白内障の手術を受けてクリアーなビジョンが与えられた方達が口々に言いますことは、目がよく見えるようになってこんなに家が汚れていたのか分かりましたということです。それまで見えなかった埃が見えたというのです。同じようにそれまで光が照らされていないそのところに光が照らされましたらそこにある汚れが見えるのです。真っ暗な屋根裏に行き、そこで懐中電灯をつけますと、宙に浮いている埃が全て光に照らされます。その埃はいつもそこにあるのです。ただ光がないから見えないだけです。「私は世の光です」と言われたイエスに近づいた時に明らかなことは、自分の罪が見えるということです。これは私達がイエスに近づいているという証拠です。

絶対絶命、しかり・・・
ヨハネ８章１節－１１節
1イエスはオリブ山に行かれた。2朝早くまた宮にはいられると、人々が皆みもとに集まってきたので、イエスはすわって彼らを教えておられた。3すると、律法学者たちやパリサイ人たちが、姦淫をしている時につかまえられた女をひっぱってきて、中に立たせた上、イエスに言った、4「先生、この女は姦淫の場でつかまえられました。5モーセは律法の中で、こういう女を石で打ち殺せと命じましたが、あなたはどう思いますか」。6彼らがそう言ったのは、イエスをためして、訴える口実を得るためであった。しかし、イエスは身をかがめて、指で地面に何か書いておられた。7彼らが問い続けるので、イエスは身を起して彼らに言われた、「あなたがたの中で罪のない者が、まずこの女に石を投げつけるがよい」。8そしてまた身をかがめて、地面に物を書きつづけられた。9これを聞くと、彼らは年寄から始めて、ひとりびとり出て行き、ついに、イエスだけになり、女は中にいたまま残された。10そこでイエスは身を起して女に言われた、「女よ、みんなはどこにいるか。あなたを罰する者はなかったのか」。11女は言った、「主よ、だれもございません」。イエスは言われた、「わたしもあなたを罰しない。お帰りなさい。今後はもう罪を犯さないように」（ヨハネ８章１節－１１節）。
二週間前にイエス様は既に同胞ユダヤ人から命を狙われていたということをお話しました。そのユダヤ人の中で特にイエス様への憎悪を強くもっていたのは、律法学者、そしてパリサイ人と呼ばれる宗教家達で、彼らはこの箇所においてもイエス様を訴える口実をもってやってきたのです。
その時、イエス様はオリブ山の宮で教えておられました。その宮に入られると人々がイエス様のもとに集まって来たというですから、イエス様のことは既に多くの人達に知られ、また慕われていたのでしょう。その所で律法学者、パリサイ人はイエス様の前に姦淫をしている時に捕まえた女を差し出し、こう言ったのです『先生、この女は姦淫の場で捕まえられました。モーセは律法の中で、こういう女を石で撃ち殺せと命じましたが、あなたはどう思いますか』（４，５）
言うまでもなく、この質問はイエスを追い詰める悪意で満ちた問いかけでした。「追い詰める」と言いますのは、この質問に対して「そうだ、確かに律法はそう言っている。石を投げてこの女を打ち殺せばよかろう」と言えば、それは律法学者やパリサイ人の考えと同じですので、イエスは何の害も受けません。しかし、それは普段から神の愛と恵みを語っていたイエス様の言葉と生き様に反することであり、その事ゆえにイエス様を慕ってきた者達は皆、イエスから離れていくことでしょう。
反対に「いや、確かに律法はそう書いているが、神は愛と憐れみに富んでいるお方であるから、石を投げてはいけない。女を自由にしてあげなさい」と言えば、「あなたは律法に反して生きており、それを言い広めている」とイエス様は彼らが願うように訴えられたことでしょう。
このように綿密にたてられたこの策略と共に、いよいよ目障りとなっているイエス様を亡き者にすることができるという期待をもって彼らはそこにやって来たに違いありません。きっと何の騒ぎかと野次馬もそこには大勢、集まってきたことでしょう。辺りは騒然としていたことでしょう。しかし、イエス様は地面から目を離さず、何かを書き続けています。
女はどんな姿でそこに突き出されていたのでしょうか。もしかしたら姦淫の時に捕まえられた時とほぼ同じ格好で、多くの人達の好奇の視線の中にさらされていたのかもしれませんん。彼女はどんな思いでそこにいたのでしょうか。羞恥心と恐怖で彼女は震えていたかもしれません。
イエス様はその時に地面に何を書いていたのでしょうか。地面に書いているのですから、終始、その顔は下を向いていました。視線を女に向ける、もしかしたら、そのことだけで恐怖と苦痛を彼女は感じるかもしれない、そんな彼女に対するイエス様の愛の配慮だったのかもしれません。
神様はイスラエル民族を選び、彼らとの関わりを通して、その歴史を築かれました。天と地が創造され、人がこの地に造られ、人が増えるにあたり、その初めには政府も法律もありませんでした。言うなれば彼らにはルールというものがありませんでした。しかし、その彼らに神は律法を与えました。それは人間というものが互いに生きていくために絶対不可欠なものでした。この律法は彼らの行動を制限するものでありましたが、別の観方をすればそれらは彼らを保護するものでした。この女性がしていたことは明らかにこの律法に反するものでした。パリサイ人や律法学者は自分達の都合のいいことを言っているのではありません。確かに彼らが言っているとおり、神様はモーセを通してこのような律法をイスラエルに与えておられたのです。
