今日の情報社会において、私達は膨大な情報を得ることができます。しかし、そのような状況の中で私達に必要なのは、その情報の多さではなくて、その情報の選別であり、その背後にあるものを見極めることです。その背後にどんな神のみ心や知恵が隠されているのか、そのメッセージを聞き分けることです。これらのことは聖霊の助けなしに私達に出来るものではありません。

最期に何度も語られた約束
ヨハネ１６章７節ー１５節

私達はヨハネによる福音書を見ておりますが、今日は１６章の７節から１５節を見て生きたく願っております。その箇所を読ませていただきます。

 7しかし、わたしはほんとうのことをあなたがたに言うが、わたしが去って行くことは、あなたがたの益になるのだ。わたしが去って行かなければ、あなたがたのところに助け主はこないであろう。もし行けば、それをあなたがたにつかわそう。8それがきたら、罪と義とさばきとについて、世の人の目を開くであろう。9罪についてと言ったのは、彼らがわたしを信じないからである。10義についてと言ったのは、わたしが父のみもとに行き、あなたがたは、もはやわたしを見なくなるからである。11さばきについてと言ったのは、この世の君がさばかれるからである。12わたしには、あなたがたに言うべきことがまだ多くあるが、あなたがたは今はそれに堪えられない。13けれども真理の御霊が来る時には、あなたがたをあらゆる真理に導いてくれるであろう。それは自分から語るのではなく、その聞くところを語り、きたるべき事をあなたがたに知らせるであろう。14御霊はわたしに栄光を得させるであろう。わたしのものを受けて、それをあなたがたに知らせるからである。15父がお持ちになっているものはみな、わたしのものである。御霊はわたしのものを受けて、それをあなたがたに知らせるのだと、わたしが言ったのは、そのためである。（ヨハネ１６章７節ー１５節）

 このところで冒頭、イエス様は弟子達を前にして『しかし、わたしはほんとうのことをあなたがたに言うが、わたしが去って行くことは、あなたがたの益になるのだ。わたしが去って行かなければ、あなたがたのところに助け主はこないであろう』（７）と言われました。

イエス様は弟子達にわたしはあなたたちのもとから去っていくと言われました。彼らの前から自分はいなくなるというのです。このようなことを聞きます時に、私達は心に不安をもちます。実際にイエス様と共に三年半もの間、活動を共にしてきた弟子達はどんな思いでこの言葉を聞いたのでしょうか。しかし、イエス様は彼らを見放すのではなく、さらにこれまで以上に彼らのはたらきが力強く前進することができるように、このことはあなたがたにとって益となるのだと言われ、ある事について弟子達に話して聞かせたのです。

場所は最後の晩餐の部屋。その名の通り、イエス様と弟子達の最後の食事がもたれている只中、まさしくイエス様が弟子達から去っていく直前の時です。その状況、その場所でイエス様は四回も繰り返してあることについて彼らに話したのです。

ヨハネ１４：１６－１７「わたしは父にお願いしよう。そうすれば、父は別に助け主を送って、いつまでもあなたがたと共におらせて下さるであろう。それは、真理の御霊である。この世はそれを見ようともせず、知ろうともしないので、それを受けることができない」

 ヨハネ１５：２６「わたしが父のみもとからあなたがたにつかわそうとしている助け主、すなわち、父のみもとから来る真理の御霊が下る時、それは私についてあかしをするであろう」

ヨハネ１６：７－８「しかし、わたしは本当のことをあなたがたに言うが、わたしが去って行くことは、あなたがたの益になるのだ。わたしが去って行かなければ、あなたがたのところに助け主はこないであろう。もしいけば、それをあなたがたにつかわそう。それが来たら、罪と義と裁きについて、世の人の目を開くであろう」

ヨハネ１６：１３－１５「けれども真理の御霊が来る時には、あなたがたをあらゆる真理に導いてくれるであろう。それは自分から語るのではなく、その聞くところを語り、きたるべき事をあなたがたに知らせるであろう。御霊は私に栄光を得させるであろう。わたしのものを受けて、それをあなたがたに知らせるからである」

