ノア：地道に主に従う

創世記８章１節―２２節
私は釣りが好きで、これまで何度か船で釣りにでかけたことがあります。大抵は半日ほどのトリップでラホヤ沖で糸を垂れました。かつては船酔いをしていたのですが、最近は薬を飲んだり、船酔い止めのバンドを手につけたりしているので、ほとんど船酔いをしなくなりました。しかし、これが何日もの航海となったり、大荒れの海となるときっと激しい船酔いに襲われると思います。今日、お話しますノアもその時、自らが作った巨大な船の中にいました。
彼が家族と共に箱舟に乗り込んだことには経緯があります。創世記６章は「時に世は神の前に乱れて、暴虐が地に満ちた」（創世記６章１１節）と記しています。そうです、そこで神様はこの地を一度、「ノアの洪水」と呼ばれる大洪水により滅ぼします。しかし、その中にノアとよばれる正しく、全き人、神と共に歩んだ人がおり（創世記６章９節）、彼とその家族が神様より箱舟を造るようにと命じられます。
その時、世界は乱れ、暴虐で満ちました。まだ法律もなく、人の悪を取り締まるものもない時代です。この混乱と暴虐というのは人間が本能のままに生きるとどうなるのかということを如実にあらわしています。
彼らはそのようなところから救われて箱舟に入りました。そのような意味で彼らは最悪の状況、試みの場所に暮らしていましたが、洪水を逃れることができたということは幸いでありました。しかし、洪水を逃れるためになすべきことを考えますと、それはまた彼らにとって試みの日々でもありました。このようなことは彼らに限ったことでははく、私達も幸いな時と試みの時が交錯するような毎日を生きています。今朝、私達はこのノアの姿をとおして、このような日々を送る私達に必要な天来の知恵と導きを得たいと願っております。
ノアと家族は見渡す限り水に囲まれた世界にいました。四十日四十夜、止むことなく雨が降り続けたからです。言うまでもなく船にはレーダーもなく、ただ流されるまま、ノアは自分を含め八人の家族と共にその時を過ごしました。さらにそこにはおびただしい数のつがいの動物がおりました。
そして、来る日も来る日も降り続いた雨が、ついに止んだのです。創世記８章は「神はノアと、箱舟の中にいたすべての生き物と、すべての家畜とを心にとめられた。神が風を地の上に吹かせられたので、水は退いた。また淵の源と、天の窓とは閉ざされて、天から雨が降らなくなった」（創世記８章１節－２節）と記しています。しかしこの水は後、１５０日もの間、地上にみなぎり（創世記７章２４節）、その１５０日がたった時にやっと水が減り始めました（創世記８章３節）。
私達は日本の梅雨を知っていますね。最近はゲリラ雨なる集中豪雨があり、それにより川が氾濫したり、家々が水に浸かってしまうことがよくあります。しかし、これらの雨にしましても、それは２４時間、降り続けたというようなものではなく、数時間の集中的な豪雨によって起きているのです。そう考えますとノアの時の雨というのは４０日 ４０夜、降り続けたというのですから私達の想像がおよばない事態となっていたはずです。その水の量たるや、降りやんでから後、五か月もの間、その水は地上を覆い尽くしていたというのです。雨が降り始めてから、船に乗り込んだ時のことから考えますと、その時点で彼らは六か月と１０日、水の上にいたということになります。
サンデイェゴ・ベイに行きますと大きなクルージング船が停泊していることがあります。あれでメキシコクルーズに行くのでしょう。船の中には映画館あり、ダンスホールあり、エステあり、プールありと至れり尽くせりということを聞きますが、きっとそれは日常とは違う、快適な船旅なのでしょう。
しかし、想像してみてください。ノアの場合は、船がどこに向かっているのかも分からず、もてあそばれる木の葉のように水の上を漂い続けていることを。クルージングなら連日のバフェとパーティと外に広がるマリンブルーの空と海、心地よい風に吹かれながらの日光浴、日夜繰り広げられるコンサートやダンスながありますでしょう。しかし、ノアとその家族がいた環境というのはキーキー、モーモー、ニャンニャンという動物たちの泣き声、叫び声、雄叫び、そして、それに伴い、彼らの食事と排泄の世話、もしかしたら、その期間に出産する動物もいたかもしれませんし、ノアとその家族は朝から晩まで、とてつもない匂いと騒ぎの只中に身を置き、やすむ間もなく重労働に明け暮れていたことでしょう。人間にはリラックスする時間とか、自分だけのスペースが必要です。
この忙しく、狭い、箱舟の中で過ごしていた彼らの心と体の状態はいかなるものだったのでしょうか。もしかしたらこのような過酷な環境にいたために、家族の中に既に色々な問題が生じていたかもしれません。心がストレスで満ちてきますと、いつもは簡単に受け入れたり、許せることも、それができなくなります。彼らが閉じ込められていた環境はまさしく私達の想像を超えるものであり、そんな生活を何ヶ月もしていた彼らにとって、毎日毎日、降りしきる雨と見渡す限りの水の世界を見て思うことは何だったのでしょうか。そうです、言うまでもありません、それは「一日も早く、ここから出たい！」ということだったことでしょう。
この心理は私たちにもよく分かるのです。雨が何日も降り続いて止んだら、普通は外に出たくなるものです。梅雨の合間に、太陽が出ると洗濯はしたくなるし、買い物にも行きたくなりますでしょう。（こう思いをサンディエゴでもつことはまず、ありませんが）彼らもそう思ったに違いない。しかし、彼らが経験した雨はちょっとやそっとの雨ではありませんでした。外に出るにも、外は一面の水、水、水。海の只中にいるような光景がそこにはあったのだろう。彼らは水がなくなるまで待たなければならなかったのだ。
さて、そのような中でこの家長であったノアは何をしていたのでしょうか。創世記８章４節によりますと水が引き始めてから「箱舟は７月１７日にアララテの山にとどまり １０月１日には、山々の頂が現われた」とノアは自分達の置かれている場所を観察し、日づけをつけて、それを記録しています。さらに６、７節を見ると、それからさらに ４０日たって、すなわち１１月１１日に外の世界を知るためにノアは偵察としてカラスを放ったのです。
