この度、私達が引っ越した地域は全米で二番目にアラブ住民が多い地域です。先日、その地域のスクール・ディストリクト・オフィスを訪ねましたら、英語とアラブ語の二つの案内が掲げられておりました。このような異文化の中で出会うかもしれない友人達との交流を私は楽しみにしています。このようなことを踏まえて、今日は世界で起きているありのままの問題を、アラブ民族の祖であるイシマエルはなぜ生まれたのかということに焦点をあててお話しします。

なぜイシマエルは生まれたのか。

アブラハムとサラの人生について三回に分けてお話ししてまいりました。高齢の彼らに子が与えられるという約束を神様から受けて、２４年後にその約束は成就するのですが、その約束の内容とそれが叶う年月を考えますと、この年月は彼らにとってとてつもなく長いものでありました。このような時に人は不信仰になったり、諦めたりするものです。ましてやアブラハムとサラの約束は出産ということでありますから、年ごとにその成就は難しくなると誰もが思います。このことはアブラハム夫妻にとりましても例外ではなく、彼らはその神の約束の成就を待つことができなくなり、自分で何とかしようとしました。聖書、創世記はそのことをこのように書いています。
1アブラムの妻サライは子を産まなかった。彼女にひとりのつかえめがあった。エジプトの女で名をハガルといった。2サライはアブラムに言った、「主はわたしに子をお授けになりません。どうぞ、わたしのつかえめの所におはいりください。彼女によってわたしは子をもつことになるでしょう」。アブラムはサライの言葉を聞きいれた。3アブラムの妻サライはそのつかえめエジプトの女ハガルをとって、夫アブラムに妻として与えた。これはアブラムがカナンの地に十年住んだ後であった。4彼はハガルの所にはいり、ハガルは子をはらんだ（創世記１６章１節‐４節）。
サラは自ら、つかえめハガルをアブラハムに与えました。このようなことは今日の倫理観では受け入れられるようなことではないのですが、当時のまだ人間社会というものが原始的でありました時代によくなされていることであり、つかえめハガルはアブラハムにより子を宿すようになります。ここから人間の諸々の感情が噴き出てきます。創世記は続いてこう記録しています。
彼女（ハガル）は自分のはらんだのを見て、女主人を見下げるようになった。5そこでサライはアブラムに言った、「わたしが受けた害はあなたの責任です。わたしのつかえめをあなたのふところに与えたのに、彼女は自分のはらんだのを見て、わたしを見下げます。どうか、主があなたとわたしの間をおさばきになるように」。6アブラムはサライに言った、「あなたのつかえめはあなたの手のうちにある。あなたの好きなように彼女にしなさい」（創世記１６章４節―６節）
ハガルは子が与えられた時に、サラを下げずみました。「子が与えられる」ことによって人を見下げる理由などはどこにもないのですが、それがハガルの心でした。言うまでもなくこのことはサラの心を傷つけ、彼女の心の中には憤りが生まれました。そこで彼女は自らの提案によって起きたこのことを、あたかも夫アブラハムの責任かのようにアブラハムに詰め寄るのです。そうです、責任転嫁です。あのエデンの園でのアダムとエバの時と全く同じです。
さらにアブラハムはそんなサラを諭すことができずに言います「あなたのつかえめはあなたの手のうちにある。あなたの好きなように彼女にしなさい」。この辺りからこの夫婦の関係というものがうかがい知れます。決して彼らの関係が良好とは言えませんでしょう。サラは以降、ハガルを苦しめます。日本語で言いますのなら、ハガルをいじめるのです。まさしく「おしん」の世界です。
当時「おしん」はイランをはじめ聖書の舞台となりました中東地域でも、記録的な視聴率を得たようですが（イランでは視聴率が９０パーセントを超えたのをご存知ですか）、このあたりのことを読みます時に、私達人間はアブラハム夫妻の時代から何も進歩していないということ、またこのようなことは世界共通のことであることが分かります。さて、ハガルはサラのいじめを受けてどうしたのでしょうか。創世記は引き続き書いております。
そしてサライが彼女を苦しめたので、彼女はサライの顔を避けて逃げた。7主の使は荒野にある泉のほとり、すなわちシュルの道にある泉のほとりで、彼女に会い、8そして言った、「サライのつかえめハガルよ、あなたはどこからきたのですか、またどこへ行くのですか」。彼女は言った、「わたしは女主人サライの顔を避けて逃げているのです」。9主の使は彼女に言った、「あなたは女主人のもとに帰って、その手に身を任せなさい」。10主の使はまた彼女に言った、「わたしは大いにあなたの子孫を増して、数えきれないほどに多くしましょう」。11主の使はまた彼女に言った、「あなたは、みごもっています。あなたは男の子を産むでしょう。名をイシマエルと名づけなさい。主があなたの苦しみを聞かれたのです。12彼は野ろばのような人となり、その手はすべての人に逆らい、すべての人の手は彼に逆らい、彼はすべての兄弟に敵して住むでしょう」。（創世記１６章６節‐１２節）。
