed of condensed nutrition and the flavor of the fruit.  Similarly, the “Apostles Creed” we recited this morning is condensed words of the Christian faith; which is only composed with words we really need.  This Apostles Creed contains everything we believe and stand upon.  Now let us look at a few things.

We have been looking at the Apostles Creed.  “I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.  He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.”

When we read the creed up to this point, it seems as if Jesus Christ’s mission has been completed entirely.  In other words, we tend to think that there’s nothing more Christ can do because “Christmas” “Good Friday” and “Easter” which we are familiar with is already written here.

But in fact, the Bible does not end here.  There’s more to it.  That is why the Apostles Creed contains the words, “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”  Earlier I said that the Apostles Creed is the result of condensing the Bible, meaning, to keep only what is most important, and as it was most important, the words, “Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father” were kept in the Apostles Creed.  Today I’d like to talk about two reasons for the importance of Jesus ascending into heaven and sitting at the right hand of the Father.  The fist point is, “To send us a helper.”

To Send Us a Helper

 Luke, who wrote Jesus’ demeanor in “the Book of Luke” marks the end of the book with these words: “50 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God.” (Luke 24:50-53)

These words document that Jesus was crucified then ascended into heaven as he was resurrected. 

As we say, if it ends well, all is well, yay happy ending, Jesus’ ending seems like a happy one because according to this passage, His disciples saw He was carried up into heaven, therefore returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God.  It says Jesus blessed his disciples and they saw Jesus being carried up into heaven, so I would think that they should just live their life with the surprise and delight as an initiator.  Luke put his pen down when he finished the Book of Luke, but took in hand his pen once again to write “Acts.”  Here, it talks about what I read earlier in Luke, but in more detail.

6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:6-11)

Luke must have noticed one thing as he learned these things.  Yes, Jesus is no longer before us because He has ascended into heaven.  However, the work of Christ doesn’t end here.  As witnesses we are to tell our local and regional people these things Jesus has said and done, even to the end of the earth.  And as the angle said, as Jesus ascended, he will come in like manner once again.  Jesus ascending into heaven was not the end, but undoubtedly the beginning.

As proof, Luke records the post ascension of Jesus as the book of Acts.  However, of all things, why does Jesus disappear before his disciples in a time where He is about to do something new?

The CEO of the computer company “Apple” is Steve Jobs.  He temporarily left his job due to a serious illness.  At the same time the stock prices became unstable.  However, once he restores his health the stocks recovers as well.  Even a human leader can create such a situation, so it must have been really bad when Jesus disappeared before his disciples.

 Actually, the disappearance of Jesus himself was already told directly by Jesus to his disciples a few times.  It says in John 16:7-8, 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.

Here Jesus says that going away will be an advantage to us.  It’s because going away means “a Helper” will be sent instead.  The Bible calls this helper the “Holy Spirit.”

And as we read earlier about the Holy Spirit, Jesus says right before his ascension to heaven, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

The fact that Jesus is with his disciples is very fascinating.  However, the meaning to this is that Jesus’ existence is limited to a group of people in a specific geographical region.  To become witnesses of Jesus, exceeding the limits of Jerusalem to Judea and the lands of Samaria, and to the end of the earth, the power from above, in other words, the power of the Holy Spirit which has no limit of time or place is a necessity.  The Holy Spirit is without these restrictions and is always with us.

As I told you earlier, the Book of Acts is written by Luke and is sometimes called, “the story of the Holy Spirit” in Japanese.  This name is totally suitable for this book.  Why, because Acts is filled with “various works.”  These works were done through the evangelism of disciples and apostles.  The first church was born, people gathered in the church, the church was formed, and eventually went beyond Judea and Samaria, and as Jesus said, spread throughout the world.  At a glance, this seems like the work of man, but the work of the Holy Spirit is actually behind all this; this is the Book of Acts.

The word, “Helper” which refers to the Holy Spirit is called “Paraclete” in Greek, which means “someone who helps beside you.”  The Holy Spirit is not only pushing forward in the work of evangelism, it also helps us by being by our side always.  Although Jesus is not around us in a visible form, Christ is with us through the Holy Spirit at all times.

Let us become aware of this work of the Holy Spirit.  Let us believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in our daily lives and at church, because Jesus Christ ascended into heaven to send us the Holy Spirit.  The second point to the importance of Jesus ascending into heaven and sitting at the right hand of the Father is that “He intercedes for us.”

He intercedes for us

We’ve read this passage last week, but let us take a look at Romans 8:31-39.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What we get from this is that Jesus returned to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  However, He is not just sitting there.  There, Jesus intercedes to God for us even now.

Regarding “Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father,” one theologian says that, in the Apostles Creed, the question is not the place Jesus Christ is, but the role, in other words, the duty of Jesus Christ.  I too agree to this.

The word “intercede” is a very Japanese word.  This word means “peacemaker” or “mediator.”  In other words, Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father, and He, as the one who is between God and us, and as the one who meets God’s standards, prays for us so that we may live our daily lives on this earth while we face many things.

