羊飼いの心２０１５年３月１日
ヨハネ１０章１節－１５節
私が住む近所ではよく犬を散歩している人達の姿を見かけます。公園に行っても、ビーチに行っても、山に行っても、そんな光景を見かけます。人間は本当に犬が好きなんだなと思います。しかし、犬以外の動物、例えばダチョウとか象と散歩している人を見かけることはありません。同じように私はこれまでに一度も羊と散歩をしている人を見たことがありません。この国では羊はどこにでもいる動物ではなく、それは動物園や郊外の牧草地だけで見ることができる動物です。しかし、聖書においてはこの羊は他の諸々の動物よりも圧倒的に多く登場する動物で、聖書には羊という言葉が実に７００回以上も出てきます。
その一つにかつてイスラエルの王であったダビデが部下の妻と関係を持つという罪を犯した時、彼の側近、ナタンはダビデに向かってこんな羊の譬え話をしました。
1主はナタンをダビデにつかわされたので、彼はダビデの所にきて言った、「ある町にふたりの人があって、ひとりは富み、ひとりは貧しかった。2富んでいる人は非常に多くの羊と牛を持っていたが、3貧しい人は自分が買った一頭の小さい雌の小羊のほかは何も持っていなかった。彼がそれを育てたので、その小羊は彼および彼の子供たちと共に成長し、彼の食物を食べ、彼のわんから飲み、彼のふところで寝て、彼にとっては娘のようであった。時に、ひとりの旅びとが、その富んでいる人のもとにきたが、自分の羊または牛のうちから一頭を取って、自分の所にきた旅びとのために調理することを惜しみ、その貧しい人の小羊を取って、これを自分の所にきた人のために調理した」（Ⅱサムエル１２章１節－４節）。
言うまでもなくナタンはここで「富める人」をダビデとし、「貧しい人」をダビデの部下としています。ここには『その小羊は彼および彼の子供たちと共に成長し、彼の食物を食べ、彼のわんから飲み、彼のふところで寝て、彼にとっては娘のようであった』というように、どんなにその人が小羊を愛したかということが書かれています。そして、想像しますに、この譬えはあながちつくり話ではなく、当時、小羊を我が子のようにかわいがる人達がいたことがうかがい知れます。イエス様もこの譬えのように、私達を愛する羊とし、ご自身を牧者として、譬えを語られました。私達がシリーズとして見ておりますヨハネによる福音書からその箇所を見てまいりましょう。
1よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。羊の囲いにはいるのに、門からでなく、ほかの所からのりこえて来る者は、盗人であり、強盗である。2門からはいる者は、羊の羊飼である。3門番は彼のために門を開き、羊は彼の声を聞く。そして彼は自分の羊の名をよんで連れ出す。4自分の羊をみな出してしまうと、彼は羊の先頭に立って行く。羊はその声を知っているので、彼について行くのである。5ほかの人には、ついて行かないで逃げ去る。その人の声を知らないからである」。6イエスは彼らにこの比喩を話されたが、彼らは自分たちにお話しになっているのが何のことだか、わからなかった。7そこで、イエスはまた言われた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。わたしは羊の門である。8わたしよりも前にきた人は、みな盗人であり、強盗である。羊は彼らに聞き従わなかった。9わたしは門である。わたしをとおってはいる者は救われ、また出入りし、牧草にありつくであろう。10盗人が来るのは、盗んだり、殺したり、滅ぼしたりするためにほかならない。わたしがきたのは、羊に命を得させ、豊かに得させるためである。11わたしはよい羊飼である。よい羊飼は、羊のために命を捨てる。12羊飼ではなく、羊が自分のものでもない雇人は、おおかみが来るのを見ると、羊をすてて逃げ去る。そして、おおかみは羊を奪い、また追い散らす。13彼は雇人であって、羊のことを心にかけていないからである。14わたしはよい羊飼であって、わたしの羊を知り、わたしの羊はまた、わたしを知っている。15それはちょうど、父がわたしを知っておられ、わたしが父を知っているのと同じである。そして、わたしは羊のために命を捨てるのである。（ヨハネ１０章１節－１５節）
今日はこのところに記されていることから、私達の牧者なるイエス様の心、すなわち羊飼いの心というものを見ていきたいと思います。そこで、まずお話したいことはここでイエス様が「わたしは羊の門だ」と言われていることです。当時、羊達は夜の間、囲いの中に入れられました。そこには当然、その囲いに出入りするための場所というものがあったのでしょう。そのところをイエス様は門と呼ばれ、ご自身を「わたしは羊の門である」と言われたのです。まさしくそこは囲いに出入りする場所ですから、とても大切な要所となります。
1わたしは山にむかって目をあげる。わが助けは、どこから来るであろうか。2わが助けは、天と地を造られた主から来る。3主はあなたの足の動かされるのをゆるされない。あなたを守る者はまどろむことがない。4見よ、イスラエルを守る者はまどろむこともなく、眠ることもない。5主はあなたを守る者、主はあなたの右の手をおおう陰である。6昼は太陽があなたを撃つことなく、夜は月があなたを撃つことはない。7主はあなたを守って、すべての災を免れさせ、またあなたの命を守られる。8主は今からとこしえに至るまで、あなたの出ると入るとを守られるであろう（詩篇１２１篇１節－８節）
