「イエス・キリストと私達の関係」は、私達がキリストのためにどれだけ良いことをしたのかとか、きよい生活を送っているとか、どれだけイエスについて学んでいるかということで築きあげられるものではありません。これまで何度、「牧師さん、少しはましな人になったら教会に来たいと思います」という言葉を聞いてきたことでしょうか。それは言い方を変えれば「自分の今の足の汚れをきれいに洗って、さらには足が汚れるような生き方をしなくなったら教会に来ます」ということで、そんな言葉を聞くたびに私は心の中で思います、「おそらく、わたしはあなたに再び、会うことはないでしょう」と・・・。
『もしわたしがあなたの足を洗わないなら、あなたはわたしとなんの係わりもなくなる』 （イエス・キリスト：１３章１節ー８節）。

キリストと私の関係とは？

皆さんの年末年始はいかがだったでしょうか。クリスマスも正月も終わり、普通の日常に戻りました。そこでまた私達の年間標語であります「キリストを知る」シリーズに戻り、今日からヨハネによる福音書を順をおってみてまいりましょう。今日はまずヨハネ６章５３節－６３節を読ませていただきます。
53イエスは彼らに言われた、「よくよく言っておく。人の子の肉を食べず、また、その血を飲まなければ、あなたがたの内に命はない。54わたしの肉を食べ、わたしの血を飲む者には、永遠の命があり、わたしはその人を終りの日によみがえらせるであろう。55わたしの肉はまことの食物、わたしの血はまことの飲み物である。56わたしの肉を食べ、わたしの血を飲む者はわたしにおり、わたしもまたその人におる。57生ける父がわたしをつかわされ、また、わたしが父によって生きているように、わたしを食べる者もわたしによって生きるであろう。58天から下ってきたパンは、先祖たちが食べたが死んでしまったようなものではない。このパンを食べる者は、いつまでも生きるであろう」(ヨハネ６章５３節－５８節）。
イエス様はこのところで「血を飲む」、そして「肉を食べる」と言いました。聖書は全体を読んで理解しなければならない理由がここにあります。もし、それまで聖書を一度も読んだことのない方が、ぱっとこの箇所を開いて読んだとしますとキリスト教には人食いの教えがあるのかと誤解されます。言うまでもなく、イエス様は当然、そのようなことをここで言われているのではありません。
しかし、この聖書箇所にはこの後に、実際にこのイエス様の言葉を聞いていた『60弟子たちのうちの多くの者は、これを聞いて言った、「これは、ひどい言葉だ。だれがそんなことを聞いておられようか』（ヨハネ６章６０節）ということや
『それ以来、多くの弟子たちは去っていって、もはやイエスと行動を共にしなかった』（ヨハネ６章６６節）ということを記しています。
彼らはそれまでイエス・キリストの言動、すなわち今まで聞いたこともないような慰めと希望に満ちた言葉を聞いたり、驚くべきみわざの数々も目の当たりにしてイエス様に従ってきたのでしょう。しかし、彼らはその日、このイエス様の言葉をひどい言葉とし受け止め、去っていったのです。
よく私達は「私を見ないで神様を見てください」と言います。言わんとすることは「不完全な私を見て躓かないでください。神様だけを見てください」ということです。でも、このイエスの弟子達はイエス様を見て躓いたというのです。なぜなら彼らの心には「自分の思いや願い」が既にあって、キリストが言われたこと、成されたことがその「自分の思いや願い」にかなっていなかったからです。去っていった弟子達にとってイエスの言葉は彼らが期待するものではなく、また彼らの理解が及ばないことであったゆえに彼らは去っていったのです。「私を見ないでイエス様を見てください」と言われても、時に人はイエス様にも躓くということ、それが人間であるということを私達はしっかりと心に刻んでおかなくてはなりません。
この時にイエスを去っていた弟子達の中に、イエス様の１２弟子はいなかったようでありますが、実際にそのイエスの１２弟子達でさえ、この「血を飲む」とか「肉を食べる」ということがどのような意味なのかを本当に理解するためには時が必要でした。
そうです、ここで言われた言葉がどういうことなのか、後に彼らはそれを目の当たりにするのです。そう、それはイエス様が十字架にかかる数時間前、その舞台はあのダビンチの絵でも有名な『最後の晩餐』と呼ばれた晩の出来事です。このことはイエス・キリストの生涯においてとても重要な出来事で、マタイ、マルコ、ルカがこのことを記録しています（マタイ２６章１７節‐３０節、マルコ１４章１２節－２６節、ルカ２２章７節－２３節）。
『26一同が食事をしているとき、イエスはパンを取り、祝福してこれをさき、弟子たちに与えて言われた、「取って食べよ、これはわたしのからだである」。27また杯を取り、感謝して彼らに与えて言われた、「みな、この杯から飲め。28これは、罪のゆるしを得させるようにと、多くの人のために流すわたしの契約の血である。』（マタイ２６章２６節ー２８節）。