『22もし夫のある女と寝ている男を見つけたならば、その女と寝た男およびその女を一緒に殺し、こうしてイスラエルのうちから悪を除き去らなければならない。23もし処女である女が、人と婚約した後、他の男が町の内でその女に会い、これを犯したならば、24あなたがたはそのふたりを町の門にひき出して、石で撃ち殺さなければならない。これはその女が町の内におりながら叫ばなかったからであり、またその男は隣人の妻をはずかしめたからである。あなたはこうしてあなたがたのうちから悪を除き去らなければならない』（申命記２２章２２節、２３節）。
この律法にのっとれば、この女がしたことは確かに石打ちの刑に値するのです。その現場を捕えられたというのですから、弁解の余地はありません。そのような意味では彼女は絶対絶命なのです。このことだけははっきりとしなければなりません。聖書は私達がしてしまったことに対して、こう書き記しています。『まちがってはいけない、神は侮られるようなかたではない。人は自分のまいたものを、刈り取ることになる』（ガラテヤ６章７節、８節）そうです、私達は自分がまいたもの、それが何であれ、それを私達は確実に刈り取らなければならない。このことに関しては誰も見ていなかったから、大丈夫だろうと神を侮るなというのです。ですから、この女も自分が蒔いたものを刈り取らなければならないということははっきりしているのです。
さぁ、イエス様はこの状況に対して何をされるのでしょうか。イエス様はずっとこの間、地面に何かを書き続けていたのですが、人々が問い続けるので顔を上げて一言だけ言いました。「あなたがたの中で罪のない者が、まずこの女に石を投げつけるがよい」。そう言ってイエス様は再び、地面に書き続けました。
この一言が彼らの間で語られた時、その時のことをヨハネは記していませんが、その瞬間、騒然としていたその場所は一気に静まったのではないかと思います。まさしく興奮していた者達の頭に冷や水がかけられたような瞬間でしょう。
イエス様は「あなたがたの中で罪のない者が」と言われたのです。「あなたがたの中で姦淫を犯したことがない者が」とイエス様は言われませんでした。そうです、人の法律ではその罪にもランクがあり、それによって刑罰が異なりますが、神の前に罪の大小はないのです。
主の祈りの中にこんな言葉があります『我らに罪をおかす者を、我らがゆるすごとく、我らの罪をもゆるしたまえ』。英語ではこれを『And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us』と書かれています。そうです、そこには罪という言葉を「Trespass」と書いております Trespassとは「侵入する」という意味です。
この言葉は色々なところで見かけます。もし、このようなサインが牧場に掲げられているのなら、そこに入ることはできません。その土地の所有者が自分の土地を全て垣根で囲んでいたとしますと、その垣根をダンブカーで壊して侵入することも、その中を徒歩で入ることも、どちらもこのサインを破っていることになるのです。罪を犯すとは神が定めている一線を超えてはならないということで、姦淫をすることも、一ドルを盗むこともそれは神の前に等しい罪なのです。
律法学者、パリサイ人、彼らは律法の専門家ですから、彼らもさすがにこのことを理解していました。ですから、年寄りから始め、そこから出て行ったのです。さすがの律法学者やパリサイ人も神の前に自分は何の罪も犯したことがないと主張することはできませんでした。
しかし、このところで私達が心に留めなければならないことは「罪無き者、まず石を投げよ」と言われたら誰も石を投げられなかった、ということは当然、起きたということではないということです。人の中には開き直って、「いや、俺は幼い時から厳格に律法を守ってきており、罪を犯したことはない」という者が一人や二人、いてもおかしくないのです。
しかし、実際にその時にそれは起きませんでした。なぜですか、それはイエス・キリストがこの一言を言われたからです。このことについてイエス様は議論をしませんでした。全ての言葉を聞き流しました。しかし、あの一言を言った時に人々は皆、罪なきイエス・キリストの前に引き出されたのです。そして、その時に彼らはもはや自分は罪がない、潔白だとは言いえなくなったのです。表向きに繕うこともできないほどに、イエスの光が彼らの心を照らしたのです。

数週間前にイエス様は弟子達の足を洗われたということをお話しましたね。生まれたばかりの子供の足がきれいなように、彼らの心もまだ無垢です。そう無垢とは垢がないということ。しかし、年をとればとるほど私達の足は汚れ、心に垢もたまるでしょう。「罪のない者が石を投げよ」と問われた時に、その現場にいた年寄り、すなわち人生を長く生きてきた者は自分の長い生涯で考えたこと、してきたこと、それらを思う時に自らの垢について多くの心あたりがすぐに思いうかんだのでしょう。長い人生の中で自分はどんな人間かということを一番よく知っている者からそこを出て行ったのです。
