私達は「さて、今晩の夕飯はどうしようか」とか「この子を友達の誕生パーティーに連れて行かなくては」とか「今日は歯医者のチェックアップがある」というような忙しない日々を毎日、暮らしており、実際にそんな一週間を過ごして私達は今朝この礼拝に集っているのではないかと思います。
しかし、そんな私達に毎年一度、イエス・キリストが十字架につけられ、葬られ、そして死から甦ったという、とんでもないことを記念するイースターという日がめぐってきます。「とんでもない」というのは、これまたとんでもない言葉ですが、実際に「死からの復活」ということは今に限ったことでなく、イエス・キリストの時代もその後、今日にいたるまで、やはりとんでもない話で、誰も信じなかったのです。ですから「そんなこと信じられっかい！」と思われることは当然のことです。
今日はイースター礼拝でした。大人と子供のゴスペル・フラ、子供達のスキットムービー、洗礼式と盛りだくさんでした。

イースターメッセージ

私達は「さて、今晩の夕飯はどうしようか」とか「この子を友達の誕生パーティーに連れて行かなくては」とか「今日は歯医者のチェックアップがある」というような忙しない日々を毎日、暮らしており、実際にそんな一週間を過ごして私達は今朝この礼拝に集っているのではないかと思います。
しかし、そんな私達に毎年一度、イエス・キリストが十字架につけられ、葬られ、そして死から甦ったという、とんでもないことを記念するイースターという日がめぐってきます。「とんでもない」というのは、これまたとんでもない言葉ですが、実際に「死からの復活」ということは今に限ったことでなく、イエス・キリストの時代もその後、今日にいたるまで、やはりとんでもない話で、誰も信じなかったのです。
マタイ、マルコ、ルカのどれにも出ていますが、マタイ２２章２３節 には「その同じ日、復活はないと言っているサドカイ派の人々が、イエスに近寄って来て尋ねた」とあります。イエス様の時代、ユダヤ人の間で教養もあり、財力も持っていたサドカイ派とよばれた人々は、あの世とか魂とか天使なんてものはありえないと言っていたのです。
また使徒行伝１７章３２節ではイエス様の復活のことを話したパウロに、哲学と学問をこよなく愛していたアテネの人々はあざ笑って「それについては、いずれまた聞かせてもらうことにしようと言った」とあります。さらにそれだけではなくて、初代の信徒の中にさえ復活を信じようとしない人々がいたようであります。コリントの信徒への第一の手紙１５章１２節には「あなたがたの中のある者が、死者の復活などない、と言っている」と書いてあるとおりです。
しかしパウロはそのような状況の中でも、あえてキリストの甦りのことを説き続けました。彼はその核心なる思いをⅠコリント１５章３節から９節に書いています。
３わたしが最も大事なこととしてあなたがたに伝えたのは、わたし自身も受けたことであった。すなわちキリストが、聖書に書いてあるとおり、わたしたちの罪のために死んだこと、４そして葬られたこと、聖書に書いてあるとおり、三日目によみがえったこと、５ケパに現れ、次に、十二人に現れたことである。６そののち、五百人以上の兄弟たちに、同時に現れた。その中にはすでに眠った者たちもいるが、大多数はいまなお生存している。７そののち、ヤコブに現れ、次に、すべての使徒たちに現れ、８そして最後に、いわば、月足らずに生れたようなわたしにも、現れたのである。９実際わたしは、神の教会を迫害したのであるから、使徒たちの中でいちばん小さい者であって、使徒と呼ばれる値うちのない者である。
皆さん、ここでパウロは何と言っていますか。そうです、彼にとって最も大切なこととしてあなたたちに伝えたことは、キリストが私達の罪のために死なれたこと、そして、葬られ、三日目に甦り、多くの者たちに現れたということだというのです。これはパウロにとって、絶対に譲れないもので、実にキリスト教そのものが最も大切なこととしていることも、このパウロがここに記していることであり、それは２０００年来、何ら変わりません。全世界のキリスト教会とそれに属する２０億、すなわちこの世界の三分の一の者達は真顔で、このパウロが譲れないことを、同じく譲ることができないこととして、今も立ち続けています。
パウロはそのことがどんなに自分達にとって不可欠なことであるかということを確認するために、さらに続く１３節－２０節においてこう書いています。１３もし死人の復活がないならば、キリストもよみがえらなかったであろう。 １４もしキリストがよみがえらなかったとしたら、わたしたちの宣教はむなしく、あなたがたの信仰もまたむなしい（Ⅰコリント１５章１３節、１４節）。
１９もしわたしたちが、この世の生活でキリストにあって単なる望みをいだいているだけだとすれば、わたしたちは、すべての人の中で最もあわれむべき存在となる。２０しかし事実、キリストは眠っている者の初穂として、死人の中からよみがえったのである（Ⅰコリント１５章１９節、２０節）。
パウロは言うのです。死からの復活ということがなければ、信仰さえも虚しく、もしそうなら私達は最も憐れな者なのだというのです。先日、来られた森繁さんの証がとても印象的でした。森繁さんはナッシュビルでクリスチャンと呼ばれる若者達と共同生活をしていた時にいつも「Jesus Loves You」なんて言っている若者達が、こんなに若いのに何ともわけの分からないことを言っていて、あわれで、かわいそうに思え、よし自分が彼らを助けてあげようと思って聖書を読み始めたというのです。しかし、その彼が今、パウロが言うところの最も大切なメッセージを携えてどこにでも行き、それを伝えているのです。