ハガルがその所を逃げるほどにサラのいじめは陰湿だったようです。もうそこにはおれずに彼女はその場から当てもなく逃避しようとしたのでしょう。その道すがら、主の御使いが彼女に会い、語りかけます「あなたは女主人のもとに帰りなさい」と。そして、彼女の胎に宿っている子について言及します。「わたしは大いにあなたの子孫を増して、数えきれないほどに多くしましょう」（１０）、さらに御使いは言います「彼（私があなたに与えたイシマエル）は野ろばのような人となり、その手はすべての人に逆らい、すべての人の手は彼に逆らい、彼はすべての兄弟に敵して住むでしょう」（１２）
ハガルは御使いの言葉を受けてアブラハムのもとに帰ります。そして、御使いに言われたように男の子を産み、その名をイシマエルとします。そして、このイシマエルは後のアラブ民族の祖となるのです。今日、ユダヤ人とアラブ人の人口比率は１対４２、その国土の比率は１対６６２です。ユダヤ人がどれだけのイスラムに影響を受けた国々に取り囲まれているかご存知ですか。
ご存知のように今日のイスラム教徒のマジョリティーはアラブの人たちです。世界の宗教別人口は現在キリスト教徒が最大ですが、２０７０年にはイスラム教徒とキリスト教徒はほぼ同数となり、２１００年になりますとイスラム教徒が最大勢力となると米調査機関、ピュー・リサーチ・センターがまとめました。２０１０年のキリスト教徒数は ２１億７０００万人で、イスラム教徒が１６億人でキリスト教徒が世界の宗教人口の中最大なのですが、これが２０７０年にはキリスト教、イスラム教共にほぼ同じとなり、 ２１００年にはイスラム教徒がキリスト教徒を上回るというのです。
この宗教人口の推移は実際にこれから確かに起きてくるのでありましょう。この研究機関はこのようにイスラム教徒が増える原因はイスラム教徒の方がキリスト教徒よりもはるかに出生率が高いというのです。私達はこのことを色々な思いをもって受け止めますが、このことは今から４２００年も昔に既に言われておりました。先に読みましたでしょう、御使いはハガルに言ったのです。「わたしは大いにあなたの子孫を増して、数えきれないほどに多くしましょう」。（創世記１６章１０節）。
アメリカとソビエトが冷戦をしていた時代、世界を二分していたものはイデオロギーでありました。しかし、今日、私達の世界が直面している問題はイデオロギーの問題ではなく、民族と宗教の問題となっております。特に欧州の移民問題、そしてテロリスト集団であるイスラム国の問題というのは世界が最も注視している問題であり、この二つの問題はそれぞれ個別のものではなくて、二つにして一つの問題であります。
私達はおびただしい数のシリア難民がヨーロッパの各国に押し寄せていることを知っています。そして、移民としてヨーロッパの国々に入ってきた中にテロリストが混在しているということに各国の国民は脅威を感じております。そう、この移民にしても、イスラム国にしてもそれは主にアラブ諸国の国々と関係があるのです。このことはアメリカに住む私達にとりましても無関係なことではなく、フランスのパリやイスタンブールで起きたことがサンディエゴのダウンタウンで起きても何も不思議ではないのです。
私はこのメッセージを通してアラブ人を非難しようとは全く思っていません。イスラム国が言うところのイスラムの教えと普通のイスラム教徒が信仰しているイスラムの教えは全く異なるということを私達はよく理解しております。私達クリスチャンの信仰がこの国で守られていますように、普通のイスラム教徒の信仰は保護されなくてはなりません。この度、私達が引っ越しをした地域は全米で二番目にアラブ住民が多い地域です。先日、その地域のスクール・ディスリクト・オフィスを訪ねましたら、英語とアラブ語の二つの案内が掲げられておりました。このような異文化の中で出会うかもしれない友人達との交流を私は楽しみにしています。このようなことを踏まえて、私は今、世界で起きている問題の事実をありのまま述べているのです。
現在のイスラム国の横暴は明らかに世界の国々が憂慮することでありましょう。無差別に人間を殺戮するテロは厳しく非難されるべきであるという価値観を有する国がこの世界の大多数であり、既にその何か国はしかるべきことを始めていますでしょう。そのようなことを思います時に、再び、ハガルに向かい、彼女の胎の中にいる子に対して向けられた今から４２００年も昔の神の言葉が私達の注意を惹きつけるのです。
11主の使はまた彼女に言った、「あなたは、みごもっています。あなたは男の子を産むでしょう。名をイシマエルと名づけなさい。主があなたの苦しみを聞かれたのです。12彼は野ろばのような人となり、その手はすべての人に逆らい、すべての人の手は彼に逆らい、彼はすべての兄弟に敵して住むでしょう」。（創世記１６章１１節‐１２節）。
時を経てハガルはイシマエルを産みます。それまでイシマエルの姿をハガルはもちろんのこと、サラも見ることはできませんでした。しかし、誕生後にはその子の姿というものがいつもアブラハムの敷地の中にはありました。やがてその子が幼子となりまして、事の次第を全く知らないイサクと遊ぶようになります。当然です、子供なのですから。しかし、その光景を見ていたサラの心にまたある感情が芽生えてきます。
