アテネにてパウロはきっと出せる限りの大きな声で『この世界と、その中にある万物とを造った神は、天地の主であるのだから、手で造った宮などにはお住みにならない』（使徒行伝１７章２４節）とあの当時、この地球上で最も荘厳なパルテノン神殿を指さしてこの言葉を言ったことでしょう。たとえその神殿が人間の英知を結集した西洋文明のランドマークとなるようなものであっても、それはパウロの偽ることのない真実な確信だったからです。

信じるべき神

私達は「キリストを知る」という標語と共に新年度を歩み始めています。そのために、これからの礼拝においてヨハネによる福音書からイエス・キリストの姿に近づきたいと申し上げました。そして、その最初として先週、私達は開口一番「はじめに言葉があった。言葉は神と共にあった。言葉は神であった」（１）で始まるヨハネによる福音書を見ました。そして、その言葉は神であったということをお話しました。私達の意表をつくこの唐突な言葉には何の説明もなく、それは当然の前提なのだという確信がその言葉には滲み出ていました。そうです、聖書は「神は存在するのか、しないのか」ということを論じる書ではなく、「神はある」ということを大前提として書かれているのです。このことを心に留めつつ、今日はその先の聖書のみ言葉に注目してまいりましょう。
9すべての人を照すまことの光があって、世にきた。10彼は世にいた。そして、世は彼によってできたのであるが、世は彼を知らずにいた。11彼は自分のところにきたのに、自分の民は彼を受けいれなかった。12しかし、彼を受けいれた者、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、彼は神の子となる力を与えたのである。13それらの人は、血すじによらず、肉の欲によらず、また、人の欲にもよらず、ただ神によって生れたのである。
本日、まず最初に見てまいりますことは「受け入れられない、それでも伝え続ける」ということです。
受け入れられない、それでも伝え続ける。
9すべての人を照すまことの光があって、世にきた。10彼は世にいた。そして、世は彼によってできたのであるが、世は彼を知らずにいた。11彼は自分のところにきたのに、自分の民は彼を受けいれなかった。
すべての人を照らすまことの光があって、世にきた。その光は言うまでもありません、イエス・キリストのことです。自らユダヤ人であったヨハネは「我ら、ユダヤ民族を照らす光があって世にきた」とここに書いていません。「全ての人を照らすまことの光があって、世にきた」と言いました。
全ての人ということは、私達もそこに含まれているということです。「えっ！」って思われる方がいるかもしれませんが、そうです、この光は私達をも照らしているというのです。そして「彼は自分のところにきたのに、自分の民は彼を受け入れなかった」とあります。これは当時のイスラエル、すなわちユダヤ人をまず指しているものです。
ユダヤ人はまさしく自分達の只中にキリストがいるのに、彼を受け入れることがありませんでした。それのみか最後にキリストは彼らによって十字架にかけられたのです。このようにキリストの福音はユダヤ人に受け入れられずに、以後、ユダヤ人以外の者達、すなわち私達のような異邦人の間に受け入れられていくのです。驚くべきことは、このことに対してパウロはキリストの時代をさかのぼるところ７５０年前に生きた預言者イザヤ、さらにさかのぼること１５００年前のモーセの言葉を引用してこう書いているのです。
19なお、わたしは言う、イスラエルは知らなかったのであろうか。まずモーセは言っている、「わたしはあなたがたに、国民でない者に対してねたみを起させ、無知な国民に対して、怒りをいだかせるであろう」。20イザヤも大胆に言っている、「わたしは、わたしを求めない者たちに見いだされ、わたしを尋ねない者に、自分を現した」。21そして、イスラエルについては、「わたしは服従せずに反抗する民に、終日わたしの手をさし伸べていた」と言っている（ローマ１０章１９節－２１節)。
神は反抗するユダヤ人に向かって終日、その手をさし伸べていたけれど彼らはその手を握ることなく、かえって異邦人である者達に神は見出されるのだとここには書かれており、まさしくそれは今日の世界のクリスチャニティーの動向を見れば明らかなことです。現在、ユダヤ人におけるクリスチャン人口は一パーセントに満ちることはないのですが、ユダヤ人以外の民族にこのクリスチヤニティーは過去２０００年を通して、広がってきたことは明らかなことです。しかしながらそのような状況の中でも、ご存知のように異邦人である私達日本人のクリスチャン人口に関して言えば、私達もユダヤ人と同じように一パーセントに満たない民族なのです。そのような意味ではヨハネが書き記しました『彼は自分のところにきたのに、自分の民は彼を受けいれなかった』（１１）という言葉は私達にも当てはまる言葉です。
