そのことによる弊害がありました。教会のことばかりに没頭している親に対して多くの牧師の子供達が反発して信仰から離れてしまいました。とても残念なことです。
そんな親達がいつも口癖にしているのは、ここに記されています「主の山に備えあり」という言葉でありまして、子供が何かの不足を親に訴えますといつも返ってくる言葉は「主の山に備えあり」であり、子供は内心「またか、すぐにそこにいくんだから」と思っているのです。しかし、実際にその必要や不足が不思議な方法で応えられるということをその子達は幾度も目の当たりにしました。お話しましたように確かに信仰を失った子供達はいたのですが、同時にそのような家庭から親の信仰を継承し、牧師となる者達も多く出ました。そうです、時に彼らは我が子よりも神を第一としている親達の信仰に本物の匂いを嗅ぎとったのです・・・。

「信仰が継承される時」

今日、お話ししたく願っている人はイサクという人です。このイサクはこれまで四度にわたりお話しましたアブラハムと妻サラが２４年もの間、待ちに待ってやっと与えられた神様からの約束の子供です。イサクはその父アブラハムと彼の息子エサウやヤコブに比べますと聖書に記録されていることは多くありません。そのような意味で彼はとても地味な人に思われます。しかし、聖書を見ていきますとこのイサクは確かにアブラハムの信仰を継承したことが分かります。今日はそのアブラハムからイサクに継承されたものについてお話ししましょう。
まず、このイサクには決して忘れることができない光景があったということを確認したいと思います。それはどんな光景であったのか、その出来事を記す聖書箇所を読ませていただきます。
１これらの事の後、神はアブラハムを試みて彼に言われた、「アブラハムよ」。彼は言った、「ここにおります」。２神は言われた、「あなたの子、あなたの愛するひとり子イサクを連れてモリヤの地に行き、わたしが示す山で彼を燔祭としてささげなさい」。３アブラハムは朝はやく起きて、ろばにくらを置き、ふたりの若者と、その子イサクとを連れ、また燔祭のたきぎを割り、立って神が示された所に出かけた。三日目に、アブラハムは目をあげて、はるかにその場所を見た。５そこでアブラハムは若者たちに言った、「あなたがたは、ろばと一緒にここにいなさい。わたしとわらべは向こうへ行って礼拝し、そののち、あなたがたの所に帰ってきます」。６アブラハムは燔祭のたきぎを取って、その子イサクに負わせ、手に火と刃物とを執って、ふたり一緒に行った。７やがてイサクは父アブラハムに言った、「父よ」。彼は答えた、「子よ、わたしはここにいます」。イサクは言った、「火とたきぎとはありますが、燔祭の小羊はどこにありますか」。８アブラハムは言った、「子よ、神みずから燔祭の小羊を備えてくださるであろう」。こうしてふたりは一緒に行った。９彼らが神の示された場所にきたとき、アブラハムはそこに祭壇を築き、たきぎを並べ、その子イサクを縛って祭壇のたきぎの上に載せた （創世記２２章１節‐９節）
私達が歯医者に行きますと、必ずリクライニングチェアーの上に寝かされます。私達の目の前には大きなライトがあり、医師が私達の口の中をのぞくのです。その時には当然、歯の治療がなされているのですが、私は時々この時に眠ってしまうのです。眠りますとさすがに開けていた口も閉じますので、その度に歯医者さんに「オープン」と言われます。それでも睡魔には勝てずにそんなことを何度か繰り返しますと、口が閉じないようなつっかえ棒のようなものを入れられます。その時に「あぁ、申し訳ないことをしているなー」と恥ずかしく思いながら、心の中で申し訳なく思いつつも・・・、睡魔には勝てずに眠り続けてしまうのです・・・。
先に読みました記事によりますと、イサクの場合、デンティストのチェアーで眠ってしまったというような状況ではなくて、それはとても緊迫していました。彼はこの時、縛られて祭壇のたきぎの上に寝かされていました。そして彼が慕う父アブラハムが剣を彼の上に振り上げるのです。その時のアブラハムとイサクの表情がどんなものであったか私達は想像する意外にありませんが、少なくともこの出来事をイサクは生涯、覚えていたことでしょう。それはあまりにも衝撃的で、彼の一生のトラウマとなりかねないことでした。創世記はその時のことをこう書き記しています。
