世の中には社会的には成功しているという人がたくさんいます。多くの人達に知られ、彼らの手腕は称賛されます。しかし、彼らの家庭については誰も知りません。ビジネスにおける顧客は満足し喜んでいるのですが、その家庭では涙を流している者がいることを知る人はいません。１０００人の部下を指導しておりながら、家族の関係が壊れてしまっているということあるのです。
仕事は自分で選んだもの。家族は直々に神様から与えられているもの。この違いは大きいのです。

「家に仕え、国に仕える」

一か月のサバティカルの間、留守の間の教会をお守りくださり、ありがとうございました。この間、大川先生、また中島先生をはじめ、主にある兄弟姉妹が教会でのミニストリーをお支えくださいましたことを心より感謝しております。
いくつかの思いがけないことが起きた一月でありましたが、それらのことを通しても普段はなかなかじっくりと向き合うことができない課題に向き合うことができました。サバティカルに入りますとすぐに妻の弟夫婦の娘が亡くなったとの連絡が入り、急きょ、大分を訪ね、日本にいる間に熊本や大分での地震もあり、以後、私達は被災地から目を離すことができずにいます。被災して避難している方達が心身ともに休める場所を確保することができますように、そしてそれぞれの町の復興がなされますようにと祈ります。
受難週とイースターが三月の末にありましたので、私達の年間の標語となっております「健やかな時も、病む時も、豊かな時も、貧しき時も」のシリーズに即したメッセージは３月１３日以来となります。そこで今日はその続きとなりますサムエル記上を見ていきたく願っております。この書はサムエルというイスラエルの預言者の名前からとられたものであり、神様は彼を用いてイスラエルの初代の王、サウロ、そして二代目の王、ダビデがたてられていく様がこのサムエル記上には記されています。今日はこのところからまず最初に「国を治める」ということ、そして二つ目に「家を治める」ということについてお話しします。
国を治める
サムエル記は年代としては士師記の後の時代となりますので、士師記とサムエル記には継続した関連があります。すなわち、士師記はその書を閉じるにあたり『その頃、イスラエルには王がなかったので、おのおの自分の目に正しいと見るところをおこなった』（士師記２１章２５節）と記し、そんな４００年におよんだ士師の時代、各々が自分の目に正しいと見えるところを行ったと結果、そのことに限界を感じたイスラエルの民が今度はサムエル記において『今、ほかの国々のように、われわれをさばく王を、われわれのために立ててください』（サムエル記上８章５節）と自分達に王を与えてくれと願い求めている様が記されているのです。
それまでのイスラエルは各部族の族長がそれぞれの部族をさばき、または士師というリーダーがある期間、断続的に民を導いてきました。ですから、王が国を司る「王政」というものは彼らにとって初めての制度ということになりました。そして、それから長い間、この王政がイスラエルの中心に据えられていくことになるのです。
今、私達の暮らす世界は日々、変化しています。アメリカ、日本、世界の動向というものがこれからどうなっていくのかということを私達は注意深く見ていかなければなりません。おりしもアメリカでは今年、大統領選があり、この国のリーダーを私達は決めていきます。それは王が国を司るということとは異なりますが、確かに大統領はこの国のかじ取りのために大きな権力を託されるわけですから、私達が当時のイスラエルが置かれていた状況から得る知恵は多いのです。
士師の時代、人々は各々、自分の目に正しいと見るところをおこないました。そして、それは今日のアメリカも日本も同じなのです。私達は「自由」の名のもとに自分がよかれと思うことをなすことを良しとする世界に生きています。このことは確かに私達の自由の行使なのですが、この自由は私達が大切にすべきものを締め出すというようなことにも用いられているのです。
かつてこの国の公立学校には祈りがあり、公共の場所にも十戒が掲げられていたといいます。しかし、今やそのようなものは一切なくなりました。否、そのように特定の信仰を掲げるということはよろしくないと、丘の上に無言で立っている十字架すらも撤去しようとする訴訟が起きているような現状です。今日、私達はこの国の建国の精神を忘れ、自分に益となるもの、自分の願いをかなえてくれるもの、自分のフラストレーションを軽減してくれるもの、そのようなことを願い、私達の上に立つリーダーを選んでいます。私達はそんなこの国のリーダーを半年後に知ることになります。
