蛇を好む人はあまりいません。多くの人は蛇を怖がります。なぜ人は蛇を怖がるのでしょうか。人間が蛇を恐れるのは先天的、すなわち生まれる前から私達がもっているものなのでしょうか。それとも生後の経験による学習なのでしょうか。このようなことを考える人は私以外に世の中にもおりまして『なぜ、人間は蛇が嫌いか』（正高信男著 光文社）という本を書かれた方がいます。その本にはこのテーマについて猿を使ってなされた実験が記されています。それによりますと実験室で生まれてから、蛇に遭遇したことが全くない猿は蛇を見ても怖がらず、実験室の外で生まれ、蛇を恐れている猿を一目でも見た猿は必ず蛇への恐れをもつということが分かりました。すなわち蛇を見たことのない猿は、仲間が蛇を恐れているのを見て、蛇は怖いという概念を獲得したのです。
このような学習は猿のみならず、私達も常にしていることです。私達は見聞きすることにより学習し、それによって私達は影響を受け、造られていきます。私達の内に入ってくるものにより、私達は色々なことを考え、決断します。これらのものにより、私達、各々が歩む人生の筋道ができあがっていきます。またその入ってきたものが私達の人格をも作り上げていきます。

あなたの心を守りなさい
箴言４章２３節－２７節

ソロモンの箴言を見ています。そこには神様がイスラエル三代目の王、ソロモンに与えた知恵が書かれています。その知恵は私達の生活にそくしたもので、私達が日々の生活をどのようにして生きたらいいのかということを教えてくれます。今日、見てまいりますのは箴言４章の言葉です。
『20わが子よ、わたしの言葉に心をとめ、わたしの語ることに耳を傾けよ。21それを、あなたの目から離さず、あなたの心のうちに守れ。22それは、これを得る者の命であり、またその全身を健やかにするからである。23油断することなく、あなたの心を守れ、命の泉は、これから流れ出るからである。24曲った言葉をあなたから捨てさり、よこしまな談話をあなたから遠ざけよ。25あなたの目は、まっすぐに正面を見、あなたのまぶたはあなたの前を、まっすぐに見よ。26あなたの足の道に気をつけよ、そうすれば、あなたのすべての道は安全である。27右にも左にも迷い出てはならない、あなたの足を悪から離れさせよ』（箴言４章２０節‐２７節）。
この箴言を注意深く読みますと気がつくことがあります。そうです、ここには人間の身体の器官が記されています。すなわち最初に「耳」と「目」が記されています。そうです、それは「聞く」ことと「見る」ことを司る器官です。そして、次に出て来るのが器官として手に取ったり、見ることができない「心」です。そして、最後に「口」があり、「足」があり、これらは私達の内にあるものが実際の言動となって出ていく器官です。これらのことを覚えて今日は三つのことをお話します。まず最初に「私達の内に入ってくるもの」ということです。
私達のうちに入ってくるもの
私達はなぜ食材を気にするのでしょうか。それは体内に入るものだからです。大気汚染はなぜ私達にとって脅威なのでしょうか。それも体内に入るものだからです。そしてこれらは私達の健康に影響を与えるからです。なぜ美術館に行ったり、セミナーに行くのでしょう。目を通して絵画によって心を養うためです。セミナーで聞く話を通して、何かしらの益を得るためです。箴言４章はこう記しています。
『20わが子よ、わたしの言葉に心をとめ、わたしの語ることに耳を傾けよ。21それを、あなたの目から離さず、あなたの心のうちに守れ。22それは、これを得る者の命であり、またその全身を健やかにするからである』（箴言４章２０節‐２２節）。
日夜、私達の耳には色々な音が入ってきます。例えばフリーウエイをはしる車の音であったり、風の音、アンビュランスの音です。それらの音に加えて、私達の耳には人の口から出る言葉が入ってきます。
同じように私たちの目にも色々なものが入ってきます。誰かが送ってきた手紙、目の前で繰り広げられる誰かの行動、ニュース映像・・・。確かに目を開けている限り、耳が開かれているかぎり、見えるもの、聞こえるものが絶えず私達の内に入ってきます。

このような学習は猿のみならず、私達も常にしていることです。私達は見聞きすることにより学習し、それによって私達は影響を受け、造られていきます。私達の内に入ってくるものにより、私達は色々なことを考え、決断します。これらのものにより、私達、各々が歩む人生の筋道ができあがっていきます。またその入ってきたものが私達の人格をも作り上げていきます。
今から約３８００年も昔、イスラエルの民、すなわち今日のユダヤ人は４００年あまりもの間、エジプトに奴隷となっていました。一口で４００年と言いますが、これは長い年月です。しかし、その中で神様はモーセという人を選び、彼を用いてこのイスラエルの民をエジプトから脱出させます。俗にいう出エジプトの出来事です。そして、神様は彼らの定住地として、カナンという土地を与えると約束されます。モーセに率いられたイスラエルの民はこの約束の地に入ることを希望とし、そこにいたるまで実に４０年もの間、荒野をさまよいます。そして、いよいよカナンの地を目の前にし、神はモーセにこう言います。聖書、民数記にはその出来事が記されています。
1主はモーセに言われた、2「人をつかわして、わたしがイスラエルの人々に与えるカナンの地を探らせなさい。すなわち、その父祖の部族ごとに、すべて彼らのうちのつかさたる者ひとりずつをつかわしなさい」（民数記１３章１節、２節）。
