イエスの母、マリヤはイエスに関して「思いめぐらし」「心に留める」ことを知っていました。我が子が神と共にあること、神はこの子をこれから先、どのように導いていくのだろうかと思いめぐらし、神様のはたらきを自分が妨げてしまうことがないように、イエスの言動を見つつ、それを安易にとがめることなく、それを保留して心に蓄えたのです。
なぜなら彼女はイエスは神から授かった子であるということを知っていたからです。そして、このことはマリヤに限らず、本来、全ての親に共通することでもあるのです。誰一人として自分でわが子を獲得したという親はいないからです。信仰がない人であっても「子供を授かりました」と言います。なぜですか。私達の魂のどこかに、命は自分以外の大いなる存在から与えられるものであるという思いが刻まれているからでしょう。そう、この世界には子を与える存在がおり、マリヤはその存在が我が子に示されていること、我が子と共になそうとしている領域に踏み入らず、思いめぐらしたのです。心に留めていたのです。主にある皆さん、私達はそのことが何であれ、ある出来事に直面した時にそれを心に留めておりますか。その出来事を保留して神の御心をたずね求めていますか。マリヤがそうしたように、特に我が子に対して神のはたらきを考慮しつつ、心に留め、思いめぐらしているでしょうか。

十字架の言葉 その３
イエスの心・マリヤの心
２０１５年９月２７日
イエス・キリストが十字架にかけられ、そのところで語られた言葉が七つあります。最初に語られた三つの言葉はすべて他者に関するもので、以降、息を引き取るまでの間に言われた言葉は４つあり、それらはご自身について語っています。
私達は第一の言葉として「父よ、彼らをお赦しください。彼らは何をしているのか自分ではわからないのです」（ルカ２３章３４節）というイエス様を十字架にかけた者達への執り成しの祈りを見、第二の言葉として「まことに、あなたに告げます。あなたは今日、わたしと共にパラダイスにいます」（ルカ２３章４３節）とご自身と共に十字架につけられていた犯罪人に語られた言葉を見てまいりました。そして、今日は三番目の言葉となります。
25さて、イエスの十字架のそばにはイエスの母と、母の姉妹と、クロパの妻マリヤと、マグダラのマリヤとが、たたずんでいた。26イエスは、その母と愛弟子とがそばに立っているのをごらんになって母にいわれた、「婦人よ、ごらんなさい。これはあなたの子です」。27それからこの弟子に言われた、「ごらんなさい。これはあなたの母です」。そのとき以来、この弟子はイエスの母を自分の家に引きとった。（ヨハネ１９章２５節―２７節）
この時、エルサレムのゴルゴダの丘に立てられましたイエスの十字架の周りには人々の無関心、嘲笑、無知、残虐がありました。そして、その十字架の側には四人の女性もいました。イエスの母マリヤとその姉妹、クロパの妻のマリヤ、マグダラのマリヤ。そして１２人いたイエス様の弟子の一人で一番若かったヨハネです。
自分のお腹を痛めたわが子の体が粗削りの木の上に寝かされ、その手の甲に、そして足の甲に釘が撃ち込まれる、その鈍い音をマリヤはどのように聞いていたのでしょうか。わが子を憐れんだり、助けようと取り図ろうとしてくれる者は誰もなく、否、自分自身もそのことに対して全く無力であり、ただその場に居続けなければならないマリヤの気持ちはいかほどだったでしょうか。普通の母親ならそこで発狂してしまうことでしょう。その時、マリアは何を思っていたのでしょうか。彼女はイエスとの日々を思い起こしていたかもしれません。そう、あの日のことを・・・。
受胎告知
日本の童謡に「赤とんぼ」という歌があり、その歌詞に「１５でねえやは嫁に行き」という歌詞があります。貧しい時代、今ならまだ教育を受けなければならない年齢で少女は嫁がされ、嫁ぎ先では労働の即戦力として彼女達は朝から晩まで働き続けたのです。同じ状況がマリヤがヨセフという男の許嫁となった背景にもあったと思います。おそらくマリヤはまだ１５、６歳で親同士の話し合いにより、ヨセフの妻となることが定められたのでしょう。仮にマリアが１６歳でイエスを生んだとしますのなら、イエス様が十字架にかかった時というのは５０歳前後だったと思われます。今でこそ５０歳は働き盛りの年ですが、当時ではある意味、人生の晩年という年であったことでしょう。このマリヤこそ、この地球上においてメシアを胎に宿した無二の女性なのです。そのことが告げられる日はある日、突然やってきました。
