神のひとり子イエスを信じる

ビル・ゲイツは「死んでも滅びない」ソフトを開発することはできませんし、オバマ大統領は「永遠の命を全国民に差し上げます」という選挙公約をあげることはできません。このようなことを言いうる人間は今までもいませんでしたし、これからもいないのです・・・。

私達はこれまで使徒信条にあります「我は天地の造り主、全能の父なる神を信じる」ということを見てまいりました。このことに関して自然界を見渡し、その秩序というものを見れば、神の存在というものを認めることができるということをお話してきたわけです。まさしくこのお方は全能であり、できないことがないということ、そしてそれゆえに私達はそのようなお方を神と呼んでいるのだということ、しかも、そのお方を私達は「父、ダディー」と親しく呼ぶことが許されているということをお話したと思うのです。

そして、今日、見ていこうとしますことは、その次の使徒信条の一文で、「我はそのひとり子、我らの主イエス・キリストを信じる」ということです。「キリスト教」とはまさしくイエス・キリストの「キリスト」を指すものであり、まさしくこの一文というものは、クリスチャン信仰にとって最も大切な意味をもつものであります。今日はこの私達が信じているイエス・キリストについて三つのことをお話します。１）イエスとは誰か。２）自分だけでイエスは信じることができない　３）イエスがこの地に来た理由。まず最初に「イエスとは誰か」ということを見てまいりましょう。

イエスとは誰か

よく書物の最後などにその著者を紹介する項目があります。もしイエス・キリストというお方の紹介記事を書くとしましたらこんな風になるのかなと考えてみました。

イエス・キリスト：２０００年前にベツレヘムの馬屋に生まれ、大工の家庭に育ち、自らも匠として生計をたて、私達が今日経験するような生活の困難、病気や災い、そして人の死、諸々の事柄を経験し、その歳３０にして、三年のあまり人を愛し、神の国を宣べ伝え、病める者を癒し、弟子を育て、その最後に捕らえられ、ムチ打たれ、十字架に磔にされ、十字架の上から「父よ彼らをおゆるしください。彼らは何をしているのか分からずにいるのです」と祈られ死なれた方。そして、三日目に死人の中からよみがえって、度々、その姿を人々に示され、最後には天にかえられ、やがて再び、この地に戻っくると約束されているお方。

「この人はいったい何者なのか」という問いかけがありますが、それは全ての人に対して投げかけられているものではありません。このような思いを相手に抱かせる人というのは、他の人には到底、持ち得ない何かをもっている人のことで、そのことを知る者達は「この人の正体は何なんだ」というような思いがわくのです。

ですから、聖書に記されているキリストのはたらきというものを見ます時に、私達はいったいこのお方は何者なのかという思いを抱くようになり、それゆえにこの問いについて昔から古今東西（こきんとうざい）、人間は繰り返し考え、議論をしてきたのです。ある人達はこのイエスを「優れた宗教家」と呼び、ある人達は「稀に見る道徳家」だといい、果ては「ジーザス・クライスト・スーパースター」と彼を呼び、踊り出す人達もいます。

そして、何を隠そう、このような問いというのは実際にイエス・キリストが活動していた時に既に人々の間にもあったものでありまして、マタイによる福音書１６章１３節‐１４節にはこのようなことが書かれています。

13イエスがピリポ・カイザリヤの地方に行かれたとき、弟子たちに尋ねて言われた、「人々は人の子をだれと言っているか」。14彼らは言った、「ある人々はバプテスマのヨハネだと言っています。しかし、ほかの人たちは、エリヤだと言い、また、エレミヤあるいは預言者のひとりだ、と言っている者もあります」。

このところから分かりますことは、当時の人達もこのイエスについて「この人は何者か」ということに関心をもっており、イエスをして「このお方はバプテスマのヨハネだ、エリヤだ、エレミヤや預言者のひとりだ」と過去に実在した偉大な聖徒達の名をあげて論じていたというのです。しかし、それらを聞きつつ、イエス様は「人々がどう言っているかではなくて、あなたたちはどう思うのか」と弟子達に尋ねました。すかさずペテロがこう答えました「あなたこそ、生ける神の子キリストです」（１６）。

ペテロが答えた、この「神の子キリストです」という言葉は「あなたは神です」ということです。そして、私達もこのペテロと同じ呼び名をもってイエスを神として崇めているのです。J.G.メイチェンという神学者は｢キリスト教信仰とは『イエス・キリストが神を信じたように、我々も神を信じる』という宗教ではなく『イエス･キリストが神である』と信じる宗教なのである」と書いておりますが、まさしく私達も彼の言葉に同意するのです。二つ目のことをお話します。それは「自分だけではイエスを信じることはできない」ということです。

