ご存知のように私の父は韓国人でした。母は日本人です。私には異母兄弟が四人います。皆、私の父のような年齢の者達です。数年前、韓国を訪問しました時にこの二人の兄弟に再会しました。私は韓国で生まれ、二年ほどソウルにおりましたので、その時、この兄は歳の離れた私を息子のようにかわいがってくれました。後に帰国し五年ほど発ってソウルを再訪しました時に、当時の金浦空港に降り立ち、兄達に再会した時に彼らは涙を流しながら、小さな私の体を窒息するほどに強く抱きしめてくれたのを覚えています。
そんな兄達も既にリタイアし、私達の人生で会うことができたのは以後、数回だけでそれぞれ別の人生を歩んできました。そう、その別の人生とは言葉も文化も違う人生です。しかし、数年前に訪韓しました時、兄と写真をとりましたらあまりにも似ている互いの姿に驚きました（私がこれからどのようなプロセスを経て様変わりしていくかということはこの兄を見れば一目瞭然であるということは言うまでもありません）。
そして、このことは私の外観に限らずに自分自身に対して「あれ、これは日本的な心情ではないな」と思うことが最近、度々あるのです。「これはどちらかというと韓国的な心情だな」と思うのです。私の記憶に残るものは日本のことが占めているのですが、私の心の中に韓国的な心情があるのです。そうです、これが「血」というものなのだということをあらためて感じているのです。

鎖を断ち切る
２０１６年１１月６日
私達は創世記から邪悪に満ちた世界でノアとその家族が洪水を免れたということを見てまいりました。そして地に満ちていた水が引き、新しい土地に住み始めたノアはぶどう畑を作り、そのぶどう酒にしたたか酔い、醜態を息子達の前にあらわしたということをこれまでにお話ししました。そう、それはこのような出来事でした。
20さてノアは農夫となり、ぶどう畑をつくり始めたが、21彼はぶどう酒を飲んで酔い、天幕の中で裸になっていた。22カナンの父ハムは父の裸を見て、外にいるふたりの兄弟に告げた。23セムとヤペテとは着物を取って、肩にかけ、うしろ向きに歩み寄って、父の裸をおおい、顔をそむけて父の裸を見なかった。（創世記９章２０節―２３節）。
私達が旅行に出かけ、帰宅しまして旅行中に使っていたバッグを逆さにしますと、小さなごみや塵が落ちます。今や国のリーダーを決める選挙の勝敗は候補者の政策の戦いだけではなく、相手にダメージを与えるスキャンダルをどれだけ見つけることができるかというような戦い、そうカバンから落ちるものを互いに丹念に見つけ出すような様となってきました。
暴虐で満ちていた世の中で神と共に生きたノアですが、彼も失敗を犯しました。ノアは確かに善良な人でした。しかし、彼とて人間、聖書は隠すことなく人の失敗を書き残しています。そしてしばしば一つの失敗はまた別の失敗を生んでいき、その影響は大きく広がっていきます。
このノアの失態について彼の末の子ハムは父の姿を兄弟に告げたというのです。ハムは自分を見守り育んでくれた父を擁護することなく、父の失態を笑い、馬鹿にするかのようにそのことを告げたのでしょう。
24やがてノアは酔いがさめて、末の子が彼にした事を知ったとき、25彼は言った、「カナンはのろわれよ。彼はしもべのしもべとなって、その兄弟たちに仕える」。26また言った、「セムの神、主はほむべきかな、カナンはそのしもべとなれ。27神はヤペテを大いならしめ、セムの天幕に彼を住まわせられるように。カナンはそのしもべとなれ」。（創世記９章２４節―２７節）。
ここにはノアが酔いからさめて「末の子が彼にした事」と書かれています。この言葉から分かることは、ハムはノアのことを兄弟におもしろおかしく、父を侮辱するかのようにして言いふらしたのみならず、実際に酩酊している父に何かをしたのかもしれないということです。聖書注解者はそこに父の裸を前に息子の性的な罪があったのではないかということを指摘しています。
これらのことにより父ノアは言います。「カナンはのろわれよ。彼は僕の僕となって、その兄弟たちに仕える」。ここでノアはハムの息子カナンの名前をあげています。先に読みましたところにも「カナンの父ハムは父の裸を見て・・・」とあります。このことについて、ハムと共にその息子カナンも一連のことに関わっていたのではないかという注解書がありますが、そうであったのかもしれません。ただ確かなことはこの一連のことにより、その影響がハムのみならず、息子カナン、さらにはその先の彼らの子孫にまでおよぶことになったということなのです。
