私の車にはこの教会にも以前、来てくださった森繁昇さんのＣＤが入っています。その中に「陽の出」と言う歌があり、私は毎朝、この曲を聴きながら教会にきます。そう、それは新しい一日が始まるにあたって、私が教会に来る時の入場行進曲となっているのです。その中にこんな歌詞があります。

私達は無名の羊飼いからイスラエルの二代目の王になりましたダビデが書き残しました詩篇２３篇を見ています。この詩ほど多くの人たちに知られているものはありません。ダビデは母の不義の中、エッサイの八番目の末っ子として生まれました。彼はおそらく親兄弟から気に留められることなく、幼少の時から野原で羊の面倒を見ながら育ったと想像します。一日、誰とも話さずに羊と共にいるというような日常を送り、後になってその時のことを思いつつ、「牧者」を「神」と置き換え、「羊」を「人」と置き換え、この不朽の歌を作ったのです。
1主はわたしの牧者であって、わたしには乏しいことがない。2主はわたしを緑の牧場に伏させ、いこいのみぎわに伴われる。3主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ、み名のためにわたしを正しい道に導かれる。4たといわたしは死の陰の谷を歩むとも、わざわいを恐れません。あなたがわたしと共におられるからです。あなたのむちと、あなたのつえはわたしを慰めます。5あなたはわたしの敵の前で、わたしの前に宴を設け、わたしのこうべに油をそそがれる。わたしの杯はあふれます。6わたしの生きているかぎりは必ず恵みといつくしみとが伴うでしょう。わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう（詩篇２３篇１節－６節）。
今日はこのところから『主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ、み名のためにわたしを正しい道に導かれる』を見ていきたく願っております。まず最初にその前半部分の『主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ』ということを見てまいりましょう。
主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ
この「主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ」を英語聖書は「He refreshes my soul」と書いています。「リフレッシュ」とは「再び生き返らせる」ということです。私達の魂はしおれます。渇きます。しかし、私達の牧者なる主は私達を再生し、渇きを満たしてくださるというのです。
私達は心身ともにリフレッシュを必要とする者です。私達が疲労困憊する時に、私達が倦怠感に包まれる時に私達はリフレッシュが必要です。皆さんはどのようにして自らをリフレッシュしていますか。これまでお話してきましたように、この一節の主語は「主は」となっています。そうです、この詩は「わたしがわたしの魂をリフレッシュする」のではなくて、「主はわたしの魂をリフレッシュする」というのです。主がこのために私達になしてくださることには色々なことがあるでしょう。
最近、朝起きて一人しばらく、バルコニーに出て椅子に座ります。その時、私は携帯も本も持ちません。ただ椅子に座ります。夜のとばりが明けて、刻一刻と空が明るくなってくると、鳥達も起き出します。この鳥達が鳴き始める時というのは修学旅行に行って、皆で大部屋に雑魚寝した時のことを思い起こさせます。朝になりますとあっちから、こっちから起き始めた者達の声が聞こえてきます。それと同じで鳥達があちこちで鳴きだすのです。それはまるで鳥達が朝の挨拶を交わしているようです。「よく眠れたか」とか「今日は暑くなりそうだな」と互いに言葉を交わしているようです。そんな時、主はあの言葉を私の心に思い起こさせてくださいます。そう、主がその言葉をもって私をリフレッシュしてくださる瞬間です。
25それだから、あなたがたに言っておく。何を食べようか、何を飲もうかと、自分の命のことで思いわずらい、何を着ようかと自分のからだのことで思いわずらうな。命は食物にまさり、からだは着物にまさるではないか。26空の鳥を見るがよい。まくことも、刈ることもせず、倉に取りいれることもしない。それだのに、あなたがたの天の父は彼らを養っていて下さる。あなたがたは彼らよりも、はるかにすぐれた者ではないか。27あなたがたのうち、だれが思いわずらったからとて、自分の寿命をわずかでも延ばすことができようか（マタイ６章２５節－２７節）。
私の家の庭には鳥の餌箱があります。そして、その中にある餌はあっと言う間になくなります。鳥達が飛来して奪い合うように食べていくからです。そんな光景を見ていると、数匹の鳥を養うのも大変だなと思います。ましてや、この地にいる全ての鳥が毎日、養われているということ、各々が身を寄せる住処がどこかにあるということ、このようなことに思いがおよぶ時、私と共におられる全能者の偉大さに思いがおよぶのです。
預言者エレミヤもこんな言葉を書き残しています。『22主のいつくしみは絶えることがなく、そのあわれみは尽きることがない。23これは朝ごとに新しく、あなたの真実は大きい』（哀歌３章２２節ー２３節）。