自分だけでイエスを信じることができない　

ここまであたかも私は「イエスは神の子キリストです」ということを受け止めているかのように話しておりますが、中には「いや、そんなことはないだろう」ということを考えていらっしゃる方もいるかと思います。そうです、天地万物の創造者の存在ならまだなんとなく分かるけれど、その神の子があのベツレヘムの飼い葉おけに寝かされたということになりますと「ちょっと待ってくれ」ということになるのです。

そして、そのような私達の思いを既に見越しているかのようにイエス様は先のペテロの信仰告白を受けてこのような不思議なことを言われました。１７節をみてみましょう。17すると、イエスは彼にむかって言われた、「バルヨナ・シモン、あなたはさいわいである。あなたにこの事をあらわしたのは、血肉ではなく、天にいますわたしの父である。

イエス様は「あなたこそ生ける神の子キリストです」と言ったペテロに「あなたは幸いだよ。本当によかったね。あなたに「わたしが神の子キリスト」だということを知らしめたのは、あなたの経験や知識によるのではなくて、天にいます父なる神によるのだ」と言いました。

すなわち、このことはこういうことです。私達がイエスを慈善家、道徳家、革命家と呼ぶ時に、それらの呼び名は私達の心にある経験や知識から出てきたもです。しかし「イエスは生ける神の子である」ということになりますと、それは父なる神が私達にはたらきかけてくださったことであり、このようなことは自分の力で告白できるようなものではないということです。ですから、もし私達がイエスこそ神の子だというような思いをもつことができたとしましたら、そこには神の憐れみと恵みが十二分に注がれているというのです。

前回、私達は盲目的な信仰ではなくて、その信仰には知識というものが伴うということをお話しました。しかし、それにつけ加えて、しかし最後は私達と神様との間に「信仰という橋」をかけて、そこを渡る以外にないということをお話しました。まさしく、そのことはこのことを言っているのです。私達は私達を取り囲む自然界やその法則を見聞きする時に神の存在を認めることはできますが、「イエスは神の子である」ということを告白するということになりますと、それは神のあわれみによって、私達がそのことを信じるようにされる以外にないのです。

このことを深く思ったパウロがエペソ２章８節に書いているではありませんか「あなたがたの救われたのは実に、恵みにより、信仰によるのである。それは、あなたがた自身から出たものではなく、神の賜物である」。

まことに私達がイエスを神とし、その神の子なるキリストによって救われたということは、まさしく神の恵みにより、信仰によるのであって、それらは私達が予めもっていたあれやこれやによるのではないのだということです。最後のことを見ていきましょう。それは「イエスがこの地に来た理由」ということです。

イエスがこの地に来た理由

そして、イエス様は言われたのです「あなたはペテロである。そして、わたしはこの岩の上にわたしの教会を建てよう。黄泉の力もそれに打ち勝つことはない。19わたしは、あなたに天国のかぎを授けよう。そして、あなたが地上でつなぐことは、天でもつながれ、あなたが地上で解くことは天でも解かれるであろう」（１８節、１９節）

この箇所はもう覚えてくださっているでしょう、私達の教会の表玄関に掲げている言葉です。イエス様はこの「あなたこそ生ける神の子キリストです」という信仰告白を岩として、わたしの教会を建てようと言われたのです。

サンディエゴ教会の土台はこの信仰の告白の上にあるのです。この上に私達の教会は建っているのです。そして、イエス様はその教会について「黄泉の力もそれに打ち勝つことはない」と言われました。これは「死の力もそれに打ち勝つことはない」ということです。

このところで分かることはイエス様は人の宿命である「死」ということを常に意識しており、同時に「天国」ということもいつも強く意識しておられたということです。このメッセージを準備していてあらためて気がつかされたのですが、イエス・キリストというお方は何を語るにも、何をなさるにも「人は必ず死ぬ」ということを意識し、同時に「しかし、恐れるにおよばない。私はあなたのために天に場所を備えている」ということを常に念頭に置いて、そのことを実現するためにその生涯を歩んでくださったということです。

あのヨハネ３章１６節、１７節には聖書のエッセンスというものを一言で言い表した有名な一文が記されています「神はそのひとり子を賜ったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで永遠の命を得るためである。神が御子を世に遣わされたのは、世を裁くためではなく、御子によって、この世が救われるためである」