 このところで「助け主」、「御霊」と何度も言われていることは「聖霊」のことを意味していまして、「また言っている」と言われても仕方ないほどに、イエス様はここで繰り返し聖霊について語っているのです。そしてこれらの言葉には七回も「～であろう」という約束が記されており、そうすることによりこれらのことは、これから起きることなのだとイエス様は語っているのです。

空港で見送ってくれている者に別れを告げてゲートに向かうという経験をされた方がいると思います。搭乗時間が間近となり、その最後の最後、心にある思いを彼らに伝えます。もし、それが最後の別れとなるのなら、これだけは伝えておきたいということを私達は何度も彼らに伝えるでしょう。仕事が大変な者に対しては「無理しちゃだめだよ」と何度も語り、受験を控えている子には「最善を尽くすように」と伝えるでしょう。

この言葉はイエス様が十字架にかかる直前のものでありますから、当然、この限られた状況で弟子達に語ることは「どうでもいいこと」ではないのです。それはイエス様が最後にどうしても伝えなければならないことであり、それが「私は去っていくが聖霊があなたたちのもとに来る」という約束だったのです。イエス様は限られた時間の中で、このことを繰りかえし、繰り返し話されたのです。なぜ、何度も何度も聖霊について語られたのでしょうか。なぜなら、そのことはイエス様にとっても私達にとっても、最重要なことだからです。

イエス様が天に帰られた後、私達の目にそのお姿は見えませんが、この聖霊はイエス様が約束されたとおり、私達の許に来られ、今も私達の間で、そのはたらきをなしておられるのです。さて、それではこの聖霊というお方は具体的にどのようなはたらきをなさるお方なのでしょうか。その聖霊のはたらきから今日は聖書が記している五つのことを皆さんとみていきたいと思います。一つ目のこと、それは「聖霊は私達を導く」ということです。

聖霊は私達を導く

イエス様が弟子達と共におられた時、イエス様はその先頭に立ち、常に彼らを導かれました。ある時はガリラヤ湖を前に、彼らに向かって言われました、「向こう岸にわたろう」。またイエス様は７２人の者達を選び、町や村へ的確な指示と共に二人づつ遣わされました（ルカ９章１節以降）。

女子サッカーの日本代表に２０１１年のワールドカップで優勝した時にキャプテンをしていた澤穂希（さわ・ほまれ）という選手がいますが、彼女は年下で経験の少ないチームメイトに向かい「苦しい時は私の背中を見なさい」と言いました。このような言葉を言える彼女はすごいと思いますが、それを聞いた選手にとってこの言葉はなんと心強かったかと思います。

私達は思うかもしれません。今もイエス様が目に見えるかたちで私達の前を歩いてくださり、その背中から目を離さずに従うことができたらなと。しかし、今、私達の前に目に見えるかたちでイエス様はおりませんし、イエス様ご自身からダイレクトに指示を受けることはありません。しかし、その代わりに今の時は聖霊が私たちを導くのだと聖書は言うのです。これはとても大切です。

使徒１６章６節，７節にはこのような言葉が記されています。「それから彼らはアジアで御言葉を語ることを聖霊に禁じられたので、フルギヤ・ガラテヤ地方をとおって行った。そして、ムシヤのあたりにきてから、ビテニヤに進んで行こうとしたところ、イエスの御霊がこれを許さなかった」

私達がどこに向かって歩んでいるのかということは時に、私達にとって生死を分けるような問題となることがあります。ここには伝道旅行をしていたパウロとその一行がその旅を進めるにあたり、聖霊によってアジアやビテニヤに進むことを禁じられたとありますが、皆さんはこのようなことを体験したことがないでしょうか。これから右か左かどちらに行くべきか。そのような時に「こちらに行くべきだ」、あるいは「そちらには行くべきではない」という内なる迫りを感じたというようなことがないでしょうか。

「自分はこちらに行きたい」、そんな返事をしようと思っていたのに、不思議とそちらに行こうとすることに対して心に平安がなく、時機早々にその返事をしなかったことに感謝したというようなことがありませんか。