創世記１０章はこのハムから始まる彼の一族についてこのような記録を書き残しています。
6ハムの子孫はクシ、ミツライム、プテ、カナンであった。7クシの子孫はセバ、ハビラ、サブタ、ラアマ、サブテカであり、ラアマの子孫はシバとデダンであった。8クシの子はニムロデであって、このニムロデは世の権力者となった最初の人である。9彼は主の前に力ある狩猟者であった。これから「主の前に力ある狩猟者ニムロデのごとし」ということわざが起った。10彼の国は最初シナルの地にあるバベル、エレク、アカデ、カルネであった。11彼はその地からアッスリヤに出て、ニネベ、レホボテイリ、カラ、12およびニネベとカラとの間にある大いなる町レセンを建てた。13ミツライムからルデ族、アナミ族、レハビ族、ナフト族、14パテロス族、カスル族、カフトリ族が出た。カフトリ族からペリシテ族が出た。15カナンからその長子シドンが出て、またヘテが出た。16その他エブスびと、アモリびと、ギルガシびと、17ヒビびと、アルキびと、セニびと、18アルワデびと、ゼマリびと、ハマテびとが出た。後になってカナンびとの氏族がひろがった。19カナンびとの境はシドンからゲラルを経てガザに至り、ソドム、ゴモラ、アデマ、ゼボイムを経て、レシャに及んだ。20これらはハムの子孫であって、その氏族とその言語とにしたがって、その土地と、その国々にいた（創世記１０章６節ー２０節）。
ハムの長男でありましたクシの息子のニムロデは最初の世の権力者となり、彼の国はシナルの地にあるバベル、エレク、アカデ、カルネにいたったと聖書は書き記しています。
ニムロデの国の中にはこれまでにも触れてきましたあの「バベル」がありました。ということは彼はあのバベルの塔の建造を始めるにあたり、その陣頭指揮をとっていたのかもしれません。さらに彼の領土は広がり、その統治者として君臨します。
さらにハムの息子ミツライムからは後に常にイスラエルの宿敵となりました「ぺリシテ人」が出たとここには記されており、さらにはハムの末の子からカナン人の氏族が広がったと創世記は記しています。
後に長き時を経て、イスラエルの民はエジプトにおいて４００年の間、奴隷となりますが、モーセを先頭にエジプトを脱して約束の地、カナンに彼らは向かい、そこに定着します。そうです、カナンとはハムの息子の子孫が住む土地です。
そのカナンに入るにあたり神様は先頭を立つモーセにこう語ります。『主はモーセに、こう仰せになった。イスラエルの人々に告げてこう言いなさい。私はあなたたちの神、主である。あなたたちがかつて住んでいたエジプトの国の風習や私が、これからあなたたちを連れて行くカナンの風習に従ってはならない。その掟に従って歩んではならない』（レビ記 １８章１節－３節）
確かにカナンの土地は豊かで農耕が栄えているところでした。それまでその日暮らしをし、移住し続けてきたイスラエルの民にとりまして、農耕生活は彼らのライフスタイルに安定を与えました。同じ土地に定住することができるようになり、蓄えをすることもできるようになり、将来を見据えた生活設計ができるようになりました。
しかし、農産物の収穫には厳しさがともないます。それは天候次第であり、ゆえにそこには豊作を願い、その土地の神に祈る祭りがありました。カナン人が祈り祭っていた神は豊作の神、バアルでした。以後、聖書の中で度々、出てくる偶像神であり、預言者エリアもこのバアルの神に仕える者達と戦いました。彼らは豊作を願い、一年の苦労を互いにねぎらう祭りをもち、そこでは当然、地の産物から造られた酒があり、さらには豊作の神イコール、多産の神でありますゆえに、そこには乱痴気騒ぎがあり、これがやがてカナンの近親相姦、そして神殿娼婦、神殿男娼へと発展します。
カナンでは見事なブドウが実ったようです（あのヨシュアとカレブがかつてカナンに偵察に行った時に彼らは大きなブドウを持ち帰ったでしょう）このように大地に根をはやし、実るぶどうは神の恵です。そして、そのブドウからはブドウ酒が作られ、それを楽しむのもいいでしょう。それらは神様が人に与えた祝福なのですから。しかし、その酒の力も加わり、彼らは性的に堕落していきました。性も当初は創世記に「産めよ増えよ」とありますように神が人に与えた祝福でありました。しかし、この神の定めた関係を遺脱しますと、それは人の間に深刻な陰を落とし、いたるところで人の関係が破れていきます。この世界にいくつも生まれて消えていった大国や文明が滅びる前に必ずあったことは民の性的な堕落であったとは世の歴史家が指摘するとおりです。
