「送り人」は日本人であってもあまり馴染みのない納棺夫（のうかんふ）について描いている映画です。納棺夫とは亡くなられた遺体を棺に納めるために、その遺体を整える人達のことで、亡くなられた方のからだに真摯に向き合う心遣いが世界で評価を受けたのだと思います。愛する者を失った人の心はアメリカであっても、日本であっても変わりません。その体に真心を込めて向き合うということは、その故人への愛情をあらわしているからです。
「おくり人」というタイトルを見ていて何か気がつかれることがありませんか。そう、「送り人」という映画は故人に対して私達ができる半分のことを描いている映画だということです。そうです、「送り人」がいるのなら、「迎え人」がいないと。どんなに丁重に愛する者を送ったとしても、その人達はどこに向かい、その先では誰が彼らを迎えてくれるのですか。
確かに今のところ、私達は「送り人」です。これまでも多くの人達を送ってきました。しかし、やがていつの日か、私達は「送られる人」となるでしょう。はたして送り出したものの、送り出されたものも、私達はどこに向かうのですか。送るのなら、迎えてくれる人を求めるのは当然の考えではありませんか。

神の愛はいかほどに大きいのか

「死」というものは誰の人生にも必ずめぐってくるものです。世界のどこに行きましても、人間は皆、この死といつも向き合っており、当然、その死の先にある世界ということについても思いめぐらします。そして、そこから多くの宗教が生まれます。愛する人が死後、どこにいるのか、その後、その人がどのようになったかということを考えることは不思議なことではありません。
人のからだを物質として考えますのなら、その体の機能がとまるということは、長い間使っていたテレビがつかなくなったり、冷蔵庫が使えなくなることと同じです。まさか使えなくなったテレビや冷蔵庫がその後、どこか天国にいくのかと考える人は“あまり”いません。「あまり」と言いましたのは、実際には日本のお寺ではハサミ、包丁、かばん、財布などを供養する所があります。「供養」という言葉は「死者に対して冥福を祈る」ということですから、そこには物にも命が宿るというような信仰があるのかもしれません。ハサミや財布に対してさえもこのような思いを持つのなら、私達の愛する者達に対する思いはいかほどでありましょうか。
私達は先週、ヨハネ３章１６節の前半に書かれていること、すなわち『神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった』ということを見てまいりました。愛というものがどのように証明できるかということについて、それは「何をその人に与えるか」ということで証明できるとお話しました。そして、私達が誰かに与えうるものとして最大のものは、私達の命であり、イエス・キリストはこの命を私達にお与えくださったことにより、神の愛が私達に明らかにされているということをお話しました。そして、このことに続いて、次の言葉があるのです。『神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである（ヨハネ３章１６節）
ここに「永遠の命」と言う言葉があります。毎日を生きていくことに精一杯、一生懸命の私達にとって「永遠の命」と言われても私達の思いは、そんな先のことまでにはいたらないというのが現状なのかもしれません。しかしながら、このヨハネ３章１６節は、神の御子イエス・キリストを信じる者は滅びることなく、永遠の命を得ると約束しています。もっと言いますのなら、このヨハネ３章 １６節から分かることは、「御子を信じる者が永遠の命を得るために、神はそのひとり子を私達にお与えくださった」ということなのです。なぜ、神はそれほどまでして私達に永遠の命をくださろうというのでしょうか。
ご存知のようにイエス・キリストには１２人の弟子がおり、イエス様は彼らと三年半の間、寝食を共にしました。そして、その１２弟子以外にイエス様には友人がいました。その中で特に親しかったのは聖書の中にも出てくる、エルサレムから二マイル足らずの所にあるベタニヤに住むマリア、マルタ、そしてラザロという兄弟姉妹でした。イエス様は度々、彼らの家を訪問され、親交を温めていたようです。
しかし、ある時、このラザロが瀕死の病気になりまして、そのことがイエスのもとに伝えられたのです。イエス様はラザロのもとに行きますが、その時には既にラザロに息はなく、墓に納められていました。ヨハネはその時のことをこう記してます。