26六か月目に、御使ガブリエルが、神からつかわされて、ナザレというガリラヤの町の一処女のもとにきた。27この処女はダビデ家の出であるヨセフという人のいいなづけになっていて、名をマリヤといった。28御使がマリヤのところにきて言った、「恵まれた女よ、おめでとう、主があなたと共におられます」。29この言葉にマリヤはひどく胸騒ぎがして、このあいさつはなんの事であろうかと、思いめぐらしていた（ルカ１章２６節―２９節）。
マリヤはみ使いから「恵まれた女よ、おめでとう、主があなたと共におられます」と告げられました。この言葉を受けた時、マリアは胸騒ぎがして、このことはなんのことだろうかと思いめぐらしていたというのです。
皆さん、もしこれが今日だったらどうでしょうか。同じ告知がもし皆さんの身におきましたらどうしますか。きっとこうするはずです。私達はまずコンピューターの前に座り、「超常現象」とは何なのか、「幻覚」とは何なのか、「幻聴」とは何なのかグーグルで調べるのです。そして、自分がおかしくなったのかとカウンセリングを受けたり、家族、友人、知人に「どうしましょ」と聞いてまわるのです。
主にある皆さん、私達はそのことが何であれ、ある出来事に直面した時にそれを主の前で思いめぐらしていますか。
神は時に私達には思いも及ばないことを私達に突きつけることにより、その物語を紡いでいきます。この後、マリヤはイエスを出産し、以降、しばらくの間、聖書はこの親子について沈黙を保っていますが、次にこの家族が聖書の紙面に登場するのはエルサレムの神殿境内でした。
宮詣
彼らはイエス様が１２歳となった過ぎ越しの祭りの時にエルサレムに巡礼に行きます。巡礼を終え、彼らは家路に着くのですが一日以上たって、イエスが共にいないことに気がつき、ヨセフとマリヤはエルサレムに引き返すのです。祭のために多くの巡礼者もおり、またこの時にはヨセフの子弟もいましたからイエスの不在に気がつかなかったのでしょう。彼らがエルサレムに戻ってみますと・・・・。
46そして三日の後に、イエスが宮の中で教師たちのまん中にすわって、彼らの話を聞いたり質問したりしておられるのを見つけた。47聞く人々はみな、イエスの賢さやその答に驚嘆していた。48両親はこれを見て驚き、そして母が彼に言った、「どうしてこんな事をしてくれたのです。ごらんなさい、おとう様もわたしも心配して、あなたを捜していたのです」。49するとイエスは言われた、「どうしてお捜しになったのですか。わたしが自分の父の家にいるはずのことを、ご存じなかったのですか」。50しかし、両親はその語られた言葉を悟ることができなかった。51それからイエスは両親と一緒にナザレに下って行き、彼らにお仕えになった。母はこれらの事をみな心に留めていた。52イエスはますます知恵が加わり、背たけも伸び、そして神と人から愛された（ルカ２章４６節‐５２節）。
この時のマリヤとイエスとの会話は普通の親子の会話ではありませんでした。毎週日曜日に教会から家に帰る時に、私達夫婦は子供達を捜すべく教会の全ての部屋を回ります。そんな時、もし自分の子供達が会堂で年配の信仰者達に囲まれて神学論議をしていたらどうでしょう。そしていつものように「帰るから準備しなさい」と言った時に「なんで僕たちを探しているの。僕たちが自分の父の家にいるはずのことを、知らないの」と言われたらどうしましょう。
ここにはヨセフもマリヤもイエス様の言葉を悟ることが出来なかったと書かれています。しかし、母マリヤはこれらの事をみな心に留めていたというのです。先にお話ししましたようにマリヤは受胎告知の際、御使いの言葉を聞いた時にそれを思いめぐらしていました。しかし、この度はこれらのことをみな心にとどめていたのです。But英語の聖書には「 his mother treasured all these things in her heart」と書かれています。そう、それらのことを宝を蓄えるようにして、心にとめたのです。
彼女は何を大切に心に収めたのでしょう。何を思いめぐらしたのでしょうか。この子が神と共にあること、神はこの子をこれから先、どのようにこれから導いていくのだろうかと。神様のはたらきを自分が妨げてしまうことがないように、イエスの言動を見つつ、それを安易にとがめることなく、それを保留して心に蓄えたのです。