エレミヤは同胞の仲間から、家族からも迫害された涙の預言者でした。彼はそれでも預言者と読んで字のごとく、神から受けた言葉を人々に告げたのですが、その内容は聞く者達には耳障りなもので、語れば語るほど彼は激しい迫害を受けました。彼が一日を振り返る時、その耳にはその日に投げかけられた暴言が生々しくよみがえり、身に迫った危険が思い起こされたことでしょう。
しかし、そんな彼は朝を寄りどころとしたのです。今日も自分は人々の反感を買い、迫害されるだろう、そんなことが容易に想像できる一日の始まり、その朝に主の新しいいつくしみとあわれみを、主の真実の大きさを彼は見出したのです。彼の託された任務は確かに非常に厳しいものでありましたが、しかし、彼の慰めと力の源は朝ごとに彼に与えられ、彼は一日の初めに再生され、与えられている使命を一日、そしてまた一日と成し遂げていったのです。
一晩にして地上の植物は二酸化炭素を酸素に変えるということを私達は知っています。よどんだ部屋の空気の窓が開けられ、室内の空気が入れ代わるように、よどんだ世界の空気は私達がそのことに気を留めずとも、朝毎にきれいにされています。そのことは毎晩（地球の歴史が始まって以来、一日もスキップされることなく）、私達が新しい気持ちで一日を迎えることができるようにと繰り返されているのです。

そんな夜、闇の中に一人身を置くときに、静寂の中から神は私に語りかけます。空に輝く月星を眺めながら、私達の心にはあの詩篇の記者の思いがわいてくるのです。そう、それは主の言葉によって私がリフレッシュされる瞬間です。
3わたしは、あなたの指のわざなる天を見、あなたが設けられた月と星とを見て思います。4人は何者なので、これをみ心にとめられるのですか、人の子は何者なので、これを顧みられるのですか。5ただ少しく人を神よりも低く造って、栄えと誉とをこうむらせ、6これにみ手のわざを治めさせ、よろずの物をその足の下におかれました（詩篇８篇３節ー６節）。
この夜空を見ていると、なんと自分はちっぽけなものなのかと思います。「今、見ている星は光の速さで何十年もかかってたどり着く距離にあるものです」とはよく聞く話で、そのような星を前にして私の８０年はいったい何なのかと思います。そして、その思いが心に芽生えるなら、私の心はこの詩篇の記者と同じ告白へと導かれるのです。主よ「人は何者なので、これをみ心にとめられるのですか。人の子は何もなので、これを顧みられるのですか」。こんなちっぽけな私が何者だから、神様は私をかえりみてくださるのだろうか。
一日の終わり、このように主の前に一人で出、一日を振り返り、その日に主が与えてくださった恵みを思い起こします。そうしますと、あっと言う間に両手からこぼれ落ちるほどの感謝が心に思い起こされるのです。私はこの年になって悟りました。そもそも私達の性質は日毎に与えられている神の恵みを思い起こすようなものではないということを。私達の性質は反対に常に不満と不足を思い起こすのだと。ですから意識的に神の恵みに思いを寄せるということをしなければ、私達はその神の恵みに全く気がつかず、不満と不足が私達の心を占拠するようになってしまうのです。ですから神様が与えてくださった恵みを数えることを私達は心がけるのです。そうしますとその感謝がやがて心を満たしていきます。
そう、その時は主の言葉が私達をリフレッシュしてくださる瞬間です。『33まず神の国と神の義とを求めなさい。そうすれば、これらのものは、すべて添えて与えられるであろう。34だから、あすのことを思いわずらうな。あすのことは、あす自身が思いわずらうであろう。一日の苦労は、その日一日だけで十分である』（マタイ６章３３節‐３４節）。
一日のあのこと、このこと、明日に対する心配、しかしそれらのことを主の前にひとまずリセットし、気持ちを明日に向けます。寝ている間に私達にできることは何もないのですから。しかし、主は私達が眠っている間にも働かれるお方です。そうであるのなら、主にお任せします。この朝晩のひと時、私は主によって心身ともにリフレッシュされます。リセットされます。
リフレッシュとは必ずしも美味しいものを食べるとか、楽しい場所に行くというようなことではないということを最近は学ばされています。「何かをする」ということによって得るリフレッシュではなく、「神の前にある」ということによるリフレッシュの醍醐味を主は教えてくださっているようです。皆さんはいかがですか。どのように主によってリフレッシュしていますか。二つ目の事をお話しします。
み名のためにわたしを正しい道に導かれる。
私達の人生はセンタクの連続です。このセンタクには二つのことがあります。一つ、服を洗う洗濯。まさしく人生は洗濯の連続です。我が家では毎日、一夜にして山ができます。そうです、洗濯の山です。この洗濯は私達が生きる限り、続きます。
そしてもう一つのセンタクは私達の人生は「選択」の連続です。朝、６時に起きるのか、８時に起きるのかから始まり、夕飯に何を食べるのかにいたるまで一日に幾つもの選択をします。友人と外食にでかけ、メニューの中から自分が食べるものを選びます。