１０そしてアブラハムが手を差し伸べ、刃物を執ってその子を殺そうとした時、１１主の使が天から彼を呼んで言った、「アブラハムよ、アブラハムよ」。彼は答えた、「はい、ここにおります」。１２み使が言った、「わらべを手にかけてはならない。また何も彼にしてはならない。あなたの子、あなたのひとり子をさえ、わたしのために惜しまないので、あなたが神を恐れる者であることをわたしは今知った」。１３この時アブラハムが目をあげて見ると、うしろに、角をやぶに掛けている一頭の雄羊がいた。アブラハムは行ってその雄羊を捕え、それをその子のかわりに燔祭としてささげた。１４それでアブラハムはその所の名をアドナイ・エレと呼んだ。これにより、人々は今日もなお「主の山に備えあり」と言う。（創世記２２章１０節‐１４節）
アブラハムはその時、角をやぶに掛けている一頭の雄羊を見つけたというのです。そして彼は息子イサクの変わりにこの雄羊を燔祭として捧げたのです。この出来事は多くの人達の知ることになったのでしょう。ですから、人々はこのことをして「主の山に備えあり」という言葉を互いに言い合うようになったというのです。イサクも人々から「あなたがあの“主の山に備えあり”のイサクですか」と言われたに違いありません。
このトラウマになりかねない出来事が実はアブラハムからイサクへの信仰の継承となったと信じます。親から子へと信仰が受け継がれる時というのは、まさしく絶体絶命と思われるような時に、その親がどこまで神を信じているかということでありましょう。その時に子はその親の信仰の気迫に圧倒されることでしょう。そこにその信仰に対する親の本気というものを感じ取るでしょう。それが本物なのか、本物ではないのかはそのような時に明らかになるのでしょう。

我が子に刃物を振り落とそうとする父親の姿というものは恐ろしいものです。イサクは誰よりも自分自身よく分かっていたことでしょう。この父は私の誕生をどんなに待ち望んでいたかということを。その父が神の言葉に従い、自分に刃物を振り下ろそうとしている。その父の信仰の気迫と、その者に対して神は必ず逃れの道を備えてくださるお方であるということをイサクはその時、心に刻んだに違いありません。
このイサクもこの出来事から何年も経って、家庭をもち、人生の色々な問題に直面するようになります。そうです、いよいよ父アブラハムから継承した信仰がイサクの生活の中で実際に用いられる時がきたのです。創世記２６章１２節‐２３節を読んでみましょう。
１２イサクはその地に種をまいて、その年に百倍の収穫を得た。このように主が彼を祝福されたので、１３彼は富み、またますます栄えて非常に裕福になり、１４羊の群れ、牛の群れ及び多くのしもべを持つようになったので、ペリシテびとは彼をねたんだ。１５またペリシテびとは彼の父アブラハムの時に、父のしもべたちが掘ったすべての井戸をふさぎ、土で埋めた。 １６アビメレクはイサクに言った、「あなたはわれわれよりも、はるかに強くなられたから、われわれの所を去ってください」。 １７イサクはそこを去り、ゲラルの谷に天幕を張ってその所に住んだ。 １８そしてイサクは父アブラハムの時に人々の掘った水の井戸を再び掘った。アブラハムの死後、ペリシテびとがふさいだからである。イサクは父がつけた名にしたがってそれらに名をつけた。１９しかしイサクのしもべたちが谷の中を掘って、そこにわき出る水の井戸を見つけたとき、２０ゲラルの羊飼たちは、「この水はわれわれのものだ」と言って、イサクの羊飼たちと争ったので、イサクはその井戸の名をエセクと名づけた。彼らが彼と争ったからである。２１ 彼らはまた一つの井戸を掘ったが、これをも争ったので、名をシテナと名づけた。２２イサクはそこから移ってまた一つの井戸を掘ったが、彼らはこれを争わなかったので、その名をレホボテと名づけて言った、「いま主がわれわれの場所を広げられたから、われわれはこの地にふえるであろう」。 ２３彼はそこからベエルシバに上った。
神はイサクを祝福しました。そして、そのことを妬む者達がおりました。人は今も昔も何も変わりません。それゆえにイサクは自分の土地を去っていかなければならないことが度々ありました。彼はそんな行く先々で自分達にとってのライフラインとなる井戸を掘るのですが、掘る度にクレームや争いに巻き込まれます。その度に彼はそれらの相手を打ち負かすというようなことをせずに、自らがその土地を離れて別の場所に移って行ったと創世記は記しています。