9サラはエジプトの女ハガルのアブラハムに産んだ子が、自分の子イサクと遊ぶのを見て、10アブラハムに言った、「このはしためとその子を追い出してください。このはしための子はわたしの子イサクと共に、世継となるべき者ではありません」。11この事で、アブラハムはその子のために非常に心配した。12神はアブラハムに言われた、「あのわらべのため、またあなたのはしためのために心配することはない。サラがあなたに言うことはすべて聞きいれなさい。イサクに生れる者が、あなたの子孫と唱えられるからです。13しかし、はしための子もあなたの子ですから、これをも、一つの国民とします」（創世記２１章９節ー１３節）。
先にイシマエルの子孫は数えきれないほど多くなると御使いは言い、彼は全ての兄弟に敵して住むでしょうと言われました。そして、ここにきて神様ははっきりとアブラハムに言われたのです。あなたの子イサクから生まれる子達が確かにあなたの子孫となると。しかし、ハガルの子もあなたの子であるから、それも一つの国民となるであろうと。そうです、このことは言うまでもない、イサクによるところのユダヤ民族とイシマエルによるところのアラブ民族のことを言っています。
アブラハムとサラの間に夫婦の会話が何度も繰り返されたのでしょう。自分達で望んで得たイシマエルなのですが、アブラハムはこの親子をいよいよ家から去らせます。
14そこでアブラハムは明くる朝はやく起きて、パンと水の皮袋とを取り、ハガルに与えて、肩に負わせ、その子を連れて去らせた。ハガルは去ってベエルシバの荒野にさまよった。15やがて皮袋の水が尽きたので、彼女はその子を木の下におき、16「わたしはこの子の死ぬのを見るに忍びない」と言って、矢の届くほど離れて行き、子供の方に向いてすわった。彼女が子供の方に向いてすわったとき、子供は声をあげて泣いた。17神はわらべの声を聞かれ、神の使は天からハガルを呼んで言った、「ハガルよ、どうしたのか。恐れてはいけない。神はあそこにいるわらべの声を聞かれた。18立って行き、わらべを取り上げてあなたの手に抱きなさい。わたしは彼を大いなる国民とするであろう」。19神がハガルの目を開かれたので、彼女は水の井戸のあるのを見た。彼女は行って皮袋に水を満たし、わらべに飲ませた。20神はわらべと共にいまし、わらべは成長した。彼は荒野に住んで弓を射る者となった。21彼はパランの荒野に住んだ。母は彼のためにエジプトの国から妻を迎えた（創世記２１章１４節‐２１節）。
与えられた食物というのは数日に足るもので、その先、荒野をさまよう彼らに命の保証はありません。早速、水が尽きました。いよいよ死が戸口に近づいたというような時に、子供は泣きます。神はこのわらべの声を聴き、この親子は死ぬことなく、イシマエルをして大いなる国民とすると言われたのです。そして、この親子は神に御守られて、その約束通り彼の子孫は今、世界に満ち、他民族を凌駕するほどに増え広がっているのです。
今日、イスラム教徒はハガルをアブラハムの正妻と位置づけ、アブラハムが捧げた犠牲もイサクではなく、イシマエルとしています。私達はアブラハム以降、人がたどった歴史を知ることができますが、アブラハムがいかなる決断と行動をとるかによって、あるいいは神の介入によって、人の歴史は大きく変わっていたのかもしれません。
主にある皆さん、今日のメッセージタイトルは「なぜイシマエルは生まれたのか」というものです。人間の歴史を振り返ります時にイシマエルの子孫たちとユダヤ人、またクリスチャンの間には多くの問題が起きました。時にそれはユダヤ人に脅威となり、実際に教会が壊されて、モスクが立っているという国地域はあの神の都、エルサレムも含め世界各地にありますし、現在、あちらこちらで教会が壊され、クリスチャンが殺されています。これからそのイスラム教徒の数はクリスチャンを超えるというのです。そのような意味でこのイシマエルの子孫の存在は決してクリスチヤニティーを後押しするものではなく、かえってその行く手を阻むことになるかもしれません。
もちろん、このことはイスラム教徒の側の思いもあります。ユダヤ人、クリスチャンがイスラム教徒に与えている否定的なこと、苦しみということも私達は当然、知っていなければなりません。
イシマエルという子を思います時に、この子は明らかにアブラハム夫妻の不信仰から生まれてきた子なのです。神の言葉を信じることがなく生まれてきたのです。このような子に対して神様はどのように向き合われたのでしょうか。私達は神様がわらべイシマエルの涙を聞き、彼を保護したというのです。もしかしたら私達はこのことに驚きを感じるかもしれません。しかし、実際のところ聖書全体をじっくりと読みますのなら、このことは驚くべきことではないのです。なぜなら、このイシマエルのうちに神の不変の御性質というものがあらわれており、この御性質こそが神が人と紡いだ聖書の物語の中に常に組み込まれているからです。
ハガルはサラを下げずみましたね。それはハガルの心の問題です。それに対してサラはハガルに辛くあたり、責任を夫に押しつけ、最後には彼女を追いだしました。その周りでうろたえるアブラハムの姿さえ私達は想像します。この姿が当初からの人間の姿であり、今日もこれらの様となんら変わりません。すなわち全ての人間はかくも不完全で弱く、自己中心で、問題を抱えているのです。聖書はそのような問題を総括して人は全て罪人だといいます。
