私達は自分に良かれと思い、家族に良かれと思い、教会に良かれと思い、会社に良かれと思い、自らの経験や、その時の状況や、集めた知恵、知識を動員させて色々なことをします。
自分に良かれと考え、仕事を選びます。家族に良かれと考え、ある土地に引っ越していきます。教会に良かれと考え、新しいミニストリーを始めます。会社に良かれと考え、投資をします。これらは自らの頭と心で考えられ決められます。当初願いましたように、それが実際に自分に、家族に、教会に、会社に良いものとなります。その仕事はやりがいのあるもので、その土地は家族にとって最善の場となり、そのミニストリーは兄弟姉妹を霊的に引き上げ、その投資は会社に大きな利益を与えるからです。
しかし、いつも事はそのようにうまくいくことばかりではありません。言わずとも私達はそのことを知っています。自分で選んだ仕事でありながら、いつもその仕事を辞めることばかりを考え、新しい土地に住みながら、家族が皆バラバラとなり、始めたミニストリーがかえって問題を引き起こし、その投資によって会社に大きな損失を与えてしまうということです。良かれと思って自分の経験や知識を総動員して決意して実行したことが完全ではないことを私達は日々、体験します・・・。

信頼と共に、この道を行く
箴言３章５節－６節

この箴言はイスラエル三代目の王、ソロモンによって書かれました。ソロモンは神様から普通の人が持ちえないほど多くの知恵を与えられ、その名声が周辺諸国にまで聞こえた王として有名で、彼はその知恵を箴言以外に、伝道の書にも記したのですが、その中でこう言っています『わたしは心をつくし、知恵を用いて、天が下に行われるすべてのことを尋ね、また調べた』（伝道の書１章１３節）。この言葉から分かることは彼が尋ね求め、調べたことの範囲は天の下に起きている全てのことであったということです。すなわちそれは自らの個人的な生活から、彼が統治する自国民の間に起きている事、そして近隣諸国の状況、それら全ての中でそこに起きていることを彼はつぶさに尋ね、調べたというのです。
そして、その探求の中で彼がいたった一つの結論が今日、これから見てまいります箴言３章５節－６節の言葉なのです。すなわち、『心を尽くして主に信頼せよ。自分の知識に頼ってはならない。すべての道で主を認めよ。そうすれば、主はあなたの道をまっすぐにされる』（箴言３章５節―６節）。今日はこのところから四つのことを見ていきたいと願っております。まず最初に「心を尽くして主に信頼せよ」ということです。
心を尽くして主に信頼せよ。
彼のもとには多くの人がその知恵を求めてやってきました。彼は自分の身に起こる問題のみならず、多くの人達の生涯に起きる問題を聞いたに違いありません。また彼は一国の王ですから、自分の国で起きていることに常に注意を払わなければならず、それのみか近隣諸国の動向についても目を離すことができないという立場にいました。文字通り、天の下において行われている問題、課題、警戒に彼は常に目を注ぎ、それらのことを尋ね、また調べたのです。
ソロモンがその一身に背負わなければならないことは多くありました。彼とて人間、色々なことに悩み、考え、祈り、悩み、祈り、考え・・・、その中で行き着いたことが「心を尽くして主に信頼する」ということだったのです。それは彼が誰かから教えられたことではなく、書物によって知ったことでもなく、自らの人生の実生活の中で悟った最も大切なことだったのでしょう。
先週もお話しましたように、私達が会ったこともないかつてのイスラエルの王からこのような言葉を今日、受けることができますことはなんというさいわいでしょうか。おそらく私達以上に世の諸々のものを見聞きし、そのために彼に与えられている知恵をもって諸々の対処をすることができたであろうソロモンが最終的には「わたしは心を尽くして主に信頼する」と言っている、この彼の体験から生まれた言葉を私達は素通りすべきではないと思いますが、いかがでしょうか。
そもそも「信頼」とは何でしょうか。私達はどのようにして互いに「信頼」を構築することができるのでしょうか。一つ一つの約束事を守ることにより、互いに正直であることにより、互いに助け合うというようなことがなされ、こつこつと互いの信頼は築き上げられ、育まれていくことでしょう。たった今、出会った者同士の間で信頼が生まれることはありませんでしょう。それは瞬時に築き上げられるものではなく、そのためにはそれなりの時間が必要になるからです。ソロモンと神様との関係も例外ではなく「このお方は心を尽くして信頼するのに足るお方なのだ」という思いを彼はきっと父ダビデに神様がどのように関わってくださったということまでも遡り、さらに自分のそれまでの人生を振り返り、日々の諸々の出来事に対して彼を見守り、彼を祝福してくださる神様との関係の中で悟ったに違いありません。