聖霊は私達の進むべき道を導いてくださるお方です。このたびの修養会において講師の藤本満先生は「あなたの人生は強行突破の人生ではありませんか」と問いかけてくださいました。とにかく自分の思うがままに、自分が欲するままに、そのところで出会う人達の言葉や、もっと言いますと聖霊の語りかけに耳を傾けるようなことを全くせずに、ただ走り続けてきませんでしたかというのです。聖霊様の後を歩むのではなくて、聖霊様を後ろに従えて歩んできませんでしたかと。

このような独りよがりな強行突破には無理があります。そんな私達の後をついてきてくれる人達がいるとするのなら、私達の強行突破は彼らをも混乱させるでしょう。ですから、私達は聖霊様の導きに従うべきです。二つ目のこと、それは「聖霊は人格をもつ」ということです。

聖霊は人格をもつ

「すなわち聖霊とわたしたちとは、次の必要事項のほかは、どんな負担をも、あなたがたに負わせないことに決めた」（使徒１５：２８）。

私達はその人生において無数の決断をしてきました。その決断が行きついた場所が今の私達であり、これからも私達は多くの決断を日毎にしながら生きていきます。その一つ一つの決断が私達のこれからの人生を決めていきます。その時に聖霊が私達の決断に関わるということはとても大切なことです。

ここに記されている言葉はあたかも聖霊というお方が人格をもつお方として、私達の相談相手となってくださり、そのことによって決断に導かれたかのように記されていますが、まさしくその通りなのです。この言葉は弟子達が大切なこと決める時に、その決断は自分たちの思いだけでしたのではなくて、あたかも聖霊が彼らと共にテーブルにつき、まさしく彼らと聖霊が事を決めたということなのです。すなわち、私達の決断、デシジョン・メイキングの場に聖霊様も列席していただき、その御声に私達が耳を向けるということです。いかがでしょうか、私達はどれくらい、私達のあの決断、この決断の中に聖霊の語りかけを取り入れているでしょうか。

またエペソ４章３０節には「神の聖霊を悲しませてはいけない」と書かれています。聖霊は悲しむというのです。聖霊は掴みどころのないボンヤリとしたものではなくて、その聖霊は悲しむのです。イエス様は神の子としてこの地で生きられましたが、わたしたちと同じような感情をもって生きました。同じように聖霊も私達の言動によって悲しむし、また反対に悲しみのであるならば、その反対に喜ぶというのです。

公の場で、誰も見ていない場所において、はたして聖霊は私達を見て悲しんでいるのでしょうか、喜んでいるのでしょうか。私達の心からの願いは聖霊が喜ばれる生き方をすることです。実に聖霊は御人格を持ち、私達と共に喜び、悲しみ、私達の相談に応じてくださるお方なのです。三つ目のこと、それは「聖霊はとりなしてくださる」ということです。

聖霊はとりなしてくださる

「御霊もまた同じように、弱い私達を助けてくださる。なぜなら、わたしたちはどう祈ったらよいか分からないが、御霊みずから言葉にあらわせない切なるうめきをもって、わたしたちのために取り成してくださるからである。そして、人の心を探り知る方は、御霊の思うところがなんであるかを知っておられる。なぜなら、御霊は聖徒のために神の御旨にかなうとりなしをして下さるからである」（ローマ８章２６節‐２７節）。

私達は神に祈ります。しかし、時にどのように祈ったらいいのか分からないことがあります。私達自身も抱えている課題に対して、どうなるように祈ったらいいのか分からないし、何が神様の御心なのかが分からないのです。しかし、そんな私達に代わって、聖霊は私達の心にあることを神に伝え、その御旨にかなうとりなしをしてくださるというのです。

ですから、私達の祈りが先に進まない時、何を祈ればいいのか行き詰っている時、私達はそれで祈りを諦めてしまうのではなくて、そんな私達の祈りをじっと聞き、私達と神との間にあって、神の御旨にかなったとりなしをして下さる聖霊を仰ぎ見るべきです。確かにこの聖霊は私達の祈りを聞き、私達と神様との間をとりもってくださることでしょう。四つ目のこと、それは「聖霊は私達を教える」ということです。