聖書は私達とかけ離れたことを話しているのではありません。ここでは家畜や井戸のことが書かれていますが、それらを自分の功績とか、会社とか、役職とかと置きかえれば、また家庭の色々な状況にあてはめれば、私達にも思い当たることが大いにあるでしょう。
小さな穴を掘ることでも難儀な私達にりまして、深い井戸を掘るというはどれほど大変なことでしょうか。その苦労を思えば、堀った井戸が奪われてしまうということは大変な損失でありまして、死守してでもその井戸を守るというのが普通のことでありましょう。しかし、イサクは井戸が争い奪われても、また別の井戸を掘りました。この個所の文脈で想像できますことは、彼がせっかく堀った井戸を争った際に、おそらく、それを求める者に彼は井戸を譲ったであろうということです。
思えばこの辺りも父親譲りであったようです。かつてアブラハムが甥のロトとそれぞれが所有する土地について話し合った時、アブラハムはロトに選択権を与えました。ロトはそれにより大変よく潤っていた、すなわち見た目のいいソドムを選び、アブラハムは別の土地を選んだのです。私達はその後、ロトがその見た目のよい土地で大変な目にあわなければならなかったことを知っています。あの時、そう、アブラハムがロトに土地の選択を優先させ、ロトが実際によく見える土地を選んだ直後、神様がアブラハムに何を語られたがご存知ですか。
14ロトがアブラムに別れた後に、主はアブラムに言われた、「目をあげてあなたのいる所から北、南、東、西を見わたしなさい。15すべてあなたが見わたす地は、永久にあなたとあなたの子孫に与えます。16わたしはあなたの子孫を地のちりのように多くします。もし人が地のちりを数えることができるなら、あなたの子孫も数えられることができましょう。17あなたは立って、その地をたてよこに行き巡りなさい。わたしはそれをあなたに与えます」（創世記１３章１４節‐１７節）。
かつて父アブラハムにこのように語られた神は自らの土地を譲り去っていくアブラハムの息子イサクにこう語られたのです「２４その夜、主は彼に現れて言われた、「わたしはあなたの父アブラハムの神である。あなたは恐れてはならない。わたしはあなたと共におって、あなたを祝福し、わたしのしもべアブラハムのゆえにあなたの子孫を増すであろう」。２５それで彼はその所に祭壇を築いて、主の名を呼び、そこに天幕を張った。またイサクの僕たちはそこに一つの井戸を掘った」（創世記２６章２４節―２５節）。
主にある皆さん、神様は言われたのです「わたしはあなたの父アブラハムの神である」。ここから分かることはアブラハムの信仰とイサクの信仰は別物ではないということです。私はアブラハムを祝福した神であり、それゆえにその信仰を継承しているあなたも祝福するというのです。
神様はせっかく掘り当てた井戸が奪われてしまい、移住が続く不安定な彼の生涯に対して、「恐れるな」とイサクを励ましました。彼がおちいった出来事を人間的に見ると、なんとも惨めな、敗北者のようにも思えますが、そんな時にイサクの心の中にはどんな思いがあったのでしょうか。彼はきっと、これら一つ一つの出来事に対して、自ら一切を神様に委ねること、そして、そのことに対して神様が必ず良きに導いてくださるという信仰があったのではないかと思うのです。そうです、「主の山に備えあり」、あの時、父と共有したあの経験が彼の生き方の根底を支えていたのです。主の山に備えありということを彼は自分の命をかけて知りましたから、自分のみならず、彼の家族の生活がかかる諸々の出来事に対しても、確信があったのでしょう。たとえ、何を奪われたとしても、何を失ったとしても、主が最善を備えてくださるに違いないと。
皆さん、もし私達にこの信仰がありますと、私達は肩の力をぬくことができます。なぜなら、何から何まで全てを自分の力でする必要がなくなるからです。神様を第一として、その日にできることを精一杯して、あとは神様に委ねて、仕えていくのなら、神様が私達にその手の伸ばしてくださるのですから。
私達はあたかも神様が存在していないかのように、自分の努力に１００％かけて猛進していることがありませんでしょうか。確かに何もしないというのは問題ですし、聖書はそれがよろしいとは言っていません。しかし、私達の果てしない努力と引き換えに私達は神様により頼むことを忘れていることはないでしょうか。「主の山に備えあり」という信仰を見失ってしまい、あれもこれも抱えて、その重さに押しつぶされそうになりながら山に登ってはいませんか。