信頼の土台となるものは何でしょうか。それは神様がソロモンに対して常に真実であられたということでした。「真実」という言葉ほどその内に力をもった言葉はありません。真実とは相手の最善を常に願うということです。真実というのはいつも相手の願っていることに同意し、うなづくということではありません。へブル１２章５節－７節にはこう書かれています。『また子たちに対するように、あなたがたに語られたこの勧めの言葉を忘れている、「わたしの子よ、主の訓練を軽んじてはいけない。主に責められるとき、弱り果ててはならない。
主は愛する者を訓練し、受けいれるすべての子を、むち打たれるのである」。あなたがたは訓練として耐え忍びなさい。
神はあなたがたを、子として取り扱っておられるのである。いったい、父に訓練されない子があるだろうか』
この聖書の言葉に従いますのなら、本当に子のことを思い、その将来を思う親は子供に訓戒を与えるだろうということであり、それは親の子に対する真実な愛を示しています。ですから、私達と神様との間の信頼関係というのは、神様が私達によきことをしてくださったということと同時に、私達を愛するがために厳しい訓戒をも与えてくださっているということ、その父なる神の真実に信頼することなのです。テモテ書に『たとい、わたしたちは不真実であっても、彼は常に真実である。彼は自分を偽ることが、できないのである』（テモテ第二の手紙２章１３節）と書かれていますように神様はご自身を偽ることができないお方、たとえ私達は不真実であってもこのお方は常に真実なお方です。
確かに私達がこれまでの人生を振り返れば、自分の願い通りにならなかったことがたくさんあったことでしょう。それゆえに不信仰に陥るようなこともあったかもしれません。それでは神様は信頼できないお方なのか。いいえ、その時は分からずとも、後になって私達があの事、この事と思い返すならば、神様は確かに真実であられたということが分かってくるのです。それらを一つ、また一つと経験していくことにより、私達の神様への信頼は育まれていくのです。二つ目のこと、それは「自分の知識に頼ってはならない」ということです。
自分の知識に頼ってはならない。
ソロモンは心を尽くして主を信頼せよと言い、その後に自分の知識に頼ってはならないと言いました。英語訳を見るならば、自分の理解（understanding）、洞察力（insight）、知識（intelligence）、物の見方（perception）に頼るなというのです。そうではなく、心を尽くして、あなたの全ての心をもって、主に信頼せよというのです。このことは理解しようとするな、洞察しようとするな、知識を得ようとするな、考えるなということではありません。そうです、それに完全に頼りきるなということです。
これは驚くべきことです。なぜなら、ソロモンは御存じのように普通の人が持ちえない知恵というものを神様からいただいた人間だったからです。その知恵を聞くために国民も他国の王さえも彼を訪ねてきたのです。しかし、その彼が言うのです「自分の知識に頼ってはならない」と。
言い方を変えましょう。「自分の知識に頼ってはならない」ということは別の言い方ができます。それは「自分は人間であることを忘れてはならない」ということです。私達人間の歴史において「絶対と思われるもの」が何度、取り消されてきたことでしょうか。
私達は自分に良かれと思い、家族に良かれと思い、教会に良かれと思い、会社に良かれと思い、自らの経験や、その時の状況や、集めた知恵、知識を動員させて色々なことをします。

三浦綾子さんがその著書にある婦人のことを書いています。その方はとても有能な方でいわゆる入学難関と言われる大学を卒業し、問題なく就職し、そこでも仕事を確実にこなし高い評価を得ます。やがて結婚し、子供ができ、仕事からは一時、離れ子育てに専念します。その時から彼女はそれまでの人生に経験したことがないことを経験するようになります。そうです、全く無力な一人の赤子の前でそれが起きたのです。会社で通用していたことが、我が子には全く通用しないことに気がつきます。事前に育児書は何冊も読み、出産とは育児とはという知識は全部、頭に入っています。しかし、実際に我が子の前に自分の知識とかそれまでの人生経験は役に立たないということに気がつかされるのです。これは一人の子を持つ母としての序章です。その子が育っていくにあたり、彼女は自分の知識では太刀打ちできないことに日々、直面していくでしょう。これらのことを通して、彼女は聖書を開くようになり、やがてクリスチャンとなります。