この過酷な環境の中にありながら、すなわち試みの中にあるノアの姿から私達は知恵を得ます。ある意味、ノアが置かれていた状況というのは精神的にも限界に近いような状態だったと思われます。彼は家族のリーダーとして家族の心にも向き合い、それを一つにしなければならないということを経験したでしょう。時に己の願望を封印して、家族を支えなければならないということもあったでしょう。そのようなことを思えば、ノアこそがまずこの状況の中、破れてしまってもおかしくない状況です。
しかし、彼は日々の記録を取り続け、偵察をし続けました。心身ともにしんどい状況になりますと私達はこのような地道なことを丁寧にし続けることが億劫になり、諸々のことが雑になるものです。しかし、彼はその試みの期間にあっても日々、自分がなすべきことをし続けました。試みの時、もういいやと思われるような時、そのような時だからこそ、私達がどうあるべきかということをノアは私達に語りかけていないでしょうか。
彼はカラスと共に鳩も偵察にだしていました。そして、ある時、２度目に放った鳩がオリブの若葉をくわえて帰ってきたと創世記は記しています（創世記８章１１節）。それを見、ノアは「ノアは地から水がひいたのを知った」のです。それから、さらに七日待ってまた、鳩を放ったところ、もはや彼のもとには帰って来なかった（創世記８章１２節）。それは鳩が生活することができるほどの大地示していました。つまり、彼の細かな観察と記録によると、彼はいよいよ待ち望んだ箱舟の戸を開けることができる時にいたったのです。ノアも家族も寝ても覚めても待ち望んだ日がいよいよ来たのです。
そして、その時からさらに一か月がたった１月１日、彼らは地の上の水はかれ、土のおもてはかわいているということを知るのです（創世記８章１３節）。しかし、彼らはそれでも箱舟から出ることをしませんでした。彼とその家族が箱舟から出たのは、さらにそれから２ヶ月をへた２月２７日になってからであったと創世記は記しているのです。つまり、外に出て立ちうる大地が眼下にあることを確認しながらも、さらに彼らは船の中に計３ヶ月いたのです（創世記８章１４節）。
皆さん、聖書には淡々とこのノアの記録した日付けが記録されていますが、半年以上、水の上に漂った者達の眼下には既に地表があらわれており、いつでもその上に立つことができる環境にいながら、彼らは三か月、箱舟から出なかったのです。この背後にはやはりノアのリーダーシップがあったことでしょう。ノアが家族にそれを許さなかったのでしょう。
ではノアはいつ箱舟から出る時と自ら定めていたのでしょうか。大地が全く乾いているということを確認しました２月２７日に彼は神様の語りかけを聞きます。『この時、神はノアに言われた、「あなたは妻と、子らと、子らの妻たちと共に箱舟を出なさい・・・・」（創世記８章１６節）。この言葉を聞いてノアとその家族をはじめ、「すべての獣、すべての這うもの、すべての鳥、すべて地の上に動くものは皆、種類にしたがって箱舟を出た」（創世記８章１９節）というのです。
皆さん、私たちの人生の選択はどのようになされるのでしょうか。自分の念入りな観察と調査と勤勉さが裏打ちされて、私たちは１歩を踏み出します。私達の決断を裏付けるためにこれらの観察と調査を私達はし続けるのです。私達はノアがそうしているのも、彼がいつ船から出るのかということを自ら決めるための備えだと思っておりました。しかし、ノアはそれらの地道なデーターを参考にしつつも、最後の決断のために神様の導きをひたすら待っていたのです。目の前には自分でしうる日々の勤勉があり、それにプラスして神様のゴーサインをノアは待っていたのです。
数週間前にイエス・キリストは私達の牧者であり、私達はイエスの後をついていく羊であるということをお話ししましたが、覚えていらっしゃいますか。ノアがここでなしたことは、まさしく彼の牧者を追い越さずに、牧者がとどまっている限り、そこに彼もとどまったということです。彼は彼の牧者が「それではそろそろ行こうか」と腰を上げた時を待ち続けていたのです。
詩篇２３篇は主は私達の牧者であり、彼は私達を緑の牧場、憩の水際に導かれると書いております。私達は自分で前方にある緑の牧場や水際のことを思い、入念に計画します。しかし、はたして思い描いてるその場所に本当に緑の牧場があるのか、憩いの水際があるのか分からないのです。そこに行ってみたらまだ草は生えていなかった、水は枯れていたというようなことがあるのです。しかし、牧者はそれらを知り尽くしており、私達の先頭に立つのです。
皆さん、ノアが送りだした鳩がオリブの若葉を加えた姿は今日、平和のシンボルとなっていますでしょう。その一枚のオリブの若葉の緑はノアと家族にとってどんなに大きな喜びであり、希望となったことでしょうか。それは、彼が勤勉に調査、観察したからこそ得られた、試みの中の光であったことでしょう。そのような希望を神様は私達の試みの中にも見せてくれるに違いありません。そして、同時にノアはこのオリブの若葉から未だ彼が見ることがない草木が生え始めた大地を想像し、そのところに既にはたらかれている神様のみわざにも思いを寄せ、自分の力を超えて働かれているその神様への従順を心に刻んだに違いありません。
この若葉をにぎっても外に飛び出ないノア。静かに窓を閉め、再び暗い船室の中に座るノア。着々とみわざを進めたもう神のしるしを手にして、黙々と彼は神のみ言葉を待ったのです。
思い起こせばこの大地に雨が降り始めて、この箱舟がいよいよ大地から浮き上がったあの時、この箱舟の戸を閉められたのは神様だったのです（創世記７章１６節）。主がその初めに戸を閉じられた以上、主がその戸を新たに開くのでなければ、自分でそれはこじ開けるべきではないと彼は思ったのです。彼の行動を最終的に決定するのは、自分の観察結果ではない、調査結果でもない、神様のみ言葉だったのです。