同じ出来事を記録しているルカはこの時の食事についてイエス様の思いをこう記しています。イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしは苦しみを受ける前に、あなたがたとこの過越の食事をしようと、切に望んでいた（ルカ２２章１５節）。そうです、イエス様は弟子達とこの食事をもつことを心から願われていたのです。このようなイエス様の強い気持ちが記録されていることは珍しく、他には見当たりません。なぜでしょうか。
なぜなら、まさしくこの晩餐の席で、かつて多くの弟子達がイエス様を離れていった、その原因となった「血を飲む」とか「肉を食べる」という言葉が、実際に目に見えるかたちで弟子達の前に示されるからです。すなわちイエス・キリストはパンを手に取り、祝福して、それを割いて弟子達にお渡しになり、それを食べるにあたりこう言ったのです「「取って食べよ、これはわたしのからだである」と。そして、杯を取り、感謝して彼らに与えて言われたのです、「みな、この杯から飲め。28これは、罪のゆるしを得させるようにと、多くの人のために流すわたしの契約の血である』。
ダビンチの作品名は「最後の晩餐」となっておりますが、実際にイエス様がこの晩餐を弟子達と持たれた時というのは、過ぎ越しの祭の最中であり、そのような意味では、彼らのその時の食事は「過ぎ越しの食事」なのです。そうです、「過ぎ越し」とは、このイエスの時代よりさかのぼること１５００年昔、モーセに率いられたイスラエルの民がその家の鴨居に小羊の血を塗り、それが目印となり、そこにいる長子に死がおよぶことなく、過ぎこされたということを記念する、ユダヤ人にとって最も大切な祭のことで、イエス様はその食事の席でパンを割き、ブドウ酒を弟子達に分け与えたのです。
私達が感謝祭に七面鳥を食べるように、ユダヤ人にもその晩、過ぎ越しの食事とされている伝統的な食事があったのです。しかし、そのところで弟子達にイエス様が与えたものは、その数時間後に実際に十字架にはりつけにされて、割かれるイエス様ご自身のからだなるパンであり、その十字架上で流される御血をブドウ酒として弟子達に分け与えたのです。
そして、イエス様はこの食事をこの時一回限りにするのではなく『わたしの記念としてこのように行いなさい』と（ルカ２２章１９節）、それはいつまでもあなたたちの間でなされるべきものだと弟子達に示されたのです。そして、何を隠そう、そのキリストの言葉に従い、今日（きょう）、私達もこの後にこの主の晩餐にあずかろうとしているのです。
ここでお話しなければなりませんことは、この食事、私達は今日（こんにち）、それを聖餐と呼んでいますが、その聖餐にあずかるということが、どういうことなのかということです。私達が聖餐式を持つ時に、私はご理解していただけるようにという祈り心と共に、この聖餐にはクリスチャンである方だけがおあずかりくださいと申し上げています。このような言葉を言うことは、とても心苦しいことなのですが、このことについて私の情が優先されるべきではなく、その聖餐の意味に立たなければならないからです。それではその聖餐の意味は何なのか。それをさらに紐解く出来事がイエス様が弟子達と共に過ごし、主の晩餐をもった同じ部屋で同じ時になされていました。私達はその出来事に向き合わなければなりません。
先ほど、イエスと弟子達とのパンとブドウ酒の食事はマタイ、マルコ、ルカにだけ記されていると申し上げました。ということは、もう一つのヨハネによる福音書にはこの重要な出来事は記録されていないのです。しかし、その時、あのエルサレムの二階座敷でヨハネだけが記している出来事があるのです。何だかご存知ですか。こんな出来事です。
1過越の祭の前に、イエスは、この世を去って父のみもとに行くべき自分の時がきたことを知り、世にいる自分の者たちを愛して、彼らを最後まで愛し通された。2夕食のとき、悪魔はすでにシモンの子イスカリオテのユダの心に、イエスを裏切ろうとする思いを入れていたが、3イエスは、父がすべてのものを自分の手にお与えになったこと、また、自分は神から出てきて、神にかえろうとしていることを思い、4夕食の席から立ち上がって、上着を脱ぎ、手ぬぐいをとって腰に巻き、5それから水をたらいに入れて、弟子たちの足を洗い、腰に巻いた手ぬぐいでふき始められた。6こうして、シモン・ペテロの番になった。すると彼はイエスに、「主よ、あなたがわたしの足をお洗いになるのですか」と言った。7イエスは彼に答えて言われた、「わたしのしていることは今あなたにはわからないが、あとでわかるようになるだろう」。8ペテロはイエスに言った、「わたしの足を決して洗わないで下さい」。イエスは彼に答えられた、「もしわたしがあなたの足を洗わないなら、あなたはわたしとなんの係わりもなくなる」。（ヨハネ１３章１節ー８節）。
俗にこのことを私達は洗足（足を洗う）の出来事と言います。実にこの洗足がなされた直後にイエス様は先ほどの晩餐を弟子達とお取りなったのです。なぜ、ヨハネはブドウ酒とパンの記事を残さず、この洗足の記事を書いたのでしょうか。その理由はどこにも書かれていないので推測しかできませんが、福音書の中でマルコによる福音書が一番先に書かれたと言われていますから、ヨハネはきっとマルコが確かにこのパンとブドウ酒の記事を書いているということを見届けて、御霊に導かれて、あえてそれに触れずに、この洗足の記事を書いたのではないかと思われます。