時々、私達は神様を見失ってしまうことがあります。特に自分の身の回りで考えてもいなかったような不幸に見舞われますとこの傾向は強くなります。しかし、そのような時の自分の心というものを考えていますと、その時に私達は、このイエス様がこの地上に神の子として来られてた理由というものを忘れてしまっているということに気がつかされます。

それでは、その理由と何でしょうか。それはこのヨハネ３章１６節が記しておりますように、私達が誰一人として滅びることなく、永遠の命を得るということです。「一人も滅びないで」というのは「不死身となる」ということではありません。「死んで、その後に滅びることがないように」ということです。そして「永遠の命」を得るためだというのです。

ここで申し上げたいことは、聖書どこを見ましても、イエス・キリストは一度たりとも「世界経済の波に私達が打ち負かされてしまうことがないため」とか「病や災いが私達に及ぶことがないため」とか「あらゆることから守られ、一人残らず病が癒され、富を得ることができるように、自己実現できるために」この世界に来られたとは言っていないということであります。

もう一度、申しあげます。イエス・キリストが言われた救いとは何かといいますとそれは「私達を死から救い、永遠の命を与える」ということのためなのです。明らかにイエス様の全ての言動はこのことを前提として話をしているのです。そして、このようなことを言いうるお方を私達は「神」と呼ぶのです。なぜか？ビル・ゲイツは「死んでも滅びない」ソフトを開発することはできませんし、オバマ大統領は「永遠の命を全国民に差し上げます」という選挙公約をあげることはできないからです。このようなことを言いうる人間は今までもいませんでしたし、これからもいないのです。

今週、私達はグッドフライデーを迎えます。イエス・キリストが十字架にかかってくださったことを想います。聖書はイエス様が私達の罪のために十字架にかかってくださったというのです。２０００年も前の出来事ですし、なんとも飛躍した話のように聞こえます。さらに、さらに、このお方は十字架上で死に、墓に葬られ、三日目によみがえられ、今も生きておられるというのです。そして、そのことによって私達にも死からの勝利、永遠の命が約束されているというのです。

ああ、なんということでしょうか。お分かりになると思います、神の力なくして、このようなことを信じることができないということを。このお方をして「我はそのひとり子、我らの主イエス・キリストを信じる」とその信仰を告白するのことなどはできないということを。

19わたしは、あなたに天国のかぎを授けよう。そして、あなたが地上でつなぐことは、天でもつながれ、あなたが地上で解くことは天でも解かれるであろう」

イエス様はこのペテロとの会話をこのような言葉で閉じました。これは、私達教会に天国の鍵が授けられているということです。私達教会がこの地上でつなぐことは天でもつながれ、地上で解くことは天でも解かれるというのです。私達は来週の日曜日には洗礼式をもちますが、洗礼を受けるということは、まずその人が自分は罪人であるということを認め、その自分の罪がイエス・キリストの十字架上の身代わりの死によって完全に赦されているということを信じることです。教会はその人が心から悔い改め、イエス・キリストがその自分の罪の身代わりとして十字架にかかってくださったと信じるのなら、その罪の赦しを宣言し、その人にバプテスマを授け、その人が確かに天国とつながったということを見届けるのです。

４月４日、敬愛します島正子さんが天に召され、昨日そのメモリアルサービスがもたれました。島さんは長い間、私達の教会のメンバーであられました。島さんもその生涯、イエス・キリストに出会い、そしてこのキリストの十字架を前に、その罪が赦され救われたお方でした。そして、その瞬間から同時に死の力に打ち負かされることのない力をいただき、永遠の命が約束されたのです。ですから、私達が昨日もちました島正子さんのメモリアルサービスとは彼女との永遠の別れを意味するものではなくて、天国に旅立つ彼女を皆で見送るようなものなのであり、その時に私達は心の中で「先に行かれて私達を待っていてください」と言いうることができるものなのです。

私がこの教会に遣わされてから島さんのメモリアルサービスは日本語部に限りますと１４番目となります。一つ一つのサービスには亡くなられた方たちとの思い出があります。それらを振り返ってみて本当に幸いだなと思うのは、一つ一つのメモリアルサービスにおいて、彼らに与えられた永遠の命の希望というものを語ることができたということです。確かに主はその方たちを受け入れてくださり、彼らは新しい命を永久に生きているのだということを確信をもって話すことができたということです。そして、私達がこのような驚くべき最後をもつことができるために私達にかかっていることは全て、私達が「我はそのひとり子、主イエス・キリストを信ず」という信仰を告白しているか、否かによるのです。お祈りしましょう。

I Believe in Jesus Christ,
God’s only begotten son

Matthew Chapter 16 Verses 13-20 April 17, 2011

Last week we studied the phrase “I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth” in the Apostles Creed. We learned that we can see the presence of God everywhere when we see the nature around us. God is in fact almighty and omnipotent. We call him God for that reason. And yet, we are permitted by God to address him intimately as “father” or “daddy.”