私たちの人生、そこで直面する選択の中でこの神の言葉に聴従するものでありたいものです。主は我らの羊飼い、私達は羊です。羊は羊飼いを目で追うのではなくて、羊飼いの声を聞いて従うのです。私たちが神を信じるということは、そういうことです。自分の生涯に、自分で採算をとって歩む時に、私たちは壁にぶつかるでしょう。しかし、神の言葉に従う時に、その歩みは堅固なものとなるでしょう。
この章の最後に聖書は、箱舟から出てまずノアがしたことを記しています。想像してみてください、皆さんがこの箱舟に半年以上も閉じこもっていて、いつも揺れる世界に、動物との共同生活をし、もろもろの責務から解かれて、大地に踏み出すことができるとしたら、何をしますか。私達は無礼講で、祝宴をもよおして大騒ぎするのではないでしょうか。それもいいでしょう、しかし、その時ノアは何をしたのでしょうか。
『ノアは主に祭壇を築いて、すべての清い獣と、すべての清い鳥とのうちから取って、燔祭を祭壇の上にささげた』（創世記８章２０節）。彼は箱舟から出るとまず、主に祭壇を築いて、すべての清い獣と、すべての清い鳥とのうちから、はん祭を祭壇に捧げたというのです。はん祭とは、その捧げものを焼き尽くすやり方です。全てを焼き尽くすということは、ノアの全き献身を意味しました。
この国で毎年、お祝いされることにサンクスギヴィングがあります。そして、このノアの家族の姿をこの国の建国の時に思うのです。１６２０年、オランダから子供を含めた１０２名のピリグラム・ファザーと呼ばれる一行が信仰の自由をもとめて メイフラワー号に乗り、新天地に向かいました。困難な航海の末にアメリカ東海岸、プリマウス湾に錨を下ろしました。それまでの長い長い大西洋の航海に疲れ果てていた彼らにとって、久し振りに見る緑に溢れた陸地はノア同様に魅力的であったに違いありません。ノアの家族と全く同じ心境でしょう。しかし、彼らは空腹と疲れにもかかわらず、土曜日の到着から三日たった月曜の午前までは陸地に足を踏み入れることはしませんでした。そして、彼らがなしたこと、それは船上で神への感謝の礼拝を捧げたのです。
この国にやってきた人達はノアのなしたことに従うかのように、この国にやってきて、そしてこの国の大地を踏むことができたことをまず神様に感謝したのです。この国がそのように始まったのであるのなら、私達は未来永劫、この始まりに従うべきではないでしょうか。それは大きな国の話だけではない。私達の人生においても、私達の命の始まりが神と共にあり、そのようにして私達の人生の扉が開かれたのであるのなら、私達の人生の扉が神によって閉じられるまで、私達は日々なすべきことを真実にし続け、牧者なるイエス・キリストの後をついていくのです。イエス様が止まる時に、私達もとどまり、イエス様が立ち上がり、前に進む時に私達もその後に従うのです。お祈りしましょう。

As many of you know, I love fishing. I have been to fishing trips to the coast of La Jolla in the past. I have been sea sick a couple of times, but after I use medicine and a sea sick prevention wrist band, I do not get sea sick anymore. But if I go to fishing trip for a couple of days or in a storm, I am sure I will get sick. I am going to share the story of Noah today, and when he was in the ark.
There is a background behind the story of the Ark. According to Genesis 6, “11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.” .Yes, God decided to destroy the earth by the Flood, but among the corruption, Noah who lived with God was commanded by God to make an Ark with his family (Genesis 6:9).
The earth was full of corruption and violence at that time. There was no law and enforcement that prevented crime (actually there is no “crime” because they do not have the law). The corruption shows our human nature, but Noah and his family were saved in this situation. They lived in the midst of the worst place but it was good for them to be saved from such a crucial situation.
They were saved in the Ark, which was a great thing in their situation, but when we think about their days in the Ark, it was still a big challenge for them. It is not only their situation, but we are also living in the mix of good and bad. We would like to hear the heavenly wisdom and guidance by seeing the life of Noah this morning.
