我らの主を信じる ２０１１年５月１日

このビスマルクが日本にいた時にいったいいくつのサインを書いたかは分かりませんが、その数だけ、彼は「イエスは主」と書いたのです。それは彼が自分の名前と共に最も人に伝えたかったメッセージであったに違いありません。はたして彼がそれほどまでにして伝えたかった「イエスは主」という言葉はどんな意味をもっているのでしょうか。
私達は「使徒信条」をシリーズとして見ていますが、この中にも「我は我らの救い主、主イエス・キリストを信ず」と書かれています。さぁ、今日はこの「イエスは主」ということを見ていきましょう。まず最初に「主」とはどんな意味があるのかということを見ていきたいと思います。
「主」とは？
ヨハネ２０章２７節‐２９節にはこのような出来事が記録されています：27それからトマスに言われた「あなたの指をここにつけて、わたしの手を見なさい。手をのばしてわたしのわきにさし入れてみなさい。信じない者にならないで、信じる者になりなさい」。28トマスはイエスに答えて言った、「わが主よ、わが神よ」。29イエスは彼に言われた、「あなたはわたしを見たので信じたのか。見ないで信ずる者は、さいわいである」。
このヨハネ２０章は「イエスが復活したことなどは俺は信じない。俺はその手に釘あとを見、俺の指をその釘あとに差し入れ、俺の手をそのわきに差し入れてみなければ、決して信じない」（ヨハネ２０章２５節、参照）と豪語していたイエスの弟子であったトマスに対して、そのトマスの目の前に姿をあらわしたイエス・キリストご自身が言われた言葉です。その時に、トマスの口から思わずイエスに向かって出た言葉が「わが主よ、わが神よ」という言葉だったのです。すなわち、ここでトマスはイエスに向かって「わが主よ」と言っているのであり、それはビスマルクが言ったように「イエスは主」ということなのです。
ここで言われている「主」という言葉は英語では「ＬＯＲＤ」と言います。この
「ＬＯＲＤ」はどこから来ているかといいますと、旧約聖書において神を意味するヘブル語のＹＨＷＨ(יהוה)（出エジプト３章１４節）から来ています。これは「あってある者」という意味で、神が全てのことの源であり、天地万物の創造者であること、この世界を統べ治めているお方であるということです。
なぜ、今私は「ワイ・エイッチ・ダブリュウ・エイッチ」と言ったかといいますと、このイエス・キリストが生まれる１４００年ほど前、モーセに与えられた十戒の中に「神の名をみだりに唱えてはならない」（出エジプト記２０章７節）という戒めを文字通り受け止めた人々は、子音だけで発音不可能な言葉をもって、神に対する神聖な呼び名としたからなのです。ですから、この言葉は実際には発音できないのです。しかし、発音ができないというのも不便ですので、聖書のある部分においてはそれを「アドナイ」と読み替えたのです。
そして、このヘブル語で書かれた旧約聖書がギリシア語に訳される時に「ＹＨＷＨ」とあるところは「キュリオス」と訳され、それは日本語では「主」とされました。英語の聖書ではこの「ＹＨＷＨ」はすべて大文字で「ＬＯＲＤ」とされています。ちなみに新改訳聖書でこの「ＹＨＷＨ」は太字で「主」と書かれています。
以前、私の恩師が米国の神学校に留学していた時にユダヤ人の教授とヘブル語を一対一で勉強した時のことを話してくれました。その恩師のユダヤ人教授はその時、ヘブル語聖書を朗読していたというのですが、この教授がこの主、すなわち「ＹＨＷＨ」が記されているところに来ますと、その度ごとに目を閉じ、しばし沈黙をもつというのです。そして、沈黙の後にまた続く言葉を読み始めるというのです。それは神はあまりにも偉大で、聖なるお方であり、その名を呼ぶに相応しくない自分の心というものをあらわすものだったのでしょう。そのような神が人の姿をとり、私達人の間に生きてくださったというのが主イエス・キリストなのです。
ですから、このトマスが言いました「わが主」というのは明らかに続いて語られます「わが神」と同じ意味をもつ言葉なのです。すなわちその名を呼ぶのにもはばかれるほどに聖なる、絶対的な存在を意味する言葉なのです。こう考えます時にトマスがイエスに向かい「わが主よ、わが神よ」と言われた意味がお分かりになると思います。わき腹を刺され、両手に傷跡をもち、死んで確かに墓に葬られたお方が彼の前に立って「自分の手に触れて見なさい、わきに手を入れてみなさい」と言うのですから、トマスの口からは「わが主よ、わが神よ｣という言葉がでてきたのです。
このことゆえに、二週間前にもお話しましたようにJ.G.メイチェンという神学者が｢キリスト教信仰とは『イエス・キリストが神を信じたように、我々も神を信じる』という宗教ではなく『イエス･キリストが神である』と信じる宗教なのである」と言っているのであり、このことゆえに私達も今朝「我は我らの主イエス・キリストを信ず」という信仰を告白をしたののです。二つ目のことを見ましょう。それは「イエスは主という告白」です。