この罪の性質を持ち合わせる私達の間には常に混乱がありまして、それを繰り返し私達は生きています。この混乱ゆえに分裂や離別ということも起きてきます。そうです、それまで共にいた者達が離れ離れとなるのです。さかのぼればアダムとエバがエデンの園から追われて出ていくのも人と神の離別でありました。以降、カインとアベルは血を分かち合いました兄弟同志でありますのに殺害という極端な離別を引き起こし、ロトとアブラハムも離別し、エサウとヤコブ、ヨセフと兄たちの離別が聖書の中では繰り返されます。そして、ここにきてイシマエルの離別なのです。
このような人間がキャストとなり、この地球という舞台で神様はその物語を初め、さいわないことにその物語はまだ終結せずに、何を隠そう私達一人一人もその一人のキャストとして現在、この所に生きているのです。このような物語を紡ぐ中で神様はご自身の性質と言うものをチラッチラッと見せているのです。そうです、神はあわれみ深いお方であり、あらゆる人間が神のもとに立ち返ることを望まれているお方であるということです。そうです、神様はイサクもイシマエルも保護し、彼らが絶えてしまうことを望まれてはいなかったのです。
かつてヨナという預言者がおりました。彼はアッシリアのニネべという町に悔い改めを伝えるようにと神様から遣わされます。アッシリアのニネべとはまさしくイスラエルの存在をおびやかす脅威となっている異教徒の国です。ヨナはきわめて人間的な思いをもちます。なぜそんな国にご丁寧に悔い改めを求めなければならないのかという本音です。彼はその任務が嫌で、そこから逃れようとするわけですが、結局のところニネべに行き、悔い改めを告げたところ彼らは悔い改めて神に立ち返ったというのです。ヨナはこのことに気分を害しますが、神は彼にとうごまの木を与え、彼はその日陰を非常に喜びます。しかし、打って変ってそのとうごまの木が枯れますとヨナは弱りはて、死ぬことを願います。その時に主は彼に語りかけるのです。
10主は言われた、「あなたは労せず、育てず、一夜に生じて、一夜に滅びたこのとうごまをさえ、惜しんでいる。11ましてわたしは十二万あまりの、右左をわきまえない人々と、あまたの家畜とのいるこの大きな町ニネベを、惜しまないでいられようか」（ヨナ４章１０節ー１１節）。
今日は時間がありませんので、全てをお話しすることができませんが、聖書の中にはこのように右左をわきまえない罪人に対する、異教徒に対する神のあわれみが多く書かれています。そして、そのことは新約聖書においてさらに顕著になるイエス・キリストにいたってはあの有名な言葉によって神の心を表しました。
私達はイエス様が語られた放蕩息子の話を知っています。あの話において弟が放蕩によって全てを失いますが、父は彼が家に帰ることを待ち続け、彼が帰ってきたら無条件でこの息子を迎え入れたというたとえ話です。言うまでもなく、それは罪人である私達が父なる神のもとに立ち返ることを神は心より望んでいるということを私達に語りかけます。しかし、あのたとえはそこにポイントが置かれているのではないのです。あのたとえ話のポイントは兄なのです。弟が無条件で父のあわれみを受けているということに兄はねたむのです。なんでこんな落ちぶれた、あなたの元を離れた者をあなたはあわれむのかと。その時、父は兄に何と答えますか。
31すると父は言った、『子よ、あなたはいつもわたしと一緒にいるし、またわたしのものは全部あなたのものだ。32しかし、このあなたの弟は、死んでいたのに生き返り、いなくなっていたのに見つかったのだから、喜び祝うのはあたりまえである』」（ルカ１５章３１節―３２節）。
主にある皆さん、この譬え話が何を示しているかお分かりになりますでしょう。そうです、ユダヤ人と異邦人です。ユダヤ人は神のあわれみにより祝福を受けている。しかし、神のあわれみは彼らだけではなく、確かにならず者のように振る舞う者達の上にも注がれており、彼らが捨てられ滅びることは神の御心ではないというのです。
例えば私達の長男はとても親孝行な息子。私達の次男はいつも問題を起こしてばかり。でもこの子達はどちらも私達の大切な子供です。
私達は思います。私はクリスチャン。しかし、彼らはイスラム教徒。そこに区別をつけます。しかし、我々の父なる神にとりまして、クリスチャンもイスラム教徒もかけがえのない神の子なのです。
今日は取り上げませんが、ユダヤ民族の歴史というのは他の民族に見られないものです。彼らの歴史は自国を失ってから長きにわたり国を持たず、多くの迫害を受けた歴史であります。ユダヤ民族が世界人口の中で占める割合といのは本当に微々たるものでありますが、彼らほどこの世界に影響を与えている人たちはおりません。あえて申し上げませんが、彼らに与えられたノーベル賞の数は世界人口の中における彼らの人口比で考えましたら、到底考えられる人数ではありません。さらには国を失ってからおよそ２０００年もの年月が経ってから再び国家を生み出すなんてことは他の民族には起きえない話なのです。これら全てがなぜ起きたのでしょうか。私達はアブラハムが神と歩み始めたあの最初の語りかけにあるのです。