聖霊は私達を教える

「しかし、助け主、すなわち、父がわたしの名によってつかわされる聖霊は、あなたがたにすべてのことを教え、またわたしが話しておいたことを、ことごとく思い起こさせるであろう。わたしは平安をあなたがたに残していく。わたしの平安をあなたがたに与える。わたしが与えるのは、世が与えるようなものとは異なる。あなたがたは心を騒がせるな。またおじけるな」(ヨハネ１４章２６節－２７節)

ここに記されているように聖霊は私達に全てのことを教えるというのです。全てのこととは文字通り、全てであります。生きること、そして死ぬこと、その間にある私達の人生、全ての事柄に対して教えるということです。また、私達が今、見ているもの、聞いているものの中に、かつてイエス様が言われた言葉を思い起こさせるはたらきをしてくださるというのです。ああ、このことはイエス様が言われていたあのことなのか、ああ、イエス様はこのことを言われていたのだなと気がつかせてくださるということです。そして、言うまでもなくこのようなことになりますと、これは私達の積んだ知識とか経験というものを超えた天来の教えとなるのであり、これこそが私達が最も必要としていることです。

日本の予備校にはカリスマ講師という人達がいて、そのクラスはすぐに受講生がいっぱいとなってしまって、受講することが難しいと聞いたことがあります。皆がその講師の教えを聞きたいからです。そのことによって、希望校の受検に受かりたいからです。しかし、あえて言うまでもなく私達の人生はどこかの学校に入学することがゴールではなく、ある意味、そのこと自体はいよいよスタート地点に立ったというような時なのです。

いわゆるいい学び舎に入学し、卒業すれば、あたかも人生の勝利者となれるのではないかと私達は思うことがありますが、同時にそんなことはないということを私達は知っています。学校を出てから、まさしく私達は人生の難問奇問に向き合っていくからです。人の世の無常、結婚問題、子育ての問題、人間関係、病、災難等に直面していく。これらには予測不可能な人間の心が関わっていますゆえに、その時に大学卒業のディプロマは全くとは言いませんが、ほとんど役に立ちません。

三浦綾子さんが著書に書いていますが、目を見張るような学歴をもち、仕事でも多くの実績をもった女性が結婚して、やがて子供が生まれ、仕事をやめて育児に専念したというのです。それまでは学校の成績もよく、テキパキと目の前にある課題をこなしていた彼女は目の前にいる我が子を前に、なんと自分は無力なのかと打ちのめされたというのです。

わが子でありながら、子育てが自分の思い描いたようにいかない。幾冊も育児書を読むけれど、書かれているような理想にはほど遠い、その時、学校の卒業証書、かつて会社で表彰された実績はほとんど意味をなしません。そう、子供に限らず、私達は特にこのように人に向き合う時に途方に暮れることが多々、あるのです。そのような生活の中で聖霊は私たちにどうすべきかということを教えてくださるというのです。

あぁ、あの時イエス様はこう言っておられた、それはこういうことなのか。そのことは今、この私が直面している状況の中でこのように生かすことができるのかというように、私達は天来の知恵を聖霊を通して日々、いただくことができるのです。最後の五つ目のこと、それは「真理を見分ける聖霊」ということです。

真理を見分ける聖霊

御霊はすべてのものをきわめ、神の深みまでもきわめるのだからである。いったい、人間の思いは、その内にある人間の霊以外に、誰が知っていようか。それと同じように神の思いも、神の御霊以外には知るものはない（第一コリント２章１０節、１１節）。

私達が日々の生活をしていく時に、どれだけ一つ一つの事象の背後にあるものを見極めることができるか、どれだけ、その深さを知ることができるかということはとても大切なことです。どこに真理があるのか、どこに善悪の一線があるのか、このことを見極めることができないと大変なことになります。

子供を世に送り出したとしましょう。もしかしたら、彼らはあの聖書に記されている放蕩息子のように生きるかもしれない。世界はまさしくコンクリート・ジャングル、隙あらば、私達を誘惑し、根こそぎ奪おうとする者達はいくらでもいます。実に彼らに必要なのは聖霊です。