さらにパウロはこの後、３２節後半にこんな刹那的なことも書いています。「もし、死人がよみがえらないのなら、「わたしたちは飲み食いしようではないか。明日も分からぬ命なのだ」。
パウロは死がすべての終わりなら、今日を享楽と共に生きようではないかというのです。どっちにしろ死んで土となるのなら、土になってしまう前にこの世で楽しもうではないか。もしかしたら、その最後の日は突如、明日くるかもしれないのだから、少しぐらい人に迷惑をかけようが、誰かが自分のために涙を流したり、傷ついても、今、この時に自分がしたいことをして生きればいいではないかというのです。ニーチェが私達が神なしで生きるのなら、それは虚無に導かれると言いましたが、まさしく彼が言っている世界がここにあります。
しかし、パウロは「キリストの復活」を確信していました。そして、その命に自分もあずかることができることを確信していたのです。ですから、パウロは決して人生を捨てないのです。どんなに苦しいことがあっても希望を失わないのです。自分の体に癒されない病を抱えていても、彼はそれを受け止め人生を生き抜くのです。なぜですか、彼は続く５７節から５８節で書いています。
「わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによってわたしたちに勝利を賜る神に、感謝しよう。わたしの愛する兄弟たち、こういうわけですから、動かされないようにしっかり立ち、主の業に常に励みなさい。主に結ばれているならば自分たちの苦労が決して無駄にならないことを、あなたがたは知っているはずです」
彼は死んで今は墓に眠るキリストに向かってこの言葉を言っているのではないのです。今も生きているキリストゆえに、彼はこの言葉を言っているのです。そして、この確信に立ったのはパウロだけではなかったのです。もし、パウロだけなら、たまたま一人の奇人が思い込みでキリストの復活を信じたと私達は言うことができたでしょう。しかし、この「全ての労苦が決して無駄にならない」というパウロの言葉を支持する者たちは当時、数多くいたのです。どれだけ強い支持をしていたか。その支持の強さがどれだけ自らを犠牲にしているかということで計ることができるとしますのなら、彼らは自らの最も大事な、自分の命を捨ててまでも、このキリストの復活を信じ、それを希望として、己が人生に無駄なことはないと生きたのです。
へブル人への手紙を書いた記者はこれらの人達のことをこう書き記し、説明しています。１３これらの人はみな、信仰をいだいて死んだ。まだ約束のものは受けていなかったが、はるかにそれを望み見て喜び、そして、地上では旅人であり寄留者であることを、自ら言いあらわした。１４そう言いあらわすことによって、彼らがふるさとを求めていることを示している。１５もしその出てきた所のことを考えていたなら、帰る機会はあったであろう。１６しかし実際、彼らが望んでいたのは、もっと良い、天にあるふるさとであった。だから神は、彼らの神と呼ばれても、それを恥とはされなかった。事実、神は彼らのために、都を用意されていたのである。ヘブル人への手紙１１章１３節‐１６節
このような聖書の言葉を思いますときに、私はいつもあの星野富広さんの詩を思い出します。ご存知のように星野富広さんはかつて体育教師をしていました。しかし、今から４０年前、授業の最中に鉄棒から落ち、以後、手足の自由を失いました。そして入院していた病室で洗礼を受けクリスチャンとなりました。その後、口で筆を加え、皆さんもよくご存知のあの絵と詩を書き始めたのです。彼の詩の一節にこのようなものがあります。
「命が一番大切だと思っていた頃、生きるのが苦しかった。命より大切なものがあると知った日、生きているのが嬉しかった」。
キリストの復活の命を己が希望として生きた人々は特別な人達ではなく、私達と同じ普通の人間です。彼らの人生も二つに区分できました。人生のある時までは「命が一番大切だ」と思っていました。そして、その時には内なる苦しみに悩みました。しかし、ある時から彼らの人生は「命より大切なものがある」ことを知りましたした。命より大切なものとは、キリストの復活による永遠の命です。彼らがそのことを知った時から、彼らの日々は喜びと変えられました。その時から、彼ら一人一人の人生は自分が思い描きもしなかったように輝きだしたのです。
イースターは実に自分の命より大切なものがあることを知る、まさしくその時なのです。そして、そのことを知った時に、私達の日々の歩みはこれまでのものとは全く異なったものとなるのです。そこには内なる平安と喜びがあるのです。ですから、皆さん、今日は私達にとって最も嬉しい、喜びの日なのです。お祈りしましょう。

Our
life is very busy and is filled with such routines as: “What do I cook for
dinner?” “I have to take my son to
friend’s birthday party today.” Or “Today, I have a dental checkup.” Perhaps this past week was like that also. And
we are gathered again for this Sunday worship service.