それにしてもイエス様が弟子達の足を洗われたということは、およそ考えられないことでした。当時、人の足を洗うのは奴隷の仕事であり、この場合は師であるイエス様が弟子達の足を一人一人、洗われたのですから。
私は小学生がの頃、本当によく遊びました。そのことにおいて悔いはありません。学校が終わると夕飯まで、もっと言いますと暗くなって遊べなくなるまで、いやもっと言いますと暗くなってからも野球ボールに暗くても光る蛍光塗料を塗って遊びました。そんな充実した時間を過ごし帰宅しますと、母はいつも「お風呂場直行！」と叫びました。私の姿は頭の先からつま先まで汚れていたからです。しかし、風呂に行けば行ったで、私にとって風呂は湯船につかる場所で、そこは体を洗う場所ではありませんでした。
日本の夏は蒸し暑く、私は一日中、川や野山で遊びまわりました。当然、夏はサンダルです。汗をかきます。そうなると私達の足はどんな状態になるかご存知ですか。そうです、サンダルのヒモの部分は白く、他は真黒になるのです。でも、それは陽に焼けて黒いということだけではなく、一日、遊びまわったその先々でついた埃が汗によって吸収され、足に付着している黒さなのです。まさしく、その様は汗と埃の合作と呼ばれるようなものでした。しかし、私は風呂に入っても湯を体にかけ、湯につかるだけで出てきますから、その足の汚れはそのままそこに残りました（ちなみに、現在はそんなことはしていません）。
イエス様が洗われた弟子達の足はまさしくそのようなこびりついた汚れがついた足なのです。当時は当然、ナイキやアディダスという靴はなく、皆、サンダルで歩いていました。しかも、舗装道路もないような埃が舞うような道を彼らは歩いていたのですから、その汚れたるやひどいものだったと思われます。
イエス様はその弟子達の前にひざまづいて、私がしたようにシャッシャッと水をかけたのではなく、イエス様は「4上着を脱ぎ、手ぬぐいをとって腰に巻き、5それから水をたらいに入れて、弟子たちの足を洗い、腰に巻いた手ぬぐいでふき始められた」というのです。上着を脱ぎ、手ぬぐいを腰に巻くということは、その洗足が中途半場なものではないということを表しています。イエス様はちょっと水を汲んで来てくれとも言わず、自ら水をたらいに入れ、弟子達の足を洗い、腰に巻いた手ぬぐいでその足を洗われたのです。言うまでもなく、このようなことを１２人の男たちの足にしたということは、体から汗が噴き出るようなことであったことでしょう。そして、このような時になると決まって、何かを言い出す弟子が彼らの中にはいました。彼、すなわちペテロは弟子達の足を洗い、いよいよ自分の足を洗おうとするイエス様に向かって言ったのです。
「主よ、あなたがわたしの足をお洗いになるのですか」（６）。それに対してイエスは彼に答えて言われました「わたしのしていることは今あなたにはわからないが、あとでわかるようになるだろう」（７）。単純なペテロは咄嗟に言いました。「わたしの足を決して洗わないで下さい」（８）。イエスは彼に答えて言われました「もしわたしがあなたの足を洗わないなら、あなたはわたしとなんの係わりもなくなる」（８）
このところがよく誤解されてしまうことです。「イエス・キリストと私達の関係」は、私達がキリストのためにどれだけ良いことをしたのかとか、きよい生活を送っているとか、どれだけイエスについて学んでいるかということではありません。これまで何度、「牧師さん、少しはましな人になったら教会に来たいと思います」という言葉を聞いたことでしょうか。それは言い方を変えれば「足が汚れるような生き方をしなくなったら、そして自分で足を洗ってから教会に来ます」ということで、そんな言葉を聞くたびに私は心の中で思います「おそらく、わたしはあなたに再び、会うことはないでしょう」と。
なぜですか。なぜならイエス様はそんなことを私達には望まれていないからです。イエス様は「わたしの足を洗わないでください」と言われたペテロに「それでは私とあなたとは何のかかわりもなくなると言われたのです」。そうです、イエス・キリストと私達との関係はどこにあるかと言いますと、私達が自分の足は汚れているという動かしがたい事実を認め、それをイエス様に洗っていただくために、その足をイエス様の前に差し出すということです。「足を洗う」とは何か法律にひっかかることをしている人達が回心して出直すという、そんな彼らだけの言葉ではないのです。あなたにもキリストに洗っていただかなければならないものがあるだろうというのが聖書のメッセージなのです。しかも、それはシャッシャッと水をかければ落ちるというようなものではないだろう、それはまさしくこびりついているものだろう、私とあなたの関係は、私がそのあなたの汚れを心を込めて、洗うことによってのみ成り立つのだとキリストは言うのす。
このイエス様との関係が分かってきますと、私達は雲が晴れたかのように聖書に記されているイエス・キリストの言動がよく分かってきます。なぜ、群衆がイエスを自分達の王にしようとした時、そこから距離を置かれたのか、なぜ、人々はイエスを「奴こそ罪人の友だ」と後ろ指を指されることを黙認されたのか、なぜなら、イエス・キリストはこの世の王となるべくこの地に来られたのではなく、自らの足の汚れを知る者達の足を洗うために、その関係を私達と結ぶためにこの地に来られたからです。