このところの状況を想像しましょう。巡礼者がエルサレムに向かって巡礼の旅を続けている。陽が暮れ、一つ所で一夜を過ごし、翌朝、目覚めると目の前に山がそびえたっています。あの山の中には何が潜んでいるか分かりません。「９１１」をすれば飛んで助けに来てくれる人はおらず、何が起きてもおかしくない場所です。
しかし、彼はそこに留まることはできません。彼は朝、一つ所を出て歩を進め、また別の所に入り体をやすめ、また翌朝、出て行きます。その朝毎の出発、そして夕毎の帰宅を神は見守られるとこの詩篇１２１篇は言っているのです。
この「出ると入る」という言葉はモーセもその晩年に自分が導いてきたイスラエルの民を前にしてこのように使いました。「わたしは、きょう、すでに百二十歳になり、もはや出入りすることはできない。（申命記３１章２節）。
彼はここでもはや自分のはたらきそのものをすることができなくなったと言いました。そう、彼とて人間、年を取り、主のもとに帰る時がきたのです。ゆえにここでは朝毎、のチェックアウト、夕毎のチェックイン以上のことを語っています。そうです、イエス様が出ると入るを見守られる門であるということは、神様が私達の日常の出来事全て見守られるお方であるということです。
イスラエルの三代目の王、ソロモンはその王位を継承する時の心にある思いをこのように神様に打ち明けています。
『7わが神、主よ、あなたはこのしもべを、わたしの父ダビデに代って王とならせられました。しかし、わたしは小さい子供であって、出入りすることを知りません』（列王記上３章７節節）。
ソロモンは「わたしは小さい子供であって、出入りすることを知りません」と言いました。それは彼が一国の王になるにあたり、自分にはその民を導くリーダーシップや責任能力がまだありませんということです。ソロモンにとりまして「出入り」とはまさしく彼が負うべき国を背負うという責任でありました。しかし、神様はこの年少の王の足りない所を見守り、彼をイスラエルの王へと成長させたのです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、私達にも日々、色々な出入りがあります。皆さんの中にはご家族のどなたかを数か月、外国に送られる方達がいますでしょう。朝早く出勤し、夜遅くに帰宅する方達がおりますでしょう。負いきれないと感じる責任を背負って暮らしている方もいることでしょう。そんな私達の出ると入るとを主イエス様は常に見守っていてくださるというのです。このことは私達にとりましてどんなに大きな意味をもつことでありましょうか。
しかし、中にはこの門を通らずに、他のところを乗り越えてくる者達もおり、彼らは盗人であり、強盗がいるとイエス様はここで言われます。彼らは羊に対する隠し事がありますので、門から入ることはできないのです。
さらにここには『12羊飼ではなく、羊が自分のものでもない雇人は、おおかみが来るのを見ると、羊をすてて逃げ去る。そして、おおかみは羊を奪い、また追い散らす。13彼は雇人であって、羊のことを心にかけていないからである』とも書かれています。
そう、羊飼いの振りをしている者達です。もし、その者が真の羊飼いではなく、その羊も自分に属していないものであるのなら、彼は自分の体をはって羊を守ろうとはしないでしょう。彼は盗人や狼が来るとその前に立ちはだかるのではなくて、羊を置いて逃げ去りますから、囲いの中にいる羊達も追い散らされてしまうのです。
このように考えますと囲いの外は常に危険がつきまとうということが分かります。そこでは、その囲いを乗り越えて奪っていく者達が虎視眈眈とその機会を狙っており、また本来、羊を守るべき者が、狼が来ると羊を置いて逃げてしまうというのです。彼らには羊飼いの自覚がなく、羊のことを考えていないからです。聖書を読んでまいります時に、この“囲い”は後に“教会”となっていくことを私達は知ります。パウロはミレトにある教会の長老たちにこんな言葉を投げかけています。
28どうか、あなたがた自身に気をつけ、また、すべての群れに気をくばっていただきたい。聖霊は、神が御子の血であがない取られた神の教会を牧させるために、あなたがたをその群れの監督者にお立てになったのである。29わたしが去った後、狂暴なおおかみが、あなたがたの中にはいり込んできて、容赦なく群れを荒すようになることを、わたしは知っている。30また、あなたがた自身の中からも、いろいろ曲ったことを言って、弟子たちを自分の方に、ひっぱり込もうとする者らが起るであろう。31だから、目をさましていなさい。そして、わたしが三年の間、夜も昼も涙をもって、あなたがたひとりびとりを絶えずさとしてきたことを、忘れないでほしい。32今わたしは、主とその恵みの言とに、あなたがたをゆだねる。御言には、あなたがたの徳をたて、聖別されたすべての人々と共に、御国をつがせる力がある（使徒行伝２０章２８節－３２節）。