そもそもなぜイスラエルの民達は王政というものを取り入れることを願ったのでしょうか。各々が自分の目に正しいと思うことをやっていたという４００年の間に、さすがに彼らはそれでは国は成り立たないということに気がついたのでしょう。彼らは自分たちに王を与えてくれとサムエルにその希望を告げたのです。そして、この背景にはぺリシテという彼らの敵の存在がありました。
ぺリシテ人とは当時、地中海の沿岸を占拠している民族で、その支配を広げようと虎視眈々とイスラエルを狙っていました。実際に彼らはとても強力な軍事力を有していました。このような強敵に向き合うにあたり、これまでの士師の時代のようにイスラエルが部族単位で彼らと対峙していたのでは勝ち目はないように民たちには思われ、イスラエル全体をまとめあげてより大きな力でペリシテに対抗しなければならないという思いがイスラエルの民達の間に生まれてきたのです。この状況は今日も変わることがありません。中東地域、アジア地域の動向、そしてこれらに加えてテロリストとの攻防、私達が選ぶこの国のリーダーはこれら諸外国の脅威に向き合い、これから進むべき道を選び、それに向かってリーダーシップをとっていかなければなりません。
こうしてイスラエルの民達の間に「神こそがイスラエルの王」であるという信仰が失われていきました。かつてのイスラエルはこのことによって結束していたのですが、彼らは自分達で自らのことを決めるのではなく、彼らの上に立つ人によってこの国の進む道を決断することを望んだのです。王を立てることにより彼らの間から神様が締め出されていったのです。まさしく、その様は今日、この国で起きていることであります。
その時、イスラエルはどこに向かっているのかという不安も抱えていました。同じように私達も将来に対して不安がないでしょうか。何が起こるのか分からない将来への不安というものは誰でももつものです。自分たちはバラバラで、どこに向かうのか分からない。ある意味、このような危機は信仰に立ち返るチャンスなのですが、イスラエルはそのような時に自分たちを導いてくれる強いリーダーを求めたのです。不安な時代になればなるほど、一見、強行に思えるような政策を進める政治家を求める現代の有様とそれは似ています（かつて強力なカリスマ性と指導力を備え、「日本列島改造」を掲げた総理大臣が日本にはおりましたが、そんなリーダーを待望するような書籍がこの度の訪日の際、本屋に並べられているのをあちこちで見ました）。
当時のイスラエルにおいてこのようなことが起きてきた一つの要因はそれまでイスラエルを導いてきた預言者サムエルが年老いていたということが民の大きな不安となっており（８章５節）、さらに、それはサムエルが年老いていたということだけではなく、その他にも理由があったのです。
このサムエル記の始まりにはエリという大祭司が出てきます。彼はまだイスラエルの民達が王を求める前から４０年にわたりイスラエルをさばいていた指導者でした。大祭司ですから、その指導は国の具体的な事柄のみならず、まさしく霊的なことにまで及びました。その大祭司エリのもとに幼い時から寝泊りして、薫陶を受けて育ったのがサムエルです。
エリは大祭司ですから全てのイスラエル国民に知られている人で、その働きも民を代表して幕屋の至聖所に入るような人でした。しかし、その彼には問題がありました。それは彼の家庭の問題でした。それは彼の二人の息子の問題でした。祭司のはたらきとは世襲でしたから、この息子達も父の跡を継ぐことを望まれていました。しかし、彼らは民が神様に犠牲として捧げる肉を横取りし、そのことに対して民が意見を言うと、それを力づくでも取り上げようと民を脅し（サムエル上２章１２節‐１７節）、またある時は主の宮に仕えている女達と関係をもつような子達だったのです。聖書は彼らを「エリの子らは、よこしまな人々で、主を恐れなかった」（サムエル記上２章１２節）と記しています。そして、エリも大祭司でありながら、神様よりもこの子達を重んじ（２章２９節）、人がこの子達の噂をすることを聞くにおよんで初めて子供を戒め（２章２４節）、さらには、これらの悪事を知りながらも子達を止めることもしなかったのです（３章１３節）。
ですから、神様はこのエリの子達ではなく、エリの後継者としてサムエルを立てたのです。このサムエルがエリに仕えているまだ幼少の時に、神様は夜中に彼を何度も起こし、話しかけます。寝食を共にしていたエリは神様がサムエルに何を伝えようとしているのかサムエルに問います。その時、サムエルが神様から受けたメッセージは「13わたしはエリに、彼が知っている悪事のゆえに、その家を永久に罰することを告げる。その子らが神をけがしているのに、彼がそれをとめなかったからである。14それゆえ、わたしはエリの家に誓う。エリの家の悪は、犠牲や供え物をもってしても、永久にあがなわれないであろう」（サムエル上３章１３節、１４節）というものでした。