そして、これらのことを聞きます時に思い起こしませんか、そうです、あの酒に泥酔し、醜態をさらし、それに対して罪を犯したノアとハムのあの出来事を・・・。・・・彼らの子孫は全く同じことを繰り返しているのです
さらにはこのカナンから始まる一族が居住した地域について聖書はこう書き残しています。『19カナンびとの境はシドンからゲラルを経てガザに至り、ソドム、ゴモラ、アデマ、ゼボイムを経て、レシャに及んだ。20これらはハムの子孫であって、その氏族とその言語とにしたがって、その土地と、その国々にいた』（創世記１０章１９節ー２０節）お気づきになりましたでしょう、彼らこそ、後に硫黄の火によって滅ぼされてしまったソドムとゴモラの住人だったのです。
ソドムとゴモラについては皆さんもご存知でしょう。後にアブラハムに神の御声がかけられ、彼は自ら住み慣れた土地を離れ、神の示す地に旅立ちます。その時に彼の甥、ロトも彼と行動を共にするのですが、神様が彼らを祝福したために、彼らの財産である家畜が増え、共に住むことが出来なくなりました。そこでアブラハムとロトはそれぞれ分かれて暮らすようになるのですが、その時にロトは見た目によく潤っている町、ソドムとゴモラへと向かい、そこに住み始めました。しかし、そこに住む住人、すなわちハム、カナンの子孫はとんでもない者達でした。
その町では、旅人である男性を町の男性達が犯すのが当然の権利であったようです。そのことを防ごうとロトは自分の娘を彼らに差し出します。また、このような中、かろうじて救い出されたロトの娘達は、今度は父親に酒を飲ませて眠らせ、父親との間に二人の子どもを産むと言う近親相姦の話まで出てきます。そういう信じがたい性的な, 乱れ、腐敗と言うものが、イスラエルが定着したカナン人の地にはあったのです。
これらのことを聞きます時に再度、思い起こしませんか、そうです、あの酒に泥酔し、醜態をさらし、それに対して罪を犯したノアとハムのあの出来事を。彼らの子孫は全く同じことを繰り返しているのです。これらがノアの子、ハムとその子孫の姿でありました。しかし、他の二人の兄弟セムとヤペテいついてはノアはこう言いました。
25彼は言った、「カナンはのろわれよ。彼はしもべのしもべとなって、その兄弟たちに仕える」。26また言った、「セムの神、主はほむべきかな、カナンはそのしもべとなれ。27神はヤペテを大いならしめ、セムの天幕に彼を住まわせられるように。カナンはそのしもべとなれ」（創世記９章２６節、２７節）
ノアの子、セムとヤペテは祝福を受け、ハムはその兄弟の僕となるというのです。
イスラエル民族の始祖はアブラハムですが、創世記１１章によりますとセムはこのアブラハムの祖先となり、これまでお話ししてきましたハムの子孫がセムの僕となるということがソロモンの時代に成就します。
20すべてイスラエルの子孫でないアモリびと、ヘテびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとの残った者、21その地にあって彼らのあとに残った子孫すなわちイスラエルの人々の滅ぼしつくすことのできなかった者を、ソロモンは強制的に奴隷として徴募をおこない、今日に至っている。22しかしイスラエルの人々をソロモンはひとりも奴隷としなかった。彼らは軍人、また彼の役人、司令官、指揮官、戦車隊長、騎兵隊長であったからである（Ⅰ列王記９章２０節ー２２節）
ここで記されているすべてイスラエルの子孫でないアモリびと、ヘテびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとの残った者こそが、ハムの子孫なのです。
ノアとハムの出来事があって後の、これらの一連の歴史を見てきます時に私達はノアが言ったとおりのことが起きたことを知ります。そして、そこからなぜ、このようにノアの子達の子孫に異なる影響が出てきたのかということについて二つのことが考えられます。そう、まず神様は全てこれらのことを見ておられて、神の御手がはたらかれたということ。ノアが言いましたように、セムとヤペテとその子孫には確かに神の祝福があったということです。