1時に主はアブラムに言われた、「あなたは国を出て、親族に別れ、父の家を離れ、わたしが示す地に行きなさい。2わたしはあなたを大いなる国民とし、あなたを祝福し、あなたの名を大きくしよう。あなたは祝福の基となるであろう。3あなたを祝福する者をわたしは祝福し、あなたをのろう者をわたしはのろう。地のすべてのやからは、あなたによって祝福される」（創世記１２章１節―３節）。
神はアブラハムと取り交わしたこの契約に真実であり続け、その祝福を彼らに与え続けているのです。まさしくそれも神のあわれみなのです。聖書によりますとこのユダヤ人は頑なとなり、メシアイエスを受け入れようとしません。しかし、そのことによりこの神が人に与える救いはユダヤ人以外の異邦人に及びました。神は何度もユダヤ人に悔い改めを迫りましたが彼らは頑なであり続けました。しかし、ヨナ書における異教徒の町、ニネべはヨナの悔い改めのメッセージにすぐに反応して彼らは悔い改めたのです。このようなことにはどんな神の御心があらわれているのでしょうか。
パウロはローマ書にこう語っているではありませんか。7では、どうなるのか。イスラエルはその追い求めているものを得ないで、ただ選ばれた者が、それを得た。そして、他の者たちはかたくなになった。8「神は、彼らに鈍い心と、見えない目と、聞えない耳とを与えて、きょう、この日に及んでいる」と書いてあるとおりである。9ダビデもまた言っている、「彼らの食卓は、彼らのわなとなれ、網となれ、つまずきとなれ、報復となれ。10彼らの目は、くらんで見えなくなれ、彼らの背は、いつまでも曲っておれ」。11そこで、わたしは問う、「彼らがつまずいたのは、倒れるためであったのか」。断じてそうではない。かえって、彼らの罪過によって、救が異邦人に及び、それによってイスラエルを奮起させるためである。12しかし、もし、彼らの罪過が世の富となり、彼らの失敗が異邦人の富となったとすれば、まして彼らが全部救われたなら、どんなにかすばらしいことであろう。（ローマ１１章７節ー１２節）
神がかつてアブラハムと取り交わしたあの創世記１２章の契約は現在も有効なのです。確かにユダヤ人の頑なさは今も変わりませんが、それゆえに神の恵みが今日、異邦人に注がれており、それゆえにユダヤ人が奮起させようとしているとパウロは言っているのです。そして、パウロは最後に書いているではありませんか。12しかし、もし、彼らの罪過が世の富となり、彼らの失敗が異邦人の富となったとすれば、まして彼らが全部救われたなら、どんなにかすばらしいことであろう。（ローマ１１章１２節）
そして、パウロがこの言葉を言った７５０年前にイザヤはこの世の最後の時に起こることを予言しているのです。24その日、イスラエルはエジプトとアッスリヤと共に三つ相並び、全地のうちで祝福をうけるものとなる。25万軍の主は、これを祝福して言われる、「さいわいなるかな、わが民なるエジプト、わが手のわざなるアッスリヤ、わが嗣業なるイスラエル」と（イザヤ１９章２４節‐２５節）。
そうです、その時、神の前にユダヤ人もアラブ人もなく彼らはみな、神の前に等しく並び、祝福を受けるのです。かつてのイスラエルの敵国、異教徒の国がすべて神の御手の中でわたしの民となるというのです。この神の御心に向かい、今、私達の世界は動いているのです。
主にある皆さん、このように今、世界で起きていることを聖書に照らし合わせてみます時に、私達は神の御前に身震いがするのです。確かに世界はアブラハムの時代に語られた言葉通りになり、そして、これからも既に語られているところに向かい、この世界は動いているのです。やがていつの日かユダヤ人もアラブ人も神の前に祝福を受けるのです。なぜなら彼らは共に兄弟であり、神の子だからです。
私達はこの物語の中に生きているのです。そして、神の前にかけがえのないあなたという人を私達がこの物語の中に見出すことができるのです。それを注意深く見るのなら、私達自身もこの物語に関与していることを見出すのです。この物語はまだ完成してはおらず、あなた自身もその物語の中に欠かせない一人の人物なのです。どうか目先の出来事でこの物語を結論づけることがありませんように。

I had delivered three massages about the lives of Abraham and Sarah. They were promised to have a child from God, and the promise was accomplished after 24 years. The years were long for them. Usually, we tend to be unfaithful and give up in such a situation. Especially, because the promise was about pregnancy; we would think it would be difficult every year. They thought the same, and tried to have a child by their own way. Today, I will quote a couple of Bible verses, but I will not read everything in English because of limited time, so please follow in English on the screen.