私達は神様の前に羊であり、イエス様は今も私達の羊飼いでありますが、同時に教会にはその群れを牧させる者が立たされています。パウロはミレトの教会を去るにあたり、そこにおる長老達にそのことを自覚させ、教会に起こりうることを話します。すなわち、教会に凶暴な狼が入って来て、容赦なくその群れを荒らすというのです。そのことが起こることをパウロは知っているというのです。また、その囲いの中でも曲がったことをいう者が出てくるであろうといいます。ですから主イエスは私達の羊飼いとして、羊の門として教会を守ってくださるが、あなたがた自身もあたかも教会の門番かのようにして目を覚まして、このことに注意をしていなさいというのです。あなた方は雇人ではなく、その群れの牧者として任じられているのだから、囲いの中にいる者達を守らなければならないというのです。
ヨハネは羊の門、羊飼いであるイエス様が何をなさるかということをさらにこう書いています。すんわち羊飼いの役割として、彼らが羊を『牧草にありつかせ、羊に命を豊かに得させる』と書かれています。皆さん、羊を思う羊飼いが門の傍らに座り、夜空を眺める時に彼らは何を考えているのでしょうか。彼らは囲いの中にいる羊のことをいつも考えています。そして、明日はどこに連れて行ったら彼らは満腹するだろうかということを考えているのです。あの丘の向こうには一月、行っていないから、青草が生えていることだろう。それなら、明日はあそこまで足を延ばそうと。他にはどこかいい場所はないだろうか。羊達がお腹いっぱいになる場所はどこだろうかと。彼らはただ羊を養うということだけではなく、どうしたらさらに豊かに養われるだろうかということを四六時中、考えているのです。そして、あらゆる手段を通してその機会を提供しようといつも考えているのです。
若い頃、今よりも多く食べました（今でも十分、食べているだろうという囁きがあることは十分承知しています）。そんな若かりし時、知り合いの方がバフェに連れて行ってくださいました。その方はもう大人です。若い自分のためにバフェを選んでくだっさったのでしょう。私は言うまでもなく、その人の前でお腹がはちきれんんばかりに食べました。その方はもう年齢的にたくさんを食べる方ではありませんでしたが、がつがつ食べている私を見、微笑みながらこう言ったのです「バフェに若い人を連れてきて、がつがつ食べている姿を見るのは楽しいわ」と。羊飼いの楽しみは羊達が喜んで緑の野にて草を食べることです。彼らが養われていることです。
イエス様は何をもって私達を養ってくださるのでしょうか。私達の霊の糧は聖書の言葉なのです。イエス様はいつも私達の満腹を願っている方です。主の言葉がどのように人々の心に届いて、彼らが食べて満腹するのか、イエス様は人々の様子を観察し、喜ばれるのです。
教会というものを一つ、囲いとするのなら、この囲いの中に私達は今、来て、神様を礼拝しています。今日はカレーランチがあります。教会ではよく食事をします。しかし、それが全てではありません。私達の教会では貝を獲り、それを食べます。教会ではキャンプにいったり、時にスポーツを楽しんだりします。しかし、これらは全て教会において第一のものではありません。それらが第一であり、それらのことだけをしているのなら教会はサンディエゴにある日系コミュニティーセンターと同じなのです。これらの楽しみを教会から奪ってはなりませんが、私達はそのことだけを考えていてはいけません。
特に牧師が寝ても覚めても考えていなければならないことは、どうしたら御言葉をもって満腹していただけるのかということです。いつも口まで食物を持って行って養うことから始まり、それで終わってはなりません。自分で食事がとれるようになるまで、いつも祈り、考え、そして来る日も来る日も御言葉を語り続けるのです。ここに来れば聖書の言葉によって養われるためのバイブルスタディーや家庭集会のメニューがあるのです。そして、どれもよかったら食べてくださいと勧めるのです。
主なる羊飼いはまたご自身についてこう書いています。3門番は彼のために門を開き、羊は彼の声を聞く。そして彼は自分の羊の名をよんで連れ出す。4自分の羊をみな出してしまうと、彼は羊の先頭に立って行く。羊はその声を知っているので、彼について行くのである。
私達の目に羊はどれも同じに見えます。皆、同じ姿かたちをして、そしてその毛は白いのです。どうして、羊飼いは羊を名前で呼ぶことができるのでしょうか。私達にはどれも同じに見える羊の特徴を知っているから名前をつけることができるに違いありません。「少し毛並みが違うもの」「のんびりと草を食べるもの」「せっかちなもの」。イエス様は私達のそんな性質を全て承知で、私達の名前を読んでくださるお方です。私達はその御声を聞くのです。その御声をいつも聞いているのなら、その御声とは異なる声がすぐ分かるのです。いつも聖書に養われているのなら、私達は主の御声を聞き分けるのです。それは主が語りかけているのか、否、誰かの甘い言葉なのか、否、自分の心にある願いなのか聞き分けることができるのです。