モーセはイスラエルの１２部族の中から一名ずつ、計１２人を選び、カナンの地がどんな土地なのか彼らに偵察に行かせます。彼らは４０日の間、カナンを偵察し、モーセのもとに帰り、こう報告します。
27「わたしたちはあなたが、つかわした地へ行きました。そこはまことに乳と蜜の流れている地です。これはその果物です。28しかし、その地に住む民は強く、その町々は堅固で非常に大きく、わたしたちはそこにアナクの子孫がいるのを見ました。29またネゲブの地には、アマレクびとが住み、山地にはヘテびと、エブスびと、アモリびとが住み、海べとヨルダンの岸べには、カナンびとが住んでいます」（民数記１３章２７節－２９節）
彼らの偵察報告は「その土地はとても豊かな土地であるというグッドニュースと、そこに既に住んでいる民は強く、町も堅固で大きい、そこには諸々の手ごわい民族が住んでいるというバッドニュース」でした。彼らのグッドニュースは短く、バッドニュースは多く、そして具体的です。
私達が日常、見聞きしているものにも、前向きなグッドニュースや否定的なバッドニュースが含まれています。そして、それらは私たちに大きな影響力を持っています。「あなたならできる」という言葉をいつも聞いているのなら、その人は難しいことであっても、不可能に思われるようなことにもチャレンジするようになります。「お前なんか駄目だ」という否定的な言葉をいつも聞いているのなら、その人は物事に対して奥手となり、何もチャレンジすることがなくなるでしょう。私たちはいつもどんなメッセージを聞いているでしょうか。
私達が良きものを見、良き言葉を聞いているのなら、それによって私達は養われ、引き上げられますが、そうではないものを見、そうではないものを聞いているのなら、それは私達の心を時に傷つけ、引き下げるのです。実に私達の内に入ってくるものの影響はとてつもなく大きいということ、私達はこのことを心に留めましょう。
さてカナンの偵察隊ですが、この後、思いがけないことが起きてきます。二つ目のこと、それは「入ってきたものが行き着くところ」ということです。
入ってきたものが行き着くところ
私達の目や耳を通して内にはいってきた情報、メッセージは私達の心に留まります。同じものを見聞きしていた者達は皆、同じ情報を内に取り入れます。そして、その情報やメッセージが一度私達の心に届きますと、色々なかたちにそれらは変化します。
突然、降ってきた夕立に対して、ある人はうらめしく天を見上げ、ある人は感謝と共に天を見上げます。ヤジを聞いてもそれを聞き流す野球選手もいれば、そのヤジに腹を立てて取っ組み合いの喧嘩になることもあります。入ってくるものをどのように受け止めるかということにより、私達のその後の言動は決まります。そして、その言動の司令塔となっているところが私たちの心なのです。このことをソロモンはよくよく理解していたのでしょう。彼は２３節でこう記しています。
『23油断することなく、あなたの心を守れ、命の泉は、これから流れ出るからである』（箴言４章２３節）。
先ほどのカナンへの偵察隊ですが、彼らのモーセに対する報告を聞いて彼らと共に偵察に行っていましたユダの部族、エフンネの子カレブはモーセの前で、民をしずめてこう言います。30「わたしたちはすぐにのぼって、攻め取りましょう。わたしたちは必ず勝つことができます」。
偵察隊の先の報告にはその場所を攻め取ることがどんなに難しいかということが語られていました。そこに既にいる民族の名前が幾人も列挙されていました。しかし、これらに対して、さらに同じ土地を偵察したヌンの子ヨシュアとカレブは言いました「わたしたちが行き巡って探った地は非常に良い地です。8もし、主が良しとされるならば、わたしたちをその地に導いて行って、それをわたしたちにくださるでしょう。それは乳と蜜の流れている地です。9ただ、主にそむいてはなりません。またその地の民を恐れてはなりません。彼らはわたしたちの食い物にすぎません。彼らを守る者は取り除かれます。主がわたしたちと共におられますから、彼らを恐れてはなりません」（民数記１４章７節－９節）。
ヨシュアもカレブも他の１０人の偵察隊と同じ光景をカナンで見てきたのです。そこで見聞きしたものは同じです。そこまでは同じです。しかし、そこから先が異なりました。一方は恐れと諦め、一方は奮い立つ思いと情熱。まさしく全く対照的な思いがそこから生まれたのです。言うまでもなく、このどちらの思いに生きるかということが、この後のイスラエル民族の行く末に大きな影響を与えます。これらのことが決められる場所こそが私達の心なのです。
もう一度、申し上げます。私達はいつも莫大の量の情報を耳や目を通して内に取り入れています。それを取り入れ、心で咀嚼し、自らの言動を決めます。見ていること、聞いていることからどんなメッセージを受け取るのかということ、そこからを不可能なことばかりを見つけ出し諦めるのか、その中から可能性を見出し、取り組むのか、それは全て私達の心でなされることであり、言うまでもなく、その一つ一つの決断が私達という人間を作り上げ、私達の人生を導いているのです。
ところでなぜヨシュアとカレブは他の１０人とは異なった見解をもつことができたのでしょうか。それは一重に彼らの信仰だと言うことができます。彼らは繰り返し「主が良しとされるなら」、「主にそむいてはなりません」、「主が私たちと共におられますから」とその見聞きした事がらの中に主の存在を認めているのです。それに対して１０人の者達の言葉の中には「主」という言葉は出てきません。