32（ラザロの姉妹である）マリヤは、イエスのおられる所に行ってお目にかかり、その足もとにひれ伏して言った、「主よ、もしあなたがここにいて下さったなら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょう」。33イエスは、彼女が泣き、また、彼女と一緒にきたユダヤ人たちも泣いているのをごらんになり、激しく感動し、また心を騒がせ、そして言われた、34「彼をどこに置いたのか」。彼らはイエスに言った、「主よ、きて、ごらん下さい」。35イエスは涙を流された。36するとユダヤ人たちは言った、「ああ、なんと彼を愛しておられたことか」（ヨハネ１１章３２節‐３６節）。
イエスはその時に涙を流されました。何を見て、イエス様は泣いたのでしょうか。ラザロの亡骸はまだこの時、見ていません。イエス様はマリアが泣き、また彼女と一緒にいたユダヤ人達も泣いているのをごらんになり、激しく感動し、心を騒がせ、そして涙をながされたのです。もちろんイエス様はこれまでも人の死というものを間近に見ていたことでしょう。どうすることもできないその悲しみを知っていたことでしょう。それらを知りつつ、このところでも死というものが人の間にどんなに大きな悲しみをもたらすものであるかを見て、愛する者達が悲しむその涙を見て、ご自身も泣いたのです。
時に、このイエス様の涙を私達も共有します。亡くなってしまった方のことを思い流す涙、そして私達は亡くなった人の死を悲しんでいる者達の姿を見て涙します。どんなに故人はこの人達にとって大切な人だったのだろうということを思う時に、私達も鼻の奥からこみ上げてくるものがあり、それが溢れるかのようにして私達の眼から流れ出るのです。イエス様は愛する者達が死を前に、どうすることもできないでいる、その姿を見て、泣いたのです。
『神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった』。イエスはご自身の命を捨てるほどに私達を愛してくださった。これに加えて先週、お話しましたローマ書のパウロの言葉を覚えていらっしゃいますか。『ご自身の御子をさえ惜しまないで、わたしたちすべての者のために死に渡されたかたが、どうして、御子のみならず万物をも賜わらないことがあろうか』（ローマ８章３１節－３２節）
命を捨てるほどに私達を愛されたお方は、その愛ゆえに私達が死に対して恐れること、死を悲しむ姿を放っておくはずがありません。自ら愛と称するお方が、私達人間の前に立ちはだかる、この巨大な壁、私達が恐れ、悲しみ、目をそむけたくなる死に手をつけないはずがないのです。『ご自身の御子をさえ惜しまないで、わたしたちすべての者のために死に渡されたかたが、どうして、御子のみならず万物をも賜わらないことがあろうか』。ここに記されている「万物」の中の筆頭に来るものが「永遠の命」であるということを誰が否定できるでしょうか。神が自らを愛なる者と称するのであるのなら、その愛は私達の地上の間のことだけではなく、それは永遠の命への招きにまでいたると考えることは私達には不思議なことではないのです。
ヨハネ黙示録には私達の世界が今後、どのようになっていくのかということが預言されています。そして、私達が死んでどこにいるのか、そこで何をしているのかということが書かれています。 13長老たちのひとりが、わたしにむかって言った、「この白い衣を身にまとっている人々は、だれか。また、どこからきたのか」。14わたしは彼に答えた、「わたしの主よ、それはあなたがご存じです」。すると、彼はわたしに言った、「彼らは大きな患難をとおってきた人たちであって、その衣を小羊の血で洗い、それを白くしたのである。15それだから彼らは、神の御座の前におり、昼も夜もその聖所で神に仕えているのである。御座にいますかたは、彼らの上に幕屋を張って共に住まわれるであろう。16彼らは、もはや飢えることがなく、かわくこともない。太陽も炎暑も、彼らを侵すことはない。17御座の正面にいます小羊は彼らの牧者となって、いのちの水の泉に導いて下さるであろう。また神は、彼らの目から涙をことごとくぬぐいとって下さるであろう」（ヨハネ黙示録７章１３節ー１７節）。
このところに記されている小羊とはイエス・キリストのことを示しています。そこでは白い衣を身にまとった者達がおり、その衣の白さは、イエスの十字架の血によって洗い清められたものなのだというのです。そうです、あちらの世界に行きましても、私達のために命を捨てられたキリストの十字架の力が語られているのです。そうです、「キリストの十字架」と「永遠の命」は切り離すことができないものなのです。
私達は願っていない最期を迎えるかもしれません。生きている間、どうすることもできない寂しさや悲しみに生きることもあるかもしれません。死ぬ時にそのような悲しみを持参して私達はこの世界を去らなければならないかもしれません。神が愛というのなら、そのような者達に向かって「残念だったね」と声をかけて終わるはずがないのです。神の愛はそのような者達の頬から流れる涙をぬぐいさってくださる、そこにまでおよぶというのです。どうして愛する者が流す涙をそのままにしておくことができようか。故に主イエスご自身が御国において、私達の牧者となり、命の水に導いてくださり、神自ら私達の目から涙をことごとく拭い取ってくださるのです。