16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaanten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.
Sarah gave an Egyptian slave, Hagar to Abraham. This is not acceptable in today’s ethics, but it was still common in ancient primitive society, and Hagar conceived a child for Abraham. Now there are various emotions expressed. The book of Genesis said;
4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”6 “Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. (Genesis 16:4-6)
When Hagar became pregnant, she despised Sarah. There is no reason to despise anyone when given a child, bud Hagar did. This made Sarah angry, and she accused Abraham. We know Sarah suggested to Abraham to have a child with Hagar, but now she puts the blame on Abraham. This is the exact same thing that happened between Adam and Eve at the garden of Eden.
Abraham was not in a situation where he could admonish Sarah and he said “Do with her whatever you think best.” Now we can imagine their relationship as a husband and wife. The relationship of Abraham and Sarah does not seem ideal. Sarah mistreated Hagar. We say in Japanese that it is IJIME, in English it means bully. This is similar to Japanese drama, OSHIN.
OSHIN was very popular Japanese TV drama among countries in the middle east (Did you know the viewing rate is over 90% in Iran), and we know, we, humans are not getting better since their time and this issue is universal. Well then, what did Hagar do after Sarah’s harsh mistreatment? The book of Genesis said,
6 Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”11 The angel of the Lord also said to her:“You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son.You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard of your misery.12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
Sarah’s mistreatment was so bad, so Hagar ran away from the place. On the way of her escape, the angel spoke to her “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” and mentioned about a baby she is going to have, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(11) and He (Ishmael) will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers (12).”