このようなことを自分の師に告げることはとても辛いことですが、幼子サムエルはエリにこのことを告げ、エリも弁解の余地が自分にはないことを知っていたのでしょう、その神様の言葉を受け入れたのです。そして、エリもその息子達もこの言葉が言うように悲しい死を迎え、サムエルはエリの跡をついでこのイスラエルを導く指導者となりました。聖書はエリに代わったサムエルについてこのように評価しています「サムエルは育っていった。主が彼と共におられて、その言葉を一つも地に落ちないようにされたので、ダンからべエルシバまで、イスラエルのすべての人は、サムエルが主の預言者と定められたことを知った」（サムエル記上３章１９節、２０節）。そして、このサムエルは後のイスラエルの初代の王、サウロと二代目の王となるダビデに油を注ぐ人物となるのです。
しかし、このサムエルにも問題がありました。何だと思いますか。それはエリと全く同じ問題でした。「サムエルは年老いて、その子らをイスラエルのさばきつがさとした。長子の名はヨエルといい、次の子の名はアビヤと言った。彼らはべエルシバでさばきづかさであった。しかしその子らは父の道を歩まないで、利に向かい、まいないを取って、さばきを曲げた」（サムエル記上８章１節ー３節）。
サムエルは幼少の時に、エリの息子の罪に対する神様の厳しい言葉をエリに伝えたのです。エリの息子がどんな悪事をしていたかということを知っていたのです。師匠であるエリの子達に対する対応を間近に見聞きしていたのです。しかし、そのサムエルの子達も神様に喜ばれるようには育たなかったのです。
先にイスラエルが王を求めたその理由の一つに「サムエルが高齢になっていた」ということをあげましたが、それだけではないとお話しました。それでは他に何があったのでしょうか。その時、イスラエルの長老たちはサムエルに言ったのです「あなたは年老い、あなたの子たちはあなたの道を歩まない。今ほかの国々のように、われわれをさばく王を、われわれのために立ててください」（サムエル記上８章５節）。サムエルの子達は父サムエルと共に、さばき司としてイスラエルの国政に直接、関わっていたのです。もし、彼らが父の信仰をしっかりと受け継いでいたのなら、イスラエルは王を求めずに預言者の言葉を聴き、主を中心として保たれたかもしれません。そして、それはエリとその子達にしても同じことが言えるのです。
皆さん、エリは大祭司、民を代表して幕屋の至聖所に入ることができる唯一の人であり、サムエルの名声は全国に鳴り響き、彼は国の王達に油を注ぎ、その王としての任職を神の前に祈るような人です。彼らは国について論じる資格があり、国家の行く末にも影響を与えるような人達だったのです。しかし、この二人ともがその家庭に問題を抱えていたのです。国政に関わるような人でありながら、彼らは一番、身近なわが子を育てることができなかったのです。
世の中には社会的には成功しているという人がたくさんいます。多くの人達がそのことを知り、彼らの手腕は称賛されます。しかし、誰もその彼らの家庭のことは知りません。ビジネスにおける顧客は満足し喜んでいるのですが、その家庭では涙を流している者がいることを誰も知りません。１０００人の部下を指導しながら、数人の家族の関係が壊れてしまっているということあるのです。
この度、１３歳となる姪の突然の死を通して教えられました。弟夫婦にはこの姪以外にもう一人、七歳の娘がいます。彼らは４月４日、まだ春休みであったということもあり、近所のファミリーレストランで食事をとり、そしてお花見に行きました。花見ができる場所で、姪は自分は車でやすんでいると言って家族を離れている間に、彼女は天に召されました。弟夫婦は言っておりました。「あのファミレスでの食事が最後の食事となりました」。そう、彼らが食事をしていた時、その二時間後に起こることなど誰も考えませんでした。しかし、彼らが言うように確かにその食事は最後の食事となったのです。時にこのようなことが私達の間で起こるのです。そして、このようなことを予め察知する能力を私達は有していないのです。私達は一時間後に何が起こるかということも知らずに生きているのです。このことはあの大地震の状況にも当てはまるでしょう。あの地震の前日にそのことを察知していた人は誰もいないのです。そして、いったいどれだけの人が今、「あの時があの人との最後の別れとなったのだ」ということを悲しんでいることでしょうか。私達には「失ってはじめて分かるもの」が数多くあるのです。私達がこの地上で生きる限り、このようなことを私達は避けることはできないのです。