このイサクの一連の出来事はここでは終わりません。神様はイサクが思いもしなかったようなところへとこの後、彼を導かれました。２６節以降にこう書かれています。
２６時にアビメレクがその友アホザテと、軍勢の長ピコルと共にゲラルからイサクのもとにきたので、２７イサクは彼らに言った、「あなたがたはわたしを憎んで、あなたがたの中からわたしを追い出されたのに、どうしてわたしの所にこられたのですか」。２８彼らは言った、「われわれは主があなたと共におられるのを、はっきり見ましたので、いまわれわれの間、すなわちわれわれとあなたとの間に一つの誓いを立てて、あなたと契約を結ぼうと思います。２９われわれはあなたに害を加えたことはなく、ただ良い事だけをして、安らかに去らせたのですから、あなたはわれわれに悪い事をしてはなりません。まことにあなたは主に祝福されたかたです」。３０そこでイサクは彼らのためにふるまいを設けた。彼らは飲み食いし、３１あくる朝、はやく起きて互に誓った。こうしてイサクは彼らを去らせたので、彼らはイサクのもとから穏やかに去った。３２その日、イサクのしもべたちがきて、自分たちが掘った井戸について彼に告げて言った、「わたしたちは水を見つけました」。 ３３イサクはそれをシバと名づけた。これによってその町の名は今日にいたるまでベエルシバといわれている（創世記２６章２６節―３３節）。
イサクが思いもしないことが起こりました。この一文は「時に」と言う言葉で始まっていますから、かつてイサクが井戸を横取りされ、各地を行き巡っていた時からどれくらいの年月が経ってからのことかは分かりません。しかし、そのような試みの日を送っている時に、かつて自分とその一族を追い出したぺリシテの王、アビメレクとその仲間達がイサクのもとに来たというのです。かって自分を迫害した者が何しにきたのか。また何かいいがかりをつけられるのか。イサクは彼らに言いました「あなたがたは私を憎んで、あなたがたの中から、わたしを追い出されたのに、どうしてわたしの所に来られたのですか」
それに対して彼らはこう答えたのです「我々は主があなたと共におられるのを、はっきり見ましたので、今、我々の間、すなわち我々とあなたとの間に一つの誓いを立てて、あなたと契約を結ぼうと思います。我々はあなたに害を加えたことはなく、ただ良い事だけをして、安らかに去らせたのですから、あなたは我々に悪いことをしてはなりません。まことにあなたは主に祝福された方です」。
彼らの口から出た言葉は「我々は主があなたと共におられるのをはっきりと見ました」ということでした。つまり、彼らは自ら追い出した者たちが、ゼロから別の所で生活を始め、そこでも色々なもめごとに巻き込まれているというようなことを風の便りで聴いてはいるけれど、しかし、彼らが行く先々で神様はイサクを祝福しておられるということも認めたというのです。そう、かつての敵が認めたのです。「我々は主があなたと共におられるのをはっきりと見た」と。
詩篇８４篇１１節には私達にとって大きな慰めとなる約束が記されています「主なる神は日です。盾です。主は恵みと誉とを与え、直く歩む者に良い物を拒まれることはありません。万軍の主よ、あなたに信頼する人はさいわいです」ここで神様は良い物を拒まれることはないといわれています。まさしくイサクが父から譲り受けた信仰により、アブラハムの神はイサクの神ともなり、神の前に直く歩もうとしているイサクを祝福したのです。
イサクは悪に対して善でそれに打ち勝ちました。そして、それは神に喜ばれることでした。主にある皆さん、悪に善で打ち勝つことはとても難しいことです。そして、その時に私達に不可欠なことこそが信仰なのです。そうです、信仰なくして悪に善が勝つなんてことを考える事はできないのです。あのキング牧師が脅迫を受け、投獄をされていた時、彼はそれらに対して無暴力、すなわち善をもって戦い続けたのです。あの戦いはキング牧師の倫理観や精神力によってなされたものではなくて、キング牧師の神に対する信仰だったのです。歴史家はそのようには言いませんでしょう。しかし、私達は確信します。この国のあの公民権運動は信仰による勝利だったと。
皆さんの日常生活にも色々なことがありますでしょう。ある牧師が言いましたように１０年毎にもうダメだと思われるような時がめぐってくる、それが私達の人生です。しかし、その時に私達は神様から与えられている信仰を用いていますか。その信仰はあなただけのものではありません。その信仰をして、あなたの家族はその信仰を継承し、あなたに敵対する者までがあなたは神に祝福されている者だと言わしめる、それが私達の信仰です。今日、こうしてこの地で皆さんとこの信仰の旅路を共に歩ませていただいていること、これに勝る喜びはありません。お祈りしましょう。