皆さん、ここまでお話してきて、実はまだまだ聖霊のはたらきというものはあるのです。しかし、今日はここまでにしておきましょう。そして、このように見てきますと、あることに気がつきませんか。そうです、気がつけば聖霊はあたかも私達の目の前にいつもいてくださるイエス様のように私達のすぐ身近にいつもいてくださるということを！

なぜ、イエス様はご自身が天にのぼって、弟子達の前から姿をなくす前に何度もこの聖霊についてお話になったかお分かりになりましたでしょうか。そうです、まさしくイエス様の後にこの聖霊様はイエス様が弟子達一人一人になされた具体的なことと等しい、いやある意味、肉体をもたれているゆえに、その働きの時と場所が限定されていたイエス様に対して、この聖霊のはたらきはそのような制限を受けずに、今も私達と共にあるということであり、そのはたらきを私達一人一人にもなしてくださるお方なのだということをお伝えしようとしていたのです。

まだ誰も踏み出したことのない明日に向かう時に、私達に必要なことは何でしょうか。私達の明日を誰が導いてくれるのでしょうか。今日、お話したことにより皆さんはその答えがお分かりになっていることでしょう。そうです、聖霊です。私達が聖霊と共に歩む時に私達はこの日々の生活に起きる様々な事柄を乗り越えていくことができるのです。私達に必要なことは、日々、イエス様が何度も語られたこの聖霊と共に生きることなのです。お祈りしましょう。

Message: “The Promise made many times at the End.”
(John 16 : 7-15)

 We have been looking at the Gospel of John. This morning, I would like to put the focus on John 16: 7-15. Let us read the verses.

“7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. 12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.”

In the beginning here, Jesus said to his disciples, “But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you.”

Jesus told the disciples that he will go away from them. This means that Jesus will disappear from in front of them. When we hear something like this, we would become anxious. In fact, over the three and a half years the disciples lived and worked together with Jesus. I wonder how the disciples felt when they heard this Jesus’ word. However, Jesus intended not to forsake them, but rather to make them stronger than ever, so that they could further advance their works. That is why Jesus told them that it is for your good. And he told them about the one thing special.

The location was the Last Supper room. As the name suggests, it was the room where Jesus and the disciples were having their last meal, just before Jesus was to leave them. Then and there, Jesus told his disciples repeatedly about the one thing, four times.

John 14:16-17 writes, “16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17 The Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

John 15:26 writes, “26 When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.”

John 16:7-8 writes, “7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.”

John 16: 13-15 writes, “13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.”

The “Counselor” and “Sprit” that are frequently mentioned by Jesus here mean “the Holy Spirit”. Jesus repeatedly talked about the “Holy Spirit” so much so that they might have thought that he was saying it again. And also, there are seven promises found in these words, with the expression, “will do something”. By making these promises, Jesus prophesized what would be yet to come.

I think there are people who have the experience of going to a gate at an airport, after saying “good bye” to those who have come to see you off at the airport. The boarding time becomes close, and at the last moment, you would convey what you have on your mind to them.

If it is the last farewell, you would tell them what you just want to convey to them many times. For a person who is in a hard job situation, you might say, “Take it easy”. For a child who is facing an entrance examination, you might say, “Do your best!”

Since Jesus spoke those words just before he was crucified on the cross, of course, what Jesus told the disciples, in this limited situation, was not something unimportant. Indeed, it was the matter that Jesus must convey to the disciples before the end. It was the promise that “Jesus will leave them, but the Holy Spirit will come to them”. Jesus told this repeatedly in the limited time. Why did Jesus speak about the Holy Spirit again and again?  Because it is the most important thing to Jesus, and for us.

After Jesus went back to heaven, we do not see his figure in our eyes, but the Holy Spirit, as promised by Jesus, is in our midst and even now is working among us. Well, then practically what kind of works does the Holy Spirit perform? Today, Let us together look at the five works of the Holy Spirit that are recoded in the Bible. First, it is “the Holy Spirit leads us.”

The Holy Spirit leads us.

When Jesus was together with his disciples, Jesus always led them as the leader. One day, at the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go to the other side of the Sea”. Also, he chose 72 people, put them into pairs, and sent them to the towns and villages with precise instructions. (Luke 9:1 and after).