そして、最後にこの羊は驚くべきことを言っています。そう、この羊飼いは羊のために命を捨てるというのです。羊飼いという仕事は決して楽なものではありませんでした。クリスマスの出来事においても度々、指摘されますように羊飼いには戸籍もない貧しい者達でありました。暑さの厳しいパレスチナにおいて羊達に十分な水を与えなければなりません。聖書の中にはそんな者達が度々、井戸辺で水をめぐって争ったと書かれています。それは牧草にも言えることで、常に移動することが求められ、行く先々で不意にに盗人や猛獣の襲撃にも会うこともあり、まさしく命をかけて、羊を守らなければならなかったのです。
まさしくイエス様が私はあなたたちの羊飼いだと言われる時に、このことに対する覚悟がありました。しかし、イエス様が羊のために命を捨てると言われた時、それは私は盗人や猛獣の襲撃によってやもえずに命を失うということではなくて、私は愛するわが羊のために自ら進んで命を与えると言われたのです。
言うまでもない、それはイエス・キリストの十字架です。このお方は私達の門となり、私達の出ると入るとを守られ、その関心は私達がどれだけ豊かに養われるかということにあり、私達の性質を全て承知の上で、私達の名を親しく呼び、そして、私達の間に起こる問題の元凶となっている私達の罪に対する私達が受けるべき罰の身代わりとなって、私達の罪を無罪放免にしてくださったのです。
主にある皆さん、私達はこのようなお方を私達の羊飼いですと言っているのです。確かに日毎、色々なことが私達に迫り来ます。しかし、羊飼いなる主は私達と共におられます。この平安と喜びを私達に与えてくれるものは世にはありません。
The heart of Shepherd

John 10:1-15
I have seen people who walk with their dogs in my neighborhood. I also see people like this at parks, beaches, and even mountains. I am sure people really love dogs, but I have never seen anyone who walks an Ostrich or elephant. Neither have I ever seen someone walking a sheep. We do not see sheep except when we go to a zoo or farm. Sheep is in the Bible more than any animal. The word “sheep or lamb” is written more than 700 times in the Bible.
As one example, when King David committed adultery with his subordinate’s wife, Nathan came to him and told the parable about sheep.
The Lord sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”
Nathan pointed David as “a rich man” and the subordinate as “a poor man”. Nathan described, “He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him”. This is not just a parable but we can imagine that people really cherished their lambs during that time. Jesus Christ also described himself as a shepherd and he loves us like the sheep. Let us read the story from the book of John today.
10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.
7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:1-15)
I would like to focus on the heart of our shepherd, Jesus Christ from these Bible verses. Let us see the words Jesus said “I am the gate of sheep“. The sheep go in the pen at night, and of course they have an entrance to enter the pen. Jesus called the entrance, the gate. That is the place sheep come and go, so this is a very important spot.