そして、最後にはそこにいた人々は全てその場を去りました。言い方を変えれば彼らはその場から逃げていったのです。「これは厄介なことになった」と思ったからです。それまで彼女を指さし、石を握りしめていた者達は、もはやそこに自分がいる余地はない、もしかしたら風向きが変わって自分の罪が指摘されてしまうかもしれない、故に彼らはその場を逃げ出したのです。女のみならず彼らの心さえもイエスの光に照らされてしまったのですから。
しかし、そこから逃げない者達がいました。一人はこの女、一人はイエス様です。先ほど読みましたでしょう「あなたがたの中で罪のない者が、まずこの女に石を投げつけるがよい」。8そしてまた身をかがめて、地面に物を書きつづけられた」（７，８）。ということは、この女もどさくさに紛れてそこから逃げることができたでしょう。イエス様は地面に目を向けることにより、彼女に逃げる自由とそこに留まる自由を与えたのです。そして、彼女はとどまったのです。いよいよ石の雨が降ってくるという時に言われたイエス様の一言が、そして、騒然としている中、悠然と地面に何かを書いているイエス様の姿が彼女をとらえたのです。彼女はイエス・キリストという光の中にとどまったのです。
今日も私達には二つのチョイスがあります。その自由が私達に与えらえています。このキリストの光から逃げるのか、逃げ続けるのか、それともこの光の只中に向かって歩き出すのか。
主にある皆さん、私の心からの祈りは私達がこの光に向かって歩みだすことです。実際にそこにある長年の垢を隠して、その上に色々なものを塗りたくったり、その上に高価なものをかぶせてみたり、もうそんなことはしなくてもいいでしょう。そんなことしてもそれは変わらずにそこにあり続けるのです。そしていつの日かそれは神の前にあらわにされると聖書は言います。ですから、ヤコブの言葉をもって皆さんにお勧めするのです『8神に近づきなさい。そうすれば、神はあなたがたに近づいて下さるであろう。罪人どもよ、手をきよめよ。二心の者どもよ、心を清くせよ。
9苦しめ、悲しめ、泣け。あなたがたの笑いを悲しみに、喜びを憂いに変えよ。10主のみまえにへりくだれ。そうすれば、主は、あなたがたを高くして下さるであろう』（ヤコブ４章７節－１０節）。かつて弟子達の前にイエス様は跪かれてその足を洗ってくださいました。弟子達がそうしていただいたように私達もイエス様にその垢まみれの足を差し出せばいいのです。
最後にイエス様はこの女に何と言われましたか。イエス様は言いました「わたしもあなたを罰しない。お帰りなさい。今後はもう罪を犯さないように」。ここで私達が心にとめなければならないことは、この時点で彼女の罪はまだ何も解決してはいないということです。その罪は神の前に裁かれるべきものであるという事実は何ら変わらずそこにあるのです。やはり彼女はいつの日か自分が蒔いたものを神の前に刈り取らなければならない日が来るのです。
この出来事で人々がイエス様に突きつけたことは神がもつそのご性質である「神の義」と「神の愛」でした。すなわち「神の義」とは神は絶対に正しいお方であるということで、ゆえに神は人の罪をそのまま放置はされないということで、「神の愛」とは文字通り、神は全き愛なるお方であるからその人の罪を全く赦して下さるということです。
そしてこの二つを考える時に分かることは、この「神の義」と「神の愛」は決して共にいることができないということです。事の正しさを明らかにして、そこに公正な裁きがなされる時に、そこに愛が介入することはできませんし、愛を全うする時に、裁きは免除されます。愛は赦し、包み込むものだからです。
現行犯で逮捕された人を裁く裁判官はその人のことを愛しているゆえに、その罪を無罪にすることはできません。それでは義は全うされないからです。神は義なるお方であるのに、その愛ゆえに全ての罪人を無罪放免にするのならその神は絶対的に正しい神ではありません。
同時に我が子を愛する親がその子がなすこと全て裁いているのであるのなら、その親子関係は破たんしてしまうことでしょう。一人の人間が成長するにあたり、そこにはその子の過ちや反抗を愛し、赦す親の無条件の愛があります。子を愛する親が子に対して裁判官になることはできないのです。
はたしてこの互いに決して寄り添うことができない「神の義」と「神の愛」は一つになることができるのでしょうか・・・。
一つだけその神の義と神の愛が同時に成就する方法があります。「わたしもあなたを罪に定めない」と言われたイエス様は、それ以前に「世の罪を取り除く神の小羊」（１：２９）と呼ばれていたお方でありました。すなわち、その場から逃げることなく、その場に女と共に残ったイエス様のお心には「大丈夫だ、わたしはこれからあなたのその罪を全て背負ってあなたの受けるべき裁きを受けるから、その私の身代わりゆえにあなたが裁かれることはない」という覚悟があったのです。