私達の身体には頭脳が与えられ、そこで考え、学習し、記憶するということがなされるのですから、神様は私達が知識をもつことをよしとしてくださっています。しかし、その自分の知識だけに頼るなということをソロモンは悟ったのです。人は常に間違える者、行き詰まる者、過ちを犯しかねない者なのだということを彼は知っていたのです。命について、死について、憎しみについて、私達はあまりにも知らないことが多いのです。
イザヤはこの私達の思いとは異なる神様の思いについて語っています。『8わが思いは、あなたがたの思いとは異なり、わが道は、あなたがたの道とは異なっていると主は言われる。
9天が地よりも高いように、わが道は、あなたがたの道よりも高く、わが思いは、あなたがたの思いよりも高い』（イザヤ５５章８節、９節）。私達が思うこと、私達が有する知識、神の思いは、神の知恵はそれよりもさらにさらに広く、高いものです。ゆえに私達は己が知識に頼らずに、このお方に信頼するのです。三つめのこと、それは「すべての道で主を認めよ」ということです。
すべての道で主を認めよ。
「道」と訳されたへブル語は旧約聖書の中に７０６回出てきます。お分かりのように、その道とは実際の道ではありません。聖書に記されている「道」とは霊的な旅路のことを意味し、「その旅路で起こることの中にはいつも主が共にいること」を認めなさいということです。
「すべての道で主を認めよ」というのは、「すべての道で起きたことの原因は神にある」ということではありません。「あの時に起きたあの辛い出来事、その原因は神様だったのだ」ということではありません。率直に申し上げなければなりませんが、その出来事の原因は私達自身だったのかもしれませんし、私達の周りにいる人だったのかもしれませんし、あるいはこの世界にはたらいている重力によって起きたのかもしれません最初の人、アダムとイブが自らの罪の責任転嫁をしたように、私達は隙あらば自分の過ちを人のせいにしようとする性質があります。そのことでかろうじて自らの面目を保とうとするのです。
そうではなく「すべての道で主を認める」ということは「その道に主が共におられる」ということであり、そのことを私達が認めるということです。旧約聖書中、ヤコブという人がいました。彼は父と兄を騙して兄から殺害されそうになり家を追われます。それは神様の責任ではなく、彼がしてしまったことに対して、彼が刈り取らなければならないことでした。彼が家を逃げてきたその最初の晩に一人、石をとって枕として眠りにつきました。彼の心には孤独感や怒り、後悔というような思いが何度もよぎっていったことでしょう。なかなか寝つかれず、それでもウトウトとし始めた頃でしょうか、彼は夢を見、その中で神様は彼に語りかけました。
「わたしはあなたの父アブラハムの神、イサクの神、主である。あなたが伏している地を、あなたと子孫とに与えよう。
14あなたの子孫は地のちりのように多くなって、西、東、北、南にひろがり、地の諸族はあなたと子孫とによって祝福をうけるであろう。15わたしはあなたと共にいて、あなたがどこへ行くにもあなたを守り、あなたをこの地に連れ帰るであろう。わたしは決してあなたを捨てず、あなたに語った事を行うであろう」（創世記２８章１３節－１５節）。
ヤコブは眠りからさめて言います「まことに主がこの所におられるのに、わたしは知らなかった」。（創世記２８章１６節）。
昨晩までは家の中に伏すことができたのに、その日に彼は石の枕で眠る身となりました。もう帰れる家は彼にはないのです。それは彼がなしたことに対する結果です。しかし、その彼に主はあらわれて、夢の中で彼に言われました「わたしはあなたと共にいて、あなたがどこへ行くにもあなたを守り、あなたをこの地に連れ帰るであろう。わたしは決してあなたを捨てず、あなたに語ったことを行なうであろう」
ヤコブは夢から覚めてこう言ったのです「まことに主がこの所におられるのに、わたしは知らなかった」。ヤコブは逃亡してきた自分と主が共におられるということなど考えもしなかったのです。ある意味、ヤコブにとって最悪の晩です。自己嫌悪にさいなまれたかもしれませんし、父や兄に対する怒りを持ち続けていたかもしれません。しかし、その時に主が共におられることを知りました。さらに、その時のみならず、これからも自分がどこに行く時にもこの主が共におられるということを彼は知ったのです。
私達がこれから歩いていく人生の旅路、何が起こるか分かりません。そして、これまで歩んできたその道のりを振り返る時に、今も理解できないことがあるでしょう。しかし、私達はこの道で主を認めていくのです。「主はそこにおられた。主は今、私と共におられる」ということを私達はこれからの人生の歩みの中で数多く見出していくのです。最後のこと、それは「主はあなたの道をまっすぐにされる」ということです。
そうすれば、主はあなたの道をまっすぐにされる。