そして、同時にこのようなことが考えられるでしょう。神は人に自由なる意思というものを与えております。ゆえに私達は自分達が思うように、願うように生きることが出来ます。しかし、その自由は曲者で私達は素晴らしい人間になるためにその自由を行使できますし、獣のような人間になるためにその自由を行使することもできるのです。そして同時にこの世界はその人間世界に対して主権をもっておられる神の御心がなされていく場でもあります。そのところに神の祝福が注がれる、否、祝福が失われるというようなことも起きてくるのです。この人の自由意志と神の主権とが共にはたらきつつ私達人間の歴史は前に進んでいるのです。
ハムは父の醜態を公にして馬鹿にするかのようにして、また実際にその父の裸に対して罪を犯すというようなことをしました。しかし、他の兄弟、セムとヤペテはそんなノアの裸を見ることなく、その裸を隠したのです。今までお話ししてきましたように、このハムの子孫、またセムとヤペテには確かに神の祝福が注がれる、注がれないということが起きたのでしょう。
そして、同時に私達が襟を正して向き合わなければならないことは、ハムの心がそのまま次の世代に引き継がれていったということもありますでしょう。彼が父に対してなした言動、すなわちハムが日々、口にしていたこと、そのふるまい、その価値観、それが子から孫へ、その子達へと引き継がれていったということです。
彼の子孫であるニムロデが神を畏れず天に届く塔を建てたということ、ハムの子孫がソドムやゴモラでなしたこと、後にカナンに住む人達がどのようになったかということ、これらのことはあの時、父の裸を見た時にハムの心に芽生えていったものが後の子孫に受け継がれていったということを否定することはできません。
ハムが父の裸体を見て、とっさになした言動、またセムとヤペテ達もとっさになしたことというのは、まさしく彼らのそれまでの生き様と彼らの人格をあらわしていたことでしょう。この結果、その子孫までが諸々の問題を抱えるようになったという記録を前に私達は心が探られるのです。先にも申し上げましたように誰しも、その心を逆さにしてたたけば、中にある細かな埃が出てくるからです。
皆さんは自分の家の家系図というものを見たことがありますでしょうか。中にはもう何百年も前の先祖までさかのぼることが出来る家系図がありますという方がいるかもしれません。私の場合、私の家は名だたる家系でもありませんので私が名前まで知っているのは祖父までで、その先にどんな人が何をして、どこで暮らしていたのかというようなことは分かりません。しかし、このことを思うととても不思議な思いになります。例えば私の先祖という人が今から１０００年前にも、２０００年前にもいたということは確実なのですから。どんな人であったのか、もしかしたら７００年前の先祖が私の容姿にそっくりだったなんてこともあるのかもしれません。

創世記は『箱舟から出たノアの息子は、セム、ハム、ヤフェトであった。ハムはカナンの父である。この三人がノアの息子で、全世界の人々は彼らから出て広がったのである』（創世記９章１８節－１９節）と書いています。
そうです、私達もこの息子達の血を引き継ぐものであると聖書は言っており、ということは私達は彼らの善きものも、悪しき者を引き継いでいるということです。私達が引き継いでいる良きものは大切にしましょう。しかし、同時に私達は彼の罪も引き継いでいます。そう、それはハムの子孫が明らかにしたように、罪の連鎖ということであり、その連鎖は私達が望んでいるものではありません。
このようなことを思います時に、私達はこの罪の連鎖を解きたいと思います。どうしたらそのようなことが可能なのでしょうか。そうです、それは自分では断ち切ることはできないのです。このことを可能にすることが主イエス・キリストの十字架なのです。
聖書はこう記しています。『自由を得させるために、キリストはわたしたちを解放して下さったのである。だから、堅く立って、二度と奴隷のくびきにつながれてはならない』 （ガラテヤ５章１節）。
このことは私達が完全な者となり、罪を全く犯すことがなくなるということはありません。しかし、私達が主イエスの無条件の愛を受け入れるのなら、少なくとも、どうか覚えてください、その血の中にキリストの恵みが注がれるのです。そして、欠けの多き私達であってもこのキリストの恵みによって生きるということを生涯かけて知り、少しづつ少しづつ、私達の考え方、価値観が変えられていくのです。
明らかにそれはそれまで先祖から代々、受け継いてきた負の流れに代わるものとなり、それは後の者達へと引き継がれていくのです。そして、それは何も血族だけのことではなくて、私達の周りにおる者達へも明け渡されていくものなのです。お祈りしましょう。
Cut Off The Chain.