We know the famous Psalm 121. Yes, God watches our coming and going.
1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
Let us imagine this situation. The pilgrims keep going on their journey to Jerusalem. The sun sets and they stay the night at one place. When they wake up the next morning, they see mountains in front of them. They do not know what is there in the mountains. They do not know what will happen in the mountain. There will be no one who will come and save them when they may need help.
But they cannot stay there. They wake up, keep going and stay at a different place the next night. In the morning, they will start walking again. Psalm 121 says, God watches and protects the going and coming every morning and every evening.
The English Standard Version mentions the words of Moses like this in Deuteronomy 31:2; “I am 120 years old today. I am no longer able to go out and come in”.
Moses said here, I am no longer able to go out and come in. He is now old and the time has come for Moses to go home to heaven. These words are saying more than just a checking in and out of a hotel. Jesus is the gate and he is watching over every event in our life.
The third King of Israel, Solomon asked God when he succeed the throne, he said
7 “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.
The Japanese translation says, I am only a little child and do not know how to go out and come in. This means that as he becomes the king, he does not have the ability to take the responsibility and leadership, but God watched over him and raised him up to become King of Israel.
Dear brothers and sisters, we also have coming and going in our daily life. There are people who send their family abroad for many months. There are people who carry great responsibility and go to work early in the morning and come home late. God is always watching over our days. “I am the gate of your life” Brothers and sisters, this means a lot for us.
But Jesus said, some do not enter the sheep pen through the gate, but climbs the wall. Jesus said they are a thief and a robber. They cannot enter the gate because they are hiding something bad from the sheep.