「道がまっすぐにされる」ということはどういうことなのでしょうか。それは私達を健康に、裕福にするということではありません。あなたを有名にするとか、快適にさせるとか、悲劇やトラブルが免れるということ、あなたの願っていることが皆叶うということではありません。
その意味は神様があなたに歩むべき方向と目的を与えられるということであり、また同時に神様ご自身がその道から外れないようにと私達を訓戒し、導いてくださるということです。そして、その道は確実に最後、行き着くべきところにつながっているということです。詩篇の記者は言っています。
『2主にあがなわれた者は言え。主は彼らを悩みからあがない、3もろもろの国から、東、西、北、南から彼らを集められた。4彼らは人なき荒野にさまよい、住むべき町にいたる道を見いださなかった。5彼らは飢え、またかわき、その魂は彼らのうちに衰えた。6彼らはその悩みのうちに主に呼ばわったので、主は彼らをその悩みから助け出し、7住むべき町に行き着くまで、まっすぐな道に導かれた。8どうか、彼らが主のいつくしみと、人の子らになされたくすしきみわざとのために、主に感謝するように。9主はかわいた魂を満ち足らせ、飢えた魂を良き物で満たされるからである』（詩篇１０７篇２節－９節）。
かつては自分の道がどこに続くのか分からず、それゆえに四方八方に私達は向かっていた。その道を導いてくれる者もおらず、荒野にさまよったこともあった。ゆえにその心は飢え、かわき、魂はうちに衰えた。そのことを何度も繰り返し、そしていよいよ天に向かって呼ばわった。「俺を何とかしてくれ。俺はどこに向かっているんだ。この渇きは何なんだ」と。主はその声を聴き届け、わたしのために既に備えられている、わたしが住むべき街にわたしを導かれた。その道を歩き始めた時、私の魂は満ち足り、飢えた魂はその道すがらに手に入れることができる良きもので満たされた。
ソロモンはその生涯、たくさんの人間を見てきたことでしょう。そこから一つの教訓を得ました。こういう教訓です。『人が見て自ら正しいとする道でも、その終りはついに死に至る道となるものがある』（箴言１４章１２節）。自分の前を多くの人間が通り過ぎていった。これが俺が生きる道と意気揚々、彼らは旅立っていった。しばらくして楽観できない状況にいる彼、彼女の風の便りが届く・・・それは決して彼らが望んでいたものではなかった。
先にお話したヤコブの人生はあの夢の後にも続きます。この後も色々な問題が起こり、彼は葛藤します。私達信仰者は信仰をもった時から問題がなくなるということではありません。もしかしたら、さらに多くの問題に向き合うことになるかもしれません。しかし、その時に私達の拠り所となることは、私達が確かに神様が備えたもうた道を歩んでいるのだという確信です。その道から外れることなく歩んでいくのなら、私達はいかなる困難をも乗り越え、私達がおるところへと導かれていくことができるのです。
新しい年、私達の前に賢者と呼ばれたソロモンの言葉があります。『心を尽くして主に信頼せよ。自分の知識に頼ってはならない。すべての道で主を認めよ。そうすれば、主はあなたの道をまっすぐにされる』
私達がこの言葉をその心に刻むのなら、この一年、わたしたちはこの言葉によって救われることを何度も経験することでしょう。その道は主が備えた道、主が私達と共にいます。この主の真実さゆえに私達は全幅の信頼を主に起き、自らの知識だけに寄り頼むことなく、このお方と共に今日も明日も歩いていくのです。お祈りしましょう。
Trust in the Lord in all your ways
Proverbs 3:5-6

This book of Proverbs was written by Solomon, the third King of Israel. Solomon was granted vast amount of wisdom from God, and his wisdom was known among neighboring nations. He recorded his wisdom not only in the Proverbs, but in Ecclesiastes also, where he said: “I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens.” (Ecclesiastes 1:13) He applied his wisdom to study and explore everything under the heaven. He explored everything ranging from his personal life, events taking place among the people in his nation and in the neighboring nations.
