朽ちる食物のためにではなく

その昔、まだ２０歳の時、テネシー州の田舎町に住んでおりました時に一度、北米大陸を二週間ほどかけて車で横断してロサンゼルスに来たことがありました。その時にはじめてサンタモニカの「灯台レストラン」に行きました。そうです、お馴染みのバフェ・レストランです。それまで毎日、カフェテリアでグレイビー、ビスケット、ハム、ベーコン、マッシュポテト・・・グレイビー、ビスケット、ハム・・・を毎日、食べていた二十歳の若者の前に、ずらりと並んだ寿司、それを好きなだけ食べていいよと言われた時の衝撃を想像してみてください。私はまさしくあと一つ、寿司を食べたら死んでしまうのではないかと言うほどに食べて、食べて、食べぬいたのです。まさしくその時、喉元にまで寿司が詰まっていたのか、体に酸素が行き届いていないかのように、店を出た時には酸欠でくらくらしていました。それほどまでに私は食べたのです・・・。

しかし、悲しいかな、翌朝、私はお腹が空いたのです・・・・。

朽ちる食物のためにではなく

ヨハネ６章２７節－３７節

２０１４年１１月３０日

私達は先々週、イエス様が一人の子供が持参していた二匹の魚と五つのパンを用いて、一万人もの人達を養われたという奇跡を見てまいりました。聖書には３５０回も「パン」が言及されており、しばしばその「パン」を「私達の日ごとの糧」と同じ意味をもつものとしています。今日でも「Daily Bread」とは私達の「日々の糧」を意味しています。まさしく先々週、お話しました奇跡は、そんな私達の日ごとの糧が多くの人達に与えられ、彼らは満腹したということです。そのような人知を超えた、驚くべき奇跡を目の当たりにした者達が次にどんな行動をとるかご存知ですか。ヨハネはそんな人達が次に何をしたかを明確にこう書いています。

15イエスは人々がきて、自分をとらえて王にしようとしていると知って、ただひとり、また山に退かれた（ヨハネ６章１５節）。

そうです、彼らはイエス様を自分達の王にしようとしたのです。そりゃそうでしょう、二匹の魚、五つのパンから数千の者達を養うことができる人が自分達の王であるのなら、自分達の日々の糧は保障されているようなものです。物事には「勢い」とか「追い風」というものがありまして、そのような意味ではこの群衆の勢いと熱狂的な追い風があれば、確かにイエス様は彼らの王となることができたでしょう。しかし、イエス様はそれと知って、ひとり山に退かれ、そして夕刻には弟子達と共にボートに乗り、ガリラヤ湖の対岸に向かったとヨハネは記しています。

しかし、イエス様一向が岸に着きましたところ、群衆は先回りして既にイエスを待っていたとヨハネは記しています（ガリラヤ湖は小さな湖でして舟がどこに向かっているのか、陸で見ていれば分かるのです）。そんな自分を追いかけてきた群衆に向かい、イエス様はこう言われました。『よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。あなたがたがわたしを尋ねてきているのは、しるしを見たためではなく、パンを食べて満腹したからである』（ヨハネ６章２６節）。そして、この言葉に引き続き、イエス様はなぜ、自分が山に退かれたのか、その理由をおっしゃっています。イエス様は言われました。

『27朽ちる食物のためではなく、永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物のために働くがよい。これは人の子があなたがたに与えるものである。父なる神は、人の子にそれをゆだねられたのである』(ヨハネ６章２７節）そうです、イエス様の心に揺るぎないものとしてあった思いは彼らに「朽ちる食物」を与える者としてではなく「永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物」を与える者として、自分はここにいるということだったのです。

これが私達人間の定めです。覚えていらっしゃいますか。あのサマリアの女とイエス様がスカルの井戸辺で交わした会話を。その時、彼女はその井戸に水を汲みに来ていました。その彼女に向かってイエス様は言われましたね。

『13「この水を飲む者はだれでも、またかわくであろう。14しかし、わたしが与える水を飲む者は、いつまでも、かわくことがないばかりか、わたしが与える水は、その人のうちで泉となり、永遠の命に至る水が、わきあがるであろう」（ヨハネ４章１３節ー１４節）。