Noah and his family were totally surrendered to water because it was raining for forty days and forty nights. Of course, there was no radar, and they were just floating wherever the wind and wave led directed them to. Noah and his eight family members spent many days in the Ark. And in the Ark, there were also many animals.
It had rained many days and nights, but the rain finally stopped. Genesis 8:1 said “But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded” 2 Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. (Genesis 8:1). But after this, the rain begins again, and remains raining (Genesis 7:24), and finally after 150 more days, the rain begins to decrease (Genesis 8:3)
We know the rain season in Japan. Recently, there have been Guerrilla Rainstorms, which make rivers overflow and many houses flood. But the rain does not continue for 24 hours. It is only continue a couple of hours. So it is unbelievable to see constant rain for forty days and forty nights. The rain covered every land, and the water covered the Earth for five months. This is beyond our imagination, Noah and his family were on the water for six months and ten days.
When we go to SD bay, we see the huge cruising ship. I believe they have cruises going to Mexico. There is a Movie Theater, dance hall’s, a spa and pool in that ship. The cruising must be very comfortable.
Can you imagine Noah was on the boat with no direction? They were just like a floating leaf on the ocean. It may have been nice if they are on a cruise ship, with a buffet, party, concert and maybe dance hall in the ship, but the situation Noah and his family was facing is hearing the cry of animals, and also they had to prepare their daily meal and they had to clean up. Maybe some animals delivered a baby during that time. Noah and his family stayed in the odor and noise. They kept working hard without rest every day, but we know we need time for relaxation and privacy.
What was their condition in the Ark? They might have trouble in the family. If our heart is full of stress, it is difficult to forgive and accept. Their situation is beyond our imagination. What are they thinking in the Ark by seeing rain and storm every day. They are also seeing various animals every day. Yes, they must always think “We want to get out from here”.
We understand how they feel. We want to go outside when it rains for many days. We want to wash clothes (I have to explain this, we dry our clothes in the sun in Japan), and want to go shopping in the clear sky. But the water was all over the place at that time. They are floating on the vast water. They have to wait untill the water is gone.