Hagar went back to Abraham and she delivered a baby boy, and named him Ishmael. He became the ancestor of the Arabic people.
Did you know the ratio of Jews and Arab population is 1:2, and the ratio of their land is 1:662. Do you know Israel is completely surrounded by Muslim countries?
As we know the majority of Muslims are Arab. According to US Pew Research Center, the largest population of world religion is Christianity right now. There are about 21.7 billion Christian and 16 billion Muslim people in the world right now, but the number of Christianity and Muslin will be about the same in 2070, and the Muslims will take over Christianity in 2100.
This is going to happen in our world and the institute said that one of the biggest reasons is that Muslim people have a higher birth rate than Christians. We try to accept this fact with many thoughts in our mind, but this is already told 4200 years ago. The angel said to Hagar, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(Genesis 16:10).
When America and the Soviet Union were critically faced during the cold war, our world was divided by ideology, but now we are facing the challenge of race and religion. The problem of immigration in Europe and terrorist attacks of ISIS is the biggest problem in our world right now, and these are not separated issues but it is one problem.
We know a tremendous number of Syrian refugee are coming to European countries and now they found some terrorists among those refugee. This became a threat for people, and these are all related to certain Arabic countries. This also involve us who live in this country. Nobody can say the attacks in Paris and Istanbul will not happen in downtown, San Diego.
I am not intending to accuse Arabic people through this message at all. I understand the teaching of Islam is totally different from the teaching of ISIS. As our Christian faith is protected by the constitution, their faith must also be protected by our constitution. We moved to a new community last December, and it is the second largest Arabic community in this country. When I visited the school district office, they placed English and Arabic sign on the wall. Personally I am looking for the friendly relationship with these Arabic people. Based on this, I am talking about what is happening in this world.
Many of us really worry about the terrorist attacks by ISIS. Majority of people in this world accuse the terrorists. Many of us with the same values, and some countries have already made steps into this problem. As we think about this reality, our attention goes to the words in Genesis.
11 The angel of the Lord also said to her: “You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son.You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard of your misery.12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
After for a while, Hagar delivered Ishmael. Now Sarah sees Ishmael play with her son, Isaac, and she had complex emotion. Let’s read Genesis 21:9-13.
9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.” 11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring[b] will be reckoned. 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”
The angel told the descendants of Ishmael will be too numerous to count, and the descendants will be the enemy for everyone. Now God told Abraham it is through Isaac that his offspring will be reckoned and Ishmael will also pass inheritance into a nation, because Ishmael is his offspring.” This is about the Jews of Isaac and Arabs of Ishmael.
Abraham and Sarah discuss many times, and finally they kick Hagar and Ishmael out from their house, even though they wished to have their child through Hagar in the beginning.
14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she[c] began to sob.17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”19 Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.20 God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.
The food given to them would only last for a couple of days, and no guarantee to live in the desert. The water was gone and they came near to death. Ishmael cried, and God listened to the cry, and God promised the mother and child will not lose their lives, and make Ishmael to be a big nation, and as this promise, now Muslims are increasing in the world.
Today, Muslims place Hagar as wife of Abraham, and the sacrifice was not Isaac but Ishmael. Now we are able to read the human history since the time of Abraham, if the words and deeds of Abraham were different, or God’s involvement was different, our current history might be completely different.
Dear everyone, my message title is “why was Ishmael born?” As we look back in our history, there were problems among the descendants of Ishmael, Jews, and Christians. At sometime, Muslims were threats for Jews and also they destroyed Christian church and built Muslim Mosque. As you know churches are destroyed and Christians are being killed right now in some regions, and the number of Muslims will increase to be more than Christians. As we observe the fact, some of the offspring of Ishmael are not a positive influence for Jews and Christians but rather are a threat.
Of course, this is the same situation Muslims have. Jews and Christians also give them hardships and threats. We have to know the fact from both sides.
When we think about Ishmael, he was born by the unfaithfulness of Abraham and Sarah. He was born because Sarah and Abraham did not believe in God. God listened to the cry of Ishmael, and God protected him. We might wonder why this has happened but when we read the Bible carefully, it is not a surprise at all, because the unchanging character of God is revealed through Ishmael, and we can always see this character in the Bible.
Hagar despised Sarah, and that is her problem, and Sarah bullied Hagar, and accused Abraham and eventually kicked Hagar out. They are human and nothing is different today. We all are so weak and selfish and have problems. The Bible calls us sinners.