しかし、それであってもヨハネが記しているように、私達を照らすまことの光が今も私達の上に注がれているのです。パウロは言っています。12ユダヤ人とギリシヤ人との差別はない。同一の主が万民の主であって、彼を呼び求めるすべての人を豊かに恵んで下さるからである。13なぜなら、「主の御名を呼び求める者は、すべて救われる」とあるからである（ローマ１０章１２節－１３節）。
イエス・キリストの前にユダヤ人もギリシヤ人もない。日本人も韓国人もない。アメリカ人もロシア人もない。神はその名を呼び求める全ての人を豊かに恵んでくださるお方なのです。しかし、そのためには既にクリスチャンとなっている者が成さなければならないことがあります。このことは私達に託されていることです。
14しかし、信じたことのない者を、どうして呼び求めることがあろうか。聞いたことのない者を、どうして信じることがあろうか。宣べ伝える者がいなくては、どうして聞くことがあろうか。15つかわされなくては、どうして宣べ伝えることがあろうか。「ああ、麗しいかな、良きおとずれを告げる者の足は」と書いてあるとおりである（ローマ１０章１４節－１５節）。
どうして信じたことのない者を呼び求めることがありましょうか。すなわち、聞いたことがない方をどうして信じることがありましょうか。そうです、伝える者がいなければ聞くことも、信じることもできません。そのことは先に神を呼び求め、その神を信じた私達に託されていることなのです。
今は時代が変わりました。２０年前になされていたことがされなくなりました。２０年前、私は日本で多くの伝道用のトラクトを配りました。ある時は道行く人に、ある時は家々を巡りポストに入れ、北は北海道、南は鹿児島の島々まで、大都会、そして田舎を歩いてトラクトを配り続けました。延べで数えたら数万枚は配ったことになりますでしょう。しかし、はたしてその中からどれだけの人が実際に教会に足を運んだことでしょうか。一般的に一万枚、トラクトを配って一人が教会に足を運んでくれたらいいと言われていました。しかも、教会に足を運んでも、そこから実際にイエス・キリストを知ることにいたるかは分かりません。
今日、インターネットにより私達は地球の裏側にまで私達が発しているメッセージを送ることができます。そのような意味では、２０年前よりも宣教の可能性は広がっているのです。読もう、聞こうと思えば私達はいつでも、どこででも聖書に関するメッセージを聞くことも、読むこともできるのです。このことを思えば、インターネットの普及率が増えることはクリスチャンになる方の数と比例して増えるはずです。しかし、現実は増えるどころか日本に関していえば、減少しているのです。
しかし、私達は伝え続けます。ただ闇雲に伝えるのではなくて、日本人とは何かを学び、その伝える対象の方の心情を知ることを怠らず、私達はこのことを続けていかなければなりません。そんな私達を聖書の言葉は励ましてくれるのです。
『朝のうちに種をまけ、夕まで手を休めてはならない。実るのは、これであるか、あれであるか、あるいは二つともに良いのであるか、あなたは知らないからである』（伝道の書１１章６節）。『5涙をもって種まく者は、喜びの声をもって刈り取る。6種を携え、涙を流して出て行く者は、束を携え、喜びの声をあげて帰ってくるであろう』（詩篇１２６篇５節－６節）。
私達は種をまき続けます。種をまく人はどの種が実を結ぶか、その一粒の種からいくつの実が結ばれるか分かりません。すべきことはその種を蒔くことです。蒔かれた種がその後、どうなるかということは私達の領域ではないからです。ゆえに私達は種をまき続けます。時に涙をもって種をまくこともありますが、いつの日か喜びの声と共にそれを刈り取ることができることを信じます。涙を流して出ていったとしても、喜びの声をあげ、収穫の束をもって帰ることができることを私達は信じます。二つ目のことをお話します。それは「出生や努力は問いません」ということです。

12しかし、彼を受けいれた者、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、彼は神の子となる力を与えたのである。13それらの人は、血すじによらず、肉の欲によらず、また、人の欲にもよらず、ただ神によって生まれたのである。
今日、見ておりますヨハネ１章１２節の「しかし」という言葉からこのヨハネの文章はがらりと変わります。私達の多くは神を受け入れることがない。しかし、彼を受け入れた人、すなわちその名を信じた人々には神は、神の子となる力を与えたというのです。英語の聖書はこのところを神の子となる特権を与えたと書いていますが、そのほうが原文に近いかと思われます。
そして、そのことは私達の「出生や努力」とは何ら関係がないのです。血筋によらずとは私達の先祖にどんな人間がいたとか、肉の欲や人の欲とは神の子になるための自分の努力とは関係なく、ただ主イエスを受けいれた者、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、彼は神の子となる特権を与えるのだというのです。