イエス・キリストは十字架にかかる前、弟子達に言われました。1「あなたがたは、心を騒がせないがよい。神を信じ、またわたしを信じなさい。2わたしの父の家には、すまいがたくさんある。もしなかったならば、わたしはそう言っておいたであろう。あなたがたのために、場所を用意しに行くのだから。3そして、行って、場所の用意ができたならば、またきて、あなたがたをわたしのところに迎えよう。わたしのおる所にあなたがたもおらせるためである（ヨハネ１４章１節ー３節）。
神の愛は完全です。私達の罪を赦し、私達を義なる者とし、さらにそれのみならず、私達が死を迎えた先に既に、このキリストはおり、私達を迎えてくださる。ご自身の命を惜しまずに私達に与えたお方は、人生の旅路を終え、様々な悲しみ、苦しみをも経験して死んだ私達に対して、何を望んでいらっしゃるのか。彼らのその涙をそのままになさることをせずに、私自ら彼らの涙を拭い去ってあげたい、そう神は望んでいるというのです。私はあなたを愛している。しかし、それはあなたが死ぬ時までのことで、その先は私には関係がないということではない、私の愛は時間に制限されるものではなく、永久に私はあなに私の愛を与え続けたいのだというのです。
イエス様はかつて言われました。『18わたしはあなたがたを捨てて孤児とはしない。あなたがたのところに帰って来る。19もうしばらくしたら、世はもはやわたしを見なくなるだろう。しかし、あなたがたはわたしを見る。わたしが生きるので、あなたがたも生きるからである。20その日には、わたしはわたしの父におり、あなたがたはわたしにおり、また、わたしがあなたがたにおることが、わかるであろう。21わたしのいましめを心にいだいてこれを守る者は、わたしを愛する者である。わたしを愛する者は、わたしの父に愛されるであろう。わたしもその人を愛し、その人にわたし自身をあらわすであろう』（ヨハネ１４章１８節ー２１節）。
イエス様は『わたしはあなたがたを捨てて孤児とはしない』（１８）と言われました。孤児とはしないというのは、あなたがたを送り出しておいて、そのままにはしておかないということです。それでは私のあなたがたへの愛は全うされない。私があなたがたを孤児としないと言っているのは、この地上でのことだけではなく、たとえあなたが死んでも、私はあなたがたを必ず迎える。その時、『あなたがたはわたしを見る。わたしが生きるので、あなたがたも生きるからである。20その日には、わたしはわたしの父におり、あなたがたはわたしにおり、また、わたしがあなたがたにおることが、わかるであろう』（１９，２０）というのです。
こうして私達が死んでも私達を迎え入れてくださるお方がいるという、そのことを知るということは私達が死について備えをするということです。そして、その備えができた時に、それは私達の死後の希望や喜びになるだけではなくて、今を生きる私達の今日という一日をも変えます。自分はどこに行くのか。死んでしまったらおしまいではないかという虚無が支配するこの世界において、私達を迎えてくださるお方がいる。私達はそこに行くのだという確信に立つ時に、そこから逆算して、それでは私は今、何をすればいいのかということが分かってきます。自分の生涯に本当に何が必要なのか、何が必要ではないのかということがわかります。その時に私達は本当の意味で神に造られた人間として生きることができるのです。
パウロというキリストの宣教者はかつてイエス・キリストを宣べ伝えたために獄に捕われていた時、その獄中からピリピにある教会に手紙を書きました。今日のような人権が確立されていない時代にあって、獄にいるということは、権力を掌握している者達の不公平な裁きや、きまぐれによって、極刑を受けなくてはならない状況にあったことでしょう。故に当然、パウロは獄中で自分の死について考えたことでしょう。しかし、今日お話しているヨハネ３章１６節の約束を私達と同じように既に聞いているパウロにとって、死に対する思いは多くの者達が考えるそれとは異なっていました。彼はこう書いています。
20そこで、わたしが切実な思いで待ち望むことは、わたしが、どんなことがあっても恥じることなく、かえって、いつものように今も、大胆に語ることによって、生きるにも死ぬにも、わたしの身によってキリストがあがめられることである。21わたしにとっては、生きることはキリストであり、死ぬことは益である。22しかし、肉体において生きていることが、わたしにとっては実り多い働きになるのだとすれば、どちらを選んだらよいか、わたしにはわからない。23わたしは、これら二つのものの間に板ばさみになっている。わたしの願いを言えば、この世を去ってキリストと共にいることであり、実は、その方がはるかに望ましい（ピりピ１章２０節ー２３節）。