「イエスは主」という告白
ローマ１０章９節‐１３節を読みましょう。9すなわち、自分の口で、イエスは主であると告白し、自分の心で、神が死人の中からイエスをよみがえらせたと信じるなら、あなたは救われる。10なぜなら、人は心に信じて義とされ、口で告白して救われるからである。11聖書は、「すべて彼を信じる者は、失望に終ることがない」と言っている。12ユダヤ人とギリシヤ人との差別はない。同一の主が万民の主であって、彼を呼び求めるすべての人を豊かに恵んで下さるからである。13なぜなら、「主の御名を呼び求める者は、すべて救われる」とあるからである。
このローマ書を読みます時に、この「イエスは主」という言葉には力があることが分かります。そうです、もし私達が各々その口で「イエスは主」であるということを告白するのなら、すなわちイエスは神であり、このイエスは死人の中からよみがえったと信じるなら、あなたは救われるというのです。
何度もお話していますように私達には理性によって理解できることがあります。しかし、イエスが復活したということは自分の知性と経験により合点がいって理解することではありません。それは「心に信じて、口で告白する」ことなのです。
これはとても大切なことです。人はここにいたるまで自分の力だけで救いを得ようと努めてきたのです。でも、何せ信仰の対象が神様であり、そのお方は私達人間の常識をはるかに超えた方でありますゆにえ、最後は信仰によってしか近づけないお方なのです。
ですから、そんな人間の限界というものを理解し、労わるかのように神なるキリストは優しくこのトマスに語っているのです。先ほどのヨハネ２０章です「あなたの指をここにつけて、わたしの手を見なさい。信じない者にならないで、信じる者になりなさい」トマスはイエスに答えて言った、「わが主よ、わが神よ」。イエスは彼に言われた、「あなたはわたしを見たので信じたのか。見ないで信ずる者は幸いである」（ヨハネ２０章２６節‐２９節）。
この二月にイスラエルに行かせていただきました時にエルサレムの町を歩きました。エルサレムは城壁に囲まれており、その中でダマスカス門という門から城壁の外に出たアラブ人地区にイエス様が葬られたであろうという洞窟があります。実際にそこがイエスの墓だといわれている理由として、その側には「されこうべ」、すなわち人の頭蓋骨に似た岩があるのです。そこには世界中からひっきりなしに観光客がやってきます。この旅が幸いだったのは私は一人旅でしたので、いつまでもいたい所にいれるということ、タイミングがよければ誰もいない場所にしばらく一人でいれるということで、この時も私は一人でこの洞窟の中にいたのです。壁を見れば有名な「He is not here, for he is risen彼はここにはおられない。よみがえられたのだ」という言葉が掲げられています。
私が一人でその墓の中にいた時に、イエスが姿をあらわして、あのマリアのように「兄弟よ」と後ろで語りかけてくれたら何と素晴らしいだろうと思います。しかし、主は姿を見せない。いくら待ってもその姿はそこにはありません。そんなことを一人、墓の中で考えていた時、このトマスの出来事が浮かんできたのです。トマスはこのエルサレムのどこかで復活のイエスと合間見えたに違いない。そこでイエスの姿を身、声を聞いたに違いない。そして、彼は答えたのです「我が主よ」と。
私の前にその時はイエス様はいませんでした。しかし、その時、私もその墓の前で思わず口からトマスと同じ言葉が出たのです。「わが主よ、わが神よ」。それは私の疑いのない心からの言葉であり、その場所でよみがえられたイエスこそ私の主、私の神ですという信仰の告白だったのです。
そして、そう告白することによって、その告白が意味するところ、すなわちその口でイエスは主であると告白する者は救われるというその約束に喜びが満たされたのです。皆さん、神様が私達に提示している救いとはこのようにとてもシンプルなことです。そして、それは全ての人に等しく与えられているものなのです。次に「あなたの主は誰ですか」ということをお話しします。
あなたの主は誰ですか？
私達にとってイエスが主であるということは、イエスが私達の主（あるじ）であり、私達は僕であるということです。この主のおる場所に他の何者をも置かないことです。私達にとって自分自身、親兄弟、夫、妻、子供、また私達の財産や地位、名誉というものはとても大切なものです。しかし、私達が「イエスは主」と言う限りは、それらを本来、主イエスがいる場所に置かないということです。