そうです、神と私達を結ぶ架け橋は「信仰」だというのです。日本語の信仰という漢字をとって言いますのなら、信じて仰ぐということです。そうです、ただそれだけです。そして、ということはどういうことかと言いますと、私達が神の子となるために、私達の側でできることはその神を信じること以外、何一つないということです。でも信じるということであるのなら、幼子でも死にいく間際の人にでもできることです。私達が考えうる最も公平で、最もそのチャンスがある条件、それが信じるということなのです。
数か月前、オバマ大統領が日本を訪問しました。その時に日本政府は大統領を銀座にある有名鮨屋に招き、大統領は安倍総理大臣と会食しました。日本政府はその接待の場所を駅のホームにある立ち食いそばやマクドナルドにしませんでした。なぜなら相手はアメリカ合衆国を代表する大統領だからです。大統領は神ではありません。バラク・オバマさんも人間、その彼を同じ人間が接待するのですから、オバマさんが喜んでくれるもの、楽しんでくれるもの、そして受け入れてくれるものを日本政府は考え、それを提供したのです。
しかしながら私達が今、見ていることは「神の前に受け入れられる」ということです。よくよく考えましょう。私達が言っている神とは大きなお腹を突き出している七福神ではなく、真っ赤な鳥居の奥に置かれているきつねでもありません。この天地万物を治めておられるお方、私達に命を与え、その命を保ってくださるお方です。そのようなお方に対して私達がこのお方に受け入れていただくためにできることは私達の信仰以外に何一つもないのです。
ギリシア、アテネは世界で最も古い町でその歴史は３４００年もあります。言うまでもなく、そこは芸術、学問、哲学の中心であり、西洋文明、また民主主義のルーツとなった都市とされており、その影響の大きさはとてつもないものです。そのアテネにはパルテノン神殿という世界遺産があります。それはイエス・キリストが誕生する４４０年も前に建てられた巨大な大理石の神殿で、神殿というからには、その建物はギリシア神話の女神アテーナを祀るために建てられたものです。おそらく当時、この地球上でもっとも荘厳な神殿であったことでしょう。
そのパルテノンが建築された時を経た５００年の後、キリストの使徒パウロはイエス・キリストを伝えるべくこのアテネの町の通りにおいてキリストを伝えていました。そうしましたところ、哲学者達の目に彼がとまりまして、それなら彼の話を聞いてやろうではないかとアレオパゴスという一枚岩の上に彼は連れられて行きます。その時の様子が使途行伝１７章に記録されています。
19そこで、彼らはパウロをアレオパゴスの評議所に連れて行って、「君の語っている新しい教がどんなものか、知らせてもらえまいか。20君がなんだか珍らしいことをわれわれに聞かせているので、それがなんの事なのか知りたいと思うのだ」と言った。21いったい、アテネ人もそこに滞在している外国人もみな、何か耳新しいことを話したり聞いたりすることのみに、時を過ごしていたのである。22そこでパウロは、アレオパゴスの評議所のまん中に立って言った。「アテネの人たちよ、あなたがたは、あらゆる点において、すこぶる宗教心に富んでおられると、わたしは見ている。23実は、わたしが道を通りながら、あなたがたの拝むいろいろなものを、よく見ているうちに、『知られない神に』と刻まれた祭壇もあるのに気がついた。そこで、あなたがたが知らずに拝んでいるものを、いま知らせてあげよう（使徒行伝１７章１９節ー２３節）。
皆さん、このパルテノン神殿は建設から２５００年もたっていますから、現在、修復が必要な状態ですが、今もアテネにそれはあり、パウロが連れていかれたアレオバゴスの丘もアテネに残っています。そう、これが現在のパルテノン神殿とアレオパゴスの丘です。ここは全世界のキリスト教徒が立ち寄る場所であり、この岩にはこれから読みます使徒行伝のパウロの言葉の記念碑がたっています。彼はこの丘で何を語ったのでしょうか。続く使徒行伝１７章は彼が語ったことをこう記録しています。
24この世界と、その中にある万物とを造った神は、天地の主であるのだから、手で造った宮などにはお住みにならない。25また、何か不足でもしておるかのように、人の手によって仕えられる必要もない。神は、すべての人々に命と息と万物とを与え、26また、ひとりの人から、あらゆる民族を造り出して、地の全面に住まわせ、それぞれに時代を区分し、国土の境界を定めて下さったのである。
パウロはきっと出せる限りの大きな声で「この世界と、その中にある万物とを造った神は、天地の主であるのだから、手で造った宮などにはお住みにならない」とあの当時、最も荘厳な神殿を指さしてこの言葉を言ったことでしょう。たとえその神殿が人間の英知を結集した西洋文明のランドマークとなるようなものであって、それはパウロの偽ることのない真実な確信だったからです。
私もかつてこのパルテノン神殿に行きました。とても大きな神殿でした。世界遺産と言われるのもよく分かりました。そして、このアレオバゴスの丘に立って、そのパルテノンを見上げました。すぐ目の前にその神殿はありました。しかし、その時に思いました。私もパウロと同じように、その神殿に治められるような神を崇めようとは思わないと。