マリヤの夫、ヨセフはこの出来事以降、聖書には出てきません。父親を中心とした当時の家族形態を思えば、ヨセフの名が出てこないということはありえないことですが、多くの学者は何かしらの理由でヨセフは亡くなったのではないかと言っています。そう考えますのなら、イエスはまさしく母マリヤに育てられ、その母にイエスは従い、仕えて育ったのです。そして、このルカ２章はこのようにして閉じられています。52イエスはますます知恵が加わり、背たけも伸び、そして神と人から愛された（ルカ２章５２節）。以降、この親子はしばらく聖書に出てきません。次にイエスとマリヤが登場するのはイエスが成人した後の、カナと呼ばれる町の結婚式でした。
カナの婚礼
1三日目にガリラヤのカナに婚礼があって、イエスの母がそこにいた。2イエスも弟子たちも、その婚礼に招かれた。3ぶどう酒がなくなったので、母はイエスに言った、「ぶどう酒がなくなってしまいました」。4イエスは母に言われた、「婦人よ、あなたは、わたしと、なんの係わりがありますか。わたしの時は、まだきていません」。5母は僕たちに言った、「このかたが、あなたがたに言いつけることは、なんでもして下さい」（ヨハネ２章１節－５節）
イエスについて思いめぐらし、心に留める日々をイエスの誕生以前からなしてきた母マリヤの心にあったものはイエスに対する全幅の信頼でした。ゆえに僕達に「このかたが、あなたがたに言いつけることは、なんでもしてください」と言ったのです。そして、イエス様はそのマリヤの信頼に応えて、この後、水をブドウ酒に変える奇跡を行いました。ルカはそれをイエスがなされた一番最初の奇跡だったと記していますが、そのイエスの奇跡はその誕生も成長も心に留め、神のはたらく余地というものを大切にしていた母親がイエスに抱いていた信頼に対するイエスのリスポンスでありました。私達が神様の御心をたずね求めつつ思いめぐらす時、神様のはたらかれる余地を心に留めていく時に、そこには神様への信頼が生まれます。
主にある皆さん、私達はそのことが何であれ、ある出来事に直面した時に神様に対する信頼を持っておりますか。マリヤは神様のはたらきを心に留め、その御心をたずね求める日々を送ることによってイエスへの信頼を会得したのです。
このカナの婚宴の時からイエス様は各地で教え、また多くの奇しきわざを始められました。そんな日々の中、ある時、こんなことがありました。
神の家族
31さて、イエスの母と兄弟たちとがきて、外に立ち、人をやってイエスを呼ばせた。32ときに、群衆はイエスを囲んですわっていたが、「ごらんなさい。あなたの母上と兄弟、姉妹たちが、外であなたを尋ねておられます」と言った。33すると、イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「わたしの母、わたしの兄弟とは、だれのことか」。34そして、自分をとりかこんで、すわっている人々を見まわして、言われた、「ごらんなさい、ここにわたしの母、わたしの兄弟がいる。35神のみこころを行う者はだれでも、わたしの兄弟、また姉妹、また母なのである」（マルコ３章３１節ー３５節）。
このイエスの言葉はマリアにとっては酷な言葉であったと思います。突然、この言葉を聞いたなら彼女は母として心を痛めたことでしょう。しかし、彼女は思いめぐらし、心にとどめることを知っていた人です。故にカナの婚礼においてはイエス様に対する信頼がありました。ですから、このような言葉をイエスが言われても、この度も彼女はアップセットすることなく、その言葉を心に留めたことでしょう。そうです、あの時と同じように一つ一つ宝を蓄えるかのように。彼女の心には既にこのようなイエスの言葉を受け止める下地ができあがっていたのです。
私達は時に思いがけない言葉を投げかけられることがないでしょうか。想定外の事に直面して言葉を失ったり、アップセットしてしまうことはないでしょうか。その時に私達をそのところから引きあげてくれる力は、それまでの間、どれだけそのことに対して、主と共に思いめぐらす時間を持っていたか、どれだけ主の言葉を心に留めていたかというところからくるのです。