ウエイターが自分が選んだ食事、友人が選んだ食事を運んできます。その時に内心、思うことがあります、「あぁーそっちにしておけばよかった」と。そうです、選択を誤った瞬間です。でもこれぐらいならいいです、その時は自分が選んだ食事を楽しみ、次回は友人が選んだものをオーダーすればいいのですから。
しかし、私達が歩んでいる道についてはいかかでしょうか。道を選ぶとはすなわち、私達がどの方向に向かっているかを決めることです。南北にはしるフリーウエイ５と東西にはしるフリーウエイ８では明らかに向かっている方向が違います。そして、この道の選択はその道が行きつく終着点を決めます。フリーウエイ５は私達をオレゴンに導き、フリーウエイ８は私達をアリゾナに導くのです。
まさかオレゴンに行こうと思っている人がフリーウエイ８を選んでしまうことはないでしょう。アリゾナに行こうと思う人がフリーウエイ５に乗ってしまうことはないでしょう。しかし、いかがでしょうか。私達が歩んでいる道はどうでしょうか。その道がどこに向かっていて、どこに行きつくのか、私達は知っているのでしょうか。
道を選ぶということは私達がどこに向かっているかということを決め、私達の終着点はどこなのかということを決めます。私達の前には無数の道があります。今日、私達は人生の方向を微妙に変えうる選択をするのかもしれませんし、微妙ではなく人生を大きく変える選択をするかもしれません。そのことにより私達が向かう方向は変わり、そうなりますと終着点も変わってきます。
こう考えますとこの道の選択というのは私達の人生において最重要課題になると思うのですが、いかがでしょうか。しかし、私達の日々は忙しく、またそんなことを考えるよりももっと別のことに関心があり、私達の思いはこの「道の選択」にはなかなかおよばず、このことがどんなに大切なことであったかということはしばしば後になって気がつくのです。
以前、キャンプに行くべく、息子達とフリーウエイ８を東に向かって走っていました。この道は３０分もはしりますと岩がごつごつとした荒野になってきます。その中をしばらく行きますと北に向かうアンザボレゴに向かう道がでてきます。しかし、その時、私達はその出口を見過ごして通り過ぎてしまいました。これが都会ならいいのです。出口のすぐ後に次の出口がありますから。しかし、その時は一つの出口を見過ごしてから１０分以上、次の出口がなく走り続けました。すなわち、そこから戻ることを考えたら２０分以上、時間をロスしたのです。このロスを私は悔やみました。しかし、それは２０分ですから、いくらでもリカバーできます。
しかし、これが人生となるとどうでしょうか。大きなビジネスプランを立てたり、理想的な家族の姿を思い描くこともいいでしょう。でも、なぜその大前提として私達はそこにたどり着くために、どんな道を歩んでいくのかということを考えずに、行き当たりばったり歩き始めてしまうのでしょうか。私達が直面する多くの問題は私達がこれまでどんな道を歩んできたのか、そして今、どんな道を歩んでいるのかと言うところから生じているのです。エルセントロの町で「ロサンゼルスに行くはずだったのに方向を間違えてしまいました」というドライバーに出会うことはありません。しかし、「こんなはずじゃなかった」という人生を歩んでいる人ならこの世界に無数にいるはずです。
この詩篇２３篇をお話しするにあたり、私は最初に羊である私達について書き記した『私たちはみな、羊のようにさまよい、おのおの、自分勝手な道に向かって行った』（イザヤ５３章６節）という預言者イザヤの言葉をお話ししました。
「自分勝手な道に向かう」とは、各々が自分の行きたい道を選ぶということです。大抵、私達はそのようにして自分の道を選びます。しかし、問題はその道の先にあるものを私達は知りえないということです。箴言１４：１２、１６：２５にはこんな言葉があります『人が見て自ら正しいとする道でも、その終わりはついに死に至る道となるものがある』。自分勝手にこの道こそがと思っていても、その終局は死であるという物騒なことをソロモンは言ったのです。しかし、それは彼の脅しでもなく、大袈裟な言葉でもなく、ソロモンはそのような人達を大勢、見てきたのでしょうし、またこの言葉は自分の実体験にも基づいていることでしょう。そして、かくいう私達もこの言葉は決して間違っていないと思わずにはいられない現実を日々、目の当たりにしています。
これらに対して今日の聖書の言葉は「主は御名のために私達を正しい道に導かれる」というのです。「導かれる」ということは、すなわち主が私達の前を歩いているということであり、私達がその主の後についていくのなら、自ずと私達は正しき道へと導かれるのだということです。そして、この２３篇は言います。我々の牧者なる主は「その御名のために」私達を正しい道へと導かれると。
この度、このメッセージを準備している時にこんなニュースをＣＮＮのニュース記事の中に見つけました。スペインで起きた出来事です。
スペイン北東部のウエスカで今月七日、羊飼いが居眠りをしている間に、１３００匹あまりの羊の群れが待機していた空き地から逃げ出し、集団で町の通りを占拠するという騒ぎがありました。警察には何百匹もの羊が町を歩き回っているという住民からの通報が相次ぎ、警察が現場に急行した時、羊飼いはまだ眠りこけていて、羊が逃げてしまったことを知らずおり、後にこの羊の群れは、警察と羊飼いによって無事、元の空き地に戻されました。