Homare Sawa was the captain of the Japanese women’s football team when they won the World Cup championship in 2011. She said to a younger teammate with less experience, “When you feel painful, look at my back”. I think that she is great to say such words. And I am sure that the player was much encouraged by her words.

We might think that it is wonderful to see Jesus leading us now, and we follow him, looking at his back. However, now we cannot see Jesus in a visible form in front of us, and cannot receive his instructions directly from him. But, the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit will lead us instead of Jesus. This is a very important point.

Acts 16: 6-7 writes as follows: “Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.”

When we are going to a certain place, sometimes, we may face a problem that would cause a life and death situation for us. As Paul and his companion proceed their evangelical trip, they are prohibited by the Holy Spirit to enter Bithynia. Have you had such an experience? When you have to decide which way to go, right or left, haven’t you felt inside of you such a feeling as “Should I go there?” or “Should I not go there”?

When you thought, “I want to go here”, but strangely felt no peace in your heart, and were later thankful that you did not reply too early. Have you had such an experience?

The Holy Spirit is the person who will lead us to the way that we should go. During the retreat, Shuyokai, that was just held, the speaker, Rev. Dr. Mitsuru Fujimoto asked the attendees, “Is your life a forced break through life?” This means that a person who continues to live life in a way that he or she desires without listening to others, specifically to the Holy Spirit. That is to say, instead of following the Holy Spirit, the person walks in front of the Holy Spirit, leaving the Holy Spirit behind.

Such a complacent “forced break through life” is unreasonable. If there are people who associate with such individuals, the lifestyle will surely confuse them. Therefore, we should follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The second point is that “the Holy Spirit has a personality.”

Holy Spirit has a personality.

Acts 15:28 reads as follows: “It seemed good to the Holy Sprit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements.”

We have made numerous decisions in our lives. Those decisions have led us to the position that we are now. And from now on, we will make many decisions every day. Each one of our decisions will affect our lives in the future. It’s very important to let the Holy Spirit lead us make our decisions.

Here we see the Holy Spirit as a person who acts as a counselor to lead us through our decision-making. That is absolutely right. As seen in Acts 15:28, when the disciples made an important decision, not only relying on their own thoughts, they let the Holy Spirit become involved in the decision-making, as if He were at the same table with the disciples, making a decision together with the disciples. So, we should let the Holy Spirit be seated at our decision-making table too, listening to his voice. I wonder how many times we listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit, when we made important decisions.

Ephesians 4:30 writes as follows: “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” The Holy Spirit grieves. The Holy Spirit is not something dimly elusive, but He grieves like a person. Jesus was born on this earth as the Son of God, but he lived like us with the same feelings that we have. Likewise, the Holy Spirit grieves with our words and deeds. Also, in contrast, He rejoices with our words and deeds.

In a public place, where no one is watching us, does the Holy Spirit really look at us and grieve or rejoice? Our wish from our heart is to live our lives in a way that pleases the Holy Spirit. Indeed, the Holy Spirit has a personality, and grieves or rejoices with us, and responds to our consultation. The third point is that “the Holy Spirit intercedes.”

The Holy Spirit intercedes.

Romans 8:26-27 writes as follows: “26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.”

We pray to God. However, we may not know how to pray sometimes. We may not know how to pray for the problems that we face, or we don’t know what the God’s will is. But, on behalf of us, the Holy Spirit will deliver to God what we have in mind, and intercedes with God to meet His will.

Therefore, when our prayers do not proceed well, or when we are stuck with how to pray, instead of giving up on prayer, we should look to the Holy Sprit who is patiently listening to our prayers, and intercedes between  God and us to fulfill His will. Certainly the Holy Spirit will listen to our prayers, and deliver them to God. The forth point is that “the Holy Spirit teaches us.”

The Holy Spirit teaches us.