私達には思いめぐらす時間がありますでしょうか。その時間を作っているでしょうか。その人について、神様のご計画や御心について思いめぐらすことなく、忙しなく行動していることがありませんか。その出来事がある日、突然不意に自分に襲いかかってきたかのように、驚き怪しんでいませんでしょうか。イエス様はなぜあの忙しく動き回っているマルタに「あなたは多くのことに心を配って思い煩っている。しかし、なくてならぬものは多くはない。いや、ひとつだけである」（ルカ１０章４１節）と言われ、主イエスの前にとどまり、その御声に耳を傾けるマリヤ（このマリヤはイエスの母とは別人です）の姿勢を評価したのでしょうか。
後にこのマリヤだけがイエス様の死を予期し、その葬りの備えのためにイエス様の足に高価なナルドの香油を塗ったのをご存知でしょうか（ヨハネ１２章１節‐８節）。そのように彼女だけが最も大切なことに対して備えをすることができたのは、彼女が思いめぐらす人、心に留める人であったゆえであったということを否定することはできませんでしょう。
主にある皆さん、神様について、家族について、教会について思いめぐらす時がありますか。それらを宝のようにして心に蓄えていますか。このマリヤの心はやがて来る、あの日への備えとなるのです。
十字架
今日、ここまでお話ししてきましたことは聖書が記録しているイエス・キリストとマリヤに関係する数少ない出来事です。言うまでもなく聖書には記されていない３０年にもおよぶイエスとマリヤの日常というものがあったでしょう。その年月を経て、そのイエスは母マリアの面前で十字架にかかっているのです。
25さて、イエスの十字架のそばにはイエスの母と、母の姉妹と、クロパの妻マリヤと、マグダラのマリヤとが、たたずんでいた。26イエスは、その母と愛弟子とがそばに立っているのをごらんになって母にいわれた、「婦人よ、ごらんなさい。これはあなたの子です」。27それからこの弟子に言われた、「ごらんなさい。これはあなたの母です」。そのとき以来、この弟子はイエスの母を自分の家に引きとった。（ヨハネ１９章２５節―２７節）
かつて出産後八日になるイエス様をエルサレムの神殿境内で見たシメオンに言われた言葉が心に思い起こされます。まさしくその通りになりました。
「ごらんなさい、この幼な子は、イスラエルの多くの人を倒れさせたり立ちあがらせたりするために、また反対を受けるしるしとして、定められています。35そして、あなた自身もつるぎで胸を刺し貫かれるでしょう。―それは多くの人の心にある思いが、現れるようになるためです」。（ルカ２章３４節－３５節）
マリヤのことですからこのシメオンの言葉も彼女は心に留めていたことでしょう。まさしく、その言葉通りに彼女は自分の胸がつるぎで刺し貫かれるような思いでそこにいたことでしょう。
マリヤにとってこの光景はまさしく我が子が目の前で血を流して死んでいく光景です。しかし、天の視点からこの十字架のイエスを見れば、自分に残された呼吸の数があとわずかとなった時、アダムによって地に堕ちた人間の罪の問題に対して、その解決が成し遂げられようとしていた時でもありました。そうです、その時とは父なる神がイエスの呼吸が次第に弱くなりつつも手を差し伸べることなく沈黙を保たれた時であり、神に仕えていた御使い達がこぞって、そのイエスの姿に注視している時でした。そして、その時、イエス様は過去と現在、そして未来にいたるまで一望できるような中におりながら、その御目は自分の足元にいる母マリヤに向けられたのです。
言うまでもなく、十字架は母と子の悲しみということがその中心にあるテーマではありません。しかし、まさしく人間の歴史が二分される、そのような時にイエス・キリストは足元にいる母マリアへの思いを忘れることがなかったのです。そうです、いつも自分のことを思い、自分の言動を父なる神の御心と共に思いめぐらしていた人への想いです。
このマリヤとイエスの間に私達は多くのことを教えられます。マリヤは神様がイエスを自分に授けてくださった、もっと言いますと神の御心を成すために自分に預けられたわが子を受け止め、そのわが子を神様はどのように導かれるのかということを思いめぐらし、ただ神様の御心がなされるようにと願い、祈り続けました。そうです、それは授かった子を育て、神にお返しするということです。そして、イエス様もその母の思いを受け止め、ご自身が父なる神様から示されていることを一つ一つ、成し遂げていかれ今、十字架に磔にされているのです。