そうです、食べ物だけではなく、私達に不可欠な水も一度、大量に飲めばそれでいいかといいますと、飲めばまた渇くのです。そして、これらを全て総括して言いますのなら、私達の口から入るものは全てことごとく朽ちる食物なのです。さらに広げて解釈しますのなら、私達が見ているもの、手にとることができるもの、それは何も口から入る食べ物だけではなく、私達の住んでいる家も、乗っている車も、着ている服も、私達の前からなくなります。ですからイエス様がここで言っていることは、そのような朽ちるもののために働くのではなく、永遠の命に至る朽ちることのないもののために働くがよいということなのです。そしてイエス様ご自身その明確な使命に生きておられましたから、群衆が朽ちるものを求めてイエス様のもとに大挙、押しかけてきても、その熱狂からは常に距離を置かれたのです。

しかし、この群衆は『朽ちる食物のためではなく、永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物のために働くがよい』と言われたイエス様の言葉を全く理解していないかのようにして、イエス様にすかさずこう尋ねたのです。30「わたしたちが見てあなたを信じるために、どんなしるしを行って下さいますか。どんなことをして下さいますか。31わたしたちの先祖は荒野でマナを食べました。それは『天よりのパンを彼らに与えて食べさせた』と書いてあるとおりです」。

彼らの心の中にはその時よりさかのぼること１５００年も昔、自分達の祖先がかつて荒野で体験したことがありました。そうです、数百万人にもおよぶ彼らの先祖はモーセに導かれたエジプトでの奴隷状態から逃れた後、すぐに荒野での生活が始まりました。しかし、言うまでもない彼らが導かれた場所は四方八方、草木もないような土地ですから自分達の食糧が見つかりませんでした。そんな日々が二か月ほどしてから彼らはモーセにこうつぶやきました。3イスラエルの人々は彼らに言った、「われわれはエジプトの地で、肉のなべのかたわらに座し、飽きるほどパンを食べていた時に、主の手にかかって死んでいたら良かった。あなたがたは、われわれをこの荒野に導き出して、全会衆を餓死させようとしている」（出エジプト記１６章３）

彼らは荒野で空腹となり、かつて奴隷となっていたエジプトを懐かしんだのです。あの時に肉の鍋のかたわらにおり、飽きるほどにパンを食べていた。それに対して、今の有様は何だと！あの時に死んでいたほうがましだ。お前はこんな辺鄙なところに俺たちを連れて来て、餓死させようとしているのだ！これらの民のつぶやきに対して神はモーセに言いました。4「見よ、わたしはあなたがたのために、天からパンを降らせよう。民は出て日々の分を日ごとに集めなければならない」（出エジプト記１６章４節）。この時以降、朝毎に彼らの宿営の周りには天から必要なパン、マナが与えられたのです。

このパンは「蜜を入れた焼き菓子」のような栄養が十分に備わった食べ物で、それは一人一人に十分に与えられました。しかし、時がたつにつれて、彼らはこんなことを言い始めました。『「ああ、肉が食べたい。5われわれは思い起すが、エジプトでは、ただで、魚を食べた。きゅうりも、すいかも、にらも、たまねぎも、そして、にんにくも。6しかし、いま、われわれの精根は尽きた。われわれの目の前には、このマナのほか何もない」』（民数記１１章４節－６節）。

そして、また彼らは神とモーセに向かい、つぶやいたのです。「あなたがたはなぜわたしたちをエジプトから導き上って、荒野で死なせようとするのですか。ここには食物もなく、水もありません。わたしたちはこの粗悪な食物はいやになりました」（民数記２１章５節）。

皆さん、イエス様がなぜ山に退いたか、さらにその理由がさらにお分かりになったと思います。イエス様は彼らの先祖のように与えられても一時、喜ぶだけですぐに飽きてしまい、つぶやきを言い出すような「朽ちる食物」を私達に与えるために来られたのではなく「永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物」を与えるために来、さらにはどうせ働くのなら、そのために働いたほうがよかろう、そのために生きるほうがいいだろうと私達に語りかけているのです。