When faith is passed down to the next generation

I would like to talk about Isaac today. Isaac is God’s promised child and his parents, Sarah and Abraham, waited for his birth for a long time. I already talked about Abraham through past four Sundays. The Bible doesn’t talk about Isaac very much compared to his father Abraham or his sons Esau and Jacob. He seems to be less important in the Bible. But we can see that he surly had same strong faith like Abraham. Today I want to talk about Isaac’s faith that was passed down from Abraham.
First of all, there was the incident in Isaac’s life that will never be forgotten. What was it? I want to read the Bible verses written about this incident.
1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. (Genesis 22:1-9)
When I am at the dentist, I have to lie down on a reclining chair for a treatment. There is a big light over my head and my dentist looks into my mouth. During a treatment, as I feel drowsy, my mouth will close naturally. Whenever it happens, the dentist tells me to open my mouth. But I feel too sleepy to keep opening my mouth. Finally, the dentist put a tool like a stick into my mouth to keep my mouth open. I feel so sorry to bother him. But I can’t help falling asleep again because it is so comfortable.
Isaac’s situation was not like me feeling drowsy on a chair at a dentist. According to the Bible, it was very tense. Isaac was bound and was laid down on the firewood on the altar. Then his loving father was there with a knife raised overhead. We can only imagine what their expressions looked like. But we are sure that Isaac will remember this incident for the rest of his lifetime. It was a horrendous experience, and it could have given him mental trauma throughout his life. It is written in Genesis 22.