This morning, we want to study the next phrase in the Apostles Creed, namely “I believe in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord.” Christianity is all about this Christ, the Jesus Christ. This phrase carries very important significance to Christian faith.

This morning, let us consider three key points about Jesus Christ:

(1) Who is Jesus?

(2) We cannot truly know Jesus without help.

(3) Why was Jesus sent to us?

Let us look at the first point, namely “Who is Jesus?”

Who is Jesus?

Books often provide a brief description of the author on a back cover. Such a short description, when applied to Jesus Christ, might read as follows:

Jesus Christ: Born 2000 years ago in a manger in Bethlehem. Grew up as a member of a carpenter family. Experienced and observed the same difficulty, suffering and death in life as we have. At the age of 30, for about three years, he spread the word of Kingdom of God, healed the sick, and nurtured his disciples. At the end, he was arrested, flogged, and executed on a cross. He prayed “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” He rose from the dead in three days, revealed himself to people, and returned to Heaven. He is expected to return to this Earth.

Occasionally, we are compelled to ask “Who is this person?” We do not do so lightly. Something must have impressed us or moved us about that person over and beyond other people. So, we ask: “Who on earth is this individual?”

As we learn about the works of Christ recorded in the Bible, we are moved by this individual called Jesus. And, that is why people everywhere throughout the human history have been asking: “Who is this Jesus Christ?” Some referred to Jesus as an “outstanding religious figure”, or as “a rare moral leader”, and some called him as “the Jesus Christ Superstar”

These same questions were asked by the contemporary people of Jesus Christ also. Gospel according to Matthew, Chapter 16 Verses 13-20 says, for example:

¹³When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” ¹⁴“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”

As you can see here, these people also wanted to know “Who is Jesus?” And they used to argue that he is John the Baptist, is Elijah, is Jeremiah or one of the other prophets, naming great saints of the time. Then, Jesus said: “I am not interested what other people say about me. Who do YOU say I am?”

¹⁶Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Peter said “You are the Son of God”. In other words, Peter said “You are God.” And, just as Peter did then, we too refer to Jesus Christ as God. Theologian J.G. Machen said that Christian faith is not a religion in which “we believe God in the same way Jesus Christ believed in God”. But rather, the Christianity is the religion in which “we believe Jesus Christ as God.” And we agree wholeheartedly.

Let us move to the second point: We cannot truly know Jesus without help from God.

We cannot truly know Jesus without help

Perhaps I gave you an impression that I have accepted Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, on my own. But, some of you might have doubts saying it is quite impossible for anyone to do so. For example, it might be easier to accept that there must have been someone who had created this world. But it is not easy to accept that the Son of such God was found resting in a manger in Bethlehem.

As if to anticipate our doubting mind, Jesus responded Peter with this interesting remark in Verse 17:

¹⁷Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.

When Peter said “You are Christ, son of the living God”, Jesus said “You are blessed. Good for you. However, you have come to know me as the son of God not through your experience or knowledge, but because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you.”

When we call Jesus as a philanthropist, moralist, or revolutionary, such names come out from our own experience and knowledge. But, we cannot confess and call Jesus “Son of living God” unless there is help from our God the Father. So, if we are able to confess from our heart that Jesus is indeed the Son of Living God, that must have come from God’s grace and blessing.

Last time, I mentioned that our faith is not a blind belief and that faith must be accompanied by knowledge. And, ultimately and additionally, only way to obtain faith is to find and cross the “bridge of faith” between God and us. This is exactly the same thinking. Even if we can acknowledge the presence of a god when we observe the nature around us, we cannot confess that Jesus is the Son of Living God without the grace of God which helps our eyes to open to that surprising fact.

Paul felt the same way, and was moved to say, in Ephesians Chapter 2, Verse 8:

”For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

Only through the grace of God, and only through faith, can we accept Jesus as God, and accept the fact that we are saved by Jesus, the Son of God. Such salvation is not something we obtain through work.

Let us look at the last point: “Why was Jesus sent to us?”

Why was Jesus sent to us?