And, after his study and exploration, he reached one conclusion which is expressed in today’s scripture reading, Proverbs Chapter 3 Verses 5-6. Namely, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) This morning, I would like to talk about four key points. The first is “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
Many people came to him for his insights and wisdom. These people asked his guidance on not only their own problems, but all kinds of problems seen in his nation. Solomon was a king. So, he had to worry about problems in his own country, as well as any problems happening in his neighboring nations. He had to look over and explore, all of the problems, issues, and warning signs under the heaven.
So many issues and challenges were put on the shoulders of Solomon. Solomon was after all a mere mortal. He agonized, contemplated, prayed, agonized, prayed, and contemplated. And he came to realize through his own personal experience that it is most important to trust in the Lord in all of his ways.
As I pointed out last week, we are so lucky that we can listen to these words of a king of Israel, whom we have never met. God granted this Solomon with abundant wisdom. Solomon has seen and experienced many issues of this world. And, his personal conclusion was that we must trust in the Lord with all our hearts. I must say that we should listen to him humbly.
Then, what is this “trust” he is talking about? What should we do to be able to trust each other? This trust is built up step by step. We must honor promises we make. We must be honest to each other. We must offer help to others when needed. Trust does not pop up suddenly between strangers. Trust is not created instantaneously. Trust must be built up over a long period of time. The relationship between Solomon and God was not an exception, either. Solomon must have come to trust in God by studying how God had interacted with David, his father, as well as looking back on Solomon’s own experience through his life, in which God had watched over him, blessed him, and protected him at every moment.
What was the foundation of this trust? It was based on God’s attitude, namely, God was always true to Solomon. To be true. This is a powerful statement. To be true means to hope for the best for that person. To be true does not mean to condone and agree with every wish of the other person. Hebrews Chapter 12 verses 5-7 say: “And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, ‘My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.’ Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?”
These words of the Bible tell us that if we truly think of children and wish the best for them, then we should discipline them, because that is the true expression of love. Our relationship with God is the same. God is good to us, but at the same time, God disciplines us because God loves us. This shows that God is true to us and we must trust him in return. Listen to what Timothy says: “[Even] if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” (II Timothy 2:13) God is true to us all the time, even when we are not faithful to him because God cannot disown himself.
When we look back on our own life, we realized that there were many occasions when our wishes were not realized. And at those moments, our faith could have wavered. Is God not trustworthy because we were disappointed? No, we often realize much later, in our hindsight, that God has been true to us even in those moments. Our trust toward God is built up with each of these experiences. The second point is that we should not lean on our own understanding.
Lean not on your own understanding
Solomon said that we should trust God with all our heart, and also said not to lean on our own understanding. It means that we should not lean on our own understanding, our insight, our intelligence, or on our perception. It means that we should, instead, trust in the Lord with all our heart. It does not say that we should not try to understand, to seek insight, to obtain knowledge, or to think on our own. Rather, he said that we should not put too much focus on them.
This is unexpected, especially since as you know, Solomon was blessed with abundant wisdom from God. His wisdom was far superior to others. People of his own country and of other nations used to come to Solomon to listen to his wisdom. But, this Solomon said: “Do not lean on one’s understanding.”
Let me rephrase this. “Do not lean on your own understanding” means “Do not forget that you are a human.” Too often in our human history, what was once considered to be absolute had turned out not to be.
We think best for ourselves, for our family, for our church, and our company. Based on such good intention, and based on our own experience and our own wisdom, we take many actions.
We choose the best profession. We move to a new land for the good of our family. We start a new ministry for the good of the church. We invest in the best of our corporation. These decisions are based on our own head and heart. Some of the time, these turn out to be good for us, for our family, and for our company. The profession turns out to be rewarding, the new land turns out to be wonderful, the ministry provides spiritually uplifting experience, and the investment brings great profit.
But, things do not turn out the way we desire all the time. We know from our experience. We wish we had not chosen that profession. The new land turns out to break up our family unity. The new ministry brought about nothing but headache. And that investment drained funds and caused great loss to the company. Our intentions are good. We base our decision on our own experience and intelligence. But, such decisions turn out to be imperfect.
Writer Ayako Miura, in one of her books, wrote about one lady. She was bright and intelligent. She graduated from a prestigious university and found a good job and excelled in her profession. Later, she was married, had a baby, and took temporary leave to raise her baby. From that time on, however, she faced many challenges she had never faced before. This was brought about because of her helpless baby. She realized that her work experience was of no use to raising a baby. She had studied many books on baby and child-raising. But, when she actually faced her baby, she realized that her knowledge and her life experience offered no help. Any mother of a new baby faces such experience. As the baby grows day by day, the mother realizes that her own knowledge is so powerless. By experiencing such reality, this lady was lead to open the Bible, and eventually became a Christian.