「家族を養うためなんだから仕方ないだろう」「そんなことを言っていられない、俺は忙しいんだ」「それは価値観の問題だ」と言われれば、まさしくそのとおりです。しかし、私達が信仰の目でこれらのことを見つめるのなら一つの事実に気がつきます。それは「自分の仕事は自分で選んだものである」ということであり、それに対して「家族は神様が私達に与えてくださったものである」ということなのです。そう考えますのなら、私達が自らの仕事を理由に家庭をないがしろにする理由はありません。そして、私達の家庭が主にあって育まれるのなら、実はそのことこそ、私達がどんなに大きな事業を成し遂げることよりも大切なことをしているのであり、このことこそがこの世界に大きな影響を与えていくことになるのです。
歴史に「もし」はありませんが、もし、エリやサムエルが家庭を治めることができたら、イスラエルは王を立てる必要がなかったかもしれません。このように私達の家庭と国は断絶しているのではなくて、それはつながっているのです。確かに一つ一つの家庭は小さなものであります。しかし、その家庭こそが私達の世界の最小単位の社会であり、その社会の集まりこそが国家なのです。「世界平和」が叫ばれますが、このことの実現は「神と共にある家庭における平和」の先にあるということに多くの私達は気がついていないのです。
主にある皆さん、それにしましても、あえて言うまでもなく、このことは何と私達にとって大きなチャレンジなのでしょうか。まさしく「主よ、誰がこのような役目にに当たることができましょうか」という思いがします。このことは神様の知恵と力と愛がなければ全うすることなどできないのです。ですから、私達は日ごとに主の前に、必要な助けを求めようではありませんか。過ぎてしまったことを全て修復することは難しいかもしれません。しかし、大切なのはこれからなのです。エリもサムエルもこのことにおいてどんなに悩んだかと思うのです。私達の家庭環境はそれぞれ異なりますが、私達はエリとサムエルの痛みを無にすることがないように、このことからしっかりと教訓を得ようではありませんか。
今日はイスラエルの新しい国のかたちについて、その背後にある人間の心についてお話しました。その王政にいたる民の心を知ることにより、今、私達が国民として属している国について、また世界中の国々について、まさしく聖書を通して、それらを見直すことができます。聖書を神の言葉として信じている私達にはこのことが託されているのです。このように聖書に向き合っていきますと私達が抱えている問題の本質というものが見えてくるのです。私達なぜ、そのようなことが起きているのか、その背後にある人間の心を見つめなければなりません。そして、そのような国に住む私達はどのように生きるべきかをしっかりと決断しなければなりません。私達は現在、神を閉め出そうとしているこの世界の現実をしかと見つめなければなりません。サムエル記を読んでいきますのなら、王政が民にもたらしたものがどんなものであるかを知ることが出来ます。その歩みを知るのならば、私達がこれからこの国で見聞きすることも驚き怪しむようなことではないのです。既に聖書にはそのことが書かれているからです。
そして、同時にイスラエルという国が直面していた変化の時に、聖書はその渦中にいた者達の家庭に目を注いでおられたことを忘れてはなりません。人は大きな夢をもちます、国を自ら動かしたり、会社をもち、経営するというようなこと、新しいプロジェクトに対して辞令をいただくことは私達を魅了することでありましょう。しかし、それ以上に神様から直々に託されている者達に私達の心を向けることはもっと大切なことなのです。
ゆえに今日のタイトルは「家に仕え、国に仕える」としました。そう、どちらも私達にはとても大切なことです。でも、そこにあえて順序をつけたのです。国の行く末がどのようなかたちを形成していくかということは、一つ一つの家庭の中心に主なる神様を置いていくことにかかっているからです。「国の情勢がいい時も、悪い時も、将来を安心して展望できる時も、これからどうなるのかと不安が心に広がる時も」、私達が主にあって日々、なすべきことは昔も今も変わらないのです。お祈りしましょう。

“Serve Our Household and Country”
Thank you very much for taking care of the church while I was away on one month of sabbatical. I especially appreciate the support of Rev. Okawa and Rev. Nakajima, as well as the brothers and sisters of God who took the initiative to continue the church’s ministries during the time I was away.