そうですイエス・キリストの十字架とは人類史において後にも先にも一度だけ、キリストが十字架において私達の罪の身代わりとなり、その裁きを全て御身に受けててくださったことにより神の義が全うされ、その身代わりの死は私達の罪を無罪放免にする無条件の愛となり、その十字架の上に神の義と愛が完全に全うされたのです。十字架は神の完全な正しさ、そして神の完全な愛を示すものなのです。
そのような意味で私達一人一人にもこの女と全く同じ言葉、「わたしもあなたを罰しない。お帰りなさい。今後はもう罪を犯さないように」が投げかけられているのす。絶体絶命の状況、しかしその罰を受けることなく、その場を立ち去ることをよしとされた彼女の心は全く私達の心です。私達のTRESSPASS、罪もこのキリストの十字架にあって全く赦されているからです。そして、このような愛と赦しを受けた者達はその時からその生き方が変わるのです。どういうことでしょうか。
「突き動かされる」ということを最近、何度も皆さんに申し上げていますが、そうです、その時から私達を突き動かすものが変わるのです。面子、罪責感、恐れという、それまでの私達を突き動かしていたものが、キリストの愛に置き換えられるのです。その時に私達の人生は全く異なったものとなります。そうです、私達はこのキリストの愛に突き動かされるのです。その時に私達の心には喜び、平安が満ちてきます。この礼拝一つを取り上げてみましても、グリーターやアッシャーをされる方々、賛美チームで賛美をされる方達、司会者、そして説教者がそれぞれの持ち場に着く時に、キリストの愛に応えてこのはたらきをさせていただいているのだという喜びで満ちるのです。順番が回って来たから仕方なくとか、あの人に頼まれてしまったから断れないからということは、神に仕えようとする者を突き動かす動機としては全く間違っているのです。
今でも昔のことを鮮明に覚えています。私がかつて属していた日本ホーリネス教団で毎年春に持たれていた教団年会の最終日、それはいつも宣教大会でした。その年は日比谷公会堂でその宣教大会がもたれていました。私はまだ小学生、その会堂の階段を上った一番上の席から私はその大会に出ていました。メッセンジャーがはるか下の講壇から御言葉を語りかけたのです。主はあなたのために命を捨ててくださった。このご愛に応える者はおりませんか。私はその説教はほとんど分かりませんでした。しかし、イエス様が私のために十字架におかかりくださったこと、それは私の罪の身代わりであったということを知った時、私は居てもたってもおれず、そこから立ち上がり、主の愛に応えて階下の恵みの座に向かって歩みだしたのです。
皆さんはいかがでしょうか、主イエス・キリストは私達の罪をその十字架の血潮により洗い清めてくださる、そのキリストの愛に応え、キリストの十字架の前に尽き進みませんか。そして、同時にその愛に突き動かされて私達に与えられているこの人生を歩んでいきませんか。お祈りしましょう。

Being in a desperate situation then—-
John 8:1-11
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”11 “No one, sir,” she said “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
Two weeks ago, I explained Jesus had been targeted by his fellow countrymen, Jewish people. Among all of the Jews, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees who were so called “religious people” hated Jesus the most. In the Bible verses we will study today, we will find those people approached Jesus to look for a good excuse to accuse him.
Jesus had been already well known and followed by many people by this time so people gathered around him when he entered the temple courts. Then the teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought the woman caught in adultery and said. ““Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”