この時、羊は夏を前にピレネー山中の放牧地に向かって大移動の最中だったそうです。その移動ルートの中にこのウエスカの市街地があり、その時は混乱を避けるために警察が交通整理をすることになっていて、羊飼いは朝まで市街地の空き地で羊達と待機していたのです。しかし、その間に彼は眠りこけてしまい、その間に先頭に立つ人を失った羊達はどこに行くのかその当てもなく町中をさまよったのです。（２０１６年６月１０日 ＣＮＮ）https://www.cnn.co.jp/fringe/35084098.html
この記事はここまでのことしか書いていません。調べてみますとウエスカは人口五万人ほどの小さな町です。この小さな町で１３００頭の羊が町中をさまよったということはちょっとしたニュースであったに違いありません。想像するにこの小さな町で、この無名の羊飼いも少々、有名となったかもしれません。言うまでもなくそれは名誉なことではありませんが・・・。
時代は違えどダビデも羊飼いとしての責任を知っていたことでしょう。自分の羊が養われ、羊が支障なく導かれているのであるなら、私の名が地に落ちることはないと彼は知っていたに違いありません。羊達が日毎に養われ、成長し、彼らをあるべき道に導くということは、羊のためだけではなく、それは私の名誉なのだと彼は知っていたに違いありません。
同じように私達の牧者なる主はその御名のために私達を正しき道に導かれると言われるのです。言い方を変えれば、主によって養われ、その御前に憩うことを知り、正しい道に導かれることは私達のためだけではなく、そのことは私の御名にかかわることなのだと主は言われるのです。
主にある皆さん、私達はどんな道をこれまで歩んできたのでしょうか。今、どんな道を歩んでいますか。その道はどこに向かい、その終着点はどこだかご存知ですか。その道を選択する時、何をもって決断していますか。華やかに見える道を選びますか。楽そうな道を選びますか。鉛筆を転がしますか（古いですね）。私達の牧者なる主に先頭を歩んでいただきませんか。主はその御名のゆえに私達を導いてくださるお方です。
主にある皆さん、今日、お話ししましたように私達が思う以上にこの主なる牧者に己が牧者となっていただくということは私達にとりまして大切なことのようです。主は私達の魂をいきかえらせ、私達をその御名のゆえに正しき道に導かれるというのですから。
思えば思うほど、このことは何を差し置いてもまず私達が知るべきこと、獲得すべきことだと思うのは私だけでしょうか。あなたもこの主と共に歩みませんか。牧者なる主は既にあなたの先頭を歩くべく、私達のすぐ側におられるのですから。このお方は私達の牧者となることを切に願っておられるのですから。お祈りしましょう。
Refresh and Redirection

We are currently looking at Psalms 23 written by Daniel, who from a nameless shepherd became the second king of Israel. There is no poem as famous as the one written here. David was born as the eighth son of Jesse, conceived in his mother’s sin. He was likely never cared for much by his parents or siblings, and grew up tending for the sheep out in the field. He recalled how he had spent his days with the sheep with no interaction with other people, and wrote this everlasting lasting song, seeing “humans” as the “sheep”, and “God” as the “shepherd”.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures,he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalms 23:1-6)
Today we will be looking at the the passage, “he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” First, let us take a look at the portion, “he refreshes my soul” from the first half.
He refreshes my soul