During this month, many things occurred which I could not have ever been prepared for. During my month long sabbatical, I faced numerous unimaginable challenges that under normal circumstances I would not have faced. Right after my sabbatical began, I was informed that my brother-in-law’s daughter passed away. Immediately after I heard the bad news, I went to Ooita pref. to pay my respect. While I was still in Japan there were earthquakes in the Kumamoto pref. and Ooita pref. which the people are still experiencing as I speak. I pray that the many people who evacuated from their homes as a result of the earthquakes have been able to secure a safe place to rest physically and mentally, as well as the restoration of the affected cities and individual homes.
Since we took a break from our series during Holy Week and Easter at the end of March, I will be continuing the series that I left off on March 13th which is based on of this year’s slogan, “In times of health, in times of malady, in times of prosperity, in times of poverty.” Please take look at the book of 1 Samuel for today’s message. In this story, God used Samuel, who was Israel’s prophet for king Saul and his successor David. Today, I would like to first talk about managing a country then transition to managing one’s home.
The book of Samuel is a chronological sequel to book of Judges.
That is why at the close of Judges, it is written, “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.”( Judges 21:25) During the era of Judges the people of Israel did as they pleased, but after 400 years they felt that they could not go on living they way they were, so in the book of Samuel they pleaded with Samuel for a king. “They said to him, ‘You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead[b] us, such as all the other nations have.’”(Samuel 8:5)
Above were written about Israelites to entreat king for themselves.
Before Saul became the King of Israel, the nation was governed by the heads of the tribes of Israel and also governed intermittently by people called the judges. When Saul became king, it was the first time the nation of Israel would be unified under a monarchy. From then on, this monarchy would be at the center of how the nation of Israel ruled itself.
Presently, our world changes on a daily basis. The United States’, Japan’s, and the world’s growing trends are something that we must keep a careful eye on.
This year there is a presidential election-taking place here in the U.S.; we are choosing our nation’s leader. Although, the United States is not a monarchy like ancient Israel, the president has the authority to direct the immense amount of power our country holds, so we can still learn from the mistakes and successes of the Israelites.
During the era of the judges, people governed their lives and beliefs individually. Presently, the citizens of both the United States and Japan do the same thing. We live in a world in which we are free to live our lives according to what we believe. However, this freedom that we find ourselves surrounded by is causing us to lose sight of what should be most important to us.
In this country we used to allow prayer in schools, and the Ten Commandments were respected and displayed in public places. However, presently those values and beliefs are almost non-existent. Furthermore, we are not even allowed to mention god no matter what religion you may believe. It has gotten to the point in which a simple cross on a hill results in a lawsuit for its removal. Today, we have forgotten the beliefs that founded our nation, and instead pick leaders whose positions we can personally gain from in an effort to make our lives easier. With this in mind, in six months we will find out who will be the next leader of this nation.
Why did the Israelites want to be united by a monarchy? After 400 years of individualistic governing of themselves, the Israelites realized that division was not beneficial for the country, so they asked Samuel to provide them with a king. The underlying reason for their desire to unify Israel with a single king was the presence of the their greatest enemy the Philistines.
During that time, the Philistines occupied the Mediterranean coast and were trying to extend their territory east into Israel. At the time the Philistines commanded a very formidable military. The Israelites believed it would not be wise to face such a strong opponent while divided into tribes. This is why amongst the Israelites the idea of unification was brought forward. The circumstance has not been changed for today in our society. In the recent trends of the Middle East and Asia, with our global war on terror our elected leader must lead us in the face of the menace of other foreign countries and choose right direction for his country.
Because of this, the Israelites lost faith in their God as the true King of Israel. The Israelites used to be bound together because of their faith in God. With the absence of God as their leader, the Israelites wanted someone who would make decisions for them. With the establishment of a king, the Israelites removed the role of God as the leader from the country. What happened to the Israelites is the exact same thing that is happening to us today in our own country.