彼にとってたとえ取り囲む者が全て彼に反する者達であったとしても、そこでいつものようにキリストを大胆に語ることができるのなら、そして、それによって死ぬようなことがあったとしても、それでキリストがあがめられるのなら、それこそが私が切実な思いで待ち望んでいることなのだ。もはや私にとって死は漠然とした恐れではなく、イエス・キリストにあって死ぬということはどのような意味をもつものなのかを知っている私にとって生きることはキリストであり、死ぬことすら益なのだというのです。さらには、生きていることによって、キリストを伝えるというはたらきにおいて、まだ実りを得ることができるのなら、生き続けるのもよし、しかし、正直な自分の願いを言えば、この世を去って、キリストと共にいることのほうがはるかに望ましいというのです。主にある皆さん、はたして私達はこのように「生」と「死」を考えているでしょうか。これはパウロだけの思いなのでしょうか。いいえ、よくよく考えますと、ヨハネ３章１６節を文字通り、私達が受け止め、その御言葉に生きるのなら、私達が行きつくのは、このパウロの心なのです。
パウロはまたその生涯に多くの手紙を書きましたがその一番最後に書きましたテモテ第二の手紙の中で、自分の地上での歩みはいよいよ終わりに近づいていることを感じたのでありましょう。その時に自分の気持ちを自分の愛弟子であるテモテに向けてこう書き残しました。5しかし、あなたは、何事にも慎み、苦難を忍び、伝道者のわざをなし、自分の務を全うしなさい。6わたしは、すでに自身を犠牲としてささげている。わたしが世を去るべき時はきた。7わたしは戦いをりっぱに戦いぬき、走るべき行程を走りつくし、信仰を守りとおした。8今や、義の冠がわたしを待っているばかりである。かの日には、公平な審判者である主が、それを授けて下さるであろう。わたしばかりではなく、主の出現を心から待ち望んでいたすべての人にも授けて下さるであろう（Ⅱテモテ４章５節ー８節）。
パウロは自分がすべきことが分かっていますから、神様が彼に与えられた走るべき行程を走りつくせば、もう自分はこの地を大いなる満足と共に去ることができる。さらにはあちらでは私は主から義の冠をいただくのだというのです。これらの言葉の中にパウロの人生が、パウロの日々の暮らしが何と充実していたか、もはや我が生涯に悔いなしというパウロの心をうかがい知ることはできないでしょうか。
アメリカにきて１６年。その間に２８人の方達のメモリアルサービスの司式をさせていただきました。彼らは確かに今、私達と共にいません。しかし、彼らは今も主と共におります。その約束の言葉はヨハネ３章１６節です。『神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである（ヨハネ３章１６節）
私達がやがて天の御国において、私達を迎えてくださるキリストに出会い、その公平な審判者なるお方から義の冠をいただく時に、私達の頬からは歓喜の涙が流れ落ちることでしょう。なぜですか、なぜなら私達がその義の冠を受けるために、キリストは私達のために茨の冠をかぶってくださった、その額の傷跡を私達が目の当たりに見るからです。私達にヨハネ３章１６節の約束をお与えくださった主はほむべきかな！お祈りしましょう。
How big God’s love is!

Usually, Japanese movies will become DVDs in Japan. But, if they win international acclaim, these DVDs will be sold in other countries, too. For example, we can get DVDs of Japanese movies with English sub-titles like “Seven Samurai” of Akira Kurosawa, or “Shall we dance?” here in the U.S. We also can get American remake versions of these two movies. “Okuribito” is one of these movies, English title, “Departure.” This movie won many awards not only in Japan, but also in other countries, including the Academy awards.