But,
once each year, we have a very special occasion to celebrate an amazing day
called Easter when we commemorate the most amazing event when Jesus was
crucified, buried, and was resurrected from the dead. This most amazing event,
namely that Jesus came back to life after death, was so extraordinary that
people could not believe it, not only in the days of Jesus, not at any time since, and not even today.
Matthew
22:23 mentions the same thing that is mentioned in Mark and Luke also. Namely, ”That same day the Sadducees, who say
there is no resurrection, came to [Jesus] with a question. “ Sadducees were well
educated and were wealthy among the Jewish people in the days of Jesus. They
said there is no afterlife, spirit, or angels.
Acts
17:32 records that when Paul talked about resurrection of Jesus to the people
of Athens, they responded with skepticism: some of
them sneered, and others said, “We want to hear you again
on this subject.” Not only that, even some of the early Christians refused to
believe in the resurrection of Jesus. I Corinthians 15:12 says:” some of you say that
there is no resurrection of the dead”
But,
Paul never gave up and continued to talk about the resurrection of Jesus. His
conviction is recorded in I Corinthian 15:3-9: 3For
what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for
our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that
he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and
that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6After that, he
appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of
whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he
appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8and
last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. 9For I
am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle,
because I persecuted the church of God.
What
is Paul saying here? Paul said what is most important is that Christ died for
our sins, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day, and that he
appeared to many people after that. This was the absolute truth that Paul could
not deny. In fact, the entire faith of the Christians over history of 2000
years has been centered and based upon this same belief. All of the Christian
churches in the entire world, over 2 billion Christians, and one third of the
entire world population believe in the resurrection of Jesus in the same way.
All of them stand by this belief.
Paul
went on to point out how crucial this belief is to us all. See what Paul said
in Verses 13-20: 13If there is no resurrection of the dead,
then not even Christ has been raised. 14And if Christ has not been
raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. (I Corinthians 15:13-14) 19If only for this life we have hope in
Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. 20But Christ has
indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen
asleep. (I Corinthians
15:19-20)
Paul
said that if Christ did not rise from the dead, our faith is meaningless and we
are to be pitied more than all men.
Remember
the musician Mr. Mori who visited our church? He said he used to live in
Nashville with young people who called themselves as Christians and who used to
tell him “Jesus loves you.” Mr. Mori pitied them and thought he could save
these misguided souls. That is why he started studying the Bible in order to
save them. But, these days, Mr. Mori is conveying that most important message
by Paul to the world himself.
Paul
also wrote in Verse 32: If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and
drink, for tomorrow we die.”
Paul
says if death marks the end of everything, why not live today in worldly
pleasure? If we are destined to die and return to dust anyway, why not enjoy
pleasures of this world before that? The end might come suddenly, perhaps
tomorrow. So, why not do what we want and what pleases us — even if it might
bother other people, cause some people to cry, or harm others? Nietzsche said
if we are to live without God, that would take us to nihility. This is exactly what
Paul was talking about.
But,
Paul was convinced about the “resurrection of Jesus Christ.” And he was convinced
that he would also be given the eternal life. That is why he did not give up
his life ever. He did not lose hope even in the most hopeless situations. He
had incurable disease. But he accepted that and lived his life to the fullest.
Why
could he do that? In Verses 57 and 58, he reveals why: 57But thanks be to
God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move
you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that
your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
Paul was not talking to Jesus sleeping in the tomb. He was
talking to Jesus who had risen from the dead. And Paul was not alone in
believing resurrection of Jesus. If Paul was the only person believing this, we
could dismiss him as simply a misfit individual believing in fantasy. But,
there were many, many people back then who also believed that all labor in the
Lord is not in vain. How strong was their conviction? If sacrifices they were
willing to take were any measure of their conviction, they were willing to give
up their own life. They believed in the resurrection of Jesus, they found hope
in it, and they were convinced that their life was not in vain.
The
author of the Letter to the Hebrews describes such people in this way:
13All these people were still living by
faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw
them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens
and strangers on earth. 14People who say such things show that they
are looking for a country of their own. 15If they had been thinking
of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16Instead,
they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed
to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. (Hebrews 11:13-16)
When we read
such Bible verses, we are reminded of the poems Mr. Tomihiro Hoshino wrote. As
you know, Mr. Hoshino was a gym teacher. 40 years ago, he fell off the horizontal
bar and was paralyzed neck down. But, he was baptized during his stay in
hospital, and he learned to write by holding a pen in his mouth. He drew
pictures and wrote poems in that manner. One of his poems says: “My life was hard when I tried to cling on to
life. But, my life was filled with joy when I learned there is something more
precious than life itself.”
These people believed
in the hope of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. They were ordinary people like
us. The life of these people had two stages. During the first stage, they thought
that “life is most important” and they mind was filled with anxiety. But, then, they learned that there is
something more precious than life itself. That is the eternal life given to us through
the resurrection of Jesus. When they learned about this, their life was filled
with joy and happiness. From that moment, their second stage of life was filled
with bright light.
Easter is the
time when we reconfirm that there is something more important than life. And,
when we realize that, our daily life changes completely. Our life is filled
with internal peace and joy. Today is the happiest and joyful day for all of
us.