Then, Jesus said: “¹⁸Now I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. ¹⁹And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you lock on earth will be locked in heaven, and whatever you open on earth will be opened in heaven.”

You might recall that this is the same phrase posted in front of our church entrance. Jesus told us to build our church based on our belief that Jesus is the Christ, Son of living God.

The foundation of our San Diego Church is this faith. Our church stands on that. And Jesus said that even the powers of hell will not overtake such a church. It means that even the power of death cannot conquer such church.

Jesus was always aware of “death” that all of us human have to face, and he was equally aware of “heaven.” In other words, Jesus was always mindful that we human have to die eventually, and reminded us about that reality, and yet told us also that we need not be afraid about death since Jesus had already prepared a place for us in heaven. His entire life was all about spreading this good news.

There is that famous declaration in John Chapter 3, Verses 16 and 17:

¹⁶“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. ¹⁷For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. “

From time to time, we lose sight of God, especially when we encounter unexpected tragedy or hardship in our life. But, we also realized that we lose sight in such circumstances because we have forgotten the reason why Jesus Christ was sent to this earth.

What then was this reason? As it is written in John 3:16, Jesus was sent to this earth so that none of us should perish but gain eternal life. “Not perishing” does not mean that we become “immortal.” It means that we do die, but do not perish even after death. Jesus came so that we can gain the “eternal life.”

Nowhere in the Bible it is mentioned that Jesus Christ came to this world “to help us overcome the crashing waves of world economy”, “to protect us from diseases and disasters”, “to grant each of us with enough wealth”, or “to help us realize our worldly dreams.”

Let me state it again, the salvation Jesus Christ mentioned means that Jesus came to save us from death and to grant us with eternal life. Mission of Jesus was based on this amazing and simple declaration. We call Jesus Christ as God because of this. No one else can make such a claim. Bill Gates cannot develop software that would make people immortal. President Obama cannot make a campaign promise to provide everyone with eternal life. That is simply not possible.

Good Friday comes in this week, and we are reminded that Jesus Christ has died on the cross for us. The Bible says Jesus died on the cross to redeem us from our sins. This took place over 2,000 years ago. Story of Jesus does not hit us as a reality. And, it is said that Jesus died on the cross, was buried in a cave, has risen in three days, and is alive today. And, this promises that we can conquer death and are promised eternal life.

Clearly it is not possible for us to understand and believe such profound event without the help from God. We are not capable of confessing: “I believe in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord” without help from God.

¹⁹And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you lock on earth will be locked in heaven, and whatever you open on earth will be opened in heaven.”

Jesus concluded his conversation with Peter with these words. This means that the key to the Kingdom of Heaven is given to our church, too. Whatever we lock on earth will be locked in heaven, and whatever we open on earth will be opened in heaven.

We will have a baptism ceremony on coming Sunday. To be baptized means that the person acknowledges that the person is a sinner, and to believe that the sins have been forgiven completely by Jesus Christ. And when the person repents and believes that Jesus has died on behalf of the individual for its sins, the church can declare redemption of the sins, baptize him, and declare that the bridge to heaven has been opened.

On April 4, our beloved Ms. Masako Shima was taken to heaven. We held a memorial service for her yesterday. Ms. Shima was a long-time member of this church. She has met Jesus, lived in faith, and was redeemed from all sins by the cross of Jesus. When she accepted Jesus, she was granted power to conquer the power of death, and was promised an eternal life. Thus, we did not mourn the departure of her from this earth. Rather, we have celebrated a send-off party for her journey to heaven. Our message to her was, “Have a wonderful trip to heaven and wait for us to join you later.”

Since I have come to this church, I have presided over 14 memorial services over members of Japanese-speaking congregation. Each service was filled with fond memory of respective individual. I feel truly blessed that at each of these memorial services, I could talk about the blessing of the eternal life granted to these people. I was sure that the Lord had accepted these people and I could declare with conviction they are now living the new eternal life. Such an amazing new life is promised at the end when we confess that “I believe in Jesus Christ, his only begotten son, our Lord.”

Let us pray.

４）１８節、１９節を読みましょう。このところでイエス様は「私達が死の力に勝つことができる」ということ、また「私達に用意されている天国」について触れています。ヨハネ３章１６節も読みつつ、イエス様がこの地に来た理由ということを考えて見ましょう。私達が時に神様を遠く感じる時に、私達はこの理由を忘れて、目下、私達の心にある問題や願いだけを何とかしてくれるように神様に祈っていることがありませんか。