皆さん、私たちは信仰者です。ヨシュアとカレブと同じように主を信じる者です。主を信じる者の特権は私たちが見聞きしていることの中に主のはたらきを認めることができるということです。そして、言うまでもありません、この主のはたらきを認めるのなら、私たちの決断は己ずと変わってくるのです。さらに、ソロモンが言っている「あなたのの心を守れ」ということは、すなわち、「その心に主を置くことなのだ」ということを私たちは知るのです。
こう考えますとあのへブル書１１章１節、２節の言葉がよく分かります『1さて、信仰とは、望んでいる事がらを確信し、まだ見ていない事実を確認することである。2昔の人たちは、この信仰のゆえに賞賛された』。あの１１章に記されている人間達は皆、その生涯に神様と共に何かを成し遂げた人達です。彼らと他の人間の間にもし違いがあるとするのなら、彼らはその心に主を起き、主を信じて生きたということです。そのことが彼らをして賞賛される者としたのです。最後のことを見ましょう。それは「私たちから出ていくもの」ということです。
私達から出ていくもの
これまで私達の目と耳から内に入ってくるもの、そしてその入ってきたものが行き着く心についてお話ししました。今度はそれが出ていくということです。最近、よく巷で言われるインプットに対するアウトプットです。
先にヨシュアとカレブが「わたしたちはすぐにのぼって、攻め取りましょう。わたしたちは必ず勝つことができます」（民数記１３章３０節）と言ったと話ました。それに対して彼らと共に偵察に言った者達は言いました。「わたしたちはその民のところへ攻めのぼることはできません。彼らはわたしたちよりも強いからです」。32そして彼らはその探った地のことを、イスラエルの人々に悪く言いふらして言った、「わたしたちが行き巡って探った地は、そこに住む者を滅ぼす地です。またその所でわたしたちが見た民はみな背の高い人々です。33わたしたちはまたそこで、ネピリムから出たアナクの子孫ネピリムを見ました。わたしたちには自分が、いなごのように思われ、また彼らにも、そう見えたに違いありません」（民数記１３章３１節－３３節）。
彼らの出した結論は明確でした。すなわち、それは「そこに攻め上ることはできない」ということです。なぜなら「彼らはわたしたちよりも強いからだ」と彼らは言いました。そして、イスラエルの民に「そこにいる民は皆、背の高い人で、その人達の前には自分達はいなごのように無力に思えましたし、彼らもそう私達を見たに違いない」と言いました。
皆さん、私たちは今、物事が人の心に入っていく時に、それがどのように外に出て、発展していくかということを目の当たりにしています。カナンを責め取ることができないという理由がどんどんヨシュアとカレブ以外の偵察隊の心から溢れてきます。その理由の一つはカナンに住んでいる人は皆、背が高いということ。彼らの前に立つ私たちは小さないなごのように無力であるということです。いくら彼らが背が高いといっても、まさか彼らは５メートルもあるような巨人ではないのです。しかし、彼らが心で受け止めた思いは、彼らはまさしく巨人で自分達はその前にいるいなごに思えたというのです。
皆さん、私たちの心で湧いてくる思いは、ここまでいたるのです。それは豊かな（この場合、豊かと言っていいのか分かりませんが）想像力に満ちており、ご丁寧に自分はいなごだとまで彼らの心は言っているのです。さらにさらに彼らの心の思いは「彼らもそう私たちを見たに違いありません」というところにまで行き着くのです。カナンの土地の人がこの偵察隊をどう見たかなどということは、本人に聞かなければ分かりません。しかし、私たちの心の思いはこのようなところにまで広がっていくのです。
そして、厄介なのは、このような思いがその心で生産され、それが外に出ますとこういうことが起きてきます。すなわち、これらのことを聞いた1会衆はみな声をあげて叫び、民はその夜、泣き明かした。2またイスラエルの人々はみなモーセとアロンにむかってつぶやき、全会衆は彼らに言った、「ああ、わたしたちはエジプトの国で死んでいたらよかったのに。この荒野で死んでいたらよかったのに。3なにゆえ、主はわたしたちをこの地に連れてきて、つるぎに倒れさせ、またわたしたちの妻子をえじきとされるのであろうか。エジプトに帰る方が、むしろ良いではないか」（民数記１４章１節－３節）。
受けた情報を心に受け止める時に、主が不在である時にどんな言葉がその心から出て来るのかを私たちは見てまいりました。そして、その言葉が新たなるメッセージとなってイスラエルの民の耳に入り、それが彼らの心に入り、残念なことにその言葉は彼らの心を揺さぶったのです。「倍返しだ！」という言葉が昨年は流行りましたが、人のつぶやきを聞いた者は、それを倍にして次の人に告げます。民はその夜、泣き明かし、そしてモーセとアロンにつぶやき、自分達はエジプトで死んでいたらよかった、荒野で死んでいたらよかったとまで言わしめたのです。そして、ここにきてやっと彼らの口から「主」という言葉が出てきますが、その主はもはや主がいるから大丈夫というものではなくて、自分達が今、直面していることは「主のせいなのだ」ということを叫ぶ言葉となったのです。