At this time, the Israelites felt very uneasy with the direction they were heading. Likewise, in modern times, don’t we all worry about our future? We all have the fear of not knowing what will happen in the future. We are disorganized and lack a sense of direction. This uneasiness, lack of organization and direction may be the catalyst for a return to faith in God. But, the Israelites, instead of returning to God, wanted a man, a strong leader who would lead them. Likewise in this modern era, the more the times become uncertain the more people look to political leaders who have strong policies. (When I visited Japan this time, I saw a bestseller in bookstores everywhere. The book describes the type of leader the Japanese covet. One such leader used to be the Prime Minister of Japan. He was very charismatic, had strong leadership skills and was held up an idea of “Structural Altering of the Japanese Islands”.)
In those days in Israel, people wanted strong leader because they were worried about Samuel’s old age but not only that also there was the other reason.
At the beginning of the book of Samuel, there was a high priest by the name of Eli. 40 years before the Israelites desired a King, Eli judged the Israelites and led them. Because he was the High Priest of Israel not only did he solve problems related to the country, he also lead his people in spiritual matters. In addition, Eli apprenticed Samuel.
Because Eli was the High Priest of Israel, all the Israelites knew him. He was responsible for representing the people of Israel to God. However, Eli had a problem that had to do with his household – his two sons. As the sons of Eli, the two were next in line to become High Priests. However, the sons would take offerings of meat dedicated to God for themselves. When the people commented about their actions the brothers would threaten them and forcibly take their offerings for themselves. These sons also had nefarious relations with the female servants of the shrine. The Bible says, “Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord.” (1 Samuel 2:12) Even though Eli was the High Priest, he favored his sons more than God (1 Samuel 2:29) When Eli heard of what his sons were doing; he gave them an initial warning against their wrongdoings. (1 Samuel 2:24) However, his sons continued to act against God and Eli did nothing to stop them. (1 Samuel 3:13).
This is why God placed Samuel as the inheritor of Eli’s position instead of Eli’s sons. When young Samuel was serving under Eli, God would often wake Samuel in the middle of the night to talk to him. Eli asked Samuel what God said to him. The message that God gave to Samu

However, even Samuel had a problem of his own. What do you think that was? He had the same exact problem as Eli. “When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders.[a] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba. 3 But his sons did not follow his ways.” (1 Samuel 8:1-3)
When Samuel was younger he told Eli about God’s stern words about Eli’s sons’ sin. Samuel knew the wickedness that Eli’s sons did. He also saw how his teacher Eli treated his sons on the matter. Yet, Samuel’s sons did not grow in the way that God found pleasing.
I have said previously that one of the reasons the Israelites wanted a King was because Samuel grew old, but that was not the only reason why. So what do you think the other reason was for this desire? This is what the Elders of Israel said to Samuel, “5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead[b] us, such as all the other nations have.”(1 Samuel 8:5)
el was 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,[a] and he failed to restrain them. 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘the guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’” (1 Samuel 3:13-14) It was very hard for Samuel to tell his teacher Eli what God said, but young Samuel told Eli about God’s message. Eli knew that he had no excuse for God’s punishment and accepted God’s judgment. As God foretold to Samuel, Eli and his son died as a result of their actions. Samuel took the position of High Priest and became the leader of the Israelites. The Bible states “19 The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord.” (1 Samuel 3:19-20) After that time, Samuel became the person that would dedicate the first King of Israel, Saul an
Samuel’s sons were working with their father in the political situation of Israel. If they followed their father’s belief the Israelites would not have wanted a king. Instead they would have listened to the words of their prophets and placed God in the center of their lives. This would have applied to Eli and his sons as well.
Brothers and sisters, Eli was the High Priest, he represented the Israelites and was the only person who could enter the Holy of Holies and Samuel’s reputation was renowned throughout Israel as the dedicator of the kings with oil and prayer as he appointed the kings to their posts of God. These men had the right to debate about matters of the country and influence the nation’s fate. But, in spite of their positions the two had a common problem in their households. Although they had very important position in the government of their country, they could not take care of the thing closest to them, which were their own children.
In today’s society there are many people who are successful. Many people recognize their success and praise them for it. However, most people don’t know the condition of the successful men’s households. Society only knows the success of the businesses but do not know the cost in tears within the households. A businessman who leads a thousand subordinates successfully may not have a good relationship with the people of his family.