We have our brain, with which we think, learn, and accumulate knowledge. God considers that it is good for us to have knowledge. But, Solomon learned that he should not lean on his own understanding. He realized that we make mistakes, we face dead-ends, and we make errors. We know too little about our life, death, and hatred. Our knowledge is so limited.
Isaiah talks about thoughts of God, which is different from our own thoughts. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) Our thoughts and our knowledge are limited. God’s thoughts and God’s knowledge are far wider and higher. That is why we should not lean on our own knowledge and we should rather trust in God. The third point is submitting to God in all our ways.
In all your ways submit to him
The word “ways” shows up a total of 706 times in the Old Testament. As you can see these “ways” are not physical “roads”. The “ways” stated in the Bible refer to spiritual journeys. This scripture says to recognize the presence of God throughout your life journey.
To recognize the presence of God in all our ways does not mean that the cause of every occurrence in our life is God. It does not say those painful experiences of life were caused by God. We must admit honestly that those events were brought about because of our own doing, or because of the people around us, or because of the forces surrounding us in this world. Remember that the first human beings, Adam and Eve, tried to blame others for their sins. We tend to blame others for our own mistakes. We try to save our “face” by doing so.
“To submit to the Lord in all our ways” means that God is with us in all our ways and that we must admit that. Jacob is a character in the Old Testament. He deceived his father and brother, and he was ousted from the family. This was not caused by God’s doing. It was Jacob’s doing, for which he had to be responsible. On the first night after he ran away from home, he used a rock for his pillow and fell asleep. His mind must have been filled with loneliness, anger, and regret. He could not fall asleep easily. But, when he finally dozed off, he saw a dream. In this dream God talked to Jacob.
There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 1Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” (Genesis 28: 13-15) When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” (Genesis 28:16)
Up until the night before he had his bed at home. But, he was forced to sleep with a rock for his pillow this night. He had no home to go back to. This was the result of his own doing. But, the Lord appeared to him and said, in his dream: “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said: “Surely the Lord is here, but I was not aware of it.” Jacob, who was on a run, could not imagine that the Lord was with him. This first night was difficult for Jacob. He was depressed from a feeling of regret, and he was still angry toward his father and brother. But, at that very moment, he realized that the Lord was with him. Not only that, he knew that the Lord would be with him, from that time on, wherever he might go.
As we make our life’s journey, we do not know what would happen. And, when we look back on our days gone by, there could be many things we cannot understand. But, we must admit that the Lord was, is, and will be with us. “Surely the Lord was with me. And, the Lord is with me now.” We will realize this on many occasions in our life. The final point is: “The Lord will make your paths straight.”
And he will make your paths straight.
What does it mean to make our paths straight? It does not mean that we will be made healthy and rich. It does not mean all of wishes will be heard. You are not going to be famous, wealthy, and you are not guaranteed to be free from troubles and tragedy.
Rather, it means that the Lord will show the direction and the purpose of your life, and that the Lord will discipline and guide us so that we would not stray away from the course. It means that this road will surely take us to the final destination. The Psalm says: “Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” (Psalm 107:2-9)
We did not know where the journey would take us. We used to wander around aimlessly. There was no one guiding us, and we were lost in the wilderness. Our heart was hungry and thirsty. Our spirit was weak. After many such experiences, we shouted to the heaven in desperation: “Do something. Where are we headed? What is this thirst?” The Lord heard our cry, and guided us to the place which he had already prepared for us. When we started walking toward that place, our spirit was provided with nutrition and was filled with goodness.
Solomon must have observed many people in his life. He learned one lesson from that experience. And that was: “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12) He saw many people going out on their journey, filled with confidence and great hope. But, later, he heard news that these people were facing difficulties, something they never wanted or hoped for.
The life of Jacob continued after that night of the dream. He faced many problems and he struggled. We believers should not expect that our faith would free us from problems. Our faith might even bring more challenges. But, in those times, we should depend on the firm conviction that we are walking the road that God had prepared for us. As long as we stay the course, we can overcome any difficulties, and we will be guided to the right destination.
This is a new year. Solomon, the wise, is speaking to us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
As long as we remember these words in heart, we will be saved many times throughout this year with these words. This is the road the Lord had prepared for us. The Lord is with us. The Lord is true to us. We trust in him completely, and we will not lean on our knowledge only. Let us walk with the Lord today and tomorrow. Let us pray.