私は銀座の鮨屋で私達と同じようにカウンターに座って箸で鮨を食べる人に私の人生を委ねることはできません。同じように人間が造った建物の中に納まるような神に私は自分の大切な人生を預ける気にはなりません。人間の頭から生まれた設計図を基にしてつくられた、そんな神殿の中にいる、ちっぽけな神に私の大切な人生をかけようとは思はないのです。それでは私の心が向かう存在はどんなお方なのでしょうか。
正直申しますとパルテノン神殿を前にした時よりも、その幾十倍、グランドキャニオンを初めて見た時の感動は大きなものでした。競って世界中の企業が作り出しているロボットがじゃべった、歩いたと喜んでいるロボットを見てその技術に感嘆しますが、それと生まれたばかりの我が子を抱いた時の感動を比べることなどできません。どんなに有名なデザイナーが造った最先端の洋服の色合いも、誰も目にかけることがない野原に咲く一輪の花の可憐さに勝ることはありません。
もし今、パルテノン神殿を建てた当時の設計図というものがあり、それが私の前に置かれて、この神殿はこのような理由で、この所はこうして作られたのですと説明していただけば、おそら素人の私でもそのことを理解することはできると思います。なぜなら、それは私と同じ人間が考えて、造ったからです。
パウロは言いました『この世界と、その中にある万物とを造った神は、天地の主であるのだから、手で造った宮などにはお住みにならない。25また、何か不足でもしておるかのように、人の手によって仕えられる必要もない』と。
私達が信じるお方はあのグランドキャニオン渓谷を足台とし、我が子に命を吹き入れ、野に咲く一輪の花をデザインした神です。そのようなお方でありますゆえに、人の手で作られた宮などにはお住みになりませんし、また何か不足しておるかのように、人の手によって仕えられる必要もないのです。そうです、ですからこの神の前に私達の先祖にどんな人間がいたとか、自分の努力などは全く意味のないことで、私達にできることは、このお方を信じる、そう信じる以外には何もないのです。
私達はこれから日曜日毎にイエス・キリストを見ていきます。キリストは神でありながら、人の姿をとられ、この世界に来たということも見ていきます。このイエス・キリストの名がでる限り、そこにはマリアの処女降誕、キリストのなさった諸々の奇跡、十字架による人類の罪の赦し、そしてキリストの死からの復活ということが私達の目の前に並べられます。
ある人はこれに躓き、ある人はそれまで読んでいた聖書をため息交じりに閉じます。しかし、今日、お話しましたように、神はこれらのことについてそれを理解せよと言っているのではありません。血筋が優れている者には分かり、努力した者には理解できるというようなことをことごとく聖書ははねのけます。そして、ただ信じなさいと言うのです。
14しかし、信じたことのない者を、どうして呼び求めることがあろうか。聞いたことのない者を、どうして信じることがあろうか。宣べ伝える者がいなくては、どうして聞くことがあろうか。15つかわされなくては、どうして宣べ伝えることがあろうか。
ですから、私達はこれからもこの神の物語を語り続けていくのです。我らの神は知恵と知識と芸術の殿堂であるパルテノンに住むお方ではなく、この天地を足代としておられる全ての存在の源なるお方です。このお方に私達が向き合うすべは信じるということ、ただそれだけなのです。そして、彼を信じた時、私達は神の子となる特権が与えられるのです。そして、このことに勝る特権は私達の人生にはないのです。お祈りしましょう。

We have started this new year with thegoal of “knowing Christ”. And as I have said before, we will be looking into the book of John to get a closer understanding of Jesus. Last week, as the first message in this series, we looked at the beginning of the book of John, which starts off with, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” We talked about how the Word was God. These words written so boldly, with not even an explanation, come to us as a surprise. Yes, the bible is not written to argue or discuss if there is a God or not, but written with the solid fact that “God is” as a major premise. With this in mind, let us focus our attention to today’s scripture.