私達はイエスとマリヤが共に過ごした年月の詳細を知りません。その年月は彼らだけが知り、彼らだけが互いに神様の前に思いめぐらし、心に留めた年月でありました。そして、その父なる神様を介入して心に留めたものの上に、この十字架があり、その十字架の上から母に語りかけたイエスの言葉があるのです。
この後、イエスは息絶え、十字架から取り降ろされ、墓に葬られます。しかし、三日後にキリストは甦り、弟子達やこの母マリアの前に４０日のの間、その姿をあらわし、天にかえります。その時の様子を使徒行伝はこう記しています。
9こう言い終ると、イエスは彼らの見ている前で天に上げられ、雲に迎えられて、その姿が見えなくなった。10イエスの上って行かれるとき、彼らが天を見つめていると、見よ、白い衣を着たふたりの人が、彼らのそばに立っていて11言った、「ガリラヤの人たちよ、なぜ天を仰いで立っているのか。あなたがたを離れて天に上げられたこのイエスは、天に上って行かれるのをあなたがたが見たのと同じ有様で、またおいでになるであろう」。12それから彼らは、オリブという山を下ってエルサレムに帰った。この山はエルサレムに近く、安息日に許されている距離のところにある。13彼らは、市内に行って、その泊まっていた屋上の間にあがった。その人たちは、ペテロ、ヨハネ、ヤコブ、アンデレ、ピリポとトマス、バルトロマイとマタイ、アルパヨの子ヤコブと熱心党のシモンとヤコブの子ユダとであった。14彼らはみな、婦人たち、特にイエスの母マリヤ、およびイエスの兄弟たちと共に、心を合わせて、ひたすら祈をしていた。(使徒行伝1章９節‐１４節)
イエスを我が子であると同時に、神に委ねられている子であるということを思いめぐらしたマリヤは今、我が子イエスとしてではなく、神の子イエスとしてエルサレムにて祈っているのです。彼女がそこで共に祈っていた者達に対して、マリヤはあの時、イエスが言われ、大切に心に留めたあの言葉を、宝を掘り起こすかのようにして、繰り返し、思ったことでしょう。
「ごらんなさい、ここにわたしの母、わたしの兄弟がいる。35神のみこころを行う者はだれでも、わたしの兄弟、また姉妹、また母なのである」（ヨハネ１９章２７節）
イエスがマリヤの子であり、マリヤがイエスの母であったということは打ち消すことのできない事実です。彼らの間にはその母と子としてのリスペクトと愛がありました。しかし、同時に彼らが互いに最も大切なこととしたのは、父なる神にあって各々の使命に生きるということだったのです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、子は神様が親に授けた者です。もっと言いますのなら親に託された者です。もし、そのことに納得するのであるのなら、親は子を与えてくださったお方がその子に与えておられる使命に生きることができるようにと見守り、祈り、時に自身の願望が心にあっても、神がその子に持っている御心を思いめぐらし、大切に心に留めるべきでありましょう。
全く同じことが子にも言えましょう。親は神様が子に与えてくれたかけがえのない存在です。親に子が託されたように、親は神様が子に委ねてくださった存在でありましょう。もし、そのことに納得するのであるのなら、子は親を与えてくださった方が、その親に与えられている使命に生きることができるようにと見守り、祈り、時に自身の願望が心にあっても、神がその親に持っている御心を思いめぐらし、大切に心に留めるべきでありましょう。
そして、万物の法則が入れ替わるような時に、母に目を注がれたイエス様のように、いかなる時にも私達を育ててくれた親への思いを忘れてはなりません。ご自身、もはやその親を抱きしめることができないような状況におりながらも、その時にイエス様が十字架の上でできる最善をマリアになされたように、私達も置かれている状況で、できうる限りのことをするようにと私達は十字架のイエスから教えていただくのです。
お祈りしましょう。
The heart of Jesus and Mary

When Jesus Christ was crucified, he spoke 7 times while on the cross. The first three passages were spoken for the people, while the remaining four times were for him.