Needless to say, it was a malicious question to trap Jesus. If Jesus agreed to stone this woman as the law says, he wouldn’t have any trouble with the teachers of the law and the Pharisees because it was what they were intending. However, if Jesus agreed with them, it would deny what Jesus taught and showed to people about God’s love and grace. And Jesus’ followers might have left him since Jesus didn’t practice what he always taught to them.
On the contrary, if Jesus had said, “According to the law, it is right to stone her. But you shouldn’t do it because God is full of love and mercy. Let the woman go”, Jesus would have been accused because what he would do was against the law and he would have given people the wrong idea. That was just what the religious people pursued.
The religious people must have come up with the detailed plan to trap him. They expected to find a reason to kill Jesus who had become an obstacle for them. At the temple courts, more people gathered together to find out what was going on. The crowd might have been getting very loud and agitated. But Jesus was looking down and kept writing something on the ground.
Can you imagine what the woman was like in the scene? She might have been standing in the middle of the crowd wearing the same clothes when she was caught in adultery. People must have looked at her with curious eyes. Can you imagine how she felt? She might have been trembling with shame and fear.
What was Jesus writing on the ground? He was looking down while writing on the ground. If Jesus had stared at the woman, she might have been afraid and felt hurt. Jesus may have chosen not look at her directly to consider to her feelings as the act of love.
God chose the Israelites to make the history through the relationship with them. First, the heaven and the earth were created, and then man was created. The number of people increased, but they didn’t have any government or the law at first. Then God gave them the law. It was indispensable for their lives. The law limited their ways of living. But in another point of view, it protected their lives. What this woman did was evidently against the law. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees were not wrong. God gave the law about adultery to the Israelites through Moses. It is said.