We have been focused on Noah and his family. They had lived in the evil world, but they were saved from flood, and after all the water was gone, they lived on the land and Noah made a vineyard. One day he was drunk badly with wine and showed his naked body. Yes the story is like this;
20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked (Genesis 9:20-23)
When we go to travel and come back to our house, we empty our luggage. We put the bag upside down and tiny trash and dust falls from the bag. At the election of the national leader, the candidates try to find scandals, which are like searching for dust. They do not fight with their policies but their scandals.
We have seen the failure of Noah. He was very honest to God but he also failed. He was a great man but he was also human, and the Bible does not hide that and wrote in it. This failure caused another problem with influence that expanded enormously.
Noah’s son Ham appealed Noah’s shame to his brothers, and this caused the problem. Ham did not protect his father but laughed at him and made him a fool.
24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he is to his brothers.”26 He also said, “Praise is to the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem.27 May God extends Japheth’s territory; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth?”
When Noah awoke, he found out what his youngest son had done to him. We could assume that Ham did not only appeal but also he had done something to his father. The Bible scholars indicated that Ham sinned to his naked father.
Because of this, Noah said “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he is to his brothers.” Noah mentioned Ham’s son, Canaan here. The Bible also wrote “Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked”. Some commentary said Canaan might be related with this incident with Ham, and maybe it is true, and because of this, the incident influenced not only Ham and Canaan but it affects all their offspring. Genesis 10 mentioned about the offspring of Ham like this. Because these verses are long, please read the verses on the screen along with Japanese.
6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan.7 The sons of Cush:Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka.The sons of Raamah:Sheba and Dedan.8 Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, and a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar.11 From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.13 Egypt was the father of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, aphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites.15 Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, 16 Jebusites, Amorites,Girgashites, 17 Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. Later the Canaanite clans scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha.20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.
According to the Genesis, Cush was the oldest son of Ham, and Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth, and he first centers of his kingdom were Babylon (which is Babel), Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar.
One of Nimrod’s town was Babel, which means Nimrod himself might have began the construction of Babel. His territory expanded, and he attained more power.
Moreover in Genesis it says, old enemy of Israel, Philistines came from the son of Ham, Mitlime ( Egypt in the English Bible), and the Canaanite clans were scattered from Ham’s youngest son, Canaan.
After many years, Israel became slaves of Egypt for four hundred years, and Moses escaped from Egypt and headed to God’s promised land, Canaan, which is where Ham’s descendants had lived.
As Moses and the Israelites enter Canaan, The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the Lord your God. 3 You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices (Leviticus 18)
The land of Canaan had very rich soil and it was a prosperous land. Until the people of Israel arrived there, they were always moving, so the life in Canaan gave them stable life style. They could save their crops and even make their plans for the future.
But the crops face severe reality. The problems were caused by climate and therefore they wished and prayed to their gods. They worship and pray for their god of harvest, Baal. The name Baal appeared many times in the Bible. The prophet, Elijah fought with Baal. The Canaanite had the festival for harvest and they got drunk. Because Baal is the god of fertility, they had sexual spree, and that became incest, and there were many shrines and male prostitutes in the land.
Canaan was famous for big grapes (We know Joshua and Caleb took back big grapes when they went to spy in the land of Canaan). The grape from vineyard is the blessing of God, and we can enjoy the wine from it. These are God’s blessings to us, but the blessing also enhanced the sexual corruption. These are also blessings of God like He said, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it”, but when we break the rule, that destroys our relationship and our life. Historians prove that these sexual corruptions occurred before many civilizations and kingdoms perished.
As we heard about this, do we remember the incident, yes the drunken Noah and his son, Ham’s sin toward his father. Their offspring was doing the exact same things.
The Bible also mentions the region of the people from Canaan. 19 and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha.20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations. Yes, they are the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, and these cities were destroyed by God.
You know about Sodom and Gomorrah. When God spoke to Abraham, he left his hometown and went toward the place God led him to. Abraham was with his nephew Roth and God blessed and increased both of their livestock so much, so that they could not live together in the same place. Therefore Abraham and Roth started living in different places. Roth chose to live in Sodom and Gomorrah because the land seems to have very rich soil with water, but the people of that land was outrageous, and the Bible said they were the people of Ham and Canaan.
The town had a tradition when a traveler stays the night at that place, man rapes the man traveler. The Bible said Roth offered his daughter at that time to avoid that rape, and also the Bible recorded that Roth’s two daughters made his father drunk, and had their fathers’ children. This kind of unbelievable sexual incest and corruption had taken place in the Canaanite land.
Do we remember the incident again? Yes drunken naked Noah and his son, Ham’s deed to his father. Their descendants were doing exactly same kind of things, but Noah mentioned about his son, Shem and Japheth like this.