ソロモンは言いました『24曲った言葉をあなたから捨てさり、よこしまな談話をあなたから遠ざけよ。25あなたの目は、まっすぐに正面を見、あなたのまぶたはあなたの前を、まっすぐに見よ。26あなたの足の道に気をつけよ、そうすれば、あなたのすべての道は安全である。27右にも左にも迷い出てはならない、あなたの足を悪から離れさせよ』（箴言４章２４節‐２７節）。
この「よこしまな談話」という言葉を英語の聖書は「Corrupt Talk」、すなわち「破壊してしまう、壊してしまう会話」と書いています。「壊す」ということは、その前に既にそこに形あるものがあるということで、それらをその会話は壊してしまうというのです。ソロモンはそのような会話を遠ざけよと言うのです。１０年の歳月をかけて書き上げた絵画は５秒でずたずたにすることができます。そして、言うまでもない、それをもう一度書き直すためには１０年かかります。否、もしかしたら、もう書き直すことができないかもしれません。まさしく１０人の偵察隊の心から湧き出た言葉はイスラエルの民の心にいたり、それらは彼らの信仰をずたずたに壊し、彼らを混乱に陥れてしまったのです。
皆さん、今日は私たちの外から私たちの内に入ってくるものについて、そして、それらが私たちの心に留まる時に、それがどのように心の中で受け止められるかということ、そしてその受け止めたものが、やがては私たちを通して外に出ていくということを見てまいりました。カナンに偵察しに行った者達の言動から、同じものを見ていながら、それをどう受け止め、どう発していくかということに、ここまで違いが出るのかということを見てまいりました。
これからも私たちは色々なことを見聞きしていきます。時にその見聞きする者は自分で選ぶことができます。このことにより私たちは己が心を守ることができます。しかしながら、入ってくるものは入ってきます。その時に私たちはそれをどう受け止めるのか。私たちの切なる願いと祈りは、その時に私たちの心に主がおられるということ。その見聞きしている物事の中にも主がはたらいていてくださるということを信じて、おのが進むべき道、取るべき手段を決断するということです。そして、必要とあれば、それを私達は外に発していくのです。
私たちの心は主が私達に委ねられているものであり、その采配も私たちに任せられています。ここが私たちの司令塔であり、ここから発せられる指令により、私たちは毎日、生きています。ゆえにソロモンは言うのです。『23油断することなく、あなたの心を守れ、命の泉は、これから流れ出るからである』（箴言４章２３節）と。
礼拝に来るということは、諸集会に出席するということは、聖書を読み、祈るということは、この司令塔をいつも点検するようなものです。そこに神様の光が照らされるということです。その司令塔に主がおられるのかということを確認するということです。このことを確認して、私達は新しい一週間を歩みだすのです。日々、私たちの心を主が支え、主が見守ってくださるように。お祈りしましょう。
Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:20-27

We have been learning from on the Book of Proverbs. In this book we find the wisdom God gave to Solomon, the third king of Israel. The wisdom we find in it is very practical and gives us guidance on how to lead our daily life. Today we will look at the fourth chapter of this Book of Proverbs.
20 My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words.
21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.
23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
24 Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
(Proverbs 4:20-27)
When we read these words carefully we notice that along with his advice, Solomon has listed the different parts of the human body. First he mentions the ear, and then mentions “your sight”, therefore the eyes. These are the organs of our hearing and vision. Next he mentions an organ that cannot be touched or seen, the heart. Lastly he mentions the mouth and the feet, which are parts of the body that express and move according to what is in our mind. With these things in mind I’d like to talk about three important points found in this passage. First I will talk about the things that enter us.