その主が座る場所に自分が座って、あたかもイエス様に向かって「あれをしてください。これをしてください。今すぐ、してください」というようなことを私達は言っていないでしょうか。これでは、どちらが主であり、僕なのか分かりません。そうではなくて、僕は主の御声を聞き、常にその御心が成るようにと祈るのです。
この度の震災を通して、私達はリーダーシップということについて多くの関心を寄せています。どれだけその先頭に立って国をリーダーする人の存在が大きいかということです。そのことが国が立つか、倒れるかというようなことにまで影響を与えるのだということを私達は実感しています。
同じように私達の人生の主を誰にするのかということは、本来、私達が一番最初に考えるべきことなのです。多くの人は自分の人生の舵取りは自分ですべきことと考えます。あるいは夫や子供、いやこの資産があるからと思います。しかし、聖書は言うのです。ノー、あなたの主（あるじ）は主イエスだけであるべきだと。
だからといって「今日は教会に言ってきて、こんな話を聞いてきたのよ。私の主人はあなたじゃないのよ」とご主人に言ってはいけません。そうではなくて、本来、聖書は夫婦とはどちらかが上に立つように造られたのではなくて、夫と妻は互いに並んで、互いに同じ方向を、すなわち神様を見上げて手を取り合って生きていくようにと造られているのであり、それこそが最も幸いな夫婦生活の秘訣なのだということを言っているのです。
もし、皆さんの中で何とも私達夫婦はうまくいかない、家族がまとまらない、というような方がいましたら、いや、もっと言いますと、生まれてからこの方、自分がその主の座についていたけれど、ほとほと、そこは自分が座ってどうにかなる場所ではないということが分かりましたという方がいましたら、自分にとって、夫婦にとって、家族にとって本当の「主」とは誰なのかといことをもう一度、考えてみませんか。
スポーツの世界ではそのチームが結果が出ないと監督が更迭されることがあります。諸々の古き主が私達の王座にいて、それゆえに色々なことが行き詰っている、混乱してしまっていると感じている方がいますのなら、これからの人生、新しい主、すなわち主イエス・キリストにその王座に座っていただきませんか。最後に「イエスは主」として生きるとはどういうことなのかということをお話しましょう。
「イエスは主」として生きるとは？
「イエスは主」として生きるとはどういうことなのか？このことについて聖書は明確にイエスキリストが語られた譬話としてルカによる福音書６章４６節にこう記しています「わたしを主よ、主よ、と呼びながら、なぜわたしの言うことを行わないのか。わたしのもとに来て、わたしの言葉を聞いて行う者が、何に似ているか、あなたがたに教えよう。それは地を深く掘り、岩の上に土台をすえて家を建てる人に似ている。洪水が出て、激流がその家に押し寄せてきても、それを揺り動かすことはできない。よく建ててあるからである。しかし聞いても行わない人は、土台なしで、土の上に家を建てた人に似ている。激流がその家に押し寄せてきたら、たちまち倒れてしまい、その被害は大きいのである」（ルカ６章４６節‐４９節）。
この譬話に難しいことは書かれていません。洪水がやってくるまで、人々は普通の生活をしていたのです。岩の上に土台をしっかり建てた人も、土台というものがないような家を建てた人も同じように暮らしていました。もしかしたら土台なしで家を建てた人達は、その土台を造るための予算や時間というものを自分の楽しみのために使っていたのかもしれません。あるいは、それらをが華やか外装に用いていたかもしれません。「あいつら、来もしない洪水のためにあんなにしっかりと土台を造って、何の意味があるのだ」と思っている者もいたかもしれません。
しかし、その時がきました。洪水がこの家々を襲いました。土台を据えていた家はそこに残り、土台を据えなかった家は倒れてしまい、その被害は大きなものとなりました。これはこの度の東関東大震災のような洪水が実際に、海から押し寄せてくるというようなことを言っているのではなく、私達の人生に押し寄せてくる諸々の大波を意味します。その時に「主よ、主よ」と言っているものの土台が保たれるのではなく、その主の言う言葉を聞いて、実際に従う者が保たれるのだというのです。マタイ７章２１節においてもイエス・キリストが言っている通りです「わたしに向かって主よ、主よ、と言う者が皆、天の御国にはいるのではなく、天におられるわたしの父の御心を行うものがはいるのです」と言われたとおりです。
私達は「我らの主に向かって賛美を捧げましょう」と言って、日曜日ごとに歌うかもしれません。主イエス・キリストの御名によって祈りますと毎日、祈っているかもしれません。しかし、肝心なことは「主よ、主よ」と繰り返し歌うことでも、祈ることでもないのです。実際にあなたは主なるイエスの言葉に聞き従おうとしているかということなのです。ヤコブ１章２１節から２５節までヤコブも同じことを言っています。