Jesus also said12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
Yes, he just pretends to be like a shepherd. If he is not a real shepherd and the sheep is not his, he will not protect them. He will not stand against the wolf and thief, he will abandon the sheep and run away and the sheep are scattered.
We know the outside of a pen is always dangerous. The enemies are always trying to get a chance to climb over the gate and attack the sheep. As we read the Bible, we find that the pen is the church. Paul wrote the letter to the elders in Miletus.
28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.32 “Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
We are sheep and Jesus is our shepherd, but there are also people who are called to be a shepherd of the people in the church. As Paul leaves the church in Miletus, he made sure the elders realize their roles as shepherds and told them what will happen in their church. Namely, Paul says, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. And even from their own number men will rise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. Therefore, like our shepherd Jesus protects us as our gate, you also should be careful and become like a gate of the church, because you are not one who is just hired but you are called and assigned by God as a shepherd at church.
John also wrote, Jesus will find pasture for the sheep and the sheep will have life, and have it to the full. (9) When the shepherd sits at the gate of the pen at night and looks up at the stars, what is he thinking about? He is always thinking about his sheep, and where he should take them tomorrow to feed. Where is the pasture that will make them full. He is not only thinking about feeding but how he can feed them fully. He always thinks about this day and night.
When I was young I ate a lot. I know some of you must think, no pastor you still eat a lot. In my younger days, my acquaintance took me to a buffet. Without hesitation, I ate, I ate a lot. The person who took me was an adult, so he does not eat a lot but he looked at me with a smile and said, “I really enjoy seeing young men eat fully”. The joy of shepherd is to see the sheep eat the pasture. He really loves to see the sheep satisfied and full.
How will Jesus feed us. Our spiritual food is the words of the Bible. Jesus is always wishing for us to be full. He watches us eat the bread and get full. He rejoices when we are full.
If our church is a pen, we are now worshiping God in the pen. We have a curry lunch today. We eat a lot at our church, but that is not all. We catch the clams and eat. We go camping and enjoy sport, but that is not the most important thing at our church. If these are our number one priority, we are just like a Japanese Community Center. We should not take these joys away from our church, but we should not think only about these fellowship.
Especially, a pastor has to ask himself day and night how can I feed the words of God to the people and not only feed, but make them full. It will start with taking the food to their mouths, like newborn baby, but we should not keep that manner. We have to pray, think and preach till they eat by themselves. A Pastor should prepare the menu and tell the people, come and see the menu of various spiritual food, and you can take whatever you want, whenever you want. This is all you can eat.
Our Lord also said, 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.
When we see the sheep, they all look the same to our eyes. They really look similar and their wool is all white. How can a shepherd call them by their name? He must know each character of the sheep and named them according to that character. “Different Hair”, Slow, Timid,,,,. Jesus also knows everything about us and call us by our name, and we hear his voice. If we hear the voice always, we should be able to identify his voice from another voice. We can know if the voice is from the Lord or not.
Our shepherd, Jesus says an amazing thing, he said the shepherd dies for the sheep. The job of a shepherd is not easy. As we hear in a Christmas message, the shepherd is poor and they do not have a place to stay. They have to find water in hot weather and as the Bible mentions, a shepherd must fight others for the water. The situation is the same with the pasture, they always face the same kind of danger. A shepherd may stumble up against dangerous enemies like bandits or beast. They have to risk their life to protect their sheep.
When Jesus said I am your shepherd, he said this with conviction. Jesus did not get killed by like bandits or beast but he gave his life for us.
That is the cross of Jesus Christ. He became our gate, and watches our going and coming, and is always interested about how fully we are fed, and he knows everything about us and calls us by our name, and he sacrifices himself to redeem our sins and declare that we are forgiven.
Dear brothers and sisters, we call him our shepherd. Surely we are facing so many things every day, but our shepherd is always with us. There is no one like him in this world who gives us His peace and joy. Let us pray.