The things that enter us
Why do we take so much care in choosing what we eat? It is because the food will be entering our body. Why are we so threatened by pollution? This too is for the same reason, because it enters our body. And it is because these things have a great effect on our health. Why do we go to museums and to seminars? We go see paintings to cultivate our imagination through our eyes and attend seminars to hear something that will benefit us. It says in Proverbs 4:
20 My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words.
21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. (Proverbs 4:20-22)
Day and night all kinds of sounds are coming into our ears, such as the sound of a car running through the freeway, the sound of the wind blowing, or the sound of an ambulance. And along with these sounds, we have people’s words coming out of their mouths and into our ears.
In the same way, we see many things through our eyes, for example a letter you received from someone, a person doing something in front of you, or images we see on the news. As long our eyes are open and our ears could hear, there will always be something coming into us through our eyes and ears.
Not too many people like snakes. Many of us are afraid of snakes. Why do we fear snakes? Could our fear of snakes be part of our instinct, something we are born with? Or did we learn to fear snakes through the course of our life? Apparently I wasn’t the only one in the world who asked these kinds of questions and someone actually wrote a book titled “Why Do People Hate Snakes?” (“Naze, Hito Wa Hebi Ga Kiraika”, by Nobuo Masataka). In this book the author describes an experiment conducted on monkeys. According to the book, they found out that a monkey that is born and kept in the lab and has never seen a snake does not show any fear when seeing a snake for the first time, but a monkey that is born outside of the lab and sees another monkey fearing a snake, even if it is for a second, from that moment on this monkey will always show fear when seeing a snake. This means that a monkey learns to fear snakes when it sees another one of its fellow monkeys fearing a snake.