1:21だから、すべての汚れや、はなはだしい悪を捨て去って、心に植えつけられている御言を、すなおに受け入れなさい。御言には、あなたがたのたましいを救う力がある。22そして、御言を行う人になりなさい。おのれを欺いて、ただ聞くだけの者となってはいけない。23おおよそ御言を聞くだけで行わない人は、ちょうど、自分の生れつきの顔を鏡に映して見る人のようである。24彼は自分を映して見てそこから立ち去ると、そのとたんに、自分の姿がどんなであったかを忘れてしまう。25これに反して、完全な自由の律法を一心に見つめてたゆまない人は、聞いて忘れてしまう人ではなくて、実際に行う人である。こういう人は、その行いによって祝福される。
私達の人生は皆、違います。その違いの原因というのはそんなに複雑なものではありません。それはとてもシンプルなものであるということが最近、私自身とてもよく分かってきました。何がその違いを生み出すのか。たった一言、「そのことをするか、しないか」「Do it or not」。「すべきことは分かっていると言いつつ、何もしない人」と「する人」という違いが、私達の人生にとてつもない違いを生み出しているのです。ヤコブは２５節最後に書いています「完全な自由の律法を一心に見つめてたゆまない人は、聞いて忘れてしまう人ではなくて、実際に行う人である。こういう人は、その行いによって祝福される」。
私達はイエスは主と告白し、告白のみならず、この主の言葉に聴き従う人生を歩もうではありませんか。お祈りしましょ
Believe in our Lord

Once there was a soccer player named Bismarck who was known to be a very quiet person. He was the youngest player of the Brazilian team to play in the 1990 World Cup held in Italy and in year 1993, he became a player in the Japanese professional soccer team. He was once chosen as a MVP of the year, Japanese soccer fans became really attracted to him not just because of his amazing playing techniques, but from this one unique pose he made when he made a goal or won the game.
Before he went to hug his teammates, Bismarck always thanked God first for the victory or the goal. At the time, there were many young boys playing soccer at the park did the same pose as Bismarck when they made a goal without knowing the meaning of it. When I was in Japan, I had several chances to see him and I was also invited to his house. Whenever he had written autographs, he wrote one phrase.
He probably asked his manager to teach him how to write this phrase in Japanese and practiced hard to learn it. He wrote “Iesu wa Shu”, which means “Jesus is Lord”. I went to Brazil 5 years ago and asked one pastor how Bismarck was doing. He told me that Bismarck has retired and he ran a business in Rio de Janeiro. I strongly believe that he is still living with passionate faith glowing inside his heart quietly.