My niece’s sudden death taught me a lesson. My brother-in-law has another daughter who is 7 years old. It was April 4th, still during spring break. They went to a restaurant to eat, then went to view the cherry blossoms. My niece told her family that she wanted to view the cherry blossoms from the car where she could rest. It was during that time alone in the car that she went to heaven. My brother-in-law told me, “ It was the last supper with my daughter”. After eating dinner it did not occur to them that 2 hours later their daughter would pass away, that dinner would be her last dinner. He accepted that indeed it was their last dinner with her. Sometimes, things like this happen among us. Since we do not have the ability to foresee our future we live without knowing what will happen to us even an hour from now. For example, take the recent earthquake in Japan, nobody knew the earthquake was coming. I thought, “Many people may have regrets because that was last time they would see someone”. Often after losing something we realize the value of the lost thing. As long as we live on the earth these kinds of things are inevitable.
Often we hear, “I cannot help it because I have to provide my family,” or, “I am so busy that I do not have time for it,” or, “ My values are different from yours,” yes, these are important to consider. But if we look at things through the eyes of faith, we will realize that, “We chose the jobs ourselves” and “the family you have, God has given to you”. If we understand this based on our faith, there is no reason that we should use our job as an excuse to neglect our family. Raising our family with the belief in the existence of God is the more important than accomplishing something big in business. This idea is certain to have a big impact on the world.
There is no such a phrase as, “what if “ in history; however, what if Eli and Samuel could have managed their families, then the Israelites might not have needed a king. In this manner, our families and countries are not to be broken apart, but are to be tied together. Certainly, each family is small in comparison to the country, but the collection of these small units is what makes up our country. Nowadays, people cry out for “World Peace” , but nobody is aware that the implementation of “World Peace” will not be possible unless we pursue the belief that “peace exists in families that God is present in”.
Everybody who believes in God knows that placing God at the center of one’s family all the time is easier said than done. No doubt, I will think “God, who is able to maintain peace in his family all the time?” It is impossible to accomplish/to fulfill anything without God’s wisdom, strength and love. Therefore, let us commune with God every day and seek necessary aid from God. It might be difficult to restore the past, but what is important is the future. Eli and Samuel must have worried about their families. Our family backgrounds are all different, but we should not overlook the grief of Eli and Samuel, rather we should learn from it.
Today, I talked about Israel’s new form of government and the change in the conditions of the human heart. By learning from the monarchical system and the heart of the Israelites, we can now improve our own country and all the nations in the world through the Bible. We, believers of God and the Bible, have been entrusted with the Bible and are to live by it. By reading the Bible, we can see the truth and nature of the problems we have. We must consider why these problems occur and take into consideration the condition of the doer’s heart. In this way we must also decide how we are to live our lives in this country. We must look hard at the reality of our own world, which tries to exclude our God. If you read the book of Samuel, then you will understand what the monarchy brought the Israelites. When you know the path that the Israelite chose, then you will not be surprised or doubt what you hear and see regarding anything in the Bible because what happened is already written in the Bible.
And do not forget about when Israel was facing transformation to a monarchy; the Bible already drew attention to Eli and Samuel’s households, which were in turmoil. A man holding a big dream, like governing a country, establishing a company, running a business or being assigned to a new project are all fascinating events for anyone. However, the most important thing for us to do is to turn our hearts toward our own family who are entrusted directly by God.
Consequently, the title of today’s sermon is “ Serve Our Household and Country”. Both things are very important for us. But I purposely placed the title in this order. In order to serve one’s country’s it must be understood that the country’s future is dependent upon the how each and every household puts God into the center of their lives. Whether a country’s condition is good or bad, or the future outlook is secure or not, we must be with God every day. This fact does not change whether in the past or in the present. Let us pray.

３）当時、イスラエルはぺリシテ人の侵略という脅威を抱えていました。今日、私達は諸外国のどのような脅威に向き合っていますか。私達の不安にはどんなものがありますか。
４）大祭司エリの息子達にはどんな問題がありましたか（サムエル上２章１２節‐１７節）。またエリにはどんな問題がありましたか（サムエル上２章２４節、２９節、３章１３節）。
５）大祭司とは民の罪の贖いのために聖所に入ることができる唯一の人でした。そのような社会的なステイタスがありながら、エリの家庭は乱れていました。このようなことはなぜ起きるのでしょうか。
６）エリの跡を継いだサムエルの子達にも問題があり（サムエル記上８章１節ー３節）、このことゆえにイスラエルの民は２）にあるように王を求めるにいたりました。「家庭」と「社会的なはたらき」とはどのように関わっていますか。
７）「自分の仕事に対する責任」と「自分の家庭に対する責任」は何が違いますか。この二つを両立させるためには何が必要ですか。