This kind of learning is not only seen in monkeys but with us humans as well. From the things we hear and see we learn, become influenced, and our character is shaped. These things that enter us influence our thoughts and decisions. They direct the path we take in life. They even have the power to form our identity.
Around 3800 years ago, the people of Israel were slaves in Egypt for over 400 years. It is easily said but 400 years is a very long time. But during this time God chose a person named Moses to lead the people out Egypt. This is the event known as the Exodus. And God promised them a land called Canaan where they could settle. Entering this Promised Land was the hope of the people of Israel led by Moses and they wandered through the wilderness for forty years before reaching that land. And as they reached the point where land of Canaan was right before them, God spoke to Moses. This is written in the book of Numbers:
1The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders.” (Numbers 13:1-2)
Moses picked one person each from the twelve tribes of Israel and sent them to see what the land of Canaan was like. They explored Canaan for forty days and came back to Moses to give an account of what they saw.
27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.” (Numbers 13:27-29)
In their account they report the good news that the land was flowing with milk and honey and the bad news that the people there are powerful, their cities are fortified and very large, and mentions the fierce tribes that inhabited the land. Their report of the good news was very brief but the bad news was long and very detailed.
The things we hear and see every day are also a mix of good news and bad news, of positive and negative things. And these things have a great influence on us. If a person is always encouraged by the words “I know you could do it”, he or she will be able to challenge even difficult or seemingly impossible tasks. On the other hand, if they are constantly told something discouraging like “you have no chance”, they will most likely never even want try anything and become reserved. What kind of message are we hearing every day?
If we see good things and hear positive words, these things will nourish us and lift us up, but if the things we see and the words we hear are negative, they will sometimes hurt us and bring us down. Let us remember that these things that enter us have a profound effect on our lives.
Now for these men who explored the land of Canaan, something unexpected began to unfold. Let us move on to the second point of today’s message, where the things that enter us lead to.
Where the things that enter us lead to
The information and messages that enter us through our eyes and ears are stored in our hearts. Those who see and hear the same receive the same information. And once the information reaches our hearts, its shape may change in many different ways.
When there is sudden rainfall some people gaze at the sky begrudgingly while others look up with thankfulness. Some baseball players are able to dismiss taunts while others get angry and start a fist fight. The way we receive the things that are entering us determines our actions and words that follow. And our heart is the control tower that directs all our actions and words. Solomon must have understood this very well and wrote this in verse 23:
23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:23)
In the account of the exploration of Canaan, it says that after hearing his fellow explorers’ report to Moses, Caleb from the tribe of Judah silenced the crowd and said this before Moses: “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” (Numbers 13:30).
The account given by the explorers before this focused on how difficult it would be for them to take possession of the land. They gave a list of all the tribes that already inhabited the land. But on the other hand Joshua and Caleb, who explored the same land as the other leaders, said this: 7 …“The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. 8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.” (Numbers 14:7-9).
In Canaan, Joshua and Caleb saw the same land as the other ten explorers. They saw and heard the same exact things. Up to this point they were all the same. But what happened after made the difference. One side had fear and resignation, while the other had courage and was filled with passion. The different attitudes that arose from them were exact opposites. Needless to say, the attitude they chose to live by had a great effect on the history of the people of Israel that followed. And the place where these decisions are made is our heart.
Let me say this again: everyday, we are taking in an enormous amount of information through our eyes and ears. We take it in, digest it, and base our words and actions upon it. In our hearts we determine what kind of message we receive from the things we see and hear, whether we focus only on the impossibilities and give up or find possibilities and venture on: all of this is done in our hearts and needless to say, each of these decisions makes us who we are as a person and guides the direction of our lives.
So why were Joshua and Caleb able to have a different perspective than the other ten? There is only one answer and that is their faith. They repeatedly acknowledged the Lord in everything they saw and heard by saying “if the Lord is pleased with us”, “do not rebel against the Lord”, and “the Lord is with us”. In contrast the other ten never mentioned “the LORD”.
Brothers and sisters, we are believers. We believe in the LORD just as Joshua and Caleb did. The privilege we have as believers is that we can acknowledge God’s work in the things we see and hear. And needless to say, if we acknowledge the work of God, our decisions will change as a matter of course. Not only that, but if we do this, we realize that when Solomon says “guard your heart” he is telling you to “place the Lord in your heart”.