22 If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. 23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you. (Deuteronomy 22:22-24)
According to the law, it is clear that what she had done deserved death by stoning. She had no excuse because she was caught in the act of adultery. She was in a desperate situation. Now, I should make it clear what the Bible says about sins we have committed. It says, “7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. (Galatians 6:7) As it says, we have to reap whatever we sowed. It says that you shouldn’t despise God by thinking it was OK because nobody was watching. It is very clear that this woman had to reap whatever she had sowed.
Let’s see what Jesus was going to do in this situation? While the people kept asking for an answer, he was writing something on the ground, but finally he looked up them and said only one thing. “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” After that, he went back to writing on the ground.
John didn’t describe the scene at the moment Jesus opened his mouth. But I can guess that the loud crowd became silent in a split second. This must have been a moment as if the agitated people felt like they had had cold water poured over their heads.
Jesus said “one of you who is without sin”. He didn’t say “one of you who didn’t commit adultery”. Manmade laws give a rank to each sin, and punishments vary depending on a sin. However, there is no sin that is more serious or less serious before God. All sins are equal to God.
Remember the word of Lord’s Prayer. It says “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.” (In English, “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.”) The word “trespass” is used here as “sin”. It means intruding or invading.
We see the sign with “trespass” in many places. When we see “no trespassing” at a ranch, we can’t enter there. We will break the rule if we enter a land by either destroying the fence with a dump truck or just by walking in. Committing a sin means trespassing the line God draws. Seriousness of the sin of adultery and the sin of stealing just one dollar are equal to God.
The teachers of the law and the Pharisees understood what Jesus said because they were the law experts. So, they began to leave one by one starting from the oldest one. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees tried to challenge Jesus but couldn’t prove themselves they had never committed a sin before God.
Here, we need examining this incident carefully because it didn’t happen by accident. When Jesus said to the crowd “If anyone of without sins throw a stone”, no one did. It wouldn’t have been surprising if someone had thrown a stone at the woman because some of the people might have considered they have never done anything wrong in their lives.
But actually, it didn’t happen. Why didn’t it? It is because Jesus Christ himself said the word. He didn’t argue with the people. He didn’t pay attention to them. But when Jesus talked, they must have felt as if they had been brought to Jesus without sin. I would think they couldn’t consider themselves sinless or innocent anymore because the light of Jesus shone on these people’s hearts.
After a cataract surgery, a person’s vision improves and they now realize how dirty the house is. They are able to see dust they didn’t notice before. As it is, we can see dust in the darkness when the light is shining. When we go to a dark attic with a flashlight on, we can see dust particles floating in the air. Actually, dust is always there. But we can’t see it without light. It is clear that our sins are visible when we come close to Jesus who claimed he is light. Recognizing our sins is the evidence that we have come close to Jesus.
I talked about how Jesus washed the feet of the disciples several weeks ago. As a newborn baby’s feet are spotless, their hearts are also pure. Pure means that there is no dirt. As we age, our feet get dirtier. Our hearts also become less pure. When Jesus said to the people “The one who have no sin throw a stone”, older people must have remembered what they had done in the past and must have realized the dirt in their hearts. The one who knew better left first and others followed.
Finally, all of them went away. In other words, they ran away from there. They found it was not a good situation for them. People who were holding stones couldn’t find the reason to accuse her anymore. Instead, they thought they might be accused because of their own sins. Jesus’ light shone not only on the woman, but also on the people who surrounded the woman.
However, two people didn’t run away. One of them was the woman and the other was Jesus. Remember what Jesus said, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. It was possible for this woman to take advantage of the confusion to escape. Jesus gave her a choice either to stay or run away while he was looking down on the ground. She chose to stay there. I can imagine the word of Jesus hit her heart at that moment when she was about to be stoned. Jesus’ calm attitude while writing something on the ground despite the agitated situation probably caught her attention. She stayed in the light which was Jesus Christ.