In such a situation, what was Noah doing as a leader of his family? According to Genesis 8:4, after the water was gone, 4 and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat (Genesis 8:4). Noah observed that and recorded the situation, and also verse 6, 7 said they sent out a raven on Nov 11 to find out about the world outside.
We will get wisdom from Noah who is in the midst of hardship. Noah must put himself in tough situation and must be a big challenge to him. He must face each one of his family’s needs and unite them together. He had to be tolerant and patient to support his family. When we think about the situation he was placed, we think he might burn out.
But he keeps record every day and always watches the situation. We know it is hard to do this, when we are in a tough situation, but Noah kept doing what he should to do. Noah is encouraging us what we should do in our hardship.
Noah also sent a dove for reconnaissance, and when Noah sent a dove for the second time, the dove brought a freshly plucked olive leaf! (Genesis 8:11), and Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him. (Genesis 8:12). That was a sign of the land where the dove can live. Namely, according to his watching and records, it is time when he can open the door of the Ark. That is the day Noah and his family had been waiting for since the first day of rain.
And after one more month on January 1, they found that land was dry (Genesis 8:13), but they still stayed in the Ark. Noah and his family came out from the Ark after two months, on Feb 27, as it is written in Genesis. Even though they knew there was land before them, they still remained in the Ark for totally three months.
Dear brothers and sisters, Noah kept records and he knew there is land before him for three months, but they did not come out from the Ark. That must have been from the leadership of Noah. He did not let his family go out.
Then, when did Noah decide to come out from the Ark? He observed that the land was dry and heard the voice from God on Feb 27,”Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives”(Genesis 8:16), then Noah, his family and “All the animals and all the creatures that move along the ground and all the birds—everything that moves on land—came out of the ark, one kind after another” (Genesis 8:19).
How do we make decisions in our life? Usually, we make steps forward with our observations and our hard work. We make and keep our observations to make decisions. We think that Noah was also observing to find the timing to get out from the Ark, but Noah had been waiting for the guidance of God. He worked very hard every day, and waited for the words of God.
I preached a couple of weeks ago that Jesus is our shepherd and we are sheep following him. Do you remember that? Noah did not pass his shepherd while his shepherd does not move. When the shepherd stays, he also stays. He had been waiting for the words of the shepherd, “Let’s go, now”.
Psalm 23 said the Lord is our shepherd, and the shepherd lead us to the pastures and the waters. We also think about the pastures and waters and make plans to reach that place, but we do not know if the pastures and waters are in the place that we predict. When we reach there, there might not such a pasture and waters, but our shepherd knows and stands before us to lead us.
The dove with the olive leaf is now the symbol of peace. The leaf was great joy and hope for him and his family. Because of Noah’s constant effort, he found the hope in that trial. God also gives us the same kind of joy and hope in our trials. Noah imagines about the land that he had not seen yet and thinks about the deed of God, and he strengthened his obedience to God.
Noah did not get out from the Ark, but remain in the Ark. He had been waiting for the words of God even with the olive leaf.
When Noah recalls the beginning, God closed the door of the Ark and the Ark floated (Genesis 7:16). Noah must have thought, God closed the door, and he should not open the door till God will permit to do so. His final decision is not coming from what he had observed, but from the words of God.
When we face decisions, we want to listen and obey the words of God. The Lord is our shepherd and we are the sheep. Sheep will not follow the shepherd by their eyes, but listen and obey the shepherd. This is what believing God is. We will face the wall when we only rely on our observation and plan, but when we obey the words of God, our way is solid.
The chapter mentions about what Noah had done soon after he came out from the Ark. Please imagine that you were in the Ark for more than half a year with animals. What are you going to do when you are released from that environment and daily obligations? Nobody would criticize you if you please yourself, but how about Noah?
20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it (Genesis 8:20). He went out the Ark and built an altar to the Lord, and offered the clean animals and birds for offerings. The offerings were burned completely, which showed Noah’s complete dedication to God.
We celebrated Thanks Giving last week, and we ponder about Noah and his family in this season. One hundred and two people came to this land in 1620 for the freedom of their faith. They settled in Plymouth in the East Coast. They were just like Noah. When they saw the land, they must be excited after hard journey on the ocean, but they waited three days to land, and they also gave thanks to God just like Noah did.
They followed what Noah did on the land. They thank God first. When we think about the beginning of this country, we should follow their faith forever, and that is not only about the nation, but our life which was begun with God, which means He opened our door. We also will continue daily things faithfully and follow our Lord, Jesus Christ, every day. Let us pray.