I don’t know how many autographs Bismarck has signed when he was in Japan, but same number of times he signed the autograph, same number of times he wrote “Jesus is Lord”. That was the most important message he wanted to tell to his Japanese fans. Though, what does this phrase, “Jesus is Lord”, really means?
There’s a phrase “I believe in our Lord” written in the Apostles’ Creed that we have been learning. Today we will be focusing on this phrase “Jesus is Lord”. First of all, I would like to talk about the meaning of “Lord”.
Who is LORD?
In John 20:27~29, it says,
27 Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here: see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. 28 Thomas said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”. 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
This is the words of Jesus Christ Himself who appeared to Thomas. He was one of the disciples. He once said confidently “Unless I see the nails marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it”.
But when Jesus told him as verse 27~29, Thomas instinctively said “My Lord and my God!” He said to Jesus “My Lord”. This is the same as the phrase “Jesus is Lord” that Bismarck wrote in his autographs.
“SHU” in Japanese means “LORD” in English. This LORD came from YHWH in Hebrew meaning GOD in the Old Testament. (Exodus 3:14) YHWH means “to be” or “I am that I am”. God is the source of everything and He is the Creator of all things in the universe and governs this world.
I said YHWH because about 1400years before Jesus birth, Moses was given the Ten Commandments and it said, “You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.”(Exodus 20:7)
People accepted this commandment as it was written and they used only consonant words to make the holy name of God.
This word YHWH could be inconvenient sometimes since it is impossible to pronounce, so in some passages in the Bible, YHWH is replaced with the word “Adonai”.
And when the Old Testament written in Hebrew was translated into Greek, YHWH became CURIOS and then it became SHU in Japanese. In the English Bible, this YHWH is replaced with the word LORD in capital letters. Some Japanese translations use the word SHU in bold letters.
Back in the days, my teacher told me about his experience of learning Hebrew with a Jewish professor when he was studying in an American seminary.
He told me that the Jewish professor was reading a Hebrew Bible and whenever he came across to a verse with the word YHWH in it, he closed his eyes and became silent. And after a moment of silence, he started reading the following verses again. I think that was a reflection of how he felt, that he was not worthy to call “His” name which is so great and holy. This great God that became human and lived among us is our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thus when Thomas said, “my LORD”, it meant the same as “my GOD”. The word referred to an existence so holy and absolute that people feared to even say His name.
When we think about this, we can understand why Thomas said to Jesus, “My LORD, my GOD”.
Because Jesus, who died, buried in grave with scar in his hands, after being pierced at his side, appeared and stood before Thomas to tell him “Reach out your hand and put it into my side”, Thomas replied “My LORD, my GOD”.
As I mentioned two weeks ago, Theologian J.G. Maychan said that Christian faith is not a religion in which “we believe God in the same way Jesus Christ believed in God”. But rather, the Christianity is the religion in which “we believe Jesus Christ as God.” Because of this, we confess our faith this morning by saying “I believe in our Lord Jesus.
Let me talk about the second thing: The confession of “Jesus is LORD.”
Let us read the Romans 10:9~13
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
When we read these verses, we realize the phrase “Jesus is Lord” has a power. Yes, if we confess “Jesus is LORD” by our mouth, Jesus is GOD and if you believe that Jesus was resurrected among the dead, you will be saved.
As I have been saying repeatedly, we can understand certain things with reason. But the resurrection of Jesus cannot be understood relying on our experience and intelligence; it needs to be believed in our heart and we have to confess from our own mouths.
This is very important. Until then, people were trying to receive salvation by their own effort. Though the object of faith is God and because He is far beyond our common sense, we cannot reach Him without faith.
Jesus understood such a human limitation and treated it kindly and talked to Thomas. “Put your finger here: see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. 28 Thomas said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”. 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen.me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”(John 20:27~29)
This February, I went to Israel and walked around the town of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is surrounded by rampart. There is a gate named Damascus and outside of the gate is an Arab district. There is a cave where Jesus might be buried. The reason why that is called Jesus’ grave is there is a rock looked like human skull next to it. Many people visit there from all over the world.
I was fortunate to stay wherever I want to stay as long as I wished because I was traveling alone. If timing allowed, I could have stayed there alone. I was in the cave alone at the time. On the wall, the plaque said “He is not here, for he is risen.”