10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” (Genesis 22:10-14)
The Bible says that Abraham found a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he sacrificed this ram as a burnt offering instead of his son Isaac. Because of that, the saying “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided” became famous.
This incident might have been a trauma to Isaac. But at the same time, I believe it was a time for Isaac’s faith to deepen and to become strong like Abraham, his father’s. When children watched the parents being tested how much they trust in God in a desperate situation, they are deeply impressed by the parent’s confidence and trust in God. It shows whether their faith is true or not at the critical situation like this.
I was a pastor’s child. After the Second World War when Japan was totally destroyed, many of the parents of my generation became Christians. They were the generation who gave all their efforts to the ministries and missions. At that time, there was no substantial theological education in Japan like today. But they had passion. They put their hearts into the Lord and the churches. They served the Lord enthusiastically but they neglected their families.
Sometimes their eagerness brought problems. Many pastors’ kids rebelled against their parents who devoted themselves only to their ministries. Many lost faith. It is really sad.
But those parents’ favorite saying was this passage, “on the mountain of the Lord it will be provided”. When children complained about their needs, parents always replied by saying “on the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Children predicted parents’ answers and grumbled about it. However, they witnessed many times that their needs were met in a marvelous way. As I told you, some of them lost their faith. But there were also many children who accepted the faith from the parents and became pastors. Yes! They understood the truth in parents’ faith when parents took God as the most important priority, even more important than their children.
It is terrifying to see a father try to bring down his knife on his own child. Isaac knew this fear more than anybody else. He knew how much his father looked forward to his birth. He also knew why his father tried to bring down his knife on him because he submitted to God’s word. Isaac must have engraved in his heart his father’s seriousness in God and the belief that the Lord would provide the way to escape from this critical situation.
Many years passed after this incident. Isaac had his own family and faced many problems. It is at this time when Isaac put his faith from his father into practice. Let’s read Genesis chapter 26 verse 12 to 23.
12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him. 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy. 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him. 15 So all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth. 16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.” 17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them. 19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek,[a] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[b] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[c] saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.” 23 From there he went up to Beersheba.
God blessed Isaac. But some people were jealous of him because of God’s blessings. Human nature hasn’t changed for a long time. Because of this, he had to leave his land several times. He dug wells which were life line for his family. But whenever he did, he got involved in some conflicts. The Bible says that he didn’t fight with them but left the land and moved to different places.
The Bible is not talking about a subject that has nothing to do with us. Here it is talking about livestock and wells. But replace them with your achievement, your working place, and your position at work, or apply your family there. You can see the situation more clearly, can’t you?
I can imagine how hard it must have been for them to dig a deep well since it is difficult for us to dig even a small hole. When you think about all the labor to dig a deep well, losing their well is a big loss. It is very natural for people to fight for the well. However, Isaac found another place to dig whenever his well was taken. I can imagine that Isaac probably handed over the well to people who picked a fight for it.
His character is like his father Abraham. When Abraham talked about their lands with Lot, his nephew, Abraham gave the choice to Lot. Lot chose Sodom which looked good and was well watered. So Abraham chose another land. We know that Lot had awful experience later in this land which seemed to be very good. Abraham gave Lot a priority to choose. Do you know what God told Abraham after Lot chose the land?
14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[a] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” (Genesis13:14-17)
God who told Abraham this also said to Isaac who gave up his well and left from his land. 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.” 25 Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well. (Genesis 26:24-25)
Brothers and sisters in Christ. God told to Isaac. “I am the God of your father Abraham.” Isaac’s faith was not different from Abraham. Because he accepted his faith from his father, God who blessed Abraham also wanted to bless Isaac.
God told Isaac not to be afraid and encouraged him, when he could not settled down but was moving around because his wells were taken. He must have looked like miserable and a loser. How did he feel when he fell in this situation? I think he had faith to trust God and left everything to Him. He also believed that God would lead him to his best. Yes, this is the true meaning of “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided” What he experienced with his father on the mountain became his foundation of his life. Since he learned the meaning of this word with his life, he was sure that God would take care not only him but his whole family. He had confidence. No matter what was taken away from him or no matter what he lost, he knew God will provide the best for him.