John 14: 26-27 writes as follows: “26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

As noted here, the Holy Spirit teaches us all things. All things are literally all things. He teaches us to live, and to die, and everything in between in our lives. Also, He reminds us those words of Jesus, in whatever we see and hear now. We might say, “Oh, this is what Jesus said about that!” or “Oh, this is what Jesus meant to say!” Needless to say, this is a teaching from heaven that supersedes all our knowledge and experiences. This is what we need most.

There are so-called charisma lecturers in Japan at prep schools. I have heard that it is very difficult to be enrolled in the classes being taught by those charisma lecturers, because everybody wants to learn from them. Of course, the aim of students is to pass the entrance examinations of the colleges that they hope to get into. But, needless to say, it is not the goal of our lives to get into good colleges, rather, it is merely a time to situate ourselves on the starting point of our lives.

We often think that if someone enrolls in a prestigious college and graduates from it, he or she could become a victor of life. At the same time, we know that it is not that simple. Because he or she will face many life challenges after graduation, such as uncertainty in this world, marriage problems, problems in bringing up children, human relations, unexpected illness, mishaps, etc. Since these problems are related to unpredictable human hearts, the college diplomas are, I would not say completely useless, but almost useless during instances of those problems.

In the novel written by Ayako Miura, a woman who had a spectacular educational background, and had achieved many good works in her job, got married. After a while, a child was born, so she quit her job and engaged in bringing up the child. Up until then, she was achieving good grades at school, and was able to solve the problems that she faced in her life easily, but she felt so powerless and beaten when she faced the work of raising her own child.

Even with her own child, parenting was not as easy as previously envisioned by her. She read several childcare books, but reality is far from the ideals in the books. In times like this, a college diploma and award certificates for good works at a company mean almost nothing. Not only with children, but when we face another human beings, we often feel powerless. In such a life, the Holy Spirit will teach us what to do.

Ah, at that time, Jesus was saying so! Oh, that was what Jesus meant! Then, how shall we apply the word under the circumstances we face? We are able to receive wisdom from heaven through the Holy Spirit every day. The last of the five points is that “the Holy Spirit tells the truth.”

The Holy Spirit tells the truth.

I Corinthians 2: 10-11 writes as follows: “10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”

When we live our lives daily, it is important to discern what is behind each one of the daily events. Also, it is important how deeply you understand it, like where the truth is, where a line dividing good and evil exists, etc. If you cannot do this, you may face grave difficulties in your life.

Let’s say that we send out our children from home. They might live like the prodigal son in the Bible. The world is truly like a concrete jungle. There are plenty of bad guys waiting to lure and ruin our youths. Indeed what they need is the protection of the Holy Spirit.

In today’s information society, we can obtain an enormous amount of information. However, under the circumstance, what we need is not a lot of  information, but the selective information, and ability to see through what is behind it. That is to discern what is God’s will and the wisdom hidden behind each message. We cannot do this without the help of the Holy Spirit.

Brothers and sisters, we have looked at quite a few works of the Holy Spirit today, but there are more. But let us quit here today. As we have leaned the Holy Spirit this way, haven’t you notice one thing? That’s right, the Holy Spirit is always with us closely, as if Jesus is always there in front of our eyes!

Then, you may understand why Jesus talked to the disciples so many times about the Holy Spirit, before he went up to heaven. That’s right, Jesus was trying to convey to the disciples that the Holy Spirit, after Jesus was gone, would do the same works to each of the disciples that are practically equal to what Jesus had done to them. In a sense, the works of Jesus were limited to time and space because of his physical body, but the Holy Spirit works without such restriction. He is always with us, and works for each one of us. That is what Jesus was trying to tell his disciples.

What is necessary for us when we go toward a new day that nobody has yet stepped into? Who is going to lead us tomorrow? You may already know the answer from the message today. That’s right, He is the Holy Spirit. When we walk with the Holy Spirit, we can cope with various events that happen in our daily lives. What is necessary for us is to live every day with the Holy Spirit that Jesus spoke about so many times at the end.

６）第一コリント２章１０節、１１節を読みましょう。あなたはどのようにして善悪を見分けますか。このことについて子供達にどのように教えることができますか。なぜ、真理を見分けることは大切なのですか。真理を見分けることにより、私達が得ること、免れることがができるものにはどんなことがあるでしょうか。