驚くなかれ、このようなことが起きるということを預言した人がイエス・キリストが誕生する８００年前、今から２８００年前に預言した人がいます。そう、預言者アモスです。彼はこう言いました。

11主なる神は言われる、「見よ、わたしがききんをこの国に送る日が来る、それはパンのききんではない、水にかわくのでもない、主の言葉を聞くことのききんである。12彼らは海から海へさまよい歩き、主の言葉を求めて、こなたかなたへはせまわる、しかしこれを得ないであろう。13その日には美しいおとめも、若い男もかわきのために気を失う（アモス８章１１節－１３節）。

この預言はこの世界に飢饉が来るということを示しています。その飢饉とは食べるもの、飲むものによる飢えではなく、主の言葉を聞くことの飢饉だというのです。人は海から海へさまよい歩き、主の言葉を求めて彼方にまでいくけれど、これを得ることができないというのです。主にある皆さん、このアモスの言葉を唱えながら、この教会を出て、ブロードウエイをここからサンディエゴベイまで歩いてみてください。この言葉が何を言っているのか、私達はその光景を目の当たりにすることでしょう。

アモスは人は「主の言葉」を求めているのだというのです。しかし、大抵、私達は自分が求めていることが何なのか分かりませんから、それを見出すことができずに、あちこちを今も巡り歩いているのです。願わくばそんな方達がこの教会で「主の言葉」に巡り合ってほしいものです。私達はいつでもこの主の言葉を差し上げることができるように備えておかなければなりません。これらのことを踏まえてイエス様の言葉を聞くのなら、聖書が記している言葉が分かってきます。そう、一見、不可解なあのイエス・キリストが言われた不可解な山上の教えの一節はいかがでしょうか。『義に飢えかわいている人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは飽き足りるようになるであろう』（マタイ５章６節）

脱水症状が怖いのは自覚症状がないからです。渇きを覚えることは大切です。それを感じないで突き進むと致命的なことになります。義に飢え渇く人はさいわいなのです。そうです、もし、今、魂に渇きを覚えていらっしゃる方がいらっしゃるのなら、その人はさいわいです。その人は満たされるからです。

マタイはこんなことを記録しています。1さて、イエスは御霊によって荒野に導かれた。悪魔に試みられるためである。2そして、四十日四十夜、断食をし、そののち空腹になられた。3すると試みる者がきて言った、「もしあなたが神の子であるなら、これらの石がパンになるように命じてごらんなさい」。4イエスは答えて言われた、「『人はパンだけで生きるものではなく、神の口から出る一つ一つの言で生きるものである』と書いてある」（マタイ４章１節ー４節）。

断食をした方ならそれがどあに苦しいものであるか、お分かりになると思います。断食は最初の三日が辛いものです。その間、私達は食べ物のことしか考えていないことに気がつきます。こんなに自分は食べることに執着していたのかということに気がつかされるのです。イエス様は４０日４０夜、断食をしました。その時に悪魔は言ったのです「もしあなたが神の子であるなら、これらの石がパンになるように命じてごらんなさい」。奏悪魔がイエスに語った言葉は、その時イエス様の肉体が何よりも求めていることです。しかし、この言葉に対して石をパンに変えることなどたやすいキリストは言ったのです『人はパンだけで生きるものではなく、神の口から出る一つ一つの言で生きるものである』と。

ここにアモスの預言の答えがあるのです。私達の魂の飢え渇きは神の言葉によってはじめて癒されるのです。私達は食物だけで生きるようには造られておらず、神の言葉によって生きるようにそもそも造られているのです。

私達は何のために働いているのでしょうか。確かに働くことにより、私達は日々の糧を得ます。必要なものを手に入れることができます。しかし、そのためだけに私達のはたらきがあるのではありません。私達は永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物のために働くように造られているのです。私達の心から喜びが失われる時、何をやっても虚しい時、すなわち私達の心が渇く時、それが神様からのサインです。その時、私たちは朽ちるもののためだけにはたらいていませんか。

『27朽ちる食物のためではなく、永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物のために働くがよい。これは人の子があなたがたに与えるものである。父なる神は、人の子にそれをゆだねられたのである』(ヨハネ６章２７節）