“Okuribito”, literary means a sender, is a story of an embalmer, also translated into English, means, A Coffin Man. His business is a management of a funeral. He prepares a dead body to make it look natural for the funeral and to send them off. What he is doing on the screen looks much more meaningful than his business. Because he was treating the deceased so sincerely and with high respect. That is why a lot of people in many countries were touched by this movie. Grief for the death of our loved ones, there is no difference between here in the U.S. and Japan or wherever. We see respect and love for the deceased from his work.
The day of death shall come to everyone. No matter where you go, all of us will be confronted by death. Then naturally, we wonder about the world after we die. That is why, we have been keep producing many religions. It is so natural for us to think what happed to our loved ones, and where they are now after their death.
If we think of our body just as a material, to stop the function of the body is just like malfunctioned TV or a refrigerator. Not many people think broken TV or refrigerator would go to heaven. I say “not many”, because some Buddhist temples hold a memorial service for scissors, knives, bags, wallets, and so on. Memorial service is for their soul of the dead to pray for their repose in Buddhism. Then, they might have belief that even materials had a life, means soul? If you have such an affection towards just material things, like scissors or wallets, how big is our love for our loved ones?
I talked about first half part of John 3:16 last week, ”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son.” How can we prove “LOVE”? Love can be proved by what we give him (or her). The biggest gift that we can give is our life. And Jesus Christ, he gave himself to us to reveal how much God loves us. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
“Eternal life”! For most of us, just living hard day by day, even if somebody says, “eternal life”, it might sound too far to think about in our noisy busy life. However, this John 3:16 promises the eternal life for whoever believe in Jesus Christ, His only holy son. I keep emphasizing John 3:16, says, “He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Why? Why does He want to give us eternal life even he must give His only son?
As you know, Jesus had twelve disciples. Jesus lived with them for three and half years. Besides them, he had some close friends according to the Bible. They were brother and sisters, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus who lived in Bethania, only two miles away from Jerusalem. Jesus often had a fellowship with them. One day, He became gravely ill and Jesus got to know about it. When Jesus arrived at their house, he already died and was in the tomb. We can see it in the Gospel of John 11:32-36.
32When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see me, Lord,” they replied. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jew said, “See how he loved him!” (John 11:32-36)
Jesus wept. He started weeping for what? He had not seen the dead body of Lazarus at that moment yet. Jesus saw Mary weeping and Jews along with her weeping, too. That made him moved and troubled in His heart, then started weeping. Jesus must have experienced somebody’s funeral before. He knew helpless, hopeless sorrow. He knew what it is. Even He knew how much sorrow somebody’s death bring to us, he started weeping by seeing the tear of his loved ones.
Sometimes, we share this Jesus’s type of tear, when we remember our loved ones who passed away. And also, just like Jesus, we started weeping by seeing weeping people in grief. When we imagine how much that person was important for them, we feel something coming up from deep inside our nose, and overflow from our eyes. Jesus was weeping before the persons who was in deep grief.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.” Jesus so loves us that He died Himself for us. To add it, do you remember what Paul wrote in Romans, I talked about last week? “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Romans8:32)
The Lord who loved so much that He abandoned his own life, cannot leave us in fear of death. He never ignore our huge stronghold and sorrow brought by fear of death. ”He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Did you get it? First of all he gives us is “eternal life!” He calls himself, love. He is love. And His love is not only for as long as we are on earth. God’s love is eternal. And also, Jesus invited us for the eternal life.
Revelation is prophesying what will be going on earth, and also mentioned where we will go after we die, and what are we going do there.
13Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes – who are they, and where did they come from?” 14 I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’ (Revelation 7:13-17)
“The lamb is Jesus Christ. There are people in white robes. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb, Christ Jesus. Yes, in heaven, they are praising God for the power of the Cross of Jesus Christ in heaven. Yes, we cannot separate from “Cross of Jesus” to “Eternal life”.
We might have unexpected last moment of our life. Some of us are going through loneliness or sorrow in hopeless situation. We might die in such a hopeless situation. But, if we believe, “God is love”, we also believe God would not only say “Sorry for that”, but God himself will wipe away every tear from our eyes. Because the Bible says so. God loves us so much that he cannot leave our tear on the cheek. So also in heaven, Jesus is our shepherd, guild us to the living water and wipe away every tear from our eyes.