Looking at this passage in English, “He refreshes my soul”, the word “refresh” is used. The word “refreshed” means to “give new strength or energy to”. Our soul withers, and thirsts, but our shepherd gives us new strength and satisfies our thirst.
We humans need to be “refreshed” in both body and soul. When we feel weary in exhaustion, and when we feel drained, it is necessary to be refreshed. How do you refresh yourselves? As we have spoken of before, the subject of this passage this passage is “the Lord”. Yes, this passage does not state that “I myself refreshes my soul”, but that “the Lord refreshes my soul”. And for this, God does for us many things.
Lately, when I wake up in the morning, I go to the balcony and sit alone for a while. I neither take a book nor my cellphone. I just sit. The night dawns and moment by moment the sky grows brighter. The birds start to wake. The time when the birds wake and start to sing remind me of the time when I was on a school trip, and we had all slept crowded together in a large room. As it became morning, slowly you could hear the voices of those who have woken, one by one. In the same way, the birds start to sing. It is as if they are greeting each other saying, “did you sleep well?” or “it looks like today maybe a hot day”. At these times, God reminds me of those words. And as it says, that is the moment when God refreshes me.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:25-27)
In the yard of my house there is a bird feeder. And the food inside it disappears very quickly. It is because the birds come and eat as if to compete. As I watch this, I think that it must be very difficult to care for even a small number of birds. And to think that all the birds of this land are cared for every single day, that they have a place to dwell, I am reminded of the greatness of the almighty who is with me.
The prophet Jeremiah has written, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”(Lamentations 3:22-23)
Jeremiah was a prophet of tears, persecuted by his brethren and family. Yet still he spoke the words he received from God to the people. But of course the words spoken were not well received by those who heard them. At the end of his day, Jeremiah must have recalled all of the threats and dangers he had faced.