26 He also said, “Praise is to the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem.27 May God extends Japheth’s territory; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.” (Genesis 9:26-27)
Noah’s sons, Shem and Japheth were blessed and the descendants of Ham will be their slave.
The father of Israel was Abraham, but according to Genesis 11, Shem becomes the ancestor of Abraham, and the prophecy was fulfilled at the time in the book of Kings in the Bible. Please read English verse on the screen while I am reading in Japanese.
20 There were still people left from the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites (these peoples were not Israelites). 21 Solomon conscripted the descendants of all these peoples remaining in the land—whom the Israelites could not exterminate[i]—to serve as slave labor, as it is to this day. 22 But Solomon did not make slaves of any of the Israelites; they were his fighting men, his government officials, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and charioteers(1 Kings 9:20-22).
All these people who were not Israelites were all descendents of Ham.
After the incident happened between Noah and Ham, the history proved what Noah’s prediction was fullfilled, and we can think two reasons why that incident influenced Ham’s descendants. First of all, God watched the incident and his works were revealed. As Noah said God blessed Shem and Japheth, but Ham could not receive God’s blessing.
You may also think this way. God gives us freedom of our will. Therefore we can live whatever we think and wish, We can use that free will to be a good man and also to be like a beast. Our world is in God’s sovereign authority, so his blessing will be poured out and not poured out. Our human history is created with these two factors, our free will and God’s sovereign authority.
Ham made a fool of his father’s failure and sinned but his brothers did not see his father’s acts and tried to hide. Therefore God’s blessings to them were poured out to them.
And we have to straighten ourselves with the fact that the heart of Ham was taken over to the next generation. What Ham said and did to his father must have been reflected in his daily attitudes and words, which affected the values of his children. These things were taken over one generation to other generation.
His descendants, Nimrod tried to reach heaven by building the tower of Babel, his descendants sinful deeds at Sodom and Gomorrah, and also the Canaanite’s and their corrupted town, these are all from Ham and these must have begun with the moment that Ham sinned to his father, Noah.
What Ham did to his father is not an accident, but that is his character, and as a result, his descendants also pursued the same path. We are now to exam ourselves because if we shake our luggage upside down, the dust will also fall from our bag.
Have you ever seen your family tree? Some of you can trace a couple of hundred years in your family tree. I believe I am not from that kind of notable family, so I only know my grandparent’s name, but I do not know anything beyond my grandparent. But when I think about our ancestor I feel full of wonder because someone who was my ancestor had lived on this earth a thousand years or even two thousand years ago. My ancestor who lived 700 years ago might also look exactly like me.
As many of you know, my father is Korean, and my mother is Japanese. I have four step brothers and sister. They are all like my father’s age now. When I was born in Seoul, they really loved me like their son. After two years I went back to Japan and I visited Seoul when I was five years old, I arrived at Kimpo airport, they found me and they hugged me so strong with tears.
I met them only a few times in my life and now they are retired. Yes, we had lived different life in different language and culture, but when I visited them about three years ago, I was surprised because we look so alike. This picture shows clearly, what process my appearance is taking. You may notice that by seeing my brothers, especially their foreheads, I am pretty sure that for the rest my life, I will be shinning.
And this is not only my appearance but also sometimes, I find in my mind “Oh, this is not Japanese way of thinking” but “This is more like Korean way of thinking”. This surprised me because 99% of my memory and experience was made in Japan. There is no influence from Korean culture, but interestingly I have a Korean heart. Yes, this comes from my “blood”.
Genesis says,18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth (Genesis 9:18-19).
Yes, the Bible said we all have inherited their blood, which means we have inherited their goodness and evil. Let us cherish the goodness but also remember the inheritance of sin. Yes the sins that chained Ham’s descendants into exactly how Noah and Ham had lived. We do not wish to be chained with these sins.
We would like to cut the sinful chain off. Yes, but we cannot do that by our strength. It is only possible by the cross of Jesus Christ.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery (Galatians 5:1).
This does not mean we will become the perfect man. It does not mean will we not commit sins anymore, but when we accept the unconditional love which was revealed on the cross of Jesus Christ, please remember, His grace will become abundant in our life. Even though we still have a lot of lacks and failures, when we know his grace upon us, it will change our thoughts and values, and change our life day by day.
The grace of Jesus will replace the chains of sin, and likewise, be passed down from generation to generation. The inheritance of grace will not be limited to blood relatives but those around us.