Today, we also have two choices. We have freedom to choose one of them. One of them is running away from the light of Christ. The other is to walk towards the light.
Sisters and brothers in Christ, my prayer from the bottom of my heart is all of us walk towards the light. We don’t need to hide or cover the dirty spot in our hearts any more. Dirty spots represent sins. They will be there no matter how we try to hide them. The Bible tells the truth will uncover everything before God someday. So I recommend reading the verses from James in the Bible. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. (James 4:8-10) Jesus once fell on his knees before the disciples to wash their feet. What we need is just giving our dirty feet to Jesus as the disciples did.
What did Jesus say to this woman at last? He said, “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” We need to know her sins were not cleaned at that point yet. There is the fact her sins should be judged before God. Someday, she would need to reap what she had sowed.
What the religious people brought up to Jesus here was about God’s righteousness and God’s love. They were both God’s character. God’s righteousness means God is perfectly right so that He can’t ignore sins. God’s love means He is the love that forgives our sins completely.
Thinking about God’s character, we understand God’s righteousness and love can’t stay together. When God uncovers everything to make the right judgment, there is no room for love. On the other hand, when love is complete, the judgment is exempted because love forgives and covers a multitude of sins.
Imagine a judge who tries the case of a criminal caught at a crime scene. The judge can’t find him innocent even though he has compassion for this criminal. If he does, it will be against righteousness. God is righteous. If God forgives all sinners because of His love, He is not a righteous God anymore.
If parents judge everything that their children did, the relationship between parents and children would be broken. Parents have unconditional love for their children. They love and forgive children’s mistakes and rebellions while they are growing up. Parents who love children can’t become judges for them.
Then if God’s righteousness and God’s love can’t exist together, is it possible for both to become one?
There is only one way to complete God’s righteousness and God’s love at the same time. Jesus who said, “Then neither do I condemn you,” was also called “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) When Jesus stayed with the woman who didn’t leave the courtyard, Jesus determined that he would carry all the woman’s sins and would receive the judgment she deserved so that she wouldn’t be judged.
The crucifixion of Jesus Christ was done once in our history. Jesus sacrificed himself for us on the cross and received all punishment we deserve from God. In this way, he completed God’s righteousness. His death allows us to be innocent. It shows God’s unconditional love for us. God’s righteousness and God’s love was completed on the cross. The cross is the sign of God’s perfect righteousness and perfect love.
Jesus also tells us the same word that he gave to this woman “Then neither do I condemn you,” She once was in a desperate situation but was allowed to leave without the punishment. This also applies to us. Our trespass or sins are also forgiven completely on Christ’s cross. All who received such love and forgiveness from God will change their ways to live from that moment. What does it mean?
Lately, I have talked many times about something that motivates us. At the moment we are forgiven, our motivation is changed. We used to do something because of our honor, our guilt or fear. But it is replaced with Jesus’ love. Our life becomes totally different from the past at that moment. We are motivated with Christ’s love. Our hearts are filled with joy and peace. Think about this worship service. Greeters, ushers, people singing in the worship team, a chairperson and a messenger are full of joy doing their jobs through Christ’s love. Some people may work reluctantly when their turns come, or they feel they have to work because they can’t turn down the request. It is totally wrong for God’s followers to be motivated by those reasons.
I still remember very clearly the event I attended. Japan holiness I once belonged to has an annual meeting every spring. And the last day is usually the mission rally. It was held at Hibiya civic auditorium in Tokyo. I was an elementary school student and was sitting on the seat on the top of the auditorium. The messenger gave the message from the bottom of the building. He said, “The Lord gave up his life for us. Is there anyone who wants to answer his love?” I hardly understood his message at that time. But when I understood that Jesus died on the cross for me, and it was for my sins, I was touched so much that I stood up from my seat to go down towards the messenger by answering the Lord’s love.
What about you? Brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ washes our sins with his blood on the cross. Why don’t you come to Christ’s cross to receive his love? And then let’s walk our life motivated by his love. Let’s pray.