We already talked about the first of these passages, they were praying for the pardon of those who crucified Jesus, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) We also talked about his second passage, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43) These words were spoken to the criminals who were crucified alongside Jesus. Then it is his third spoken passage that I will talk about today.
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, [b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. (John 19:25~27)
In this moment, the people who were around Jesus’s cross standing on the hill of Golgotha in Jerusalem were indifferent, ridiculing, ignorant, and brutal. However there were four ladies, one of whom was Mary the mother of Jesus, her sister, and Mary the wife of Clopas, Mary Magdalene, and the youngest of the twelve disciples of Jesus, John.
The child who came from her flesh was laid on the rough lumber, and then as both his hands and his feet was just about to be nailed, we wonder, how Mary felt at this moment. No one felt either sorrow or even tried to save her child, she must have felt so powerless, but still she remained at the scene. Can you guess how much she suffered? Most mothers would have lost their minds. We wonder what was going through Mary’s mind at this moment. She might have been recalling her life with her son, Jesus.
The Annunciation
In Japan there is a children’s song, “Akatombo” meaning the “Red Dragonfly”. There is one phrase in the lyrics that goes “When my sister was 15, she left home to get married.” Young girls about 15 need to have plenty of education in this present time. However, most girls back then had arranged marriages. They were to become the breadwinners for their new families that they had married into. They would work from morning till night. I assume Joseph and Mary’s marriage had been arranged by their parents when Mary was still 15 or 16 years old. Suppose Mary gave birth to Jesus when she was 16. She would be around 50 when Jesus was crucified. Nowaday people in their 50’s are still productive at that age; however, it was close to one’s closing year in those days. This Mary was the one and only woman who existed on this earth to have conceived the Messiah in her womb. For her, the announcement day had come all too suddenly.
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. (Luke 1:26~29)
Mary was told by an angel “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” When she heard these words she was greatly troubled and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
Everyone, what would happen if this event happened in our time? What if this announcement came to you? I have a good guess. At first we would sit in front of our computers and google about paranormal phenomenons, optical illusions, and auditory hallucinations. Then we would seek counselors and look for advice from friends and family.
Brothers and sisters, even if these events were less significant, when you face these happenings, do you wonder of God’s purpose behind them?
Sometimes God leads us to next story by confronting us with unexpected things. After this announcement from the angel, Mary bore Jesus, and for a little while the bible does not talk about this mother and child. The next time when this family comes up in the bible, is when they go to the temple courts in Jerusalem.
Visiting Temple in Jerusalem
When Jesus became 12 years old the family goes on pilgrimage to Jerusalem on Passover. After finishing the pilgrimage they set off for their home, however after one day of their trip they realize Jesus is absent so Joseph and Mary returned to Jerusalem. Because it was Passover, there were so many pilgrims that were walking along side with them and Joseph had taken his pupils along, so this is what delayed them from noticing Jesus’s absence. When they return to Jerusalem…..
46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[f] 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
This conversation between Mary and Jesus was not a typical conversation between an ordinary parent and child. Before we go home after church my wife and I check every single room in this building to search for our children every Sunday. What would it be like if we found our children discussing theology among the elder believers at our church? Then we tell them as we always do “Get ready we are heading home.” And then our children’s response was like this: “Why were you searching for us, didn’t you know we had to be in our Father’s house?”