皆さん、この時のイエス様とペテロとの会話の中でイエス様はペテロに言われましたね『わたしのしていることは今あなたにはわからないが、あとでわかるようになるだろう』（７）。イエス様はこの言葉に何を託したのでしょうか。イエス様が弟子達の前に跪いて彼らの汚い足を洗ったということにより、後になって分かることとは何なのでしょうか。
ペテロはこの晩餐の席でイエス様に言いました「主よ、わたしは獄にでも、また死に至るまでも、あなたとご一緒に行く覚悟です」（ルカ２２章３３節）。この言葉を言った時、彼の心には義勇心が満ちていたことでしょう。しかし、そんなこと言わなければよかったのです。なぜなら、ペテロはその言葉を言った直後に自らの保身のために三度、「私はイエスを知らない」と言い、逃げていくのです。「死に至るまでも！」なんて言葉はとんでもないことで、「ご一緒に！」などとは嘘っぱちで、ペテロが逃げ隠れている間に、イエス様は十字架に架けられて息を引き取るのです。
ペテロがイエス様を裏切ったことは、明らかです。弁解の余地はありません。その事実を突き付けられたペテロが思う思いは一つ。「あぁ、俺はいったい何という男なのか！」
後、彼がいつイエス様が言われた「わたしのしていることは後になって分かる」ということが分かったのか、私達は知りえません。しかし、彼の人生の中で、イエス様が自分の足に触れてくださったぬくもりはいつまでもその心に残り、また、あの晩餐の席で「これはわたしのからだである」、「これは罪の赦しを得させるために多くの人のために流すわたしの血だ」と言われたイエス様のお顔とその言葉をその心から拭い去ることはできなかったことでしょう。そして、ある日、気がついたことでしょう。主よ、あなたはこんな男のために、十字架にかかってくださり、私の心の汚れを全てぬぐいさってくださったのですねと。キリストとその関係を結んだペテロは、後、そのキリストの無条件の愛に突き動かされ、まさしく彼がかつて言ったように「死に至るまで」キリストに従い生きるのです。
主にある皆さん、私達もこれからこの主の晩餐をいただきます。お話しましたように、このことは己が汚れを知り、その汚れをキリストの十字架の血潮によって洗っていただいた者が、これを記念して行いなさいと言われたお方の言葉を守り、いただくものです。私達は一人、キリストの十字架の前に立つ者として、感謝してそれをいただきましょう。
言うまでもなく、この十字架の愛はそれを受けさせていただく者達が優れているからいただけるものでは全くなく、あの晩餐の席で自ら立ち上がって、たらいに水を汲んで、私達の前に跪いてくださったお方の一方的なあわれみによります。私達はただ自分の汚い足を主の前に洗っていただいた者にすぎないのです。
先週、お話しましたように、私達を突き動かすものは色々あります。時にそれは恐れであったり、罪悪感であったり、持ち物であったり、人の目であったりします。しかし、それらは決して私達をさいわいな道へと導くことはありません。私達を本当に突き動かす力、それはキリストの私達に対するこの愛です。恵みです。私達はそのご愛をいただき、ここから立ち上がってまいりましょう。
そして、私達は皆、かつてはこの愛を知らずに生きていた者です。もし、皆さんの中に、自分もこのイエス・キリストとの関係を築いて、その人生を歩みたいという方がおりましたら、この新しい年、そのことが成就しますようにと心よりお祈りしています。お祈りしましょう。

How have your End of Year and New Year been? Christmas and New Year celebrations are over, and it is back to our daily routines. So, let us also return to our annual theme of “knowing Christ” series. Starting today, let’s continue to read through the Gospel of John. Today, I would like to read John, Chapter 6 verses 53 to 63 first
Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever.(John 6:53-63)
Jesus said to “drink his blood and eat his flesh” here. Here is the reason why the Bible must be understood by reading the whole. If someone who reads the Bible for the first time opens up this page incidentally, he or she will certainly misunderstand that there is a teaching of cannibalism in Christianity. Needless to say, Jesus, of course, did not say such a thing here.