When we see this we can understand what is said in Hebrew 11:1-2: “1Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for”. All of the names listed in chapter 11 of this book are of people whose accomplishments in life were made together with God. If there is anything that made them different from other people, it is the fact that they placed God in their hearts and lived by their faith in the Lord. By this they were all commended. Now let us move on to the last point, which is “what goes out of us”.
What goes out of us
Up to this point I talked about what comes in through our eyes and ears, and that these things reach our heart. Now let us see what happens when these things get outside of us. This is what is commonly known as the relation between the input and the output.
As I mentioned earlier, Joshua and Caleb said “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it” (Numbers 13:30). And to this the other men replied: “31…“We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them”” (Numbers 13:31-33).
It was clear that the other men have reached this conclusion, that they cannot take possession of the land. They said it was because “they are stronger” than them. And they said to the people of Israel, “the people there are of great size and we were powerless like grasshoppers in our own eyes and they must have thought the same”.
Right now we are seeing how a thing gets inside a person’s heart and what it could turn into when it gets out of this person. The reasons why they could not possess the land of Canaan were pouring out from the hearts of these men, except from Joshua and Caleb. One of the reasons was that the people there were of great size. They said that they were like helpless grasshoppers before these people. Though they say these inhabitants were of great size they couldn’t have been fifteen-foot giants. But what the explorers felt in their hearts was that these people were giants and that before them they were like grasshoppers.
Dear brothers and sisters, this is the extent to which we are affected by the things that spring from our hearts. To say they had a rich imagination is a bit ironic, but they even went so far as to call themselves grasshoppers. Their hearts even led them to think that “they (the inhabitants of Canaan) must have thought the same”. The explorers couldn’t have known what the people of Canaan thought of them without asking them in person. But this is how much influence the thoughts in our heart can have on us.
And what is even more troubling is when these kinds of thoughts spring forth from the heart and gets outside of us. So when they heard what the explorers said, “1That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. 2 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt”” (Numbers 14:1-3).
We just saw the kind of words that come out of us when we take in information without having the Lord in our hearts. And these words took on a new meaning as they entered the ears and then the hearts of the people of Israel, and sadly these words brought doubt into their hearts. When a person hears someone grumble, they will add their own grumblings to it and tell it to the next person. The people wept aloud that night and grumbled against Moses and Aaron, going so far as to saying they wish they had died in
Egypt or in the wilderness. And here they finally mention the name of the LORD, yet it was not because they trusted that the LORD will deliver them, but instead they said that the LORD is to blame for the difficulties they were facing.
Solomon said, “24 Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. 26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. 27 Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil” (Proverbs 4:24-27).
In this passage we see the phrase “corrupt talk” which means “words that destroy”. When something is destroyed it means it loses the form it had before its destruction and here it says that is what corrupt talk does. Solomon tells us to keep these w0rds far from our lips. A painting that took ten years to complete can be destroyed in five seconds. And needless to say, it would take another ten years to paint it again. Or even worse, this painting may never be completed again. In the same way the words that came out of the hearts of the ten explorers reached the hearts of the people of Israel and tore apart their faith and threw them into confusion.
Today we learned about the things that enter us from without, how these things are received when they reach our hearts, and how these things are put out through us. And through the account of the men who explored Canaan we learned that although they saw the same things, the way in which they took in and put out what they saw made a huge difference.
We will continue to see and hear many things. At times we can choose what we see and hear. By doing this we can guard our hearts. But whatever gets inside us will get inside us. If so how will we take it in? Our hope is that the Lord is in our hearts when this happens. This means to put our faith in the Lord by acknowledging Him in everything we see and hear and to make our decisions and decide the path we take by this faith. And when it is necessary we can put the things we have received out into the world.
Our heart and the decision we make in our heart have been entrusted to us by God. Our heart is our control tower and we live by the directions that it gives us. This is why Solomon said these words: “23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23).
Coming to worship, attending various meetings, reading the Bible, and praying are all ways of inspecting and maintaining this control tower. In this way we have God shine His light on us. And we affirm that the Lord is in this control tower. With this affirmation we can begin each new week. May the Lord guide and protect our heart each day. Let us pray.