But even in such situations, Jeremiah saw hope in each new morning. It is easy to think of what a day may bring, in Jeremiah’s case, a day full of revolt and persecution. But instead, he saw God’s love, compassion, and greatness each morning. The tasks given to him were not easy, yet comfort and strength was given to him each morning, refreshing him, and continued each day to accomplish his mission from God.
We know that plants change carbon dioxide to oxygen. Like opening the windows in a room with stale air, the air of the stale world we live in is made clean each day even if we do not stop to notice. This has happened every single day (without fail from the beginning of history) so that we can start each new day refreshed.
In my car is Noboru Morishige’s CD, who has been to our church before. In that CD is a song called “Hinode” (meaning sunrise), and every morning I come to church listening to this song. This has become my entrance procession song to church. In this song is the lyrics,
“no matter what happens in the dark night, the sunrise will never abandon me”
“the sunrise will not abandon me”. I do not know of a single day in which the morning abandoned us, and did not come. Just as this morning, morning has come and tomorrow too, the morning will come. In this is God’s love, compassion, and truth.
Lately before I lay down at the end of the day, I sit at the balcony alone for a while. I neither take a book nor my cellphone. I just sit. The birds I heard in the morning have gone silent, and the moon and stars quietly shine on us. The birds rest their wings as they sleep. God has given each of them a place to shelter from the night dew, free of charge.
In such nights, when I put myself in the darkness alone, God speaks to me in the silence. As I look up at the moon and stars, the feelings of the writer of that psalms wells up inside. Yes, that is the moment I am refreshed by the words of the Lord.
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet:” (Psalms 8:3-6)
When I look up at the night sky, I think of just how small I am. “The light from the stars you see have traveled for many many years until it reaches us” is something you hear often. Compared to them, what does my 80 years of life amount to? With such thoughts in mind, I confess the same thing the writer of psalms has confessed: Lord, “what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” What am I, such a tiny existence, that God cares for me?
At the end of the day, I put myself before God, and loopback on the day, reminded of the blessings I have received from Him. And just like that, I am filled with overflowing thanks. At this age I have come to understand that we are not naturally inclined to remember the grace given to us every day. We naturally tend to do the exact opposite: to notice the negative and dissatisfaction. So without deliberately thinking about the grace we receive from God, we will fail to notice, and negativity and dissatisfaction will fill our hearts. That is why we keep in mind to count our blessings. With this, our hearts will be filled with thanks.
And yes, those are the times when the Lord’s words refresh us. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:33-34)
A day’s happenings and circumstances, and tomorrow’s worries are brought before God and reset, sot that we can focus on tomorrow as a new day. For there is nothing we can do as we sleep during the night. But God works even when we are sleeping. If so, we can leave our worries in His hands. These moments every morning and night, my body and soul is refreshed by the Lord. They are reset.
Recently, I have been taught that to be refreshed does not always mean eating something delicious or to go to a new place. God has given me the finest refreshment, one not by action or work but from coming before God. How are you refreshed by God? We will move on to our next point.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake
Our lives are a series of “sentaku” or decisions. There are two kinds. The first: to wash ones clothes type decisions (a word play with decision and wash both being “sentaku”). At my house, every day, a mound accumulates overnight. Yes, a mound of laundry. As long as we live we will have this “sentaku” washing of clothes.
And the other “sentaku” is of choice or decision. Whether to wake up at 6 or 8, to what to eat for dinner, the decisions are never ending. We go our to eat with a friend and look at the menu to decide what to eat.
The waiter brings the food that we decided on. Sometimes I then think, “oh, I wish I had ordered that instead.” The moment we make the wrong choice. But if it is such a small thing, it is fine. We can enjoy what we have now, and order what we wanted another time.
But what about the paths we walk in life? To chose a path is to decide which direction to go. Running North to South is the 5 freeway and running East to West is the 8. The directions they go are clearly different. To decide on the direction dictates our destination. The 5 freeway takes us to Oregon, while the 8 freeway takes us to Arizona.
No one hoping to go to Oregon will take the 8 freeway. Nor will anyone going to Arizona take the 5 freeway. But how about the path we take? Do we know which direction it will take us? Or where it leads to?