私達が永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物のために働くということ、これはイエス様が私達に与えてくれるものです。神はこのことをイエス様に委ねたというのです。そして、イエス様ご自身もそのことを自覚され、この後にこう言っているのです。

わたしが命のパンである。わたしに来る者は決して飢えることがなく、わたしを信じる者は決してかわくことがない。36しかし、あなたがたに言ったが、あなたがたはわたしを見たのに信じようとはしない。37父がわたしに与えて下さる者は皆、わたしに来るであろう。そして、わたしに来る者を決して拒みはしない（ヨハネ６章２７－３７）。

私達がキリストのために生きる時、キリストのもとに来る時、私達は永遠の命にいたる食物のために何をしたらいいのかが分かります。神はのことをキリストに委ねておられるからです。ですからキリストは私達を招いておられるのです。キリストのもとに来るものを決して拒みはしないとイエス様は言われるのです。

私達はこれから何のために働くのですか。何のために生きるのですか。永遠の命に至る朽ちないもののために働きませんか。このために生きることは私達の喜びであり、まさしく私達の生きがいとなるのです。そう、まさしく私達がそのために生きる時、私達の人生は生きる甲斐があるものとなるのです。お祈りしましょう。

“Not for food that spoils”

We have heard the miracle of Jesus two weeks ago. Jesus fed more than 10000 people by the two fish and five breads. The Bible mentions more than 350 times about the breads, and the breads often means our daily food. Surely the story tells us that many people were fed their daily food by Jesus and they were full. Do you know what these people will do next? John wrote about what they had done.

¹⁵Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself (John 6:15).

Yes they intended to make Jesus their king by force. We understand that because if their king will be able to feed them fully, their daily bread will be guaranteed. But when Jesus knew their intention, he withdrew to a mountain, and rode the boat and shipped to the other side of the lake with his disciples.

But When Jesus arrived the land, the people was already there and waited him. The lake of Galilee is small, so they could see their boat from the land. Jesus told to the people, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill (John 6:26), and he mentioned about the reason why he withdraw to the mountain.

²⁷Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”(John 6:27) Yes indeed, Jesus understood himself who gives the food that endures to eternal life, not for food that spoils.

When I was twenty years old, I lived at small town in TN, one summer, I took two weeks and drove across the continent of US and came to the Todai restrante in Santa Monica. I had been eaten biscuit and gravy, ham, bacon, mash potatoes every day. Yes it is, I am not kidding, every day for four years. But when the young TN Japanese boy came to LA there were various kinds of Sushi before me and these were all you can eat! You know what is going to be happened. I ate, ate and ate and almost I was dying because I ate too much. I felt like the sushi were almost came up to my throat and hard to breath. I was faint because I think I did not have enough oxygen at that time because of full of sushi. But sadly, I became hungry next morning.

This is the rule for all human kind. Do you remember the conversation between Jesus and the woman at the well in Samaria? The woman came to the well to have water, and Jesus said to her.

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Our thirst will not be satisfied by consuming the water, we will thirst again. All things come into our mouth is not always enough. Whatever we can see and whatever we can touch is all perish. It is not only the things we eat but also the house we live, the car we drive, the clothes we wear will be disappeared from us. What Jesus says are not only work for perish but work for non perish. This is why Jesus was always away from the crowds, because they were wishing to have the spoiled foods from Jesus .

But the crowds did not understand the meaning of what Jesus said and asked to him.³⁰ “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? ³¹Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

The people was kept in their mind of their ancestors who were fed by God about 1500 years ago. Yes, a couple of millions of Israelites started their life in the wilderness after they escaped from Egypt, but as we can imagine that place is the barren, so they complained, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! here we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” (Exodus16:3)

They became hungry at the wilderness and remembered the days at Egypt. We sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, What is happening right now? It was better to die at Egypt! You have brought us out into this desert to starve” Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day.”（Exodus 16:4) Since this time, God gave the breads which was called manna to them from the heaven every morning.

The breads were like wafers made with honey, and gave enough to the all Israelites but by their days passed, they cried and said ⁴ “If only we had meat to eat! ⁵We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. ⁶But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!” (Numbers 11:4-6)

⁵they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”(Numbers 21:5).