Sometimes we say “don’t carry troubles alone,” but Jesus, as the one who sits at the right hand of God, is being an intercessor to God the Father for us, regarding our problems, troubles, failures and prayers.  This is the reason why Paul says in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us, regardless of facing trials such as tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword and being killed all day long; and being accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

Each week we raise prayer requests and pray at our Early Morning prayer meetings, and Wednesday and Thursday gatherings.  In which case, most of the prayers are directed towards other people.  We pray saying, “may his/her be healed” or “may he/she be free from certain situation.”  Jesus Christ too, prays those prayers at the right hand of the Father.  And this prayer is not only limited to when He is in heaven, but did not change even when Jesus was on earth.

Luke 22 records Jesus and Peter’s conversation right before the crucifiction.  This was before Peter denies Jesus, and Jesus who knew this in advance tells Peter, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” (Luke 22:31)

Jesus prays for Peter who is about to betray Jesus himself, that Peter’s faith may not fail.  After this, Peter does indeed sift, causing a failure that cannot be atoned for, yet, Jesus says when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.  And as Jesus said, Peter does really fail, but becomes an encouraging existence to his brethren.

This does not only apply to Peter, but Jesus prays for each and every one of us at the right hand of God even at this moment.  Jesus prays for all of us, even for those who do not yet have faith, those who might have little faith, and for those who previously had faith, but have lost it.  Not only does He pray, but once we have returned to Him, He tells us to make use of our failures and lack of faith to encourage our brothers and sisters around us.

Stephen is mentioned in Acts as a key person of the first generation church.  He was “a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5) who at the end is stoned as a martyr because he argued that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God.  Why was he stoned?  Luke records it as follows:

54 When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord, Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep. (Acts 7:54-60)

What did the people hear that made them furious from the bottom of their heart and gnash their teeth at Stephen?  Although we will not open the passage today, he talks about the Jewish history starting at Abraham, and that all that laid the foundation for Jesus Christ to come.  And he refutes those who have hardened their hearts even after hearing this history.

Right when those furious people ran towards Stephen, he is filled with the Holy Spirit, and when he looks into the heavens, he says he saw Jesus Christ standing at the right hand of God.  And when he said this aloud, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” those who were against him ran towards him a stoned him to death.

Stephen was surrounded by people who were furious and gnashed their teeth.  He was certainly in a situation of crisis.  However, in a time like this, he looked up into the heavens.  Then the heavens opened and he saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God.  Jesus was not sitting but standing.  Jesus who had mediated as he sat at the right hand of God must have stood up and mediated as he saw Stephen in such a situation.

There are times when we too are driven in a corner and placed critical situations.  However, at such times, our Lord in heaven stands up, as He did with Stephen, and prays for us so we may not lose faith and so that we may overcome that crisis.  We may not see Jesus do so, but if we were allowed to see the heavens open and see beyond it, as Stephen directly saw, we will be able to see Jesus who mediates for us.   

 When Stephen saw Jesus mediating for himself, although he was being stoned, he was no longer in the same place as the others.  Stephen prayed for those who were stoning him saying, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.”  After praying this, he goes home to God.

We may engrave in our hearts, the words in the Apostles Creed like, “He was born of the Virgin Mary” and “He suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was crucified” because they were significant events in Jesus’ life.  Compared to those, the words, “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father” may be easily bypassed.  However, no other words are more important to us than these words, for us who lives a life today, after Jesus ascended into heaven.

Right after Jesus ascended into heaven, Peter gives his first long sermon.  This was the sermon that brought three thousand to Christ in that one day.  In his sermon, Peter promptly says, “This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear” (Acts 2:32-33).

Starting with Paul, Stephen and Peter, Jesus sitting and mediating at the right hand of God, and sending the Holy Spirit to us, was the most important thing for the disciples and apostles of the first generation church.  Because of this faith, they were able to over come anything that came before them, and as Jesus said, after this, Christianity was spread through the ends of the earth.

The exact same Holy Spirit I talk about here is also being poured on us.  And our Lord Jesus Christ will and forever more sit at the right hand of God and mediate for us.  Let us pray.

２）ルカ２４章５０節－５３節を読みましょう。天にあげられたイエス・キリストを見た彼らは非常な喜びをもち、絶えず宮にいて神をほめたたえていました。この喜びはその後、何十年、何百年も持続するものですか？なぜ、持続しませんか？

 

 ３）ヨハネ１６章７節－８節を読みましょう。ここにはイエス様と入れ替わるかのように「助け主・聖霊」が人々の上に聖霊が注がれると書かれています。なぜ、この聖霊がきたら「罪と義とさばきとについて、世の人の目を開く」（８節）のでしょうか。聖霊がなければそのようなことは起きないのですか？なぜですか？

  

４）ローマ８章３１節から３９節を読んでみましょう。３４節には「キリスト・イエスは、死んで、否、よみがえって、神の右に座し、また、わたしたちのためにとりなして下さるのである」と記されていますが、神様がわたしたちのために祈っていてくださるということを知る時にあなたはどんな思いとなりますか？

 

５）ルカ２２章３１節を読みましょう。イエス様が私達が信仰を失いかけてしまうような時にも祈っていてくださるという事実を知る時に私たちはどんな思いをもちますか？