It would be wonderful if Jesus called me “Brother” from the back as Mary experienced, when I was in the cave alone. But Lord did not appear. Even if I waited and waited, Jesus never showed up. When I was thinking such thing, what happened to Thomas came in my mind. Thomas must have seen Jesus in somewhere in Jerusalem and saw his resurrected body and heard his voice. And he answered “My LORD”.
When I was in the cave, Jesus was not there. But at the time, before the grave, the same word came from my mouth. “My LORD my GOD.”
That was my sincerer word from my heart without any doubt and the confession of my faith of Jesus who was resurrected there is my LORD and my GOD.
And by confessing this way, by confessing with his mouth “Jesus is Lord”, the believer will be saved, and will be filled with joy of that promise.
Brothers and sisters, the salvation God has granted us is this simple. And this salvation is given equally to every one of us.
Thirdly, I would like to talk about who your Lord is.
Who is your Lord?
When we say “Jesus is our Lord”, it means that Jesus is our master and we are his servants. We don’t put anybody else in the place of this master.
There are a number of important things in our life, such as our own well being, parents, siblings, husbands, wives, children, our wealth, status, and honor. Though as long as we say Jesus is our LORD, we do not put these things in the place where Jesus is.
Aren’t we saying to Jesus, “Please do this and that, please do this right now!” by sitting where Jesus should be?
If we do so, we can’t see who the master is and who the servant is. Instead, the servants must listen to the Lord’s voice and always pray that the His will is fulfilled.
We are concerned about what true leadership is, especially because of last month’s disaster in Japan. When such disasters happen, we realize how important the leader’s existence is. We realize that the leader will influence the nation’s fate.
Because of this, who we think of as our Lord, the master of our lives is the very first thing we should consider. Many people think they should control their life by themselves or should be steered by husband, children or wealth. But the Bible says, NO your master should be LORD Jesus only.
But don’t go home and say to your husband “I went to church and heard my master is not you.” Originally a husband and wife are created to be equal and to look up to the same direction to God and help each other. This is the secret to the happiest marriage.
If any of you is having a problem with your spouse, family, or you are the one who has been sitting where Lord should be and realized that that is not the place you should be, why don’t you think about who the real master is for yourself, for you and your spouse, or for your family?
In the athletes’ world, if the team cannot achieve its goals, its coach will be changed. If you feel your life is stuck and confused by some old masters sitting on your throne, why don’t you ask our new Lord, Jesus Christ to come to sit on the throne for your life from now on?
Lastly, I would like to talk about what it is like to live by proclaiming “Jesus is Lord”.
How should we live with “Jesus as Lord”?
In Luke6:46~49, the bible says as Jesus parable. “
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
There is nothing difficult to understand in this parable. People lived a normal life until the flood came. They all lived as usual with no regards to who built their house on the rock or who built their house without a foundation. Perhaps people who built their house without a foundation would have spent the money and the time that was left for their pleasures or they might have used those for gorgeous exteriors. They might have not understood the people who built the house on the rock because they did not think the flood would ever come to their place.
But the time has come. The flood attacked these houses. The houses on the rock remained and the houses without a foundation collapsed and the damage was severe. This is not talking about the flood such as the tsunami that happened in Japan, but the huge waves that affect our lives. When this happens, the foundation will not be there for those who just say “Lord, Lord”. The foundation will stand for only those who listen to the words of the Lord and obey Him.
As Jesus said in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven; but only he who does the will of my Father who is in Heaven.”
Perhaps we say “Let’s praise our Lord!” and sing to Him every Sunday and we might pray in the name of Lord Jesus Christ every day. But the essential thing is not singing “Lord, Lord” or praying repeatedly.
Are you really listening to the words of the Lord Jesus and obey Him?
James said the same thing in James 1:21~25
21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this—not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
Each of our lives is different. Though, the causes of these differences are not complicated. These days, I am starting to realize that the whole concept is very simple. What makes these differences in each of our life is if you “do it or not”.
Yes, “Do it or not”. We tend to say we know what we should do, but some of us “don’t” do it and some of us actually “do” it. There is such a huge difference in our life whether you DO or NOT. James said in verse 25
25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this—not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
Let us not only confess that Jesus is our Lord, but also listen to His words and obey His words in our lives. Let’s pray.