To chose a path is to decide which direction to go, and our destination we will eventually arrive at. There are countless paths before us. Today we may make a decision which may alter the direction of our life. It may be a small shift or a completely different direction. This change in direction, will change our destination.
When we view this in such way, these decisions are actually the most important issues in our life. Yet, we are too busy everyday with other things occupying our minds. Our thoughts never extend to the “decision of paths”, and only notice later just how great of an importance they had been.
A while back, I headed down East on freeway 8 to go camping with my son. 30 minutes into the drive, the landscape changes to a rocky barren sight. Going a little further, you will see a road heading north to Anzo Borrego. But at that time, I did not see it and missed this exit. It is not a big deal if I were driving in the city. But here, it took over 10 minutes to get to the next exit to tun myself around, resulting in a 20 minute time loss. I mourned this loss, but 20 minutes can be easily recovered.
But what if this was life? To set up a large business plan, or to imagine the ideal family future is fine. But why do we overlook the decisions of which paths we must take to fulfill them, and blindly continue in our paths? The many problems we encounter are a result of the paths we have taken, and the path we are on now. You do not meet drivers in El Centro who say, “I was trying to get to Los Angeles, but I have gone the wrong direction”. But there are countless numbers of people who say “This wasn’t how it was supposed to be” about their life.
When looking at Psalms 23, we talked about the words of Isaiah, “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)
“each of us has turned to our own way”, refers to us going down the path we decide. For the most part, that is what we do. But the problem here, is that we cannot see what lies ahead. Proverbs 14:12, 16:25 writes, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” What Solomon writes here is disturbing; that even though it may seem like the right path to us, the result will be death. This is no exaggeration or threat. Solomon had seen this with his own eyes in the lives of others and also from his own experience. We also see the really around us which confirms these words.
Towards these things, the bible says, “He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” To “guide” means that God walks the path ahead of us, and that if we follow, he will lead us down the rightful path. It says here in chapter 23, that the Lord who is our shepherd, guides us for “his name’s sake.”
When I was preparing this message, I came across this news article on CNN. It was something that occurred in Spain.
Earlier this month on the 7th in Huesca, Spain, a 1,300 herd of sheep suck past its shepherd in the middle of the night, and made their way through the city streets. Police received calls from locals that hundreds of sheep were running free on the city streets. When police arrived in the scene, the shepherd was found still asleep. The sheep were later rounded up safely by the shepherd and police.
The herd was scheduled for an orderly move to the Pyrenees mountains later that morning with traffic halted, and were put an open field to rest until then. But as the shepherd fell sleep, the sheep wandered away into the streets. (June 9, 2016 CNN)https://edition.cnn.com/2016/06/09/europe/sheep-walk-trnd/index.html
The article gives no other information. When I looked up the city Huesca, it was a small city with the population of roughly 5000. It must have been quite the news for 1300 sheep to be wandering the streets. The unnamed shepherd may have gotten to be quite famous, although it is not something to be proud of.
Though time has changed, David would have also known the responsibilities of a shepherd. If the sheep were properly cared for and safe, he must have known that no one will even hear of his name. For the sheep to be cared for, properly raised, and guided on the right path was not only for the sheep but also for this own name’s sake.
In the same way, the Lord our shepherd guides us for his name’s sake. In other words, to be provided for by Him, to rest in his presence, and to be guided to the right path is not only for our sake but his responsibility under His name.
Dear brothers and sisters, what paths have we walked down? What path do you currently walk? Which direction does it go, and where will it lead you? When you chose that path, with what thoughts did you decide? Did you chose the path that looks pleasant? Or a path that looks fun? Did you roll a pencil to decide?(this is a little old school) Why not let the Lord our shepherd lead us? He will guide us for his name’s sake.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, as we have spoken of today, to have our Lord be our shepherd is of greater importance than we may think. He refreshes our soul, and guides us for his name’s sake.
Am I the only one who believes that the more I think on it, the more I see that this is of utmost importance to acquire. Will you join us in our walk with the Lord? The Lord our shepherd walks ahead of us and with us. He wishes to be our shepherd, always. Lets pray.