However, after this passage, the Bible recorded as follows: On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” (John 6:60) And, From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. (John 6:66)
Until that time, they followed Jesus because they had heard the word of Jesus that was full of hope and comfort like they had never heard before, and had also witnessed a number of amazing deeds. But, on that day, they took the word of Jesus as being terrible, and went away.
We may say “Please don’t look at me, but look at God.” Here this is to mean, “Please do not trip over by looking at me who is incomplete, but look at only God.” But, the disciples of Jesus stumbled on Jesus by looking at him. Because in their mind, they already had their own thoughts and wishes, that did not match the words and deeds of Jesus on that day. For the disciples who left Jesus on that day, the word of Jesus was unexpected, and also was out of reach for them to understand. That is why they left Jesus. Someone may say, “Please don’t look at me, but look at Jesus”, but people stumble even on Jesus. We must be firmly reminded that it is human nature.
At that time, none of the 12 disciples left Jesus, but even for the 12 disciples, they actually needed a long time to really understand the meaning of what “drinking blood” and “eating meat” meant.
That’s right, later the 12 disciples literally witnessed what Jesus said at that time. The event took place several hours before Jesus was crucified. The stage was the upper room where Jesus and his 12 disciples had so called “The Last Supper” which was later drawn in the famous picture by Leonard da Vinci. This was a very important event in the life of Jesus Christ, so that Matthew, Mark, and Luke recorded this event in the Bible. (Matthew 26:17-30, Mark 14:12-26, Luke 22:7-23).
When they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:26-28)
Luke who recorded the same event wrote the thought of Jesus at the time of supper as follows: And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” (Luke 22:15) That’s right. Jesus really wished to have the supper with his disciples. It is unusual to find such a strong wish of Jesus in the scripture. In fact, no other is recorded in the Bible. Why?