We are sinners and therefore, we always have confusion and distraction. We have been repeating that. The confusion causes our separation, yes we separate because of our sin. When Adam and Eve are kicked out from the Garden of Eden, they are separated from God. Cain and Abel were brothers, but they were separated because of murder. Esau and Jacob were separated because of deception, Joseph was separated from his brothers because of their envy, and now Ishmael was separated from his father, Abraham.
These people are the cast (characters) of the story of God. God begun His story on this earth, and by His grace, the story has not ended yet. God reveals his character through the story. Yes, He is the one who is full of mercy and always wishes for us to come back to Him. Yes, God protected both Isaac and Ishmael because of His mercy.
There was a prophet, named Jonah. He was sent by God to the town of Nineveh, Assyria. Assyria was a pagan country which threatens Israel. Jonah thought, why should I go there and ask for them to repent? He did not like his mission, so he tried to run away, but as a result he visited Nineveh and he asked them to repent and actually, they repented and came back to God. Jonah did not have a good attitude towards this, but God gave him tree for shade and he really liked that, but the tree withered. From this, Jonah becomes weak and wishes to die, and at that time God told him,
10 But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”(Jonah 4:10-11)
I do not have enough time today, but there is so much mercy of God towards the sinner and pagan in the Bible, and the mercy will become more clear through Jesus Christ.
We know the parable of the prodigal son. The son lost everything his father gave to him, but his father had been waiting for him to come home and the father accepted him unconditionally. The parable told us God is always waiting for the sinners to come back to Him, but this is not the theme of this parable. The point of this story is the big brother. The big brother complained about the father’s generosity towards his younger brother. He is upset because his father has mercy on his brother who used all his fortune. The father explained to him;,
31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”(Luke 15:31-32)
Dear brothers and sisters, now you know the massage of this parable, yes the brothers are Jews and gentiles. The Jews are blessed and had mercy of God, but the blessing and mercy is not only for Jews, God also has mercy on gentiles who were against God. It is not God’s will for these gentiles to perish.
For example, our oldest son is obedient, but the younger son is always bringing troubles to parent, but they are both precious sons.
We think, we are Christian and they are Muslim. We draw the line between us, but for our heavenly father, we, both Christian and Muslim are children of God.
The history of Jews is very peculiar. They lost their country and did not have the land for thousands of years and they were persecuted for a long time. The population of Jews are so small, but still they are the most influential people to the world. It is unbelievable the number of people who win the Nobel Prize. The ratio is amazing when we think about the Jews population in the world. They are only 0.2 percent in this world. Moreover, they lost their country for about 2000 years and they built the country again about 70 years ago. How could all of this happen. Do you remember the first covenant God made with Abraham in Genesis 12.
12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:1-3)
God has been faithful with this covenant, and has blessed them. This is also God’s mercy and grace. But, according to the Bible, Jews become stubborn and do not accept the Messaiah, Jesus, and this leads to the salvation of gentiles. God kept asking repentance to Jews so many times, but they did not repent, but the people of Nineveh, the pagan responded instantly and repent to God. What is this story telling us.
Apostle Paul wrote in the book of Romans;
7 What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain. The elect among them did, but the others were hardened, 8 as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”9 And David says: “May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them.10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.”11 Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious. 12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!(Romans 11:7-12)
The covenant of Genesis 12 is still effective. The stubbornness of Jews have not yet changed, but because of that, the salvation of God has now come to the gentiles to make Israel envious. Brothers and sisters Paul already told that, 12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!(Romans 11:7-12)
And the prophet Isaiah prophesized 750 years before Paul, he prophesized the things will happen at the end of this world.24 In that day Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing on the earth. 25 The Lord Almighty will bless them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance.” (Isaiah 19:24-25)
Yes, in that day, Jews and Arabs will be blessed by God. They were enemy before but they will become the inheritance of God. Our world is moving toward this end.
Dear everyone, when we look at the things that have happened and are happening in this world and find the words in the Bible, we are shaken. Our world becomes what has already been told in the age of Abraham, and we are moving towards what is written in the Bible. On that day, Jews and Arabs will be blessed by God because they are brothers and are both children of God.
We are living in this story, and we can find ourselves in this story. When we carefully look at the story, we find we are also related to this story as a gentile and also as a child of God. This story is not complete yet, and you are inevitable one in this story. Therefore may we not make our own conclusions in life. Let us pray.