I just mentioned about the Japanese movie, English title is a “Departure”, Japanese title is a “Okuribito”, literary means a “Sender”. If you see this original Japanese title “Sender”, do you notice anything? Yes, this movie as a “Sender” just tells us half part of “departure” that only we can do from our side. You get it? If there is a “sender” for the death from here, our side, we need a ‘greeter’ for them at the other side. Otherwise, no matter how nicely we send them off, we will never know where they are going. And who will welcome them there?
At this moment, we are a “sender”. We have sent many people off. However, all of us will be sent off one day. Then, after we send them off, or after we will be sent off, where will we be going? If we send our loved ones off, isn’t it normal to look for somebody who welcomes us?
Jesus told his disciples before crucified; 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2My father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John14:1-3)
God’s love is perfect. God forgives our sin to make us righteous before Him. Furthermore, Jesus himself will welcome us when we will die. Jesus, who gave himself for us, what does he want to do for us when we will see HIM after we finished our life, had been going through many sorrow, and suffering? Jesus wants to wipe away all of our tears. Jesus is talking to us, “I love you forever. My love for you is timeless, and eternal, forever and ever.
Jesus promised in verse 18-20; 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”(John 14:18-21)
Jesus said; “I will not leave you as orphans”. It means that Jesus won’t leave you after sending you off. If He just send you off and leave you, His Love towards us never be accomplished. What Jesus is saying here is; He is not only talking about on the earth but also promises you that He will welcome you after you die. “But you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. (John 14:19-20)
To know the truth that Jesus will welcome us after we die will give us right mindset about eternal life with HIM. Once you get the truth, it will become our hope, even joy. We will be completely changed how to live every day here for eternal life there. Where will I go? We are living in the world mostly controlled by atheism, everything seems to be in vain after we die. But, for us, as believers, we have Jesus in us. And when we can get it for sure, where we are going, and Jesus will welcome us there, we will be able to know clearly what we should do right now, what we really need to do or not for His kingdom. When you really get this truth what He gave us, we literary can live as a man, or woman of God.
Paul was put in jail because he preached the gospel. When he was jail, he wrote a letter to Phillip from jail. I guess the circumstances in jails at that time, when human right was not guaranteed like today, it must have been a horrible situation. They were terrified by unfair judges or mistreatment by the authorities. Paul should have thought of his own death. But for Paul, he took the concept of death” differently from the majority. He wrote in his letter, in Philippians 1:20-23.
20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; (Philippians 1:20-23)
For Paul, even if he was surrounded by people against him, if he could just keep preaching the Gospel among those people, even if he will be killed because of the gospel, if God is glorified by what Paul is doing, that is his desire. Death is not fearful anymore for him. Because Paul knew what means death in Christ. For Paul, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Paul says “But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor. But he has desire to depart and be with Christ. Brothers and sisters, have we ever considered “to live” and “to die” like Paul? Is this idea only for Paul? No, it is not only for Paul. If we got John 3:16 in you, and to live in it, we should reach to the same heart as Paul.
Paul wrote many letters in his life. In his letters, Second Timothy is last letter before he died. He wrote to Timothy at his ending time on the earth in Second Timothy 4:5-8, 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (2Timothy4:5-8)
Paul knows what he should do. He just needs to finish his race given by God to him, then he will leave this earth with great sufficiency. Furthermore, he is sure to get the crown of righteousness from the Lord. We can say that Paul was content with all the ways of his life, working hard for the Kingdom with joy.
Sixteen years has passed since I came to the U.S. Since then I did a memorial service for twenty eight brothers and sisters. They are not with us here on earth now. But, surely, they are with Jesus in heaven. We can tell so, because we believe in God’s promise, John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
One day we will meet Jesus who will welcome us in heaven. And when he gives us the crown of righteousness, we will cry. Why? Because we will see his deep forehead scar caused by the crown of thorns. We praise the Lord! Who gave us the promise of John 3:16. Let’s pray.

１）ヨハネ１１章３２節‐３６節を読みましょう。この時の状況とイエス様の心情について思いめぐらしましょう。なぜイエス様はこの後にラザロをよみがえらせるにもかかわらず、ここで涙を流されたのですか。イエス様は「人の死」について、どのように考えていらっしゃるのでしょうか。
２）ヨハネ３章１６節には「永遠の命」が触れられています。あなたは「永遠の命」とはどんなものだと思いますか。永遠の命が与えられるということについてあなたはどう考えますか。永遠の命が確約されているということは、今のあなたに何か影響を与えますか。