Here the bible said Joseph and Mary didn’t understand what Jesus was saying to them. Even so Jesus’s mother, Mary kept all these things in mind. As I mentioned before, when Mary had heard angel’s greeting and the Annunciation, she pondered, but furthermore, at this time she kept all these things in mind. The original bible verse said “But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.” Yes, she valued these things as stored treasures and kept them in her heart.
What was it she kept in her heart so preciously? What did she wonder and cherish so much? She knew God was with her son, and she wondered how God would lead him from now on. Without interfering with Gods intention, she would stop correcting him, but looked over Jesus’s words and deeds and reserved them all within her heart.
The reason is because she knew Jesus was a child who was given by God. This was not only for Mary but is essentially for all of parents. No one person can have their own child by themselves. Even nonbelievers would say things like “this child was given to me” if they were to be put in a situation like that. Why? I guess somewhere within our soul it is engraved with the idea that the lives are given by a great existence beyond ourselves. Yes that’s right; there is an existence that gives us these children. Mary realized that this greater existence was pointing to her child and said that she should not to step into this area where the existence had great plans with this child and that is why she wondered and kept these things close within her heart.
Brothers and Sisters, when something happens, do you face those happenings, do you keep them in your mind? Do you hold on to these happening and do you seek God purpose in them? Like Mary did so, considering God’s action with our children. Do we cherish them within our heart and wonder?
Joseph who is Mary’s husband didn’t appear after this event in the bible. It is unlikely that Joseph’s name wouldn’t appear, when we consider that in those days the family structure had the father as the center of the household; according to many scholars Joseph might have passed away for some reason. If so, Jesus was raised by only his mother, Mary, and he grew up obeying and serving his mother. Luke 2 closed with this verse 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. (Luke 2:52) With this the child Jesus and his mother do not appear in the bible for a while. The next time when Jesus and Mary appear in the bible it is the scene of the wedding at Cana in Galilee after Jesus becomes an adult.
A wedding at Cana
“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Mary trusted Jesus completely because she had kept all of that wonder and stored treasure in her heart even before Jesus was born. Therefore she told the servants “Do whatever he tells you.” Then after that Jesus made his mighty work changing water into wine to prove worthy of her trust. John wrote that this was the first of the signs through which he would reveal his glory. Jesus’s miracle was in response to his mother’s trust in Jesus; this trust had come from her watching over Jesus from birth till now. Within this time she could see Gods work within Him. When we seek God’s will and have room within our hearts to allow Him to work this creates faith within us.
Brothers and Sisters, when you face any happenings, do you have such trust in God? Mary obtained this faith through her life and was always conscious of God’s influence and was always seeking God’s will.
After the wedding at Cana Jesus taught and started to show wondrous signs in many different places. In these times there was an event.
Family of God
31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” 33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. 34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:31~35)
I thought that Jesus’s words were a little harsh on her. If she heard these words without any thought, she might feel troubled as a mother. However, she was a person who knew of these wondrous things and had kept them within her heart. That is why she had a strong trust with him at the wedding in Cana. Therefore I believe that even when she heard these words from Jesus she did not get upset, because of the things she kept within her heart. Yes, as before, she preserved these treasures, one by one. There was a base already built up in her to accept such words from Jesus.
Do you sometimes get unexpected words thrown at you by someone? Leaving you speechless or making you upset when you confront some unexpected difficulty. The power that can save us from such difficulties is depending on how much time you had spent with God’s wonders, seeking his will, and how much you keep his words in your mind.
Do you have enough time to wonder about God’s intention? Do you consciously make the time? Do you have such a busy life that you can’t even stop and wonder what God’s plan is and what his will is? When something happens do we not get shocked and hold a suspicion, as if it was an attack on us, suddenly and unexpectedly? Why did Jesus speak to Marcia who was so busy working, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.” (Luke10:41), and then he valued Mary’s attitude more, (This Mary was not Jesus’s mother) who was sitting beside Jesus listening to what he said. Later on this Mary could foresee Jesus’s death and preparing for his burial she poured valuable perfume of nard on Jesus’ feet. Did you take notice of this? (John 12：1～8) From these stories we can find the reason why only she could prepare for the most significant event, because she was a person who held the wonder of God’s will and stored them within her heart.