It is because during this supper, the words of Jesus; “eating meat” and “drinking blood” that once caused many disciples to leave Jesus, were visibly shown in front of the disciples. That is, Jesus Christ took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Also, he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
The title of Da Vinci’s picture is “The Last Supper”, but actually the day when Jesus took this supper with the disciples, was in the midst of the Passover festival, so, in that sense, it should be called “The Passover Supper”. The “Passover” was the event that took place about 1500 years before the time of Christ in Egypt where the people of Israel led by Moses painted the blood of lambs on lintels of their houses, so that the death angel passed over the houses with the marks, thus avoiding death to the firstborns in the households. The “Passover” was the most important festival for the Jews. Jesus broke the bread and imparted the wine to his disciples in this “Passover Supper”.
As we eat turkey on Thanksgiving, there also was the traditional Passover meal for the Jews on that evening. But, what Jesus gave his disciples were the broken breads that symbolized his body to be crucified on the cross, several hours after the supper, and the wine that symbolized his blood to be shed on the cross.
And Jesus instructed his disciples to have this meal repeatedly among them as his memorial, as Luke recorded as the word of Jesus: “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19) Following the word of Jesus, we are going to have the Sacrament after this message today.
Here, we call this ceremonial meal “Sacrament” nowadays, but I must talk to you one thing, that is the meaning of participating in Sacrament. Whenever we have Sacrament, I ask the congregation that only the baptized Christians will participate in Sacrament, with the prayer that everybody understands the situation. It is very painful for me to say such words, but it must stand on the meaning of Sacrament rather than my emotion as a priority. Then, what is the meaning of Sacrament? The event that was a key to the answer to the question took place at the same time in the same room where the Lord’s Supper was held. Now, let’s look at the event.
Earlier, I told you that only Mathew, Mark, and Luke recorded the Lord’s Supper with Jesus and his disciples sharing the bread and the wine. This means that John did not record this important event in his Gospel. However, at that time, in the upper room in Jerusalem, another event took place which was recorded only by John. Do you know what is it? John recorded this event as follows.
It was just before the Passover Feast, Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciple’s feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No”, said Peter, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” (John 13:1-8)
We call the event “Maundy” (washing the feet). Indeed, Jesus had the Lords’ Supper with his disciples immediately after this Maundy. Why then, John did not record the event of the bread and wine and wrote the article on this Maundy? The reason for this is not written anywhere, so, we only have to guess it. But, it is said that the Gospel of Mark was written first among the four Gospels, and John knew that Mark had recorded the event of the bread and wine already, so John would have intentionally avoided writing it. And he wrote about the Maundy, being led by the Holy Spirit.
Anyway, the fact that Jesus washed the feet of disciples was unthinkable. At that time, washing a man’s foot is a work of slaves. Yet, Jesus as their Lord washed the feet of his disciples one by one.
When I was an elementary school boy, I played really well. I don’t regret that at all. After the school was over, before dinner, I played and played until it became too dark to play. Even after that, I played baseball with a ball painted with fluorescent paint that shines even in darkness. When I returned home after spending such a fulfilling time, my mother always shouted, “Go to the bathroom directly!”, because I was so dirty from the head to the toe. But, for me, the bathroom was not the place to wash my body, but to soak myself in the bathtub.
Summer in Japan is hot and humid. I was playing around rivers and hills all day. Of course, I wore sandals in summer time. I was always sweating. Then, do you know what happened to my feet? That’s right, the part of the sandal straps remained white, but the other parts became black. But, it was not only darkened by the sunlight, but by the dust absorbed by the sweat. The dust was collected wherever I played all day. Indeed, it was a product of collaboration between sweat and dust. And, I did not wash my body, but soaked myself in the bathtub, my feet remained dirty. (By the way, I don’t do that now.)
Indeed, Jesus washed the disciple’s feet that were so dirty like I just mentioned. Of course, at that time, there were no shoes like Nike and Adidas. Everyone was walking in sandals. Moreover, there was no paved road around, and they were walking on the dirt roads with floating dust. Therefore, the dirtiness of their feet must have been so terrible.