If we have faith like him, we will relax our shoulders because we don’t have to do everything by ourselves. We put God first and do what we can do each day. Then we can leave other things to God and serve the Lord. God will reach his hand to help us.
Don’t you think that we sometimes rely only on our own efforts as if there is no God? Doing nothing is also a problem and the Bible doesn’t tell us that’s right. But sometimes we forget to rely on God while making our endless effort. We lose the faith of “on the mountain of the Lord it will be provided’. Instead, we tend to climb a mountain crushed by the heavy load we are carrying.
This incident related with Isaac did not finish here. God led him to something he never imagined. It is written from verse 26.
26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces. 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?” 28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.” 30 Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully. 32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[a] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[b](Genesis 26:26-33)
Something Isaac had never expected happened. We don’t know how long he moved from place to place after his well had been taken. The Bible writes about this period of time just as “meanwhile”. During his trial time, Abimelek, the king of Philistine, who once kicked out his family from his land came to Isaac with his people. Why did they come to see him although they persecuted him? Did they come to make a false accusation? So Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?” Then they answered. “We saw clearly that the LORD was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the LORD.”
He said, “We saw clearly that the LORD was with you” The Philistines heard rumor about Isaac’s families, and how they were kicked out by them but still started their life from a scratch in different places even with some troubles. But they also saw that God blessed them wherever they moved. The Philistines, once their enemy, became their witness. They said, “We saw clearly that the LORD was with you”
In Psalms chapter 84 verse 11, it is written about the promise to comfort us. “11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.” It says God doesn’t withhold good things. God of Abraham became God of Isaac because Isaac accepted faith like his father. So God blessed Isaac who walked blamelessly before God.
Isaac overcame evil with goodness. This pleased God. Brothers and sisters in Christ, it is hard to defeat evil with goodness. Without faith, it is impossible to defeat evil with goodness. When Martin Luther King received a threat and was thrown into the jail, he kept fighting without violence. He fought with goodness. He didn’t fight with his ethical values or his perseverance but with his faith in God. Historians don’t admit it. But we are sure that the civil right movement in this country was a victory through the faith.
Many things happen in our life. One pastor said that a critical incident happens once every ten years. This is our life. Do you use your faith given from God in such a time of trial? The faith is not only for you. Your family has faith through your faith. Seeing your faith, even people who has hostility to you may say that you are blessed by God. This is our true faith. There isn’t anything better than walking together in spirit with you brothers and sisters. Let’s pray.

２）３節にはアブラハムが「朝早く起きて」イサクを捧げるべく出かけたと書かれています。なぜ、アブラハムは神様のこのような命令に即、従うことができたのでしょうか。
３）あなたは「主の山には備えあり」ということを経験したことがありますか。マタイ６章３３節は私達に何を語りかけてくるのでしょうか。
４）創世記２６章１２節‐２３節を読みましょう。ここにはその後のイサクの日々が記されています。ここに記されているような理不尽な経験をあなたはしたことがありますか。そのような時、あなたはどのようにその問題に対処しましたか。イサクはどう対処しましたか。
５）なぜ、イサクはその時、相手を打ち負かして、納得させるようなことをせずに、かえって自ら身を引いたのでしょうか。イサクの心にその時あった信仰はどんなものだったでしょうか、かつて彼が命をかけて「主の山に備えあり」ということを体験したことは、この時の彼の言動に影響したと思いますか。
６）このイサクに対して、驚くべきことが起きました。（創世記２６章２６節―３３）。なぜ人々は２８節に「我々は主があなたと共におられるのを、はっきり見ました」というような思いにいたったのだと思いますか？私達が「主の山に備えあり」という信仰にたっていく時に、私達の日々の生活はどのように変わっていくでしょうか。