Brothers and Sisters, are there occasions when you wonder about God, family, and church? Do you store these thoughts and feelings in your heart as you store treasures? In this Mary’s heart she was preparing for His final day.
The Cross
Today, so far we’ve looked over a few events related to Jesus Christ and Mary in the Bible. Needless to say there should be over 30 years of Jesus and Mary’s daily life that is not recorded in it. After spending all these years together, Jesus was crucified in front of Mary.
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, [b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. (John 19:25~27)
We recall the words of Simeon to Mary; this was when Simeon saw Jesus, just 8 days after his birth at the temple in Jerusalem. It became just as he said.
34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Luke2:34~35)
As we know Mary, we can expect that she also kept Simeon’s words in her heart. Precisely as he had said she was there feeling the pain of her heart as if were pierced by a sword.
For Mary this sight was exactly as it looked, her own child was bleeding and dying right in front of her eyes. However from the point of view of heaven, as Jesus’s breath was slowing down, it was about the time for the denouncement of sins of humans which were brought about by Adam. That’s right; all this time our Father God maintained his silence without reaching out with his mighty hand, even as Jesus’s breathing was diminishing. At that time the angels, who were serving God, were all observing Jesus’s state. The moment Jesus was in this state he could over look the past, present, and future, yet, he turned his eye toward Mary beside his feet.
As we all know, the main point of the crucifixion is not the sorrow of a mother and a son. However, even in this moment, when human history was about to be split into two. Jesus Christ cherished his mother who was beside him. This cherish was for a person who was always thinking about him, who always consider his words and deeds, that he was acting on our Father Gods will.
We could learn a lot of things from what happened in between Mary and Jesus. Mary wondered about the fact that God gave Jesus to her as her child; moreover, she accepted the fact that God gave her the child to accomplish His will and she wondered how God would lead her son. Wishing for the accomplishment of God’s will she would keep praying. Yes, she raised her given child and now she returns him to God. Jesus who had received his mother’s heart, completed Gods plan one thing at a time, and now, Jesus is on the cross to be crucified.
We don’t know all the detail of Jesus and Mary and all the years that they spent together, only they can tell. In all those years they must have wondered about the presence of God with their lives and accepted it in their hearts. It is because of this acceptance that they understood the will of God and the coming of this crucifixion. His final words to his mother were all based on this.
After Jesus breathed his last breath, He was taken down from the cross and buried. Yet, three day later Christ was resurrected. He showed himself to his disciples and his mother, Mary, and after 40 days He returned to Heaven. This scene was described in book of acts.
9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” 12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. (Act 1:9~14)
Mary, who wondered and accepted that Jesus was the child who was entrusted to her by God and was her own child as well, is now praying to Jesus who is God’s son and no longer her own child from Jerusalem. I believe that she recalled what Jesus had said to her and would repeatedly think about his’s words towards the people who were praying with her. For Mary these words were stored, preciously, within her heart.
27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. (John 19:27)
Jesus was Mary’s son and Mary was Jesus’s mother, this is a fact that no one can deny. There was respect and Love, of a mother and child between them. However at the same time what they valued the most was living for Gods mission.
Brothers and Sisters, children are what God gives to parents. What’s more, God entrusts these children to parents. If you understand this, you parents should watch over and pray that your children can live for their mission that God has given them, just as he given parents to the children. Even if we have our personal wishes in our heart, we must consider God’s work within the children, and keep them in your heart.
The same thing can be said to children. Parents are what God have given to children and they are an irreplaceable existence for us. As God entrusts children to parents, parents are an existence that God has given to the Children. If you understand this, you children should wish to watch over and pray that your parents can live for their mission that God has given them, just as he has given children to the parent’s. Even if we have our personal wishes in our heart, we must consider God’s work within the parents, and keep them in your heart.
We should not forget the thoughts of our parents who raised us at any time, like Jesus showed us with his mother. Even though the veil between this world and heaven was being lifted Jesus looked at his mother. Jesus taught us that we should also do our best for our parents in any circumstance, just like Jesus himself did his best for Mary while he was on the Cross, in such a circumstance where he could no longer embrace his mother in his arms.Let us pray.