Jesus kneeled down in front of his disciples, and started washing their feet. He did not just pour water on their feet, just like I used to do, but as it is recorded in John 13:4-5 as “He took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciple’s feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” The scene of taking off his jacket, and wrapping a towel around his waist shows the seriousness of his act. Jesus did not ask anyone to bring water, but he poured water into a basin by himself, and washed his disciple’s feet and dried them with the towel wrapped around his waist. Needless to say, washing the feet of 12 men was a big job. So, Jesus must have perspired a lot. In such time, as usual, one of the disciples spoke out. It was Simon Peter, and when it was his turn to be washed, he said to Jesus as follows:
“Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” The simple Peter responded instantly. “No”, said Peter, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” (John 13:6-8)
Here is the part that is misunderstood by many. “Our relationship with Jesus Christ” has nothing to do with how much good we have done for Christ, or that we live a holy life, or how much we have learned about Jesus. So far, I wonder how many times I have heard people say, “Pastor, I would like to come to the church after I become a little bit better person.” Being stated differently, it is like, “If I no longer live a way of life that makes my feet dirty, then I will come to the church, after washing my feet by myself.” Every time I hear such words, I think in my mind, “Perhaps, I shall never see this person again.”
Why is that? Because Jesus does not want us to be that way. When Peter said to Jesus, “You shall never wash my feet”, Jesus replied to Peter, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” That’s it. Here we find the relationship between Jesus and us. That is to say, we acknowledged the undeniable fact that our feet are dirty, and submit our feet in front of Jesus to be washed. “Washing feet” is a special word that has been used among those who have done something unlawful, and it means to repent and live a new life. The message of the Bible is that you might also have something in you to be washed by Christ. What’s more, it would not be something that can be easily cleaned by pouring water, but the dirt is firmly stuck to your feet. Jesus says, “The relationship between you and I will be established only by washing your dirty feet wholeheartedly”.
When we understand this relationship between Jesus and us, we can clearly understand the words and deeds of Jesus Christ that are written in the Bible, as if a fog is lifted. For example, why Jesus distanced Himself from the crowd when they tried to make Him their king? Why Jesus let the people accuse him saying, “He is the friend of sinners”? Because, Jesus Christ did not come to this world to be a king, but to establish a relationship between Him and us by washing the feet of those who know their feet are dirty.
Brothers and sisters, please note that Jesus said in the conversation with Peter, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” (John 13:7) What was the intention of Jesus in this verse? What would be later understood about Jesus kneeling down in front of his disciples, and washing their feet?
During the Lord’s Supper, Peter said to Jesus as follows: “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” (Luke 22:33) When Peter said this, his heart would be full of loyalty for Jesus, but he should not have said such a thing. Because, soon after he said this, Peter betrayed Jesus saying, “I do not know Jesus” three times for his self-protection and ran away from the scene. His word of “I am ready to go with you to death” was an outrageous lie. While Peter was gone and hiding, Jesus passed away on the cross.
It is obvious that Peter betrayed Jesus. No excuse for that. When Peter was confronted with this fact, the only thing that came to his mind must be “Oh, what kind of a man am I?!”
After that, we don’t know when Peter understood the meaning of the word of Jesus; “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” (John 13:7) However, throughout his life, Peter must have remembered the warmth of Jesus’ hands that touched his feet, when Jesus washed his feet. Also, Peter could not wipe out Jesus’ face and words from his heart, when Jesus said, “This is my body.” and “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” at the Lord’s Supper. And, one day, indeed he realized that Jesus went to the cross for such a man to wipe out all his sins. After realizing the relationship with Jesus, being moved by His unconditional love, Peter indeed followed Jesus to his death, as he once said to Jesus.
Everyone in the Lord, we are going to have the Lord’s Supper now. As I told you, this will be done to keep the words of Christ who instructed his disciples: “Do this in remembrance of me.” Those who knew of their dirtiness, and have their sins washed by the blood of Christ on the cross, may participate in this Sacrament. Let us partake it with thanks giving as we stand one by one before the cross.
Needless to say, this love of Christ on the cross is given to us absolutely not because we are excellent, but it is given only by the unilateral mercy of the One who stood up from the supper, poured water into the basin, kneeled down in front of his disciples, and washed their feet. We are just those who have submitted our dirty feet before the Lord to be washed.
As I told you last week, there are various things that drive us. Sometimes it is a fear, or a sense of guilt, or a material, or a human eye. But, they will never lead us into happiness. The force that really drives us is the love of Christ for us, and His grace. Let’s stand up from here with His love. Many of us were once living without knowing His love.