“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:9-13)
The first thing we will be looking at today is “Being rejected, yet continuing to pass it on”

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. This light, with no doubt, is Jesus Christ. John, who was a Jew, did not write “The true light that gives light to us Jews was coming into this world” but wrote, “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into this word”.
This “everyone” even includes us. Some of you may be thinking “huh!?” but yes, this light shines even on us. And it goes on to say, “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.” This is pointing to Israel of the time, the Jews. Jesus was with the Jews, yet they did not receive him. And not only that, but they ultimately put him on the cross. In this way, Jesus was not accepted by the Jews, and since then, gentiles like us have accepted Him. The astonishing thing is that Paul writes quoting the words of Isaiah, who lived 750 years before, and Moses, who lived 1500 years before Jesus’ time.
Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, “I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.”
And Isaiah boldly says, “I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.”
But concerning Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.” (Romans 10:19-21)
It says here that God held out His hand to the rebellious Jews, but they did not take it but instead, God will be found by the gentiles. It is clear if you were to look at today’s trend of Christianity in the world. The current percentage of Christian Jews is less than 1%, but in the last 2000 years, Christianity has widely spread among the others in this world. But we Japanese, who are also gentiles, are just as the Jews, with less then a 1% Christian population. In this way, it also applies to us where John writes, “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.”
But even so, as John says, the true light that gives light to everyone is shining on us. Paul says, “For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” (Romans 10:12-13)
To Jesus, there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, or Japanese and Koreans, or Americans and Russians. God richly blesses all who call on His name. But there is something we must do. It is something entrusted to us.
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:14-15)
How can we call on someone we do not believe in? And how can we believe in someone we do not know about? Yes, if there is no one to pass on the word, no one would be able to believe. This is what God has entrusted on to us who call and believe in Him.
Times have changed. Things that had been done 20 years ago, are not anymore. 20 years ago, I distributed many evangelism tracks. Sometimes to people walking on the street, and other times in to the mailboxes of each house. From Hokkaido in the north to as far down south as Kagoshima; in the big cities and country sides, I distributed the tracks. If I were to count how many, there must have been tens of thousands of tracks I distributed. But I wonder, out of so many, how many actually led people to go to a church? Generally, I was told that its good if one person out of ten thousand tracks distributed. And even if they did go to a church, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they were able to come to know Christ.
Today, we are able to send messages to the other side of the earth. If you think about it, the possibilities of evangelism have widely increased compared to 20 years ago. If we feel like reading or hearing, we are able to access messages on the bible anytime, anywhere. This should mean that the wide spread use of the internet should increase the number of Christians. But, reality is not so. In Japan, the number is decreasing.
Yet, we will continue to pass on the message. Not blindly, but without neglecting to think about the feelings of those we evangelize to. The words of the bible continue to encourage us,
Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them. (Psalms 126:5-6)
We will continue to sow our seeds. The person who sows the seeds do not know which ones will bear fruits or how many it will produce. What we must do is to sow the seeds. It is beyond our control what will happen after the seeds are sown. Sometimes we may sow with tears, but we believe that there will be a day when we reap with songs of joy. The second thing we will be talking about is “Neither birth nor effort is questioned”.
Neither birth nor effort is questioned
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12-13)
From the word “yet”, this passage from John dramatically changes. Many people do not receive God. It is written: yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
And this has nothing to do with our birth or effort. Not of natural descent means that it doesn’t matter what sort of ancestors you have, but by receiving Jesus, by believing in his name, he will give the right to become the children of God.