Dear brothers and sisters, now you really understand more why Jesus went to the mountain. He did not come to us for providing the perishable food but he came to give us the nonperishable food and asked to work for the food which lead us to the eternal life.

Amazingly 800 years before Christ, there was a man named prophet Amos, he prophets

¹¹“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land—not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.¹²People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it. ¹³“In that day “the lovely young women and strong young men will faint because of thirst..” (Amos 8:11-13).

The prophesy indicated the famine is coming to the world and the famine is not of the food or thirst but the famine is hearing the words of God. we are stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but we do not find it. Dear brothers and sisters, if you walk down to the Broadway from here to the San Diego Bay, you will see what Amos is talking about.

Amos said we are thirsting and searching the word of the Lord, but usually we even do not know what we are looking for, that is why we are still wondering around. We wish and pray that the people will encounter the words of God at our church. We have to prepare anytime that we can share and give the words to them.As we know these things, now we understand the meaning of wondrous words in the Bible. Yes, how about the words which was spoken by Jesus Christ on the mountain.『Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled』 (Matthew 5:6).

Sometimes dehydration is scaring because it does not have symptoms. It is important to know our thirst. We will be critical if we keep going with the dehydration. Therefore if there is a people who are thirsting for righteousness right now, the people will be blessed because they will be filled.

The book of Matthew wrote “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.²After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. ³The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” ⁴Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:1-4)

Those who have experience of fasting must knows how hard that is. We find ourselves we are always thinking about foods. Jesus fast forty day forty night and the devil told him “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Yes, the devil asked Jesus what his body really wants. It was easy for Jesus the stones to become bread but Jesus said, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:1-4)

This is the answer of prophet Amos. Yes our thirst will be satisfied by the words of God. We are not created by living only breads but live by the words of God.

What do we work for? Surely we will have our daily breads by our labor, but our life is not only for that. We are crated to work for food that endures to eternal life. When our mind lose joy, if we feel emptiness, when our spirit is thirst, that is the calling from God, our father. Let us make sure, do we work for the food that spoils at that time?

²⁷Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”(John 6:27)

Jesus gives us the things to work for food to eternal life. God the Father has place his seal of approval, and Jesus understands his role, and said;

³⁵“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. ³⁶But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. ³⁷All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away (John 6:27-37).

When we come to Jesus, we will find out what we should do for the food of eternal, because God the Father has placed his seal of approval. Now Jesus is inviting us to him. Whoever comes to him, he will never drive away.

What will we work for? What will we live for? Let’s work for the eternal life. This is our joy, and gives us the worth of living. Yes indeed, truely we can fulfill our life for the worth of living. Let us pray.

１）二匹の魚と五つのパンの奇跡の後に「イエスは人々がきて、自分をとらえて王にしようとしていると知って、ただひとり、また山に退かれた」（ヨハネ６章１５節）とあります。なぜ群衆はそのようなことを思ったのでしょうか。なぜイエス様は一人で山に退かれたのでしょうか。

２）『27朽ちる食物のためではなく、永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物のために働くがよい。これは人の子があなたがたに与えるものである。父なる神は、人の子にそれをゆだねられたのである』（ヨハネ６章２７節）。今日、「朽ちる食物」とは何を指しますか。「永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物」とは何でしょうか。

３）かつて五人の夫をもち、今は別の男性と共に暮らすサマリアの女に言われたイエス様の言葉、ヨハネ４章１３節ー１４節を読みましょう。今日、人はどんなことに渇いているでしょうか。渇きを満たそうとどんなことをしますか。なぜ、渇きは癒されないのでしょうか。

４）エジプトを脱出して荒野を放浪する民たちは、神様がいつも天から降らして下さるマナに満足することなく、不満やつぶやきを言いました。この事実は人間の本質について何を意味していますか。

５）アモス８章１１節－１３節を読みましょう。このところで神様はどんな飢饉をこの世界に送ると言っていますか。本当に私達に必要なのはなんだと言っていますか。このこととイエス様がマタイ４章１節ー４節で言われていることはどう関係していますか。

６）ヨハネ６章３５節－３７節を読みましょう。あなたはこのイエス様の言葉を信じますか。なぜですか。