Yea, the bridge between us and God is “faith”. The Japanese word for faith, is written with the two characters, believe and respect. That is all there is to it. To become a child of God, there is nothing we can do but to believe in God. Even a child or a person on their death bed could choose to believe. Out of all the conditions we can think of, this is the most reasonable and most forgiving conditions. It is to believe.
A few months ago, President Obama visited Japan. The Japanese government invited the president to a famous sushi restaurant in Ginza, and he dined with Prime Minister Abe. The Japanese government did not set up the meeting to be at a stand-and-eat soba stand at the train station, or at a McDonalds. It is because it was the president, a man who represents the United States of America. The president is not a god. Barack Obama is just another human, so the Japanese government thought about what Mr. Obama would like, enjoy, and accept.
But what we are looking at now is to be “accepted by God”. Lets think. The God we are talking about is not the large bellied deities of good luck, or a fox at the end of a red torii shrine archway. He is the one who governs all of creation, gave us life and continues to take care of us. And there is nothing we can do but to believe, to be accepted by such a person.
The Greek city of Athens is the world’s oldest city and its history extends to over 3400 years. It was the center of art, scholarship, and philosophy, and is at the root of western civilization and democracy. And in Athens there is a World Heritage temple called Parthenon. It is a huge marble temple built 440 years before Jesus’ birth to worship the Greek goddess Athena. It was probably the most impressive temple of that time.
About 500 years after the temple Parthenon was built, Jesus’ apostle Paul was teaching and spreading the word of Jesus in the city streets of Athens. And when doing this, a philosopher thought to hear what he has to say, and was taken above a monolithic. It is recorded in chapter 17 of the book of Acts on this event.
“Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” (All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.) Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.” (Acts 17:19-23)
Although it is in need of repairs and reconstruction, this Parthenon temple still stands today, 2500 years after its construction, and the hill of Aeropagus where Paul was taken also exists today in Athens. Yes, this is the current state of the Parthenon temple and the hill of Areopagus. This is a place where Christians from all around the world gather. And on the rock is a monument for the apostle Paul. What did Paul preach at this hill? It is recorded in chapter 17 of the book of Acts.
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. (Acts 17:24-26)
Paul must have said as loudly as he could, “he God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands” pointing to the most impressive temple of the time. Even though that temple would be come to known as a landmark of western civilization, it was clearly the truth.
I have also gone to the temple of Parthenon. It was a very large temple. It was easy for me to see why it is one of the World Heritages. I stood on the hill of Aeropagus and looked up onto Parthenon. The temple was right there in front of me. I remember thinking then that I would not worship such a god that lives in a temple.
To be honest, the sensation I had seeing the Grand Canyon was much much more compared to seeing the Parthenon temple. When I see the new robots being built competitively by companies, I am impressed with the technology, but it is still not even a close match to what I feel when I held my new born child. No matter how famous of a designer puts together a top trend color coordination, it will never be able to surpass the loveliness of a single flower blooming in a field.
If the blue prints of the Parthenon temple were present in this day, and if it were to be set in front of me to be explained why the temple was designed to be built in this way, even a novice like me would be able to understand why. It is because it was designed and created by just another human like me.
Paul said, “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything.”
The one we believe in carved out the Grand Canyon, gave life to my child, and designed the flower blooming in the field. Because He is such a God, He would not live in a temple built by humans, nor does He need anything to be provided by humans. That is why no matter what sort of ancestors we have or how much effort we put in has no meaning to Him. The only thing we can do is to believe.
Each Sunday, we will be looking at Jesus Christ. We will also be looking at how Jesus being God, came in the form of a man to this earth. As far as the name of Jesus Christ goes, we will take a look at everything from the virgin birth of Jesus from Mary, the miracles that Jesus did, forgiveness of our sins by the cross, and his resurrection from death.
Some may stumble or close their Bibles with a sigh when reading and learning about these things. But God does not tell us to understand everything. The bible does not say that those with good lineage or those who put great effort into it will understand. It tells us to just believe.
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
That is why we continue to tell and pass on these stories. Our God is not a god that lives in the temple of wisdom knowledge and art, Parthenon, but He is the creater of the whole universe. The only way we can face Him is to believe in Him. And if we believe, we are given the right to become His children. There is no greater reward we can get in our entire life then this. Lets pray.
